I was pretty sure that VW/Porsche/Audi was a company in the 1970's,
much like General Motors or British Leyland.

Volvo/Limey?
For some reason, all I can think of is Marcos, which bought some I-6 Volvo
engines
for US market cars, but had their own frames (with real metal by the time they
put Volvo engines in them) and fiberglas bodies. I really wanted one back in
1970

If the 617 is quieter, there is something seriously WRONG with the

Are you using synthetic oil in the 603?

[MBZ] Cayenne..who knew anyone would buy one?

2005-09-14 Thread RELNGSON
Harry ?M says partially incorrectly:

As I previously posted, the Cayenne and Touareg share the platform and doors.
That's it. They certainly don't use the same engines except for the low end
V6 which I think is a modified Audi engine. Some would like to see the VW V-10
diesel in the Cayenne to which Porsche has replied "never." However, Porsche
has just announced at the Frankfurt Auto Show that they will collaborate with
VW on a hybrid.

BTW, Ferry Porsche's nephew is the recently retired head of the VW Group,
Ferdinand Piech. That's the connection.

WHAT CAR and year? As the internal baffles age, the system gets noisier
(well before holes or external leaks appear). Consider Bosal replacement
parts (Rusty sells them) if they make them for your year and model. They
have a lifetime warranty. Eberspaecher is the OE maker for Mercedes and
better quality than Bosal, but the warranty is far inferior. I've used
both and both are of GOOD quality. Replace what is bad. I've found no
advantage to replacing exhaust parts that aren't worn out yet.

Re: [MBZ] Paint Codes

2005-09-14 Thread Dave M.
Hi Peter,

According to my 1987 color chart:

900 = Deep Blue (non metallic)
904 = Midnight Blue (non metallic)
929 = Nautical Blue (metallic)

looking at the sample color chips on my chart, the 929 is slightly
lighter than the 900, but not drastically. I'd guess it's your eyes
deceiving you, or it might be some fading over the past 18 years.
There is no code 930 that year.

On a side note, my car is 904 (Midnight Blue), which everyone mistakes
for black except maybe in full sunlight. I don't know how many times
I've been asked 'hey, is that your black BMW out there?' me: 'Uh, if
you mean the blue Mercedes, why yes it is...'

[MBZ] Porsche

2005-09-14 Thread RELNGSON
<>

Except for the early fifties, Porsche had done pretty well until the early
eighties when 911 sales were in the dumper due to prices the public finally
balked at. Porsche freely admits that the 944 saved the company and that after
that period there have been more watercooled Porsches on the road than
aircooled
which the 911 drivers of course could not face.

In the mid-nineties Porsche employed a Japanese company to come in and tell
them how to up their quality and cut production costs. The result was the 993
and soon after they built the first zero-defects car in the company's history.
And, due to taking the Japanese advice, manufacturing cost of that model was
cut by one third. And no one was more surprised than I at the sales numbers of
the not-so-beautiful Cayenne. Turns out people will indeed pay 100 grand for
an SUV if it's fast and turns and stops, unlike the others.

The kind of noises you describe usually take months and many hundreds or
even thousands of highway miles of driving to "cure." That's because
many of the noises occur because of the condition of the prechambers and
it can take a VERY long time of proper combustion at higher engine
speeds and load to clean out a prechamber.

Lifter noise can take even longer. Usually 5,000-10,000 miles will
substantially reduce lifter noise, but one of my 2.2 liter 601.921
engines just kept getting quieter for 50kmi and my 2 liter 601.912 is
still getting quieter after 70 kmi!!

[MBZ] 356 engines in VWs

2005-09-14 Thread Dan Weeks

I've also seen a couple of 356 engines in VWs.

My brother was given a 1954 356 that had driven into a toll both and
totalled. It was so rusty that the entire car basically
disintegrated. My brother bolted the Porsche 1500 dual carb engine
and aluminum close-ratio trans into a 1960 beetle that was 15 years
old at the time and looked totally beat. He used to amaze
302/4V/duals-equipped modified Mustang IIs by winning drag races with
them. Low-speed handling was astounding. It would take 90-degree
turns at 45 mph with a flick of the wrist and a tap of the toe and
never leave the lane. It basically pivoted around the front wheels.
The g-forces would separate flesh from bone. The stock VW would have
rolled trying such a maneuver, but the lighter engine--and the
ability to power-steer the rear end--made it possible. I've ridden in
professionally driven Vipers and 911Ss on race tracks at triple digit
speeds, but nothing I've sat in defied the laws of physics like that
Porschwagon. Eventually the bug disintegrated too, and my brother
sold the engine in Hemmings to a Porsche restorer.

$1200 - replaced pump with a used one and resealed the
entire tranny. Another local Indy (my old one) quoted
me $1980 to reseal a tranny (turned out he put 1 qt
too much ATF in and that is why it was leaking. I took
it out (1 qt) and it's been fine ever since, HENCE he
is my OLD indy).

[MBZ] 190D tires

2005-09-14 Thread Ron Dwelle
My son has taken over my wife's 85 190D 2.5 Euro and taken it off to
college. It's in need of new tires. Currently, I have on it Nokian NRWs
which have been excellent, but replacing them would be quite expensive
and probably overkill for his needs (which are to drive 15 miles 4 days
a week, to work, occasionally in snow--in Michigan. And, I suppose,
picking up girls or whatever).

Looking at Tire Rack, the best deal may be the Kumho Solus KH16. Anyone
have experience with them?

Any other suggestions for a good but cheap all-weather tire?

Thanks,
Ron Dwelle

[MBZ] C320

2005-09-14 Thread RELNGSON
For those who are always looking for something to criticize about the present
models, here's some ammo. My C320 has developed a fuel leak, or perhaps seep
would be the word for now. I jacked it up today (lifted by the diff) and
searched with a light, finding nothing. The fuel filter, above the left
bellypan is
dry. The two tanks ahead of the axle under the floor are too protected to be
very visible. I'm wondering about the sender (2) gaskets. And, I don't know
where the charcoal canister is located.

I suppose I could search with a match

RLE/good thing it's still under warranty

Maybe I'll refrase that response, I didn't mean to say Porsche used the same
engine in the Cayenne as VW uses in the Touareg. I meant to say they share the
same bodies but different drivetrains are used. BTW, there is no V6 option in
the Cayenne only in the Touareg which is in fact a Audi engine

I have to agree that Porsche went through the dumper with the 911 and the 928

the engine in front and being a V8. Decent sales of the 924, 924 turbo and the

explain is really weak. Will give it a try though

We hit the PnP every so often to get goodies. He is after dead
cherokees and Exploders to make the crummy Dana gearing in the back of
his work. He figured out the Ford axle works great at the rear, but
you have to move brake lines and shock mounts. Hooks up at the U joint
He also lifted his a bit. so there is a little chance he could lose
the shaft at the TC. His is a late 80's 4L, and according to him, the
back end cone got upgraded with a sort of locking pin to keep the TC
sealed if you lost the back shaft, instead of losing all fluid when the
shaft gets pooped out. Must reduce slip out, to shear off at the U
joint. Upgraded cone in the 94? maybe.

As for gearing, I suspect he is looking for the better (lower) gearing
offered in later model diff.

Sorry for clueless ramblings. If this actually makes sense, I will
have to drink another beer.

Lets see

"The engine produces 160 horsepower and gets an estimated fuel

Not always a good combination. A lot of the tuning programs advance the timing.
Propane
effectively advances the timing. With the wrong software, propane can put a rod
through
the block sooner than you might think. There was a guy on a Ford forum a few
years ago
bragging about how much power he was getting from a very severe chip (maybe
bullydog?) in
combination with propane. A week later he was complaining that his month old,
totally
stock 7.3 put a rod through the block and Ford was dragging their feet about
fixing it.
If I'd have known who his dealer was, I'd have sent them copies of his web
postings.

[MBZ] Porsche diesels

2005-09-14 Thread RELNGSON
<>

You mean the Porsche Diesel tractor, don't you, you rascal? There were about
five of them (restored) at the recent Porsche Parade in Hershey PA. As I
recall, you had a choice of 1, 2, or 3 cylinders.

Without researching it, I think they were made by someone else using the name
but a lot of US Porsche owners own them.

[MBZ] More Vo-po

2005-09-14 Thread RELNGSON
<,If I'm not mistaken the 914 was essentially a true Porsche but it did use a
1.7 VW engine.>>

The 914-4's engine progressed to 1.8 and then 2.0 in 1973. Not to mention the
914-6 with the 2 liter 911 engine. A close friend who just took delivery of
an '06 997S has owned a flawless 1973 914 2.0 since new, 32 years and 55000
miles. I can't find even one rock chip on it. It's worth 10 grand, apparently.

BTW, Vo-Po is the scornful name the Germans used for the 914 since it was
marketed there as a Volkswagen-Porsche. Vo-Po was also the hated term for the
East German police.

[MBZ] Totaled my 240D (mostly for Seattle-area folks)

2005-09-14 Thread David Goldsmith
Hi, folks! So, it was bound to happen sooner or
later, given the miles I was logging: I crumpled my
'82 240D. :(( Despite severe front end damage, much
of the engine (e.g., new battery, alternator, Viton
fuel return lines, strong engine largely serviceable I
think) and body (everything from the front doors back,
new Goodyear tires) is usable. It sits in the tow lot
at the NW corner of Mercer and Fairview in Seattle -
if interested, please go inspect ASAP (@ $31/day, I
need to get it out of the lot ASAP) and email or call
me at 360-481-3800 if you want to make an offer (e.g.,
you pay to tow away).

[MBZ] Touareg diesel

2005-09-14 Thread RELNGSON
<>

Porsche never intended to power the Cayenne with a diesel. And the Touareg
V-10 turbodiesel is sold everywhere but here where it ran afoul of the EPA and
it was pulled. A friend had signed the deal to swap his ML for one when all
orders were cancelled by VW. It may come back when the low sulfur diesel shows
up
here.

Anyhow, The Cayenne's next big powerplant will be some kind of hybrid
developed with VW. Of course, three weeks ago the story was they were talking
with
Toyota about their hybrids. Pick a rumor.

their own engines in Stuttgart, for one place. There is a website someplace
