Re: Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies
Does anybody have thoughts on the Time Machine vs. Mail angle? Thanks Harry, for your rebuild routine. I'm saving it in case this duplication happens again. For now, the duplicates are gone. Will the Imported mailboxes all wind up in a new Imported folder? Will they replace my existing set of a couple dozen folders or will they sit at the bottom of my existing list? If at the bottom, I'd have to somehow manually rearrange things to look like before. By the way, a couple years ago, I fumble-moused a folder or two into chaos. With Time Machine, I restored the entire Mail Folder in my UsersLibrary. Very Fast. Re: Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies
Al, What happens is that everything is put back just like it was and all of the items in a corrupted database are rebuilt. You can run this procedure over and over and at the end everything will be just like it was when you started. All Mail Box's will be the same and you won't have any folders that say Imported well unless you had Imported Mail Box's when you started. I especially use this procedure when I (for what ever reason) have mail that will not move or delete. Eccenually it is the same as selecting a mailbox and the selecting the Rebuild function. Re: Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies
Greetings Al, The best way to clean up the Apple Mail mailbox is to: Open ~Library/Mail then locate the file Envelope Index and drag it to your desktop. Then Open Mail, but when you open mail it will tell you that this is the first time that you have open Mail How ever that's Okay, click on the button to proceed and you will get a message that says importing mail If you have a lot of mail it could take quite a long time so be paicient. When it;s done you'll have a clean install of your saved mail. If you still have duplicates then your problem is elsewhere. Let us know after you've done the rebuild. These emails had remained in the Inbox or been moved to other folders or into the Trash after reading. Some messages were not duplicated. I use POP mail and keep the window shade at the bottom of the window. The Inbox contents usually amount to about 3/4 of one screen full. With the duplicated messages, the contents amounted to over five screens. On both occasions, I restored the offending Inbox with Time Machine. Time Machine created its own folder in Mail and provided the correct Inbox contents in a new Recovered Mailboxes folder. I dragged the contents of the bad Inbox to the Trash and then dragged the contents of the Recovered Mailboxes folder to the now empty Inbox. And all seems well. There is nothing wrong at the Gmail website. The same email account behaves properly on other devices in the house. This morning, with my back to the machines, I heard the Time Capsule working and then go silent. In an instant, I then heard a new message alert. Turning around, I found the duplicate contents in the Inbox. Mail was set to check for new messages every minute. Re: G4 Flat Panel DVD drive
I have a 20 G4 that I maxed the RAM out in, and installed a new DVD-RW into. You can get the DVD-RW at Newegg for about $12.00 and the RAM you can max out to 2GB with 1 GB RAM strips. You can get that from them too. Now, I'm not sure if your 17 can go up to 2GB RAM or not. There's a free program called MacTracker that'll look-up your exact iMac model and tell you the max you can go to. Then on iFixIt.com, you can find directions for doing the surgery... but it sounds like you've already been in there, so this should be a walk in the park. With the new DVD-RW, you'll really be able to utilize the Mac and have some fun with it. Good Luck--God Bless! The Disk Utility issue hasn't proven to be a problem yet. But, if the Eject key on my keyboard ever died, the 2nd issue could become a problem. Anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to why these issues exist? Yep, set the jumper to CS (cable select) and you should be in business. Confirm that setting by looking at the jumper setting on the CDRW you removed. If that doesn't work, you may have a cross-platform compatibility issue, which is not surprising given the age of the hardware. I've replaced caps on about a dozen eMac logic boards so far, with 100 percent success. Can't say that about G5 iMacs. :^( eMacs require ordinary solder/desolder skills, unlike iMac G5s, which have multilayer boards and use no-lead, high-temp solder. I've discovered that it's smart to replace only those caps that have bulging tops, whether they're leaking or not, or caps that are tilted from failure at the bottom rubber seal. You can go ahead and replace them all, but in my experience it's a waste of time. The most likely source of bad caps in an eMac (ATI and higher) is the down converter, which is plugged into the logic board on the side opposite the ports. There are 12 caps on the down converter board, and I've seen up to 9 bad ones ... and no bad caps on the logic board. Since the down converter powers both drives as well as the logic board, the range of symptoms is awesome. There are kits sold for logic board replacement caps, but none are available for down converters. A good used down converter is getting pretty hard to find, and what new ones are out there are more expensive than a working eMac is worth. I've managed to cannibalize bad down converters for good caps and salvage a few that way. But sooner or later I'm going to be forced to buy individual caps. Good luck! Bad capacitors plagued the G5 iMacs. I have opened several of those and the work is in replacing capacitors on the logicboard not opening it. Re: (Intel) iMacs reliability
My G5 iMac is working fine, though I did have to replace the power supply a couple of months ago. That said, however, I was forced to move to an intel iMac (21.5) due to the requirements for the iPhone 5. If you do go to Intel, try to get one that runs Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6.x) if you can. Unless you have something that mandates it, stay away from Lion/Mountain Lion (Mac OS 10.7.x/10.8.x); I'm having lots of problems with Lion. -- Sincerely, Dennis On Wed, Oct 10, 2012 at 12:08 PM, Robert Esposito bobespos...@mac.comwrote: Bad capacitors plagued the G5 iMacs. When in a hole, stop digging. The VERY first thing to do in a case like this is boot in safe mode and see if the problem persists. If this doesn't work, log in as a different user and see if the problem persists. If you don't have another user account on this system, go create one, and use it only for testing purposes. If the problem persists when run as the other user, then it's a system or software issue, if it doesn't, it's something in your user prefs. If it's a system or software problem, try re-installing the Logic software or re-applying the 10.6.8 Combo update. If the problem only occurs with your user account, get rid of all traces of the program in your user library directory. I have used disk utility on a OS X DVD to do a full check of the disk system for errors, and it came back clean. I ran AppleJack with all of the repairs, but that didn't make a difference. I do think the problem is storage related, because I ran the startup in verbose mode, and I kept seeing messages about I/ O delay errors flashing by on the screen. However, I don't know how to properly troubleshoot this or narrow it down. Any ideas would be appreciated. Re: Needed - Head phone jack for iMac G3 slot loader
Dave, If you're sure you don't want to salvage them, I'd sure appreciate it. I'd imagine the sound board work just fine, so I'm not worried about testing it. The one I have doesn't work because the iMac was dropped on it's face and this little sound board seemed to take the brunt of the fall. When the computer was picked up, the sound board was loose and rattling around in the case. Upon removal, I found the board cracked in half. I'm guessing when the iMac fell that since the headphone jacks protrude a little bit proud of the face of the computer it cracked. Anyways, it appears that the iMac now thinks headphones are always plugged in as I can't get any sound out of the speakers. Were you planning on scrapping these? If so, I might be interested in other parts/pieces too??? Especially if any of them were the DVD model. We're headed out for a while. Probably won't be back by email for a day or so, so no rush. Just have to chime in from the sidelines. As one who owns/uses G3 and G4 iMacs and iBooks--all now running OSX10.4.11 with max RAM, I have to give a round of applause to Jim's email. Concise, accurate; very helpful. This time, I tried booting in Safe Mode (hold Shift after chime, and release at gray apple), and the computer booted up, starting me at a user selection/login screen. When in Safe Mode, I ran Disk Utility and confirmed permissions were OK. I also reset PRAM on the next restart. Still, the computer either gave the black warning screen, or just went dark and shut off. Any other suggestions? I would rather not re-install from scratch on every computer, plus I like the advantage of having the same 'student' and 'admin' user accounts on every iMac in the lab. What you are experiencing is a kernel panic. In G3 iMacs on which OS X has been loaded, this usually means bad or incompatible RAM. To successfully run OS X on a G3 iMac, both sticks must be the same speed, have the same latency and preferably be made by the same manufacturer. IOW, they should be identical in all performance characteristics, except capacity, ie they can be of different sizes (64 MB, 128 MB, etc.) I have successfully done exactly what you are attempting to do, and also in a grade school Mac lab. Since OS X 10.4 is very picky about RAM, and does all sorts of strange things when it doesn't like the RAM, the first thing I do with a G3 iMac is to put it on its side and open the RAM door. Then I boot it from the Apple Hardware Test disk. If the iMac chimes and boots with the installed RAM, that's a good sign. If it beeps or refuses to chime and boot, I substitute RAM until it does chime and boot. If the iMac chimed and booted, I then check to see if the specs of the two sticks are identical. Both must be matched, with the same latency (CL: 2.5 etc.), and with the same PC100 or PC 133 numbers. The amount of RAM on each stick can vary, but the specs must be identical *in that particular iMac*. Mismatched latency can really play havoc with a G3 iMac running OS X, as can mismatching PC 100 with PC 133. Data moves at different speeds because of the mismatch and sooner or later OS X cries Help! and that's the kernel panic screen you see. (When I've got a large number of iMacs, I usually put all the available RAM -- 512 MB is optimal -- into a big pile and laboriously test pairs of sticks using just one iMac. As I identify specification-matching pairs, I mark them AHT OK and put them in an iMac. It's a lot of work, but it's the only way to ensure the iMac will run OK with OS X 10.4. OS X 10.3 and earlier versions were much more forgiving of mismatched RAM, but not good ole Tiger. If, after sorting out the RAM you still have problems, check to make sure the iMac slot-loader's firmware has been updated to (IIRC) 4.19f1 or something like that. I still find G3 iMacs that have never had their firmware upgraded to the latest. Since Apple's Software Update stopped being available to G3 iMacs online this year, you may have to dig into apple.com's support website a bit to find and download the firmware updater. Have fun! On Aug 16, 2012, at 8:34 PM, rebtevye wipeda...@gmail.com wrote: USE CASE: Supporting a grade school Mac lab and am trying to make a consistent load for all of the iMacs (G3, Indigo, 500MB RAM), with OS 10.4 and OS 9.2.1 PROCESS: I followed the recommendations in How to Clone Mac OS X to a New Hard Drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner instead of SuperDuper. To simplify this operation, I connected the target iMac to the source machine using a firewire cable, and starting it in [T]arget disk mode. RESULT: The transfer went very well, however, when I disconnected the two machines and tried to boot the target iMac, the gray OSX startup screen came up briefly, then a black square ~2 x 3 popped up on the screen and the computer shut down. When this has happened in the past, I started up from a OSX install disk and re-installed the OS. IOW, they should be identical in all performance characteristics, except capacity, i.e. they can be of different sizes (64 MB, 128 MB, etc.) I have successfully done exactly what you are attempting to do, and also in a grade school Mac lab. Have fun! Thanks, I'm passing this on to her. So the 1 MB RAM is rather minimum for some downstreaming. Do not confuse 1 Mb -- 1 megabit per second -- DSL speed, with the 1 GB RAM in her iMac. 1 GB RAM is *certainly* enough to play video. Few apps require more than 40 to 80 MB RAM to play a video, including buffers. Safari bumps its memory usage by only about 30 MB when playing a video on YouTube. The issue of 1 GB RAM being a minimum is wrt to the system as a whole - all the processes Leopard runs, plus Dashboard, Spotlight, and the user apps that all tend to be piggy - it adds up. But again, a GIGABYTE of memory is a LOT -- that amount of memory DOES NOT restrict video playing IN ANY WAY. The slow DSL speed can be quite restrictive, however. For example, when I play a YouTube video in Safari, it spikes to up around 3 Mbps as the buffers initially load (I have 15 Mbps service), then levels out to around 700 Mbps for a while, then spikes back to 1.5 to 2 Mbps as it rebuffers. If you view the network throughput using Activity Monitor, or even iStat Menus, while playing such videos, she should get a better idea if that's the bottleneck. - Dan. -- - Psychoceramic Emeritus; South Jersey, USA, Earth. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Hi Jane, In most cases Safari works great, you might give it a shot. There are the rare times that a page is looking for Internet Explorer or Firefox. The tech you spoke with must have either not known much about Mac or may have not known that you were using Mac. *Internet Explorer has not been available for Mac in years. I would suggest downloading Google Chrome and trying Shutterfly there: http://www.google.com/chrome/ I would caution you to not set or use Firefox as default browser for everyday use on Mac. My experience with Firefox on Mac has been horrible. Thus, I keep Firefox around only for those times when absolutely nessecary to use it. Google Chrome is much better. Although, I still use Safari as my default browser as it just plain works. Re: iMac 233 MHz bondi blue (rev. A) RAM issue
Hey Bertil, Me too! I have a 333 Mhz G3 Imac with only 192 mb ram. I'd love to upgrade to 512. Where did u get ur memory ? How did you determine that your Mac would accept the increased ram, trial error? I have run Pagemaker soft ware since first using Mac's, way back in 1989 and have files I still need from way back then. I upgraded the PM to verson 7 and now they don't make it any more and the files won't convert to Indesign so I can run them on my newest Imac running Snow Leopard. I still use the Pagemaker software daily but it is wonky from inadequate memory. Incidentally, when my 1998 Imac gave up the ghost, I bought 6 old G3's for parts ($200), and ended up salvaging 2 of 'em; both run Panther well, but more ram is needed for both). Dave Sheppard On 26-Jun-12, at 3:18 AM, Bertil Born wrote: Hi, i've just tried to breathe new life into an iMac 233 MHz ”bondi blue”. I've installed Mac OS X 10.3.9 (including 15 updates from Software Update :-) ) on it, and i've put 512 (256 + 256) MB of RAM into it. It works like a charm, just one minor issue though: according to ”About this computer” it only detects 256 MB of RAM, which is a bummer since i'm trying to install Indesign CS2 on it, which requires 384 MB or more... so I cannot install it. I still have a 32 MB and a 128 MB module from before the upgrade... i've read stuff about putting ”low-profile” SO-DIMM:s into the lower socket of the processor card. I cannot see any major physical difference between the different modules except the amount of memory IC:s on them, but still... if i put the 32 or the 128 MB module into the bottom socket and let the 256 MB module stay put in the top socket, is there any chance of the system detecting them too, so that i'd get 288 or 384 MB of RAM? Any advice is most welcome. Cheers! -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: kernel panic
Hi again, Couldn't reply to anyone yesterday, as this thing was going crazy with crashes and kernel panics galore. Yeesh! Last night it kept kicking me to a blue screen and freezing there. I did a Repair Permissions, which caused all kinds of mayhem after. (including the blue screen, and several crashes in a row, and another panic). I wasn't able to install Applejack yesterday. I downloaded it and installed it, but then it wasn't there. I'll try again. Wasn't able to copy/paste anything from Console, it just blues out a line and I can't do anything with it. Is there some magic trick to be able to copy/paste the Console log? I pulled the new RAM this morning and put the old back in, which so far is an improvement, though I'm still seeing a lot of error logs in Console, but so far today, no crashes (fingers crossed). Tech Tool showed the same failures when I redid the scan. My next step is to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. Anyway, just wanted to thank you Dan and Fabian for the earlier replies and I wish I could have gotten the panic reports and some of these error reports on here for your perusal. I did not do a clean install of the SL, I just installed it over my previous OS. (maybe that is the problem?) I'm wondering if I need to wipe the HD and reinstall SL? Or go back to the previous OS? The only other thing I've done recently is rip a bunch of my cd collection onto the computer, but I can't imagine that would cause a kernel panic. Or, where do I look for it to try and copy/paste it? Man, I hope this machine isn't dying, I can't replace it right now. Any advice is most appreciated. At 2:50 PM -0700 6/29/2012, druidygal wrote: I wasn't able to install Applejack yesterday. I downloaded it and installed it, but then it wasn't there. I'll try again. To elaborate on Bruce's reply... AppleJack is a special shell script that is run from Single User Mode. It is NOT a normal app -- so it won't be there where you expect. (Technically, it lives within OS X's Unix underbelly, in /private/var/root/Library/Scripts/, instead of /Applications). To run AppleJack, get into Single User Mode by holding down cmd-S while restarting your Mac. You'll see the Unix kernel of OS X load, then it will drop you at a command prompt. Type applejack, without the quotes, and hit return. It's pretty self-explanitory after that. At this point, just tell it to repair the disk. DO NOT run all the other tasks [*see below]. When AppleJack is done, reboot. That boot will take a bit longer than normal, as it has to rebuild the kernel caches. I pulled the new RAM this morning and put the old back in, which so far is an improvement, good. but so far today, no crashes (fingers crossed). great! Tech Tool showed the same failures when I redid the scan. My next step is to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. Why would your next step be to reinstall the OS? You are not running Windows. OS X does NOT corrupt itself normally. It would be better if you worked to determine the actual cause of the problems - hardware or software - THEN take the appropriate action. Otherwise, reinstalling - that's the equivalent of replacing the oil in your car when the problem is that you have flat tires! It's the type of thing that really poor tech support people tell you to do, just to get you off the phone. [*] Seriously. Think about what you're doing. You have an unstable system, so you need to do as little as possible. You DO NOT want to make things worse. DO NOT repair permissions, for example. That just makes no sense - in an unstable system you want to run around making changes to the operating system's files No. Keep it simple. JUST repair the file system itself. At this point you have TWO potential problems. 1) Memory failure. 2) corrupted HFS+ file system on your HD. While the memory is borked, you don't want to muck with the HD, because to fix the HD, the computer has to read data into that potentially failing memory! oops.Ok. You put in the old memory and things seem more stable. That's good. You addressed (1) first. If the machine really seems more stable, then Ok, NOW it's probably safe to repair that drive. Do that with AppleJack. Then see how things run. If things seem better, AppleJack it again, telling it to do everything. Then see how things run. THEN make a good backup. THEN consider trying that new memory again... - Dan. -- - Psychoceramic Emeritus; South Jersey, USA, Earth. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Oh man, thank you guys so much for this info! I'm going to try Applejack right after I'm finished here. On Jun 25, 2012, at 11:18 PM, Bertil Born wrote: Hi, i've just tried to breathe new life into an iMac 233 MHz ”bondi blue”. It needs 'single density' so-dimms, meaning that a 256 mb on should have 16 chips on it, not 8. That's the most common reason for only seeing half your ram. Double check in System profiler, to make sure memory's detected in both slots. If both slots show 128mb that's the problem. If only one slot shows ram present, it's either not seated properly, or the ram or one slot is bad. Swap the So-Dimms around and see what happens. -- Bruce Johnson Wherever you go, there you are B. Dan, Thanks for the suggestions. All of the files that are copied to an external device are ones I produced myself, for which I did not set the invisibility flag (at least not intentionally). I checked whether such a flag was set for any file by listing the source directory in Terminal by ls -al. I found no invisible files (i.e., filenames with a dot as first character). As for filename extensions, they are all there -- for example, it is always .rtf for files created in TextEdit's Rich Text mode. Are you trying to boot a OS disk or just a regular disk in general keeping it from booting? If you're trying to boot an OS disk you need to use a 10.2-10.5, 10.5 is the best as it provides the most usability and it runs well on a G5.
