[newbie-it] problemino della settimana - file .swf

2003-06-30 Thread Arwan -
a termine. Devo scaricare dei testi da un sito fatto completamente con Flash 6;
trovare istruzioni in merito?

Qualche suggerimento?
Vi ringrazio in anticipo

permette ci cercare stringhe all'interno di files plain/text.
La sintassi è:
find {stringa_da_cercare}  {files}
find -v {stringa_da_escludere}  {files}
In ogni caso: man grep

Uso: wget -r [URL]

Stephen,
I have the same problem with the Nvidia drivers. The only thing that works ok
is xawtv capturing direct off the video capture card with the device called out as

xawtv -c /dev/v4l/video0

Everthing else, EVERY other player gives me blue garbage or a smear on the screen.
Well, that's not quite true. They are ok in full screen mode. The only fix I could
find was to use the nv drivers.

I would really like to figure this one out as well, cause I can't play Tux now.

If you are using KDE you can use kjobviewer

You can access it from your KDE ControlCentrePeripheralsPrintersJobs

Alternatively use menudrake to add a menu entry for it so you can access it

If you use Gnome or some other Window Manager then install the printman RPM
and use the gnome-print-manager to monitor your jobs.

Re: [newbie] Powerfan connection?

2003-06-30 Thread Dale Huckeby
Many apologies to Ian and FemmeFatale for not responding sooner. I already
knew it wasn't the case fan. I know where its leads are. I found out by
Googling that power supplies _usually_ have an internal connection, and thus
don't have a connector coming _out_ of the power supply box to plug into the
motherboard. Apparently Abit's manual is indicating where to plug in an
_external_ connector from the power box _if_ one exists, but doesn't indicate
that there usually isn't one. But their manual is generally excellent and
comprehensive, so I might just send them a heads-up on this particular detail.
The motherboard, by the way, turned out to be defective. All I could get on
bootup was checksum error - defaults loaded, and no keyboard response to
enable me to go into the bios to try to fix it. Abit has okayed an exchange
for another one. When I get it I'll know not to worry about the powerfan
connector. Thanks to both of you for your responses.

Dale Huckeby

On Sun, 22 Jun 2003, Ian Trickett wrote:

This is not for the case fan - that should be a separate connector. Better
quality power supplies now, in addition to all the power connectors for other
stuff, have a fan connector with, IIRC, 2 wires attached. This allows speed
control of the power supply fan and keeps things much quieter. That's what
 plugs on there.
Check the CPU fan connector - it will look like that.

In the manual it says, Attach the connector from the power fan to PWRFAN1
header... The PWRFAN1 header has three prongs. Two of the connectors
coming out of the power housing have four holes, none have three. Which
(if any) is supposed to connect to PWRFAN1? Do I need an adapter so it can
fit the three-prong header? My own computer has an Abit KR7A-133 board.
The equivalent passage in it is attach the connector from the power fan
to FAN3 header. I just looked and nothing is attached to that header,
and the only four-hole connector I see is plugged into the floppy drive.
Some friends online suggested that the power fan (ie. I assume the one in
the power box housing) is run _by_ the power box, that it doesn't need
to connect to the motherboard. Is that true? I notice that it isn't
turning now, but that might be because it doesn't need to. Looking at the
fan through the grill I can see the wires running from it but can't see
where they're going or if they're one of the bundles exiting the unit
at the rear. How _do_ I connect that fan, or do I need to do anything at
  all.

Hi Andrei
(please remove the Reply To in your mail program)

Did you have a power-problem on the PC? Did it crash lately?

I recognise the problems. My (very soon to be ex) normal PC keeps
crashing due to some weird hardware flaw, thus corrupting the info on
the disks. Most of the partitions there are EXT3 also. After 1 crash,
the FS was recovered quickly. But when things collapse every hour,
things on disk become such a mess that all kinds of other things seem to
go wrong. Things that EXT3 does not (probably can not) take into
account. A few times things went so wrong that I had to reformat / and
/usr and reinstall everything from scratch.

You should check if /var/log/linuxconf exists. If not, you can mkdir
that by hand (as root) and see if the problems go away. If more /var or
other problems occur, you would be best off to consider a reinstall.

Good luck.

Last time I had this problem it was a Windows machine using the wrong

used Ethereal to determine the IP addy.
Just installed Ethereal - a nice application! It just detected one
legit print job. Even if I never catch the culprit, I can have fun

Hi

Must be a collective attempt worldwide by ISP's to sabotage list users!
ROTFL... actually it was yahoo I had a problem with!

Tracked it down to the fact my ISP had suddenly decided to change my
static IP last Friday (its been the same for the last 6 months at least!).

I really must get a no-ip registration setup and use their IP tracker
program to sync my IP.

Once my DNS had updated and all the servers kicked in I got over 200
emails over 5 mins!

Friend of mine came by with his Sony Cybershot 2.1 megapixel DSC-S50; I
plugged it into the USB hub, turned the camera on, fired up kdf, saw
the camera as a mountable device, mounted it, navigated to the

Wasn't rocket science, but then again, Sony is a relatively large

Re: [newbie] URPMI.... once more, again.. Charlie

2003-06-30 Thread Charlie
quoting Curt Tresenriter; Sunday 29 June 2003 08:25 am:

 Hi Charlie,

Yes I did add a source for contrib before issuing the command.
Thanks for the tip about the build dir. I'll do that.
 Curt

Sorry about that Curt, busy weekend. It seems the message did get through, but
the ol' sympa shuffle was happening again. The Mandrake lists I subscribe to
were all missing until this morning in other words.

So; since you have added a contrib repository for urpmi to use, and you're
still having trouble, it would seem that you either have:

1.) a broken checkinstall built on the system and you have to urpme
checkinstall (to remove it) or,

2.) you actually need to rebuild the database.

In a terminal as root (su - )

updatedb

and strike the enter key. I don't know why you'd need to, it should be
happening at 4:00 AM by schedule.

Finally, some of the mirrors have been slightly wonky for a few months but
not continually and not with any consistency. You may have found one that has
a package shown that either; isn't really there, has incorrect permissions,
has an incorrect version number, or Other. That last means who the hell
knows, but have you actually browsed to the mirror and *looked* to see if
what you are trying to install is there?

That seems not to be the problem since you said the files are actually in the
/var/cache directory. Have you tried just (as root in an xterm) cd to
that directory and then use

rpm -ivh *.rpm

to install them? Worth a shot maybe. It's a drastic step, you may just be able
to run rpmdrake (type that in the root term you're using, it's the graphical
installer that's embedded in Mandrake Control Centre but can be run alone)
and search manually in the All Files Alphabetically category for them then
install them from there. But if urpmi is choking I wouldn't expect that to
work either.

I'm CC:'ing this to you privately just in case the list server has another
migraine. ;-)

Good luck.

Yes, it depends on what the text file looks like; in general, you're
going to probably use sort and then pipe it through uniq, such as

cat file.txt|sort|uniq -c

You might need to play some other tricks depending on the way the
numbers appear in your text file.

ext3 is really just ext2 with a not so good journal tacked on. As
such it doesn't recover very much better than ext2 does. Better to
use ReiserFS or XFS true journaling FS's. I'd suggest ReiserFS.
Doesn't help much with your problems now, but next time you
install, I'd advise you to avoid ext3. As to lost or corrupted
files, unless you have backups for 'em, I'm afraid you're SOL. You
might try lookin in the various 'lostfound' directories ext3
spread all over your system when it tried to recover.

OTOH, your corruption shouldn't have happened other than due to a
hard shutdown. If that was due to power failure, you need to invest
in an UPS. If you didn't have a hard re-set, your hard drive(s),
might be goin bad. The drive(s) probly came with a bootable floppy
and suitable diagnostics on it for that drive. If not, you can get
the floppy image from your drive's website. Otherwise see 'man
badblocks'.

You might also have a deficient HDD controller, specially if
you've got a win-raid motherboard, with the fake raid disabled in
bios, but are usin the extra ide ports. Other possible causes are
faulty ram, or PSU. There's other more remote causes like bad caps
on the motherboard, to somethin simple like ide cable(s) that need
re-seating or replacing. IOW's the reason can be many and/or
varied, but boil down to user (including choices), or hardware.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.

It's very simple, and not exclusive to Linux - it goes back to the early
 days of Unix.

The best way to think of it is that your filesystem is one of those
folders that has a separate plastic envelope for each page. Imagine
you're a secretary who has to store documents in such a folder. To
start off, you put in the first document at the beginning, then the
second document after it, and so on.

The difference comes when you bin some documents (delete files). If
 you're a Unix/Linux secretary, and you have a ten-page document, you
look for the first empty space in the folder that has at least ten
envelopes and put your document there. If you're a Windows secretary,
you start filing the document in the first empty space you find, even if
it only has three envelopes. You then look for another empty space, and
file the next few pages of your document, and so on. Eventually, the
documents in your foder are so spread out and mixed up that you have to
take them all out and put them back in some kind of order
 (defragmentation). Stupid, isn't it?

IIRC, the next week their number came up. Talk about some heart-broken people!

[newbie] RPM for X11 cursors?

Hi list,

I remember reading somewhere about an RPM for Mandrake that included
several different X11 cursor themes, but I can't remember where I read
it, or where they were located. Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the very thourough answer. I did not have a power failure and
my hardware is an old laptop. Next time I will choose ReiserFS.

Thanks a lot!

Can you explain what happened? And should I take any special
 action?

ext3 is really just ext2 with a not so good journal tacked on. As
such it doesn't recover very much better than ext2 does. Better to use
ReiserFS or XFS true journaling FS's.

If that was due to power failure, you need to invest in
an UPS. If you didn't have a hard re-set, your hard drive(s),
might be goin bad. The drive(s) probly came with a bootable floppy and
suitable diagnostics on it for that drive. If not, you can get the
floppy image from your drive's website. Otherwise see 'man
 badblocks'.

You might also have a deficient HDD controller, specially if
you've got a win-raid motherboard, with the fake raid disabled in bios,
but are usin the extra ide ports. Other possible causes are faulty ram,
or PSU. There's other more remote causes like bad caps on the
motherboard, to somethin simple like ide cable(s) that need re-seating
or replacing. IOW's the reason can be many and/or
varied, but boil down to user (including choices), or hardware.

Well, all the numbers from each are in a line, separated by a space,
so its reporting each line of numbers as occuring once. :-)

try

tr ' ' '\n' powerball.txt | sort | uniq -c | sort -r

There's a space between the first pair of quotes.

cat powerball.txt

Well, I saw you got an answer, now don't bet on it like I infer
you're fixin too ;) A knowledge, even intuitively, of random
mathematics, theory of chaos, would suggest that past numbers would
be more unlikely to turn up than those in future sets?

Actually if it is purely random then past behavior has no effect on
future performance. All numbers are always just as likely to occur, no
matter how often they have occured in the past.

 More likely
to included? Answer is No to both, but what t'hey, try usin those
sorted numbers, or avoid usin 'em. Tickets don't cost much, but
buyin multiple tickets only increases your losses, not your chances
in any appreciable sense. Worst way to decrease chances is usin the
same number set all the time. Specially if they would'a won the one
 time you forgot to play 'em ;

No, because we can assume that the numbers are almost, but not quite
random. If they were random then any more frequent numbers would be due
to pure chance, but if we assume that there is some other factor, say a
fault in the manufacture of a single ball, then that ball might come up
more frequently.

Here in the UK they also randomly select the batch of balls and the
machine to be used. In that case then maybe there is a fault on some
balls or machines that cause certain numbers to be more frequent, but
the most frequent numbers are likely to be with different ball-sets
and/or machines, so going blindly with the most frequent numbers is not
going to get the big win, but just maybe you might get more than
average three and four ball combinations.

Here in the UK the chances of winning the jackpot is 14 million to one.
That's an average of 269,230 years of playing once a week before
getting the jackpot, and then it's only 50% likely to happen. Miss that
and play for another 269,230 years and again its 50% likely you'll win.
Of course if you put on 14,000,000 plays in one week then you're more
likely to win quicker, but that would cost GBP 14,000,000 and the
jackpot is only a few million GBP. It has been done, (in the USA if I
remember correctly,) but generating and playing the millions of tickets
was very hard, and I imagine all the loopholes have now been closed.
For example the winning cartel printed their own tickets and the
company now require all tickets to be their own.

The only way to win at games of pure chance is to run the game.
A strange game; the only winning move is not to play.

Ronald, I suggest you generate the list of numbers, and then check them
against your big file and see how much money you would have won in the
last ten years. Then calculate how much you would have spent.

I don't think there's a version for 9.1, only cooker. I could be wrong, but
you can install the cooker one anyway. Any cooker contrib mirror, such as
this one:

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/contrib/i586/cursor_themes-0.0.1-2mdk.noarch.rpm

I don't recall what dependencies it had, it's been too long sorry.
