New iLife 06
Good Afternoon everybody, I received my copy of iLife 06 on Friday and have been checking it out since then. I have to say that so far, the changes to iPhoto are pretty interesting and useful. - Faster initial loading of your photos - Full screen editing - Multi-photo comparisons - Transparent date markers as you scroll through your iPhoto library - Seamless integration with iWeb etc etc iWeb itself is a pretty cool little application. I was able to set up a basic website with all kinds of hyperlinks, photos etc in less than 10 minutes. Very intuitive ! It does not look like a custom job but is great for those just wanting to set up blogs, photos of the kids for the grandparents etc etc. I have not explored iDVD and iMovie too much yet and never really got into Garage Band so didn't check that one out immediately. Anyway, I just thought I would write a little preview for you should you be considering buying iLife. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Re: security re: file sharing/networks
Is it illegal if I'm visiting a person and log on with my PowerBook? Or if 2 unrelated persons are sharing an apartment, is it illegal for both to utilize the service? Seems like a gray legal area. Jerry You will find that there usually is not a gray area at all if you read the TOS ( terms of service) for the ISP involved. They are quite specific about how their services are to be used. Of course, I am sure there are hundreds of people who visit friends with wireless connections and just open up their laptops and surf. Is it legal ? again depends on the ISP TOS, but there can be serious consequences. i.e. The person paying for the service would be liable for anything illegal their guest/visitors were caught doing on-line as it all would come back to their IP address. Unless you could prove it was your guests who were responsible, you would be the one going to jail. This was just one concern I had about my neighbour and her brother having access to my network. As for 2 unrelated persons sharing an apartment - In most cases, tenants will share the cost of the service and both have legal access to it. As long as this is permitted by the ISP, it's legal. Most ISP's allow this as many families will have multiple computers and want internet access for all of them. Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Granted, the telcos and cable industry with their lobbyists have managed to persuade congress otherwise, but those laws are unenforceable anyway- is anyone doing time in club fed for theft of service with their home computer? Just because the laws governing the theft of signal are currently difficult to enforce, it doesn't mean it's okay to break these laws. It would seem that as long as you can get away with something, it's okay for you or others to do it. Here is an example of a law being temporarily unenforceable - There is a major riot going on in a large city and people are looting stores/businesses left and right because there are not enough police resources to apprehend them. quoting/posting on G-Books list
Dear G-Book list members, Over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed that a few people are quoting massive amounts of unnecessary text in their replies or replying to a thread that already has multiple lines of quoted text, and adding their own. This creates quite a confusing tangle of text and is not all that easy to follow at times. Please also keep in mind that it can be even more difficult and frustrating for members who may have deteriorating vision and/or may be using text readers. I certainly would not want them to be excluded from enjoying the discussions on the list. I am asking that you please quote just the specific text that you are responding to and keep it simple and easy to read for everybody else. Regarding the last part of your note - when I was visiting my dad over Christmas, I obtained permission from his ISP to temporarily use his cable internet connection. However, when I opened my Powerbook to check some websites, the network Linksys popped up instead. I changed to my dad's network immediately. Re: OT: the long arm of the law
Hello again G-Book list members, Please be aware that as a List Nanny, I attempt to maintain a relatively low profile in general. I am pleased to say that I participate in this list far more frequently in the capacity as a list member than I ever have as a list nanny. However, there are times when list nannies have to step in and intervene I feel this is one of them. I have seen other lists deteriorate with astonishing speed, into considerable mayhem, when seemingly innocuous or even general political comments were made and went unchecked. I do not want to see that happen to the G-Books and I am sure you don't either. Therefore, this is a general request to all list members to refrain from continuing this thread in a political vein. I respect that you all have political viewpoints but the G-Books list is simply not an appropriate place to discuss them. I think the same things applies to ISPs. I doubt they fret over the open WAP where someone shares access periodically to their broke neighbor. It's the ones that facilitate the neighbor's bandwidth-sucking p2p server, or the spammer, or ... - Dan. Hello Dan, I agree - My ISP didn't seem too alarmed at all when I discussed the fact that my neighbour was attempting to get onto my connection. However, he was very quick to warn that were I to allow this to happen that I could be held responsible for everything she or her network analyst brother did on-line. Should he be the type to download thousands of child porn files or engage an undercover officer in a chat about sex with a minor, I would be the one explaining myself when the police came to the door with a search warrant and seized all my stuff - just as Bob suggested. I could face charges and at least temporary seizure of my computers and all my hard drives - not to mention the possibility of being arrested and taken to the police station. No thank you !! My neighbour was back at my door this AM asking again (third time this past week) for access and the WEP password. She was extremely ticked off when I informed that I was still not interested or comfortable with giving her access, then said her brother was going to be coming by to deal with me later. So, I have taken the router off-line for now and am just staying wired directly to the cable modem until this situation settles down a little. Re: security re: file sharing/networks
I have a D-Link wireless router - there are options to change from the WEP 128 bit encryption to WPA personal.Would doing this create enough of a wall for most people trying to hack in ? While I have been trying not to use the wireless router (given the situation with my neighbour that I mentioned earlier today), I really need to have access to it here and there as I have a lot of work to get done and cannot easily do it at my computer desk. I was thinking I could perhaps create another network name and WPA and perhaps stay hidden from her brother. Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... security re: file sharing/networks
Hi there, Just recently, a neighbour came to me asking if I could share my internet connection with her for a nominal fee per month because she doesn't feel like paying the full amount to get the service set up herself etc etc . She stated that her brother had been at her place and had detected I had a wireless connection (given my wireless router). I told her that I had no interest in this arrangement at all as it is obviously illegal and I am also concerned about the security of my files. She has shown up a couple of times at my door since then saying that her brother is a network analyst and would ensure the cable company would never know about her surfing on my connection and said all he would need is my WEP password to access it. Their persistence is not only getting annoying, but concerning as well. Currently, I have turned the router off and just have the cable modem going directly into the PB but this is really an inconvenience to me as the whole idea of buying the router was so that I could use my PB anywhere in my place. I would really like to know if there are any measures I can take to protect my connection so they cannot access it and to ensure my files are safe. Amber PS. It did sort of strike me as odd that even though her brother is a Network administrator/analyst, he has not been able to get past the WEP password. He also told me that they usually hold onto computers until the parts come in but that Applecare had told him to let me leave with the PB and return when they call to indicate the parts are in, for installation. Soit appears going up the chain of command does help. I am still under the Applecare warranty period and was actually told by Applecare technical support that these items were covered. Google Earth
I should add that I did notice one glaring glitch on the Google Earth Beta version : it would suddenly zoom in extremely rapidly to where you couldn't see anything at all because it was so magnified, and then quit. I have just downloaded the new version and it appears it is the full version (not Beta) so perhaps this problem will be resolved now. Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Link to Google Earth/Sandra
Sandra, No worries - When you open that page, do you see a green box on the upper right side ? It is just above the minimum system configuration list. Ensure that you have marked the Mac OS X and click on the Download Google Earth bar - the dmg file will start downloading and you'll have the official, full version. Macs and eBay
Hi, This is partially related to my previous question. It appears that eBay is not really that Mac friendly. In fact, in a discussion with one of their live help people today, I was told if you were using a regular computer, you would be fine when I was asking about the sign-in problems I was having. I was told also that I needed to update my browser..although my browser is Safari and I have the latest version. Anyway, it appears that some of the problems I am having are related to my not using a regular computer and not having an up-to-date browser that works with some sites. Sometimes I can't sign in at all even though just a couple hours earlier, I had used the same user name and password. It's very frustrating - especially when I have some auctions running and more to list and I can't access them without going through this ridiculous sign-in routine whereby I have to enter my user name and password over and over again until it catches. I assure you there is no typing error on my part either. I will be setting up an auction listing and hit continue and then it will take me back to the sign-in page !! I am indeed running 10.4.3 and just installed the most recent security update which is supposed to address Safari related problems amongst others. Apple Software update is not listing any others. Which ones were you referring to ? As I mentioned in my other note to the list, all of these problems just started occurring a week ago but I have not installed any new software at all. To follow your Gasoline analogy, he was referring to Mac's more as dirty diesel and PC's as Gold/Premium. He seemed to feel that their PC programmers were completely incapable of making eBay work on Safari and suggested I upgrade to Explorer 6.0. I immediately informed him that changing to Explorer in any shape or form would be a DOWNGRADE and that as I understood, Microsoft stopped working on Explorer for Mac after version 5.2 because of the popularity (and superiority) of Safari. I think Garagesale does this - I just learned about it from another member here when we were talking about this Mac/Safari problem. Safari problem ?
Hi, I recently have been having problems with Safari. For example, the websites that I used to be able to sign on with a password immediately are now rejecting it over and over again. It will normally take 6 or 7 tries before I finally get signed on. This is not poor typing on my part. Ebay is a prime example...not only do I have trouble signing in but midway through checking my auctions, I have to keep signing in - despite checking off a box to stay signed in. Any ideas as to what may be going on ? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Forgot to add this info : Running Safari 2.0.2 on OS 10.4.3. (and Explorer 5.2 but I prefer just Safari). This problem is also occurring on Explorer and Netscape. Hi Andrew, I agree the 17 would be more difficult to use on a plane and certainly not as portable. I have never had problems using the 15 on a plane. The pull out trays are just the right size for it and It was clearly designed for portability as well. I find the small 12 screen causes too much eye strain, especially on a plane where the ride is not always smooth in the first place. I think there is a strong argument for personal preference here. I regularly walk around with my 15 PB locally and don't find it problematic at all.
