I have done that before myself with no problems..

but if you want to change it, it should be the same as any other
partition...

make a new partition and format it ext2 or 3, (dunno if it has to be at the
start of the disk or not, but it couldn't hurt)

copy everything from boot into it..

then edit /etc/fstab to point /boot to your new partiton..

reboot..

like I said, I have not done it with boot before, but I did it totally
sucessfully with /var in 8.1
(in my case, /var ran out of space and I needed heaps more, so I added
another drive (three in that system now)
and created /var2 on it.. formated it reiserfs and mounted it and copied
everything from var into it..

then edited fstab to mount that new partition as var and removed the entry
for the old one..

then rebooted and lo and behold,, it worked. I was feeling rather proud of
myself. :-)

My /etc/fstab line looks like this:

You probably shouldn't be using ReiserFS for /, though. There are some known

For a home system, basically nothing. I use it myself. Just be sure to mount
your partitions with the notail parameter.

However, we are talking about Red Hat, which is a server- and
business-oriented
distro. I don't believe that ReiserFS is the best choice of FS for servers.

Are you saying that you don't trust the entire RHN just because of a bug in
the
software? Do you think Red Hat did it on purpose? That sounds rather unfair
to
me. Remember, everything is GPL, just like MandrakeOnline. There is nothing

I think there may be a miss-understanding.

PM 7 can perform all its operation on NTFS as used in XP.
It is therefore possible to repartition an XP drive and install linux
without reformatting the disk, which in most cases would not have worked
because on the preinstalled XP system most will have either a restore cd
or a hidden partition restore image not a full version XP cd.

Linux has never beem able to resize NTFS (a far superior fs to fat) and yet
today there are many dual booting NT or Win2k with linux who used a third
party program to resize and then partition their hd.

[newbie] Suggestion to Mandrake

2001-10-26 Thread Loke Kit Kai

Hi...
Guys, am I right to say that when user interface is being tested, so far,
it is the techies that are doing the testing and evaluating about the user
friendlyness of the OS and about the control you have over ur system.
I think u guys should now start involving home users, users that aren't
even familiar with windows interface, and get their evaluation, to provide
the experience that home users are looking for, and yet provide the control
that techies are looking for...
Why? because for me, Mandrake 8.1, was a bad impression, because I change
the default shell to Cshell, and yet, all the basics commands like ls are
not working... I still haven't solve that as I'm having exams... but got a
lot of help from Tim and Steve... but if u really want to see Mandrake or
Linux win over markets dominated by microsoft, it's time to involve the home
users whom are equally important if not more, as techies made up only a
small fraction of computer users.
Let's work together to make Microsoft wake up its idea...

Need to ask you, is the below steps to change my default shell or to enable

Subject: Re: [newbie] Command not found

I would suggest running through these steps.

=
1) Login as root
a) As root, edit the /etc/passwd. To do that type the command vipw.
This will give you a vi editor that will edit the passwd
file.
b) Find your user, and change the shell, which is at the end of the
line to /bin/bash.
c) Copy the default envirnment files to the home directory.
cd /etc/skel
cp .bashrc .bash_profile /home/
cd /home/
chown : *

2) Logout as root.
3) Login as your user .
a) Run these commands.
which ls
which vi
which echo
b) If those commands give you:
/bin/ls
/bin/vi
/bin/echo
c) Then your shell is working properly, and your path is set up.
You should be able to now use ls, vi, and others with out getting
the command not found error.
=

As others have mentioned, the root account is not to be taken lightly. You
could remove every file on your machine with the root user. All you need to
do is type the command in the right place, or have a typo in one command and
do the same.

Some people are so paranoid about the root user, they disconnect their
machine from the Internet to do work as root! That's how "sacred" the root
user is!

So if you need admin work done, use the command, su -, to become the root
user, do your work, and then logout as root. Never login to Xwindows as
root, and never leave yourself logged in as root.

There are ways to your user up to perform root functions, but I HIGHLY
advise AGAINST it! It's a very bad idea. Just like Sridhar mentioned, bad
with a capital B!

Try going through your ~/.kde directory in search of Quanta+-specific files

It's still a bad way of doing things - if your userid has root power, then a
simple typing mistake can make a complete mess of your system. If you need
to do anything which requires any special privs, then it's a good "Do you
really want to do this" check to force you to su to root first.

It's your choice, but I'd strongly recommend you use your ordinary userid to
perform everyday tasks and only swap to root when you REALLY need to.

Sounds like you don't have your $PATH defined. Type this command, as
the
user, and let us know what you get.

/bin/echo $PATH

As the user, you should get something like this in return:

[timh@r2d2 timh]$ /bin/echo $PATH

/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/
timh/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games

The fact that you actually can log in and get a prompt, that means
that user
does have a shell, but since it can't find where the commands are,
that's
what makes me think that the PATH is not defined.

To define the $PATH, add this line to your $HOME/.bash_profile.

PATH=$PATH

And then add the word PATH to the end of the line that reads export.
So it
will then look like this most likely:

export BASH_ENV=$HOME/.bashrc PATH

If you have more things there, that's fine, but make sure you add
the PATH
there, and the PATH line in your ~/.bash_profile. That should then
fix that
command not found problem.

As far as the admin rights... There are things that will allow you
to do
that, but personally, as a Systems Admin, I would say stay away from
them.
It's much better and much more secure to just use the already
existing
super-user account. If you need to do something, login as root,
then logout
when you're done.

I would really like it if Mandrake would actually do what FreeBSD
does.
Where only users in the wheel group can su - root and then gain root
access.
But I'm not sure if that's every been considered or even suggested.
But
that's just me.

Hope that helps you, if not, let us know.

fully qualify the command name. For example,

/bin/ls
/bin/cd
/bin/vi

However, if your path is as you show below, it should work. Maybe your login
script isn't exporting the path to subshells... Can see why not though.

All the new ram is the same...got it yesterday...from spartantech.com
and sorry, it was xms memory not ems...
I took out two chips...just to see what would happen
and it then read 64 mg...on memtest bootup...so i don't think
that could be it...(possiblity, but don't think so)
I think it may be...my win98 CD...it's old and got a few scratches...
perhaps, at the point it installs the himem.sys file...that file is
messed up or corrupted on the CD...and therefore the error.
I'm going to buy new CD ...and see if that works.

RE: [newbie] Linux bashing again by Intel??

2001-06-23 Thread Loke Kit Kai

I don't understand what are you trying to put through to me... basically, my
language is on the weaker side...

I do hate what Microsoft is doing, and I am impressed with Mandrake, trying
to provide a user friendly os, but it will stop there if other applications
do not provide the same user friendness Mandrake has provided... Remember,
the whole world is full of non techies, and people who do not want to spend
lots of time configuring their system... I just started a company with my
classmate... do you think I can afford to spend time trying to get the
drivers for my efficient adsl modem when mandrake itself don't want to
support me? I followed the instructions, and what did I get, blank response.
I posted to this mailing list, and what did I get, blank response. If you
were in my shoes, do you think you will still faithfully stick to linux to
solve the problem? I am already thinking of getting new hardware to solve
that problem, because I can't wait any longer... But any useful assistant
for configuring Samba would be appreciated. Don't tell me to refer to the
documentation, because I don't understand it...
Now, I would love to see linux succeed, but from the looks of it, it still
have a long way to go... How about you guys stop arguing about the articles,
and do something about the interface to cater for people who are not
techies!!! You can open up the computer to learn the parts doesn't mean that
the rest of the world needs to... Every person in the world plays a
different role, and that role doesn't need in depth understanding about the
internal workings about the computer...

ok, here we go again. i'm so happy when you guys post stuff
like this because in all seriousness, all it does is piss
me off. so forgive me because i'm about to spout.

ok, not suited for the desktop? then why, oh why, do i use
linux for EVERYTHING EXCEPT GAMES...ok? ACTUALLY, i take
that back! now i have Quake 3, Alpha Centauri, and a boat
load of FREE ones that i play on my linux box when i feel
the need.

you see, the miracle of this FREE OS is that it's conquered
the HEARTS of people who TRULY APPRECIATE COMPUTING. the
CORPORATE CULTURE lends itself to the world of MONEY and
ADVOCACY. along with that, add freaky phrases like
LICENSING, and PIRACY, and .net. how could they (meaning
those WINTEL bastards) capitalize or function with a FREE
system? they simply can't SELL IT. a lot of them don't even
understand that it's for real. trust me...i work with these
guys every day. again, a lot of these guys ASSUME that
because it's free, then it must be, in linus's own words,
'a piece of crap'.

linux is based on an IDEA...a principle if you
willFREE. intel, and all these other idiots can shut
the hell up. they're whining and complaining like every
other typical american consumer when they get something for
free. WHAT? I HAVE TO PUT IT TOGETHER? i try to make an
analogy for people...something like: what if instead of
just buying a car, you were sent the partsall of
themfor free or at least for a very low price (which,
by the way, can be done of course). the problem is, the car
is completely disassembled. you don't even know where to
start. so, you would probably spend a lot of TIME trying to
figure it out. but, if you're curiosity factor was strong
enough, you'd go out and spend a souple o' bucks on a
CHILTON and start learning how to put the sucker together.
eventuallly, through a little trial and error, you WOULD
learn how to build a car...by reading the manuals and
ASKING OTHER EXPERIENCED PEOPLE (aka mailing list!!!) how
to put certain things together. maybe you would NEED to
spend some extra cash for a mechanic to help you...maybe
you would NEED to spend the extra cash to beef up your
engine a little. but, after SUCCESSFULLY building your car,
you would have yourself one nice ride. AND, then you could
SHARE (aka bragging LOL) your experience with others who
want to know how to do it. difficult process? yes. time
consuming? yes. but in the end, you should feel pretty damn
good because you just built your own car. AKA LINUX.

this OS was never intentionally made for the market...it
was a college kid's science project and of course, we've
found a way to 'bastardize' it and throw it into out
corporate marketplace. THAT IS NOT WHAT IT WAS MADE FOR.
you all need to get that clear in your head...NOW. it's an
experiment...it's a hobby...it is POWERFUL but it's power
does NOT BELONG TO ANY ONE PERSON OR COMPANY. the beauty of
this silly little science project is that NEVER has any one
stupid little computer gadget sparked such a community
effort worldwide! never has something so 'marketable' (aka
FREE) become so available! think about it. i read these
lists every day and more and more and more people are
beginning to realize that the way we are 'used' to doing
things does not have to be goverened by one company who's
selling the 'standard' set of software with the 'standard'
OS for a seemingly reasonable price...as long as you don't
make illegal copies, you won't go to jail. isn't that a
nice feeling? me thinks not. you now have a CHOICE. INTEL,
has a CHOICE. M$, INTEL, Apple, AMD, ALL those guys...they
can write all the shallow arguments they want.

if linux is so 'non-standard', then why are there literally
HUNDREDS of desktop environments available...and program
packages? HELLOOO! what the hell is KDE? i've only been
using linux for about a year now and in just a YEAR, i've
seen KDE grow into something M$ WISHES they had. i just
don't get where the hell they're going with THEIR argument.

[newbie] wordperfect 8.0 fix

2001-05-27 Thread Kit

I just got thru installing Word Perfect 8.0 for linux
and i see the problem...
if you decided to install it in your user directory (/home/??)
then I believe when you create the desktop link...you should
select to also run it "IN A TERMINAL"...with no options added.
then it will always come up and run...

after clicking on "xwp" the first time...in konqueror...it came up and
ran..
but on subsequent trys...it would start to...then crash...
this fixes this problem...at least for myself...

and from what I seen on the corel site..if you install
as root...you create a big security problem. They suggest installing it
in your user diranyways.

Re: [newbie] Trying to install Linux-Mandrake 7.0

2000-06-29 Thread Kit Goins

first you have to make sure...that "lilo" is installed on your hard
drive,,,that has linux on it...then lilo has to be configured to boot
linux first...not windows...
then bootmagic...must be configured correctly...

I have partitionmagic 5.0 it comes with bootmagic...
and this is how I have it, on my system...it's setup like yours...
except...for I have a 8.4 gig hd with two partitions...windows is the
first...and linux second...
I have lilo on the linux part...not on the MBRand use
bootmagic...to boot to lilo...which in turn, boots to linux

hope this helps

Re: [newbie] errors

2000-03-13 Thread Kit

okay, this is what I did...I went into httpd.conf

and changed the servername to 216.41.122.89 (current ip),
then commented out namevirtualserver

then in inetd.conf ...instead of standalone...I inserted "inetd"
I then brought up a console...and gave the command " httpd"
then inserted my ip address into browser location bar
and walah...my site finally came up...
does that mean it's fixed...? only thing the images don't show

they use too much technical jargon...they don't remember that

technical knowlegdge,
they wouldn't be asking questions...they would of fix their own
problem...man, what
a bunch of dum people...for knowing so much as they do...

First of allall you need to do...is

   /MNT/HDA1

from within a filemanager, or within your HOME dir/folder...
just keep going UP or back to a folder/dir called HDA1
it will be inside the dir /mnt/hda1

second, I hope you don't plan on executing any " .EXE " files
from within Linux...cause it won't work. It's not supposed to.

complete,

Audrey this is why:

all other slots, be it PCI or ISA are taken up...
I have a logitech marble mouse connected to com1 ...03f8-03ff IRQ 4
and on the same card, is a 25 pin female plug
then,
I have a BestData VW-PCI 56k winmodem hooked up to com2 IRQ 9,
in windows, and IRQ3 in DOS

I do have two ISA slots left, that are free...

Hi, Bernadomy server doesn't run 24 hours a day...yet.
therefore, you'll have to email me...when you are online...and if I'm online then I
startup my server...
or usually I have it on ,when I'm online anyways. Perhaps if you had ICQ, it would be
better

Re: [newbie] Windows Protection?

2000-02-27 Thread Kit

okay...this is what i would doif you have your windows emergency startup
disk...
or perhaps a DOS boot diskyou could try this command

FDISK/MBR

I would first try this with your windows startup disk,
then if need be, try the DOS bootdisk
this will bring your master boot record back to normal...
then uninstall partition magic...and just use mandrake's DISK DRUID...

[newbie] here's help...for all

2000-02-24 Thread Kit

Guess what...this is Kit...and I've had some many problems...since I had
linux...
starting with a MacMillian software release of 6.1 Mandrake...then
trying to
get a CD iso from a friend, to having another friend finally sending me
the new 7.02.

I installed or rather UPGRADED from the 6.1 to the 7.02...and still had
problems...
UNTIL...I said...the heck with all this re-installing "OVER" the older
version,
why not do a complete FRESH install...and guess what?
IT FINALLY WORKSeverything finally works the way it should...!
I almost can't believe it...
I suggest that if anyone has problems with this or that not working...at
first...
to do a COMPLETE FRESH installNOT an UPGRADE...
start all over from scratch...and let it do its thing normally...
after the install, you can always install anything else you may want

but, let it do its own thing AT FIRST. JUST SELECT RECOMMENDED.

NOT( " HOME " ) just home without the quotes or paranthesis

insert this: /home

then try ityou must first place a partition called /home in there
also...along with the other one /

then when install is complete, IT will automatically (after you give it
another username/password
beside your own)insert another user.

this is what partitions you should have: one for "root" / and one
for "home" /home

just insert this

/ for the root, and/homefor the home partition

Re: [newbie] help me please(internet)

First, you must be certain...your modem is NOT a winmodem...or a PCI
modemthen, make sure you have linux seeing it on the right port.
try using all the com ports under linux...ie ttyS0,ttyS1, etc.
also try /dev/modem at the top...
what modem is it?

Re: [newbie] Uninstall? Please Help a Newbie!

1999-12-21 Thread Kit

Okay...first...in order to install another OS...you must FIRST
install the other OS, THEN linux.

in order to get a new fresh re-installI believe you must first
use the command: fdisk/mbr

this will take out the LILO ...and allow you to then install
winNT...then re-install linux.

use your DOS boot disk...when using the fdisk/mbr command.
everything should be fine then...
