[MBZ] Double dose of anti-water today!

2006-01-15 Thread Curt Raymond
I put a whole bottle of Power Service Diesel Suppliment in Hammie today. So
thats plenty to treat 50 gallons in about 15 gallons of fuel.
"Why would you do a stupid thing like that?" You might ask.
Well yesterday when I got home from work it was 55F and raining. Right now 28
hours later its 4F and the temp continues to fall...

Good info about the compression test pricing. I agree. I won't have it done
for that much. To answer your question, I'm paying $900 for a supposedly
105k engine. They say they usually charge 1,000 - 1,100 for that engine, but
someone initially quoted me 900, and when I told them that, they said they'd
let me have it for that. Not sure why they'd be willing to take that loss.
The shipping for about 125 mi. was some $75.

I'm changing engines because the old one crapped out - blown head gasket I'm
told. Was told it'd be more expensive to go in and repair the old engine. We
don't know exactly why the head gasket went and the engine wound up shot,
because we haven't had the car in our possession. Maybe it was driven around
on a leaking gasket for some time, then allowed to sit (it was allowed to

There is no justification for a price of $160 for a compression test.
It should take less than 1/2 hour. All injectors (or GPs) need to be
removed, the proper adapter gets screwed into the hole and engine is
spun a few revolutions, the gauge is read and on to the next cylinder.
Even if a starter needs to be attached, a creative tech would be able
to rig it in minutes.

Just for the record; How much are you spending on an engine/shipping
and why are you changing engines? This may have been discussed but it
must have been before I joined Klebbie's list.

You have not deleted ie, but perhaps removed/hidden access to it. The
basic functionality is embedded and required by the operating system.
The core DLL's are referenced by os calls. If you delete the DLL's,
the OS will crash - more than usual.

If you dislike it that much, try Linux.

[MBZ] vacuum door locks 1982 300TD wagon

Vacuum Door locks - do not function.

I think the lines in the engine bay may have been disconnected by PO I am not
sure and I do not have any diagrams or pictures to look at. Is there a site
with good pictures, etc. or is there a good book I should be purchasing?
There are two yellow lines coming out of the firewall. one is bright yellow
and the other is a darker yellow. Are these for the door locking system? If
so where do they connect to the vacuum system?.

2006-01-15 Thread Peter Frederick
The 220D is a bit slower and a bit less thirsty. The W123 will be
slower yet and more thirsty, although not by much.

A good condition 220D with auto should get 32 mpg, about -- add a
couple for a stick (desirable, as the auto is SLOW!)

Other than the displacement, the 220D and 240D w115 are just about
identical -- both have mechanical shut-off/pull knob start.

The 220D is about 4 seconds slower then the 240D (same transmission).

Mercedes rates fuel economy of the 220D about 3 mpg better.

The early ('68-69) 220Ds seemed to have some serious cylinder wear
problems. The later 115s were more "refined" but that had both a good
and bad side. Friends that owned early 115s seemed to have a lot of rust

Gump is able to get 30mpg most tanks. I think that has more to do with
not having anything else using HP. The 240 would have AC, PS, and who

Biggest difference is that Performance Products has w123 stuff in their
catalogue. The w123 has lots of interesting things and bits that take
more work to take off. I do not own a w123 and only come across them

You could try Opera, but I don't know if it's any closer to IE. It's
different from the Gecko engine used in Netscape/Firefox, though.

There used to be a lot of "alternative browsers" out there for Windows
that were really just different skins on top of the IE browser engine,
which is a DLL that other pieces of software can load. You could try to

Unlikely. An air dam, in fact, will probably *increase* drag by adding
more frontal area. The idea of an air dam is to create a low pressure
area under the front of the car, to add downforce. I've never noticed
any tendancy for the front end to 'skate' on my W123, so an air dam
probably isn't necessary.

On some cars, an air dam also aids cooling by creating a low pressure
area behind the radiator, to help draw air through it.

To reduce drag from the undercarriage, you'd probably need a full belly pan.

cleaner, but then you have an oily carbuoy and hoses sitting around.
Haven't bought one yet, but probably will, as oil changes around here
are about $80 for the 617.

[MBZ] OT: Browser that's a close approximation of IE page displays?

2006-01-15 Thread Zeitgeist
Yet another computer related question.

I'm working (on a Sunday!!!), and the legislative bill tracking
webpage I'm working with doesn't display correctly in either Firefox
or Netscape 8.0. A while back I managed to delete IE from my machine,
or at least to disable it from loading somehow. I'd rather not
download that odious MS product again, so is there another browser
alternative that should display web tables very closely to IE
specifications? Is there a way to get either those other two browsers
to display tables differently?

Re: [MBZ] Growling clutch, 300TD

2006-01-15 Thread l02turner
Sounds like the release bearing. It may growl for a long time while
continuing to work as it's only wearing when the pedal is depressed. Then
again, if it's falling apart instead of just running dry it could fail
immediately.

Now, what is likely to happen next - when it goes to the shop they'll say,
"the release bearing (may say throw-out bearing) is bad - but, while we're
in there we should probably replace the clutch disc and pressure plate
also."

It's a costly decision - but you'll need to base the answer on how long the
clutch assy has been in use and get an idea from other manual tranny owners
how long to expect a clutch to last - given your driving style.

If you should be able to expect a lot more miles on the clutch you might get
away with just replacing the TO Bearing. It also depends on how much of a
gambler you are...

Good luck -

Euan,

Probably the throw out bearing which moves the pressure plate is bad.
They
can make noise for a long time and not hurt anything. As long as the
clutch

releases properly you could take your time with this annoyance. You will
have to pull the trans to replace it.

Meanwhile, I would pull the fill plug on the transmission and make sure
there is some ATF in there as the noise could be coming from a dry
gearbox, too.
It should be right up to the bottom of the fill plug hole but could be
low

an inch or so and still be safe.

Back in the early 80's DE Davis went to C&D as Editor. One of the perks was
a company car - a W123 wagon was available and they customized it. The mag
ran an article showing the mods - + sized wheels, contrasting paint from the
body moulding down, lowered, kick-ass stereo with multiple speakers in all
doors, CD player (a marvel back then), gazzillion watts, etc - euro lights
and some other goodies I can't recall.

The lowering, contrast paint below the molding and the wide, low profile mag
wheels were very cool. Some of the other stuff was a bit garish but it's
all personal taste, I guess.

I didn't open the link but from your question, I can imagine that it
is the type I am familiar to working with. The air pressure forces a
bladder into a cavity, when the pressure is released it creates a
vacuum on the other side of the bladder, hence sucking whatever fluid
the tube is immersed in into the cavity. Very quiet and effective but
much more than the average guy on this list needs. It would be like
buying a tractor to mow a 60'x80' lot.
Regardless of all the hype, it still is perfectly OK to pull the drain
plug when changing oil. At least then you can use one of the washers
that comes with your new oil filter.

Re: [MBZ] 123 vacuum challenges?

2006-01-15 Thread Peter Frederick
Likely the AC compressor is toast -- try turning the clutch by hand --
if it's abnormally stiff, you need to replace it -- this is a big job,
sadly, and the system usually is full of crap that will kill a new
compressor pretty fast. More likely is a bad belt, though.

The AC compressor is not operated by vacuum, but by the electronics in
the pushbutton unit. It does cycle more than you think.

Check the operation of the shutoff solenoid, and check for oil in the
lines to it (brown and brown with a blue stripe) -- if oil is present,
the diaphram is leaking and needs to be replaced. You must also
replace the rubber connectors at the shutoff switch on the keyswitch
and flush the lines out to get rid of the oil in ther -- it can cause
the switch to stick, causing low performance when the shutoff solenoid
doesn't release completely.

[MBZ] 123 vacuum challenges?

2006-01-15 Thread Richard Murdoch
Hello everyone it has been a while since I have been able to keep up with the
list and even worse what needs to be done to our vehicles.

Our 82TDt (300D turbo wagon) runs fine first time it is started after sitting
a while. If it is shut down briefly or sits for a short time it becomes very
sluggish. If I turn it off then wait for a bit with the key in the start
position it will usually be back to normal when I re-start.

Shut down has also become very slow.

I was thinking the two problems might be related to the shut down assembly. I
had already blocked off the locking system and replaced any rubber vacuum
connectors that were deteriorated.

Now to add to the question - I had to disconnect the AC compressor. Everytime
the HEAT was turned on the AC clutch or belt started screaming. The AC and
heat had not been responding to changes on the temp controll - but were working.

Can the climate control system be affected by engine related vacuum leaks?
Could the compressor have been cycling on and off and causing the loss of power?

I don't think the brakes are dragging. The the calipers and brake hoses have
been replaced.

Any thoughts will be appreciated, mean while I will dig out the MityVac.
Sincerely,
Richard Murdoch

Re: [MBZ] OT: Buying a car in WA

2006-01-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
The problem with getting the insurance ahead of time is that if you show
up and the car is a POS and you dont buy it, then you have to cancel the
insurance. In OK and many other states Im sure if you buy insurance on a
car then cancel it within 6 months or so, the state will suspend your
license. Then in order to unsuspend it you have to send them proof you
either didnt buy the car or sold it. Its a pain. Its supposed to stop
people from buying cars, getting insurance to obtain a tag, then cancel
the insurance after they have the tag. It ends up getting more innocent
people though.

[MBZ] 123 air dam

2006-01-15 Thread Karl Wittnebel
OK, this may be totally frivolous, but I was driving home at 70mph last night
against a 40mph headwind, wondering if there is anything I can do to improve
the 123 wagon's aerodynamics. Only thing that came to mind was a front air dam,
as I've heard that a relatively large percentage of the drag on any car comes
from the undercarriage. Two questions:

 1) Are functional aftermarket air dams still available for 123s? I know racers
used them some time ago.

 2) Anybody know whether they might improve mileage on the hwy?

 Thanks,
 Karl in DC

I'm no boy racer, but my understanding was that air dams were all
about reducing lift on a car at high speeds by making more of a
vacuum underneath. I've experienced such lift on my Camaro (which
has an air dam) at around 140 mph. Scared straight!

I have seen a 450SLC converted to manual to rally. It is owned by Joe
Alexander and he was not happy because they bumped him into modified class
because the 450's never came with manual, I seem to remember him saying that
he pulled the gearbox out of a 350SLC.
Plus there are lots of instances of Mercedes rallying SLC's and I don't
think they where all auto or six cylinders.

In Michigan temporary permits were available but weren't needed for the

Here in WA, plates stay with the car. (Unless 'special', like vanity

It's currently in WA. Michigan, where I used to live, required the
seller to pull the plates and keep them, hence my confusion I suppose.

I think you can jack on the pivot bracket safely on the swing axle
cars, at least I have done so. The pivot bracket is bolted to the
bottom of the trunk via a large rubber mount (that probably needs to be
replaced by now!). DO NOT jack on the differential itself, though!

It's better, though, to use the jack points.

Is it necessary to have a temporary permit to drive a newly-purchased
car home, in WA? In MI, where I used to live, it's legal to drive
without a plate to the "first place of storage," but I can't find any
info on whether that's legal here.

When in doubt, follow the money. WA sells temporary permits,
so ipso facto it's not legal to drive without a license of some
sort. But so far as I know you only need the temp permits for
something that doesn't already have some valid license in some
state. That is, a driver that you just bought is fine. Some
resurrected hulk, or say, a Mog from Germany, and you need the
temp permit.

A Trip Permit is required but is good only in the State of WA. Other
States issue a permit that is valid in all States. I was advised to
stop in OR and obtain another permit as I headed South to CA.

At least that is the way it was 4 years ago.

WA always needs to be a little different.

Brian,

I did a lot of diesel parts business with TriStar before they moved and got
treated honestly and fairly on my parts. They even replaced an air cleaner
bracket (that they sold me) that lasted less than a year but warned me that my
motor mounts were bad (true) and they wouldn't do it again.

I have not dealt with them since they moved to West Broadway so do not know
if their principles and/or principals remain the same.

I believe all you need to crank the engine, for a compression test, is the
flexplate, which has the ring gear on it. The starter mounts on the engine
side of the block and the starter bolts might be a little too long without the
transmission, but a couple spacers should fix that!

Having said that, a cold cranking compression test is likely to be all over
the map because you don't have any idea how much oil is clinging to the rings
and cylinders. Squirting oil in there leaves you wondering how much
compression is from the oil and how much is from cranking.

As they are currently discussing this on the Stu list, (topic was flooding a
diesel) even a good engine my require tow starting after sitting a long time
because of lack of oil seal on the rings. I say put it in and get it
running. If TriStar said it was good you gotta go with that.

And when you are totally disgusted with the 240D, bring me $4500 and you can

It may not be the preferred point of lift, but that's what I've been
doing for years. It's convenient cuz it's centrally located, and only
requires you to jack once going up, and once going down. I don't even
use the wood block, since Harbor Freight has a nifty little
rubber-faced jack pad, which helps to avoid marring any sensitive
jack-point surfaces.

I seem to remember the 450's only came with autos due to the high torque.

Me too. A two-post offset screw-type lift makes under-car work a snap. It's
great when you need to do stuff like, oh, I dunno, pull the motor from a 240D:

I cheat. Brother-in-law has the keys to the local Goodyear dealership (he is
head mechanic), so when "crawl under the car" stuff comes up, we just use
the lift.

There are a couple really nice jack points on w123s depending on need:

Both front tires? Front crossmember.
Both rear tires? Differential.
One front tire? Frame rail behind the factory jack point.
One rear tire? Subframe bushing plate (just watch out and don't crush the limit
stop).

Plenty of others that are "safe", but utility is questionable for the majority
of work when another method would be preferential.

Or they'd make ctrl-C, ctrl-Z, etc. into menu commands. I remember
that. I used MacTerminal to get on BBSs with my Mac Plus back in the
day. But I don't see that as nearly as big a problem as the Windows
situation. There was no use for the Option key when using the machine
as a dumb terminal, and since its normal Mac use was to create special
characters, there was already a little bit of ergonomic precedent for
its subsitution for Control.
