G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread BGbank
Greetings folks, This may be a no-brainer Q... but I don't know...

I'm thinking of buying from a certain vendor a G4 ibook that comes without
an OS. My Q is, How can you install an OS if it doesn't already have one?

I have OS 9.1 CDs which came with this current G3 ibook (300mhz, 6gig, 128
ram). Will a G4 ibook (800mhz, 30gig, 640 ram) without any OS on it, let me
boot from and/or install this OS 9.1-CD, for starters? (Eventually I
would look to buy OSX CDs, etc.)

In other words, I'm sure the machine will turn on, but then what? Will a
G4 ibook w/o any OS on it even let you get to the Start Up Disk in the
Apple Menu/Control Panels so you can set it to start up on the OS 9.1 CD?

And then would it let me merely copy to HD the entire OS 9.1 from the CD?
If so, that'd be great. But if not, I wouldn't want to buy this G4 ibook if
I can't even make it work.

If it's more complicated than what I described above, does anyone know of a
webpage or URL that would list How To do such a thing, step-by-step?

Thanks for any tips!
Best regards,
Gail

Re: any requirement for OSX on first 8gb on a Pismo?

2005-12-09 Thread chris
Can anyone tell me if OSX 10.4 must be installed on the first 8 gb of
a hard drive on a Pismo?

I recently upgraded my Pismo's drive to a 60 GB drive and I cloned my
10.3 install to that drive. I did not partition the drive in any way and
all works just fine, so I'd have to guess that no, there is no 8 GB limit
on the Pismo (not like the way the 1st gen iMac needs OS X in a partition
that does not exceed the first 8 GB).

Re: Pismo DVD/CD-RW drive

2005-12-09 Thread chris
DVD movies are fine on this one. Retail and DVD-R.

Thanks!

Now I'll pick up a drive off ebay from a Dell or similar and get it
installed in my Pismo.

Thanks to everyone else as well for their advice on this topic.

Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that OS 9.1 CD.
Any Macintosh will be able to boot from an appropriate system install CD.
The CD has a version of the OS so that the Mac can boot from it. The only
gotcha is to make sure that the system install CD you have is appropriate
for the specific model of Mac you're planning to use it with.

metasyntactic variable: n. A name used in examples and understood to stand
for whatever thing is under discussion, or any random member of a class of

confusion, hackers never (well, hardly ever) use `foo' or other words like
it as permanent names for anything. In filenames, a common convention is
that any filename beginning with a metasyntactic-variable name is a scratch
file that may be deleted at any time.

G4 iBooks will require Panther or better. It will not boot into any
version of 9. Just buy the retail CD's for Panther or DVD for Tiger,
boot with the C key held down. Nothing more to it than that.

 -Laurent.

First, the price of the iBook should be discounted because there is no
original CD or OS loaded on the iBook. It should be sold with the
original OS and include the CD's but that does not happen all the time
so you will be responsible to get a licensed OS for it.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if there is
a problem.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not
boot and install on any other specific Mac. So your OS 9 CD from your
iBook may or may not work. Since it is an iBook CD your chances are
better that it will work. You will find out when you boot from the CD
and do the install process whether or not it will work for that
particular iBook. If you have access to the iBook try booting from
your CD by starting it or restarting it with the CD in the iBook while
holding down the C key.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C key
and following the installer instructions. It's easy to do. I would
suggest buying a retail version of OS 10.3 from the swaplist or eBay
as soon as possible. Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough
RAM and it would be a much better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever
was. If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on
it.

OS 9 on a G4 is like driving a Cadillac with a Chevette motor in it.

Airport Client Monitor problem

2005-12-09 Thread Harry Corsover
All of a sudden, Airport Client Monitor on my 15 AlBook 1.25MHz no
longer works properly. Upon loading, it shows a steeply declining
line that goes to zero and stays there, despite my having a steady
signal (as displayed in the Airport menu, and as evidenced by being
able to go online without a problem).

Can this be re-set? I haven't been able to locate a Preferences file
for it so far.

Thanks.

While it's true the Pismo doesn't have the limit, that it worked in
this case isn't a valid test. You can do the same thing to those
machines with the limit and it may work. It depends on certain files
being located in the first 8Gb. The limit isn't on how big a drive
you can have but is based on the boot code being able to load some
files only in the first 8Gb. The installer requires that the boot
volume be 8Gb to avoid any possibility of the files being outside the
8Gb limit.

iBook Logic Board extended repair program x2?

2005-12-09 Thread Jean Sinervo
Greetings ...
Just curious if any of you have had to send an iBook G3 in more than
once for video issues covered by the Logic Board Extended Repair Program.

We sent one in several months ago and it worked well until recently, but
now it's exhibiting the same garbled video and blank screen on startup
issues as before the repair.

Apple's been very cooperative and will be picking it up for diagnosis.
Have any of you had the good fortune of having your iBook repaired
more than once for this issue? Do you know exactly what it is they
diagnose/repair with this?

Like I said, just curious ...

Jean

Change the screen resolution to the next size down then back up to
what you are using now. The Trash should now be visible. If you
still can't see it, in finder type tra. The Trash should now be

8Gb limit.

Very true.

My bad on my reply... it originally had a lead in section that mentioned
that I originally installed OS X (10.3) on a 12 GB drive that was in the
Pismo when I got it about a year ago. Again with no partitioning.

I then recently upgraded it to a 60 GB and cloned it when I did so.

With my lead in section, it makes it a little more clear that it doesn't
appear to have the 8 GB limit. Without it, as you point out, it doesn't
really mean much. Where that lead in paragraph went, I have no idea. I'll
chalk it up to either distraction when I was editing my reply, or my
email client once again ate part of it (for a reason I have yet to figure
out, Emailer running under OS X seems to periodically decide the mouse
has clicked and dragged instead of just moving over an area... as a
result, I periodically loose parts of emails that are selected and then
deleted when I press anything on the keyboard, such as the enter key to
send the email... don't know why it happens, and although it is very
annoying, I've not bothered to spend much time trying to figure it out...
with Classic going bye bye on the upcoming Intel based Macs, I'll be
forced to leave Emailer behind anyway)

THANK YOU ALL! - Re: G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread BGbank
Dylan McDermond at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 10:46 AM
G4 iBooks will require Panther or better. It will not boot into any
version of 9. Just buy the retail CD's for Panther or DVD for Tiger,
boot with the C key held down. Nothing more to it than that.
 -Dylan

THANK YOU Dylan. I didn't know about the C key. That sounds simple enough!

Laurent Daudelin at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 8:33 AM
Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that OS 9.1 CD.
Any Macintosh will be able to boot from an appropriate system install CD.
The CD has a version of the OS so that the Mac can boot from it. The only
gotcha is to make sure that the system install CD you have is appropriate
for the specific model of Mac you're planning to use it with.
 -Laurent.

That sounds easy enough to figure out by checking some specs at everymac or
apple, which I did, and so I'm thinking OS9 would NOT work on the G4/800mhz,
first edition. I never had a mac w/No OS, so wasn't sure. Thanks again.

Krow Magnum at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 10:47 AM
First, the price of the iBook should be discounted because there is no
original CD or OS loaded on the iBook. It should be sold with the
original OS and include the CD's but that does not happen all the time
so you will be responsible to get a licensed OS for it.

Yes, thanks. It is discounted, or was, I should say, because I just got
email to my query and in their ad/mac description it had said at the bottom
of the page Buy Now for $400 but he just wrote me to say that was a
mistake, as it was supposed to say that bidding STARTS at $400. I thought
it was too good to be true, lol. Of course he said if no one bids on it he
would gladly sell it for the $400.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if there is
 a problem.

Thanks for that advice. I didn't think about the fact there COULD be
problems unknown UNTIL an OS was put on it. And no, I don't know the people
but they are a power seller at ebay with refurbs and 30-day warranty only.

I love that C key tip, thanks! I wish I had access to it to try it out in
advance but not yet and may not even end up with it if the bidding doesn't
work out.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C key
and following the installer instructions. It's easy to do. I would
suggest buying a retail version of OS 10.3 from the swaplist or eBay
 as soon as possible.

Yes, thanks, I already zeroed in on two good deals at ebay for the
10.4/Tiger but I won't need them if I don't get the G4-without-OS.

Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough RAM and it would be a much
better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever was.

I just don't think these 6gig'er clamshells are enough HD memory. I have
hardly anything on this current G3 clamshell (IE-OE-MS Office 98, etc.) and
it's slow as molasses and bogs down, etc. which is why I was looking for a
newer model with more mhz and more ram and mucho bigger HD. Also it's awful
heavy on the lap! ;-)

If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on it.

Definitely, I agree, thanks! Some good deals on OSX's at ebay, haven't seen
too many through the swap list yet. And since most newer macs COME WITH an
OSX, the only reason I was needing one was due to this possible G4-deal w/o
the OS, but thought if I could get it revved up first w/the OS9 which I
already have... but that's history now, I'm thinking it wouldn't work and if
I get the G4 I would just go ahead and get a separate OSX for it at the same
time since the prices don't look as bad as I expected (for full install
versions).

OS 9 on a G4 is like driving a Cadillac with a Chevette motor in it.
 Ron

heehee, good one! ;-)
What's the most important factor on an ibook for it to work the best/faster?
Ram size, or HD size, or mhz/ghz size?
Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC G3-G4-G5 but
one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another comment at amazon
someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

THANKS Ron, Dylan, and Laurent! With all that advice I now have a much
clearer idea of what I'm doing!
Best regards,

FWIW, I can still right-click on an item and put it into the trash, and
empty the trash via the pulldown.

It may have been pushed off the screen. You can try doing a Clean Up from
the Special Menu, or change your screen resolution to something less than
it is now, and then back again. That should force all icons to be moved
to fit inside the smaller resolution's desktop space, and thus move any

It should as the target disk mode is implemented in the firmware, even
before the machine tries to boot.

Everything like MHz, RAM and even HD speed makes a difference in how
the OS will run. For the average user hard drive size only makes a
difference if it gets loaded too full, but mostly it just limits you
to how many apps you can have installed. Adding RAM will improve any
Macs performance and is easy to do. Adding RAM is always the first
thing I do with a new Mac and I try to add as much as I can afford. In
my opinion RAM gives the best return on your money of all the things
you can add to a computer.

I have a Clamshell 466MHz G3 with a 10GB drive that I have Tiger
running on with 320MB of RAM and it does ok on surfing and light duty.
I may end up putting Panther back on it because it was snappier than
Tiger is and for what I use the Clamshell for I don't need the added
perks of Tiger.

I also had a 300MHz Clamshell with 320MB of RAM and a 6GB hard drive
running Panther but the hard drive size was too small for what I want
loaded on it. Panther ran fine on it though and with thorough cleaning
and burning files to CD's it is easy to keep the junk from overloading
the Mac.

One thing about the seller who has the iBook is that he is probably
reputable but just does not have the OS CD's to sell with it. Too many
eBay sellers sell computers with a newer OS but no CD's which is
software pirating and generally is a sign of their honesty. Without
the CD's the hard drive should be wiped clean. So at least he didn't
add Panther or Tiger to the iBook to sell it for more money and that's
a good sign.

Even the Swaplist has far too many Macs for sale that have newer OS's
installed without CD's included in the sale, which is pirated software
and also a violation of the LEM rules but apparently the nanny never
reads the posts.

What's the most important factor on an ibook for it to work the
best/faster?

Max RAM will have the most salutory effect - I'd say *AT LEAST* 512 MB
is needed, 1 GB or more is even better.

Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more than
adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic stuff you'll
be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.

Re: G4-iBook w/o OS

2005-12-09 Thread John Siple
I have a G4 iBook and got new for a discount because it only has a CD
drive. That was all I wanted really. The seller, Small Dog, sold it
as new old stock and provided the OS. You should know that if you
find a G4 without a DVD drive you'll have to specify that your OS
install disks have to be CD. Tiger is available on CDs from Apple but
the default medium for Tiger is DVD. In fact if you bought Tiger on a
DVD you can send the DVD to Apple and they'll sell you the CD version
for I think $15 or so.

eBay-ers will probably bid the price of that G4 way over $400. I've
also run into sneaky stuff like little extra charges because the
sellers complain that they are just paying too much for PayPal. I
find eBay completely odious. But you may find really good deals via
DealMac, where you can sign up for alerts on low prices for G4 iBooks.

Also remember that a new iBook comes not only with an OS, but with
other bundled applications that aren't part of the OS installation.
So when comparing you may find that the loss of things like
Appleworks or Quicken may factor into your cost analysis.

Caveat emptor.

John

problems unknown UNTIL an OS was put on it. And no, I don't know
the people
but they are a power seller at ebay with refurbs and 30-day
warranty only.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not
boot and install on any other specific Mac. So your OS 9 CD from
your

iBook may or may not work. Since it is an iBook CD your chances are
better that it will work. You will find out when you boot from
the CD

and do the install process whether or not it will work for that
particular iBook. If you have access to the iBook try booting from
your CD by starting it or restarting it with the CD in the iBook
while

holding down the C key.

I love that C key tip, thanks! I wish I had access to it to try it
out in
advance but not yet and may not even end up with it if the bidding
doesn't

work out.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C
key

and following the installer instructions.

Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough RAM and it would
be a much

better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever was.

I just don't think these 6gig'er clamshells are enough HD memory. I
have
hardly anything on this current G3 clamshell (IE-OE-MS Office 98,
etc.) and
it's slow as molasses and bogs down, etc. which is why I was
looking for a
newer model with more mhz and more ram and mucho bigger HD. Also
it's awful

heavy on the lap! ;-)

If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on it.

A quick look at G4 800MHz sales on ebay shows the iBooks sell for

Thank you! The G4-800mhz they are selling has 640mb which the specs say is
the max for that model. Of course the G3-300mhz clamshell I'm using now has
the bare MINImum, 128.

Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective

 Common sense...isn't

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in
addition to looking at the G4-800mhz w/o OS). I guess I do basic stuff
because have never had a machine big/fast enough to do much else, and only
recently got high-speed cable and before that, a total bear to even visit
ebay at all.

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if
the 500mhz would work OK w/Tiger but since that's what he has on it, maybe
it works fine.

2005-12-09 Thread BGbank
Krow Magnum at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 1:21 PM

Everything like MHz, RAM and even HD speed makes a difference in how
the OS will run. For the average user hard drive size only makes a
difference if it gets loaded too full, but mostly it just limits you
to how many apps you can have installed. Adding RAM will improve any
Macs performance and is easy to do. Adding RAM is always the first
thing I do with a new Mac and I try to add as much as I can afford. In
my opinion RAM gives the best return on your money of all the things
you can add to a computer.

Thanks for the advice. I should've put more RAM on this clamshell a long
time ago. I had always heard clamshells were hard to open and install RAM
so was never anxious to mess with it. Would rather put any $ toward
something a little bigger/faster.

I can't imagine fitting another OS of any kind of this 6gig, and I really
don't have that many apps for the same reason. So I keep it for internet
and email and some word-processing, but want to add a newer faster laptop.

And I definitely wanted Tiger on whatever newer machine because I heard that
spotlight is awesome for finding emails (I heard Walt Mossberg, WSJ techie,
on Charlie Rose one night rave about spotlight and how easy it is to find
emails, and that's exactly why I want Tiger. I've got a yahoo email list
and I just can't find emails anymore - I've reached the boggled-mind limit,
lol).

I also had a 300MHz Clamshell with 320MB of RAM and a 6GB hard drive
running Panther but the hard drive size was too small for what I want
loaded on it. Panther ran fine on it though and with thorough cleaning
and burning files to CD's it is easy to keep the junk from overloading
 the Mac.

Well, that's yet another reason I wanted a newer ibook, so it would have
CDRW on it! Zips don't hold much anymore and I want an INTERNAL CDRW vs.
all this stuff hanging off the ibook, like the zip and USB-hub, etc.

Thank you for explaining that! I just replied to the guy and asked why he
did NOT have an OS on it! ;-) Thanks!

BTW, it appears they sell more pc's than mac's so I was thinking maybe they
didn't know too much about macs.

Even the Swaplist has far too many Macs for sale that have newer OS's
installed without CD's included in the sale, which is pirated software
and also a violation of the LEM rules but apparently the nanny never
 reads the posts.

John Siple at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 1:33 PM

I have a G4 iBook and got new for a discount because it only has a CD
drive. That was all I wanted really. The seller, Small Dog, sold it
as new old stock and provided the OS. You should know that if you
find a G4 without a DVD drive you'll have to specify that your OS
install disks have to be CD. Tiger is available on CDs from Apple but
the default medium for Tiger is DVD. In fact if you bought Tiger on a
DVD you can send the DVD to Apple and they'll sell you the CD version
for I think $15 or so.

Thanks, John, for the helpful tips. I've only been looking at machines with
Combo drives because I definitely want an internal CDRW.

And, yeah, I did notice one seller saying they would NOT include the coupon
for getting the DVD in CD from apple. Prior to that I didn't realize there
was such a thing.

eBay-ers will probably bid the price of that G4 way over $400.

I'm sure you're right. I'm not an ebay fan, really, I have never bought one
single thing there before -- never could access the site with dial-up, it
was monstrously slow and I couldn't stand it. But just got high speed and
went to check it out. I was mainly checking out the Buy it Now items
because I'm not into all that frenzied bidding at the last second.

I've also run into sneaky stuff like little extra charges because the
sellers complain that they are just paying too much for PayPal.

Yeah, that's baloney, I see that in a lot of places besides ebay, people
adding $10 or $15 to the price because they have to pay PayPal and they try
to bum it off on the buyer. Even non-profits are doing that, I ran across
two recently who did that, and I say, If you want my $, don't be such a
cheapskate, I'm not going to pay your fees, too! :-/

I find eBay completely odious. But you may find really good deals via
DealMac, where you can sign up for alerts on low prices for G4 iBooks.

;-) I guess we agree ebay isn't the greatest all around. It is a little
scary, especially the unknown people, though there are some regular mac
shops that list items there, too, like powerbookguy and brentsales are two I
noticed and have been mulling over some of their items. I'll have to
revisit DealMac... I haven't checked all places yet.

Also remember that a new iBook comes not only with an OS, but with
other bundled applications that aren't part of the OS installation.
So when comparing you may find that the loss of things like
Appleworks or Quicken may factor into your cost analysis.

Thank you, I did notice the difference in the descriptions of Full-Install
CDs/DVDs and other upgrade versions. Some people are good at writing
detailed descriptions of their items and what is included, even all the
items on the CDs/DVDs, and then others you have to email them 3 times to get
the simple specifics of what you'd like to know!

 Caveat emptor.
 John

The G3/500mhz/55gig/384ram/Tiger guy actually sent me an ebay message asking
if I wanted to look at his ebay item, and he listed the item #. When I
asked how he knew I was even looking, he never gave an answer (I assumed he
saw my name in another bid) but I wondered how cool was it for him to
contact people like that who have bid on other items? I dunno, since I'm
not an experienced ebay'er, maybe that's the norm and is no big deal. Then
it turns out he's French but the item is in TX, and since his English (or
maybe just his typing) is choppy, he doesn't write complete answers. So
that was making me nervous even though his is a good-sounding-deal, too.

So Yes, indeed, beware.
Thanks!

using your figures, it should be $400-$600 max. And they are saying $30 for

A few weeks ago I did start out by looking at the brand new ibooks but

G3 iBook LCD question

2005-12-09 Thread GalBros
Hi, what is the exchange matrix for LCDs for iBooks, starting with the 500mhz
dual USB on up?

I recently obtained an iBook 500mhz with a busted screen. I was told all of
the non-clamshell G3 iBook LCDs could be used with it, but the 800mhz and
900mhz LCDs would be a slightly different color.

Thank you for the help!

Software piracy

2005-12-09 Thread GalBros

In a message dated 12/9/05 1:22:31 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

One thing about the seller who has the iBook is that he is probably
reputable but just does not have the OS CD's to sell with it. Too many
eBay sellers sell computers with a newer OS but no CD's which is
software pirating and generally is a sign of their honesty. Without
the CD's the hard drive should be wiped clean. So at least he didn't
add Panther or Tiger to the iBook to sell it for more money and that's
a good sign.

I don't know about it being an indicator of anyone's honesty or not; what
about situations where individuals are selling their personal laptops after
being
upgraded? Doesn't the act of piracy require some requisite mental state?

Also, doesn't the frequently seen Buyer must erase drive after reviewing OS
pretty much cover any loose ends?

It does not indicate piracy in any way. For example
when I upgraded tp Tiger I bought the family pack with
4 or 5 installs.

Re: Gene - Re: THANK YOU ALL! - Re: G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread Krow Magnum
On 12/9/05, BGbank [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

G3-G4-G5 but one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another
comment at amazon someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more than
adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic stuff you'll
be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.
  Gene Osburn
  Common sense...isn't

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in
addition to looking at the G4-800mhz w/o OS). I guess I do basic stuff
because have never had a machine big/fast enough to do much else, and only
recently got high-speed cable and before that, a total bear to even visit
 ebay at all.

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if
the 500mhz would work OK w/Tiger but since that's what he has on it, maybe
 it works fine.

 Thanks Gene!
 Gail

The advise I always give is spend as much as you can afford. I can't
imagine 800MHz as only being adequate for Tiger. My 466 Clam does
just fine with surfing, email and ebaying. My 1.5GHz G4 Powerbook
doesn't do those things that much faster. A 300MHz G3 iBook would be
pushing it but an 800MHz G4 iBook will handle Tiger with no problems.

iBooks are made for Light duty use and he's comparing it to
something you would need a G4 Powerbook or G4/G5 Powermac for. Anyone
using high-end graphics apps or video apps should not be using an
iBook anyway. iBooks are for the home computer user and an 800MHz G4
has plenty of oomph for that. As mentioned 512MB or better RAM helps
too.

Now that you have fast internet you can get on the wifi wagon too !
The main reason I have a Powerbook and iBook is because I can use wifi
and lounge on the couch, in bed or out enjoying the weather. (I live
in FL so it's nice enough to go outside in my shorts and iBook here)

Caution though. it can make one turn into a couch potato ;-)

And if you sell a Mac with one of those installs it should include a
license transfer with it and you will have one less license. The vast
majority of eBay sellers do not buy multi-licenses.

Otherwise it should have the original OS on it as the Mac was
originally sold with that OS license.

Not cool at all ! I'm pretty sure that's a violation of eBay policy
and is sleazy at the least. And if he is overseas but the item is here
in the states I would be very very cautious ! That is a very common
scam used on Craigslist and other places laptops are sold.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions! And funny, while looking around the
past few weeks, I had ended up on that Craigslist site, too! Not even sure
how I found it, probably google. I'll steer clear of that one.

The G3-French guy, when I first replied to his first message (both of us
using the ebay message center), I got an automated reply from a US Air Force
email account which had English and French wording and his name. So I
thought that was a good thing if he was in the military. But when I asked
Mr. G3 in the next ebay message if he was in the military, he wrote that No,
he was not, but he had access to that Air Force email account. Now THAT, I
thought, was also really strange! ... unless he is dating some Air Force
lady! ;-) BTW, he's also a 0 feedback person, a brand newbie on ebay,
but then so am I so didn't want to hold that one thing against him.

Anything I buy through on-line places like eBay I only pay with Paypal
which will protect the buyer or USPS money orders. Nobody wants the US
Postal Inspectors on their butt from mail fraud and it's even worse if
a USPS money order was payment.
 --

 http://krowmagnum.4mg.com/

I agree about PayPal and credit card thru PayPal, that way you get double
protection if needed. And surprisingly, Mr. French-G3's item shows he does
accept PayPal. -- Good to know about the USPS money orders and them sicking
the calvary on fraudulent sellers! I didn't think of that!

ah, the beauty of Gmail. I would never argue against the merits of Tiger,
but if the email is the one thing pushing you over the edge, you might want
to consider moving to gmail. I would assume anyone with gmail would have
 plenty of invites - I know I have 100.

Hi Van, when I first heard of gmail sometime back I got excited about it and
tried to sign up but at the time it said I didn't have the
correct-something... maybe it was browser, can't remember now. I'm using
the highest IE there is for OS9, so I'm stuck until I move up to OSX. So I
checked again just now and it says something about by invite only...?

A few days ago I saw two authors on TV who had written books about google...
The Search and I think the other was Google Company. Maybe it's the
same for all search engine companies, but the one man said google stores
every single search done by every single person on the planet which, google
says, is so they can come up with better services, etc., but this author
said it could also be used, for instance, in divorce cases where a spouse
could get all the search info on their partner, etc., so he didn't think it
was a good thing.

never a fan of on-line mail services until Gmail came along.

I've never used webmail either... too cumbersome, too slow (or at least it
WAS). Who wants to have to go log on the net just to get into your email?

I had a Yahoo account for years but rarely used it and I use Gmail
 exclusively now.

Wow, big switch. I've never used any yahoo accounts I ever made either.
They almost make you have one just to use their other services, but it's a
waste of space. I don't like yahoo search engine either. I love google
search, totally clean search page, no junk, etc.

I don't use my ISP email at all because Gmail is so
 much easier.

Wow, now THAT I would have to see and experience! ;-)

I've used Gmail for a couple of years almost and have
used 7% of my storage space and I could have thrown away a bunch more
but I keep an archive of this list and 3 others.

That's amazing... I may have to give it a test run with one of my lesser
accounts and see how it feels.
Thanks! Very interesting! I do LOVE google search feature, and I love all
websites that have a google search feature. None others compare to it as
far as I'm concerned. So what if they are saving all my searches, lol, I'm
probably already considered a domestic terrorist (=by having politically
incorrect opinions).

No. There are plenty of stories of people getting busted for

Maybe, legally, maybe not. But it's like someone not to loot the
store like everyone else is then giving them a shove. On second
thought I don't think it is legal as they are sending it to you
without the disks so at that point it is illegal, even if you do
erase the disk immediately.

It probably is one of the most broken laws but don't connect eBay with
legality. eBay lets lots of things go on that are not legal.

Macs can have an OS without the CD's but it should be the original OS
that came with the Mac. And somebody somewhere probably has
the original CD's too which should go with that Mac. There are not
that many lost or destroyed install CD's.

School and corporate sales regularly sell computers with the hard
drives wiped clean and no install CD's which is why some have no OS
installed. Technically I could buy one and install an OS from one of
my CD's and if it is what came on the Mac I am not violating my single
user license on my install CD because the Mac had a license when sold
for that OS. But if I install Tiger on more than one Mac in my home
with a single user license I am violating the user agreement. I do it,
and a lot of people do it but it is still violates the user agreement.

I would file a complaint with eBay, but don't expect much to come from it.

I had a seller repeatedly threaten me through eBay's messaging system
and I filed a complaint but kept getting a form response from eBay
asking for copies of the offending email including the header. Duh
I responded 3 times that it was not email, but their own messaging
system. I finally gave up after a while when I realized eBay does not
care.

This was all over the fact he was selling a G4 with Tiger and all the
Adobe apps loaded so I asked him if the CD's were included because I
wanted to bid on it since he was local. He responded that he would
make copies of the OS and Adobe CD's for me. That's all I needed to
let him know what I thought and he got a little po'd.

Since he was a local seller and I had hoped he would find my address
through eBay and show up at my house but he never did.. I'd have a
shiney new dual-core G5 right now if he did.

One thing about the seller who has the iBook is that he is probably
reputable but just does not have the OS CD's to sell with it. Too many
eBay sellers sell computers with a newer OS but no CD's which is
software pirating and generally is a sign of their honesty.

There is no legal obligation to include the original media with the computer.

The original OS license is tied to the computer hardware. Failing to
include the media is kosher. BUT then using that media on another
computer is a license violation and copyright infringement.

Without the CD's the hard drive should be wiped clean.

I don't know about it being an indicator of anyone's honesty or not; what
about situations where individuals are selling their personal
laptops after being upgraded? Doesn't the act of piracy require some
requisite mental state?

Nothing mental about it. Well, except maybe the dope-induced IQ of
the legislators that wrote the DMCA.

Also, doesn't the frequently seen Buyer must erase drive after reviewing OS
pretty much cover any loose ends?

Original OS vs Upgraded by purchase/retail.

It's ok for the original OS to be on the computer forever, regardless
of where the media ends up.

If the computer has an upgraded OS then that OS' media (and,
technically, a letter from the seller to the buyer transferring the
license) should be included with the computer. If it's not, then the
copy of the OS on the computer is illegal and should have been wiped
before it left the seller's posession.

There is no such thing as reviewing the OS being legit, ever.

That's great to know. The G3-500mhz was just sold (Mr. Frenchy), but the
G4-800mhz with No-OS ends at 9pm and one person already did bid on it
finally. Don't think I can stay awake 'til 9pm...

iBooks are made for Light duty use and he's comparing it to
something you would need a G4 Powerbook or G4/G5 Powermac for. Anyone
using high-end graphics apps or video apps should not be using an
iBook anyway. iBooks are for the home computer user and an 800MHz G4
has plenty of oomph for that. As mentioned 512MB or better RAM helps
 too.

Awesome! Then that G4 is a good machine for Tiger. No video apps or
high-end graphics here, mostly Text Text and more Text, lol, and a few pics
now and then.

Now that you have fast internet you can get on the wifi wagon too !

heehee, would love to be completely wireless! Mr. French's G3-500mhz
actually had an airport card (if he is for real, that is), as most of them
do not include the airport card.

The main reason I have a Powerbook and iBook is because I can use wifi
and lounge on the couch, in bed or out enjoying the weather. (I live
in FL so it's nice enough to go outside in my shorts and iBook here)

That's the only place I ever do computing is legs stretched out on the bed.
Sat crouched over a desk for too many years on the job. So this is the only
way to compute! As for outside, enjoy while you can as this is THE ONLY
time of year that outside is even bearable. -- Also a native Floridian

Caution though. it can make one turn into a couch potato ;-)

Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC
G3-G4-G5 but one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another
comment at amazon someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more than
adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic stuff you'll
be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.

 Common sense...isn't

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in

because have never had a machine big/fast enough to do much else, and only
recently got high-speed cable and before that, a total bear to even visit
 ebay at all.

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if
the 500mhz would work OK w/Tiger but since that's what he has on it, maybe
 it works fine.

Then there's the BSA, ?Business Software Association? The

Thanks, I thought it was odd for hm to contact me that way, too.

His G3 auction just ended and don't worry, I wasn't going for it... too many
suspicious things with that guy. Somebody got a pretty 'good deal' though
(IF Mr. French is for real and follows through): $391 for a G3-500mhz,
384mg, 55gig, Combo, Tiger, 12. Besides the Tiger, it was that 55gig that
really turned me on, lol -- would never run out of space ever again! ;-)
 /Gail

There are not many good deals on eBay. There is a reason auctions
end with a low price. For the same reason you didn't bid, there was
probably something fishy there.

You say 55GB will be enough ? LOL. wait till you have that much
storage. You'll find a way to fill it.

I used to think 4GB would be nirvana Now I'm thinking a couple of
new 250GB drives would be enough for me. I only have an internal 80GB
and a Firewire 120GB right now and that's not enough.

Samsung mobile phone driver??

2005-12-09 Thread Stephen Peterson
Verizon Wireless has recently started supporting Mac internet access via
its cell phones with a USB data cable (called Mobile Office kit) or high
speed connections with a specific (Kyocera) PCMCIA card. Well it turns
out they don't have any driver for the Macs for the USB connection and
will only support the expensive PCMCIA high-speed connection. The Quick
to Net USB solution allows many people like myself to connect after 9
and weekends for free with no airtime charges. PCers get this service.
The only reason it doesn't work on my Lombard is that it won't recognize
the phone as a modem correctly. I attempted to use the OS X10.3.2
built-in drivers and got the phone to connect with the 3Com Impact
Analog 14.4 driver but the verification (username and password) fails.
Has anyone succeded with connecting a Samsung a650 cell phone to
Verizons ISP service? Any driver suggestions or otherwise?

ebay has a policy about not allowing pirated software but they do not
police it because they are not liable because of the agreement when
you sign up. Not being liable does not make one completely innocent in
the matter it just keeps them out of civil court.

The Phone company analogy doesn't work because they have no control
over what you say or do until it is said or done. eBay has complete
control over what is posted for sale or auction but they don't care
enough to spend the time and money to make sure people are doing the
right thing. Until someone complains loud enough and it may make them
look bad..

I could honestly care less if Apple does anything to protect their own
rights. That's their problem to deal with and they should but they
don't want to spend the money on it. MS spends plenty on anti-piracy
issues and because of their business practices people have less
consideration for MS than Apple. Plus MS has much more licenses than
Apple so it costs them a lot more money.

And I would never expect anyone but myself to protect my rights,
especially not MS, Apple or the US govt. (I just made it on another
list with that one)

Panther on Lombard 400

2005-12-09 Thread Caleb Cupples

Hi,

I've got an OS X Panther install disc that came with a Mac mini, and I
can't get my Lombard to boot from the DVD. It says install disc, but
the Lombard won't even mount it. If this will help, the Lombard is
currently running OS X Jaguar with 192 MB of RAM, the 6 GB Hard Drive
and it's got the LG DVD-ROM drive.

Thanks,

I recently upgraded my Pismo's drive to a 60 GB drive and I cloned my

and
all works just fine, so I'd have to guess that no, there is no 8 GB

that does not exceed the first 8 GB.

The reason that all the PowerBooks after the Wallstreet II have the

Old World ROM. The Pismo doesn't have the first 8 GB limitation because
of this.

This should clarify things some.

I've never used webmail either... too cumbersome, too slow (or at
least it
WAS). Who wants to have to go log on the net just to get into your
email?

I had a Yahoo account for years but rarely used it and I use Gmail
exclusively now.

I don't use my ISP email at all because Gmail is so
much easier.

Wow, now THAT I would have to see and experience! ;-)

I've used Gmail as my only email account for nearly a year now; and to
think I had to be talked into it by a friend because of my dislike of
webmail I use their POP service, which means a copy goes directly
to my desktop email client (OS X Mail) and I still have everything on
their servers if I wanna search for anything in particular. I can
still check via webmail when I'm on the move and using my PowerBook --
love that flexibility!

I've used Gmail for a couple of years almost and have
used 7% of my storage space and I could have thrown away a bunch more
but I keep an archive of this list and 3 others.

That's amazing... I may have to give it a test run with one of my
lesser

accounts and see how it feels.

Lemme know if you want an invite.

Re: Software Piracy

2005-12-09 Thread macnifico

Hi, Listers!

It is permisible by the eBay rules, to contact you about a similar
item being auctioned in eBay.
It is NOT permisible to contact you to offer you a similar item
by-passing eBay, (a private sale).
It is permisible to sell a computer with the OS only. The rules do
not specify that the OS should be the original one for the computer.
It is NOT permisible to include other software, like M$ Office, Adobe
Photoshop, etc., if you advertise it, your auction will be cancelled,
even if you include the erase disk clause.
In more than a thousand eBay transactions, only ONCE did the seller
sent me a letter transferring something to me. Really, he included
the disks and a letter of transfer. Only one guy, in more than 300
computers and programs bought through eBay

And an interesting story: I bought a Duo 230 some years ago, that
included ALL the e-mail that this gal in a famous university ever
sent.
I'm seriously considering writing a novel based on this gal's VERY
interesting love life, plus all the problems she had trying to adapt
to the big university environment. It was very interesting reading,
and made me a fanatic of the wipe every HD and re-install
everything before selling it.
Problem is, English is a second language to me, so I'm sure I would
not do justice to the material. :-)

Where did you find that ? The original OS is a license issue, not an
ebay issue. If the OS license is not being sold it is a copyright
violation.

As far as I know it's still a violation of the OS user agreement and
ebay is specific about copyright infringement. There are too many
different OS company and licenses for them to make one rule about
OS's.

It is NOT permisible to include other software, like M$ Office, Adobe
Photoshop, etc., if you advertise it, your auction will be cancelled,
even if you include the erase disk clause.

This is the only thing I could find that specifically deals with
software not allowed:

Software loaded onto a hard drive that is not being sold with the
original media (disks, manuals, etc.)

Only occasionally do I see any CD's or DVD's included with computers.
eBay does not really care that much and expect the members to police
it and inform them of violations. But good luck getting anything done
even if you can find where to file a complaint and file one.

The erase disk clause is a joke.. Everyone knows what that means.

All of this is irrelevant anyway because you can put a Mac G3 or g4 on
eBay any day of the week loaded with OS X Panther or Tiger, Adobe,
Quark, etc. with no disks and it will not be cancelled.

I see it all the time and have filed complaints when they use the apps
as a selling point. Not one auction has been closed due to my
complaints.

The problem I have with it is i get tired of telling people that they
didn't buy the Operating System and/or application they thought they
bought. When there is a problem and or a boot disk is needed they are
screwed. Most of those people bought Macs with current OS's and not
what was original for the Mac. Many times they buy the Mac
specifically for the software loaded. What happens when the hard drive
dies ? They die all the time..

Lombard Drive Upgrades

2005-12-09 Thread Caleb Cupples

Hi,
Sorry for the stupid post, but what hard drives are recommended for
upgrading a Lombard? I'm asking, because I'm quickly realizing the
limitations of the stock 6GB drive. Namely, my iTunes collection that
I'm moving over from my Windoze machine takes up a good 1.2 GB and I
only had 3 GB to work with when I got it, thanks to the Classic
environment. Plus, I don't want to get rid of OS 9.2 because of the DVD
capabilities. Is it possible to use a USB enclosure to copy the
contents of the current drive to a new one, before swapping them out?

Any help will be appreciated,
Caleb

Buyer Protection (was iBooks eBay)

2005-12-09 Thread illovox
That's why you should always pay with a credit card. Paypal may come
through, but they will laways take forever. Though they are getting better
(due to vociferous public complaint) a sure way to insure yourself is to
ALWAYS use your credit card. If someone WON'T take a credit card payment,
it is not unlikely that he or she have dealt with reversed credit card
payments before, i.e. cheated someone and was caught--often not a good sign.
By using a credit card that offers buyer protection, you are covered--fully.
I have been reimbursed fully in three bad deals totalling over 2k in value
in the past year. Despite ...we all (consumers) end up paying the cost in

Re: iBook Logic Board extended repair program x2?

2005-12-09 Thread Sionnach Aisling

Hmmmph! How timely.

First off, let me say that I am having the same
problem with my G4 iBook, which, of course, Apple
refuses to admit there is a problem with so they won't
extend the warranty on those boards...

But more on to your subject; my neighbor has a 12 G3
iBook which had it's first logic board die about 6
months ago. It was replaced when she took it to an
Apple store and they shipped it out for repair. It
came back with a cracked case plastic just above the
trackpad and another cracked plastic around the LCD.
I told her to complain... she didn't. Two weeks ago,
it died again. She took it in and it just came back
tonight...

I took it apart to add a 512MB Ram module for her and
found a broken piece of case plastic floating around
under the keyboard... nice. Then I noticed that the
Num Lock LCD on the keyboard was mashed over under the
num lock key... also nice. I fixed the keyboard and
removed the case plastic piece. After firing the
machine up for about 30 seconds, it immediately began
exhibiting the symptoms of a bad logic board again...
the more we rebooted and the longer it ran, the worse
it got.

I think it's completely disgusting. There is no way
they could have tested that machine for any length of
time after they replaced the logic board. If this
problem is still persisting even after they've
admitted a problem, why have they not fixed the
problem on the boards that are out there so it doesn't
continue?

I could rant on and on about this. The past few
years, Apple hardware has gone right down the tubes.
I still have a COlor Classic, SE30, PB3400, PowerMac
7300, and Wallstreet which are all running flawlessly
with never any problems. I can't seem to keep new
iBooks running for longer than 6 months to a year
though... G3 or G4.

I like the machine, and I will keep using it, but I
back up VERY frequently and trust it about as far as I
can throw it.

Apple has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Pardon?

All Macs are licensed for their original OS. Period. You cannot

Most PCs are licensed for their original copy of Windows. Likewise,

Not true. Adobe and MS (to take two examples I've been hit with)
have both hired copyright police companies to watch eBay. If you
offer computers containing their products and no media license,
there is a good chance the auctions will be canceled. And if you do
it repeatedly, besides eBay suspension, you'll get a nice registered
letter from the copyright holder's lawyers. :\

I see it all the time and have filed complaints when they use the apps
as a selling point. Not one auction has been closed due to my
complaints.

As appropriate. It's not your copyright, therefore you have no legal
standing to interfere with the auction. IOW, when you see an
infringing auction, it's nice to report it to eBay - but you really
need to report it to the copyright owner or their legal agent if you
expect any action to be taken.

See eBay's help area for information on their Verified Rights Owner
(VeRO) program. aka the copyright police authorization rules.

correctly. I attempted to use the OS X10.3.2 built-in drivers and
got the phone to connect with the 3Com Impact Analog 14.4 driver but
the verification (username and password) fails. Has anyone succeded
with connecting a Samsung a650 cell phone to Verizons ISP service?
Any driver suggestions or otherwise?

I donno about Samsung phones in particular, but Verizon in general...

Their network is set up for the higher speed access. The slower free
Q2N service is done over the same network but with a limited DCE
speed.

Authorization fails because the network dynamically steps the DCE
speed down right after you tell it the username qnc. At that
point, your modem hasn't stepped down, so further communication fails.

The trick is that you have to tell your phone to shift down to the
lower speed (14.4 Kbps) *before* connecting to their network. That
way, when the network adjusts the speed, the modem is already there!

On a PC, Verizon's software does this using some funky codes sent to
the cell phone over that USB link. That software also resets the
phone after the call.

On a Mac... Well, we don't have that sophisticated driver capability.
Best we can do is send a few simple AT commands to the phone's modem
(via the modem driver scripts). So you fix the speed match problem
by using the phone's secret tech support/diagnostic/service menu
and permanently (until manually changed) lock the DTE/DCE speed to
14.4/14.4.

After doing the above change to our Nokia phones, we're able to use
Panther's Verizon Support (PC 5220) script quite reliably.

- Dan.

That's because Apple puts some kind of protection on the CD and DVDs that
they provide with a new Mac. Said CD or DVD will only boot the specific
model you purchased. You need to buy the full retail release which doesn't
have this limitation.

It does not indicate piracy in any way. For example when I

And if you sell a Mac with one of those installs it should include
a license transfer with it and you will have one less license. The
vast majority of eBay sellers do not buy multi-licenses.

I don't beleive you can break up a family-pack license that way.
The point of the discount is that the licensees are all part of
your household.

Correct:

Search http://store.apple.com/ for 'MA191' such as

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore?productLearnMore=MA191

Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use
one copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-
labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in
the same household and used by persons who occupy that same
household. By household we mean a person or persons who share the
same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or
condominium, but shall also extend to student members who are primary
residents of that household but residing at a separate on-campus
location. This license does not extend to business or commercial users.

i.e. you can buy it for your family and your kids in college, but you
can't buy a family pack for the office and use it on your home
computer or sell any of the other 4 on eBay.
