[newbie] partition (drive) access
I was wondering if someone could answer a technical question for me. Recently I installed Mandrake 7.1 on my personal computer. Mandrake will automaticaly mount your media for you, whether it's HDs, zips, cds, etc. I am using a dual boot system, windows and then of course linux. On the windows partition I have two drives, C:\ and D:\ Well when I am running Linux, I can see both of the windows partitions and can even access the files across the partition (from Linux onto windows). But when I boot into Windows I can't see the D:\ drive. I can access the C but can't even see the D. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to resolve this? Sean

Results are gibberish on connect. Not necessarily. Your connect script might be expecting to see Ascii text at this point but your ISP might already be way into PPP handshaking and PAP/CHAP authentication. In this case you would see unintelligible gibberish, as this is handled in binary sequences. If this is the case, the fix is to REDUCE the wait time for a PPP connection and eliminate your last send/expect entries. |Something isn't right or |I'd get back legible data. You need to make sure that your initialization string "fixes" the DCE rate at 115K and that you use the STTY SPD_VHI option in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to adjust the UART to reflect this. The modem to modem rate is handled via "probes" between the local and remote modem, and will vary based upon line conditions. If your NVRAM modem settings were reset, the modem's rate when communicating via the UART to the computer will vary along with the modem to modem rate. This will give any comm program headaches. -JMS

[newbie] Hard drive compromised by Mandrake install
Hello All Having tried various flavours of Linux (RH 5.2 - 6.1, SuSE 6.0 - 6.3) I thought I'd try Mandrake. Followed my usual practice of clearing some space(3.5G) on my 2nd drive using Partition Magic 3.0 and running the installation CD. Everything seemed to go fine, quite impressed in fact, then, as has happened with all the other distros, graphics card gets probed and bye bye install. Never mind, been there before, start clean and try again with text installer. Problem. PM 3.0 now tells me it doesn't recognise the 2nd drive's signature (or words to that effect) so it's not going to play anymore. Win 95, astonishingly, seems quite happy with it! It can see it's 1.3G FAT32 partition and doesn't seem concerned about anything else. Just to see if the Mandrake installer could figure out what it had done, tried it again only to be told my drive was corrupt and it was giving up! (Once again words to that effect - this happened a few weeks ago). Fdisk(DOS) and FIPS indicate some problems with overlapping partition boundaries or something. H/W setup:- Gateway 2000 P5 200MMX 64M Virge/VX 4M Ensonic Soundscape VIVO 90 Fujitsu 6.4G, Maxtor 4.8G 2 brand X CDR. TV card, modem, scanner etc. There are obviously a number of possible solutions to the problem which, being a byte botherer of too many years experience, I could probably work out, but the question is:- WHY DID IT HAPPEN? Any clues anyone? (Is this a known problem?) Bye for now Graham ** This transmission is confidential and must not be used or disclosed by anyone other than the intended recipient. My StarOffice came on CD with the LINUX package. The readme files called for running a file as root which installed the program suite. I then had to go in as a regular user, not root, to install for that user. Actually I think they were links to the program for that user. You might want to check the readme files that came with your distribution, it wasn't obvious unless you read the whole thing since it was buried. If yours is anything like mine, that might be useful. You need to type the kernel version after mkbootdisk, which you can find out from the "uname -a" command. There is more information available from the "man mkbootdisk" command. Hi B.B. What is the maximum resolution your monitor can handle? What is the setting for resolution in X that you use when you change to somthing better (Victory Erazor II PCI card)? What is your actual video card? I have been trying to make things smaller in my 15" monitor at 1024x768, I dont mean a greater resolution, but just smaller bars and icons. [newbie] Missing basesystem error on install
I've installed Slackware and Redhat on other computers in the past, and a friend recommended Mandrake so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm trying to put Mandrake on an empty partition of a computer where the first three partitions are devoted to Windows NT. I downloaded the 7.1 iso CD-R image file and burned an installation CD. Then I created a boot disk and rebooted. The installation seemed to go fine. I created a simple partition setup -- one 200MB swap partition and a 4000MB+ root partition. The very next step after that is choosing packages to install. I get the error: Looking for available packages An error occurred: Missing basesystem package Then it goes back to the partition menu. If I click DONE I get another menu: Package Group Selection * Miscellaneous * Individual Package Selection Regardless of which of these choices I select, or both, or neither, when I click to go to the next step I get: An error occurred Illegal division by zero At first I guessed that I'd mis-burned the CD, I mean "missing basesystem package" sure sounds like it can't find a file on the CD... so I rebooted to NT and burned a new copy of the CD-R. The second disk exhibited the same problems as the first. So now I'm thinking that the iso image file itself is corrupt, but after searching lots of newsgroups, I can't find anyone else who's having the same problem, so somehow I doubt that's it. Is it looking for the "basesystem package" on the CD? Anyone have any ideas as to what's happening?

[newbie] SB Live! Value card won't work
Hi, I've just installed an SB Live! Value PCI sound card and I can't get the darn thing to work in MDK7.0. What I've done is run sndconfig and then the card gets detected and it says it is going to run a sample sound. When it goes to do this i get the following error message: modprobe error The following error occurred running the modprobe program: /lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/misc/emu10k1 o: init_module: Device or resource busy. After the autoconfiguration fails it says it will do a manual configuration. Then it gives the list of cards, I pick the Sound Blaster Live! card and then the above process is repeated. (at no stage am i given the option to enter the settings manually for the sound blaster card) So now I try another manual configuration with a different card, that being the Sound Blaster 16. This time I am allowed to enter the settings available. So I enter the following: I/O Port 0x220 IRQ5 DMA11 DMA25 MPU I/O0x330 Doing this and hitting enter results in me being cast out of sndconfig and back to the terminal with the following message on the terminal: [/root]# /usr/sbin/sndconfig Segmentation fault (core dumped) [/root]# I have tried manual configurations with all the sound blaster cards and other cards with the available settings as indicated above. I then read somewhere that there could be an IRQ conflict due to PNP being enabled in the bios, So I went into the bios and there I found no way of disabling PNP but I did find the list of IRQ's and noticed IRQ[5] was reserved so I changed this to being available. I then proceeded to repeat the long process described above with the same result (device resource busy) and being thrown out of sndconfig to a message saying - Segmentation fault (core dump). I am a newbie so going into files and editing them etc. is completely beyond me, I just wouldn't know where to start. If anyone could enlighten me as to how I can fixed this I would be very grateful! Sean You can not download a working copy of PM. I have used PM for almost all of my partitioning so I have no first hand knowledge as to wheather fdisk or any other utility will allow you to set your D partition as active. Since you created your D partition when you installed Mandrake does that mean that you don,t actually have any data on it? If it is just an empty Fat partition you can boot to your 7.1 installation CD, go through to the partition utility, delete D, and resize C to take back the space. After it has been written to disk cancel the installation.and reboot your system. You will now have only one Windows partition but it's size will now be that of C D combined. Re: [newbie] MOUNT POINTS
hi eric, hope i deciphered your name correctly out of your email addy! in linux all your files and directorys (folders) are all part of one 'tree' or hierachy, there are no seperate drive letters for each physical hard disk or partition. instead each partition is 'mounted' on a directory of your choice. an example is, in windows you may have a c,d, and an e drive, in linux you may choose to see thses drives as /mnt/drivec, /mnt/drived and /mnt/drivee, if you were to mount the drives like this then a file that windows sees as d:\some folder\somefile.ext would appear in your linux sysyem as /mnt/drived/some folder/somefile.ext, note that /mnt/drived is a directory that you get to choose when you mount the drive or partition, you can choose any directory name to mount a partition on (use an empty directory or any files that are already in it before mounting a partition there will become invisible). also the files that make up linux are also on partitions and these are mounted as part of the linux filesystem, when installing linux you will neeed to choose a partition to be known as / and it is usually a good idea to have a seperate partition that is known as /home, that way if you save work in /home and have to reinstall linux you can aviod formatting /home and keep your work. there are other traditional mount points for linux files, it is common to have a seperate partition for /usr since a lot of basic system files get put there by the installtion process. how you partition your hard disk and what mount points you create for linux files depends a lot on how many physical disks you have and what their capacity is. a lot of people disagree as to exactly what is the best 'scheme' for partitioning and mounting and i am not such an expert that i like to get drawn into such discussions! i hope this goes some way to answering your question, if not then let us know, there are far more knowledgable people on this list than me! bascule Lee LCpl Erik J wrote: I just started using linux, and can come one explain what a mount point is and what each one does. Re: [newbie] Hard drive compromised by Mandrake install
This begs a BIG question. If, from your previous experience, you're aware of problems Linux has with your particular video card why are you surprised that Mandrake has the same, or similar problems during installation? Why not just change video cards to accomodate Linux since you obviously like the OS, and clearly Winblows couldn't care less? I'd say that would take care of the problem and you would be free to keep on trying all the different flavors and versions of Linux that are populating the computer world and keeping you occupied with hours of fun. -- Mark I love my Linux Box... It was misconfigured and somehow the system thought it was on hda6, which it is not. I have repartitioned one of my hard drives , hdc1, to be the swap file. The fstab entry is proper. The device has been partitioned and formatted under DOS. I have tried this with no formatting and formatting. I get an error message that the kernal doesn't support the filesystem swap. hdc1 is not mounted, and the OS goes to turn on swapping and fails. If I look at linuxconf under KDE.it shows the device being set up for swap. I get no swapping at all, and my system just keeps grabbing real ram until it fills up. Oh yes, I have tried mkswap and get an error that 130048 is larger than device which has 0 size. Wondering if there were any tips on this one, that someone could give me. Thanks. Then use each Operating Systems respective utility to format the partition that each OS will occupy. For example if Win98 (Fat32) will be on the 2nd partition, WinNT (VFat or NTFS) on the 3rd partition and Linux (Ext2FS) on the 4th partition, then use Win98 to format the 2nd, WinNT to format the 3rd partition and Linux to format the4th partition AFTER you have used Partition Magic (DOS - PQMagic.exe) to setup or change the partitions. It appears that all the operating systems find the DOS partitioning table acceptable. If you have PM 4 you can create a DOS boot disk that also includes a graphical version of PQMagic.exe on it. You can use PQMagic.exe to format but while the other OS will accept the partition table, they will sometimes not like the formatting. BTW if you always use the same tool for partitioning and repartitioning you are less like to have any incompatibilities and corruption. Re: [newbie] Printer Epson
Hi Gustavo: Mine is an Epson Stylus 740 Color. And yes, I did experience the same problem like yours. I'm not so sure if I could help out but this is what I noticed in my case. If my printer is already on before I start installing Mandrake 7.0 it does not work (most of the time, coz I have reinstalled my Mandrake many times already). However, if I turn on my printer just before I configure for printer, it works. (very peculiar, huh?) Sometimes also, I don't configure the printer in install and configure it after installing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Doing this on the same machine and using the same installation disk and installation procedure and acting inconsistently, I can really conclude that there is a bug (or there are bugs) in Mandrake 7.0 (this is just my personal opinion, no other intention intended :) ) "If" you are going to reinstall, try what I did. Turn on the printer just before configuring it. good luck. edison From: toyswins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Printer Epson Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 19:27:58 -0500 I have a Epson Stylus 400 Color and there is no specific driver for it in my version 6.5 however, there is a generic Epson Stylus driver. On Thu, 06 Jul 2000, you wrote: I was trying to setup the internet, so I clicked the INTERNET icon, but don't know how to setup modem, and is it possible have a free internet, could you please help me. Thanks You're just havin a heck of a time with this aren't ya? :) http://www.mandrakeuser.org/connect/cppp.html This covers a lot of different ways and applications, so scroll down the page till you see 'Kppp' But first I gotta feelin, you might've missed, or Mandrake missed figuring out what com port, or ttyS? (eg, Com2, or ttyS1) your modem is on. Start 'linuxconf' (as root), and mash the 'miscellaneous services' button on the 'config' tab. You should now see a 'modem' button to mash on. Then you'll see 5 choices, ttyS1 thru S4, and 'unknown'. I dunno what happens if you hit unknown ;) Click on the one your modem is on (most likely Com2/ttyS1 if you've gotta decent hardware modem). Quit making the change(s). If none of the above doesn't get you going, you might not have a modem? Check here: http://www.kcdata.com/~gromitkc/winmodem.html Read that page, but especially click on the link 'View the entire table'. That's prob'ly the most up to date list of modems that work with any OS other than Windoze only, ie, real modems. If none of the above works, holler back with more specifics on your hardware, and what you found out. Yes it's possible to have free Internet (FWIW). RE: [newbie] Exit BIOS/don't save changes
Try resetting your PCI/PNP options in the BIOS. Make sure it reads PNP/OS, etc. Then try rebooting. Entering the BIOS works for you, because it permits the machine to start up without fully initializing the PNP/PCI cards. This indicates a conflict in the PNP/PCI setup. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: wtomlinson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] |Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2000 10:43 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: [newbie] Exit BIOS/don't save changes | | |Linux won't start after installation unless: | Hold "delete" and enter BIOS. | Exit BIOS and don't save changes. | This has to be done each time I boot Linux. | |I've installed Linux 7.0 several times on two different hard |drives(different makes and models). Thanks! While we're on the subject, and this is only my experience and opinion I don't have near fast enough connection to d/l, specially 1.2 gigs of 7.1. I do have a burner tho. I've always bought linux CD's from cheapbytes.com. But with 6.1 and again with 7.0, the cd's were poor quality. No problems I couln't work around, but not up to par. So I bought 7.1 from LinuxLand because I heard ahead of time that they were good quality, and from masters obtained directly from Mdk, not a burn of the d/l iso's. I wasn't disappointed. Very high quality cdr's, rather than production cd's. Full 2.5 gig install went without one hitch. I don't mean this as a plug for LL, or a slap at Cheapbytes, but I do believe it's important that when we experience install problems, we should also state where or what we're tryin to install from, no? I gotta Plextor 8432, hasn't made a coaster yet :^p doesn't matter tho, I've got a sh!+load of AoL MSN cd's they mail me ;-> -- ~~ Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- BM

[newbie] Install
I have downloaded and created the 2 CD containing Mandrake 7.1 but when I try and install I have the following problem. I select standard install and it runs till it gets to my two IDE disks. It then assumes that it can go ahead and rewrite the partitions on /dev/hdc and I really don't want Mandrake fiddling with this drive. I have no problem with it doing what it will with /dev/hda but I need to change the install so that it leaves /dev/hdc alone. I have tried disabling the second drive in the BIOS but still Mandrake persists in trying to rewrite it. Please tell me how to do this. --- Regards, Alf Stocktonwww.stockton.co.za In God we trust, all others are suspects.
[newbie] Configuring my ISA Modem
Now that I've tackled almost every device on my computer, there lies one last part to be recognized by Mandrake: my ISA "Compaq 56K-DF" modem. I doubt that it is a winmodem due to the fact that Windows reads it on Com2, and not as an expansion device. Any advice, drivers? I've already set Linux to look for it on Com2 (ttyS2), only to the success of a droning "Modem busy" message each time I try Kppp. And another comment ... switching to a Windows session after a long Linux session avails my modem undetectable to Windows unless I do a clean reboot. Could this be related? Believe me, this modem has giving me trouble many times before. Kenny
Re: [newbie] video chipset video card
Hi all: I'm having problems with my X interface. I can login in text mode but the startx would give me a blinking screen. I checked out www.xfree86.org and found that my chipset "Trident Blade 3D" is supported. However, i followed the instructions to set it up using xf86config to no avail. My Trident Blade 3D chipset is intergrated into the motherboard. Does this make a difference then? I mean from a separate video card? My monitor is a Compaq 15" MV520. If I get video card (compatible with Linux) and solves that problem would be great but if not I don't want to spend anymore $$$ and will get the same errors.
