[newbie] sound in mdk 10

2004-03-30 Thread Wayne Petherick

All,

I have finally got mdk 10 working on my Asus M6 laptop, but
frustratingly am missing the sound. Can anyone tell me how I might be able to
get around this? Mdk picks it up as a Intel Corp ICH4 845 G/GL Chipset AC97.
It is the only aspect (apaer from my soft modem) that I cant get to
work.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Wayne

Stevie,
I wish! It doesn't exist at all, in fact the arts sound server crashes on
startup. It only really gives me two options for the sound card. I am
going to reinstall and try again today.

Hi,

I had the same sort of problem with my Vaio...

Let me guess - XMMS won't play, KDE crashes on startup, Mplayer is flakey?

Check your sound driver in DrakConf (go to Hardware and configure the sound
driver from there). I noticed that the sound driver that Mandrake was using
was different to the one I had used to MDK9.0... I picked the original one
and rebooted. Everything works perfectly now.

(I also screwed about with sound other things, but it's likely was I barking
up the wrong tree).

Stevie :)

Re: [newbie] VMWare 3

2002-03-29 Thread Wayne Petherick

Thanks to all who suggested fixes for my problem.
There were some bios settings that were wrong by
default and I had to change the cdrom device from
/mnt/cdrom to /mnt/cdrom1 to get it to work. Now all
I need to figure out is how to get my network
connection going. It has installed the network card
drivers and I have configured the network settings in
config, but still won't install my cable software
through my lan. Previously I have had to only install
vmnet 0 and none of the others to get it to work. I
have done that this time and it still won't work. Any
ideas there?

Thanks,

Wayne

It does allow you to try and rewrite the softare for

supported by the development team. Is anyone else out
there using VMWare 3, and does it work OK? There are

be back to a windoze install.

[newbie] system slow

2002-01-27 Thread Wayne Petherick

All,
I recently used the ximian install script to update to
gnome 1.4. Prior to this I had used red carpet to
update the system but owing to a few problems ended up
using the script instead. After using the script, the
system started to work very slowly (click netscape
button, hard drive light flickers, goes out, flickers,
goes out and about 20 seconds later starts). It has
never been this slow before.
Owing to this, I had to reinstall LM 8.0 (I am not yet
a competent troubleshooter!) and ever since doing this
my system has been running the same. I repartitioned
the hard drives, formatted, etc. There should be
nothing left to screw things up. I had really just
started to ditch M$ too, and now my LM system is
running so slow it is frustrating. Even a terminal
takes 20 seconds to open. I have a 40gig HD and a P4
1.6 so it is not a slug. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Wayne

[newbie] Can't upgrade Mandrake with the Single Network Firewall.

2001-11-13 Thread Wayne Bornall

Hi,

I wanted to install the Single Network Firewall on Mandrake 8.1, but it
doesn't upgrade, it replaces Mandrake 8.1 with Mandrake 7.1 and the
firewall. I've noticed this after ending an incomplete install. The install
is incomplete because I couldn't choose my adapter because it wasn't listed.
I've chosen to skip that step but the screen keeps coming back again. I
can't just click on ok. I chose to manually go further with the install, but
this din't help.

How can I dissolve this?

[newbie] RPM Version 3 / 4 problem

I just get an error message stating words to this effect.
Fun part is, I cant install the version 4 RPM as its packed with 4! (Or so
it seems) Anyone else come across this and solved it?
Dont know wether to uninstall this and get a tarball, any ideas please?
TIA

Re: [newbie] HELP... please

2001-03-24 Thread Wayne

Hi,
Sounds like PPP is the problem, I think you need root privileges to run
ppp so it terminates. Way around this is to set the 'Setuid' bit so anyone
who runs it , runs it with root privs.
Check these files:
/usr/bin/kppp
/usr/sbin/pppd
then as root do the following:
do a ls -l to find the permissions, you should get:
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root
on both files, notice the 's'
if its not set to s then do a
chmod u+s [filename] to both files
make sure root is owner and group if not do:
chown root root [filename]

try this, if it doesnt cure it dont despair as there are a few more things
which might need checking ;-)

Regards

Sard.

L8000 series with an 8MB S3 Savage MX/VX video card. I cannot get 7.2 to
work with my video card even though it installs fine, but does die at the
install and configuration of XFree. Every resolution I try comes back with
a "this resolution is not supported by your chipset". I have tried all
combinations of resolutions and card. It still does not work even though I
use the S3 Savage video driver.

I would REALLY appreciate any advice anyone could give.

Thanks,

[newbie] Laptop woes

I would REALLY like to install LM MDK 7.2 on my laptop but I got to the
installation of XFREE and hit some problems. When I tried to set my

colour depth I had chosen was not supported by my chipset. I run windows at
1024x768 at 16bit colour, but trying to set 7.2 to that ended in error
messages. I tried all resolutions and all colour depth combinations, but
now luck. If anyone cold help me I would really appreciate it as 7.2 is the
release I have been waiting for to put on my laptop. I have an ASUS L8400,

Mandrake Sofware suggested in January or February of this year to use a later

[newbie] Changing partition type

I recently purchased Corel WPO2K and think it is great. It comes with the

partition magic 5 and so changing the partition is easy. Last time I did
this without telling Linux it failed to boot owing to an unrecognised
partition or something similar and would like to know if I need to change
the type in my fstab so it will boot correctly if I change my 3GB to ext2

Re: [newbie] Command execution

2000-06-02 Thread Wayne Petherick

Barry,
in command line terms the . is the functional equivalent of "this
directory". The / means the root or main directory off of that
indicated. So in effect the ./means the root of the current
directory. IN simple terms, it means the directory you are in! The
reason you do this is because the program you are executing is not
identified as being in the path so you have to rely on your command line
arguments to tell the computer where the program you are executing
resides.

Alan,
thanks for the tip though I found a much easier way to do this. For anyone
else who needs to change their lilo config., either boot into KDE or open a
terminal window and as su type "klilo". It is a GUI configuration tool for
lilo and is VERY easy to use. You can change the option there to boot from
floppy, MBR or root partition. I did this, installed my boot manager
software and voila, worked like a charm.

Waynein /etc/lilo.conf's first line, add the partition
number that you want lilo to install on, to the end of the
device specified (say it says boot=/dev/hda then change it to
boot=/dev/sda1 or whatever the actual partition number is).
Save the file, and as root, type /sbin/lilo and you're done.

this

be careful with boot magic. I used it recently, removed one of the partitions

b/web,
I will tell you how I set up my machine and hopefully this will help. I tried
setting up a small partition for the /boot information, a partition for
wind'ohs, and one for linux. As my /home directory is on another drive
this proved to be somewhat confusing. In the end, what I did was this:
I split my primary hard drive in two, straight down the middle. I formatted
the second partition and run the windows install, having this as my c: drive.
I then installed linux, formatted the other partition and my other linux
partitions using disk drake. The I installed linux. When LILO installed it
picked up windows and linux first time. I have not had a problem since.

Hope this helps.

Wayne

Re: [newbie] Installation/Cylinder 1024/and/Boot Magic

2000-04-18 Thread Wayne Petherick

b/web,
I used the dos fdisk to split the disk originally. Then I used a standard
format program to format the drive. It would be good if diskdrake was
available for general use but I don't think you can run it outside of a linux
install.
After Windows was installed I ran the setup for linux and used diskdrake to
format the remaining drives and allocate the drive for /home etc. I
reinstalled windows from scratch, so that doesn't really fix your problem
though, unless you have a burner or zip drive???
My swap partition is on a different drive to my linux partition so this wasn't
really a problem for me but the best way to go for you would be to allocate
some of your unformated partition to linux swap during the diskdrake step of
the install. That is (you have a 17gig HD?) split it in two using fdisk,
format the second partition, install windows, then run linux setup, use disk
drake to split off another 250MB of what remains as swap and allocate the rest
to linux. DD will format your linux drive and swap for you during the install,
and set all other parameters based on the drives usage. LILO will still pick
up your windows drive when it installs, and will give you this option once you
install.

Let me know how you go.

Toni,
I am no expert but I will tell you that unless you are willing to learn at
least a bit of how Linux works then you really shouldn't be using it. First of
all, you will drive yourself insane, second of all, it does not run like
Wind'ohs. YOu will HAVE to learn about Linux file systems and the like, how to
run programs, and how to install them. If you don't learn these basic things
you will be pulling your hair out. I can almost guarantee you that the
problems you are having with the install is because you don't quite understand
the way the bootloader works or the configuration of your machine. YOu may be
getting 0101010 or LI appearing on the screen at reboot. To know how to fix
these, you need to know a bit about how Linux works. My recommendation would
be to take the time to learn because it will pay off in the end.

Get Your Private, Free Email at
http://www.hotmail.comFirst,
congratulations!  Mandrake - Linux is a great distribution.
Second, you don't install on windows 98; you could repartition
your hard drive and dual boot both operating systems separately however.

Third, if you've never worked with Linux or Unix, I would suggest that
you pick up a couple of books to get started; I like 'Linux for dummies'
from idg press.  It covers some of the basics, like exactly how to set up
your hard drive, installation and setting up an internet connection.
When you're ready for some more in-depth stuff, O'Reilly puts out some
great books on just about any topic (just head down to your local Barnes
Noble), and finally, I've got a copy of 'Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed'
(though some of the features will vary from Mandrake) and it gives a
general overview of most topics.

Good luck!

[newbie] KDE intrusion on Gnome

All,
I use Gnome with sawmill as my preferred choice. When I use some kde programs

Did you use the 4000 series driver or does it need to be done a different way.

When I try to do a floppy format using KFloppy I get the error message "cannot

lines. What does this mean? It is not busy, there are no other programs
accessing the floppy and a brand new disk is in there. Also, when I try to
write programs to it (less than 1.44MB) I get another message that says similar
things. Any help?

Michael,
Yes, the quotation marks are around the 128M and i can't think for the life of

If i do it manually, it will boot, if it try to boot automatically from
lilo.conf it will not work with my 128M.
It did this previously with 128M but for some reason with this install will not.
I am really confused at this point why this happens.

Re: [newbie] Drive Full?!? (please respond this time)

2000-03-14 Thread Wayne Petherick

If you are using nortons it will dump your infrequently used
files at the end which will give your partioning software the impression
your drive is full. Try either telling it to place all files at the
beginning (or alternatively, none at the end) or remove it and then run
normal defrag which is a little more time consuming. It thinks it
is doing you a favour by doing this but it is a pain in the ass.

You probably have all of your drive partitioned already. (This is always the default if you don't do the partitioning yourself)  Get a non destructive reparation tool (Partition Magic) and try that.

Hey Everyone,
I keep trying to partition my hard drive so I can use Linux, but when I do so, it says that the last cylinder of my drive is full. So it thinks my entire drive is filled up, which it isn't. I have a 27.3 GB Hard Drive which I've maybe used 5 GB of. It's definitely not full! I need help!!! PLEASE!

[newbie] Q re: HDD

2000-03-13 Thread Wayne

I have a question regarding my hard disks. After some trouble trying to cfdisk
my HD this morning, Linux wouldn't work and I had to reinstall it. It has
picked up the hard disk I partitioned to give me 3 gig of space to use for
personal files etc and has mounted it is /home. Does this mean when ever I do
a cd /home this is where it takes me? If not, how do I access this disk to
store files on and install programs on it etc? If this is the case, is my
entire home directory on this 3 gig disk and is it mine to do with as I please?

Wayne

Re: [newbie] Q re: HDD

2000-03-13 Thread Wayne Petherick

Alan,
thanks for the tip. I guess that is what another subscriber was
referring to as allocating X MB for /home, X MB for /usr etc etc...I
didn't know you could do that with Linux.

Also, whilst I have the soapbox, I would just like to say there has been
some flaming going on about people asking questions that might be
provided in the documentation. Some of the docs with Linux are
obscure and written by Linux gurus and therefore hard to read and
understand for us newbies. I am a one time computer
tech from Dos/Windows days and still have trouble understanding much
Linux stuff. I have been using it full time for over a week now and
have come to appreciate the power and versatility of the OS and will make
a total migration to it for everything but games (for obvious
reasons). I love it, it works well , and on the odd occasion it
does hang, just type xkill and away you go. Not like
Wind'ohs..
Any more advanced users out there, just tolerate my spupidity and other
stupidity like it for a while and eventually we will be teaching the new
users to the list what you have taught us.

Alan,
thanks again so much for the tip. It answered my Q exactly.

  Kyle,
at a guess I would say you are running a Windoze box with probably the
latest version of Norton's on it. WOuld I be correct? If so, the
problems you are having is that Nortons will write infrequently used files
to the last part of your hard disk to make the file access quicker. What
you will have to do is either remove NOrton's from your system and then
run a slow windoze defrag, or, find out whiat files these are, then under
your Norton's options tell it to place them first on the disk.

Hope you are using Nortons and I hope this helps.

Depends on your BIOS (BasicInputOutputSystem). This is what ultimately
controls your hardware. PNP is Plug 'n Play which is exactly that "plug
it in and it's ready to go". This is really only true for Windos. When
your computer boots, you'll probably see a logo for your BIOS
manufacturer (Such as Award or American Megatrends) and maybe something
that says "hit this key to enter setup". You only have about 2 seconds
to do it, so be quick. Mine is del and my mom's Compaq is F10.
