Also, if Microsoft built a firewall that actually did block outgoing traffic, how would they receive user data? Their own product would be blocking the data transmissions that they seem to desperately need. Uh... spyware in their OS's? It's worse than that. I had ZoneAlarm running on a laptop that sometimes connected to the Internet via dialup -- ZA was a pretty decent inexpesive solution that let me disable all inbound and enable outbound POP/HTTP for minimal connectivity. Imagine my surprise when I hooked up an external mouse (Intellimouse) and installed the drivers for it. It wasn't 10 seconds before I was getting ZA popups asking me if the mouse drivers could access the Internet. For pete's sake... why the @$#%$ does a mouse driver need network access. The same is true for the Microsoft keyboard, Visio and a few other MS products. [newbie] Mail Server/Virus Protection
Sort of off topic, but no more so than zings and seasons so I'm going for it. My whole reason for installing Drake 10 was because my current virus protection vendor did another price hike and I decided to bail... I've pretty much decided to do clam (my mail server is qmail), but I thought the nice, intelligent people on this list could shed some light on the alternatives. To be quite frank, looking for a replacement is a pain and I haven't got the brain cells to weed through 5000 Google hits. Any recommendations? [newbie] Cannot ping Mandrake 10
I just installed Mandrake 10 from CD. The install is pretty basic -- no office, development environment and basic network services. From the new machine, I can ping other computers both inside and outside my network. I cannot ping the new machine from other machines on my local network, nor can I access any of the network services (ssh server). I've checked all the usual stuff (IP address, netmask) and it's accurate. What else should I look for? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Audigy 2 ZS Sound Problem fixed and here is what I did
I recently did a clean installation of Mandrake 10.0 Community. The installation process lived up to Mandrake's fame as a user-friendly distro. Only problem I had was the Audigy 2 ZS sound card could not work. If you have the same problem, you might be interested to know that the optical raw needs to be turned off (which is on by default) in order for Audigy 2 to play sound. I used Alsa mixer to turn it off. Not sure about other mixers but I recommend using Alsa. In addition, Linuxquestions.org is a very nice website for newbies to ask questions as most are very willing to offer suggestions there. Thank you all who tried to help in one way or another. [newbie] Soundblaster Audigy 2 no sound in MDK 10 Community
Hello robin, I have an audigy 2 LS and can't get it to work on Mandrake 10.0 as well. I checked mixer settings and volume was on. Soundcard was correctly detected and module loaded. [newbie-it] X-CD-Roast su mdk8.2
Salve a tutti. Actually, I am encountering error messages during shutting down my system. Below are the error messages that are displayed during shutdown: /etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line -76: 5401 segmentation fault $* What does the error messages mean? How will I get over it? Re: [newbie] Linux Mandrake vs Linux Suse
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Generally speaking I am thinking that US is not that strong on Linux market. RedHat is of course an american company but it looks that is not that popular as these two distributions. I don't have any comments about this. Sorry. If I would like to compare two distributions(see Mandrake vs Suse) which should be the criteria ? Can we say that Mandrake is more user firendly than Suse ? or Suse is faster than Mandrake ? Are out there some clear outlined criteria on comparing these Linux distributions ? I don't have any comments about this 'cause I wasn't able to use Suse in the first place. The reason is that I am a developer currently working on Microsoft platform but I intend to enlarge my skill set and knowledge with Java. For me Java has a bright future on Linux and this makes me to focus on Java development. Good for you. At the moment I need a good distribution to stick to, let's say... . I had the feeling that Suse is a more solid Linux distro, a more Server and development focused. I may be wrong thinking in this way, but this is the feeling which I have. Well, it depends on how you configure your box. There's no such thing as best distro. I think will not be bad for Mandrake to include in its distro more support for developers and especially for Java. I suggest that the following things should be included on further Mandrake distros: 1. Java JDK 2. Java JRE 3. Most Java Application Servers -- Jboss, Orion, etc 4. Java IDE such as: JBuilder, IBM VisualAge, etc 5. Borland's Kylix 6. Other IDE and tools which may be of interest for developers. That's actually a good suggestion but I don't think they will. Those packages that you mentioned are not Open Source and basically, I don't think Sun, Borland, etc. will just permit Mandrake without this so-called partnership. Just like what Suse and Oracle did. Many of the tools presented above are open source or could be easily included on Mandrake's cds distro. I don't think so. As I've mentioned, those softwares are NOT Open Source, AFAIK. Besides, as what I've said, it is not that easy to include those softwares in their (Mandrake) next version 'cause it needs the permission of the companies' concerned. If that's the case, Mandrake should include StarOffice also or probably OpenOffice. Keep cool! =) __ www.edsamail.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Is there any Word Processor that can save output as PDF file? Shall we say, I will make a document but I will save it as PDF file and can be viewed like xpdf or Adobe Acrobat Reader. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. =) __ www.edsamail.com Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] rpm 4 macros
Greetings! I'm trying to rebuild postgresql-7.1.1-3mdk.src.rpm in LM72. Suddenly, It just stop. I looked at the spec file and found out that it was written in rpm 4 (using new macros). If I can just get my hands on LM80, I would execute rpm --eval %name_of_macro. Thanks for the time. Sherwin

[newbie] a twist on standard backspace problem
I read the KDE2 FAQ and followed their suggestion to place the following lines xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = BackSpace' xmodmap -e "keysym Delete = BackSpace" in my .xinitrc file. The backspace key works fine when I first log in now (deletes char to the left of cursor and moves cursor to the left) but somehow at some later point in the session the keycode 22 gets mysteriously changed to Delete and then the Backspace key doesn't work as desired anymore. Any suggestions on how to determine the application that is changing keycode 22 from BackSpace to Delete and how to prevent this behavior in the future? I'm using XFree4 if that is important. Thanks.
[newbie] video problem in standby mode
I'm using a KDE desktop and XFree4 under Mandrake 7.2 with an ATI Mach64 video card and a Hitachi CM751U monitor. With DPMS enabled, the monitor blanks for a few seconds after the timeout period set with xset, but then an "Invalid Scan Freq." message appears from the monitor and the screen shows a garbled video signal. Pressing any key brings back the desktop. In the BIOS (ABIT BH6 rev. 1.1) I have ACPI disabled and APM enabled. I also disabled the BIOS-level power management. I've tried Video Off Methods: "DPMS", "Blank Screen", "VH Sync + Blank Screen" respectively; nothing fixes the problem. Any suggestions on how to get the screen to stay blank during standby? Many thanks in advance. (P.S. In general I'd like to learn more about how Mandrake supports desktop power management. Can anyone point me in the right direction?)
[newbie] Mandrake 7.2 and power management
I recently posted re. problems I've had with a garbled video signal appearing in place of the screen blanking in standby mode. Now I have a configuration that works (after many attempted permutations): turn off APM, ACPI, and BIOS-level power management options in the BIOS and set display power management with xset dpms 600 0 0, and *not* with the KDE power management configuration control panel. Power management under Mandrake looks like a black box to me. I'd still be interested in any references that explain what control programs are using what power management systems, what Mandrake supports/doesn't support, and known issues with specific hardware. Thanks.

[newbie] Mandrake 7.2- Afterstep Enlightment OpenSSH OpenSSL Kerberos 5
First off thank you for finally fixing the boot sequence when it pretains to pcmcia cards and laptops. This new release helps my laptop get on the network immediately because the pcmcia card is initialize before the network dhcp is. KDE looks good and for that matter so does Gnome. Some of the functions still don't work in KDE in Beta 3, but it is a beta. I did notice a couple of my favorite windows managers. Where is my lovely Afterstep and Enlightment. I enjoy having desktops with absolutely nothing, but windows pagers. I love not seeing the Gnome start menu and Kde desktop. I like open spaces. Is there any plans to include them in the final or next beta release. Also since Red Hat 7.0 has included the openssh, openssl, and kerberos support is their any plans to include these packages with the final release of Mandrake 7.2 Eric
