Re: [newbie] Security Question - Windows Partition

2001-02-13 Thread Tim Holmes

As far as I know, there are no security issues with having a dual boot
system. No more then usual at least. The only thing to worry about
would be system stablity.

Unless there's an application out there that I just don't know about,
WinBLOZE can't read a EXT2 file system. So you won't be able to see
your Linux partition and a hacker wouldn't either.

In Linux, the OS will read FAT32 partitions. So if somebody hacks your
system, they will most likely be able to see everything.

There are pluses to having two drives in your machine for Linux. It's
better to have one drive for the basics, like var/ and usr/ and the like
and then a drive for the home directories and no essentials. (For example.
I have a /software directory to stash junk that's on a second drive.)

So yes, there are security risks if you're on the Internet with your machine,
but no more so with a dual boot machine then with anything else.

Hope that helps.

[newbie] WordPerfect 8 license key and PhotoPaint install

launched, but I get a dialog box saying "The grace period for
this software will expire after 90 days. "etc. and asks me
for a license key. I can click on the button "Enter key
later" and keep using the program. However, I thought the
download version of WP8 is supposed to be better than the
90-day trialware that this apparently is. Am I missing
something? Anyone has any idea?

Also, I downloaded PhotoPaint9 for Linux and installed it.
The problem is I don't know how to start the program! The
installer put a bunch of files in /usr/lib/corel, but I
couldn't find an appropriate excecutable under that directory
tree. I couldn't find anything in the README either. Has
anyone have better luck? Please let me know. TIA!

Is it an ISA or PCI modem?
If it is PCI then it should be set up as ttyS3.
It also sounds as though you have an IRQ conflict which causing the modem

Once we resolve these questions you should be able to set it up using

Earlier when I rebooted into windows and it installed the cirrus it was

problem using the mga driver provided by Matrox and
modifying the XF86Config-4 file.

It was all running ok since I received and install the
CD Mandrake 7.2 update. Then I started to have the
same problem as before("Out of Scan Range" error and
freezing), and I noticed that the file X86Config-4 was
modified. But worse of all, even modifying this file
as it was before the update installation still the
problem persists.

Please, any one has idea what was in that update? Some
other version of XFree86 ?
Some ideas ofhow to fix the problem?

Thank you very much, Aldo

machines i can open up network neighborhood and see the linux box. Open up
the linux box and i can see the shared files and read and write to them
 perfectly. Now the problem...

I see two printers, one named "lp" and the other named "printers" but there
is only one printer attached to the linux box. A HP DeskJet 722c. Under
LM7.1 without CUPS i only saw one printer and just set up the windows

Now i have tried to print to both of the printers that samba is showing and
havent been able to get anything to come out of the printer but i am fairly
certain that the print jobs are being sent to the linux box. Reasons i think
this are that all the network lights blink like they did when a print job
was being sent under 7.1 and tcpdump is showing that the linux box is
receiving packets from the win98 box that is sending the job.

So i am fairly certain that windows is sending out the print job and that
the linux box is receiving it but nothing is getting printed. Any one have
any ideas about what i need to do to solve this one?

Re: [newbie] Problem with KPPP

2001-02-13 Thread Tim Holmes

When you get that error, it means that something caused the
connection to drop. There a billion things that could cause
that.

1) Somebody steps on the line or trips on it causing line
noise
2) Bad line noise coming from your LEC (Local Exchange Carrier.)
3) Downloading large files, sometimes the modem can misinterprit
information as a disconnect command.
4) Your system isn't taking the information fast enough or
effecient enough and it causes a bottle neck that will
disconnect you.

That doesn't mean it's crashed or anything. You should still have
no problem opening up kppp again and reconnecting. ifup command
is more stable due to the fact there isn't a GUI to cause problems
or to conflict with anything else.

I know this question doesn't belong here, but since there is a lot of

I'm lookinf for a song, but don't know the name and/or artist.
I just remember the video where some guy (a movie actor) is a fugitive
running through a forest, then he hides in a farm's barn and the farmer
children start feeding him; then all of a sudden the farmer realices and
starts chasing the guy with a shootgun throgh the country.

i know this is worst than mission impossible, but who know, one of you

Can you try again using Netscape, I have explained how to do the stuff

that you give a name to the file which ends in ".ppd". Otherwise CUPS
will not find the file. If it still does not work, send me the file
which you have downloaded.

BTW, the Stylus Photo 2000P driver doesn't work. This
printer/scanner (i don't care about the scanner) is hooked up parallel not
 usb.

Have you tried the PPD file? Most driver are independent on the type of

[newbie] Broken Internet connection

2001-02-13 Thread Don Mayhew

Unable to re-establish my internet connection.

My initial install of LM 7.2 setup internet OK.
So I know the hardware/modem is not the problem.

While messing with cups to try to get user access
to my printer, I broke LM badly - flashing monitor,
no NTLDR or boot on startup, boot floppy just gets
back to flashing monitor - so I used the CDs to
do an update ( 2 hours + on this 166Hz/64MB machine).

The update got me back to where I could use DrakConf
to setup my ISP connect info. But many tries with
various combinations of info never got a beep out
of the modem - and no messages that I could find.

So I tried the manual for kppp. But I could not find
any help in where to start, or how to troubleshoot.

 Next I tried the ISP-Hookup-HOWTO.
It led me thru a verification of files:

  /etc/hosts.deny
ALL: ALL

  /etc/hosts.accept
ALL: LOCAL

  /etc/HOSTNAME
Don

  /etc/hosts
127.0.0.0 localhost
0.0.0.0 donm

  /etc/networks
loopback 127.0.0.0
localnet 0.0.0.0

  /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
donm * passwd ( where passwd = my ISP passwd)

  /etc/ppp/chatscript
#this file did not exist so I built it as
#instructed in the HOWTO
TIMEOUT 5
"" ATZ
OK ATDT12345678
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT WAITING
TIMEOUT 45
CONNECT ""
TIMEOUT 5

The above was implemented as root with cmd:

exec pppd connect \
'chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chatscript' \
-detach crtscts modem defaultroute \
user donm
/dev/modem 38400

This gets as far as showing ATZ on the screen
and then error: /dev/modem permission denied

I tried all permission settings on /dev/modem
and its link to /dev/ttyS1 but could never get
past this error. The first char in the permission
strings for /dev files are not normal files and
may prohibit direct access. But the HOWTO script
says do it. I tried chmod, chgrp, chown to all
possibilities but never got past the error.

After a day of this I need help !

Win Me first, then Win2K. Then Linux. My pref is to use the Win2K
bootloader instead of lilo. For a good overview of how to do this go
here: http://morse.colorado.edu/itplab/ipv6/dualboot.html

It's written for NT, but W2K is exactly the same.

Some gotchas you need to be aware of:

1. WinMe must be installed in a primary partition of the first hd
2. W2K (NT) can be installed in either a primary or logical partition
of any hd, but the boot partition (the one with the NTLDR,NTDETECT.COM,
and BOOT.INI) must be completely within the first 2 gig of the first hd
in a primary partition.
3. Linux can be installed on any partition of any drive, but if you use
the NT bootloader LILO must be installed to the first linux partition,
not to the MBR. And make a LINUX BOOT DISK!

God, man, get a book! Im sorry if that sounds rude, but why in the world
are you trying to use Linux if you wont put even the smallest effort
into it?
Yahoo search on 'DOS to Linux Primer' yields about 2580 matches.
Prominent in the first 20 are:

I'm not expert, I've not seen anyting ~quite~ like this in
Linux, but I have in Windows. Three things come to mind: 1. The
resolution you're using. Too high a res for the driver in
question can really cause problems. 2. The mouse driver. The
wrong mouse driver will easily do this. 3. The font you're
using. Each or all three are notorious for this kind of thing.

God, man, get a book! Im sorry if that sounds rude, but why in the world
are you trying to use Linux if you wont put even the smallest effort
 into it?
Yahoo search on 'DOS to Linux Primer' yields about 2580 matches.
Prominent in the first 20 are:

Re: [newbie] commands

2001-02-13 Thread Vic

Oh gee THAT was HELPFUL -- NOTTT!!!

How about giving the guy some USEFUL info

Such as---

To change directories, type cd /bin
and that will place you in the directory /bin
one down from root level.

To go to the directory /usr type cd /usr
and you will be in it.

Then if you want to be in /usr/local you can
do it two ways:

type cd local
or type cd /usr/local

Note that the first one is assuming you
are already inside the /usr directory.

And from anyplace on the filesystem to
simply go back home, type

cd

and whatever user you are logged in as,
you will go to that home directory such as
/home/user1

(assuming it is a valid directory and user on the system)

[newbie] Netscape 6 -- Segmentation Fault

2001-02-13 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

1) My system is an AMD K6-2 400 with 128 megs of real RAM (and a 256
swap file on LM72).

2) I am using the new Netscape 6.01, which just came out a few days ago.
This 6.01 version is based on the stable Mozilla .7, which came out in
January, while Netscape 6.0, which came out in November, was based on
the unstable Mozilla Milestone 17 of mid-September. In other words,
three milestones separate Netscape 6.0 and 6.1, namely, Mozilla
Milestone 17, 18 and Mozilla .6 and now Mozilla .7.

You might wish to check out the new Netscape 6.01. I used Mozilla .7 for
quite a while, and it was very stable (for many hours at a time) and
reliable. Please try it and let me know if you have this same
segmentation fault.

I have this segmentation fault even when I use Netscape 6.01 ONLY (i.e.
without Netscape 4.76).

My thanks to all of you for your kind help.

Are there any 4 port USB hubs that can be recommended for use with LM 7.2?

 Thanks,

I have a Linksys 4 port USB hub working under LM 7.2. My Zip drive works
fine through it. The only problem with it is that, on my system, LM 7.2
won't automatically recognize my Zip when it's hooked up through the hub, but
will recognize it if the Zip is hooked up directly to the PC. That's was
easily solved just by editing rclocal to directly load the usb-storage
module. Other than that, my Linksys works fine.

Hello all!

I can't get the screensavers in Gnome to work. They are installed, but when
I'm trying to lock the screen or test the screensavers, the screen just

Thanks for all help!

Reading my message again, it probably was more rude than intended. But
seriously, Linux won't hold your hand like that other OS.

Other than the two links I posted, there is a wealth of information on
the Internet.
If you are an absolute newbie, I could recommend 'Linux for Dummies' or
'The Complete Idiots Guide to Linux'. And no, thats not a slam... thats
what I started with. The Idiots Guide comes with Caldera, I think, which
was my first system. You might want to get them from a library, as you
will probably quickly outgrow them. And if you have Mandrake installed,
I'd definitely pass on the Caldera. IMO Mandrake is far superior.
Also in that vein, 'I Didnt Know You Could Do That in Linux'. Im not
sure thats the exact title, but its close. Another great library book.

A book to buy would be 'Running Linux'. It will get dogeared from use
over the years!
