Thanks, Grant, I’ll do that. I’m putting together a list of some things I’ll
provision it with, like a cargo area mat, first aid kit, high visibility safety
vest (you can get these from Mercedes in a nice little rolled up package pretty
cheap) and spare bulbs, etc.

The Mercedes safety vest part number is 000 583 43 00. They’re about $8-$9 from
a discount/online dealer. I have one in all of my cars.

Thanks, Rick. With Mitch mentioning something about rear window hinges I
inspected these closely and found nothing of concern.

I’m hoping it’s a good choice. Seems like a solid vehicle, and I’ve got
experience with both Fords and Mazdas of this era, so if I do have to wrench on
it I’m not worried about anything being out of my range of ability or skill.

One thing of note I found odd - these vehicles don’t have gas caps! Apparently,
there’s a shutter in the filler neck that seals everything off, so a cap would
be redundant.

More as I know it…

Made the offer. $4700, he accepted. We’re going down around 12:30 to give him a
deposit to hold it until Monday. We have video tellers at the credit union on

2020-07-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So we went and checked out the 2012 Escape with 137k, two owners, V6, etc.

Very clean car, well maintained, clearly a Ford lease before the current owner
purchased it for his high school aged daughter who put approximately 3,000
miles on it driving to/from home, school and work.

It’s been maintained by a local indie shop I know that caters to a well to do
clientele with a mix of nice domestic and high line cars. I’ll check in with
them tomorrow if they’re open and get the dirt on this car. Owner had all his
records so I pretty much saw everything he had done to it, all by the book and
then some. He has detailed records on it showing it’s averaged around 25 mpg,
which is pretty good with the six and considering daughter’s driving was all
suburban surface streets at or below 45 mph.

They had the sucky Ford telematics yanked and a nice double-DIN Pioneer unit
installed professionally to the point where all of the steering wheel buttons
work with it. It’s nicely done.

It’s got a couple dings and a few stains in the carpet, but nothing a good
Martha’ing can’t resolve.

The guy bought the car for his daughter and clearly cared for it in a manner
you expect.

I’m going to call him in the morning and pull the trigger on it. I think it
will suit the son just fine, he fits in it well and liked it.

If it were me I'd go with the Chevy. Buicks just seem to be your

What about a Ford Fusion? They have a 3.5l V6 option, seem to be about
in your price range if you're looking at something in the neighborhood

$5000 or less
Full size four door sedan
Six cylinder engine for economy

Toss me some suggestions besides the Buick. I’m pretty out of touch with this

Got a line on what might be a decent prospect for the eldest:

My only real concern is that it’s a six cylinder rather than the four. Mileage
won’t be as good. On the good side, it’s priced well and has a good history.
Leased vehicle for five years, then the current owner bought it and their
daughter drove it in high school. That and it’s the last year of the second
generation, and has some of the lowest reports of problems as a result.

Even better, it’s only about five miles from my house.

The Ford 3.5 Ecoboost V6 has good reviews for the most part. If oil
changes have not been done on schedule watch for timing chain wear
(this will set a code at some point).

https://www.underhoodservice.com/ford-3-5l-ecoboost-common-problems/

It's also a Coil-on-Plug ignition which can be a PITA as it's six things
that could fail instead of one. But I don't know that this is a
particularly common trouble spot.

Hondas have a reputation for value that they don't IMHO deserve. So I
think a CRV or Pilot will be more expensive for the same utility as an
Escape. Again IMHO.

I'm not aware of which is better, other than I'd assume 2gen is stiffer
and more crashworthy. Just pointing out that 2008-2010 is two different
cars.

Shortly after they bought it, before it had 100 megameters on the odo, the
glass hatch hinges failed. I got a good deal from a dealer out of state,
paid about $140 for the pair. The main hatches are good, apparently the
hinges that hold the glass to the hatch are not durable (you can either
open the hatch, or open the glass window in the hatch). I'd hope 2G fixed
the bad hinges.

Aside from sunroof leaks, hatch hinges, and rust, it was a pretty good car
for the five years they used it. I don't think it was really acceptable
for the sunroof and hatch to fail when they did.

They bought a 2017 Subaru last month. 10k miles, the selling dealer put
new tires on it and changed the oil as part of used car prep. Originally
registered in NYC, so 10k must include a lot of idling if it was a daily
driver. I've never seen new tires on an Outback with less than 11k on the
odo before. I hope they put 0W20 in it when they changed the oil.

I do too, but the more information you have, the better choices you can make.
Obviously a car with squeaks and rattles may get more complaints, but when you
have major issues (e.g. GM 3.4 intake gasket failures, Honda transmission
failures, etc.) it's good to have a heads up. Yes, any car can be repaired with
upgraded parts (3.5L Mercedes inline six diesel, 722.6 conductor plate), but
the point here is getting your son a reliable, gas and go vehicle. If a vehicle
has known failure points, they become very apparent in an internet search.

I saw that they’ve had issues with shock mounts and rust, but everything I
would consider that’s down here would be Florida cars.

Are you aware of any issues between first and second gen models? That is, are
first gens better than second gens?

I’m still researching the vehicle, but since Kaleb mentioned the Equinox I’ve
started looking at them, too. Not sure he’s big on a crossover, but then again,
I don’t think he’s that particular to begin with…

Which platform, 2008 Escape or 2009+ Escape?
My neighbors just gave away their 2008 LTD (leather) for rust issues, the
main problem being the upper shock mounts rotted away (there's a patch
panel for that as it turns out, but they didn't want to pay for the body
work). It's a first generation Escape.
2009 are second gen.

Moral to the story: don't pay a premium for an older Escape with only 60k
miles, when those 60k miles happened inside the city of Toronto. As a
matter of fact, it's not a bad idea to avoid Canadian cars altogether.

I don’t have an issue with an auction car if I had access to the auction. I
don’t, nor do I know anyone who does, unfortunately.

Surprisingly, the few private sellers I’m seeing are pricing their cars pretty
reasonably. I presume that’s because they either want to move it or have done
at least a minimal amount of research and are trying to beat the dealer’s
prices.

I hate to say it, but I take Internet reviews with a large block of salt. Since
those who are most disgruntled are the likeliest to complain, the data these
sites present is hardly empirical. How many of these cars were sold? What’s the
percentage of failures? Etc., etc. There is certainly some validity to them,
but I wouldn’t allow them to sway my opinion unless it was a really egregious
example.

The platform and drivetrain is proven and has been in service for some time, so
I’m comfortable with the choice.

Thanks!

What about a dealer auction car? Do you know anyone who has a dealers license
and would be willing to purchase a vehicle for you or with you at auction? I
know the sentiment is "ewe auction car", because you don't know what you're

Those 90s Malibus had their own bodies on the N platform (Achieva/Grand Am).
My mom had one, my cousin's future son in law drove a 4 door Cavalier.
One time I took Mom's Malibu (actually a Classic) to my cousin's shop, the
kid's fiance came over, and I tried to get my car parts out of the trunk
of his Cavalier.

The Impala was a RWD on the Caprice platform for a while, then it became
(and still is) Chevy's biggest FWD sedan. There was a squad car version of
the first generation, but the Crown Vic killed it in the marketplace,
before the Explorer/Tahoe/etc killed the sedans. I don't know if the FWD
Impala ever had a pushrod engine. One of my clients used to do delivery
work in a first gen FWD, I think it had a 3.5 engine. He put a junkyard
engine in it at around 250k, and swapped junkyard engines when they hit
about 200-300k. I think it had over 400k on the chassis when he quit
driving it.

If it were me I'd go with the Chevy. Buicks just seem to be your
grandparent's car. At least around here.

What about a Ford Fusion? They have a 3.5l V6 option, seem to be about
in your price range if you're looking at something in the neighborhood
of a 2010 model.

Thanks, Rick! This is the sort of advice I’m looking for. I really appreciate
this.

I had totally forgotten about the Avalon, and it’s a definite possibility. To
my point, I don’t pay attention to other cars, so a lot of what’s out there
just slides by me without being noticed. Just pointing out alternatives like
the Avalon out broadens the field, which is what I’m trying to do.

Probably on your street, haha.

Geez Dan, there are a lot of geezer mobiles near you.

Exactly. That’s what he needs, and he doesn’t care about what he drives for the
most part, although he does like the E320 CDI. But - he’s smart enough to
realize there’s no possible way he could afford to keep it on the road if he
had to pay for the repair and maintenance. This is important from a standpoint
of being self-aware.

Looks like the 3.8l was used until 2008, and in 2009 they changed to the 3.9l
with AFM. I may have to narrow my search criteria.

I really like the Buick idea. They are boring and reliable and should get
decent fuel economy. This is the route I recommended with the kid here but
they did not go for it. No idea why.

So I had a conversation with the so tonight and he’s on board with a Buick, as
he wants something large and a sedan. That effectively eliminates the Nissan,
as it’s smaller.

With this in mind, I’m wondering what other possibilities there might be in
this range? Here is my initial criteria:

$5000 or less
Full size four door sedan
Six cylinder engine for economy
Could be domestic or Asian (Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, etc.)
Probably looking for 2012 or older?

Toss me some suggestions besides the Buick. I’m pretty out of touch with this
stuff as I never look at it.

Thanks!
