[lace-chat] Wedding photos

2014-12-21 Thread Avital
Dear Arachnes,

My officemate took some photos of my son's wedding:

https://plus.google.com/photos/109530146870925961703/albums/6094378009835892833?banner=pwa

It was a very Israeli wedding, rather informal. I was certain that my
husband would be the only one under chuppah not wearing a tie, but the
bride's father also wore a white shirt, no tie. When I arrived, the
mother of the bride grabbed my arms and said, "Why didn't Orna [the
hat seller] tell me that we got the same hat?!" Technically, it is the
same hat--crocheted base with applied fabric flowers and machine lace,
but the colours are so different that you would have had to look
really closely. Her hat was white/pink and mine was white/red/purple.
Hey, we were just well-coordinated! :-)

The hall was amazing, like an indoor garden.

Son surprised us at the end when he took the stage and sang/played
with the band.

[lace-chat] Son getting married

2014-12-05 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

Just wanted to announce that my son Binyamin (our only child) is
getting married in 2 weeks, on Dec. 18! Yes, he and his bride are very
young (both 21) but they've been together for 5 years and are very
certain they want to do this. He has another year left in the army.
Ayala, his fiancee, is studying industrial design.

[lace-chat] Hacked accounts

2011-11-07 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

There have been a lot of accounts hacked lately, so this is a gentle
reminder: Do not click on any link that looks suspicious, even if it
comes from this list or from someone you know. "Suspicious" means
links that are posted with no comments or with comments like, "Look at
this wonderful site I found!"

If you do post a link to the list, please include a sentence or two
explaining what it is, so that we know that the link is genuine.

If you do not have a secure password for your email account, change
it! Insecure passwords are the number one way that accounts get hacked
or misused. Don't use sequences like 12345678 or easy to guess
passwords like "PASSWORD" (yes, people actually do that sort of thing)
or your birth date, spouse's name, etc. When you use an insecure or a
default password, it's like leaving your house key under the doormat.

Thank-you,

Avital

Tamara,

You're too clever to be taken in by this kind of spam. ;-)
Unfortunately, there are people out there who don't think these things
through and unfortunately they send payment ... only to get an
embarrassed email a few months later saying, "Hi, everyone, my account
was hacked. Hope no one got hurt..."

I got the same message on Facebook chat, from someone I hardly knew,
so that raised my suspicions. I replied, "Sorry, go find another
victim," and got a smiley in return.

[lace-chat] Admin: Andrea's message

2011-04-15 Thread Avital
OK, now I've finally found Andrea's message -- in my spam folder! I've
seen this at least 4 times over the past month, including from a
workmate who was sitting right beside me at the time. It's a scam. If
you were in trouble, would you turn to your lace-making buddies for
help? I mean, really

I've unsubscribed Andrea's account from lace-digest and
lace-chat-digest. Do NOT communicate with Andrea using this account.
If you reply to "her" email, you will get a message telling you how
relieved she is and with an account number where you can wire her a
couple hundred dollars to pay her bills, get her home, etc. There is a
real person using Andrea's account and it sure isn't Andrea.

[lace-chat] Admin: moderator email change

2010-09-12 Thread Avital
Dear Spiders,

I've changed the moderator email address (look in the footer of this
message) to a Gmail account from Yahoo. Since I've set it up to
forward emails automatically to my personal account, I won't have to
remember to check the moderator account once a week. So that should
mean a faster turn-around in subscription requests, address changes,
lost digests, etc.

You're always welcome to write to me if you need a human reply about a
problem with Arachne. If you have a subscription problem, please tell
me which list (lace or lace-chat) and whether you get individual
messages or digests. Lace, lace-chat, lace-digest, and
lace-chat-digest are four separate lists. If you don't tell me which
list you're on, I have to either download the membership files and
search for your address or send commands blindly to majordomo, hoping
that I get the right one.

[lace-chat] Photos of Sunrise over Amman

2010-05-07 Thread Avital
Twice a year the rising sun aligns with the twin towers of Amman,
Jordan, some 70 km from where I live. A couple days ago I dragged
myself out of bed and managed to photograph them just before 6 a.m. I
tried this last August and it was okay, but this year was even better
because the sun lined up directly behind the buildings. Interesting
thing is that in the cropped photo you can see the cranes (the
buildings are still under construction). This year I was able to use a
DSLR camera (Canon Rebel XSi or 450D) and 250mm lens.

http://apinnick.wordpress.com/2010/05/05/sunrise-over-amman-2010/

Here are the photos I took in August 2009, if you want to compare. I
didn't have a long enough lens for my DSLR, so I used a Canon
PowerShot S5 IS.

Well, if you ever go back to counted cross-stitch, another site I like

I've seen the ones in the Cloisters, too. I'd forgotten about that,
probably because it was part of a disastrous weekend when I broke up
with my boyfriend while I was in grad school. That's probably why I
remember the Cluny ones better. ;-) Also, I was traveling alone in

wanted. When you're with someone else you have to adjust to their
schedule.

I didn't know about it either, except that I was talking with a

and we both knew Roy, so I emailed Roy to ask whether it was possible

I saw the link posted to a spinning list that I belong to. Call me a

silly. This video was so over-the-top with the melodramatic music and
dialogue ("I'd die for it. In fact I know some people who have") that
I couldn't stop laughing. Then I sent the link to all my English

Just joking. We're about to undergo a wave of firings at my company,
so we're all coming up with worst case scenarios. At lunch today one
of my coworkers said he'd become a Playboy Magazine photographer and
the other said he would become a professional sperm donor (if you know
them, you'd see the absurdity). If I wanted to sell my work,
however, I wouldn't sell greeting cards because they're simply not
very popular in Israel. There are fewer card-oriented holidays and so
many people have Internet, so it's much easier to send e-cards. But
people do pay good money for Judaica. It's not easy to break into that
market with so many talented artists out there, but it pays better
than greeting cards!

At the moment I like to pursue my hobbies as hobbies. Whenever people
say, "You should sell your
knitting/crochet/tatting/drawing/painting/whatever," I always say,
"But that would take all the fun out of it." After all those years in
grad school I don't want to end up in my very own sweatshop. ;-)

It's really not a problem. The things that are problematic to ship are
explosives, inflammable substances, drugs, and anything forbidden by
local laws. Last time I checked, both Israel and the US allow their
citizens to use craft knives. The only stipulation is that it must be
wrapped up properly so that a postal handler doesn't get injured.
Getting a craft knife sent by Tamara is no different from my ordering
one from Amazon or Fred Aldous or Dick Blick. Totally legal.

When I was a teenager, a Polish friend of my mother used to do amazing
paper cuttings of roosters, flowers, etc., from magazine pages. She
did the traditional kind (sorry, can't think of the term and certainly
can't spell it without checking) where different coloured papers are
layered. I remember her son pointing to an amazing chrysanthemum paper
cutting and telling me, "That used to be a picture of meatloaf." From
Hamburger Helper to art.

Actually, X-acto knives can be sent to Israel easily. I might have to
order them from Fred Aldous in Manchester. The only problem with
bringing the knives into Israel is if they are packed hand luggage.
Since most of the systems engineers I know who go abroad frequently
like to travel with only hand luggage, this is a problem! ;-) There

[lace-chat] Paper-cutting tips

2008-11-11 Thread Avital
 it does reduce the
eye strain and help me to make neater cuts. You also should have a
good source of light nearby.

Designs and inspiration:

http://elsita.typepad.com/allaboutpapercutting/

The woman who runs this blog has a very modern style. She has many,
many links down the sides of the page to other paper artists and you
can get a good idea of different styles by looking at their work. The
Russian woman who taught my neighbour was obviously taught or
influenced by the Israeli artist Zippora Neeman. She uses the same
designs and techniques. I've only started skimming the surface and
have browsed through maybe a dozen of these links.

Here's an Israeli artist (originally from England) who has a very
modern and geometric approach to Jewish papercutting:
http://www.archiegranot.com/index.asp

Joe Bagley, an American artist, does some impressive work. I assume
that he starts with B/W photographs for his architecture paper
cuttings: http://www.papercutsbyjoe.com/intro.htm His paper cutting
of Big Ben is amazing.

There are almost no decent books on the market that I could find (I
was looking around Amazon for books to put on my wish list for my
birthday), so I recommend looking around the blogs and Web sites for
ideas. There is a craft book called "Craft Workshop: Paper Cutting,"
which is available on Amazon (I picked it up in a bargain bin). I
don't recommend it. The projects are extremely simple and sort of
artsy-craftsy -- lampshades, shelf trim, desk accessories, that sort
of thing. Interestingly, I found that one pattern looked strangely
familiar. I pulled out my Vinciolo "Renaissance Patterns for Lace,
Embroidery and Needlepoint" book (the little Dover paperback with the
purple and red cover) and discovered that the pattern was based on one
of the punto in aria patterns, so you might want to try translating
lace patterns (especially needle lace) into paper cutting.

Another book that is available is "Papercutting: Tips, Tools, and
Techniques for Learning the Craft." It teaches you how to cut in the
German style (flowers, birds, hearts, often painted with watercolours
afterwards). If that style appeals to you, then the book is worth a
look.

Enjoy! It's an incredibly easy and cheap craft and requires very
little equipment or storage space.

This kind of work is usually called paper sculpting. Although cutting
is involved, the 3-dimensional effects require molding, etc.
Traditional paper-cutting is 2-dimensional and flat.

Dear Spiders,

Does anyone do paper cutting (Scherenschnitte)? A neighbour took a
course and explained the basics to me. Since I was stuck at home with
a cold for a couple days and had bought a knife, I thought I'd give it
a go. Here are pictures of my first two tries:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr/sets/72157608480889917/

The first attempt is pretty bad. The second one was a big improvement,
after I learned how to control the knife and remembered how to draft
geometric borders. (Haven't done that since I was around 20, when I
did calligraphy as a hobby.)

When you know not where to turn,
stay still, just where you are.
There is something yet to learn.
Be careful lest you jar the threads that
fate is weaving in a patternyou can't see.
Be Passive.

Trust the Hand that works the looms of destiny.
Though it is your wish to set things right
and put things straight,
Choose the wiser way.
Have faith.

There's a purpose in it all,

[lace-chat] Admin P.S.

2008-06-11 Thread Avital
Forgot to add this to my previous gentle reminders list:

Please don't send the same message to both lace and lace-chat. Lace is
for anything related to lace. Lace-chat is for everything else. So
lace is fine for stories about your cat knocking over your lace-pillow
but not for a discussion about your cat's vaccinations. Lace is fine
if you're looking for a lacemaker and can't find a current address or
if you want to comment on a lace-related eBay auction or a
lace-related painting. Lace-chat should be used for jokes, non-lace
topics.

If a lace-related topic veers into chat, then please change it to
lace-chat and only post it there. Things get very confusing when the
same thread is sent to both lists.

[lace-chat] Gentle reminders

2008-06-11 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

The behind-the-scenes admin duties are starting to consume more of my
time than I would like, so I am sending out this list of gentle
reminders.

1. If you are a digest subscriber, please change the subject heading
to something meaningful when you reply to a message. If you leave the
digest number as the subject, it messes up people's filters and it is
useless for finding the message later in the archives.

2. If you are having trouble unsubscribing, please check the following:
   a. You are sending in PLAIN TEXT.
   b. You are sending the unsubscribe command from the same account
that you want unsubscribed (you'd be amazed by how many people change
their accounts, then try to unsub the old address using the new
account; it just doesn't work that way).
   c. You are unsubscribing from lace if you get individual messages
and from lace-digest if you get the digest. Lace and Lace-Digest work
like two separate lists.

3. If you have tried everything and still can't get yourself
unsubscribed, you can write to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], but
please, please, please tell me which list you are subscribed to. There
are four lists (lace, lace-digest, lace-chat, lace-chat-digest) and it
does take a fair amount of time for me to download four subscription
lists, check for your email (and any number of close aliases --
sometimes people don't know what their actual email address is and use
something close because it works), and then unsubscribe it from that
list. An aside: sometimes I ask people whether they want to be
unsubscribed from lace or lace-digest and I get the reply, "Yes,
please." Duh.

4. Archives are at http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] and
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] Someone told me
that she couldn't find a message there and thought that it might have
disappeared. Well, mail-archive is free and assuming the principle of
"You get what you pay for" works there, that's what there is. Since
I'm not the list owner I don't have the authority to set up
list-archive software on the server or to tinker with the
majordomo-generated software.

5. Another thought on 'disappearing messages' in the archive. Some of
you send your postings to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The message gets posted
because majordomo recognizes both addresses ([EMAIL PROTECTED] is
actually an alias for the longer address). However, anything addressed
to that email will not appear in the on-line archives because
mail-archive.com has no way of knowing that it's the same list. Same
applies if digest subscribers hit 'reply all' and send to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Everyone will see your message but
mail-archive.com won't save it.

Thanks for bearing with me. We return to our regularly scheduled
program of threads

Best wishes,

Avital

[lace-chat] Back from London, plus pictures

Alice and other spiders,

You're lucky to have found a cheap hotel in London! I got back last

Golders Green Road! That would have given friends in Israel quite a
shock. Oh, and vegetable prices. Wow

It was cloudy and overcast the whole time I was in London and
Manchester, but I managed to take some decent photos at night, when
the sky doesn't matter so much. I didn't have a tripod, so all the
photos were done with a hand-held camera. Here's the link:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr/sets/72157604170010910/

There are photos of Big Ben, the London Eye, Hampton Court, and St.
Pancras station. The only photo from Manchester that I posted is the
one of the wine glasses on a table. That pretty much sums up my visit
to Manchester, which was a bit dull (unless you're one of those people
who loves meeting lots of strangers you'll never see again and
listening to endless speeches).

[lace-chat] Admin: Moderator going on holiday

2008-03-10 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

I'm heading off to England tomorrow morning for a double bar mitzvah
(DH's twin nephews). I've packed clothes for the stormy weather.

Sorry I won't be able to meet up with any Arachnes, but it's going to
be a fast trip. Two days in London to see my sister, then a train to
Manchester on Thursday for the bar mitzvah, back to London on Monday,
and back to Israel on Tuesday. And, no, I'm not worried about someone
reading this email and breaking into my house because it would be
really tough for a stranger to find my address and then to get past
all my watchful neighbours and steel-reinforced front door (required
for insurance purposes).

When I get back I'll straighten out subscription problems, etc., but
until then I will not be checking my email. Have fun while I'm gone!

Best wishes,

Avital

Ah--didn't see that Ricky sent a CC to the lace-chat list!

I'll just add the following bit that I wrote to Ricky off-line,
omitting the stuff that I wrote in response to Tamara's posting:

It's great for cucumber salads, French fries, scalloped potatoes,
Chinese stir fry vegetables, julienne carrots (where you don't want
them grated), sliced cabbage and sauerkraut (fantastic for that
because you can use half a cabbage or a quarter of a large one!). Be
careful if you're trying to cut a flexible vegetable like bell
peppers. They might get mushed up inside the blade. Good luck!

Re: [lace-chat] Re: mandoline

2008-01-28 Thread Avital
Ricky wrote to me off-line, so I sent her a link to a guide in English
for her mandolin and some tips on using it. It's a really nice one, a
Matfer. Here's the link if you want to have a look at it.
http://www.fantes.com/matfer_mandolin.htm

Basically, a food processor will do almost everything a mandolin will
do but a mandolin can handle much larger pieces of food (e.g., whole
onion, half a cabbage, large potato), so there's less food prep
involved. When I want to chop up vegetables really fast for soup
before I rush off to work, I get out the mandolin and a small knife or
peeler, prepare the veggies, chop on the mandolin, then rinse the
mandolin parts under hot water and I'm done. Clean-up of a mandolin is
also much faster than with a food processor.

But a mandolin has to be treated with respect or you can lose a
finger. Seriously. They're very sharp. I bought my first Borner for
about $10 when I was a student and couldn't afford a food processor.
Even after I got a food processor, I kept the mandolin for fast jobs
and I've only just replaced my mandolin with another Borner (now
they're about $20). The old mandolin was still functional but the
blades were getting a little dull. They take up very little space. If
it weren't for the fact that they can be quite dangerous, I would
recommend them for everyone, but you really don't want to let kids or
inattentive cooks use them. A friend bought a Borner and said that all
her kids (they're adults, BTW) call it the 'finger slicer' and refuse
to use it.

What brand do you have? I have a Borner (plastic with metal blades --
definitely one of the cheap models) and I love it. They all work
pretty much the same way. You must be zealous about using the hand
guard because any mandoline can give you really nasty cuts. I use mine
mainly for slicing or julienning vegetables.

[lace-chat] Photos I took

2007-12-30 Thread Avital
Hi, spiders,

I got a new camera last week so that I could take a photography course
at work. So far I've had one lesson, but it inspired me to drag my new
camera out in the evenings.

I took this one as an experiment in how light affects a camera at
night. The light in this photo was orange and white but the camera
brings out the blue and green tones of the fluorescent and mercury
vapour lights.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr/2148787266/

And here's one I took of the moon. It's not artistic at all, just a
challenge to produce something that didn't look like a fuzzy pingpong
ball.

Zapping for 10 seconds (and 10 seconds only) will also speed the
rising. So will putting it into a warm oven.

Personally, I've stopped using commercial yeast. I've been baking
solely with my homemade sourdough starter (just flour and water and
whatever wild yeast is floating around), which I've had for about 5
years now. The bread itself is just flour, water, and salt. Because
there's no fat, it does go stale slightly faster than loaves with fat,
but it seems to keep almost forever! I've sometimes found forgotten
half-loaves in the back of the fridge that were 3 weeks old and they
were just fine.

Yes, some of the tools are netting implements. I see a netting shuttle and
gauges. They're rather coarse and wouldn't be suitable for lace. I'm not sure
what the things that look like awls with wooden handles are for. The bit of
'display lace' looks like Coronation cord with crochet. It would be quite a feat
to produce that with netting equipment.

RE: [lace-chat] Gender of names

2006-08-28 Thread Avital
Re: Leslie/Lesley. It may be a generation/regional thing. When I was a child in
southern Ontario in the 60s, in my pre-Avital incarnation, kids would say to me,
"'Leslie'? That's a *boy's* name!" Yet, in the 70s, my high school phys ed class
had *four* female Leslies. In fact I don't think I ever knew a "Lesley."

Re: first names. A linguistics prof/friend whose area of expertise was language
and gender told me that once a name is used for females, it tends to die out for
males. That certainly holds for Valery, Hillary (and variants), Julian, and
others. Or maybe it only holds for old Roman names. I've
noticed the same in Hebrew names. It's becoming increasingly common for girls to
have formerly male names like Daniel (probably spelled Danielle in English) and
Ariel (despite the Little Mermaid, Ariel is predominantly a man's name in
Israel). We also have a whole slew of unisex names like Simcha, Sima, Sharon
(yes!), and Dror. Mind you, the choice of Hebrew women's names is far smaller
than men's (no surprise when you read the Bible or Talmud), so a lot of the
women's names are modern names derived from flowers or stones.

My sister is named Tacey, from the Latin "tacere" (now there's a misnomer). When
we were young, she could never find personalized stationery, placemats, or name
plates, which are important to little girls. I once told her that I'd read in
the paper that people with unusual names have a greater chance of ending up in
prison. We're still on speaking terms.

As for Ms/Mrs, I'm glad that Hebrew has only one form of address (geveret) for
women and it doesn't indicate anything about marital status, so we've been
spared that battle. Israel is a fairly informal society, so I use my first name
for most contexts and "Dr." (PhD) only in academic settings, where pecking rank
becomes important. I once told my doctor to call me Mrs. Pinnick when he did the
"Me, doctor. You, Jane" routine, but that's an exception. I was feeling
irritable that day. ;-)

RE: [lace-chat] DVD's for UK

Australia is region 4. But there are various 'hacks' available. I work in
pay-TV, so it's not hard for me to find someone to hack a player, if I happened
to own one. If you know someone who's fairly geeky, then you could try asking.
For PCs, it's fairly easy to find a program to convert the DVD player to
multi-region. For TV DVD players, it depends on the manufacturer.

If you're giving people DVDs in other countries, you could always order from the
Amazon of their country. When I used to be able to play only Region 2 DVDs, I
ordered mainly from Amazon.co.uk. If you're giving to someone in the US, you can
order just about anything from Amazon.com and it will work. For Europe, order
from Amazon.co.uk.

RE: [lace-chat] Expressions

2005-12-25 Thread Avital
Hmmm. Maybe Clive uses it in a different sense from what I've heard. Also, I
can't imagine how the expression would be used. Would Clive say, for example, "I
called her an ugly cow, but she just smiled because she knew I was just taking
the mickey out of her" (i.e., "She knew I didn't really mean it because I
followed it with 'bless your heart'")?

At our local clinic, the new doctor in town hung up his umpteen medical
certificates, including his Harvard diploma, in the hall on the way to his
office. This was considered a tad pretentious because the other doctors had
theirs in their offices. The English receptionist told me that she took the
mickey out of the doctor's equally pretentious wife by saying, "Have you ever
seen all these certificates before?" The American woman rose to the bait by
getting huffy and said, "Of course, I have!" It was not meant to be an endearing
softening of an insult. She was just pulling Mrs. Harvard Medical School's leg.

I've heard "taking the piss" out of someone as a synonym for "taking the mickey"
and I think both expressions mean pulling someone's leg to deflate them, like
pricking a balloon to let out the hot air. One does this to bring someone down a
notch or two.

Maybe one of the English Arachnes could clarify the definition as soon as you
folks recover from your Christmas pudding, wassail bowls, and King's College
Choir marathons. And you'll have to tell us what the Queen wore this year during
her annual address! ;-)

RE: [lace-chat] Printing wide pages

2005-11-11 Thread Avital
That's very common if one is trying to print on A4 paper from Web sites that
think the entire world uses American 'letter size' paper. ;-) Or it might just
be incompetent Web design.

There are a number of ways to do this, but this is the simplest.

1. In the browser, choose Page Setup from the File menu.
2. Check the Landscape option.
3. Click OK. Now her pages will print width-wise on the paper instead of
lengthwise.

It is important to change the Page Setup back to Portrait. If you don't,

[lace-chat] Looking for photo archive boxes in UK

2005-07-17 Thread Avital
UK Arachnes (esp. in Manchester area),

Does anyone know where I can get acid-free photo archive boxes (5x7") in the UK?
My husband's nieces from Manchester are coming to Israel in a couple weeks and
would be able to bring something light. I've tried googling but found only
manufacturers like Pel. I haven't found any sources that allow on-line ordering.

Your name isn't "Helen Gannac"? That's what appears in all your e-mail headers.

That's how many of us in Israel feel. Statistically, far more people die in car
accidents in Israel than in terrorist attacks. But my SIL is sending her
daughters to Israel for a couple weeks and wants us to take cabs everywhere,
instead of buses. "Um, Mandy, have you ever seen how some of those Israeli taxi
drivers drive? Like they're competing for the bobsled events in the
Olympics" You're a lot more likely to survive a bus accident than a taxi
accident on the highway. I've only heard of a couple bus accidents in all the
years I've lived here, and they were mainly on the long road to Eilat, where
drivers sometimes fall asleep late at night.

That depends what you mean by "correct." The piece you quoted is an editorial
written by a free-lance writer named Jonathan Wheeler.

It's fairly widespread on the Internet (more on fringe sites than mainstream

is. I think CNN gives a better summary of the US Intelligence Reform Bill:

[lace-chat] Looking for dust ruffles in the UK

2004-11-17 Thread Avital
Dear Spiders,

At long last I'm back on-line. My home computer was gone for nearly a month,
supposedly having its hard drive replaced. When the technician finally
showed up, he brought me a new computer and confessed that the old one had
been stolen from his car the night after he picked it up. He'd been hoping
that it would 'turn up' somewhere. They must have very considerate burglars
in Beitar. Oh, well, since I was prepared for HD failure and had backups of
everything, I wasn't heartbroken to have a new computer with a larger (80G)
hard drive.

DH will be going to England for a short visit in 3 weeks. I'd like to order
dust ruffles (aka bed skirts, those flouncy things that cover the box
springs of a bed) over the Internet to be delivered to his sister in
Manchester. I'm getting nowhere with Google (it just turns up those Web
directory sites and I have no way of knowing whether I'm dealing with a real
business). I've tried Marks&Spencer's site but they only sell more common
items like sheets, duvet covers, etc. Do any UK Arachnes have suggestions?

TIA,

Avital

Re: [lace-chat] Computer help please

2004-10-07 Thread Avital
GIF files have fewer colours than BMP files. That's one of the reasons that
GIF files are good for compression, but they're better for very simple
designs, like logos. If you're saving something like a photo, with lots of
colour gradations, you will lose a lot of colour definition. It's better to
save them as JPGs. Also, if you're only sending them by e-mail or uploading
them to a Web site, you don't need a resolution higher than 72 dpi. Pictures
directly from a digital camera have a much higher resolution and should be
converted to a lower resolution before you send them to everyone in your
addressbook!

Best wishes,

Avital

Re: [lace-chat] joining up Yahoo

2004-09-05 Thread Avital
Jean, most of these problems sound like they're a result of the Yahoo groups he
belongs to. It's true that some send enormous files (if the moderator has configured
the list so that attachments are allowed) and that some accounts will get start
bouncing.

Liz, I've had my free Yahoo account for years and been satisfied with it. I use it as
my "throwaway address", to keep spam off my regular account and as the address that
appears on my Web site.

You mentioned the greetings. There is a caveat--in the past all the greetings were
free for Yahoo users. Now you have to make sure that the greeting card actually says
"Free." If it doesn't say free, then you can sign up for a 30-day trial membership
with AmericanGreetings.com. The yearly membership costs $13, so I don't bother
subscribing to that. You still get a reasonable choice of free greetings to send but
not nearly as many as when they were all free.

Other pluses of the Yahoo membership are an on-line calendar (reminds me to make
backups at the end of every month or to defrost meet on Wednesday), backups of all my
bookmarks, and RSS feed from my favourite blogs. There are some blogs I like to follow
but I don't have time to click to each one every few days to see if there have been
changes. With the RSS feed, I can add the blogs to my "My Yahoo" page and see
instantly what's changed, all on one page.

If I were to travel a lot I'd use my Yahoo account more, because you can access it
from any computer connected to the Internet. So far I haven't had any problems with
the Yahoo account. The basic account with 100M storage is free. Yahoo accounts do tend
to get spammed, but 95% of the spam goes into the bulk mail folder, which is
automatically deleted every month or so, so I never see it.

>>>

ARACHNE FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Version 1.0 (17 June 2004)

1. I just came back from vacation and want to read what I missed. Where are
the archives?

http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

2. I haven't received a digest for two days. What should I do?

Go to the archives (see above). You can view the messages by date. If you
see a lot of messages that you haven't seen before, then you are probably
missing a digest. Remember that the digest does not appear every day. The
list is configured to send out a digest when 22K (about a dozen) messages
accumulate. If the list is quiet, you might not see a digest for a day or
two.

3. I checked the archives and definitely missed a digest. Where can I get
it?

E-mail Avital, the moderator, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (take the
"nospam" out of the e-mail address). I keep backups on CDs. Occasionally I
miss a digest, but my collection is fairly complete.

4. What are SPs (Secret Pals)?

Secret Pals are a monthly gift swap. The current coordinator is Brenda
Paternoster. E-mail her at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (take the
"nospam" out of the e-mail address) if you want to participate.

5. How do I thank my Secret Pal?

Send your thank-you note to lace-chat, not lace. If you are not subscribed
to lace-chat, then you must type "SP Thanks" (exactly as spelled, with same
capitalization) in the subject line. That should allow non-subscribers to
post their messages to lace-chat.

6. Who runs the list?

Liz is the list owner and I am the moderator. I take care of the day-to-day
business.

7. I just got a virus from Arachne. Should I send a warning to the list?

No, you shouldn't. What you got is a virus from someone else who has Arachne
in their addressbook and makes the "sender" look like Arachne. Arachne is a
majordomo list on unix machines and is currently not affected by viruses.

8. I just got a virus warning from my brother-in-law's best friend's
ex-wife's boss, who used to work for Microsoft and plays golf with Bill
Gates. Should I send it to the list?

No, you shouldn't. Even "reputable sources" and computer experts slip up and
there are a lot of viruses hoaxes floating around. Check it first at
http://www.symantec.com or http://www.snopes.com or ask me to check it out.

9. Are the archives private?

No, they're not. Mail-Archive is a free service and you get what you pay
for. They are able to disguise the addresses so you won't be spammed, but
it's best not to post personal details to the list like your address and
phone number.

10. I'm going on vacation. What should I do?

You should unsubscribe. The list does not have a "no-mail" option. If your
account gets full and starts bouncing, Liz will ignore it for a few days. If
your account bounces for more than a few days, then she will unsubscribe
you.

11. I just sent a digest by accident to the list. Should I unsubscribe,
change my name, and move to a place where no one knows me?

Relax. The list will not accept a message as large as a digest. It will
probably bounce to me and I'll trim the digest.

12. What's the rule about advertising?

Generally, we discourage advertising by professional vendors because that
would greatly increase the volume of the list. It is okay for a vendor to
say "Hi, we have blue matte contact paper" if someone asks for it. It is
okay if you want to sell your extra bobbins and pillows or announce that
your guild has a book or pattern for sale, because those are one-off
announcements. What we want to avoid are messages like "This month's thread
special is xxx and I just got the following 18 new books and I accept Visa,
etc., etc."
Announcements in sigs are perfectly okay as long as the length of the sig
isn't excessive (if the sig contains 3 pages of advertising, then that
defeats the purpose of this rule).

13. How can I be a model of good Net behaviour?

Trim quotes: Remember that most of us have pretty good memories and it is
usually not necessary to quote more than a few lines of the posting to which
you are responding.

Use meaningful subject lines: If you are a digest subscriber, change the
subject line to something meaningful, instead of the number of the digest.

Stay on topic: If it's lace-related (including lace you may have seen on
vacation), it's okay to post it to lace. If it's a joke, recipe, description
of your daughter's wedding, your reaction to a political figure, a movie, or
a TV show, then it probably belongs on lace-chat.

One of our TV shows is discussing 'soundbites' - the short, sometimes witty,
"memorable" things politicians say. One mentioned was John F Kennedy saying
"Ich bin ein Berliner", hopefully meaning "I am a Berliner", but what he
actually said was "I am a dougnut". Not speaking German, can any of you who
do tell me what he should have said - I gather it's got something to do with
the grammar or the real German word for a "Berliner", like a "Londoner".

Re: [lace-chat] Spam

2004-06-10 Thread Avital
Yvonne and others,

Does your address appear on any Web pages? One of my addresses, my old
university address, was grabbed by spammers from LaRae's Locate-a-Lacemaker
page. I didn't know it was there as a clickable link (those are very easy
for spammers to grab automatically), but when I found it I asked LaRae to
replace it with my Yahoo account, where I don't care about the spam because
it goes straight into a "bulk mail" folder and then into trash. That account
does get spam like you describe, targeted at lacemakers.

Also, do you belong to a guild or fiber-related organization? Some guild
sites put up their members addresses and don't tell them about it. That can
also lead to spam if the Web designer doesn't insert spaces or other
spam-foiling things to disguise the address.

On the topic of avoiding general spam, I strongly recommend that everyone
get a yahoo account to use when you need to provide your e-mail address for
some reason. Try not to use your personal home account for anything but
personal mail and trusted lists. For registering for downloads, registering
to read on-line newsletters, filling out surveys, playing games, use an
address that you don't care about. Remember to check it from time to time
and throw out all the junk. Also, if you register for a site and they have
to send you a password, use your "throwaway" account and remember to check
it for the automatic e-mail they send you.

I should add that one should be cautious when writing to businesses and
strangers. A friend of mine wrote to Leisure Arts to find a place where she
could buy some of their patterns. She never got a reply, but she noticed a
significant increase in craft-related spam.

Best wishes,
