I notice that whilst I have been away nobody has answered your query,
and I regret I am unble to either. I have just imported two files, one
generated by Legacy and the other by EasyTree and both imported
without problem. Unfortunately I do not have an FTM GEDCOM.

Legacy Help suggests the following:

If you find, after Legacy analyzes the file, that there are fewer
individuals and marriages in the file than you were expecting
(oftentimes zero), you can follow this procedure:

Right-click on the Start the Import button. A popup message appears
asking: Re-analyze this file using special binary method?
Click Yes. The GEDCOM file will then be re-analyzed and the counts
should then be correct.

Click Start the Import (left-click) to import the file.

I guess that this pop-up is not appearing for you. Two things which
you may like to look at: Click on the customise and see if there are
any unrecognised codes, and open the GEDCOM in Notepad, or similar,
and see if the details are actually present in the GEDOM (and not just
the headers).

Someone with more knowledge of FTM than I have may be able to help you
further.

Subject: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM import problem

Wondering if someone could help me. A cousin sent me a GEDCOM
file from his Family tree maker , from FTW file. When I try to
import into my Legacy 7 system, it analyzes all 2,000 entries, but
when I push the import button it only loads one entry. What gives.
I've tried it several times and the same thing happens.

Re: [LegacyUG] Charting

2009-10-28 Thread John Magyari
The Chart you are describing is sometimes referred to as a "Blood
relationship chart", which is great to show families, children and to
have at family reunions. I've created several of these for reunions and
family members. And also find that most of my family members seem to
spend more time looking at this type a chart to see who they are related
to vs just their own ancestry tree.

Sometimes people also want to print an "All-In-One Chart" which would
include everybody you've recorded in your database.
With large databases this is sometimes unpractical because it's just to
big.

What I do with All-In-One Charts is create subset databases:
For example I'll tag a branch of a tree and then tag people I'm not sure
if connected but possibly, create a gedcom. Then create an All-In-One
Chart. This has been helpful when trying to get others to view the
section I'm working and I find it very helpful for myself.

Of the charts I use I find I use the above "All-In-One" and via a
"All-In-One" chart create a "Blood Relationship Charts" for about 65% of
all charts I create.

Of the 8 or 9 different packages I've tried in the past only one company
seems to do a very good job in this area. Currently we do not have
these Chart Types in Legacy.

Another type of Chart I've been requested to do is an Hour Glass Chart
based on all Children as the center node

Ex. 2 Sisters and 1 Brother all married
Create an Hour glass Chart that includes all Ancestors of above 3
Children and their spouses and then the direct descendants of the 3
children.

A few people have asked for their Charts to be created with their a Step
Parent vs their biological parent who skipped out of their lives (that
they don't even care about the skipped out biological parent). An
All-In-One Chart here is great because you can just delete the unwanted
Biological Parent Tree limb (person and their ancestors) from the Chart
and your left with the functional Family. The Family Chart

Most programs on the market limit their charts to biological ancestors
and descendants and their spouses.
Based on human nature I would imagine that sometimes a few listed in
genealogical databases as biological parents are in fact only the
married parents.

Charts are great when you can create the kinds of charts "YOU" want to
create.

I created a Chart to show my mom of all her relatives, she has help me
collect info over the last 5 years. The chart ended up being 6 feet high
and 20 feet long. She had no idea that we had collected so much info.

[LegacyUG] Charts For Requesting Info

2009-10-17 Thread John Magyari
I'd like to create a chart similar to the following, so I can forward it
on to have others fill in missing blanks.
I'd like to be able to specify how many generations to create, when
individuals are not in DB create placeholders for them with categories,
and have categories displayed with known and unknown info.
If info is known in Legacy Fill in the info, if not Leave a blank space
behind Category Field
If we can not currently do this in Legacy, is there a 3rd party app if
gedcom is imported to that will create this type of chart?

Re: [LegacyUG] Forms Need to know where to set location

2009-10-12 Thread John Magyari

Thank you both Ron and Mike,

I've moved things around so much in the past on my 5 Terabytes and
partitions, I thought I may have messed things up.

I remembered so many directories could be set via Options-> Customize ->
Locations there was not an option there,

I figured it out myself about 5 minutes before I received Mike's email,
and I initally forgot to click on browse and later saw some mention of
this in the help.

Initially there was nothing displayed at the bottom of the window as the
help suggests as to the current path, mine was blank.

All my files were in the directory structure already and via browse I
was able to get things back to normal.

We probably need to add this to the Locations page and any other setable
directories to be constant with human interface guidelines. Maybe an
enhancement request.

thanks,
john

Go back to your Forms Centre and click the Browse... button. From

Mike,

For some users nothing appears at all so one can't navigate - it was

Ron Ferguson

I know! We see the query often enough. But some people may
inadvertently have lost or corrupted their settings and hadn't
realised that the way to get their forms back was through the
Browse... button.

As a more permanent solution, Millennia could create a ZIP file
containing the current form files, and allow people to download them
if they want them. Then, the forms can be removed from the main Legacy
installation file. A small reduction of bloat, but a move towards a
more structured and compartmentalised program.

[LegacyUG] Adding Pictures Source, Event, Step 2 Source, Step 3 Source jpg image and Notes Everywhere or only once

2009-02-23 Thread John Magyari

Legacy 7

I'm wondering where to add pictures, notes during entering/sourcing process.

I have an image of 1900 Census for Male1 and Wife1
I've copied infonotes into notepad to add into Legacy
I have a jpg of image.

I'll also use the source writer to document scanned Census image from
Microfilm.

1) Would you attach this picture to all, some or just one place?
To Individual Male 1
To Event
On Step 2 To Source Multimedia Section
On Step 3 Source Multimedia Section

2) Where would one place the infonotes from the Census
To Event
On Step 2 To Source Text Comments Section
On Step 3 Source Text Comments Section

Then I would add his wife, dito

Seems like this same image might get add to 4 different sections, and
notes to 3 different, but maybe it should be only added one or more places.

[LegacyUG] Pictures - Legacy Reports, Charting, Web and TNG

2009-02-11 Thread John Magyari

I use Legacy 7 Deluxe

I've collected a number of pictures from
Ancestry
   Shipping Manifest ( 200kb to 1.5meg)
Census (most are jpgs 150kb to 2meg)
   WW Cards
EllisIsland
Scans of microfilm from LDS (most are tiffs 3meg to 8meg in size)
Family Documents
Family Pictures

Some are Tiffs, some JPG

Is there a recommended format and SIZE (or some other measurement) for
saving pictures so they can be used in Legacy for reports (PDF and
word), Legacy web generation, Legacy charting, I am to also looking at
their use with TNG web?

Should they be saved in multiple formats depending on their use?

Many of my pictures were originally saved in tiff so if printed they
would have a better chance of clarity, but now I'm hoping some will
share their experience of best ways to store images for multiple uses.
(Genealogy Websites, Reports, etc.)

For Websites do you create multiple sizes Thumbnail, Small, Med, Full
resolution, if so do how do you link all to Legacy internally?

Is this topic discussed on one of the Legacy CD sets in detail?

Do you look at height x width x resolution, or height pixel x width
pixel, total size, something else?

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3167

2008-08-14 Thread John Magyari

Syble,

The next time the error occurs (hopefully you woun't see it again)
knowing exactly the steps occur before the problem happens will allow
others to try to reproduce what you are seeing.

For example in another thread it is reported that
if one
1) If You Click on "Add or Edit Source Cititations" Icon (appears as a
book icon) in the Individual Information window

2) Click on "Add A New Source" icon
3) Click on "Cancel"
4) Click on "Cite a Master Source" icon
you will get "Run-time error 3167" Record is deleted and the application
will disappear.
I can reproduce the above 4 steps and it always results in the same
message and aborted application.
If this is what causing your problem you'll have to wait for another
release because it's a bug.

But if you are doing something else, understanding exactly what you are
doing preceeding the event can provide information to tohers to help to
point you in the right direction. The sooner others can reproduce what
you are seeing, the sooner it possibly get fixed. Knowing the
preceeding steps is very very helpful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Understanding USA 4 Field Locations and Geocoding at the address Level

2008-08-10 Thread John Magyari
If Legacy has 9 Positions in the Location Field then the designers must
done this for a reason. I'm having trouble seeing/understanding this in
documentation or help.

It seems logical to me that position 9 should be used for the category
that is the least specific ( I would assume that the Country is usually
the least specific category, except for those limiting their research to
one Country only), and all lower positions should become more specific
if known.
Even with a 4 position system, if one starts using position 4 for
Country, it seems to be limiting in the future if one decides they
might want to document locations with more precise information in the
future.

Is there any negative implications if one uses position 9 for Country vs
using Position 4?

Is there any negative implications if one uses a location system larger
than 4 positions?

I guess for those who only use 4 Positions then one can see all
Individuals that have a common city.
But would one only use a system of 3 Positions if one wanted to see all
locations that share the same County, or a 2 position system to be able
to see all who share the same State?

Ideally it would be nice to print our reports at any level of positions
and not limit it to only a Report based on the number of positions being
used. (All using same State, using same house)

Is there a way to print out a report to show
a) All that lived on the same Street or
b) All those that might have lived in the same House
c) All that Live in the Same County
if you use a 4 Position system?

I have approximately 10,000 events that I'd like to import, 80% have
location information detailed to the Address#/Street level and 20%
detailed to the City level.

It would be great to then allow Legacy VE to geocode these events.

I'd like to implement a system so I don't have go back and redo
everything in the near future.

Actually, Paul, if one sets the Location List to read from right to left then
it's quite easy to manage the locations when the full address is included in

Over the past month or so, even excluding mapping, we have seen many instances
of users having different problems, many relating directly or indirectly to
searching, because they rigidly stick to the 4 field format.

Just my view!

John;

I use the 4 position address in the MASTER source list to identify the city
etc... then in the individual DETAILS portion for that person, I place the
remaining address information. Organizing the master source in this manner
allows me to find all the relatives that live in a city.
I then add an ADDRESS EVENT under the particular person to show the exact
location of where that person lives which would include the street number, name
and city location. With a data base coming up to 20 thousand people, I think
using the MASTER source list for an address book would be way too cumbersome to
keep track of my relatives.
Example of the EVENT output:
Residence, 176 Aberfoyle Avenue, 1950-1975 - Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario,
Canada
That is one example of how I use Legacy to my advantage. To each his own
though...

Thank you,
Paul Croteau

In most of the help, pdfs and videos it is implied to consider using
only 4 of the 9 positions for USA.
And to use position 1-4.
City - Position 1
County - Position 2
State - Position 3
Country - Position 4

1) With this trend how would anyone ever use the remaining fields for
positions 5 - 9 if you use positions 1-4 for city through Country?
It appears that lower position numbers give more precise location
information.

2) Wouldn't it be better to use positions 6 -9 instead of 1-4 for USA
Addresses?
City - Position 6
County - Position 7
State - Position 8
Country - Position 9

This would allow the other lower positions to be used for more detailed
location information.

[LegacyUG] Understanding USA 4 Field Locations and Geocoding at the address Level

2008-08-09 Thread John Magyari

In most of the help, pdfs and videos it is implied to consider using
only 4 of the 9 positions for USA.
And to use position 1-4.
City - Position 1
County - Position 2
State - Position 3
Country - Position 4

1) With this trend how would anyone ever use the remaining fields for
positions 5 - 9 if you use positions 1-4 for city through Country?
It appears that lower position numbers give more precise location
information.

2) Wouldn't it be better to use positions 6 -9 instead of 1-4 for USA
Addresses?
City - Position 6
County - Position 7
State - Position 8
Country - Position 9

This would allow the other lower positions to be used for more detailed
location information.

3) Legacy VE only uses the location field when determining
latitude/longitude Geocoding information and does not use information
entered in the Address Information Window. If positions 6-9 were used
for City, County, State, Country

then

position 5 could be used for the street name
position 4 could be used for the house # or address number of a
cemetery/hospital/residence/event

When this method is used Legacy VE geocodes at the address level giving
more precise latitude/longitude information.
I've tested this and for many USA address and the geocoding gives a good
coding for longitude/latitude at an address level.
VE also appears to do a quicker job of Geocoding if the County is left
blank.

Are others using methods other than the Position 1-4 USA method and also
how are non-USA Legacy users approached this as well?

4) If so could you share how you have you system set up?

Low Position->(Position 1, Position 2, Position 3, Position 4, Position
5, Position 6, Position 7, Position 8, Position 9)
Low Position->(Position 1, Room, Apt # or Cometary Plot #, Address #,
Street Name, City, County, State, Country)

5) Where can one change the Generic Labels Position 1 - Position 9 to
descriptors such as Apt # or Cemetery Plot #, Address #, Street Name,
City, County, State, Country?

[LegacyUG] Alternate Names Ancestry.com and US Census

2008-08-07 Thread John Magyari

While searching for my Grandfather 1920 Census via ancestry.com
ancestry had my grandfather's surname indexed Mazzari, with a Yellow
triangle next to it indicating other possible names Maggard

When I look at the original it is correctly spelled
Magyari

Since the original image has it spelled correctly, but a search via
ancestry, com has it indexed via Mazzari and Maggard (index does NOT have
Magyari) which are incorrect transcriptions, but in ancestry's index.

1) How would you place this info in Legacy, so others could potential
find in future?

a) AKAs Mazzari and Maggard ??
b) just in notes?

2) I run into a similar issue with the 1910 Census
here the index has it written incorrectly
Magdyar
I would assume here I really would use a AKA, correct???

thanks,
jdm

Using either IE6 or IE7 seems to give same performance to me. I don't

IE7 and mapping is a cool feature on Rev 7.

Why don't you load IE7, and try it, you can remove it if it affects
you machine and go back to the old IE6 if you have to. You'll probably
have no problems with IE7.

[LegacyUG] How to enter a Marriage Location or Residence Place, so it correctly maps in Legacy via (Virtual Earth)?

2008-07-26 Thread John Magyari
I need to clear up some entries and hope to clean up some of my location
fields.
Ideally I'd like then to to use the new Virtual Earth to get as exact of
a GPS location as possible depending on the information I've entered.

In the past most of my addresses were entered
City, County, State, Country
Location1, Location2, Location3, Location4
now I have many addresses with Zip Code, Street Address, Location (IE
Church Name, etc), Location within Location (IE A certain Chapel)

1) Do you have any recommendations?

For Example I'd like to enter the following
Main Chapel, The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, 2325 Union
Street, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, 94123, USA

Room, Church, Address, City, County, State, Zip, Country

I entered the same address a variety of ways to see what Legacy (Virtual
Earth) Mapping would turn up
I created a Person and then added the following to Event/Fact to
multiple Residence Categories and place the addresses in the Place Field.

Addresses that found N374645.0353 W1222512.175 Generic SF Location
San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA
San Francisco, , CA, USA
***A) San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA, 2325 Union Street
San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA, 2325 Union Street, The Episcopal
Church of St. Mary the Virgin

Addresses that found N374659.432 W1222459.782
San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA, 2325 Union Street, The Episcopal
Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Main Chapel

Addresses that found N374747.518 W1222615.367
CORRECT

***B) San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, 2325 Union Street
2325 Union Street, San Francisco, CA, 94123, USA
2325 Union Street, San Francisco, CA, 94123

Addresses that found N374630 W1222506 Not sure of why this got
mapped this way

The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, San Francisco, CA, USA

2) When entering a location in the marriage section I don't see a +
Address option like I do for the Born, Chr, Died, Buried

Should it be an option here?

3) I also don't see the + Option for Events/Facts for the Place Field
Should it be an option here?

4) When you look at ***A vs ***B, it appears that if I use the address
for location4 vs using the Country I will get a correct GEO Coding

Then I need to start seeing how I can utilize the other fields for info
on some of my European addresses.

Re: [LegacyUG] PDF is not correct size and missing some borders

So it appears that maybe your page is to small also if you selected 8.5
x 11.

With my smaller image part of the border was missing since I selected to
have a page border as well

Here's better instructions to create a page border to see if it missing
on your printed image.

Choose the Appearance Tab
Select Page Icon (4th from left)
Make sure No Page Border does NOT have a Check
and select any border type

than create a Chart that is only one page and see if the border is missing.

Strange, I can't find any trace of it (and Vista is quite good at
managing such detail).

I did some "googling around" and error 3260 in the context of MS
Access and
VB (which is how Legacy is built) is a problem regarding record
locking in

the database. So, I think it is a bug somewhere and nothing we can cure
ourselves. I get the problem trying to do "set relationships" from one
machine where the database is on another.

I've solved it (for the moment). I noticed that one of the folders
under C:\Legacy was shared
and after a bit of searching I found it and switched it off. (How this
got there I don't know but must have been carried over when I
transferred settings from my XP machine to the new Vista laptop). So I
can now use the Potential Problems feature again (although I have
noticed that the problem reappears sometimes if I try to use an
existing PP list).

I think you need to wait until the whole team is back from the cruise
and

chase Support

Indeed. I didn't realise they were away on the cruise. I originally
posted the issue to them in early June when I was still using my XP
machine and not getting a response surprises me. Support has always
been good in the past but they seem to have been overwhelmed by the
success of V7.

Cheers

Will

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship Calculator

2008-06-30 Thread John Magyari
If you spouse has father, mother, aunt, uncle, cousin, nephew, niece,
whatever as blood relationships,
Then to you if you are married add "-in-law" to end and they are
non-blood relationships.

If someone is married to one of your blood relationships and they are
not a blood relationship then add appropriate

spouse prefix
"husband of" or
"wife of".

You would use 7C 6R in-law about as much as your spouse would use 7C 6R,
not to often, but if it came up the description would fit.

Personally I would expect Legacy to handle mother-father-brother and

as that is "relationship names" that we do have and use. Are we also
going to have

7C 6R in-law?

Maybe so, but Legacy does return in-law relationships, so it should
return the so-called uncle-in-law relationship. I still think that
"no relationship" is wrong.

So what is the verdict? Is it a bug or not?
Seems to me that even if my uncle is calculated as the husband of my
aunt, he is still my uncle and should be listed as such. And I should
be calculated as his nephew as well as my aunt's nephew or at least as
the nephew of my aunt's husband.
My wife's parents are not actually related to me either, but they are
calculated as in-laws.

[LegacyUG] Locations Order Input

2008-06-29 Thread John Magyari

Legacy 7 Deluxe

I noticed that one can set nine fields for locations

I'd like to be able to set
Loc1, Loc2, Loc3, Loc4, Loc5, Loc6, Loc7, Loc8, Loc9
with Country, State, County, City, Street, Address#, Apt#, Room, Bed #

1) How would I set the above parameters in the proper order??

A) Country, State, County, City, Street, Address#, Apt#, Room, Bed #
or
B ) Bed #, Room, Apt#, Address#, Street, City , County, State, Country
or
C) Some other logically way

and then based on known info input subsets of above.

When I go to the Master Location and try to do sort
it appears it wants
LOC4 to be Country
LOC3 to be State
LOC2 to be County
LOC1 to be City

I want it so I can use all nine fields if known and then to be able to
using MAPPING

2) Can I specify for mapping use all locations except Apt#, Room, Bed of
what is know?

The reason for a relationship in either direction is because of a common

Re: [LegacyUG] LG7 and Virtual Earth

2008-06-24 Thread John Magyari
Sometimes when I have not been able to uninstall via Control Panel
Add/Remove.
This problem was related for me when I had several different
installations on my machine.

I have been able to uninstall, when I go to installation directory and
run unwise.exe.
Unwise.exe will use the install.log file in the same folder, where
sometimes the process via Control Panel has problems locating the
correct install.log file.

Good detective work on your Error 53, I need to refer to the log file
you mentioned more myself.

set to True. Enter a value in this field. - Error saving Marriage.
Saturday, June 21, 2008Error 53: File not found - Error creating

There are a lot more of the Error53 lines (as many times as I tried).

I also looked for the install.log file and find that it is in the
Legacy directory (in which installed). I can attach my install file if
that is allowed and if it will help solve my problems, which are now 2:

1. Cannot uninstall
2. Cannot use VE

A simple google of the phrase "Error 53: File not found" gives the
answer as the first choice:
--

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q178489/

SYMPTOMS
The following error message displays when you attempt to call a
function in a dynamic-link library (DLL) file from Visual Basic:

Error 53 "File Not Found"

The error message occurs at the function call statement.

CAUSE
This message occurs when Windows is unable to load the specified DLL,
particularly if the DLL has not been saved at the specified location.
It will also occur if the dependency files required by the DLL file
are not installed in the computer.

RESOLUTION
Install the dependency files required by the DLL file.
--

Basically you are missing a DLL file (Dynamic Link Library).

There is no entry on the Legacy site for Error 53.
If you did any "house cleaning" on your computer you may have moved or
deleted the required file. You may need to un-install and re-install
Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping and IE7

2008-06-24 Thread John Magyari
Mapping makes system calls that are available with IE7 to allow Virtual
Earth to display.

It doesn't make any difference what default browser you use for mapping
function, mapping needs to interface directly via OS to IE7 interface
and is not looking to see what default browser you use.

If you current version of IE is 6,5,4,3,2,1 then you will have to update
to currently released version of IE7 if you wish to use mapping.

Re: [LegacyUG] Online download of Legacy 7 Question:

2008-06-22 Thread John Magyari
When every you overwrite any file, with any program, the previous files
are replaced by the new ones.

Legacy installs to C:\Legacy by default.

If you want to keep old version(s) of Legacy and have new one just
install Legacy7 somewhere else like

c:\legacy7

then if you want to keep you old Database Files for Ver 5.
Copy the old version 5 files(usually located in "C:\legacy\data" into
the new Legacy7 Location\data

If you open database files with new version once converted previous
versions will no longer be able to access them. This is how most
programs work.

Re: [LegacyUG] Resizing Legacy charts - suggestion

2008-06-22 Thread John Magyari

A scaling or resizing option is not currently available.

You could Publish you chart to a jpg, tiff. Open with a graphics
program. Scale to a smaller image and canvas size depending on how many
pages (1 or more) you wanted to use for you test print review.

Probably more importantly
The scaling will also apply to maximizing a chart to fully take
advantage of the printed image based on the roll paper being used.

If scaling or resizing is important you might want to submit it via

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp

as an enhancement.

jdm

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Since the charts produced by Legacy Charting are designed to be
wallcharts if one elects to print them on a regular printer, they will

It would be nice if it was possible to resize these charts so that
they print on a single sheet of paper. This would allow us to look at
them in that format and see if we wish to fiddle with them further
before sending them out for professional printing. I suppose that one
could achieve something similar by resizing all the components and
fonts, but that is impractical. It would be nice if Legacy Charting
permitted an option to "fit to page" that is available in many graphic
programs.

Presently, one work around might be to publish the chart as a jpg file
which can then be printed using a graphic program's "fit to page"
option, but it would be nicer if the option to print in that manner
was available from Charting itself.

When you went to Windows Task Manager

What was the Status of Legacy in the Applications TAB was it Running,
Not Responsive, something else?

In the processes Tab was Legacy still using CPU Cycles, if so how much?

In the processes Tab what was the memory usage for Legacy? was it
gradually increasing as you watched?
You can click on the top of the different categories to see what
processes are consumed the most.

Were any error messages placed in your event Viewer
Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Event Viewer-> Application

The above can sometimes give an indication of what's going wrong, before
killing a process(s)

Thanks for the follow-up Rich. I cut and pasted your "Ølstøren" into a location in my Legacy db and it displayed correctly. So I next looked at the Character Map (via the ribbon) and both of those "O" characters with the slash were already in the Legacy character map.

In my case, the special letters that are already in the character map appear fine, the
ones that do not appear in the map are displayed as a "?". I am only missing 5
letters that I need.

I have not seen a Legacy response to this question yet.

Thinking about what I have done, I suspect that because I have the alphabetic list set to Swedish, so all the extra letters/names/places sort properly in ALL lists, it may be a result of the above mentioned setting. I remember having done it, but forgot what I did to accomplish this. Since Swedish is in the available languages for reports, I don't know if that affects anything. Also, I had originally used the Alt- to create the previous mentioned note-list. My characters have always printed on Legacy reports. Here is an example of a name.
'Ølstøren' Some servers may change this now. What should show up is the Norwegian character O with a slash through it, 1 capital, 1 small. This may be a good test.

Great if you want exact location information for house, cemetery,

Most people should be discouraged from doing this with the Legacy
Database or any other databases other Program use to store data, it's
like editing your Registry.
If you do or try, unless you know what you're doing, and if the database
becomes non functional, then you start from scratch.

For those who are doing it today with Rev 6, it's the same MS database
with new tables/data.

Re: [LegacyUG] IE7 Required (Trouble)

2008-05-24 Thread John Magyari

Complaining about IE7.

Sounds like your looking for the CPM operating system, it was much more
stable then Bill Gates stuff at the time.

Relatively resistant to new Viruses as well.
And most versions work with 10" diskettes, now that's something you'll
never get with Vista or XP.

The days before IE7 sometimes one forgets what it was like.

IE7 been out since Oct 2006, report you dislikes to Microsoft about
their problems. IE8 is already out.

Bill's guy's are currently working on IE9 which is probably frozen for
new features, IE10 working on coding, and IE11 on the drawing board.
Give Bill a call, I'm sure he'd love to hear your comments, you'll need
a credit card unless you currently have a service contract.

My 3 and 6 year old grand children are using IE7 on their XP systems,
I'll check to see their having any issues with it.

Wynthner wrote:

I've read that Internet Explorer is required for some of the new Legacy
features. If you have one of several Norton products and use IE7 to access
Ancestry.com, either directly or via Legacy, you may find screens or digital
images freezing or refusing to load or shut down.. This is not a Legacy
problem but is a conflict between IE7 and Norton. If you have a combination
of IE7 and a Norton product and notice these problems, they can most easily
be corrected via an online chat with Norton/Symantec.

Hope this may help someone and avoid complaints to the LUG list.

Re: [LegacyUG] All in One Report.

2008-05-24 Thread John Magyari

What versions of FTM and PAF programs are you referring to?
And are you referring to Charts or Reports?

My version of FTM2008 the one you pay for doesn't have it in it.
Does you friend have a free version that has it?, I didn't think they
had a free version.

FTM 2008 has the following from the help file
The list below displays the categories and reports available.
Person Reports
Relationship Reports
Place Reports
Media Reports
Source Reports
Books

The list below displays the categories and charts available. Click a
chart for a description of the chart and directions on how to format the
chart.

Pedigree Chart
Descendant Chart
Relationship Chart

PAF Charting Companion 5.2 the one you pay for doesn't have All-In-One
Charts, is there a free version that does?

The Charts I produce in Legacy to me look much better than the one I can
produce in my FTM2008 version and *PAF Companion 5.2.* But then again
every program does things differently.

Please contact your friend and find out what free versions he's using to
accomplish this I'd like to try them myself.
Also ask your friend to compare the charts he is able to do today with
his FTM and PAF versions that I don't have with LegacyCharting.
I assume he's already using the free demo offered by Legacy for
charting, it would be interesting to hear his feedback

http://www.legacycharting.com/

Have him send in new feature or enhancement requests to
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp

some of the suggestions I've made in the past to the link above have
already be included in the new Legacy Release.

Like most companies if they get enough requests for the same feature,
they seriously consider it for future releases over those they get one
or 2 requests for.

Look for to seeing what version your friend is using if he could send
links that would be great.

Colin Liddell wrote:
I have a friend to whom I recommended Legacy, I suggested he use the

After looking at the type of reports available in Legacy compared to
FTM and PAF he found he could not replicate the All in One Report in
the free version of Legacy that is available in FTM .
His question was, is it possible to do this in the De Luxe version and
if so, how?

I tried to do this in my De Luxe version and was not successful, I
obviously don't know enough about the program yet, being a very new
user.{;-).

Can anyone tell me how to make an All in One report in Legacy similar
to the one in FTM.

I look forward to any suggestions from this very knowledgeable group.

I have now checked the PDFs from both a Legacy Descendant Chart and Legacy Charting. In
the case of the latter I only created enough generations for it to fit on one page (one
as it happens). In the Legacy Charting Set-up I set it to "fit page" (A4) and
similarly set the Legacy Descendant Chart to A4.

Both PDFs were the same size (8.22x11.65 for Legacy Desc. Chart and 8.26x11.69
Legacy Charting)

However when I used a border on the Legacy Charting PDF the right-hand border
and the bottom border were cut off. Without the border it looked OK and was
still the same size as the other PDF.

It looks like they have solved the main problem, in that previous large chunks
of the charts were being cut off, but not quite got the borders right yet.

I then created several charts in Legacy Charting as PDFs.

I'd like to send out PDFs for family members to print themselves.

When I inserted the Charts into my Ancestor Book PDF, I noticed that the size
of the chart PDF pages were 8 x 10.67 inches and the Legacy Pages are 8.5 x 11
inches.

Also the charts seem to have a margin around the top and left hand size, but
seem to be missing margins from the bottom and right hand side, is this
because the pages created 8 x 10.67 inches are to small?

Is there something I'm suppose to set to get 8.5 x 11 inch pages in Legacy
Charting?

Thanks,

individual basis after asking the question "Do I want this name to be
the one used in narratives?" If yes - it has to be a quoted name. If
no - it's an AKA.

I think the difference is between a name that is always or mostly used
by everyoneor almost everyone (familiar) as opposed to a name that is
used by a few (nickname).

For example: My mother was known as Joyce. This was her third given
name so it would be wrong to call it a nickname but to have it used in
narrative it must be added as a Quoted Name.
Her school friends called her "T". All her life she received letters
from some which began "Dear T".

This is a nickname that I have in the AKAs.

Her brother was known as Roy. This wasn't one of his given names so a
true nickname but everyone knew him as Roy all his life - so it's
entered as a Quoted Name.
Another example: My nephew Richard is mostly known as Richard. However
many of his cousins call him "Wretched" and he still signs himself
"Wretched" in some situations (and so he was for a short time in his
adolescence ;-) but not now as a father of 4). I've entered it as an
AKA as it's not in general use - however I wouldn't want to ignore it
as it's there in letters and cards.

When looking at the help it seems to imply to use AKA for Nicknames
and use double quotes for familiar names.

I guess I've always thought a familiar name was a nickname.

I'm going to go back and start using double quotes for familiar names.

1) What's the difference between a familiar name and a nick name?

From Help section:

Given

Enter all the given names for the individual. This includes the
first name and all middle names. Don't include nicknames or
alternate names which should be entered by clicking on the icon to
the right of the Surname field. Given names can be up to 120
characters long.

You can enter a "familiar" name as part of the given names by
enclosing it in quotes. For example, Margaret "Peggy" Ann. This
familiar name can then be used in narrative paragraphs when a book
report is generated. (See the Use Quoted Names for Narratives topic
in the Format tab section of Report Options.)

I think it's always best to enter using the conventions of the program
rather than making your own.

If you use Privacy brackets for including or excluding nicknames, do
you always print the privacy brackets? If you don't, then how do
people know which name is a Nickname rather than one of the Given names?

And what do you do with other Private material? You may want to
include Nicknames but not everything else you've marked as private
with Privacy brackets.

I'd like them to check the info I have on them and get any additional

Ideally I'd like them to send me back any info in gedcom or Legacy

Does any one have any recommendations of what programs I can recommend

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting a Legacy file to Access

2008-04-12 Thread John Magyari

Your right in GENViewer u can only sort via one column at a time.

But Genviewer allows you to easily export to a comma, delimited text
file which you can then do sorts on multiple levels with OpenOffice
Excel equivalent.

You don't have to create SQL Querys on multiple tables in the Database
if you use GENViewer. There's 28 tables in the Legacy database, if like
to write SQL queries go for it, if you want the data in one easy to
manipulate spreedsheet, GENViewer can get there for you, with
accidentally messing up the database by going in there directly. I do
it both ways but think for many GENViewer would be easier.

Here's a dump of the columns GENViewer can provide to a spreadsheet
program, hopefully one that's knows how to handle dates which MS Excel
only handles if after 1900.

Index,RIN,User ID,Surname,Given,Full Name,"Surname, Given",Birth
Date,Birth Place,Chr Date,Chr Place,Death Date,Death Place,Burial
Date,Burial Place,Mar Place,Mar Date,Spouse,"Spouse (Last,
First)",Father,"Father (Last, First)",Mother,"Mother (Last,
First)",Relationship,Common Ancestor,"Common Ancestor (L, F)",#Anc,A
Gens,Avg A Gens,#Des,D Gens,Avg D Gens,#Mars,#Pars,#Chds,Age,Mar. Age,F.
Age,M. Age,Sex,AFN,Note,Has Note,Has Source,Has Events,Island
#,Alive,Sur Sdx,Name Sdx,Create Date,Modify Date,Birth/[C]
Date,Birth/[C] Place,Death/[B] Date,Death/[B]
Place,Father/Mother(M)/Spouse(S),"Father/Mother(M)/Spouse(S) (L,
F)","Spouse/Father(F)/Mother(M) (F, L)","Spouse/Father(F)/Mother(M) (L,
F)",LDS,LDS B,LDS B Temple,LDS E,LDS E Temple,LDS SP,LDS SP Temple,LDS
SS,LDS SS Temple

In one to two minutes you can dump your whole database to a comma
delimted text file to sort whatever way u want.

As you can see there's some columns which also tell age, age married, #
ancestors, #children, etc. already calculated as well.

Have you tried looking at your data with genviewer?
Once loaded, it can read your legacy file directly or a gedcom,
select list mode, indicate what columns you want, click on top of
columns to sort by that option.

It has a nice scripting language as well to highlight selected items.
It can also dump all columns to comma delimited text file. (CTRL-C)

here's a link from the Legacy Family site

Excel has problems with dates older than 1900. If you use a
spreadsheet program to look at extracted data use open office instead.

[LegacyUG] Renumbering RINs

2008-04-09 Thread John Magyari

I'm in the process of renumbering RINS

1) Each time I select a record to change a RIN

the BOX Log all changes to a text file is checked

If I previously unchecked this box, I would assume that the next time I
go to make a RIN change the box would not be checked, but it's always
checked when I go to make another change.

Is this happening because I need to change a global parameter somewhere?

2) In fact I wouldn't mind it being the default but each time it is
checked,
but I'm always prompted --->>> Would you like to view the report of the
changes that were made?

Is there a way for me to turn this message off?

3) Is there an easier way than?
Select an Individual
Menu-> Tools  -> Renumber RINs

it would be nice to rick click on an Individual and select Renumber
RINS, to help minimize mouse movement.

thanks,
john

[LegacyUG] Creating Stripped down Gedcoms

2008-04-09 Thread John Magyari
I want to send out info to relatives to have them check what I have so
far on them and descendants is correct and also to see if they can add
additional info.
AT the same time some relatives might not want my complete tree being
sent to everyone and I'd like to have them to concentrate on their own
info as well.

SO I want to create stripped down Gedcoms which contains info focused on

them from my master gedcom file.

Once I have the stripped down gedcoms, I'd like to send them a Self
Generated Gedcom they can view with Genviewer and get them to enter
additional info into Legacy which they can then send back to me.

?
Based on the 4 conditions below
A) Can Genviewer or Legacy 6 create stripped down gedcoms ?
B) Are there any other programs that you are aware of
that has a good scripting language that would let me specify conditions,

then create a gedcom of only those individuals found?

Here's some initial conditions that I would like to do first

1) The first case would be to select an individual and create a gedcom
that would include the individual, all their descendants and TWO
generations of the individuals ancestors.

Similar to using Genviewer and using the Highlighting feature
+Ancestors of 2 Generation
or
+Descendants of 0(Zero) Generations (Which would include all)

I'd like to create a gedcom of the above highlighted by Gedviewer and
the Individual used as a starting point.

2) Same as #1 but include siblings
+Ancestors of 2 Generation
or
+Descendants of 0(Zero) Generations (Which would include all)
or
+Sibling is

3) Create a gedcom for the following:
Individual A and Individual B
Create a Gedcom that shows only those individuals in the ancestor lines
that connect Individual A & Individual B.

ie

Cousin A-> Cousin A's Dad-> Cousin's A's Dad's Mother&Dad
Cousin B-> Cousin B's Mother -> Cousin B's Mother's Mother&Dad
it's possible there may be multiple paths.

This would be similar to Genbox's Convergent Chart which shows the
lineage paths between two or more starting individuals.

But I'm looking to extract those individuals to a gedcom.

4) Same as #3 add siblings

thanks,
john

Basically searching for Descendants by surname is easy but if you exclude

Here my wife's first husband, who she divorced. Why would he be tagged?
Divorced not a spouse, not in any way related to my father.
When I clear and then set the relationship to my father.
This divored husband correctly shows no relationship, in the

2) Would like to be able to select Descendants as described in option 1

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendants - How to Tag

2008-04-02 Thread John Magyari
When I use Genviewer and select an ancestor of mine, lets say on my moms
side.

Then set the filtering to Descendants of
My wife, my father, my brothers wife are not highlighted, nor are any
spouses of anyone else.
Only those starting from the selected individual and those related by
blood are highlighted.

This is what I was trying to figure out in Legacy, how can I create a
tag that shows the same individuals that GenViewer finds.

Genviewer 1.23
Select any individual
Apply Highlighting + Descendants of

All sons and daughters of the selected individual and all children, and
children-children, etc. are highlighted.
No spouses, divorced spouses get highlighted, because they are not
descendants.

John,

There maybe a problem with what you are asking. You say "no spouses", fair enough
it's easy to select the descendants, tag them and then use Search>Find>Detailed Search
and search first for those tagged and by surname. But this excludes the children of the
daughters.

Basically searching for Descendants by surname is easy but if you exclude
spouses then it would ignore the female side. I can see the point about a
spouse's other partners and doubt of this would be a problem to eliminate
(although I haven't thought about it yet) but would appreciate firstly your
answer to my other query.

Sounds like Descendants are those related by blood via the person
selected at the top of the tree.

I'd like to export to gedcom

tagged individuals

Do you know how I can create tags for the following:
1) Descendants - Which I'm looking for those related by blood, (No
Spouses (I guess there are not really descendants), No one not related
via blood (Adopted, etc)

When I select Descendants for my father
Edit -> Tag records -> Descendants

there appears 2 options
a) Descendants (Include all descendants)

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendants - How to Tag

2008-04-02 Thread John Magyari

This goes back to what is the definition of a descendant.

The State Court System in Missouri
defines descendant as
Those persons who are in the blood line of the ancestor; persons who
proceed from a body of another, such as a child, grandchild, etc.

You would be a descendant of your parents.
Your spouse would be a descendant from their parents.
Your children would be descendants form both you and your spouse(being
their parents), and all 4 grandparents.

Your spouse is not a descendant from your parents, only his.

Here's another definition.
Family members that are born to a person and their children.

Back to your question
How does a person get descendants without having a spouse?
Our Republican Vice President, Dick Cheney prefers we don't go here.
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=3205613&page=1
Another example of who is a Descendant
Descendants of Dick Cheney
Certainly both of his daughters Mary and Elizabeth, and all their
children can make this claim.
But Mary Cheney's partner Heather Poe, I just don't think would qualify
as being a descendant of Dick Cheney.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Chart -

2008-04-01 Thread John Magyari
The new program LegacyChart has the ability to generate PDF, BMP, JPG,
PNG, TIFF, PSD images. Are there other types of images you would like
to see that you could use and import into your reports?

Unfortunately most charts are too large to print on a home printer, but
if you want to print on a home printer any of the above images can be
forced to print on a single 8.5x11 inch page.

Most home printers will not allow one to print on 100% of the page and
force a border making it hard to tape multiple pages together and are
designed so consumers will spend a fortune on ink. For most printing
applications you'll save money bringing you pictures and charts to a
professional printer, the professional printers they use sometimes costs
$200,000 and up vs the $200 home printers run, usually when you look at
how much your spending for ink you're better off bringing it to the pros.

G. C. Oliver wrote:

I feel your pain. Sadly legacy Charting is not designed to print Charts on
standard printers. Like all of the others they have concentrated their
efforts on reinventing the wheel pioneered by FTM, TMG and Roots Magic.
I am sure that the chart would look great if printed on a 36" wide format
color printer.
Don't get me wrong I have used Legacy for a number of years even though I
have access to the other big three programs. It is by far the best Genealogy
program for more reasons than I would care to go into. The lack of native
charting has been its big weakness. I just wish that they would/could design
a portion that was centered on producing charts that could be printed on
regular printers (8.5x11,8.5x14, or even 11x17)and inserted into reports,
books etc. This would truly be unique and fill an obvious void in the
market.
Sorry, rant over.

I thought I read somewhere that the new Legacy 7 was/might contain a feature
to chart connected but non-related persons - for example connected by
marriage to distant aunts & uncles. Is this true?

Furthermore, would you be able to say specify more than two people to be
shown on such a chart - for example to be able to chart how myself *AND* a
newly discovered fourth cousin once removed, both connect to my ancient
first cousin seven times removed, all on the one chart.

I can't find such a chart in the new pre-release Legacy 7.0 Charting,
perhaps it will be in the Relationship Calculator print facility in the
actual Legacy 7.0 program itself.

If not, can anyone suggest an add-on program that might achieve this?

TIA

new family file into the charting program so I deleted the old family

How do I get the currently used family file to link from Legacy 6 to

[LegacyUG] Primary Surname and AKA Names, Charts, same person different spellings

2008-03-24 Thread John Magyari
Some of my ancestors came from the Lemko region of the Carpathian
Mountains in Austria Hungary, and were Greek Catholics ?

When reviewing the Church records (written Polish/Latin/Kinda of
Combinations of Something) Births, Deaths, Marriages for a period of
even 20 years, I might find 5 different spellings in the church records
for Surnames and Given names of the same individual (based on recorded
marriage and children's birth records, and then death records)

Ie Surname
Joannes Waranka
Joanes Warjanka
Joinnes Warianka
Jan Waryanka
Joannes Varanka

All same person.

How do others record variations, do you record every variation?

Then how do you decide what name to use as the primary?

In my family over the years some modern day branches have chosen all 5
different branches.

I'm now trying to figure out what name to use as the primary for ancestors.

Then when it comes to charting, It might be nice to include all AKAs.

Depending on what branch of the family tree I might be charting the
different branches might have one of the 5 variations, how would one
notate based on the Charts being printed.

When it comes to Charting depending on who wants what, the ability to
select from any AKA would be WONDERFUL, I currently do not know of any
Charting program that would allow me to change on the fly depending on
the Charts being created.

During some periods of time many ancestors could not read or write
themselves, Church records have spellings all over the place, some not
even close sometimes.

What's are your thoughts?

thanks,
john magyari

In Legacy I set the relationship based on me.

If my mom's mother (my Grandmother) had a son to a previous husband (not
my mom's dad) what should the 1/2 brother of my mom, relationship be to me.

What I'm seeing via Legacy is nothing. Would he be a 1/2 Uncle, Uncle,
maybe not related?

[LegacyUG] Gedcom Export

2008-03-19 Thread John Magyari

Legacy 6.0.0.190

I've been exporting tagged individuals to a Gedcom so I can then import
them into an ALL_IN-ONE-CHART so I compare graphical the selected
changes I've made to my database.

Here's the issue below
Everytime I select

File -> Export To -> Gedcom

all the previous settings I selected are reset to defaults

I find myself having to
click on
[x] Export [[ Private ]] Information
[x] Export Private individual events
[x] Export Private Master events
[x] Export Private Individuals

Then for my Record Selection which was previous set to
All records with an individual tag of 1
and unchecked
[ ] Export all spouses of tagged individuals
[ ] Export all children of tagged individuals
[ ] Export all parents of tagged individuals

Each time I modify the items tagged I find myself having to set
everything back to same way I last Exported a GEDCOM before I can export
it exactly like I did the last time.

How can I get Legacy to remember to keep my last settings until I choose
to either modify them or reset them to defaults?

thanks,
john

[LegacyUG] Adding a brother to oldest known female member (don;t know hersurname) of a tree branch

2007-11-28 Thread John Magyari

1) Question for Legacy User group?

To make things easy to visualize,
Lets say I have a tree with 2 people in it

Daughter Helen Smith with her mother Judy (Don't know her surname)
Judy has a brother Bob (Don;t know his surname) I want to add to the
Legacy Database.

How would you do the following:

If I want to add the brother to a direct line ancestor Judy who is a
female with no parents, I know her first name but not her surname, how
do you do it
a) would you add both a father and mother, just one parent, if so which
one, then add Judy's brother Bob

b) how would you specify given and surnames for the mother and father

2) Question for people who use charting programs?

I now want to print out an ancestor tree for Judy that includes only
ancestors who I have names for

how would I do this, I'm assuming in example 1, I have to use some type
of place holder(father, mother, both; who I don't know any names) so I
can add Judy's brother Bob to the database.

Would you just specify create ancestor tree for Judy, and after it's
created delete from the chart any nodes that don't have names?

[LegacyUG] Legacy Training CD's just Wonderful

2007-10-14 Thread John Magyari
I'm always trying to save money and initially did not purchase the
Training CDs and manual. I wish I would have made the small investment
sooner. I recently purchased the Vol 1 and manual and will soon be
purchasing the other CDs. I'm now doing many things I was unaware of,
and some things that I thought I was doing correctly, I'm now doing more
efficiently. Yes I could spend hours trying to figure everything out by
trial and error, but in the long run purchasing the CDs is going to
cost me much less in time, energy and money than learning it on my own.
Most companies don't include instruction Video's with the basic purchase
and most charge a much greater premium for them. Many large companies
sometimes don't take the effort in producing any training videos, due to
the cost and time to produce them. This was the case for several
multi-million dollar software companies I worked for.

Great work Legacy team.

Looking forward to Legacy 7 when it's ready.

Re: [LegacyUG] Renaming Pictures

2007-10-11 Thread John Magyari

Looks like each and every file has to be done individually.

I also noticed each time I select to manually find (Browse for the file
yourself) the 30 files I am sent to the
Default location of family files, instead of Default location of
picture, sound, video files Picture Files which is the directory I would
have thought I would have started in.
It would have been nice if whatever I last changed would have been
remembered including the last file name selected considering I am going
to change the same file 30 times. I have to do 7 clicks each time, only
210 clicks and I got through the whole process.

I have several Census files that I'd like to rename associated with many
individuals, unfortunately my naming convents were not thought out when
I first started, maybe I'll wait until Version 7 comes out and see if
there is possibly a Master List associated with pictures.
If there was a crc was associated with each of the images, then if files
were renamed the first attempt in location could be to associate old
name with new name if CRCs are identical.

thanks,
john

You can redirect Legacy to a file with a changed name this way:

Rename the file. Then go to Options, Customise, Locations and click
on Test All Multimedia Paths...

When the program discovers it can't file the picture by the old
filename you will be offered several options, including Browse for the
File Yourself. Click on this and browse for the file with the new
filename and select it and click Open.

Legacy will then ask you if you want to use this new filename and you
click yes.

I don't know if Legacy will then automatically associate that new
filename with *all* instances of the old one or not. If it doesn't,
you will find the correct folder opens each time you click Browse for
the File Yourself so it is very quick to find renamed file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Chart printing

2007-09-13 Thread John Magyari
For a Family Reunion's it's great to be able to print an All-In-One
Chart which contains a subset of your complete database.

First create a gedcom which is a subset of your database. (This is the
hardest part, selecting the right multiple ancestors, and selecting
them and their descendants.)

Then use Genbox or Family Tree Maker to create a tree with everyone
included. An All-In-One Chart

It's great to see a tree of ancestors for those attending a family reunion.

I like the idea of creating a tree based on blood relatives, it would
sure be less painful than the process I go through now.

A Tree Chart of Blood Relatives would probably be used more often than
the All In One Charts.

I don't think I've seen a Tree Chart of Blood Relatives in anyone's
product out there yet, does anyone know if anyone has done this?

john

Terry Foxcroft wrote:
As well as an everyone chart, a chart with all blood relatives would
be good. Rather than only showing the descendants, it can show
different lines that are beyond value at family reunions. Fortunately
I have access to a colour roll printer at work.

In Generations I printed one out for a family reunion, starting at my
wife (it was here family).

If I had only done ancestor chart, only her direct line would be
shown. I could have done descendant charts to get everyone, but then I
would have to get charts for all her descendants - a huge duplication
of effor. An all blood relations chart was fantastic.

Not many programmes have this, and the ones that do can be clunky.

Foxy - putting my bid in for an all blood relations chart.

Original Message Follows

I don't think most people would ever want to print a chart with
everyone in

their database.. I for one have over 30,000 people in my database and a
chart for everyone would probably be a block long - how do you print that
and what would you do with it if you had it?

Most people will probably only print a few generations of ancestors
and/or
descendants, say 5 to 10 and place them in a frame to hang on the
wall. If

I would try to print say 15 generations of all ancestors, my chart would
probably exceed 100 pages. Most fan type charts for practical
purposes are
normally limited by the user to about 5-7 generations, otherwise, you
cannot

read the print or it gets too large to print economically.

You might want to print a direct line ancestry chart which if you
could get
5 generations per page, then a 25 generation ancestry chart would only
be 5
pages - that would be ok. I have printed out over 100 generations
like that

and it is basically 2 people per generation.

In Legacy 6, you can create a compact form of ancestors charts (Ancestor
Chart) that is very useful for determining what lines of ancestors
that you
need to do more research on. You can start with the youngest person
in your
database for your family and create say 15 generations -- preview it
first
before you sent it to a printer - you may not want to print that many
pages.

I would suggest you try that 1st and see if that meets your needs.
