Yahoo groups does the same thing. But you can always sign in to your
account on either system and see your post in the list of posts, if
you question whether or not your post went thru.

I went to send them a complaint email, and their contact page wouldn't
give me a valid address that I could see, so I did a shotgun attempt;.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] seems to
have gone thru. (I tried president@ but that bounced.)

I started the letter with a quote of their line about not supporting
Macs. I noted that macs are a recognized, and valid platform, and
the browsers are industry standard. I ended my complaint with:

I guess I stop buying Stonyfield products--they're obviously not
compatible with MY system.

Hopefully they "get the message." :)

I just tried the Stonyfield website: with FireFox, I get little
"adblock" boxes all over their home graphic, and if I move the cursor
around, the images sometimes pop up.

Tried the same page with iCab. No problems--I can see all the
graphics, and access the individual pages. (Is there one with
printable coupons? I see the one where they want an email address and
they'll send you e-coupons, but I really don't need another company
sending me "information" - even if, as they claim, they won't sell the
email info.

Personally, I don't use Safari any more--found too many times it

The whole privacy problem is going to happen wherever the list is

majordomo listserv program. We generate a fair amount of bandwidth
for someone to donate this kind of service. Any of the commercial

archiving messages. Just don't send something you wouldn't want a
5-year-old to read.

(And I'm still trying to find that firefox extention to force an https

Kristina, look for the link at the top of the screen after you've

After you've got that, click the button that says "choose email" and

Sure. If you use Dan's link, you're asked to use or create a google
account. Not a problem if you already have an account on their system
you want to use. All posts will either stay in the google groups
area, or be posted to your gmail account.

If however you want the emails to go to another email address, say
your own ISP, then you use the join-by-email address I posted. (I
think Yahoo has a similar setup re: how to get on a list.)

Just wondering what other people's results are using Shiira--but it
doesn't seem too stable on my PB--it keeps bombing, and I keep having

It's a nice interface, but if it doesn't want to play nice on my

Forgive my faulty memory re: which disk here--

To install classic under Tiger, you boot up the accessories(?) disc

faulty--it's the disk everyone looks at and figures they have no use

One of the selections there is to install classic--use that and you'll

Re: Wifi antenna

2006-01-27 Thread Howard Katz
This still requires a physical connection to the card. I'm not keen
on making this kind of adaptation. Besides, if I read it correctly,
one of the ways to attach the antenna is to go thru the PC card slot?
I'm using my slot with a CF card.

I was told about, but haven't had a chance to track down, a USB
antenna--thin design, could fit easily into a carrying bag. I don't
know if these just use the physical connection to grab signal, or if
they need software drivers to work.

Trouble is, these aren't my basestations, so I can't do any

Wifi antenna

I've got a situation where I'm trying to use the wifi connection in my

Re: Phone listing widget?

2006-01-23 Thread Howard Katz
Woody--what I did was call up the dashboard, and then clicked on the
plus-sign-in-the-circle at the bottom left of the screen. I then
scrolled thru my widgets until I saw the "people" widget "white, arrow
pointing to a book or the business widget (same image except for being
yellow.) click on them and they'll become available.

The Business one leaves a bit to be desired--places like schools,
colleges, and any business that doesn't fit the preset list can't be
found using the widget. (Locksmith for example is also missing.). If
you click on the info "i" and then the DA icon, you CAN go to the
website and look them up that way, but it's an extra step.

Drive needs repair? Should I worry?

2006-01-19 Thread Howard Katz
I'm not sure if I need to do anything here. I just finished running
the drive utility, and got this message:

Checking Extended Attributes file.
Reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
eeds to be repaired.",1)
Macintosh HD
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

This is an 80 gig drive in a 15" AL 'book.

But the repair button wouldn't become solid so I couldn't try it. So,
I ran Drive Genius, from the CD. I've run the repair function 3 times
now and it keeps telling me that the disk need to be repaired.
Doesn't want to DO that repair tho!. I haven't done the rebuild
function--really not sure if that would help or not.

I haven't noticed any problems using the 'book, and I have a backup
using SuperDuper that's 3 days old. What would you all suggest I
do--run rebuild, keep trying repair until it takes, scrub the drive
and start over? (obviously the last isn't my favorite alternative)

TIA!

I think the bottom line is:

Whether or not you thinks laws are good or not, or protect people or
not, or are in favor of anarchy or not, laws do exist, usually for a
purpose.

If you feel it's ok to share YOUR wireless connection with someone
else, that's your choice.

If you feel it;s NOT ok to share said connection, that's your choice
and others should respect that.

Should they not accept it to the point of threats (and that's what
next-door-neighbor is doing) then the cops should be called.
Immediately.

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

2006-01-14 Thread Howard Katz
There's a difference between sitting outside a public library that
offers free internet (with the permission and understanding of their
service provider) and sitting outside someone's home and accessing a
wifi signal that wasn't locked down. To say there isn't, or that just
because it's there and you can use it, is just rationalization of
theft. If the laws change to allow that, fine, but 1) the laws aren't
written that way, and 2) with the vested interests that the service
providers have in selling service, they probably won't be.

Have I done some signal sniffing? Sure, I'll bet we all have, just to
see if we could do it. Did I continue to do so? Nope--in fact I
tracked down the person who had the open signal in my area and advised
them to encrypt their signal. At that point it's their
responsibility.l

My Airport widget tells me there's 2 WEP signals nearby--at least
these folk know how to turn their security settings on. :)

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

2006-01-13 Thread Howard Katz
Since she didn't take no for an answer, you might want to first
contact your local Attorney General's office, and see what could be
done. I suspect that both your police dept. and internet provider
would be interested in this too--since "brother" probably has done
this for others.

If it's feasible, you might also either go with a wired router, or
just turn your wifi base station off when not in use--that would deter
her from breaking into your signal and stealing service.

The evolution of a computer or processor is going to continue. The
thing to remember is that no computer is obsolete as long as it does
what YOU want it to do.

Myself, I'd rather use an Apple product, regardless of any personal
view of specific personnel there, than the wintel boxes I have to use
at work. And I'm happy with my 520c, 5300, and AL G4--as well as my
//e--they have function and usability for me. Will I get a new
machine in the future? Probably. Doesn't mean I wish Apple ill for
doing what they have to--expanding their line and their customer base.

Re: 10.4.4 and update for ... PB's ?

2006-01-11 Thread Howard Katz
Has anyone tried RealPlayer (version 10.0.0 (331)) with 10.4.4? I
updated OS X this afternoon, and I can't get RP to work with the
"radio stations" I've been listening to for months using 10.4.2 and
.4.3--it starts to open them and then just hangs there. I deleted the
preferences file, and still no luck.

I CAN listen to the same stations using Windows Media Player--but I
hate having to use Windows-anything unless I have to. RealPlayer
tells me I have the most current version, too.

This obviously isn't an earth-shattering problem, but I just hate it
when something that used to work, stops. :)

I'm not disagreeing with you, but had to ask. This list does focus on
the G3/G4 series of 'book, regardless of the OS. There's a separate
list tho, for the older powerbooks-- 040 and up---different

Re: HOWTO Boot Powerbook from Firewire drive

FTP client

2005-12-28 Thread Howard Katz
A while back I asked about different ftp clients I could use with my
'book. I tried out a few suggestions, but couldn't find one I really
liked - matter of fact, I used the unix ftp command from terminal more
often than not.

I recently came across a FireFox extension called FireFTP that I gave
a try. It's accessed under the Tools menu, and gives you a
drag-and-click way of doing file transfers. My only complaint is that
you have to set up your account info with your password ahead of
time--minor consideration for most people (I prefer to input that when
accessing my ISP's home account area each time--a bit more secure that
way). The program's donationware, with the funds going to orphanages
in e.europe. You can download it from http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

So far it's doing what I've wanted to do all this time with ftp'ing
files--you might want to take a look at it if you've been looking for
a good ftp client.

Re: Transfer to new Powerbook and more

2005-12-23 Thread Howard Katz
FYI, I picked up today a copy of the UK edition of MacWorld at my
local bookstore. There's an article in there about how they've
discovered that not all firewire drives can be used as boot
devices--seems they've discovered a few, the Kanguru 80gig
Quicksilver and an 80 gig DiskGo! for example, all failed the
bootup-by-firewire test. And this was confirmed by the drive
manufacturers, too. Seems that not all the bridge chips that the
enclosures use are capable of doing bootup--the DiskGoQ! tech said
that their newer drives over 400gig could, since they used a newer
bridge chip. So it pays to ask about boot ability when buying your
drive. (this was in the UK MacWorld Expo Issue pg 195, btw)

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

Another way to help keep your laptop screen clean is to get some of
those clear plastic screen overlay sheets. Macally sells some
(http://www.macally.com/spec/specialties/accessories/screenprotector.html)
and I've got one on my 15" AL right now.

They may not be as cheap as the Kleer Screen wipes, but they do offer
a layer of buffer protection against dirt, and also against keyboard
imprint too.

Re: Reminder about static electricity

2005-12-17 Thread Howard Katz
Just an FYI--

I finally sat down with a borrowed multimeter and tested the ground
path from the three-prong plug on the long cord that comes with the
Apple power supply.

There's no ground path from the power plug (ring, tip, or outer
circle) to the grounding path. So it's still problematic what happens
with any static charge when you touch the metal casing of a Ti or AL
unit.

There's a really good gmail widget I use on my PB too under tiger
(see? That's keeping it on the list's discussion protocol. :))
Forget the name off the top of my head (on a different machine at the
moment)--looks like a british postal stamp, actually tells you how
many emails you have waiting for you, and signs you on to your
account.

Gmail is almost as good as Toast--the bread kind. :)

Re: THANK YOU ALL! - Re: G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread Howard Katz
Not that it would help Gail's situation, but I'm curious: Could a mac
without an OS on it's hard drive be started up in target mode? And if
it could, would doing a "full backup" with a program like SuperDuper
be able to put a working OS, as well as other files, on the one with
the blank drive, from a working Mac?

Re: Reminder about static electricity

2005-12-07 Thread Howard Katz
Well, it got me.

Came into the office, forgot to touch the closest piece of metal
(shelf bracket), and touched the case. ZAP! Computer froze.

Restarted--and it did restart, but interestingly, it seems to have
forgotten a few settings--immediately noticed that preferred browser
defaulted to Safari instead of the firefox setting I had.

I don't know what else got munged, but I'm sure I'll find out. All my
applications, music, etc. seem to be working correctly.

Ture, but the rest of the case doesn't seem any warmer with or without the cover.

I was referring to using it without the cover too--so I don't think
it's stopping that much heat from being retained.

Empirical evidence only from my own experience of course, but so far I
haven't had any problem with that. Keys stay as cool to the touch as
they were before I used the protector. The only caveat in using this
is that it took a couple of days getting used to the feel of the

Re: Real computers

2005-12-07 Thread Howard Katz
If we're sharing stories, :)

I'm still a proud owner and user of an Apple //e (8-bit computer for
those of you who came into the Apple crowd after the Mac was
introduced.)

I obtained a Panasonic laser printer that's HPII compatible (and yes
it too is still in use.) I had reason to print out boldface italic on
the printer, and regardless of how I configured AppleWorks (the "real"
one, not the ClarisWorks renaming - am I showing a slight bias here?
:) ), I couldn't get the laserprinter to print out this combo. I
thought this was strange since I could do it on my dot-matrix printer.

So I called Panasonic's tech support, and got a gent who first
couldn't believe that I was using their products with anything Apple.
Then he asked which machine. "Nope, totally incompatible." Then he
asked what program. "Nope--simply won't work." I asked him to please
contact the instructor for the class I was taking when I was working
on a Master's degree and request that the Instructor return that
12-page paper I had turned in the day before, because "obviously" I
could never have printed it out using the setup I was calling about.
Stunned silence. He then asked if I could by chance send a hex dump of
a text page. Which I could and did.

It took my conversation to break him out of his peecee-only mode and
realize that the printer didn't care where it got the proper esc-codes
and ascii info from, as long as it was in the proper format. And like
I said that computer/printer combo still works fine even now.

Oh--and the bold italics? Turns out that that combo was the only one
the programmers left out of that printer's ROM and that unlike a DM
printer, codes aren't additive, so no bold italic in native print
mode. Oh well. :)

Re: Cleaning keyboards.

Of course, crud can only get in your keyboard (say that fast 5 times)
if it has access. Why not get a "keyboard condom" for your 'book?
I've used one on mine form months and it does a good job of keeping it
clean--fits well, and helps protect the screen from impress problems.
There's several on eBay right now for a decent price. (I got mine a
bit cheaper, but I can't find a current listing for it. This one's not
bad tho.)

Do a search for either Ice 12" 15" & 17" Powerbook G4 XPB Keyboard
Protector or Item number: 5837041131 for one example.

THe other thing that could be done with a tech person who says "you
need to use a real computer" is to immediately ask to speak to their

the individual is poor customer service? It's amazing how things can
change in tone when you do that, and also maybe request the name and

I've come across several websites, including one for one of my jobs
where we report daily activity, that Safari wouldn't work with--kept
getting a system error when trying to log on. I switched over to
FireFox--and haven't had a problem since.

I now do all my browsing with either FireFox or iCab. If I didn't
need Safari to be on the 'book for some internet settings (I found out
from this list--you have to set your default browser, even if it isn't
Safari, IN safari. Go figure.), I'd probably nuke it from my system.
It just doesn't seem to be as compatible as you'd think it'd be.

Very true. But I was involved with the setup (on a minimal basis)
with the new facility - less than a year old - so I know how the

Nope--it was multiple locations throughout the campus. I took the PB
and tried it out on the chance it was just the node I was trying to
hook into. And the student who was having trouble was several floors
and server rooms away from where I originally was.

They've pretty much admitted it was their fault, but as of yesterday
at least, it was fixed. :)

(These are the same IT people who when they came in, to a Univ. that
caters to teacher education, tried to tell us we didn't need Macs and
they weren't planning on supporting them. They were told "oh yes you

It's a way to share info between two devices using infrared as the
carrier--think about a universal TV remote control-pulses of infrared
to send signals to do different things. You can use the IR function
to share files between compatible computer types too--I once installed
MS Office from one of my PB 5300's to another via IR just to see how
it would work. The two machines had to be literally inches apart for
anything to happen, and the file copying took well over an hour--not a
fast process, but if someone had no cabling available to them, it was
doable. (I'd never do it again myself, tho. :) )

But the fact that tiger, even the latest update, was problem-free

was only MS-compliant for their own OS. Like I said, I've had no
problem for almost 4 months, and there's no problem right now at

Amazing what can happen when your IT finally gives you additional info.

Spent close to an hour at various times with the IT helpdesk last
nite. One "nice gentleman" (Better that euphemism than something else
I could say--and besides, someone from there could be on this list.

said "Oh, we don't support 10.4 Mac OS--only the earlier versions." I
let them know that it's been working flawlessly since July when I got

Then the shoe drops. The tech mentions that, and I'm going to use
caps here, so be prepared for a little shouting--INSTALLED A NEW
MICROSOFT SERVER UPDATE PACKAGE TO ALL THE CAMPUS SERVERS YESTERDAY!!

Gee, you think, especially since another Mac user there, running
Tiger, couldn't connect, it could have something to do with MS's
(lousy) software? He admitted that it could be the case, and put in a
work ticket--to one of my co-workers. (I've advised him of the
situation in a separate email). Just for grins, I also booted up one
of the school's eMacs running Panther (or earlier--I forget the
version #, but I know it's not Tiger)--disconnected the ethernet
cable, set it to run via the airport card--no problem, it worked.

So the question is why won't Tiger connect? Not really my problem
now--it's the IT dept. And there's enough Tiger users wandering
around that they'll need to fix this fast.

Oh, and for information's sake--I'm sitting at a Panera's cafe using
their free wifi. Other than having a slight problem negotiating their
sign-in system this morning (more their system than mine!), it's
obviously working ok.

Why is it we tend to, when it comes to computers, to think it's our
system that's the problem, and not something on the other end, but
when it comes to things political or social issues, it's always the
other guy's fault? :)

Thanks again for all the help, input and insight, folks!!

Later...Howard (a relieved PB user!)

10.4.3 is what I'm currently using. It sounds like IT doesn't want to
deal with anything newer than 10.3. However this Univ deals primarily
with teacher education. you'd better believe that there's a fair
number of PB's being using around here! IT knows it has to support
Tiger. (I hate to think what'll happen when the next
version--Leopard?--appears)

FWIW, it was a Panera's that I was at earlier too. I'll try it out
there tomorrow, as well as the public library's free wifi - hopefully
all will be well. And should I hear something about what the IT folk
do or change, I'll pass it on.

Brian--that sparked something. I called our HelpDesk people back. I
actually got someone who said "We don't support Mac OSX except for
10.3 and earlier. His coworker thought this was an odd statement, but
let it go. Seems that they applied a microsoft update sometime today
to the server software--he thinks it broke something Mac related--to
test it, I found a student with an iBook, who also was running it
turns out--Tiger. She couldn't connect either. I've a feeling the
problem isn't mine, but the IT folk who aren't big mac fans. I'll
test it out tomorrow at the wifi cafe and give a report back.

Thanks!

No go--now even putting in DHCP manually doesn't seem to work--and the

Oh--and question--what would macstumbler give me that I'm not seeing
with airtraffic control? I was able to see the network, the channel,
strength, and choose which channel to connect to.

Re: Wireless network problem - help!

2005-11-09 Thread Howard Katz
Yup--a DHCP problem--I'm on now wireless, but I had to choose an
arbitrary IP number based on what I was getting from the plug-in
ethernet info. It won't get one for me when I renew or try automatic
DHCP when I'm airport connected. It just won't do it automatically.

Is there a preference I should trash, maybe? I CAN connect--at least
here, but it's going to be problematic at some of the free wifi
sites--they don't usually have ethernet ports to plug into. :)

Wireless network problem - help!

2005-11-09 Thread Howard Katz
One of my part-time jobs is working at a local university--I'm there now.

I've used the wireless capabilities of my G4 15" AL unit for months
here with no problems. Univ. network is open, unprotected. I was
sitting at my desk today using the wirelss connection, via automatic
airport setting when all of a sudden it stopped working. I've tried
two different browsers (icab, firefox), a telnet client, as well as
launching a few internet-connected widget to see if anything would
take care of the problem. Even removed the battery for 10 min on the
off-chance that would work. It didn't, and neither have multiple
restarts and shutdowns.

Airport's icon in the menu bar shows a strong signal.
AirTrafficControl widget shows network(s), and strength. However,
nothing I try will get anything to connect thru the wireless. (A
co-worker's peecee is working fine wireless.) It does however, work
fine when I plug directly into an ethernet jack, like right now.

It was working earlier today when I stopped for coffee at an place
that offers free wifi, and like I said, it was working here for maybe
an hour and then just stopped.

I ran the netowrk status diagnostics, and it fails on ISP and server.
It does see the network, and I've got a good strong, all-bars signal
showing.

IT isn't too mac savvy here, so I'm basically on my own.

Any suggestions or help?

Recommended external DVD burner?

2005-11-07 Thread Howard Katz
Since my PB only has a Combo drive in it, I've been playing with the
idea of getting an external DVD writer, firewire of course. I know I
could upgrade the internal drive, but an external unit could be shared
with my roommate for use on his peecee. I'm interested in knowing
what others are using and recommendations of drives to look into, or
avoid.

Thanks!

Re: Clean Powerbook exterior?

2005-10-31 Thread Howard Katz
Something else that helps keep the exterior of your 'book clean: take
an old tshirt, and cut out the back from the rest of the shirt. (or
smaller size, depending on the shirt, I suppose. :) ) Wrap the PB in
the cloth when the machine's not in use--say in a carrying bag. Keeps
it clean, the cloth can be used for dusting/polishing, and helps
protect from items scratching it, too.
