I had the same problem of having used PageMill 3 and wanting to do a pure linux

I've downloaded and installed Bluefish which is a very good html editor. One
problem was that I've always used a WYSIWYG program. Having created a basic
page I then thought about Netscape Composer, re-opened page in that and played
some more. I've used gFTP to upload rather than Netscape.

My initial page is very basic and is on the link below - opens ok in Netscape.

Hope this helps

[newbie] General advice??

2000-02-20 Thread Joerg Reinhardt

Hi,
I already tryed to make my problem clear in a mail called "help!",
but it was six in the morning, I was frustrated and it got quit chaotic,
so here is my problem struktured a little more:
- basic "anatomie" of linux

I'm experienced with MS-DOS (not Windows!), so I know what a device,
a partition, a file, and a directory is, but, how do these work to
gether in Linux?
--can I open a directory from everywhere, or do I have to "go the path"?
--are there some directorys opened from everywhere, others not?
--why are all program starters appear in /usr/bin, can I change that
?(cause it's quite full, but there are other
 partitions...)
--where does a program starter know from, where to find the other parts,
wich belong to its program?
I ask these questions, cause my installed system is working well (exept
the printer), but programs I download from the net don't! No matter if
RPM or tar.gzip, I can unpack and install these programs, they create a
lot of directorys and files, but whatever I "clik" to the program isn't
starting.
This happend with Staroffice, the Realplayer and some other programs,
they all have starters in /usr/bin, wich don't seem to start anything
(maybe cause they "don't know" where to find?), and directorys do appear
spread over the harddrive, full with files, wich theme to belong to these
programs. I can see each "Button" of the real player as .jpg for instant,
but no "setup" or "install" or something like that, and "rvplayer" wich
appears in /.usr/bin, isn't doing anything. The same with staroffice

wich is connected to what?
In DOS each program was a "standalone" using the DOSthe same way
like the others to use the hardware, each program brought it's own graphic,
sound etc. But what about Linux, different parts do "use" or "suspend"
each other, but how?
-- what is the Kernel doing?
-- what is x-free doing
-- what is the window manager doing (or is it identical with xfree
?)
-- what is a desktop manager doing (or is it identic with the window
manager ?)
-- do different window/desktop managers have same "permission" or "power"
--can I do everything from KDE
or Gnome, or do I have to go to "Anotherlevel"
 --is there some absolute base
level like DOS under Windowns, were all other parts of the System refer
to?
I ask these questions, to find out:
--why my printer is printing the prntool testpage perfectly, but nothing
else
--why my graphics and sounds are great performing under KDE and horrible
under Gnome
--why my 5,76k-baud modem is doing not more than 1,5k-baud most of
the time (or is that normal
"internet-speed" and a problem of providers
and to many users? (I'm brand new in the net))
Well, I know, these are still many, many questions, but what shall I
do? I'm shure I can find all these Information in man-pages or HOWTOW's
or the manual, but these informations are absolutely chaotic struktered!
Wich HOWTO to read, if you have no idear where the problem lies?
please send me help and advice, or a hint where to find these "basic"-informations.

Partition magic is the best program to do what your
trying to do. I don't know for sure about the one that came with
linux. In order to get linux on D: not to mount the partitions on C:, you
can run 'linuxconf : File systems : access local drives' and then get rid of the
two partitions assumingly /dev/hda2 and /dev/hda3. For lilo, yse, you can
just edit your lilo.conf and then run lilo.
Good luck

Well... the /usr/doc/realplayer_5.0 directory is a nice one. Many pictures and
htm's in and an install notification, wich I already read before. It explains, how
to plug the player into the navigator, it also explains, how to use the player

Did I got something wrong?? Well shure I did, but what? Is the player only working
togeter with the navigator maybe?

Please give me further advice,

Hi Hershel ,

I am new to this site so I didn't see your previous
mail.

1 Is this a reasonable plan?

You plan sounds o.k. although I have never use
fdisk. I use PartitionMagic from Windows which is safe. But I would advise you
back up your data first.

2 What do I need to do to let my Linux on D
know that I removed partitions two from C (i.e. Linux on D currently mounts
those partitions)
unmount the drives from Linux or you may see some
error messages when you next boot up (having
removed the partitions). You do this from LinuxConf.attach local drives. You
will get the list of mountable drives. Click on the ones you want and delete
them.

3 Lilo currently is able to boot into NT and
Linux on C and Linux on D. I assume that I can just edit lilo.conf to
remove the Linux on C and then run lilo -v and lilo will be
happy. Not too clued up on LILO, but that sounds o.k.

Hope it helps,

Michael

When I initially installed Linux I just used
the program that comes on the CD for partitioning

P.S. Did you get a limited version of
PartitionMagic with your CDs. If so, look at it.

is your win98 not booting up?
use your win98 boot disk go to c: and do a
fdisk /mbr
from the command prompt then try rebooting and see what happens.
you should be able to get into windows if you put lilo in the boot sector.

another option is to use your boot disk for linux and do a re-install and
install linux and lilo agian. I would think that would update all the linux
files and allow things to function again.

Hi Adam

Add umask=0 option in /etc/fstab. Can be done from linuxconf too ("default
permission 000"). While you are at it, check "no program allowed to
execute",
no special dev. files support" and "no setuid progs. allowed" too.

[newbie] Using efax -- two issues

2000-02-20 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Using Linux-Mandrake 7.0

I am trying to use efax (with my Robotics 56k EXT modem) with KSendFax.
I have two problems:

1) I can use efax only as root. The usual permissions problem.

I have tried to "chmod /usr/bin/efax" but with no success. See below:

[sher@adsl-77-232-213 sher]$ efax

[sher@adsl-77-232-213 sher]$ efax
efax: Sat Feb 19 13:00:31 2000 efax v 0.9 Copyright 1999 Ed Casas
efax: Sat Feb 19 13:00:31 2000 efax v 0.9 Copyright 1999 Ed Casas
efax: 00:31 compiled Nov 28 1999 20:55:00
efax: 00:31 Error: can't open serial port /dev/modem: Permission denied
efax: 00:31 done, returning 2 (unrecoverable error)
[sher@adsl-77-232-213 sher]$

2) Efax insists on using /dev/modem instead of /dev/ttyS1.

Do I need to make a symbolic link between /dev/modem and /dev/ttyS1? If
so, just how do I do it. Just where is /dev/modem and /dev/ttyS1. I have
tried to find them with the "whereis" and "locate" commands but have not
been successful.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Re: [newbie] General advice??

2000-02-20 Thread Lance Borden

Joerg,

After browsing through the messages to and from you, I thought I might go ahead
and add a couple of thoughts.

Books:
The O'Reilly Running Linux is available in German as well as English.
I also picked up the book Linux fuer Anwender, but didn't find it very helpful.
As a newbie I've found Linux: Installation, Configuration, Use 2nd Ed. (by
Michael Kofler) to be my favorite. Just the other day I was in a bookstore and
noticed that it is also available in German. For me, it gave the best overview,
plus a lot of practical stuff that I've used.
Finally, if you haven't seen it, CHIP published a special Linux Ausgabe in
January, which also provides some useful tips.

Real Player:
No clue on that one

Starting programs:
My first try is to use the command line (right click on the kde desktop and
select Execute Command) or console. From anywhere, just type in the name of the
program. Seems like some programs "don't like" to be started from the icons in
kfm, but will then run from a command line. Not sure why, though.

2000-02-20 Thread Michael C

Hi,

I have just succesfully downloaded, configured and compiled the linux kernel

I have moved the new kernel image into the /boot directory within its own
subdirectory and updated the /etc/lilo.conf file. On booting up the computer
I get the following warning:

/boot/System.map has an incorrect kernel version.

Linux boots up o.k. except with this message being displayed a number of

Can any one tell me why this is happening and how I resolve the problem ?

Thank you in advance,

For those having trouble getting their printer to work in Printtools, go to
http://www.rpmfind.net and download APSfilter. It says it's for the Suse

downloaded and successfully installed it, and was instantly able to print!
No more headaches from Printtools, and I didn't even have to set it up 1st
- I just installed and started printing! The last time I had Mandrake
installed I was never able to get it to print, so this time, when I had to
reinstall Mandrake, I didn't even bother with Printtools, I immediately
went and got APSfilter. It seems to be more of a simple print utility than
what comes with MS Windows - there doesn't seem to be a way to reduce the
print quality to save ink. But atleast it works!

the time I get it figured out (or just give up, I've got other stuff to
do) probably the RPM will be released anyway. It's pretty much a
 flawless install for me, usually.

 Thanks.

[newbie] sound configuration

2000-02-20 Thread Brett Wolfson

I have a simple question. How do I configure a sound card in Mandrake 7.0.
I just installed linux about a week ago and finally got around to putting
some speakers on the box but I am not getting any sound out. I have tried
with cd's and .wav files but I am not getting anything. Any ideas on where
to start would be some help.

The windows command is winipcfg for ip/dns/gateway info

I saw it posted somewhere that you can run I believe "ipconfig" under
windows to get your DNS once you are connected to your free ip. Whether
this is legal and/or works for you I don't know.

Brett,

I have the Complete Linux 6.5 loaded and I have the same problem. The CD goes
round and round, but no sound emerges. That's better than my Windows 98 OS.
It locks up every time I try to play a CD and it does'nt matter what player I
use.
