[LegacyUG] Timelines

2008-11-24 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
In the thread on "America", one poster proferred that he was going to get
some genealogy history or timelines to add to his genealogy materials. For
those of you who have used/made timelines, how does one go about creating
customized timelines? How do you import them into Legacy?

I think others have mentioned they used historical background materials when
creating reports. Has anyone used something other than an event to
incorporate this type of material? If so, how have you done it?

[LegacyUG] Timelines

2006-12-19 Thread Heather Stovold

I've just started playing with the prepared Timelines

Is there anyplace to go find new ones that people have compiled?

Also - I noticed the Canadian Census one that comes with it doesn't have all
the census's. I'm showing the timeline for my ancestor (limit to his
lifetime...) Be was born 1825, died 1892 And the first census listed
is 1871. But I have notes from the 1861 census, and It seems to me there
was a 1851 and maybe an 1841 census too?

[LegacyUG] Timelines

2006-12-20 Thread Heather Stovold

Is there a place to submit Timelines you have created? or to find timelines
other people have created?

I've created a timeline with the creation of Canadian Provinces and
Territories I find it useful, and figure others will. I looked on the
Legacy homepage, but I don't see anything about submitting them.

Thanks!

[LegacyUG] Timelines

2007-01-05 Thread Kane Scott
Although I've been using Legacy for some time it's only the last few months
I've been reading this list and seeing how much I don't know and how much
this program can really do. Please bear with me and the stupid question.
So now I created a Timeline for the past 300 years specific to my family
file. Relevant events so I might be able to "see" what was happening in the
world in my ancestor's times.

Is there a way to have my timeline displayed/printed with
Ancestor/Descendant reports, or is this something I would need a "charting"
program for ?

Can't seem to find the answer in the archives or manual, (or don't recognize
the answer), so any help or suggestions will be welcomed. With the wealth
of knowledge on this site I'm sure to get an answer. Thanks to all you
regular list contributors.

Elizabeth,

I see that someone has suggested the Help Files, always a good starting point.
I also opened one of the Timeline files in C:/Legacy ( or wherever you put it)
to have a look at the contstruction. They are only text files and hence will
open in Notepad but also Wordpad, Word, OpenOffice.org etc.

It's OK, Tim. I'm usually pretty good at checking the Help files first, but
must have had a "blonde" moment (and I apologize in advance to blondes

After I read "Getting it right" I started looking at Australian
Timelines, a year ago I updated the one I had on Australian Prime
Ministers. So this time I went to the Australian War Memorial and
used their references to create a timeline on Australians at War, the
only war not listed was Iraq from 2003, not sure if ihat's because its
considered a war or peacekeeping effort here. I followed the help
instructions on timelines. I'll be creating more for facts and events
across Australia and for personal timelines for my family to help me
when it comes to fleshing out the family history side of things. Very
easy to turn on a timeline and check out chronology report to see
places to do extra research.
Cheers

Jane,

This may not be what you are looking for, but did you know that you
can create your own timelines? I don't have Legacy open at the moment
(not at my usual computer), so I can't remember the details, but it's
a fairly simple text file, with "pipes" (straight lines) between the
items, such as dates, Etc. Save it in C:\Legacy\Timelines\English,
and then you can use this timeline for chronology reports, Etc.

You can even submit you own timeline to Support who may include it in
a later build (as I did with the one for "Ireland - Taoisigh and
Political Events - 1919 to Present").[Reminder to self, update
timeline with new details for 2007/08, and forward to support]

Look up "creating timelines" (or something similar) in help.

Of course, if you don't know the details of the state history for
those particular states, this doesn't help you at all ;)

Regards,

Dermot.

Using the program Animap, I collected the information
for the counties in each state I needed, and added
each state separately, as background timelines, with
the counties creation dates as Events. I have done
work in all of the states you mentioned and 15 more.
I also have a set of encyclopedias, which I used the
State's individual history articles. With over 100
counties in each state, I doubt our lists would
dove-tail much.

A timeline can be created in the Timeline Screen (View>Timelines) by clicking
"New" and adding the details. No need to worry about using the pipes or

The short answer is no.

What we actually need (and I think someone else mentioned it a long time
ago) is a Timeline Exchange that people can submit their self-crafted
timelines to for use by other people. The Legacy web site would be an
obvious place to store the timelines, but it would need someone to
categorise them and put together a webpage interface from which
timelines can be selected and downloaded.

Perhaps an area could be set up where users could submit their timeline

The short answer is no.

What we actually need (and I think someone else mentioned it a long time
ago) is a Timeline Exchange that people can submit their self-crafted
timelines to for use by other people. The Legacy web site would be an
obvious place to store the timelines, but it would need someone to
categorise them and put together a webpage interface from which
timelines can be selected and downloaded.

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines

2008-07-03 Thread M. Brenzel
I haven't paid too much attention to the timelines in the past but with this
discussion I thought I'd take a look at the ones provided with Legacy 7. I
have lots of connections in Quebec and see that there is a timeline for
Quebec history but it's in French! Is anyone out there able to translate
all of the entries into English and send it to Millennia for inclusion in a
future release?

Jane and Dermot,

A timeline can be created in the Timeline Screen (View>Timelines) by
clicking "New" and adding the details. No need to worry about using the
pipes or anything else as it's automatic.

At the risk of sounding lazy (or perhaps, busy) I was looking for
completed timelines. I though perhaps enterprising souls had already
created wonderful timelines for many states and one might just
piggyback. Ah, well.

I hardly know the very basics of the program yet, so probably should not
mix into something specialized.

Regards,

Dermot.

Are there timelines available other than the ones listed under "Timelines"

Mary,

That particular time-line is not published by Legacy and I guess is copyright.

I have now found the one mentioned by Jeff and I can translate this but it only
goes to 1760 and quite a bit of the early records the first vists of the French
to Canada rather than specifically relating to Quebec (but nicely sets the
context).

If this is of interest I would be happy to translate but would ask Geoff to

Go to Locations, click on the globe, select USA County Verifier, Choose your state of interest and
all the counties are listed giving the year of formation and their parent county and, where
applicable, their progeny counties.

Re: [LegacyUG] Timelines

That is a very good feature, but what I am looking for is to be able to
have an event for each person that, in the event view, will give me the
full history of a county associated with that person. TMG had state
history timelines, but I just want county history ones. I guess the
only way to get them is to do them individually for each county that my
individuals lived in myself and input them as timelines in Legacy. If I
do, then I will probably find that they are done somewhere and I have
reinvented the wheel.

I do not have such a button on my Master Location list. Is this a new

I can't believe I know the answer to something. If you go to the Master
Location list in "View", as long as you have a county with an individual
in it, you can get to the County verification list by hovering over the
little earth symbol at the bottom of the screen.

feature that hasn't been implemented or is it an old feature that has
gone away?

In the master location list there is a small blue globe. Click on this and you will see a choice to
open the County Verifier. The help file does not appear to have been updated to reflect this change.

Re: [LegacyUG] Timelines

2007-01-05 Thread Cathy

Hi Kane,
You can add your Timeline to a Chronology Report, provided you've
made it in the right format.

See the Help on the Chronology Tab Options.
OR Help - Selecting Timelines.

You can use the Publication Centre and include a Chronology Report
with an Ancestor or Descendant Report or both.

Cheers,
Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines

2007-01-06 Thread ronald ferguson

Kane,

Yes you can.

As Cathy says, you can follow the instructions to write one from within Legacy,
or if you already have one as text then you can do the following:

The timeline is simply a text file. You learn the construction I suggest that
you go the Legacy folder and open Timelines>English and open a convenient file
by double clicking.

You will see that the various columns are separated by " | " (no inverted
commas but note the spaces).
If you have a carriage return within a field then this uses "{\n}". Also note
that the first column contains a zero.
To put it in the Legacy format simply replace the attributes with the correct
Legacy attributes and save in Timelines>English.

You can also add timelines right within the Legacy Programs (where you
would select a timeline, click on the Add button.) - then you don't need to
worry about the exact format, because you use an editor that creates the
file in the format.

I'm not sure which reports can use the timeline (which i believe was the
question) - as I really don't print a lot of reports

Heather,

That was the point which Cathy made. I was only suggesting that if a timeline
had already been written as, say, a text file then it could be put into the
Legacy format without retyping it all by replacing two attributes.

This I have done myself with a list of franchise developments in the UK - saved

2007-01-06 Thread Candi

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I would love to make a small suggestion about timelines. Usually I
just kind of hide in the background. Many years ago I ran into a
wonderful site at ourtimelines.com it is so fantastic You put
in the date of birth and date of death and it tells you all that
happened in the world during that time frame. Many of you no doubt
already know about it but thought those that don't may enjoy it.
Also those in New Mexico wil love to know there is one for there as
well.

Sincerely,
Candi

[LegacyUG] Timelines for Legacy

2008-08-31 Thread Sheri Harris
I know Legacy v7 comes with several timelines, but would like more on US
general history. I can't seem to find any on Legacy's site any to download,
or I'm just not finding them. I'm mostly interested in US general history
and individual state histories and possibly epidemics and disasters. My
husband is a history buff and history teacher and so is my son, and I know I
can create my own, but unfortunately, we don't have the time to devote to
creating them. Does anyone know where or how to get any? I know there are
several timeline software programs out there, but would really like these in
Legacy so I can include those in my reports and publishing center. If not,
is there a program that will import this into Legacy and vice versa? And I'm
hope asking about a compatible program is not off topic and if it is, please
reply to me privately.

Thanks!

For instance, I'm creating a timeline for North America's Major
Natural Disasters. Most of this data can be found on the noaa.gov web
site. I don't want to copy it verbatim, of course, but I do want to
pick out vital information, such as dates, disaster names, death toll,
and areas affected.

Will this toe the line on infringement of rights?
I'm working on several time lines right now, and had thought to pass
them on to Legacy if there were no issues.

Anyone? How do you determine what to and not to include in time lines
without fear of infringements?

If this is off topic please respond off list to me at jrkmorgan @ gmail.com

[LegacyUG] Timelines Deletion Error

2006-11-26 Thread Jennifer
Hello everybody! I was having trouble with the Acadian timeline appearing in
all my chronology reports, even though the box for it was not selected. So I
deleted it, as it does not apply to my family at all. Now it won't display
any timelines and instead I get an error message saying:

Error Displaying Timeline List.

Error 53: File not found

Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?

Has anybody else had this problem and are there any recommendations for how
I can remedy it? I have done quite a bit of work since the backup before I
did this, and am not even sure which backup I would need to go back to.so if
there is a way to fix this without losing everything, I would want to do
that.

Sincerely,

Jennifer

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines for Legacy

2008-08-31 Thread ronald ferguson

Sheri,

The timelines are simple csv type text files which are situated in
Legacy\Timelines\lang and can be opened in Notepad or any text program. You
will see that they use " | " instead of commas and "{\n}" as line feeds (no
quotes for either).

It should not be too much trouble to convert other formatted timelines to the
Legacy format - although remember that someone almost certainly holds copyright.

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines for Legacy

2008-08-31 Thread Sheri Harris
Ron,

Thanks for the help. I was thinking that at one time there were some user
submitted timelines that were available for download on the Legacy site, but
they don't seem to be there now. (Could have dreamed that also.) Anyway, the
information I'm looking for in a timeline would be very basic facts; event
name and date, which shouldn't be a copyright issue. I do have a few I'm
working on and I will play around with import/export to see how to do that.

Thanks again for the help.

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines for Legacy

2008-09-01 Thread ronald ferguson

Sheri,

I think you are referring to Legacy's invitation for users to submit their own
Timelines for consideration for inclusion in the Legacy set. As far as I know
this invitation still stands, and I know the Legacy download does include them.

It is easy to do your own, and as you suggested, the time is taken up on the
research.

Best wishes,

RE: [LegacyUG] Timelines and copyrite

2008-09-02 Thread ronald ferguson

Jess,

Details of copyright law vary from country to country but broadly speaking
facts cannot be copyrighted, however the presentation can. So to reproduce
somebody else's timeline, for example, would be a breach of copyright, but to
compile one oneself by culling the dates and places from a variety of sources
would not. What you are proposing does not seem to me to be in breach.

It is customary to give a bibliography of sources used and Legacy gives space
to do this on the opening page of a timeline.

Ron,

Minor point. Whilst copyright law does vary from country to country, both
the US and Great Britain (plus many others) are signatories to the Geneva
Accord on Copyright. This, in effect, means that US copyright has right of
law in Britain, and British copyright enjoys similar rights in the US.

Jennifer,

Make sure Legacy is closed.
Use Windows Explorer to go to the Legacy folder on your hard drive.
To see where this folder is use Help > General Information. The Legacy
install folder will be shown on that screen.

In the Legacy program folder delete the file timelines.usr.
Now restart Legacy and check that the problem has been solved.

Hi Jennifer,

Have you tried deleting
timeline.usr
and/or
chron.usr
in the Legacy program folder?
Close Legacy first.

Your family file is unlikely to be the cause of
this error - so restoring a backup is unlikely to help.

It's not deleting the timelines, just the settings file which seems
to be corrupted. When you restart Legacy and use the feature, a new
