Yes I looked at it in person, detailed in the first post. Copart cancelled the
bids I guess because seller didn’t respond. It’s up again in a couple of days.

I was looking at a Saturn Ion, not really damaged, clean title, runs and
drives but 180k and looked like it was not taken care of.

Starting bid $200 BIN 650.
Last week it went $200, and didn't sell.
This week it had a $200 prebid, and as soon as the auction went live,
the seller has released the minimum bid, and whoever kept bidding on it
got it for $200.

Just keep being the high bidder for 2-3 weeks, and the seller will give
up and let you have it.

[MBZ] Copart

2022-01-03 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I finally broke down and paid the $59 for a membership that would allow
me to bid. I wanted to bid on this:

https://www.copart.com/lot/66367701

I put in a prebid of $2200 (min bid) with a max of $3k.  Probably too
much but if it turns out to be decent and not need an engine like that
other one I had, might not be a bad deal.  Anyway, auction was today so
I watched it online.  It was odd some turd cars were selling for big
bucks and others I figured would bring a lot had hardly any action.
What I still can't figure out is there are bidders from all these 3rd
world countries throwing out big bids on these cars.  Most of the
bidders were from somewhere else.  Honduras, Nigeria, UAE, Russia, every
country you can think of.  Some of these bids I do not see how they
would make any money on them locally much less shipping them all over
the world.

Anyway, my prebid of $2200 was the only bid, its awaiting seller
response as they have a buy it now of $4000.  No way this is worth that
as it would be $5k after copart fees.  I went and looked at it in person
today.  It needs tires, some interior cleaning, and of course a rear
glass but the engine looks clean without oil blowing everywhere, coolant
looks good, oil level good.   Battery completely dead.  No mention if it
runs or not but I would say there is a good chance it does.

Yes, they are. I have been doing a lot of buy back campaigns for dealers as
well. I have seen several deals where a customer buys a car and drives it for a
couple of weeks or a month and decides they do not like it. They then trade it
back in for something else or just sell it outright for more than they paid. It
is insane. We are in for a huge crash when the bubble bursts.

Copart has now changed their membership to require a annual fee of
something like $59 per year.  They dropped mine down to the new free
version which I guess lets you search cars but you can't have saved
searched, or bid on anything of course.  I guess I am done with Copart
now.  It has probably been at least a year since anything has been
selling for anything remotely reasonable.  If things were normal and you
could still find decent deals there I might consider paying the $59, but
not now.

FLUAPS (since retired and closed the business) gave me his login info.
If I bought a car, I called him for the total CoPart cost, and took him
$$ for CoPart+$300+TTL.

Then he'd pay CoPart and print out pickup papers for me.
I'd fetch the car and the title from the CoPart yard (the 2000 mile
Cruze in Cleveland was a bit of a journey in the ML350) and he'd process
the title after I gave it to him. The time I bought salvage, he sat on
the title until I had it repaired and inspected, that way it went
straight from salvage titled to Farmer's to Rebuilt titled to me.

There are buying services (brokers) who do similar for you, but it
usually involves a three digit upfront fee to register you as a bidder
for their business.

2019-06-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The situation as it was would probably have lead a person looking at it
casually to think head gasket.

It does need to be sorted out as it appears to have been sitting a while. I
know the blower motor needs to be fixed and the ac does not kick on. As far as
cap goes not sure if it’s the right one or if it’s working. It will probably
get replaced anyway

pressure cap on the radiator for that vehicle? , and is the cap working

I really do not think it has a blown head gasket.  I pulled the cap on
the expansion tank and they had it filled completely to the top, no room
for expansion.  With it pulled I started it up and got it up to temp.
The level rose that 1/2" from where it was to the very top of the

gasket.  When you rev it up, no bubbles and it does not blow coolant
out.  When you let off the pedal and it returns to idle, the level of
coolant would surge up slightly with some flowing out the opening
because it is overfull.  This seems normal to me as the flow of coolant
slows down and surges up for a second.  With the cap off the hose never
got hard, which one would expect.  Next step will be to drain some of
the coolant out to where the tank is at the half way mark where it

If you have a head gasket leak, you will get bubbles and surging of coolant
out of the fill neck as you advance throttle, the surges of coolant
will increase in volume.
At low idle, coolant will bubble and gurgle over the fill neck... If it
doesn't, likely head gaskets are good.. maybe.

What happened with engine temps when you drove it? Typically, combustion
gas in coolant will cause high engine coolant temp also.. another indicator.

could potentially have a leaking head gasket or head issue. For the 6.5 new
heads are fairly cheap.

Also, this one is a bit of a mystery. Truck has a CA title and carfax
shows 2 owners always in CA. Last carfax entry was from 03, nothing since
then. Tires on it look brand new but have 07 date. I see an old mouse nest

OK doesn’t require a broker, I believe.

Many states, like FL, do, however. I drive by the local CoParts yard all the
time, but never bother to look. For what I would pay a broker it’s rarely worth
it. Probably cheaper to get a dealer’s license.

I saw something like that outside of Dallas some years ago. They had built a
whole town and then the market went bust. There were developments all over the
place but no body living there. Very light traffic and importantly to me no
restaurants.Strangely the only hotel was an extended stay. I don't remember
which chain but it was a pretty nice hotel.

What I found weird was that you could head out to the “suburbs” and would be
surrounded by all this developed property that had empty buildings on it. I
distinctly recall seeing national chains like Wendy’s all boarded up, yet the
buildings and property looked like it was brand new. It was almost creepy.

And then as quickly as suburbia ended you would see the classic AK shack on a
piece of property with the weathered cedar and the elk or moose rack fastened
to the gable above the front door and the beater pickup truck parked in front.

The contrasts were surreal.

The same boom/bust cycle is going on today.

While dragging her dog around the neighborhood (walking the dog) I pick up a
flyer on a house for sale. No pricing, just the normal realtor gibberish.
SWMBA gets home and all excited that we should troll the interwebz to learn
more about the six homes featured on the slip. The bulk of them have been on
the market for about a year and dropped prices by 10-15%. The homes all needed
“attention”. The newer (80’s/90s) home sport original features (not
renovated), the older homes have good bones but were last upgraded about 30
years ago when somebody was flush with cash, or had spruced it up before
selling around the time of the Exxon Valdez spill.

There is no crush or demand for commercial space. Lots of for lease signage
all over town. Lots of empty store fronts in the CBD. Very minimal new
construction going on, but for the few extended stay chains. There is even an
arsonist who likes to target defunct sushi shops and other empty spaces. What
commercial space there is looks very long in the tooth. Aged strip malls with
long time, low rent tenancy, or big box stores that have been there for a long
time and are begging for updating.

Going to the GABC is a right of passage for the first visit to ANC. It harkens
back to the days of the pipeline and the gold rush mentality of those times.

I can recall being up there in the 80s after the pipeline was completed, and
how badly the economy crashed. You would drive out into the ‘burbs of ANC and
see block after block of empty office buildings, shuttered businesses, etc. It

Re: [MBZ] Copart SL500

2019-05-01 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I fully appreciate all your advice. I am trying to be as well kempt as
allowable. I am supposed to go out to dinner for Wednesday. I inquired as to
dress code. She says I will be fine. I want to know the caliber of the
establishment, as it will be a meal with another attorney chum of hers. I
figure formal. I should dress well. Alaska is the land of hiking boots, jeans
and fleece jackets. But twice she has tried to wrangle me into black tie
events with assurance that there will not really be black ties. There were no
tails, but ties and tuxedo were very evident. I had to leave my very formal
wear back home, so it was business suit. Even got a new shirt and bow tie.

As for old cars, she is not interested. Very practical gal. And sort of
clueless at times. Blue collar upbringing and offended by the class
distinctions she is now expected to conform to. Living in the bush seems to
fit her better than hob nobbing with the powerful in a Tech Town like Seattle
where there were people with money and the need to dress well.

I will return to my bottom feeder cars and she can drive her camper

clay.

let your hair and beard grow, practice saying  "my name Jose Jimenez"
"No ingles" and asylum, (and acting like you don't understand anything)

She needs you to appear to be dignified and respectable. If she can

share with her friends and co-workers, that her husband collects classic
Mercedes Benz, then that will have value to her. She does not want to tell
folks about your hobby because she is embarrassed by your bottom feeder
cars. You need to move on beyond free junkers unless you are prepared to
quickly invest enough in them to make them appear to be respectable classic
vehicles. That means good paint and upholstery etc.

Randy,

Just an observation on my part….

I totally understand where you’re coming from, but the likelihood that Clay’s
spouse works in an oak paneled office with associates wearing three piece
tailored suits and Italian loafers or Allen Edmonds wingtips is slim, based on
my experience working in Alaska. Even more so as they’re not in a “major
metropolis”, like Anchorage. I’m betting the dress code at her place of
business is far more relaxed. Alaska is a very, very different place than the
Lower 48 or for that matter, any Canadian province (excluding the Yukon,
Northwest Territories and Nunavut, of course.)

And while I’m not one to judge, my wife may or may not approve of my hobbies at
times, but she understands that they’re something I get great pleasure and
enjoyment out of and she accepts that. Granted, I don’t have 2-3 older Mercedes
in need of work or repairs other than my finnie, but if we lived in a place
where I could have such things, I would and she would be accepting of it (as
long as they weren’t parked on the front lawn, of course.) I might even go for
the green and white W126 German police car replica….

I believe I suggested all of this to you before, but I will say it again
as a reminder.

She is a lawyer. She works with people who judge her by the way she
dresses and what she drives, and where she lives, etc.

If you want to collect old Mercedes, then they need to be objects of
beauty. You need to stop creating green police cars and such.

Find a good example of a big Mercedes sedan that can be made to look
like it has real significant value. Black or Silver are likely preferred
colors.

It needs to evoke respect. You do not want to appear to be a bottom
feeder. You need to appear to be the sort of gentleman who has
impeccable taste, and prefers classic vehicles rather than the present
throw away vehicles. Dress the part as well. You need to appear to be
either coming or going to or from the country club or the yacht club.
Tweed jacket, penny loafers etc. If you have never read the book, Dress
for Success, then find a copy and read it. I believe the writer's name
was John Molloy and he did research into the attitudes of people based
upon the way they dressed etc. I believe he wrote subsequent books -
Dress for Success for Women and Live for Success or some such that also
looked at vehicle colors etc. You may not agree with all that he
suggests but I suspect it will go a long way toward sorting out the
issues with your wife if you try to see the situation from her point of
view and work towards a goal of having her appreciate your affection for
classic Mercedes. It will no doubt also improve her level of respect for
you.

She needs you to appear to be dignified and respectable. If she can
share with her friends and co-workers, that her husband collects classic
Mercedes Benz, then that will have value to her. She does not want to
tell folks about your hobby because she is embarrassed by your bottom

I have been banned from working on the cheep. She accosted me last night
because I had the hood up with the battery on the charger. Just trying to keep
it functional so #2 boy will be able to find a summer job when he comes back
from university in a week.

Her crazy plan is to sell the cheep and replace it with some pop up camper
thing. That it would fit in her garage. The Cheep has a hard time fitting
now. Removing the unused work out equipment and stack of winter tires will not
fit a Great White North pickem-up vehicle in that tiny space. A chubby
suburban would be nose at the man door and tail keeping the big door from
closing

I saw that one.  Might not be too badly damaged for cheap.  Hood, fender
bumper might fix it up, though of course those parts are not
particularly cheap.  The top is probably not working so it has gotten
ratty inside.  Fixed up it might be worth $3k if the top is toast, and
no hardtop.

Re: [MBZ] Copart SL500

2019-04-30 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I found the CoParts yard in town. That will spell disaster. SWMBA was driving
and I saw the sign, I exclaimed in a most happy manner, which caught her
attention. I had to explain what a superb find this was, as I could now find
all manner of damaged cars to drag home for a mere pittance. That when she
sells my Seattle home, we would get some vacant land for me to play with the
cars.

I think I caused some involuntary bladder leakage.

Re: [MBZ] CoPart weirdness

Understood, But if I’m bottom feeding, $200 might make the difference between
whether or not it’s worth it.

Good to know. Thanks for pointing that out.

Too bad their system doesn’t seem to discern what your status is as a bidder,
or if it does, not until you try and place a bid.

Interesting. For Florida it says “broker” for private individuals. That
would suggest that I can’t bid on anything titled in Florida unless I use
a broker? Or am I misinterpreting this?

Well if it’s something worth pursuing that you are interested in, you just bid
thru one of the brokers and they charge a couple hundred for that.

You really need to review the license requirement page. It will list who
can bid on what based on state and based on what sort of title it has. In
some states, public can bid on anything. In other states, public can only
bid if it has a clear title. In others, public can only bid if it has a
salvage title. This does not seem to depend on what state the auction if
physically located in, it depends on what state the vehicle is titled in.
For example, I once had a car I was bidding on in Texas which public can
only bid on salvage title vehicles. This vehicle had a clear Oklahoma
title so I was able to bid even though it Texas I could not. I could bid
because the title was in OK. I ended up getting outbid though.
