I have an old brass pin-striper - it's a cylinder with a plunger, and a knurled wheel running in a slot at the bottom. There's a guide arm on one side that's adjustable, but it's just a brass rod. I've never tried to use it - it looks like paint would just run right out around the wheel. I pin-striped my '51 VW when I re-painted it in college - by hand. It was OK, but not perfectly straight like the pro can do. Re: [MBZ] Is this something I'd want to get into?
My 2001 ML 320 gets 22.3mpg on the highway, and 19 in town. I paid twice that for mine, but it had $7200 of work done on it before I bought it. Water pump, radiator, power steering pump, and the alternator were the biggies. It doesn't seem to be too hard to work on, though I've only messed with the expansion valve and receiver/dryer so far. You do need a set each of male and female torx bits/sockets - they are everywhere on that car. It dirves/rides like a truck - which is what it is - don't expect it to drive like a W124. It's a well behaved truck, but there's nothing soft about it (other than the seats after a leatherique treatment). The all wheel drive is a chain in the transfer case, with independent wheel braking for traction loss management. I'll see how that works this winter. I did not see anything in the owners manual about replacing all four tires at once, but I wasn't looking for it, since that's what I do as SOP. I found quite a bit of information about the W163 at http://www.mbworld.org/forums/m-class-w163-10/. In the 60s and early 70s, BMW motorcycle tanks were all hand pinstriped. I changed my 70 /5 from silver/Blue to the classic Schwarz/weiss colors. I found a guy down by the river in Nauvoo, Il who was supposed to be good at hand pinstriping. After I had the tank painted Black imron, I took it to him for striping, which he said was no problem, as he had done many BMW tanks. I also asked him to do some additional lettering and scrollwork. When I got the tank back, I was amazed at the artwork he had done. All by hand. I still have the tank. He told me that pinstriping was done with flat leather "brushes" I think JCWhitney still sells the flat pinstriping brushes. > What about those JC Whitney striping kits, with the bottle fed stripe rollers and guide wheel to hold a straight line? Do they still sell those things? I would guess, like most painting gadgets that are marketed to amateurs, that you would have mediocre results. If they were really so great, the pros would use them, but they don't, they pinstripe by hand. Same with professional house painters, they don't use all those edging gadgets or even tape most of the time. They have a good brush and they cut in around trim and fixtures by hand. Re: [MBZ] W126 Euro headlights?
Randy - Hadn't thought about that. You're probably right. Of course on my '81 cars the stock lighting is all with regular fuses. The stock configuration is such that there is one fuse for each bulb so if you lost one low beam fuse you would still have the other low beam and both high beams. I'm trying to remember the way I wired the relay kit and I believe that there are now just two 60A fuses. One for Lows and one for Highs. So if you did lose one fuse you would still have either both lows or both highs. If I was to do it over again I think I would go to my local McParts and buy the new style fuses holders with a pigtail that use the double spade connection type fuses that they use on all the new cars. I guess it would be good as well to go back to using 4 fuses or the circuit breakers too. Barry > I keep seeing references to fuses and headlights. Is that not > considered > poor practice? 'Not gonna have a stealer sticker on my car, either - not on the car, not on the license plate - nowhere. 'First thing I did to 81 300D I bought from 90-year-old friend years ago was to use dental floss to cut through glue behind stealer metal badge on trunk. 'Don't remember what mild solvent I used to remove rest of glue, but I got it off fairly readily. Color of car was ivory (623) and was 18+ years old; paint behind badge was ever so slightly darker than rest of car, but I "blended" it very nicely with rubbing compound; 'quickly got so it was not noticeable at all. In '85, I helped older son buy a new Toyota little sport something (GT or GTS?); 'took stealer a few weeks to get the car; I told salesman, "Don't put a sticker on it; if you do, I'm gonna be damned mad." When salesman called to say they had just gotten the car and that it would be ready in coupla hours, I reminded the salesman, "Don't put a sticker on it." When we pulled into the lot, first thing I saw was the sticker on the trunk. I asked salesman, "Didn't I tell you I was gonna be damned mad if you put a sticker on it?" He replied, "Oh, we put stickers on all of our cars." My reply, "But in a few minutes, it won't be YOURS. It'll come off as soon as we get home." They've never gotten another penny from me. If it's just the stick on type, I'm sure you could get it off, and then use a mild compound to flatten out, and remove any glue. I also tell the dealer when I get a new car, "NO DEALER STICKERS" on my car, unless you want to send me a cheque monthly for helping out with your advertising! If it's a used vehicle on the lot, as I've bought before, I just carefully remove them with a carpenters razor blade, compound, then wax. Can't even see where the sticker has been. I've never done it on a car more than a couple of years old, so after that, differences in paint shade may happen, due to fading. I'm just not a sticker of any type kinda guy. I think with a new Benz, there is a no charge delete option, to remove all the model badging. I know BMW offer it. The times I've seen it, it here, it's often to try and conceal that the entry level car was purchased. My understanding, in Germany, it is more common for the higher end models to opt for the option, to be more stealthy. I tend to prefer the low profile, don't flaunt it approach myself. Re: [MBZ] Enjoyable lunch
That's almost as good and the summer student we had at Foresty Canada the last year I was up there. He was driving a dual fuel Lada (aka Fiat 131, Russian version) and decided to go visit family in Michigan. Not only that, he had two sets of valid plates on the car (BC which had front and rear and NorthWest Territories -- rear only). Naturally, the car quit on him about an hour south of Sault Ste Marie. He sat on the side of the road for 5 hours because no one would stop, had to have it towed back to Canada (no parts for Ladas in the US, of course, not even Fiat parts, for that matter) and then they didn't want to let him in because it was double registered. College kids, eh? What a blast when they aren't your kids! Peter On Nov 9, 2010, at 3:46 PM, WILTON wrote: I agree wholeheartedly. Well, it gets 25 mpg, but then again, it only has 2 cylinders. Must be pretty honk'n cylinders out of a Merlin or something though, as it's a 3.2 litre! hee hee I don't know a lot about the series run, but I know the early ones had all kinds of problems. Then again, at $3000, if you do the work, and Rusty has parts for it, it "might" work out to be pretty economical motoring for you. Exactly, but I usually buy in the small 5 packs, and get taken for a ride with the price. OK Don, I'll be doing the same job shortly on my '95. Looks like if you remove the spring link (no spring compressor required, just jack stands and a floor jack), then you'll have access to press out the old and press in the new. If you fabricate sleeves and pieces to work with the Harbor Freight ball joint press, I'd be happy to rent them or purchase them from you. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of OK Don Sent: Sunday, November 07, 2010 8:40 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 124 rear "spring link" and "supporting link" R&R But - do you need a spring compressor to do the job? I would guess, like most painting gadgets that are marketed to amateurs, that you would have mediocre results. If they were really so great, the pros would use them, but they don't, they pinstripe by hand. Same with professional house painters, they don't use all those edging gadgets or even tape most of the time. They have a good brush and they cut in around trim and fixtures by hand. Re: [MBZ] Enjoyable lunch
Being white cars, I don't think fading would be as big a deal than if the paint was darker. That's not to say I don't still want the twin turbo V12 engine under the hood, I just don't want the Ferrari guys to see what's about to hit them! hee hee. Thanks for the recommendation, Barry. I may do the Cibie upgrade for the 126, although I'm more likely to go for the Euros if I can find a set cheap with the wipers and everything, because I'm trying to get that car back to Euro stock (before the gray-market import conversion). I wish the Cibie upgrade was possible on the 124s! Why did M-B have to use that weird trapezoidal lens shape for the inset DOT lights? The standard rectangular sealed beams like on the US 126 would have worked just as well (or poorly). I keep seeing references to fuses and headlights. Is that not considered poor practice? My recollection is that one should use circuit breakers for headlights in the hope that they will re-set themselves if there is a momentary problem and not just burn out and leave you in the dark. Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Mercedes Benz technical assistance 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2.7 litre diesel
If the center tube fails in such a way as to render the seal between the lower full flow filter and the upper bypass section ineffective, the oil will short-circuit back to the oil pan, resulting in low or non-existent oil pressure. That will wreck the engine in short order. There will be no external leakage. I'm not familiar with that particular part, but I do know that careless installation can dislodge the seal between the parts of the oil filter on other Benz diesels. The pictures linked above show the original oil filter cover and filter, along with a current part, which is obviously redesigned to eliminate the "ringed" yellow part. The breakage of the yellow part would be incidental to the cause of failure, which would be incorrect servicing of the engine. Re: [MBZ] Swapping a 5spd into my 87 300D
Difficult. It always is the first time... Took three hours to get the top bolt off the trans on Sat and by the end of it I was out of steam for bench pressing the trans into place. I had to adapt a clutch alignment tool from a 200sx one I had laying around and didnt manage to get it quite right... None of my helpers showed up on Sunday (their women had other plans for them) and I ended up putting the trans in by my self. Even after I finally got it in I managed to pinch the sound deadening material at the top, all bolts had to come loose again to pull that out. The DS was an issue, the 87 300d as the larger yoke and flex disks. I was dismayed to find this as I pulled the back half of the donor shaft from another 300. Last night I picked up the shaft from the shop. I had to pull the pedal assembly half off again to get the feed line from the reservoir back in. Then after I was done bleeding the clutch, it felt like some air was in there so I bled again and the hose popped off. Bled more and still pedal to floor, finally I zip tied the ends of the hose on the nipples and got it bled properly. Around 2am I took the maiden voyage. Completely different than my W123. I am so used to the gwagen clutch setup I have in there, this totally feels like a 240d clutch on a 617. Also the clutch pedal sits super high and the sweet spot is 1" or so from the top. I don't remember seeing the gasket on the slave cylinder which may account for it being so high, the friction disk was almost new. One thing I can say is that the rear end suspension RELLY needs work now :D -Rolf ps- and yes its a diesel, On 11/09/2010 07:31 AM, Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310 wrote: Rolf, How did it go? Re: [MBZ] Inspiration
Wilton - you're way ahead of me. Since I have the '95 'project' occupying one garage space, my wagon has been parked outside under an oak tree; the sap, leaves, acorns, etc take their toll, and I've only been able to wash/wax the car twice this year. I insisted on taking the time to wash/wax just before this trip, knowing that a dirty car on such a long trip would drive me nuts not to mention embarrassment if I happened to meet up with a fellow MB enthusiast along the way. Sadly the car may not get such attention for another six months or so. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of WILTON Sent: Saturday, November 06, 2010 1:43 PM To: mercedes list Subject: [MBZ] Inspiration Nice visit with Max and his family yesterday inspired/shamed me to take better care of the paint on my arctic white, nearly-showroom 87 300D. I was a bit embarrassed for them to see it in dire need of a proper cleaning and waxing. Yes, I've been a back-slider. 'Been running it through carwash and wiping it down with towel afterward, but I haven't really cleaned and waxed it properly in the 6+ years I've had it, so, though the paint still has no nicks, gouges, scratches, dents, dings, rust, etc., it has been looking quite "flat" for too long. I've spent about three hours so far today working on the rear section from rear doors aft; all of that area is now pristine and glistening - even the six years of exhaust film across the back has been removed (again, this is a WHITE car), and that area is white again - not light grey. I can get to much of it sitting on my walker; 'have to stand only to get to the higher horizontal surfaces and can touch or lean against the car for more stability. BTW, 'discovered a neat trick to keep white cleaner/wax film off the black trim areas; painters blue masking tape on those areas works beautifully. Re: [MBZ] Enjoyable lunch
Headlamp wipers were removed; PO had installed Euro headlights, mixed set of Bosch and Hella, and used wipers that didn't really fit right but he kludged them in. I struggled with keeping them properly aligned, and when I installed two new headlights from Rusty, found the issue when I tried to move the wiper motors. The shafts at too long, requiring a spacer on the shaft to move the motor back, which moves the motor out of reach of the tab-stop that keeps the motor from rotating when the wipers encounter resistance. I have not had time to make a proper spacer and figure out a good solution to keeping the motors from rotating. I'm tempted to get the hood nozzle fittings for the windshield washer from pick-n-pull, and mount those below the headlights so I only get the fluid squirting action to clean the lights. Might be easier than motor/wiper/fluid set-up, and lighter too. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2010 9:12 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Enjoyable lunch Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310 wrote: > Here's a couple of pix from our rendezvous; Interesting pair of white 124s.
