In 201 when I, bought friend's '81 300D, I stopped by Auto Zone one day to
see what sort of trailer hitches they might have - not that they might
have

one made for an '81 300D, but that I may be able to see what they had to
help me with ideas for fabricating my own. Low and behold, there was one
in

a box that had been opened! I was able to pull the pieces out to examine
them individually and realized immediately that I could use several key
pieces of it to quickly and easily adapt it to fit my 300D; even removed
it
from the 123 in '04 and installed it on my '87 300D. Attachment to the
123
was via a cross bar perpendicular to the drawbar receiver and four bolts
though an additional

steel plate on trunk floor between rear edge of spare tire well and rear
wall of trunk. Attachment in 124 has the same cross bar attachment to the
trunk floor plus another cross bar and two more bolts through a box member
at very rear of trunk with second steel steel plate on trunk floor.
Forward
end of draw bar receiver is attached to rear wall of spare tire well in
123 and 124
via two short angle bars that I fabricated (the only parts plus coupla
bolts and steel plates
not included in the box found a Auto Zone). 'Bent the downward legs of
the
two short angle bars to fit contour of spare tire well. Drawbar on the
123 installation was easily removable; not so on the 124 because of
restricted access to bolt through the drawbar.

Photos attached.

BTW, 'Noticed in hitch photos evidence of some rust forming on the hitch
between the drawbar and its receiver; its exposure to salty roads is nil,
but it obviously gets wet occasionally. I'll spray it good with
additional sealant to reduce water entry between drawbar and receiver.

european style receiver hitches. They are nice in that when you are

I've looked, and I don't seem to be able to find any on-line, although

I agree, a euro hitch would be desirable. Might try fleabay.de, or
find a listing of german junkyards. A german equivalent to
car-part.com would be nice.

Re: [MBZ] 240D tow hitch or wagon?

2012-11-09 Thread MG
I have the standard relays that are used in the MB. Those that I
used in the version that I drew up. That's why I drew it like
that. I thought that Craig was going to use the same relays
that's why I asked about it cause I was beating my head against
the wall and still couldn't figure out how he did it with three
SPDT relays. I didn't know from the schematic if that was one
wild relay that had that required configuration or the two DPDT
and one SPST. The relays I have are headlight relays so they will
definitely be strong enough to do the trailer lights.

Will have to keep my eyes open for one of those little Bosh
wiring books. I have one on general automotive systems by Bosch
which is really interesting. Has all kinds of info on fuel
injection, brakes and so on.

Those relays can be any DPDT (double-pole, double-throw; or
2-form-C) relays. Well, the one could be a SPDT (single-pole,
double-throw; or form-C), but the other two need to be DPDT.

For tail/brake lights, I would use no less than contacts rated
for 5 amp. 10 amp would be my preferred minimum.

Does that help?

If you let us know what relays you have now, we could let you

I believe the schematic can be built with the standard MB Ice cube
relays if you have a junker, or access to a junkyard with 124/126,
210 or similar. At lease, that is how I envision building one.

AH. I see. But that or those, I can't tell, is/are not standard

to where to get this or how much it would cost. Do you have any

The numbers are standard euro terminal numbers on the relays. Same
as the numbers on the ones in mercedes service manual.

 30= + power
85 + 86 are the coil connections. I don't think it matters which is
grnd and which is the + signal from the car's lights.

 87 is NC
 87a is NO

The power from 30 feeds to 87a and 87 depending on if the coil is
energized or not. What I like about this is if the trailer's lights
have a short then it just blows the fuses on either the power line
to 30 or on the light circuits.

In looking at the problem, I figured out how to do it with only 3
relays.

You want to implement the logic:

Trailer Lamp = (NOT Brake AND Car Turn) OR (Brake AND NOT
Car Turn)

That comes from the Veitch Diagram:

 BrakeTurnTrailer Lamp
   00 0
   01 1
   10 1
   11 0

Generating (NOT Brake) from (Brake) takes one relay and
generating each

of the two (NOT Turn) from the two (Turn) takes two relays.

I think it cannot be done with two relays.

Or a TTL chip driven by a three-terminal regulator and voltage
converters, but relays would be more rugged.

There's a reason that 4000-series CMOS is still
in use, even 40 years after its introduction.
No regulator, no voltage converters. You'd need
one 4070 XOR and a Darlington relay driver, and
one relay. Maybe some resistive protection on
the inputs might be called for, too.

You'll find it, for example, in the lamp-out
warning module, the alarm, the HVAC, etc.

In 2001 when I, bought friend's '81 300D, I stopped by Auto Zone one day
to
see what sort of trailer hitches they might have - not that they might
have

one made for an '81 300D, but that I may be able to see what they had to
help me with ideas for fabricating my own.

Forward
end of draw bar receiver is attached to rear wall of spare tire well in
123

and 124
via two short angle bars that I fabricated (the only parts plus coupla
bolts

and steel plates
not included in the box found a Auto Zone). 'Bent the downward legs of
the
two short angle bars to fit contour of spare tire well. Drawbar on the
123

installation was easily removable; not so on the 124 because of restricted
access to bolt through the drawbar.

I am going to build a combiner made of 4 relays to combine the
brake and blinker lights. This will be wired into the wires from
the car lights to the trailer plug.

You could also buy one from Walmart for $20. The only problem
with that one is that if you have a short in the wiring of your
trailer at any time it will kill the electronics in that unit and
there goes $20.

I added a separate light on each side for the turn signals on our trailer.

Now we have a Big Red Van (BRV (tm)) that has a Class 3 hitch receiver on
it, so we use that to do the towing.

We had a bumper/trunk floor hitch on our '72 220D/8 and pulled some heavy
things, like when I attached the trailer and Shirley filled it with trash
that had been left by the previous owner at our place. Unbeknownst to me,
a lot of it was concrete rubble. When I first tried to move the car and
trailer, I exclaimed to her, "What did you put in it?!!!" She pointed out
the concrete rubble. That was real slow going, but we made it to the dump.

Yes Manfred, that would be good. I'm interested in the euro style with the j

it? Seems like Oris is a good brand. Let me know what you find. Prob up to $75

That's because what's the floor in the sedan is a fuel tank in
the wagon. And the fuel tank isn't a good place to attach a
hitch, even with ShoeGo to seal the bolts.

SF steel? As in Santa Fe?

When I saw Wilton's post, I recalled I had some information about a W123
hitch. I've attached the picture. Hopefully the email will be under 40k

What you need is to look in the EPC and get the factory installation
instructions, then you'll have pictures and rough diagrams to give you the
design concept.

So it seems like Oris was a German manufacturer of trailer hitches for our cars
but I'm not sure if they manufactured the factory hitches.
I'm also trying to figure out if a factory hitch was made for US spec cars .

Re: [MBZ] 240D tow hitch or wagon?

2012-11-05 Thread MG
I think Max is talking about the hitch on a wagon and you are
talking about one on a sedan. The one that attaches to the floor
is in a sedan and the bumper attach point one is on a station
wagon, as far as I have seen anyway. I'm also thinking that the
diff between a euro hitch and an American hitch is that the
American hitch is a at the end a flat bar with a hole in it and a
pin with a ball bolted through the hole. Whereas the euro hitch
is a curved bar (think J laying on it's back with half the curved
part cut off) coming out from under the bumper with a ball at the
vertical tip of the bar.

I put an old hitch that I had for a VW bug on my 83 300D. it
worked out just right. The hitch originally fastened to the bars
that hold the bottom of the transmission and engine mount plate
to the body. I bolted that to the bottom of the spare tire
depression in the trunk with a metal plate on the inside to
provide better support. The back part is bolted to the bottom of
the bumper. I have towed quite a bit of weight on a Harbor
Freight trailer. The one with the 12" rims. I like the bigger
wheels better then those little donuts.

So the American hitch attaches to sheetmetal trunk floor and euro
hitch to bumper mounts?
If I were to find some euro bumpers would they just bolt on? If
not is the conversion easy?

euro bumpers and convert your car.

Hi Dimitri,

couple of

european style receiver hitches. They are nice in that when you are
not towing, the ball is removable and therefore is unable to scape
copious amounts of skin from your shins. You can also mount a bike
rack or small cargo platform if you desire.

I've looked, and I don't seem to be able to find any on-line,
although

I KNOW that I've seen w123 sedans in Germany with that setup.

I agree, a euro hitch would be desirable. Might try fleabay.de, or
find a listing of german junkyards. A german equivalent to
car-part.com would be nice.

Looks very similar to both my euro hitches (123 & 124). Short arms go inside
car, parallel to direction of travel, in or near uni-body "rails" for lack of a

Curt's sedan hitch is different, bolts to the bottom of the spare tire well.

The factory hitch bolts to the support members under the floor of the
trunk. Holes are already there, it's a standard frame hitch. A
bumper hitch won't work.

Any place that makes custom hitches should be able to work one up for
you.

No idea, but I suspect not easy/cheap. You'd need to do a side-by-side
comparison with a euro car to really find out, unless someone else has BTDT.

Same here, but mine is rated for 1700 kg. I use it to tow my sailboat, which
is between 2000 and 2500 pounds. Tows just fine, as long as the boat is way

Re: [MBZ] 240D tow hitch or wagon?

2012-11-05 Thread Dieselhead
OOH! If that was anywhere NEAR close, I's snap it up right away.
Going price is 2-3 X this price.

My 190D has a trailer hitch, its bolted to the trunk floor. If I
were going to tow any amount with it I'd reinforce with a big plate
in the trunk. I've used the 190D a couple times to shuffle my
snowmobile trailer around, its way more handy than the pickup. I've
never towed down the road with it as I've never figured out wiring
the lights for the trailer.

What you want is this: http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/cto/3378717517.html
which I've seriously considered a couple times. It would allow us to
camp with the much better fuel economy of the 190D vs the pickup...

The Coleman Versa trailers are actually kind of sought after and
this one seems pretty good.

daughter's Volvo 240DL wagon, I came across a couple of european style receiver
hitches. They are nice in that when you are not towing, the ball is removable
and therefore is unable to scape copious amounts of skin from your shins. You
can also mount a bike rack or small cargo platform if you desire.

I've looked, and I don't seem to be able to find any on-line, although I KNOW
that I've seen w123 sedans in Germany with that setup.

Best,

Jon

I agree, a euro hitch would be desirable. Might try fleabay.de, or find a
listing of german junkyards. A german equivalent to car-part.com would be nice.

Versatrailer was worth more than $125 last time I shopped for one.
Fiberglass cover is worth about as much as a versatrailer, but this one was
damaged. Still a bargain even without the cover.

Towing: sure. You lose acceleration, but if you are staying off the
highway then it's just like dragging an extra body or two around in
the back seat. Now, when you start to carry extra weight you're
making the body strain in different directions, but you aren't
planning on doing that.

Trailer hitch: U-Haul will charge you but it isn't unconscionable. I
have a U-Haul hitch that I got from the junkyard for the van, it isn't
beautiful but it has been strong enough to keep me comfortable.

Trailer: http://www.w123-hannover.de/html/fotos.html ---might be a
little overkill... Or get a small 4x8 flatbed, easy to buy at Harbor
Freight or the like, and you can store it easily as well. :)

However, for $15/day you can rent a 4x8 enclosed aluminum trailer at
U-Haul, I've found that to be the most economical so far - storage
space is precious and keeping a trailer roadworthy is a pain.

Well, sure. I use the van for towing. You could always buy a Unimog
and carry your 240D in the back, then you could tow whatever you want!

Ditto Loren and Clay, get a light duty hitch installed, find a cheap light
utility trailer. If you're only hauling a few hundred pounds, that car will do

2012-11-04 Thread clay monroe
You should be able to get a hitch in there. It would likely be mounted under
the trunk, straddling the fuel tank and bolted to the sheet metal of the trunk.
U-haul shop figures it out. My sister had one added to her 1999 volvo wagon
this summer for about $400. Might need all of a 1.5" ball, but you may need to
upgrade the springs in the rear for heavy hauling so the tongue does not drag
the back end down. Since you are going to be pretty close to the ground, you
would be able to use those HF trailers with bagel wheels.
