[newbie] graphical boot up under 8.2
hiho all, I am wondering why i haven´t already read such a question here (or did i miss it ?). Anyway - as the subject says - how can i get rid of this graphical bootup screen - it SUCKS ! I want the normal text bootup back, black background and linux kernel messages floating down my screen. I already searched in deja which turned up with the solution to uninstall the bootsplash rpm and removin the quit option from the append line in lilo.conf. It didnt solve my problem - in 8.1 one was able to switch off this feature in mandrake control - but this isnt possible any more, the option is gone (why ) So - can anybody provide a solution to this (i am pretty sure there are lots of u who want to kick this graphical bootup too ;) greets --qu Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] mandrake 8.1 and mandrake-update
hiho all i just booted mandrake 8.1 again - after about 2 months of using windows2k i felt like giving mandrake 8.1 again a try. when i booted up 8.1 the first time after installing i was really pleased by the new kde 2.2 and all the apps it came with. just a few minutes ago i thought about applying all the security and bugfix updates - and i tried mandrake-update. mandrake-update, it didnt work with 7.2 and 8.0 (at least for me) - i had thought that meanwhile mandrake would have managed to get it working - but no. i created a new source for the downloads - chose a server and i got a list of all the updates that were available. so far so good - but : 1) why the hell is the window which lists all the updates so SMALL ? on my screen the list of all the updates is about 2cm in height - with scrolling arrows next to it. its not possible to resize the list - to see more packages at one time, so there are only about 5-8 visible at a time. this is really annoying. 2) i choose the packages that i want upgraded - and it begins to search for the packages - after a while it replies an error occured while fetching package x a) why cant it tell WHICH error ?? b) i made sure to use the correct server - i tried logging manually in the server - and i checked the proper directory - i also checked whether the regarding file was definitely on the server - and it was ! despite of this mandrake-update isnt able to fetch the file - this SUCKS ! 3) sometimes i am not able to start mandrake-update at all - it loads partially - leaving me with a grey main-window and its not possible to close it any more - so i have to kill it every time by opening a console - suing to root and then killing it by pid (if i want to kill it with the pid monitoring program under X i certainly get u are not permitted to kill this app - why cant it ask for the superuser-password allowing me to kill it out of X ?? - instead it forces me every time to open a console and killing it as superuser - this is time-consuming, complicated and frustrating !) now please dont tell me things like download the rpm file manually and install it using command line rpm because i know how to handle rpm command line - but why use it if there is a X-utility that does it with a few clicks ? i know people are proud of being able to use console - and i am too - but if there is the possibility to safe time and make things easier and faster - why not use it ? another thing i hate about the desktop-linux is that there is no browser that can view websites properly. regardless which fonts/font-size/browser i use - i always get bad-looking fonts - not so smooth like ms-ie shows. has anybody of u been able to get mandrake-update working - or to get a browser that shows smooth good looking fonts ? dont misunderstand me - i like linux - and i am using a linux server that handles mail-dns-samba-antivir-ftp-telnet and so on. but this is console - and it works well... but what does not work - in my eyes - is the X-part of linuxso - are u experiencing the same problems i do - or is it just my lack of ability to get things working smooth under X ? should i use gnome rather than KDE ? - are apps working better under gnome ?? i mean - regarding desktop-functions/programs windows is far superior to linux. i currently run win2k and it runs perfectly stable - all programs are running without any problems - under linux i am running into endless loops, requiring me a high amount of time to - for example - simply install a program (everybody of u knows : dependencies that require dependencies that requireetc.) i can understand that this is frustrating newbies that use linux first time - as it does me - and i am using linux now for about 1.5 years. (although i was using more console than X) so - please dont flame - we´re on the same side ;) i am just really sick of non-working apps under X that *should* make life easyier - but dont do. all suggestions/advices/opinions are welcome ;) --quaylar Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? In common with quite a few people, I would expect, I'm a long-time Windows hack trying out Linux because of Borland's Kylix, aka Delphi for Linux. I'm starting from as near zero knowledge of Linux as makes no difference. Living in a very rural area of Pennsylvania, I have a choice of exactly one cable access provider, and they're a bit paranoid, to put it mildly. They've managed to configure their access systems in such a way as to (deliberately!) prevent use of a router as a hardware firewall, unless you buy their much more expensive commercial access. Now, when my machine is booted in Windows, I see an average of something like 30 unauthorised access attempts a day (the 24.x.y.z IP address of most cable modems is an open invitation). So far as Windows is concerned, I use Zone Alarm as a software firewall, and everyone is reasonably happy (even if I'm still a bit annoyed about having a perfectly good router sitting on my desk doing nothing). I have two questions. 1) Is there an equivalent to Zone Alarm for the Linux world - a software firewall that will work out of the box? yes there is - its called ipchains for 2.2.x kernels and iptables for 2.4.x kernels. ipchains/iptables is a part of linux and it offers the possibility to build up a real packet filter firewall by configuring a set of rules for your computer. if u really want to understand what ipchains does and how it does - and if u want to build up your own firewall with your own ruleset i would suggest u reading : 1) for ipchains the IPCHAINS-HOWTO 2) for iptables : man iptables, netfilter-hacking howto, iptables-howto, packetfilter-howto if u just want a quick and easy firewall u can try bastille firewall or tiny firewall (i dunno whether its the same) u can configure it with a gui within the mandrake control center (drakconf), theres a menu-item firewall under security. i dont know much about it because personally i prefer to build my own rules, but basically what it will do is, ask u a set of questions and build a ruleset related to your answers. search the mailing list archives for subject bastille and it should come up with numerous postings regarding bastille firewall(its a frontend to ipchains/iptables i think) 2) If there isn't such a firewall, I'm being swamped by the amount of documentation that I need to read - is there a Newbie's guide to Linux security out there somewhere that will mean that I can block out the hackers while I'm learning the rest of the OS? an excellent source for documentation of all kind is www.linuxdoc.org - they offer all the howtos and also guides (check these out - theres a linux security guide too i think) Thanks, hth --quay - !-- If privacy is outlawed, only outlaws will have privacy -- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I have the same controller and I have had that problem. You've got two hard drives that have been marked down as the bootable drive and I'm not just about where LILO is installed. For example, I had a drive that had Windoze installed on it and when I installed LM I installed it and LILO to a different hard drive. Diskdrake assumes you know what you're doing and isn't going to go look for other hard drives being marked as bootable and this is what leads to the conflict you see. To fix it, boot into rescue mode and run fdisk on the hard drive you don't want to be booting from and turn off the bootable partition. u sure that that will work if i turn off the bootable flag from my first hd (win2k running) then i wouldnt be able to boot it ??? since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root partition of the corresponding drive instead of the MBR. i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work with the promise controller - but up to now i wasnt able to find it --quay Richie Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] mandrake 8.1 on promise ATA100 controller
u sure that that will work if i turn off the bootable flag from my first hd (win2k running) then i wouldnt be able to boot it ??? The bootable flag just lets the BIOS know which hard drive to give control to. It does not effect a partition's ability to boot an OS. yes - and i want the bios to give control to the first hd on the via controller - because it holds the nt loader - which has an entry for linux (bootsect.lin on my c: drive) since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root partition of the corresponding drive instead of the MBR. The Win2000 NT Loader is very tenacious-- it's not going to give up control just because you have LILO installed on another partition. yes - i dont want it to give up control ;) it has an entry for linux anyways - so i should but it up fine. i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work with the promise controller - but up to now i wasnt able to find it The driver was necessary for 2.2 kernels but the module for running the Promise ATA100 controller is included with 2.4 kernels (including LM8.x). yes - i wondered about that - since linux was showing up something labeled promise controller at bootup. meanwhile i came across this on usenet : it seems that lilo doesnt know which drive to boot from because the bios doesnt recognize the drive - and thats right - bios cant recognize the drive because its hooked to the promise controller which has its own bios... so how can i solve this prob ? --quay PS : btw - every email of u is coming twice - any reason for this ? theres one more thing i just remember : when first installing lilo - i got the messages : Warning : BIOS drive 0x83 may be inaccessible ! what confuses me about this is : 0x83 would be secondary slave - so it would be my LS120 floppy disk drive. it seems to me that lilo is trying to access the LS120 drive - when i boot up in linux and all the 01 are appearing on the screen the little green led on the LS120 is flashing in similar frequency the 01 are appearing. does this look familiar to anyone ?anyone who might shed some light on this one ? --quay Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] choosing packets under 7.2
hi all.. i am just about installing 7.2 and theres one REALLY annoying thing going on : whenever i come to the point of choosing which packages to install, i choose from the main packages and i know when counting the MBs in brackets i ALWAYS get below 1 GB. now whatever i choose - regardless if i go back and deselect packages - mandrake ALWAYS tells me that it could only install 65 % of the packages i chose. why the hell does it say so ???..i know for sure that the packages are below 1 GB (and i do have a 1029 MB drive). this is driving me crazy, its hell to add all the different packages i lack later... i first tried a text only install and there it worked without any problems ! Furthermore the text-only install doesnt provide a partition utility whereas the gui does---why ??? i was only offered to decide between the existing partitions or the hd i wanted to install mandrake to. now i have 1 IDE and 1 SCSI disk, i wanted the / system to be on IDE and /usr to be on SCSI. but mandrake only allowed me to put the whole system EITHER on IDE or EITHER on SCSI ( and it created the partitions itself - it didnt ask me if i wanted to create them myself ! - btw i was in expert mode !) this is really disappointing, those things make installing mandrake a pain ! has anyone else experienced those things ? --quay -- -Quaylar- Icq# 30932448 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ! And my other question is what is the difference in IPCHAINS for INPUT, OUTPUT and FORWARD, I am confused as to the meaning of these well..as the name says, INPUT is the chain for all packets that are coming into your machine (regardless which interface, either from your lan or the internet) OUTPUT is the chain for all packets leaving your machine (to the internet or to your lan) and FORWARD is the chain for all packets which are just passing the server, for example if u have a masqed machine behind your linux server, all the packets coming from the masqed machine (destined for lets say the internet) will traverse the FORWARD chain. that is why u would have to have a masq target in your FORWARD chain (if u are doing masquerading ;) ) i recommend the ipchains howto at www.linuxdoc.org , it has a very good description of the different chains and how they are handled. The Ethernet terminators are there to reduce or eliminate this, which is why they are at the physical "ends" of the cable. They are not always successful. You may be seeing the same. i switched terminators to no avail. You may have a bad "T" connector as well. I've seen more bad "T" connectors than one would expect. Check your lan cables. Make sure that the center pin is not being pushed into the socket when you plug it into the Ethernet card or T connector. ah...i checked the lan cables and indeed 1 of the 2 center pins was pushed into the socket. i pulled it out to make sure it hits the receptacle. and i noticed that the center pins of the 2 T connectors i was using, were not as long as the center pins in 2 other T-connectors. so i switched them too. but it still doesnt work. This will also cause problems. The center pin must not move so it can penetrate the receptacle. [newbie] resource conflict with 2 nics
hi all. im going to get adsl, so i installed a second nic in my server. a surecom ep-325 pci card. i recompiled kernel - built the modules - loaded the modules everything went fine, upon bootup both cards (a 3c509 as ath0 and the surecom as eth1) are recognized correctly. eth0 (the 3com) is showing up IRQ 10 eth1 (surecom) is showing up IRQ 11 whenever i try to bring up eth0 i get a resource conflict, so i checked /proc/interrupts and saw that eth1 was indeed using IRQ 11 whereas IRQ10 was used by my SCSI controller. my conclusion : eth0 was using IRQ 11 before, but the surecom card (pci) is set to use IRQ 11 only, so eth0 had no free interrupt. my cards are initialized by the bios, so i knew there were only 2 ways: 1) set the surecom card to use another IRQ than 11 2) set the 3com card to use another one than 10 ad 1) trying the config util that came with my surecom card i had to notice that i wasnt offered to change the irq of the card it was fixed to 11 (why that ?.isnt it possible to change the IRQ of PCI cards manually ? ) ad 2) i also wasnt able to change the irq of the 3com card with the config progr. so i decided to set "pnp os=yes" and let linux do the resource allocation. setting 3com to IRQ 12 (free) in /etc/isapnp.conf, after a reboot i got the same failure again, again the 3com was trying to use IRQ 10 instead of what i told it to use (12) having a look at isapnp.conf again i noticed that linux had commented out the line, saying IRQ 12, by itself. the 3com card is set to PnP, may this be the reason for this behaviour ? i dont think that it can be that difficult to solve this resource conflict, im sure im pretty close to it, but there must be somthing im missing, can anybody help ? greetz, --quay ------ -Quaylar- Icq# 30932448 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ! [newbie] Lilo problems......
hi all. i have following problem: i want to make a backup of my existing root filesystem which resides on a 500 MB IDE disk, hda for this to work i chose a second 500 MB IDE disk and copied the whole disk via norton ghost, hdb then i rebooted, mountet the duplicate (hdb) and installed lilo in the MBR of hdb by issuing "lilo -b /dev/hdb" in the etc directory of hdb. i got : "ignoring entry boot=" and : "warning : /dev/hdb is not the first disk" i ignored these warnings because i knew hdb would get the first disk by plugging out the old hda and jumpering hdb to master. so i continued : another reboot, plugged out the old hda, re-jumpered hdb to master (which made it hda) and (tried) to boot linux... the only thing i got was : LI nothing else.then my machine locked up. has anyone any advice on this ?..what am i doing wrong ?...i cant imagine.this HAS to worki have a 1:1 copy of the root fs, lilo.conf is ok and lilo is in the MBR.so.i cant imagine why this doesnt work. thx for any advice u can give... --quay ------ -Quaylar- Icq# 30932448 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ! [newbie] disk partiton problems......
hi this is a ..hmm.more general than mandrake-related problem..but maybe someone can help me on this though: i have 2hdd in my P200 server: hda :500 MB : hda1 swap 64 MB hda2 ext2 linux extended 440 MB hda5 ext2 root partition hdb: 500 MB: hdb1 500 MB /usr part. now i got several things working on my system and i want to make a backup of my hole system to be able to simply put out the 2x500 hdds and put another hdd with my backup system on in. for this reason i have one 1 GB scsi disk which i want to transfer my existing system to. i want sda to carry : 100 MB swap 200 MB root 700 MB /usr (because i do not have enough space on the IDE disk.500 MB are too less) so i got norton ghost, created a boot disk and booted into ghost, ready to do a partition to partiton copy of my IDE drive to the scsi drive. problems: 1) i want to decrease the size of the root partition on the scsi drive to 200 MB (from the original 440 MB on the IDE) to get more space for /usr, but ghost will only let me copy the existing root partition to a part. on the scsi drive that is at least as big as the original. so my 1st problem is how to manage to decrease root partition from 440 MB to 200 MB..because there are only 90 MB actually used from the 440. 2) i already tried to leave the root partition untouched, copying it with the full 440 MB, just to get things working for now, everything seemed to work ok, i rebooted with my normal linux system on the IDE drive, mounted the scsi root and edited lilo.conf to contain : boot=dev/sda (i have a linux standalone, so i want to use the MBR for LILO) and i set the pathnames for the rootpart. accordingly to /dev/sda5 then i issued a : lilo -C lilo.conf -b /dev/sda from the command line in the /mnt/sda/etc/ directory to install LILO in the MBR of the scsi disk. i also modified fstab to contain the valid drive names. then i rebooted, set my bios to boot from scsi ( i made sure that my scsi disk is ID0, since i found postings on deja stating that u can only boot from ID0 scsi) and got following from LILO : LI nothing more..then my machine hangs.. i tried to go the other way, installing LILO in the root part. and setting the bootable flag with fdiskno change. LILO just seems to be unable to start from the scsi disk.. has anyone any hints on this ?.. -- -Quaylar- Icq# 30932448 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ! Knowledge is power

I dont even have a network card! I wasnt aware that eth0 was relating to a network card. Do I need a network card to activate multicast? Basically, this is single installation of linux and I'm doing some Java development that requires multicast IP to be activated. I dont connect to a network (and dont want to) I just want to activate multicast. any ideas? following is a short cut from the multicast howto (http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Multicast-HOWTO.html): If you want just to send and receive, you must say yes to "IP: multicasting" when configuring your kernel. If you also want your Linux box to act as a multicast router (mrouter) you also need to enable multicast routing in the kernel by selecting "IP: forwarding/gatewaying", "IP: multicast routing" and "IP: tunneling", the latter because new versions of mrouted relay on IP tunneling to send multicast datagrams encapsulated into unicast ones. This is necessary when establishing tunnels between multicast hosts separated by unicast-only networks and routers. (The mrouted is a daemon that implements the multicast routing algorithm -the routing policy- and instructs the kernel on how to route multicast datagrams). Some kernel versions label multicast routing as "EXPERIMENTAL", so you should enable "Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers" in the "Code maturity level options" section. for details check out the complete howto @ provided url. maybe this gets u on the right way..;) anyways..i dont understand what sense it makes to activate multicast without a network card.. --quay
