I was always the classsmartass, esp in physics. In high school my
physics tchr marked me wrong on a test for Heisenberg's uncertainty
principle, where I said it was position and momentum (not velocity). I
argued mightily I was correct to no avail til he told me to shut up. So
I went to the library after school and looked in about 15 physics books,
which were pretty much evenly split on the two answers. So next day I
come in with all this, and before I could say anything he grabbed the
test and fixed the score and told me I was a smartass. I said, "Thank
you!" and the class all laughed like hell. I kept up with him for
awhile, he was a funny guy. He was also quite a large gent, and because
of his name we nicknamed him "Buzz" and had a saying that Budweiser
makes Buzzwider...

One day we had a substitute, a really old retired college prof, I think
he was German or East European of some sort, who proceeded to teach us
about the pervading "ether."

I have not really found that to be the case with the gas engines I have had.

A gas engine will eat you out of house & home. They constantly need
*something* - no matter how nice or how well maintained. Let them get a little

I had a few gas MBs and all were the same. $25 for this, $100 for that, $10 for
this, $500 for that - constantly needing a little here and a little there.

That may not be a problem for you - and a big gas W126 is unequalled in comfort
and security on the open road (unless you find a W140) - but just be prepared
for a healthy maintanence program, especially with over 200K on the clock.
Personally, I would not consider a gas engine with over 150K unless I was
getting it cheap enough so I could rebuild it and not be unside-down.

I just don;t think I'd feel confident it would always get me home with so many
miles on it.

But they're awesome cars when you're behind the wheel and you covering
interstate at 80mph+ in near silence except for the stereo. But I'd feel
better in a diesel.

Good luck -

Oddly enough my w140 is having it's 60K mile/92K km service completed
today. I'll let everyone know what the bill comes too.

I did pass on replacing the activated charcoal filter at this time
which is $362 or so (internet pricing) plus you have to remove the
wiper motor assembly to get at the filter housing, 3 hours labour?
I'll look at that filter replacement next year after visiting the USA
and picking it up somewhere to avoid the duty/taxes I'd normally have
to pay in Canada, plus pricing is a bit better. Well that and having
it done today likely would have added another $1K to the bill.

PS as a maintenance item I replaced the heater manifold pipe
distributor, which is a plastic 4 pipe creation that "T"s off coolant
for the heater cores. It sits on top of the rear engine block and
internet experience says they crack over time, dumping your
antifreeze all over the engine, and likely toasting it if one is not
paying attention.

In replacing that part they discovered one of the heater hoses had
a bulge in it and needed to be replaced, requiring a two day wait
here as the S shaped hose comes from central parts. Given the car
is 15 years old I thought it was wise to check all that piping for
issues.

Levi,
R-12 connectors look like a Tire Stem welded to the pipe.
When R-12 to R-134 conversions are done the R-134 adapter is screwed on
top of the R-12 connector.
Some of the 134 adapters have Red Lock-Tite (Stud & Bearing) on the
threads making it hard to remove
the 134 adapter. But it can be done. Just a little heat will release the
Lock-Tite,
Go to your local McParts store and Look in the A/C Supplies area You
will find the adapters (Under 5 Bucks)
Pick up a set then change out the leaking one you have. Screw off Old

removing the adapter (or was it coated in permanent threadlocker?).

Is this task covered in the manual?

This was possible in _some_ R12 systems, but some later ones had

As I recall, the stock R12 valve looks pretty much like the valve on a
tire. The R134a valve is larger. If the system was converted, an
adapter was simply screwed onto the original valve, and threadlocker
is supposed to be used to make it "permanent".

Re: [MBZ] Leaking R134 valve

2007-05-30 Thread Jim Cathey
So, then there are actually TWO shrader valves, one on top of the
other?

No. Either you remove the one in the R12 fitting before you put
on an R134a fitting that has its own, or the R134a fitting has
an extension to push the button on the R12's valve. The latter is
a pita because when/if the valve needs servicing you can't get
to it.

I just take 'em off, blow/dump out as much of the evil oil-like
substance they've put in it, put in new R12 oil and recharge with
secret sauce.

I've done that once, on my wife's 560 SL. We'll see how it holds
up. (I used gasoline to sluice out the compressor when I had it
off for servicing.) This summer will be its first real endurance
test, though it has sat and held a charge for nearly two years.

Exactly correct. I had a '68 280SE and an '86 190E. I spent far more in

Re: [MBZ] Heresy....I'm looking at a gasser.

2007-05-30 Thread LarryT
A gas engine will eat you out of house & home. They constantly need
*something* - no matter how nice or how well maintained. Let them get a little
behind on maintanence and thangs can get ugly (financially speaking) pretty
fast. I had a few gas MBs and all were the same. $25 for this, $100 for that,
$10 for this, $500 for that - constantly needing a little here and a little
there.

Good luck -

I can change out the clutch on a York compressor, right?
The compresor works when is switched on but the clutch is rattly and
noisy

when the compressor is off.
Is this task covered in the manual?

So...when I start twisting wrenches tomorrow I get to fix the
ACcompressor

clutch, rebuild the vacuum pump and replace a headlight. An odd combo.

Yes there was a bad batch of cams that found it's way into the Merc V8's but
I am pretty sure given the mileage that it is either not one of the affected
ones or has been replaced.

Croatia. From what I understand he bought the donor 500SE only to find

The M117 engine in this car has a history of eating
cams well before the indicated mileage of this car.
Worse than that, the likelihood of head bolt holes

stripping out while removing and replacing heads in
the process is far more common. I have it on good
authority that about 1 in 4 of these require Helicoils
due to head bolt holes stripping. And it's not an

Personally I think 230K is a lot of miles for a gasoline engine. I
don't know specifically how they compare to the diesels for
longevity. of course a lot depends on the maintenance history.

Remember it will take premium ga$oline.

Re: [MBZ] Heresy....I'm looking at a gasser.

2007-05-30 Thread Sunil Hari

how long do the gasser engines last?

if it's a car that you'll look back and say, "I -wish- I'd bought that!"
you've got to buy it. Cars come and go, but regret lasts a looong
time. I'm still regretting not buying a particular wagon 1.5 years ago.

Re: [MBZ] Leaking R134 valve

2007-05-30 Thread Mitch Haley

What kind of R134 connectors do you have?
The ones with their own schrader valves, or the ones that fit over
the R12 service connector and have a little pushrod to open the
original schrader valve? If the latter, can you fix the leak by
removing the adapter (or was it coated in permanent threadlocker?).
