PowerBook Parts http://www.pbparts.com/ does that. They replace the
pot
metal with stainless steel hinges. However, even though I bought stuff

them, I must disclosed that I've never purchased that specific service.

I had them replace the hinges on my Wallstreet.
I was completely satisfied.
The hinge replacement cost about what the hinges alone would cost from

Airport Question (again)

2006-02-08 Thread Amanda Ward

Hi Y'all...

I have an Airport problem.

Recently, I put an original Airport card in my iBook (G3/500 - Dual
USB). Worked fine under Panther and after upgrading to Tiger, it
still performed flawlessly. This afternoon, I reset the Power manager
in an attempt to squeeze a bit more life out of an old battery. That
failed and when I rebooted the computer, I had no internet connection.
According to MacStumbler, I have a good connection to the wireless
router (and a few others) but any attempt to access a web page fails
with the message I'm not connected to the internet.

I'm pretty lost here. Any suggestions on where to start?

Thanks,

Amanda

Yes, it does need to be a ATA-5 drive. I've tried a several newer ATA6

Hello illustrious comrades,

I just swapped a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-815A superdrive into my Pismo

question is this: Is there any way to turn the unit into a multi-region

To turn a DVD player into a multi-region player, you need to apply a
non-official, hacked firmware that removes the limitation of that stupid
region check. There are some risks associated with this but everytime I did
it, it went fine.

Now, you would need to find if somebody came out with a firmware for your
specific model. Do a Google search on matshita firmware and you should get
a few hits.

HD warranty question

2006-01-10 Thread Frank P. Eigler
I've had TechTool running for ~ 10 hours and it's showing 601 bad blocks
(block 359040 of 156301488) so far.

The data's completely corrupt and seemingly unsalvageable. Disk
First Aid, TechTool, DiskWarrior and Drive Genius all give up on it.

Is this a warranty issue (HD purchased w/laptop 7 months ago) or is a
thorough reformat and reinstall going to get me back up and running.

The local tech told me that If I have to order a part, it's under
warranty. If not, you eat the cost

Thanks

You may have to plug it into an x86 laptop or find an adapter for a PC, but
if you low level format it with a tool from the manufacturer's website it
may fix the issues. If it is a mechanical issue though it will not.
Regardless you should get it replaced if it is under warranty.

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-25 Thread Tim Collier
The truly amazing thing is the actual stupidity you come across in
this PC dominated world when it comes to Mac Networking. Back when I
used PC's I used a wired network and I was really new to networking
back then. I even took a course on it at a local community college.
With that under my belt and a couple of texts to refer to, I went at
it. I bought my routers and all of my cat 5 cables and then the PC's
still wouldn't cooperate. One would see some but others wouldn't
see others. It took me weeks to finally get it to where I finally
have everybody able to share files and printers. When I was able to
afford a Windows NT server, that helped quite a bit.
Then I made the switch in 2001 and started going over to wireless,
obvious choice was wireless and networking has never been so easy.
Using only Apple hardware probably has made it a lot easier on me
than using 2nd and 3rd party equipment. Everything works right out
of the box and works with little to no configuration. As far as
wireless networking, Apple the top of the line. I would not consider
using anything else.

setting up a wireless network between a PC and a Mac. They didn't know,
so they called over a higher up, who told me it could not be done.
I got a Linksys WRT54G (not from Staples), installed an Airport extreme
card, called Linksys tech support and very soon after, Voilà, the
impossible was actually quite easy, even for a tech-impaired person
like me.

I suspect they are just catering to the rubes that need a little

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-23 Thread Caleb Cupples
I do agree with you, there. I know that I use Linux and OS X for most
of what I do, but it's really a pain to have to jump through hoops to
configure a router. Now, I agree with your condescending outlook on
such things, but there are some things that I'd like to be able to see
a picture of my OS on the box, so I know it works. I have an old HP
Scanjet that refuses to work under any Mac OS. Of course, I knew that,
simply because it's my grandpa's old scanner that he replaced when it
wouldn't work on his new mini. Mice and keyboards are totally different
from a wireless card or a router, as far as I'm concerned. Personally,
I tend to look at the table of compatibility on the box, as it's
usually more accurate than the pictures... For the record, I do have a
Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse with the ugly little Windows logo
on the keyboard where the option key should be...

Caleb

P.S. Don't take this seriously and please don't take offense, but you
might like to try putting the router in the freezer. That'll cool it
down... :)

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-23 Thread Tim Collier
Plain simple truth of the matter is that Apple designed their Airport
base stations and the Airport Express to work with your Mac. The
Airport Setup software is designed to set it up in just a few simple
steps that rarely even require referring to the enclosed
documentation. Whether you use an original Airport Card or an
Airport Extreme or for that matter a third party card, setup is a
truly simple thing to do. I do not have any experience with Linksys
or D-Link but I did make the mistake of buying a Netgear as my first
attempt at wireless networking.
I had all of my Macs equipped with Airport Extreme cards and one with
an original card. I took the Netgear wireless router out of the box
and read through the manual and everything seemed straight forward.
I got the first Mac connected but that's as far as I got. None of
the others would connect. Of course the Netgear instructions assumed
that I had PC's but it should still work the same as for the first
Macbut no.
I called customer support and got a very unhelpful person at the
other end who told me that you shouldn't be using this with a Mac in
the first place. After several attempts and failures, I said thank
you and hung up. I packed everything up and returned the router to
CompUSA where I bought it. I went over and got the Airport base
station that I should have gotten, brought it home and set it up
myself. All done in about 15 minutes without having to call anybody.
I've extended the reach of my signal (didn't really have to, but it
made me feel better) by buying 2 Airport Express and distributing
them around the other end of the house. Adding them to the network
was also simple and I didn't need to call any tech support line.
And, my network isn't a straight-forward Mac setup either, I'll
describe below (sorry for the length of this post, but I want to make
my point):
Cable modem to Airport Basestation Konica-Minolta Laser Network
Printer connected to base station
Mac #1	G5 Dual 2 gig with Airport Extreme Card--Location Office with
the basestation
Mac #2	G4 Dual 1 gig with Sonnet Aria Extreme PCI card (shows up as
an Airport card)--Location Office with the basestation
Mac #3	G3 Blue White 450 mhz with Sonnet Aria Extreme PCI card--
Location Office with the basestation
Mac #4	G3 Blue White 400 mhz connected to Airport Express via
ethernet--Location Kitchen, Airport Express also shares printer and
set of speakers
Mac #5	G4 iBook 1.3 gig 14 inch mostly used in Family room served by
another Airport Express which shares a printer and speakers--it can
roam anywhere in the house without losing it's connection
Computer # 6 Dell Insiron 9300 17 inch with Centrino processor
mostly used in Family room but can also roam anywhere in the house
without losing a connection
So, on my simple Wireless network, I have access to 1 laser printer
and 2 inkjet printers and 2 sets of speakers (1 is my home stereo
system, the other just a simple setup with a sub-woofer). All of the
Macs can share files, nobody ever drops off, unless they're asleep.
The PC plays nicely although we had to play around and tweak Norton a
bit. Plus the whole network is protected with WEP 128 encryption.

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-23 Thread VICTORIA.DUGGAN
Hi all if that is so then why does mac format give it 4.5 out of 5 as
a mac router and it only dropped the .5 % because of the price even
thought they are, roughly 30% cheaper that the airport base stations.
I think That it is each to there own on the router side and what
works for some may not work for others. My experience of routers is
Netgear all the way.

So who ever the original poster was you need to look at all the
options, check the prices see what you understand, then see what you
can afford if there is a router that is new that falls into both then
go for that one. if not then wait until there is.

I was given a wired Linksys BEFSR41 Router, v.3; firmware version

I don't know how long he had it, but it's been on since he gave to me

Oh, I've been told that before. Like with BellSouth DSL, after one
of their outages and my modem appeared fully connected yet wouldn't
allow mail or safari to connect, they blamed the Mac and said it
wasn't compatible with their system and it was my fault. If I would
only use Internet Explorer I'd have no problems. Of course a few
short hours later, all was working fineseems like one of their
servers got ALL of it's services up and functioning or something like
that, at least that was their explanation for the problem. After
that, I cancelled service with them and started using my cable
company. What a difference! And there have been similar incidents.

Onyx Question

2005-12-22 Thread Barry Muller

Based on an earlier thread I downloaded Onyx to do
some house keeping. I have run it twice and each time
it asks for my system password. Is that usual? I
know that to install software I get asked to provide
the PW, so I know I'm open to comment as to what am I
worried about, but this constant request for the PW
concerns me. I suspect that Onyx needs the PW to work
with the system files and the fact that I have to
enter the PW is indicative that the software does not
save the PW.

That is 100% normal. Yep, you're exactly right. Onyx needs the
password to be able to mess with system files, and the fact that you
have to re-enter it means that it does in fact not save the password.

go wireless. Don't worry about the future, by then a g (or n,
x, y or z) router will likely be cheaper than what a b is now.

You probably won't find any routers that are just 802.11b - g is
pretty much the standard and compatible with the Airport card in your
iBook. n is becoming the new standard but isn't 'standard' yet.

I steer people away from Linksys, I've heard bad things about their
reliability and features. D-Link seems okay as is Netgear.

Oh boy do I agree here. We completely stopped carrying Linksys
products this year due to their flaky wireless routers. We recommend
Netgear highly as well as Apples Airport stations for the
technophobes. The airport station is one of those areas where Apple
deserves its reputation for high price - they are very high priced
compared to other wireless stations. But there is something to be
said for one stop support. There is nothing worse then getting stuck
on the Support Merry Go Round of - you'll need to talk to Apple about
that problem - you'll need to talk to XYZ about that problem.

I'd also recommend just powering the unit up, plugging it into your
network and then trying it out with your iBook. But do be sure to
turn security on soon afterwards.

cheers
david

Re: Superdrive Question?

2005-12-22 Thread Dan K
I'd suggest either a Pioneer DVR-K05 or Matshita/Panasonic UJ-845, either
will work great. I chose for my TiBook the Pioneer unit, under US$90
(shipped) from zipzoomfly:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=171021

or from meritline for US$90:
http://www.meritline.com/pioneer-dvr-k-05-slim-8x-dual-layer-dvd-burner-dr
ive.html

meritline also has the UJ-845:
http://www.meritline.com/panasonic-uj-845-b-8x-slim-dvd-drive-bundle-nero-
suite-software-pc.html

Reading DVDs and CDs uses the same lens, but with separate lasers. I'd
try a light shot of compressed air on the lens before tossing the drive.
It's quite common for a bit of dust on the lens to foil proper operation
with one media and not the other.

It's possible the drive just plain broke. I have a 1GHz 15 Aluminum and the

as yours (DVD reads data and played movies, CD didn't read or write). Apple
replaced it under warranty for me.

You can add a SuperDrive to yours without any new hardware required. I've
purchased and installed them for customers and they work nicely. Here's a

Yep, it is possible it is plain broke. The guy I bought it from said

it did impact. Though not too bad, it is already repaired with a
little glue. There was no cd in the drive and I have learned that
this drive uses the same lens for both cd and dvd, so that would
indicate the cd components went bad. But I still wonder if the drive
failure had something to do with installation of some software, but
no telling at this point. There were clearly some issues with
10.3.9. I still am going to try and get this one working but will be
picking up a superdrive either way.

Thnx,

Dave

Airport Question

2005-12-21 Thread Amanda Ward

Hi All,

I've decided to go wireless with my iBook-500, but I don't have a
base unit yet. Just put an Airport (original) card in my 'Book and it
works fine... seems someone is running an open wireless network
nearby! :)
Anyway... I went window shopping for equipment over the weekend and
was amazed at what is available. Thus my question. Having an old
Airport card, is there any equipment I should stay away from? I mean,
I assume an older Airport base would work and the Airport control
panel says I'm accessing either a netgear or linksys network. Would
these work as well? And what of 802.11b vs 802.11g?

I'm pretty comfortable with wired networks, but there's a =steep=
learning curve for wireless.

Thanks for any advice!

Amanda

Re: Airport Question

2005-12-21 Thread VICTORIA.DUGGAN

Hi Amanda

I use a netgear wgt624 108mbps wireless router without problem.

The router is very easy to set up and i have no troubles connecting a
couple of laptops and a couple of desktops all via airport or
wireless connections. It lets my mini connect at the full 54mbps
airport extreme and my G4 tower and powerbook connect at 11mbps
802.11b speed via internal airport cards.

I also use a 2400 with an old dell truemobile card in using the
orinoco drivers and that connects problem free. The only problem i
have is when my mother in law come over with her windows laptop i
have to turn off the security i have so she can access it as the card
she uses does not support the same level encryption as i use for the
macs.

I'm pretty comfortable with wired networks, but there's a =steep=
learning curve for wireless.

Best thing is to start with the simplest setup, no encryption and use
all the defaults except the SSID name. Get it working and then keep
activating the features you want.

The one thing I always suggest is to survey the wireless environment.
Download MacStumbler and run it. It will tell you what channels are
in use and how strong the signal is. Pick a channel that is as
little used as you can.

A common mistake people make is to buy the router and just use all
the defaults. This often means several routers are on the same
channel in a given area. That is a great way to kill range. The
other thing is leaving the default SSID.

I've done some war driving and found a large percentage of routers
are operating on their default settings, or most of them.

Your iBook can only take an original Airport card (802.11b) so stick
with a b router unless there is something else that might go
wireless. Don't worry about the future, by then a g (or n, x,
y or z) router will likely be cheaper than what a b is now.

I steer people away from Linksys, I've heard bad things about their
reliability and features. D-Link seems okay as is Netgear.

I'm using a Motorola g but that is because it's rather full
featured including some unusual features I needed. I've got a Belkin
which is okay if slightly flakey. They did do a rather hare brained
thing on another router, it redirected web URLs to some other site
(they gave up on that fast). My SMC works okay but it's range isn't
as good as either the Belkin or Motorola.

Airports are good but they aren't cheap.

Superdrive Question?

2005-12-20 Thread David Rodriguez

G-day all,

I purchased a used G4 800 DVI Powerbook this last weekend.
Everything runs fine and its in great shape, except the Combo drive.
It was damaged by prior owner. DVD still works but no cd performance
at all.

So wondering about compatibility of Superdrives. Specifically, does

Could use the information relatively soon. Thanks,

Dave

David...

I'd say a critical question is, Why does the DVD work, but the audio CD does
not? I'm assuming the DVD audio is fine, correct? If so, then clearly there
is no laser registration issue, and the fact that DVD audio works indicates the
audio circuitry in the drive is fine. Are you sure there is not another,
simpler--but, perhaps less obvious--issue?

Re: Superdrive Question?

Actually I have several things to try yet re the combo drive. These
were data disks so really wasn't considering whether there was an
audio disk issue. Apparently there are some files though that can
get corrupted that I can try removing. Apparently resetting the pmu
may also have an impact according to the Apple web site. About to
shut down and try that next.

The thing is, yeah I may fix the combo drive, BUT I REALY want to
be able to burn dvd's on this too. So I am wanting to take the
opportunity to upgrade to a Superdrive. I can always sell the combo
drive off after I fix it if it happens.

But yes RB, they are audio cd's (with data files on them). Resetting
the pmu didn't work.

I am running Tiger 10.4.3. I am wondering if anybody has this
file? It is called 'CD Info.cidb' file. It is your in Users/Home/
Library/Preferences folder. Someone on the Apple site forum said it
get corrupted but I don't even have it. I suspect it gets created
after using some form of cd format, but this powerbook may have been
upgraded since the drive stopped working, so said file may never have
been generated. My guess anyhow...

So now wondering if anybody has it in their folder. Thanks,

G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread BGbank
Greetings folks, This may be a no-brainer Q... but I don't know...

I'm thinking of buying from a certain vendor a G4 ibook that comes without
an OS. My Q is, How can you install an OS if it doesn't already have one?

I have OS 9.1 CDs which came with this current G3 ibook (300mhz, 6gig, 128
ram). Will a G4 ibook (800mhz, 30gig, 640 ram) without any OS on it, let me
boot from and/or install this OS 9.1-CD, for starters? (Eventually I
would look to buy OSX CDs, etc.)

In other words, I'm sure the machine will turn on, but then what? Will a
G4 ibook w/o any OS on it even let you get to the Start Up Disk in the
Apple Menu/Control Panels so you can set it to start up on the OS 9.1 CD?

And then would it let me merely copy to HD the entire OS 9.1 from the CD?
If so, that'd be great. But if not, I wouldn't want to buy this G4 ibook if
I can't even make it work.

If it's more complicated than what I described above, does anyone know of a
webpage or URL that would list How To do such a thing, step-by-step?

Thanks for any tips!
Best regards,
Gail

Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that OS 9.1 CD.
Any Macintosh will be able to boot from an appropriate system install CD.
The CD has a version of the OS so that the Mac can boot from it. The only
gotcha is to make sure that the system install CD you have is appropriate
for the specific model of Mac you're planning to use it with.

metasyntactic variable: n. A name used in examples and understood to stand
for whatever thing is under discussion, or any random member of a class of

confusion, hackers never (well, hardly ever) use `foo' or other words like
it as permanent names for anything. In filenames, a common convention is
that any filename beginning with a metasyntactic-variable name is a scratch
file that may be deleted at any time.

G4 iBooks will require Panther or better. It will not boot into any

boot with the C key held down. Nothing more to it than that.

First, the price of the iBook should be discounted because there is no
original CD or OS loaded on the iBook. It should be sold with the
original OS and include the CD's but that does not happen all the time
so you will be responsible to get a licensed OS for it.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if there is
a problem.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not
boot and install on any other specific Mac. So your OS 9 CD from your
iBook may or may not work. Since it is an iBook CD your chances are
better that it will work. You will find out when you boot from the CD
and do the install process whether or not it will work for that
particular iBook. If you have access to the iBook try booting from
your CD by starting it or restarting it with the CD in the iBook while
holding down the C key.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C key
and following the installer instructions. It's easy to do. I would
suggest buying a retail version of OS 10.3 from the swaplist or eBay
as soon as possible. Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough
RAM and it would be a much better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever
was. If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on
it.

OS 9 on a G4 is like driving a Cadillac with a Chevette motor in it.

That sounds easy enough to figure out by checking some specs at everymac or
apple, which I did, and so I'm thinking OS9 would NOT work on the G4/800mhz,
first edition. I never had a mac w/No OS, so wasn't sure. Thanks again.

Yes, thanks. It is discounted, or was, I should say, because I just got
email to my query and in their ad/mac description it had said at the bottom
of the page Buy Now for $400 but he just wrote me to say that was a
mistake, as it was supposed to say that bidding STARTS at $400. I thought
it was too good to be true, lol. Of course he said if no one bids on it he
would gladly sell it for the $400.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if there is

Thanks for that advice. I didn't think about the fact there COULD be
problems unknown UNTIL an OS was put on it. And no, I don't know the people
but they are a power seller at ebay with refurbs and 30-day warranty only.

I love that C key tip, thanks! I wish I had access to it to try it out in

work out.

Yes, thanks, I already zeroed in on two good deals at ebay for the
10.4/Tiger but I won't need them if I don't get the G4-without-OS.

Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough RAM and it would be a much
better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever was.

I just don't think these 6gig'er clamshells are enough HD memory. I have
hardly anything on this current G3 clamshell (IE-OE-MS Office 98, etc.) and
it's slow as molasses and bogs down, etc. which is why I was looking for a
newer model with more mhz and more ram and mucho bigger HD. Also it's awful
heavy on the lap! ;-)

If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on it.

Definitely, I agree, thanks! Some good deals on OSX's at ebay, haven't seen
too many through the swap list yet. And since most newer macs COME WITH an
OSX, the only reason I was needing one was due to this possible G4-deal w/o
the OS, but thought if I could get it revved up first w/the OS9 which I
already have... but that's history now, I'm thinking it wouldn't work and if
I get the G4 I would just go ahead and get a separate OSX for it at the same
time since the prices don't look as bad as I expected (for full install
versions).

OS 9 on a G4 is like driving a Cadillac with a Chevette motor in it.

It should as the target disk mode is implemented in the firmware, even

Everything like MHz, RAM and even HD speed makes a difference in how
the OS will run. For the average user hard drive size only makes a
difference if it gets loaded too full, but mostly it just limits you
to how many apps you can have installed. Adding RAM will improve any
Macs performance and is easy to do. Adding RAM is always the first
thing I do with a new Mac and I try to add as much as I can afford. In
my opinion RAM gives the best return on your money of all the things
you can add to a computer.

I have a Clamshell 466MHz G3 with a 10GB drive that I have Tiger
running on with 320MB of RAM and it does ok on surfing and light duty.
I may end up putting Panther back on it because it was snappier than
Tiger is and for what I use the Clamshell for I don't need the added
perks of Tiger.

I also had a 300MHz Clamshell with 320MB of RAM and a 6GB hard drive
running Panther but the hard drive size was too small for what I want
loaded on it. Panther ran fine on it though and with thorough cleaning
and burning files to CD's it is easy to keep the junk from overloading
the Mac.

One thing about the seller who has the iBook is that he is probably
reputable but just does not have the OS CD's to sell with it. Too many
eBay sellers sell computers with a newer OS but no CD's which is
software pirating and generally is a sign of their honesty. Without
the CD's the hard drive should be wiped clean. So at least he didn't
add Panther or Tiger to the iBook to sell it for more money and that's
a good sign.

Even the Swaplist has far too many Macs for sale that have newer OS's
installed without CD's included in the sale, which is pirated software
and also a violation of the LEM rules but apparently the nanny never
reads the posts.

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in
addition to looking at the G4-800mhz w/o OS). I guess I do basic stuff
because have never had a machine big/fast enough to do much else, and only
recently got high-speed cable and before that, a total bear to even visit
ebay at all.

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if
the 500mhz would work OK w/Tiger but since that's what he has on it, maybe
it works fine.

Thanks Gene!

Thanks for the advice. I should've put more RAM on this clamshell a long
time ago. I had always heard clamshells were hard to open and install RAM
so was never anxious to mess with it. Would rather put any $ toward
something a little bigger/faster.

 I have a Clamshell 466MHz G3 with a 10GB drive that I have Tiger

I may end up putting Panther back on it because it was snappier than

I can't imagine fitting another OS of any kind of this 6gig, and I really
don't have that many apps for the same reason. So I keep it for internet
and email and some word-processing, but want to add a newer faster laptop.

And I definitely wanted Tiger on whatever newer machine because I heard that
spotlight is awesome for finding emails (I heard Walt Mossberg, WSJ techie,
on Charlie Rose one night rave about spotlight and how easy it is to find
emails, and that's exactly why I want Tiger. I've got a yahoo email list
and I just can't find emails anymore - I've reached the boggled-mind limit,
lol).

I also had a 300MHz Clamshell with 320MB of RAM and a 6GB hard drive
running Panther but the hard drive size was too small for what I want

Well, that's yet another reason I wanted a newer ibook, so it would have
CDRW on it! Zips don't hold much anymore and I want an INTERNAL CDRW vs.
all this stuff hanging off the ibook, like the zip and USB-hub, etc.

Thank you for explaining that! I just replied to the guy and asked why he
did NOT have an OS on it! ;-) Thanks!

BTW, it appears they sell more pc's than mac's so I was thinking maybe they
didn't know too much about macs.

Even the Swaplist has far too many Macs for sale that have newer OS's
installed without CD's included in the sale, which is pirated software
and also a violation of the LEM rules but apparently the nanny never
 reads the posts.

What's the most important factor on an ibook for it to work the best/faster?
Ram size, or HD size, or mhz/ghz size?
Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC G3-G4-G5 but
one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another comment at amazon
someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

THANKS Ron, Dylan, and Laurent! With all that advice I now have a much

Max RAM will have the most salutory effect - I'd say *AT LEAST* 512
MB is needed, 1 GB or more is even better.

I concur. I used my iBook G4 for the first week with just the stock
256Mb. Every time I switch apps the beach ball cursor sat and spun.
When I got the 1Gb upgrade it just jumped from app to app. At first
I considered the 512Mb upgrade. But then I figured I would
eventually go to 1Gb (1.25 Gb total) and my guesstimate for the cost
made the 1Gb now the more economical over all.

More is better! And that dang beachball, lol. I am too familiar with that

G3 iBook LCD question

2005-12-09 Thread GalBros
Hi, what is the exchange matrix for LCDs for iBooks, starting with the 500mhz
dual USB on up?

I recently obtained an iBook 500mhz with a busted screen. I was told all of
the non-clamshell G3 iBook LCDs could be used with it, but the 800mhz and
900mhz LCDs would be a slightly different color.

Thank you for the help!

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if

 it works fine.

The advise I always give is spend as much as you can afford. I can't
imagine 800MHz as only being adequate for Tiger. My 466 Clam does
just fine with surfing, email and ebaying. My 1.5GHz G4 Powerbook
doesn't do those things that much faster. A 300MHz G3 iBook would be
pushing it but an 800MHz G4 iBook will handle Tiger with no problems.

iBooks are made for Light duty use and he's comparing it to
something you would need a G4 Powerbook or G4/G5 Powermac for. Anyone
using high-end graphics apps or video apps should not be using an
iBook anyway. iBooks are for the home computer user and an 800MHz G4
has plenty of oomph for that. As mentioned 512MB or better RAM helps
too.

Now that you have fast internet you can get on the wifi wagon too !
The main reason I have a Powerbook and iBook is because I can use wifi

Caution though. it can make one turn into a couch potato ;-)

Hi Van, when I first heard of gmail sometime back I got excited about it and
tried to sign up but at the time it said I didn't have the
correct-something... maybe it was browser, can't remember now. I'm using
the highest IE there is for OS9, so I'm stuck until I move up to OSX. So I
checked again just now and it says something about by invite only...?

A few days ago I saw two authors on TV who had written books about google...
The Search and I think the other was Google Company. Maybe it's the
same for all search engine companies, but the one man said google stores
every single search done by every single person on the planet which, google
says, is so they can come up with better services, etc., but this author
said it could also be used, for instance, in divorce cases where a spouse
could get all the search info on their partner, etc., so he didn't think it
was a good thing.

I've never used webmail either... too cumbersome, too slow (or at least it

I had a Yahoo account for years but rarely used it and I use Gmail
 exclusively now.

Wow, big switch. I've never used any yahoo accounts I ever made either.
They almost make you have one just to use their other services, but it's a
waste of space. I don't like yahoo search engine either. I love google
search, totally clean search page, no junk, etc.

I don't use my ISP email at all because Gmail is so
 much easier.

Wow, now THAT I would have to see and experience! ;-)

I've used Gmail for a couple of years almost and have
used 7% of my storage space and I could have thrown away a bunch more
but I keep an archive of this list and 3 others.

Thanks! Very interesting! I do LOVE google search feature, and I love all
websites that have a google search feature. None others compare to it as
far as I'm concerned. So what if they are saving all my searches, lol, I'm
probably already considered a domestic terrorist (=by having politically

Hello, I would like to opine on this. I am a writer (legal) as well, and I
surf endlessly on legal sites to research.

While I do have an iBook, I prefer using my ancient Powerbook 5300c or 3400c
for my daily writing, especially when I am out and about. First of all, the
keyboard on these two machines (identical keyboards) are in my opinion the very
best Apple keyboard for typing. The keys have a nice feel to them, and take a
dedicated finger-punch to register, and the spring feel seems just right, for
me at least.

Secondly, both have cheap, cheap ($5-$10) batteries out there that still hold
good charges; the 3400c more so. I can pack my two 3400c li-ion batteries, or
my four 5300c ni-cads, and have productivity at Starbucks or the Waffle House
for 4-5 hours. Also, both can be made to be wireless.

Most importantly, while neither is a lightweight compared to today's moden
Apple laptops, both are pretty ruggedly built, and neither is expensive enough
to worry about getting stolen or broken.

Forgot to mention: The 1400 has a good keyboard also (I do not THINK it is
the same as the 5300/3400 type?). If a 1400 is too slow, then a 5300 would be
intolerably so for you. But maybe a G3 upgrade for the 1400 would be the
solution. Their batteries are expensive and getting hard to find in good
 condition,
 though.

Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-26 Thread Tom Ethen
I had a 2400c G/3 320 and it was pretty fast and small, but the battery life
forced me to get a G/3 600 iBook, dual USB and it is all I take on trips
now. It has great battery life, great WIFI range, is faster than the 2400c
and is much more convenient than the strange rear input panel the 2400c has.

That said, I did get another 2400c after I sold my G/3 320 for lots of
money, and play with it every once and a while even now.

I have had my iBook 600 for a couple of years now and so far no problems at
all.

In a message dated 11/25/05 6:38:09 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Do pismos really run a lot cooler than wallstreets?

Yes, very much so. And, they are a lot lighter, too.

If you must have the most current Mac OS possible, the Pismo is your
machine; otherwise the Lombard (lacks built-in Firewire, lacks built-in
Airport) is essentially the same machine. I own both, and both have been
upgraded to the greatest extent possible using Apple features and
third-party replacement drives. The Pismo is 500 MHz, a 60 GB hard drive,
and a dual-layer DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive (Pioneer DVR-K05); the Lombard is
400 MHz (built-in DVD decoder), a 60 GB hard drive, and a dual-layer
DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive (Teac UJ-845).

One thing that is important to me is DVD performance, and for this
purpose the Pismo and Lombard are equal, if a built-in DVD writer is used
(limited to 4X most of the time; limited to 2X in a few cases, both on
account of problems with the internal drive bay and its supporting chip
set); whereas the Pismo has no such limits provided an external Firewire
DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive (Pioneer DVR-110) is used instead (8X is easily
achieved with an external writer).

Either machine is usable with my digicams as these support both USB and
Firewire; USB is used as a fallback connection with my Fuji Finepix Pro
S2 on the Lombard, whereas Firewire is used as the preferred connection
on the Pismo with the same digicam.

Both machines are running Mac OS 10.3.9. The Pismo is easily upgradeable
to 10.4; the Lombard is less easily so upgraded.

Personally, I prefer the Pismo as it has essentially the same
connectivity as my Rev. 2 BW 450 MHz desktop. But, the BW has no
problems with internal DVD drive performance (it employs the recommended,
and required for 8X performance 80-wire/40-pin cable). Both support
10/100 Ethernet, which is my in-house networking standard.

I use a 12 g4/800 iBook (refurb) that was purchased 18 months ago

either carry it in a LapTrap case or carry a CoolPad (roadwired?)
and don't worry about it.

Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-26 Thread illovox
I guess I'll have to chime in like that squeaky wheel and weigh in against
certain iBooks: The white iBook G3 series--all of them--are dogs and to be
avoided like the plague. And it is not just cranky complaint, it is
acknowledged so by Apple, who still have an extended repair program in place
to handle the failures of logic board, screens and screen power and data
connections. Furthermore, if they fail in any other regard than the
extended program covers, then you are in for either an expensive or
complicated repair: expensive if you have to hire someone to do the work,
and complicated if you do it your self. The market believes them to be dogs
as well, for they continually sell at values well below the older Lombard
and Pismos on eBay, yes, but more importantly, in local classifieds of
computer savvy locations like SF and Seattle.

The iceBook G4 on the other hand seems to have corrected many of the G3
flaws.

I enjoy the ice form factor immensely. BUT, even the G4 iceBooks are very
difficult to self serve in repairs.

I also still have affection for my G3 upgraded PowerBook 1400c. The
keyboard is the best ever provided by Apple. It is light, and the active
matrix screen is gorgeous. A G3 upgraded 1400 can fly past many stock
Wallstreets in finder and non-ram intensive apps. It chokes at ram, but I
did choose to try the flash ram/virtual memory OS load, and it works like
a charm. It is easy to self service. It is a powerful net surfer with a G3
chip, even the 250 Newer chip, but it cannot and will not ever enjoy USB or
Firewire connections. If you use SCSI peripherals, then you are in luck.
it is stuck in OS9 at best, and web surfing options are shrinking in that
platform. Explorer has not been updated, Mozilla is buggy, Netscape--forget
it, iCab is nifty... And SO cheap to buy and build up these days!

2400s...nifty, but clunky as far as all the needed peripherals.

3400s...great, simply great. Slightly heavy, very thick. Easy to service.
Which is good because failure rates are increasing. These machines seem to
be slightly less robust than the 1400s build-wise, especially at the
track-pad clicker, which is the most frequently broken compenent I see. And
no wonder, underneath it's a tab of weak plastic against a steel
spring--guess who wins over time? Like the 1400s, cheap to buy, build and
repair. Basically stuck at OS9 also, although X-Post Facto will induce a
load of X.1 (and the loss of several functions).

Lomards are robust machines, easy to fix, handle X OK, but need special
tricks to load past X.3. Have USB, SCSI, no built in firewire, and you
cannot use firewire and a wireless card simultaneously due to the reduction
of PCMCI slots to one. You could use a wireless e-net bridge and firewire
at the same time though. Getting cheap enough to be good travel in risky
places units. If stolen, or seared by molten lava, relatively cheap to
replace.

Pismo--a very sweet machine. With 1 gig of ram and the 500 chip, a relative
screamer compared to the pack. Only the G4 iceBooks compare in price and
performance, but the Pismo is supremely upgradeable in ram load and
processor (even to G4), has more connectivity and expansion options, and can
handle even the latest X OS. Interestingly, you even see some tiBooks at
this price range, but the early ti's are not as fast as a G4 boosted Pismo,
nor as robust apprearance wise-issues with dents and paint chipping abound.

If you have the money, my suggestion would be a Pismo.

Yours,
Run

Then I bought a severely upgraded wallstreet, now a

The heat issue is probably connected with the G4 upgrade.
I never noticed the heat with the 266 MHz Wallstreet I used to have.
My Mom has it now, Wallstreets are tough.

If all you are doing is writing and surfing then a stock Wallstreet 300
MHz processor should work fine and will run a lot cooler.
I'm sure you could find someone with a stock 300 MHz wallstreet that
would be happy to trade.

Doesn't do much for the weight issue though.

The Lombard and Pismo are both thinner and lighter than the Wallstreet.
if you wanted a Lombard I could make you a deal on a 333 Lombard with a
400 MHz CPU.

My Pismo 500 G/3 is not as fast as my iBook 600 G/3 and that is the cold
hard fact. The Pismo is a great machine, but it is nowhere as portable as
the iBook 600, battery (on one battery) life is much less and WIFI
range is the same for both.

I have been trying out some various apple laptops,
primarily for use as a writing tool, though I want to
surf wirelessly.
I want small size, battery longevity, cool running,
wireless ability (doesn't have to be built-in as long
as I can add on).

I love those 12 white iBooks and would buy a used one
of those in a heartbeat, except I keep running into
people who are having repair nightmares with them.
Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I
just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12 iBook and
have the logic board go after a few months.

AFAIK you only hear about problems with iBooks because Mac users are so
particular and so vocal; they're actually quite reliable 'Books that
perform nicely for your intended uses. I really liked the G3/500
IceBook that I owned for about a year, and never had a problem. The
500-600 MHz models should be available at decent prices via ebay and/or
the Swaplist, and would do quite well for you.

My thoughts on how well other 'Books I've owned meet your criteria:
- The 2400c is a sweet little PB, BUT...
Good batteries (more than 60-90 minutes of runtime) can be hard to come
by. You might also find the 800x600 10.4 display a little cramped. If
you can find one that's been upgraded with a G3 processor and/or RAM maxed
to 112 MB, you might be able to live with the limitations. The keyboard's
only 87% of standard size so you might find it a little cramped (I didn't
but some folks do).
- A 1400c with a G3 upgrade and RAM maxed at 64 MB is a VERY nice writing
machine -- one of the best keyboards ever in a laptop. The 800x600 11.3
display seemed to feel a little bigger to me; only about an inch larger
diagonally than the 2400's, but felt a bit more usable. (I have a G3/250
1400 I'm looking to sell, if you wanna contact me offlist.)
- If you don't mind the heft (8 lbs. or more with battery, etc.) you'll
find the 3400c an EXCELLENT 'Book for writing and basic internet. The
display is also only 800x600 but it's 12...and the 144 MB RAM max is is a
nice upgrade compared to the 1400 and 2400; more than adequate for running
OS 9.1 comfortably. I've just switched to a 240 MHz model as my second
Mac, primarily for exactly the uses you indicate -- writing and internet.

All three of the x400 'Books do wi-fi internet quite well with PC cards,
so basically your choice of which to use will largely depend one three
factors: budget, display size preference, and speed (what's fast enough
for you). The Dual USB 12 iBooks are of course more modern and more
powerful and the 1024x768 display would feel very roomy compared to the
older 'Books, but you can save a pretty penny by going with one of the
x400's.

Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-25 Thread The Northerner
I have been trying out some various apple laptops,
primarily for use as a writing tool, though I want to
surf wirelessly.

I have a 1400 - too slow on the Internet. I bought a
Clamshell iBook. I liked it, but somehow my daughter
ended up with it.

Then I bought a severely upgraded wallstreet, now a
g4-500, and while I love the way it works, I dislike
both the size and the heat factor. As a writer, I feel
distracted by the heat coming up through my fingers.

I have heard the Pismos run much cooler.

I want small size, battery longevity, cool running,
wireless ability (doesn't have to be built-in as long
as I can add on).

I love those 12 white iBooks and would buy a used one
of those in a heartbeat, except I keep running into
people who are having repair nightmares with them.

Do pismos really run a lot cooler than wallstreets?

Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I
just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12 iBook and
have the logic board go after a few months.

Would like to hear comments from any other users on
the above.

Tom

Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-25 Thread Harvey L. Cox
Tom:

I did the Windows to Mac switch about 7 months ago. I was so impressed with
the desktop transition that I bought a used 12 iBook also. My reasons for
buying it are much like yours...I wanted to wirelessly access the internet
at home and office and I use it primarily for writing.

The heat factor was a bit troublesome at first. But, I bought a set of
laptop bumpers from www.bodelin.com and that helped both the heat issue and
ergonomics.

I understand your concern for the issue of problems after a few months.
While I only have 7 months under my belt with this new/used machine, I
believe it to very solid. I use my approximately 4 hours a day, primarily
on battery and have had absolutely no problems with it.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one just like it.

Harry is correct you can use the up and down arrow to go from one

What is the flash upgrade for the powerlogix CPU supposed to do ?

Because that's how far it gets before it freezes..it won't mess up
until it actually accesses the ram.:-) Double check all connections,
and reseat the RAM and CPU. These are the usual causes of such
problems. if it persists, then the the system isn't happy with the Ram.

Yes, the Pismo is kind of specific about memory. You really have to find
memory that is advertised for the Pismo or for previous, older models.

However, it is running Tiger. Should I leave well enough alone, or
should I update the firmware to 4.18?

Thanks.

file sharing password question

2005-10-28 Thread Susie

Hi Listers,

I have a PB G3/400 running OS X 10.4.2 (used 99% of the time) and a
BW G3/400 running OS X 10.3.9. I would like to move some things off
the BW and onto the PB among other things. I wrote my file sharing
names and passwords down on an index card which I keep handy but when
I try to log in as a Registered User on either machine, it tells me
I have the name and/or password incorrect. So I end up having to log
in as Guest. Is there some way to reset this information? Would
this be the same as resetting the Administrator password using the
install CD or is it hidden somewhere else? I can't figure out what
happened. Probably something simple but ...? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. No one but me uses either machine. TIA for any
suggestions. If it helps, this seems to have started when I upgraded
the PB to 10.4. I put the same password on both machines that I've
had since 10.0.

Try using the short names instead of the long names.

The easiest way to do it is to login as administrator, open the Accounts
preference pane and then set a new password for the user you're trying to
log into. If that user is also the admin, then you will have to reboot both
Macs with the system install CD and reset the admin password from the
installer.

You can also (from the command line in terminal) do:

sudo passwd username

That works without a reboot.
