space. The 15 isn't that bad, but it still can't touch the 12 for
portability and light weight. Of course, the 12 is such a delight to type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose.

I have the 15 and even if the person in front of me reclines, I can still
usually use it but just have to pull it forward somewhat.

I disagree with the portability - true it is heavier and slightly bigger but
it's still not a big deal to carry it around. The tiny 12 screen is just
too small for me to be practical for any of my uses - including Photoshop
and Illustrator. My friend has a 12 and I can't stand typing on it - the
screen is just too small and I am used to the extra space in front of the
keyboard on my 15. However, I do also use my PB as my primary computer. If
it was a secondary computer, I might have gone with the 12.

I dimly recall that there's an issue concerning the ratio of the cpu and

If true, the effect of a slightly increased cpu *with a related* increase

My 12 Powerbook 1GHz has 2 2/3 the storage and more speed

What I'm waiting for is wearables to happen with floating 20 images in
glasses.
We've all been there with the Virtual Reality Craze of last decade... I
still remember 16-page booklets containing just disclaimers of how
these kind of glasses can damage your eyes/make you vomit/turn you into
a serial killer, etc. Based on (commercial) state of the art I've seen
last year, I'm not sure if the technology is gonna be ready any time
soon.

I suppose key chords is the only way to go to make that work.
Not sure what you mean here, but it's very interesting for me (I'm an
interaction designer). I presume you could still use voice commands (as
ready for prime time as those goggles, I guess),
mice/trackballs/trackpads shouldn't be a problem, and even keyboards
for those gifted with touch typists skills?

Maybe wearables never will compete with portables, just open up new
avenues of usage. They really should be around the corner technically,
but there most likely will be yet some time for any siginificant market
demand.
Not sure about the around the corner bit, although who knows what
they're cooking in the research labs at this moment. But the whole idea
of Augmented Realities is indeed too good not to be expected with held
breath.

A post about Macintosh SE on the G-Books List? You may wish to try

I have a 17, drag it to a couple meetings a month plus to every room

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
How could a one inch slab of plastic alongside the keys be useful. My Pismo
and 12 PowerBook have the same keybaord size, and the only ergonomic
advantages to the Pismo are that the screen is higher and the text is
larger. For touch typing, the 12 PowerBook is actually a far more
comfortable machine to type on because its keys have much better action.

Hands never rest on the 3/4 strip of plastic on the sides of the keyboard,
and that space has no ergonomic benefit. The deeper palmrest may have some
benefit, but the difference is very minor.

The only reason the 14 iBook and larger PowerBooks have space alongside
their keyboards is because those large screens are much wider than the
standard Apple laptop keyboards. Now if Apple used that space by fitting
larger keys, or on the 17 PowerBook by including a full numeric keypad,
that would be an ergonomic improvement.

Andrew

That space has no ergonomic benefit indeed, but the corresponding space
on the palmrest has. When you type, you shouldn't have your arms
perpendicular to the space bar, but at a certain, comfortable angle. If
your palmrest is not wide enough, this forces your arms to use a
different angle (people tend to do that subconsciously), which
translates to more chances of RSI in longer run.

Now, I don't say that it's exactly the case with 12 vs. 14 iBook, but
I presume it's the same situation with 12 vs. 15 PowerBook. I have a
PowerBook 15 which is great, and I tried 12 once, but it was just
much less comfortable, for the reason I outlined above.

The only reason the 14 iBook and larger PowerBooks have space
alongside
their keyboards is because those large screens are much wider than the
standard Apple laptop keyboards. Now if Apple used that space by
fitting
larger keys, or on the 17 PowerBook by including a full numeric
keypad,
that would be an ergonomic improvement.
I seriously disagree here. As far as I see, the keys on Apple's laptops
are roughly the same size as standalone keyboards, and I see nothing
but trouble with bigger keys.

With full numeric keyboard, you'd have to have your hands moved to the
left most of the time (for the alphanumerical part), which is just bad
for your posture, would probably necessitate moving trackpad to the
left as well (bad aesthetics), and your left palmrest would be too
narrow, as I mentioned above already.

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
The 15 and 17 PowerBooks are much wider machines than the 12, but the 14
iBook and older 14 PowerBooks are not wide enough to get any benefit. Of
course, to be wide enough to give some benefit (15 and 17 PB) makes the
machine too wide to be used well as a portable, making it really a portable
desktop.

Personally, I bought my 12 to use as a true portable, a decision I have
never regretted, especially when I see people trying to use bigger laptops
such as Titanium PowerBooks in crowded airplanes. I actually saw some poor
idiot's 17 PowreBook get pushed by a passing flight attendant, the result
was a spilled drink on another passenger, the flight attendant visibly in
pain and the PowerBook face down on the floor with a sickening crunch,
followed by a whole lot of shouting by the fool who tried to use a massive
shelf of a computer in a confined space.

The 12, in contrast, is so small that even if the passenger in front of me
reclines, I won't have my screen crunched. That, and of course I still have
room on my tray table, as opposed to bleeding over into another person's
space. The 15 isn't that bad, but it still can't touch the 12 for
portability and light weight. Of course, the 12 is such a delight to type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose.

Speaking of RSI, by the way, your hands shouldn't be touching the palmrest
AT ALL, making a wider one of dubious benefit. The only time I can see a
benefit of a large palmrest area is for sliding around a small optical mouse
or as a surface to write rest your post-it pad on for writing real
pen-and-paper notes. The 12, by the way, has a very generous palmrest and
is an ergonomic delight, as far as laptops go with their low screens that
force bent necks.

Well, speaking of RSI, you shouldn't be typing at all, especially on a
notebook. :) I have yet to see anyone who actually types WITHOUT their
palms touching the palmrest, by the way.

But to each their own, I guess, and seeing that this thread has once
again moved to focus on the size of the whole unit, as opposed to
keyboards and palmrests, I don't think there's any point to rehash it
once again. Over and out.

Not true - I looked as I was reading your post, and that's EXACTLY
where my hands were - the weight on the outsides of the palms along
the pinky fingers, poised to move wherever on the keyboard I might
wish. Very comfortable. (For me, of course, it's 2 on each side,

Actually, my pinkies was running up alongside the keyboard (esp. the
right one, supporting the ring or middle finger poised over the delete
key).

Don't know how I'd be without that space, but I clearly use it quite a
lot (now that I'm watching where my hands sit).

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Brian Rule
I've used laptops larger an more bulky than my 14 on airplanes with no
issues, although, airplane use doesn't matter much to me since I don't
really travel like that these days. My 14, like i've said, goes
nearly everywhere with me, and with no effort. I often hear people
complain about how difficult it is to move and travel with such big
and bulky computers. My experience has been that such people are
either too lazy or too out of shape to realize how light and compact
these laptops really are.
I've tried smaller laptops, sure. Wanna know how I use that extra
space on either side of the computer? To keep the thing on my lap. A
12 laptop slips around and is unstable in my lap unless i hunch myself
in as though I were typing on some playing card. Using a 12 LAPTOP on
my LAP is very uncomfortable. As for weight, one extra pound really
isn't that much. Sure I COULD find a smaller laptop, but to be honest,
I only have one bag in which my laptop does not fit well, and that's
because it's the smallest gym bag I could find.
The extra palm space does indeed come in handy, since I do use it to
rest my palms often, whether it's proper typing or not. And, as
surmised, it does come in handy for writing a note or post it.

Nope. All Apple laptop repair that is *in* warranty has to be done at one
of 2 service centers. Dallas and Memphis. Memphis handles iBooks and
older. Dallas handles Powerbooks. They can add RAM etc, but a Hard Drive
will void your warranty. I used to manage a tech shop (just 8 months ago)
and I am an Apple Certified Desktop and Portable technician. You can't
even go into GSX (apple's online suite of ordering software and warranty
history etc...) and order the parts. It errors out with a this part is for
depot repair only please call blah blah blah... If someone tosses in a HD
from an over the counter source like CompUSA then your warranty is now void.
Apple Depot technicians are trained to look to see if you have been messing
around inside your laptop or not when they start the repair at the depot. I
have toured both facilities (as well as the parts facility in Elk Grove Ca.)
and they have a system set up. The figure they gave us was that 20% of all
incoming laptops were not repaired due to customer negligence or abuse.

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
12 PowerBook fits great on my lap. By the way, I am neither lazy nor out
of shape, and the extra pound or more of a large laptop DOES make a
difference when carried all day. My 12 PB weighs a bit under 2lbs less
than my Pismo, and for carrying around town as I go from place to place, in
and out of the car, or across an airport, it makes a real difference. Of
course, the bag for the 12 itself is much lighter than the bag for the 14,
despite both being Brenthavens with similar construction and materials.
With the 12 I tend to travel light, bringing only a lightweight universal
power supply (AC/Auto/Air) and as little else as possible, kind of forced by
the small bag. With the larger bag there is a tendency to throw more stuff
into it, stuff that gets heavy and can usually be done without anyway, like
portable printers, scanners, drives and the like. With the 12, I just
throw a few DVDs into clear plastic CD sleeves (cases are bulky) and any
papers (or pages copied from books) that I may need into the case and that
is it for my computer case.

I used to carry a 7lb monster and it is so liberating to carry a 4.6 pound
lightweight in its place.

I've used laptops larger an more bulky than my 14 on airplanes with no

really travel like that these days.

The 12, in contrast, is so small that even if the passenger in front

 still have
room on my tray table, as opposed to bleeding over into another

portability and light weight. Of course, the 12 is such a delight to
 type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose.

Speaking of RSI, by the way, your hands shouldn't be touching the
 palmrest
AT ALL, making a wider one of dubious benefit. The only time I can
 see a
benefit of a large palmrest area is for sliding around a small optical
 mouse
or as a surface to write rest your post-it pad on for writing real
pen-and-paper notes. The 12, by the way, has a very generous
 palmrest and
is an ergonomic delight, as far as laptops go with their low screens
 that
 force bent necks.

That space has no ergonomic benefit indeed, but the corresponding
 space
on the palmrest has. When you type, you shouldn't have your arms
perpendicular to the space bar, but at a certain, comfortable angle.
 If
your palmrest is not wide enough, this forces your arms to use a
different angle (people tend to do that subconsciously), which
 translates to more chances

Yes, Di-No in Pasadena wanted $80 for the job and are fully Apple
authorized. I used to be a tech support trainer (in the PowerBook 5300

As a guy with lots of experience inside modern laptops, the 12 PB was still
VERY difficult to take apart and reassemble, so next time I'll just spend
the $80 at Di-No, as I would have had I still been in warranty.

The flip-up screen on the Pismo is wonderful for tinkering, but the rigid
mount keyboard on the aluminum books are just delightful. I don't get why
the 12 and even 14 iBooks are so difficult to swap hard drives on though,
as they have flip-up KBs like the Pismo and Lombard, I call that poor design
on the newer models.

I had an IBM X21 that only required 1 screw to access the hard drive, which
slid right out of the side of the computer. This easy access was in a
computer considerably smaller and lighter than my 12 PB, and what I
consider terrific industrial design.

PowerBook on the rest of the tray. By the way, I didn't call 17 owners
idiots, only one particular guy I saw who made a real mess out of a 2-hour

graphic design or audio work, or almost anything else where lots of screen
real estate is needed in a transportable computer, which is what the 17 PB
is, a transportable, rather than a portable.

What I'm waiting for is wearables to happen with floating 20 images in

Maybe wearables never will compete with portables, just open up new

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2004-12-31 Thread Zoltan Batiz
An interesting thread, so I thought I'd chime in. My Pismo is my main
computer. . .period. I use it at home docked on it's multiple fan
cooling station, elevated for my ergonomic needs, which of course is
connected to my Firewire and USB devices. Oh and on the subject of
screen real estate? At home my Pismo is always connected to my 17
Apple Studio Display. . .PLENTY of real estate to do my work. For
those rare occasions when I have to go out to see clients, I grab my
laptop bag, which can neatly house my Pismo, flat bed scanner, CD/RW,
Zip Drive, and two extra batteries. The bag isn't even too big either.
. .but probably weighs as much as the average American, but hey I LOVE
to see my clients reactions as I bust out an entire office on the
table; of which everything mentioned is powered from my Pismo via the
Firewire and USB ports.

By the way folks, this brings me to the TWO REASONS I will have a very
hard time ever parting from my Pismo. Besides two batteries, the hot
swappable expansion bays are key elements for my needs, that always pop
up when least expected. So, if Apple somehow figures out how to make a
PowerBook G5 with those two main elements, I'll be the first in line.
And yea, it's gonna have to be a G5 to get me away from my Pismo.

Probably a third reason is due to the advent of wireless technologies.
Wireless, as we all know, has put an enormous jump on laptops in
general through sales and overall demand. Of course my two bedroom
condo is wireless and yes, I'm technosexual as was described the
other day on the news. . .I have the occasional geek parties with as
much as 12 to 14 people all wirelessly connected to my network via
their laptops, PB's and iBooks, surfing and downloading. I've got a
shared T1, so I might as well be generous with the bandwidth when I'm
not using it right?

Anyway, as a former desktop user who had a computer it seems that was
the size of my room with SCSI this and SCSI that just four short years
ago, the Pismo has made me a true believer in laptop technology and I
will never go back to a tower at home. NEVA! LOL.

Anyway, happy new year everyone. . .no more shots for me.

I know that if Apple ever came out with an updated PowerBook 2400c I'd
rush

slower
chip would not bother me in the interest of reducing power comsuption

even better if they could reduce the size of the surrounding bezel.
Finally, leave the optical drive OUT OF THE CHASIS and make the whole

The thing to keep in mind with the iBook is that the 12 and 14 LCDs have
the same resolution. The result is that the 14 model is easier on 'old'

goes in my purse. Of course, HALF of it sticks out of the top and
causes my purse to fall over, and I don't want it on the floor, either.
So, I end up holding it the whole time. All that to say that I'm
wondering if I might have been happier with the 15 PowerBook. I've

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2004-12-30 Thread Andrew F.
Your iBook, the 14 and the Wallstreet all have the exact same amount of
real estate (resolution), its just the size of the dots that is different,
rather than the number of them.

Yes, the 14 screen on my Pismo is more pleasant to look at (from a
distance) than that of my 12 PowerBook, but the 12 is much sharper and
produces a technically better picture, just smaller.

I use the Pismo essentially as an easy chair computer, as opposed to the
small 12 which is a true portable. Yes the Pismo will run almost 10 hours
on its two batteries, but its just so darn big and heavy that it stays home.

That's just me though, and now I have the best of both worlds, the 12 to go
and the 14 for home use. If I had to choose only one computer though, it'd
still be the 12. Actually, I'd take any active matrix PowerBook from the
5300c onward over any desktop if I was limited to just one computer.

Less is more or Bigger is better

2004-12-29 Thread Andrew F.
I¹ve been on this list for about a year now (since I switched back from 6
years of Wintel and bought my 12² G4) and in that time have always wondered
what was up with everyone who is so into their Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo
PowerBooks. Now I¹m still a big fan of the ³less is more² approach to
laptops, but I must admit that I¹m starting to see the appeal in the larger
books.

It started a about 6-weeks-ago when on a whim I bought a Lombard off eBay to
satisfy my daughter¹s desire for a laptop of her own. Well I configured the
333MHz machine with OSX Panther and OS9 and found that it was quite an
enjoyable machine to work on. Much slower than the G4 and rather unstable,
but still enjoyable. I traced the stability problems to the upper 256MB ram
module and sent it back to OWC last week, with the replacement due any day
now. Running on only the lower 256MB module the Lombard is rock solid, and
unless I launch more than three or four programs it remains fast enough for
general office-type work.

This is where things got a bit strange. I am currently studying for the
California bar exam and keep my study folder with all of my outlines and
what not on our desktop PowerMac G4 (400MHz Sawtooth, also running Panther
rather well), which is nice because I like to write and study from my living
room recliner, and when the batteries on my 12² G4 run down, rather than
plugging it in, I just save my work and resume where I left off on the
Lombard. My wife saw this a few times and then looked over my shoulder and
noticed the large text and overall clarity of the Lombard display, and
proclaimed that as soon as I finish the exam, the Lombard is hers.

Okay, so back to eBay I go to find another computer for my daughter. I
watched both the ending soon and newly listed views for G3 PowerBooks and
came upon a loaded 400MHz Pismo, which is now sitting on my lap as I write
on its like-new bronze keyboard. About an hour after buying the Pismo on
eBay, I saw a listing on the LEM Swap list for a Kanga at $150 shipped, so
more out of curiosity than anything I bought that too, thinking if either
the Pismo or the Kanga arrive in clean cosmetic condition I will make that
my daughter¹s machine (she is 10 and will use mostly edutainment software in
OS9) and keep the ugly one for myself. What is really amazing is that I got
all three computers, a pair of old Orinoco pc cards for the Lombard and
Kanga (the Pismo already had an AirPort card) and a total of three working
AC adapters (all compatible with all three computers) and four excellent
batteries (1 Kanga, 3 Lombard/Pismo) for less than the cheapest new iBook
over at my local Apple Store.

The Lombard is the only one that shows any signs of wear, though because its
CD ROM drive and keyboard are a bit quieter than the DVD and keyboard of the
Pismo, it is still my wife¹s choice of computer. The Pismo is a nice backup
to my G4, and for long hours studying, is actually a far better computer
than the newer aluminum machine. With the two best batteries installed I
get a whopping 7 hours runtime (the other good battery can hot-swap in for
an additional 2:45) and that 14² TFT is much easier on the eyes for long
sessions than the 12² panel on my G4.

There is also something just friendlier about the black PowerBooks with
their bronze keyboards, and of course the ergonomics are far superior.
About the only downside compared to the G4 is that the keyboard isn¹t as
crisp, though its much better than I thought it would be. Actually even the
old Kanga is a delight. Running OS8.6 (until I get more ram for OS9) is
extremely fast, and that is with the paltry 32MB of ram that it came with.
9.1 should fly after I add 64 or 128MB of ram, and who knows, maybe I¹ll
give XPostFacto a try (if I get the 128MB module) and try to run Panther on
it.

So, I guess what I¹m trying to say is that while I won¹t be taking this
like-new Pismo with me when I fly, I can see myself really putting a lot of
mileage on its keyboard in the years to come. These older PowerBooks really
are great examples of superior design, and I can see why you guys like them
so much. How much was that G4 upgrade again?
