[newbie] sound in mdk 10
All, I have finally got mdk 10 working on my Asus M6 laptop, but frustratingly am missing the sound. Can anyone tell me how I might be able to get around this? Mdk picks it up as a Intel Corp ICH4 845 G/GL Chipset AC97. It is the only aspect (apaer from my soft modem) that I cant get to work. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Wayne
RE: [newbie] sound in mdk 10
Stevie, I wish! It doesn't exist at all, in fact the arts sound server crashes on startup. It only really gives me two options for the sound card. I am going to reinstall and try again today. Let me guess - XMMS won't play, KDE crashes on startup, Mplayer is flakey? Check your sound driver in DrakConf (go to Hardware and configure the sound driver from there). I noticed that the sound driver that Mandrake was using was different to the one I had used to MDK9.0... I picked the original one and rebooted. Everything works perfectly now. Re: [newbie] VMWare 3
Thanks to all who suggested fixes for my problem. There were some bios settings that were wrong by default and I had to change the cdrom device from /mnt/cdrom to /mnt/cdrom1 to get it to work. Now all I need to figure out is how to get my network connection going. It has installed the network card drivers and I have configured the network settings in config, but still won't install my cable software through my lan. Previously I have had to only install vmnet 0 and none of the others to get it to work. I have done that this time and it still won't work. Any ideas there? [newbie] system slow
All, I recently used the ximian install script to update to gnome 1.4. Prior to this I had used red carpet to update the system but owing to a few problems ended up using the script instead. After using the script, the system started to work very slowly (click netscape button, hard drive light flickers, goes out, flickers, goes out and about 20 seconds later starts). It has never been this slow before. Owing to this, I had to reinstall LM 8.0 (I am not yet a competent troubleshooter!) and ever since doing this my system has been running the same. I repartitioned the hard drives, formatted, etc. There should be nothing left to screw things up. I had really just started to ditch M$ too, and now my LM system is running so slow it is frustrating. Even a terminal takes 20 seconds to open. I have a 40gig HD and a P4 1.6 so it is not a slug. Any suggestions? Thanks, Wayne __ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Re: [newbie] HELP... please
Hi, Sounds like PPP is the problem, I think you need root privileges to run ppp so it terminates. Way around this is to set the 'Setuid' bit so anyone who runs it , runs it with root privs. Check these files: /usr/bin/kppp /usr/sbin/pppd then as root do the following: do a ls -l to find the permissions, you should get: -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root on both files, notice the 's' if its not set to s then do a chmod u+s [filename] to both files make sure root is owner and group if not do: chown root root [filename] try this, if it doesnt cure it dont despair as there are a few more things which might need checking ;-) Regards Sard. Re: [newbie] Command execution
Barry, in command line terms the . is the functional equivalent of "this directory". The / means the root or main directory off of that indicated. So in effect the ./means the root of the current directory. IN simple terms, it means the directory you are in! The reason you do this is because the program you are executing is not identified as being in the path so you have to rely on your command line arguments to tell the computer where the program you are executing resides. I am running MDK7.0 on an Athlon 550 with the same kernel version that came with the distro. Any help would be appreciated. Re: [newbie] Down with LILO!
Alan, thanks for the tip though I found a much easier way to do this. For anyone else who needs to change their lilo config., either boot into KDE or open a terminal window and as su type "klilo". It is a GUI configuration tool for lilo and is VERY easy to use. You can change the option there to boot from floppy, MBR or root partition. I did this, installed my boot manager software and voila, worked like a charm. Kirk, be careful with boot magic. Re: [newbie] Installation/Cylinder 1024/and/Boot Magic
b/web, I will tell you how I set up my machine and hopefully this will help. I tried setting up a small partition for the /boot information, a partition for wind'ohs, and one for linux. As my /home directory is on another drive this proved to be somewhat confusing. In the end, what I did was this: I split my primary hard drive in two, straight down the middle. I formatted the second partition and run the windows install, having this as my c: drive. I then installed linux, formatted the other partition and my other linux partitions using disk drake. The I installed linux. When LILO installed it picked up windows and linux first time. I have not had a problem since. Hope this helps. Wayne
Re: [newbie] Installation/Cylinder 1024/and/Boot Magic
b/web, I used the dos fdisk to split the disk originally. Then I used a standard format program to format the drive. It would be good if diskdrake was available for general use but I don't think you can run it outside of a linux install. After Windows was installed I ran the setup for linux and used diskdrake to format the remaining drives and allocate the drive for /home etc. I reinstalled windows from scratch, so that doesn't really fix your problem though, unless you have a burner or zip drive??? My swap partition is on a different drive to my linux partition so this wasn't really a problem for me but the best way to go for you would be to allocate some of your unformated partition to linux swap during the diskdrake step of the install. That is (you have a 17gig HD?) split it in two using fdisk, format the second partition, install windows, then run linux setup, use disk drake to split off another 250MB of what remains as swap and allocate the rest to linux. DD will format your linux drive and swap for you during the install, and set all other parameters based on the drives usage. LILO will still pick up your windows drive when it installs, and will give you this option once you install. Let me know how you go. Wayne

Toni, I am no expert but I will tell you that unless you are willing to learn at least a bit of how Linux works then you really shouldn't be using it. First of all, you will drive yourself insane, second of all, it does not run like Wind'ohs. YOu will HAVE to learn about Linux file systems and the like, how to run programs, and how to install them. If you don't learn these basic things you will be pulling your hair out. I can almost guarantee you that the problems you are having with the install is because you don't quite understand the way the bootloader works or the configuration of your machine. YOu may be getting 0101010 or LI appearing on the screen at reboot. To know how to fix these, you need to know a bit about how Linux works. My recommendation would be to take the time to learn because it will pay off in the end. Wayne

WHen I go into the COntrol centre/Colours area it allows me to change them within the window but won't apply the changes to kde in general. When I log in as root through, my colour scheme changes and stays chage. Log back in as user...same old colours. Any suggestions? Wayne Wayne Petherick Criminology Department Bond University
RE: [newbie] ata66
I too have an ata 66 drive but did some research on using this under linux. MOst of the places I visited said that the patch for ata66 requires some knowledge of kernel and configuration and would reuiqre same. If you haven't fiddled with your kernel, chances are, it won't work. Wayne Wayne Petherick Criminology Department Bond University
Re: [newbie] Disableing PNP IN BIOS
Matthew, if you are talking about disabling PnP for the instal, don't be overly concerned with it I think. I know all of the documentation says you have to do it, but I didn't and had no troubles detecting all of my hardware (including SB Live and GeForce video card). Wayne On Sat, 11 Mar 2000, you wrote: Matthew Loschmann wrote: What is PNP os and how do I get there. I am a NEWBIE, everybody starts somewhere. Depends on your BIOS (BasicInputOutputSystem). This is what ultimately controls your hardware. PNP is Plug 'n Play which is exactly that "plug it in and it's ready to go". This is really only true for Windos. When your computer boots, you'll probably see a logo for your BIOS manufacturer (Such as Award or American Megatrends) and maybe something that says "hit this key to enter setup". You only have about 2 seconds to do it, so be quick. Mine is del and my mom's Compaq is F10. Hope this helps. -Josh At 12:18 AM 3/9/00 +0100, you wrote: pnp os - - Original Message - From: Matthew Loschmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2000 3:12 AM Subject: [newbie] Disableing PNP IN BIOS I now know how to enter bios even though there is no prompt but I could not find this PnP setting everbody is talking about. [newbie] koffice
I have a koffice rpm on my contribs cd that came with mdk 7.0. It is only 3MBin size. Is this likely to be a part of it or just a very basic WP programming? I am trying to install it but it says I need some libraries and don't know which I need to install or where to get them. Wayne Wayne Petherick Criminology Department Bond University
Re: [newbie] Colour scheme in KDE
Sure did, nothing happens. As root, I can do whatever I want with the colour scheme. As user, I have no hope of changing anything. I can however, change the themes. Re: [Fwd: Re: [Re: [[newbie] Swap space 128 Mb?]]]
Mike, I have said it before and I will say it again. The more I use Linux, the more I dread going back to Windoze. UNfortunately I have a Windows printer (GUI) and it WILL NOT work under Linux. I have thought about gewtting VMWare but cannot afford to buy the license for version 2 which I need because of my video card. ALso, I am still a bit of a gamer and I need Windows for this. I also have a Windows TV tuner (box) for my Asus GeForce. Any one know of a way I can get this running under the Penguin? Next time you see such a request for assistance, just pass it on!! Isn't Linux GREAT??? [newbie] floppy disk problems
All, I am having problems with my floppy disk and was wondering whether anyone had encountered this previously or whether anyone knew of a fix for it. WHen I try to access my floppy under a console window using a cd command I get the following error: [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# cd floppy bash: cd: floppy: Input/output error [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# Then, if I try to format the FD I get the following: [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# fdformat /dev/fd0H1440 Double-sided, 80 tracks, 18 sec/track. Total capacity 1440 kB. Formatting ... ioctl(FDFMTBEG): No such device [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# I have used the drive about one hour ago and it worked fine. Re: [newbie] Ram Problems
Pendragon, I have similar problems. As yet, I do not have an answer. HOwever, Linux does seem to report an unusally high amount of memory for my system in other areas. I am just wondering if it uses the 64 area for something else. Wayne
[newbie] Accessing Windows Drives
I am learning more and more that I can do just as much if not 100 times more with Linux than Windoze. One problem I have not been able to overcome though is the ability to access the network here at Uni. There are some really good files on the server and on th PC's connected to it, and I cannot figure out how to access these yet. I have tried to follow the somewhat obscure directions given for samba but have had no luck to date. Does anyone know how I can access the network? I found a utility inder kde that was basically a network tool allowing you to map network drives, but cannot remember the name of it or where it is. Does anyone know how this can be done? Wayne
[newbie] kde 2.0
Someone asked about kde 2. I have done some searching and it is under heacy development so it won't be available for some time. Watch the skies... And just to wet your appetite... Wayne kde2.jpg
Re: [newbie] telnet
Have a look at these files: /etc/hosts.allow /etc/hosts.deny They are probably configured to deny access to everyone except localhost. To change this, read the man page on hosts.allow by enterning the following command at a shell prompt... man hosts.allow Then edit the host access files (as root) and grant access as you see fit.
