[newbie-it] VIA 82C686B AIUTO!!!
Forza Linux!
Re: [newbie] limit of cat5 cables? (length)
Quoting liberally from Ethernet Networks by Gilbert Held: The IEEE 8023 standard for 10BASE-T using unshielded twisted pair at 10 Mbps, maximum segment length is 100 meters or 328 feet... Now if you want to get really technical, the 100 meters was originally meant to consist of 3 segments. The first segment can be up to 90 meters from a patch panel to a wall plate. Segments 2 and 3 which can be up to 10 meters in length allow for patch cables at each end of the link. You are well within the maximum length and it's a lot cheaper than a wireless solution. Re: [newbie] limit of cat5 cables? (length)
No trouble at all with CAT5 at that distance. If you do not want to drill holes wireless is good. (but cables are cheaper) I use wireless at 11Mbps from Melco/Buffalo I have a PCMCIA adapter with a Melco wireless card in the desktop PC upstairs and a wireless hub colocated with my cable modem. Mandrake 8.1 recognises the Melco PCMCIA wireless card automagically. The only issue I had was configuring the PCI-PCMCIA adapter. This is a common issue with several makes of wireless PCI-PCMCIA adapters, but there is an excellent HOWTO available, and of course advice available from other users. The Lucent Orinoco wireless system is very popular with Linux users, and there are tools developed specially for it. useful links are http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/korinoco/ There are 11 wireless channels to choose from to avoid interference (Microwave ovens can be an issue on some channels) The data is encrypted and so is safe, only computers in your workgroup can decode it. Of course passing blackhats with a supercomputer in their car could crack the encryption, but is your data really worth stealing? Range can be an issue. The Meco system I use has an integral antenna which is not really up to going through more than 1 or 2 walls. The manufacturers quote range as 300ft, but that is in clear air. Where the target device is more than 2 walls away I have to use an external antenna which adds to the cost. Other manufacturers such as cisco have a better (larger) antenna on the PCMCIA card HTH Derek On Saturday 10 November 2001 22:37, you wrote: Hi, everybody. Hello, This is a problem I haven't been able to solve. Hi. I'm very new to Linux so I bought the 3 CD pack for Mandrake 8.1 expecting the installation to be pretty much trouble free. Unfortuantely, after the initial setup/ welcome screen using the boot disk and bootable CD-ROM, the setup said that it couldn't find an installation CD in the CD-ROM. The error message is as follows: I can't access a Mandrake-Linux Installation disk in your CDROM Drive. By looking in the setup log I also saw some of these messages: 4ide0: Drive 1 didn't accept speed setting, Oh well 4hdb: Status timed-out 4hdb: DMA Disabled 4hdb: drive not ready for command 4isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=3.40, iso_blknum=151339 and other stuff like this If you guys don't know of any solutions off the top of your heads then I guess I'll see if we can get it up and runing at the Installfest. Thanks. / He has a DFI motherboard with Award BIOS. bios version is current. CD rom is primary slave, HD is primary master This problem also occurs when using RedHat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.1 We tried two copies of the installmedia, so the disk wasn't bad. Demo Linux boots just fine off of the CD-Rom. / First of all, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I built the computer myself and currently I have Win 98 and Win 2K on two seperate primary partitions. Then I used PartitionMagic 5.0 to create a Linux partition. Anyway, the CD-ROM is bootable, but since I was having trouble with just booting off the CD-ROM I tried it again with a bootdisk. I think that I'm using the cdrom.img file if that is what you mean by the image file - the actual CD is from MandrakeSoft. Also, windows has no trouble booting from the CD-ROM. I got an email from Eric Sandall and I asked him what the situation is with getting rides to the Installfest and what all peripherials we need to bring. I can bring my Mandrake 8.1 CD's, but do I need to bring anything else besides my tower (i.e. monitor, keyboard, mouse)? Anyway, thanks for the help. RE: [newbie] Kmail cannot receive email but can send email
Stephen, I am a newbie, but from what I know it is perfectly possible that you cannot receive your mail but at the same time you can send. The problem is that each task is performed by different protocols. You need a SMTP server for sending mails and ussually a POP server for recieving. And, as long as a passwor is not needed for an SMTP server (whenever it is an open realy) you will be able to send your mails without problems. In the other hand, you will need a password to download your messages from your POP server, and if it doesn't match you'll get an error message. I recommend you to check your Kmail configuration, and if you are not including capitals letters. I hope this helps :-) Rafael Lepra -Mensaje original- De: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]En nombre de Stephen Liu Enviado el: viernes, 09 de noviembre de 2001 14:01 Para: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Asunto: [newbie] Kmail cannot receive email but can send email Hi All People, I encounter another problem in running Mandrake 8.1 Each time when I check mail in Kmail, a warning pop-up saying Error, incorrect password. I don't use autorun under Windows and don't want to use it under Linux either. Then one day, Nautilus simply quit showing up. I have no idea why, although I was delighted because it made the autorun problem go away. However, now I have no icons on the desktop. Can Nautilus be instructed how to behave? Can Nautilus be brought back from the dead? thanks in advance, gm A great thing about GNOME is its flexibility. For example, you can have either GMC or Nautilus to manage your desktop, or you can choose to have neither. Nautilus is still very much a work in progress, and at present it is quite slow and heavy. Nautilus 1.0.5 is a little faster than the 1.0.4 included in Mandrake. Disabling it, as you have inadvertantly done, is the best way to speed up GNOME. There is an option in the Preferences to tell it to manage your desktop (you need to be in Advanced mode) or not. You can then use Nautilus as a standalone file manager. Now, you can either have GMC (which is much faster) managing your desktop or nothing at all. To remove Nautilus entirely, you need to uninstall the nautilus, nautilus-mozilla and the nautilus-devel (if present) packages. However, I would advise against it since it is a major part of GNOME. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan I did this 'cause Linux gives me a woody. -- Dave '-ddt-' Taylor, announcing DOOM for Linux Where is this Advanced Preferences menu to let me configure what program handles the desktop? There should be a picture of a black diamond along the top of your Nautilus window. Click it and you'll be in Advanced mode. Now I've managed to get gmc configured as the desktop, but that's not working right either. I can't kill it (it keeps restarting.) And clicking on a desktop link just brings up an open with dialog. The GNOME Session Manager is set to restart gmc in case it crashes or is killed. Go to a terminal and type session-properties (this is also available from the GNOME Control Centre). Look for gmc and change the Style (the drop-down box along the top of the window) to Trash. Now you can kill gmc. Once gmc has been killed, you won't have anything managing your desktop, which can bring a speed boost on some systems. To save your GNOME session like that, either exit GNOME and check the Save current setup option, or type save-session in a terminal window. thanks, gm -- Sridhar Dhanapalan Ok, the guy who made the netfilter Makefile was probably on some really interesting and probably highly illegal drugs when he wrote it. -- Linus Torvalds Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Mail Folder Lost in Transition from Netscape to Mozilla
Hi! When I upgraded from Mandrake 7.2 to 8.1 I kept my /home tree intact and reformatted all the other partitions for a complete re-install. One of my most important goals was to keep the mail folders that I had established to hold on to important old mail. In several of my accounts everything worked perfectly, even though Mozilla came up when I hit the icon to launch Netscape Communicator there was no problem once i chose tasks mail and news - my mail folders and all the old mail was there. Unfortunately in one account this didn't happen. The .nsmail directory is still there and seems to have all the folder files just like it should, unfortunately Mozilla's mail and news section doesn't seem to be able to access them. I checked out the import options but the wizard has no provision for migrating Communicator Mail to Mozilla. Is there some way to tell Mozilla in that account to look at .nsmail for the mail folders and boxes? Is there some repair facility that will reindex the mailboxes and make their contents visible to Mozilla? I'm not sure what is needed but I think I have all my old mail, that it is just invisible to Mozilla. I would appreciate getting pointed in the right direction. Thanks. [newbie] WordPerfect 8.0 Font Installer Crashes
I have WP 8.0 (commercial CD) on Mandrake 8.1. I have gotten past the problem requiring libc5 and ld.so2.0, and I have been able to get xwp running with the small number of fonts installed by default. However, I am having a serious problem trying to install additional adobe type 1 fonts. In short, xwpfi crashes when it tries to update wp.drs, shuts down with no error messages, and leaves xwp unstartable. I have reinstalled from CD several times, and the same thing occurs each time I try to install more fonts. When I try to delete fonts, I get and error message stating that the .all file or wp.drs is missing or corrupted. It appears to be a problem with wp.drs. Is this a known problem? Is there a fix? I have figured out that for any given font, I need both the .afm and .pfb files for that font. So long as I have both, I should be able to install any adobe type 1 font, right? I don't know if this is related, but I also am having printer problems. During installation, I cannot chose the installed system printer which works with, e.g., Netscape and the print test. The only printer choices are $PRINTER and saving to a text file. When I try to assign a destination to $PRINTER, I get an error messages that there are no destinations available. Is this a known problem? Is there a fix for it? -- Jim Marshall Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] problems with staroffice6beta
david, thx again for your suggestion. :) i installed staroffice (under root) with the /net switch. when i logged out of root and logged back in under a normal user and tried running s.o. from the home directory, the same message (as before) was displayed. however, this time when i proceeded, it asked me if i wanted to do a workstation install (1mb) or local install (256mb). am i correct in assuming that the workstation install is what i should select when each user wants to run his/her own s.o.? thx. Yes/No also, when i install staroffice, is it suppose to automatically create a program group called staroffice on the kmenu (for kde desktops)? if not, how should i do this? Did you install Star Office with the /net switch? That is, did you run the installer from the command line, like this: # so-6_0-beta-bin-linux-en.bin /net Using the /net switch will setup Star Office in network mode, so that each user may then have their own personal configuration of Star Office. You may then run Star Office from the link in the staroffice6.0/ directory, which resides in your home directory. Star Office tries to create menu items in your KDE menu, however because Mandrake uses a special menu system, Star Office menu items will not appear -- you need to create them yourself, with Mandrake's menu editor. I should mention that in Gnome, a Star Office sub-menu with several items did appear, under the Favorites menu (which is part of Gnome, and not related to the special Mandrake menu system). Re: [newbie] mandrake linux on athlon-based systems?
Athlon works just great with Mandrake as does K6. You do not have to do anything. Any applications you compile on your Athlon will by default get compiled as i686 architecture and will include extensions to the instruction set like 3dNow This is why for example the developers of mplayer encourage users to compile for their individual machines rather than use a generic i386 or i586 RPM (Note: The mplayer developers depracate the gcc2.96 compiler that ships with Mandrake because it leaves out the 3DNow optimisations. The alternative gcc3.01 will compile for 3DNow) If you look at /usr/src/linux/.config you can see which processor features were used to compile your current kernel. You will notice there are specific switches to compile in K6 or K7(Athlon) optimised code. The default i586 optimised kernel works just fine with Athlon and you are unlikely to notice any benefit if you recompile for Athlon. However graphics intensive applications such as kde or mplayer should show a benefit because of the i686 extended instruction set and 3DNow optimisations. Just to make sure there is no way Samba could be advertising your shares over the internet you should use the 'hosts deny' facility of Samba (Globals page in SWAT) to exclude the IP address of your internet gateway. If you have more than one network interface (like for example a dial up internet connection) you should set the 'interfaces' field in SWATGlobalsbase_options to run samba ONLY over your local ethernet, and not the internet interface. Re: [newbie] re: staroffice
Still on the general topic of StarOffice. I am using the 6.0 beta and I seem to have messed up the database integration some how, or perhaps I'm just not sure what I should look for if it is working properly. I went through the StarOffice installation prior to doing the Adabas installation. The StarOffice installer told me it couldn't find the database and that if I wanted those features I should run that installation. I ran the database installation the same way I ran the StarOffice installation but I can't detect any evidence from inside StarOffice that I have added the database. There isn't a menu option for a new data file under the file menu. I have no idea what I should be looking for but it seems like it ought to be a little more obvious than this. I originally did a /net install of both programs and then ran a user install from the directory I created during the /net install. Any advice on how to get back on track would be appreciated. Thanks. [newbie] lack of real estate (screen res. problems)
Okay, this seems like the place for someone with relatively little Linux experience to go with base maddening problems. I've worked with computers for years but finally made the plunge to Linux a month or so ago. The monitor I'm using is ancient, but worked fine at 800x600, 16M colors on both Win95 and Win98SE with both my previous computers; it's an ASTVision 4i. The tech who loaded my system didn't have the monitor there, so he set it up as a default SVGA monitor and it loaded fine at 800x600. However, not liking generic settings, I tried to locate the AST monitor in (I believe it was MCC, or Harddrake). Even though I went back to a default generic setting, my real estate has been screwed ever since! I cannot get more than 640x480 screen dimensions, and the computer thinks this is the _only_ setting available for a Nvidia Geforce2 MX-200 3d accelerator card (except it's listed as Geforce2 DDR (Generic) - this strikes me as a potential problem). I'm extremely reluctant to accept that I paid for a 3d card that doesn't work with this computer, so it must be operator error. I cannot even access all of the menus in MCC, etc, because the screen size is so small the control buttons (apply/try, ok, cancel, save, etc) run off the edge of the screen, and control panels cannot be resized. A console solution may be necessary for that reason, but please, go easy on the newbie. *sigh* Thanks in advance, David Reynolds -- A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write a sonnet, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Re: [newbie] Help Required
1.How will you eliminate duplicate rows from file 'a' and store the same in file 'b'? First - it's best to use a subject line that's descriptive. Saying help required doesn't really help much. Better to say something like 'help with filtering' or something. There is a Unix tool called 'uniq' (for unique) that does what you want. But the file needs to first be sorted. So: $ sort a | uniq b does what I think is required. That'll return the file with the duplicate rows taken out. 2.What is special about /dev/null file ? It's a special device (nearly everything in /dev are 'files' that inter- face with the kernel and, ultimately, hardware) that simply discards anything sent to it. KIRAN K L David E. Re: [newbie] file access speed
I have a directory on a windows partition that currently contains thousands of very small files that I need to routinely access. Will My guess is that migrating them to a reiserfs partition would improve both access time and space utilization. VFAT is still a big space waster with small files on large partitions and slogging through files is quite slow with vfat. It seems like i recall trying that, and it gave me refresh rate/screen size combination is not possible for this hardware or something similar. I may have done it from a console, not a true command level though. Am I off-base then in thinking there is a problem with detecting the 3d accelerator card? I am not a videocard specialist. I think you should try and get 800x600 running with 256 colors. See if that works. Then try moving up gradually. And check the specs for the card against what Xconfigurator shows. Re: [newbie] [ OT ] Recommended AMD Athlon 1.x Motherboard
On Sunday 11 November 2001 12:39 am, you sent me this message: Sorry for this OT. Anyway, I would like to ask your opinion to what Socket A Motherboard for AMD Athlon 1.x Ghz would you like to recommend to me? I built my system using the AMD 1Ghz processor in a AOpen AK73 series MB (1394 AK73). I've had no problems as of yet and the speed is incredible. I found that the bus speed is 133mhz but when peripherals are made for 266mhz, then this board can handle it as well, IMHO! While putting it together, I did find the CPU fan was a bit difficult to install. The socket is surrounded by components that can be scratched very easy. But then again, I bought a dual-fan system to cool my cpuvery large! Have fun! Roger I am planning to build my all-in-one server for my small Internet cafe. [newbie] limit of cat5 cables? (length)
Hi, everybody. I have a DSL connection coming in to the upstairs computer. I'd like to connect (withought having to get a new modem) a computer downstairs to the same connection. Cat 5 cable does have a range limit, but it something like 100 meters, so you are well within its capabilities. I am currently looking into wireless for my home, because my wife can't stand the cables I have running between the network hub and three computers, across our living room. The only downside I can see is the initial cost... and even that's not too bad, but my expendable cash at the moment is nil :-( Dave -- Fourth Law of Revision: It is usually impractical to worry beforehand about interferences -- if you have none, someone will make one for you. msg81299/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature
