You'll then need to enter the entire path to thunderbird. I don't know
where it is installed on your machine, so 'locate thunderbird' might
give you a clue.
Adding the %s will add the e-mail address of the person to whom you are
sending e-mail that is in the link.

Open Source exchange replacement. Then, all you have to do is find a client.
If they already use Outlook, they can continue to use it, or you can find any
open source client that can access Exchange since opengroupware is
essentially a replacement for exchange. Might Try Mozilla. On Linux
Evolution works but I don't know if they make an Evolution client for
Windows.

Also, Treo sync should work with any synchronization client that supports
outlook, whatever other client is used to access exchange.

Note, I haven't set this up and probably wouldn't, there are much easier
replacements that don't have to be totally exchange compatible that will do
all the groupware stuff, but since you specified continuing in a windows
environment and syncing with Palm, you are kind of limiting your choices.

[newbie] Email, Calendar, Scheduling, Address Book, synchronization (without Outlook)

2004-08-17 Thread Thinker
Hello All,
I have a client with 5 machines/users on a peer to peer network. The
only network resource they share is access to the Internet. About an
hour ago, he asked me to help him set up email addresses for the 5
people in the office. He visited a friend that has an exchange server
and all of the employees are using outlook. He asked me if I could set
his office up the same way.

After going over the potential security risks associated with using
Exchange and Outlook, I think I finally have him convinced that
Outlook/Exchange is a bad idea. He is now giving me the opportunity to
come up with more secure alternatives. This is where I need the help.

He wants to be able to open the program or website and schedule a
meeting with the people that he needs to attend. Those people should in
turn receive an email (or whatever notice possible) stating the meeting
has been scheduled, who scheduled it and should be allowed to confirm
that they will be there.

There should be a universal address book that allows you to associate
birthdays and anniversaries with contacts and those birthdays and
anniversaries should show up on the calendar.

They already have PCs or laptops which are either running Windows XP or
Windows 2000. They have a spare machine that I could install Linux on
if need be, but the users will still have to run Windows on their
machines.

If there is a web based solution for all of this, they can get the web
space if needed. The main thing is, he wants to be able to sync all of
this with his Handspring Treo.

I am hoping for a 'lower cost' solution. Lower cost as in a lot closer
to free. Something I could just install on a spare machine and let it
run; or something I could install on a web server.

Any ideas? Is there such an animal?

You are correct. That wouldn't be a solution for me. However - the
person asking the question originally asked for a client that can
be used for both Win 2K and Mandrake. He didn't specify that they
be interactive - though that would be ideal, I imagine. I do know
that Tbird works for both Win and Mdk. Since his ISP doesn't
support IMAP I suppose my suggestion is worthless anyway ;-)

If you use two different mail programms or just two different installtions
of the same email client, your solution would only have the incomming mails
in both programms, it would not help to have a common history of the emails

Mozilla Thunderbird.I'm pretty sure if you leave the mail on the
server (check option to delete from server when it's deleted
locally) you'd have access to it from both. Earthlink (my email
client) is POP but has that IMAP-like option.

If you are going to keep your mail on a local drive, you are kind of in a
tight spot. If you use a FAT32 partition for it, then essentially, your mail
is an open book to anyone with access to the computer cause unix file
permissions don't work on FAT32 and there is not anyway that I know of to
secure FAT32. If you are going to use a Linux filesystem, then you won't
have access to it on the Windows side.

IMAP is the only way that I know of to keep your mail accessible to both
environments and that needs a server so unless you have a machine sitting
around that you can work into an independent mail server, I don't know how
you can arrange to share mail between dual boot machines.

The way I see it, the mail client you use is not really material. It is the
location of the mail itself and the filesystem that is used. Beyond that,
you can use any combination of mail clients that support the same mail
structure, either mbox or maildir. Finding one, like Mozilla, say, that work
the same in both environments is the easy part. Unless I am missing
something and making this more complicated than it actually is.

That's a bit iffy at best.

You COULD, however, experiment to see if you can use Mozilla Thunderbird
and have the local folder pointing to a shared VFAT32 partition; they
should store the data in the same format for both OS's - however, it
would be an experiment.

Postfix must be seeing the mail if it's delivering it to the spool, that's
what Postfix does. Fetchmail wouldn't know where to put the mail, it just
passes it to whoever is listening on port 25, ie. Postfix.

Now that the mail's in /var/spool/mail/kasper, anyone who sets their mail
client to the address of your mail server, and provides your username and
password, will get whatever is in the spool (assuming you installed the
'imap' software package).

Now you can either separate out the mail using Procmail (by From:, or
whatever) to different folders and different users, but it would be a lot
easier to get seperate e-mail addresses from the ISP for each user, then set
up accounts for them on the mail server.

It also covers checking the mail for viruses and spam, but of course you can

Hey Derek.

I tried altering the main.cf file as you suggest on your page but Postfix
doesnt see any mails. Fetchmail gets the messages fine and it delivers the
mail to '/var/spool/mail/kasper'. Where to go from here?

Probably not quite. If the users will be sending mail out and you are on a
dial-up or dynamic IP connection with no DNS MX records, you may have to
setup Postfix to relay mail through the ISP's mail server. An awful lot of
mail servers don't accept smtp traffic from dynamic IP ranges, or if the
server is not the MX of record for the domain. That is assuming that your
ISP is not totally blocking outgoing port 25 traffic, as does Earthlink and
several other ISP's.

The other fix is to have the mail clients relay outgoing mail directly through
the ISP but pop mail from the local server. I prefer just getting Postfix to
relay.

Do you have fetchmail and postfix installed? You should if you chose to add
a mailserver during the install process.

If not,

urpmi postfix fetchmail fetchmailconf imap

or if you want fetchmail as a system service:

urpmi postfix fetchmail-daemon fetchmailconf imap

then create user accounts for all the LAN members.

configure fetchmail by running fetchmailconf, or edit the text yourself if you
wish, it looks something like this:

set postmaster "whatever"
set bouncemail
set no spambounce
set properties ""
set daemon 600

poll pop.whatever.com with proto POP3
user '' there with password '' is 'kasper' here options
nokeep

poll pop.whatever.com with proto POP3
user '' there with password '' is 'lanuser1' here options
nokeep

poll pop.whatever.com with proto POP3
user '' there with password '' is 'lanuser2' here options
nokeep

etc.

See 'man fetchmail' for more options. When the file is saved, either save it to
/etc/fetchmailrc of ~/.fetchmailrc, depending on whether you are funning
fetchmail as a system service or not.

Now set the LAN mail clients to pop the IP of the mailserver, and yer done.

Well, hopefully ;-)

Hmmm, ...Tough one Curt. You seem to be receiving the emails I'm sending to the list,
and I assume the emails from others on the list. If the DNS records were changed for
your ISP's SMTP server, it could take quite a while for some DNS servers to get
updated, and others would/could already be updated. Your family's ISP may not be
updated yet.

Your returned email this morning could have been for the same reason. If I were to
change the IP or DNS records of my email server here, I'd see the same kind of
problems. Of course, it could be for another reason that I haven't thought of. This
seems to be happening more and more these days. I think it's a fact that you forget
things more and more as your head gets more gray hair (?) !

I guess I was wanting to be convinced that there's nothing wrong on my
end, even though it seems obvious.
But if what you say is the case, wouldn't I be getting email sent to,
say this list and tests from my family are being returned to them as
of this morning.
Plus I just got this on a message sent this morning:

Your message has encountered delivery problems
to the following recipient(s):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Delivery failed
550 rejected: cannot route to sender <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Sent:(message data)
Received:550 rejected: cannot route to sender <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Maybe this means I've been removed from the list due to bounces? It's
happened before with this list... one email bounced got me removed.
Thanks for the input.

Because the mail reader is too dumb to do something sensible with
(MIME) multipart types it doesn't recognize. This mail will probably
have the mentioned problem, because I digitally sign my mails which
results in a content-type of multipart-signed with my (textual) reply
as first part and the signature as second one.

The sensible thing to do for the mailer would be to simply try it's
best and treat unknown multipart types like multipart-mixed and simply
display the text/plain content (and put the signature, which is not
text/plain, as an attachment).

Btw, multipart-signed is standartized for over 10 years or so,
i.e. it's not that this is about supporting bleeding-edge stuff.

You're partially right.

Evolution takes as input some sort of HTML format, so you have to
replace spaces used for formatting by " " (no quotes). This is the
reason for
sed -e "s/ /\ /g"

Additionally, you have to make your own HTML end-of-line, so you need:
sed -e "s/$//g"

Finally, Evolution doesn't insert the "--" line to signal the beginning
for script generated signatures. That's the reason for
echo "--"

This way, using your script, I will need to use the two sed pipes in
every line. Nothing wrong with that, but I prefer using them only once
even when my script has to write three times to disk.

Of course there a zillion ways to do this, but writing all that output to
other files is not necessary. For example,

echo "firma o lo que quieras"
date -R
uptime
fortune

does the same thing. The echo "--" I think should be echo "-- " (two
hyphens and a space) and may not even be necessary depending on your MUA;
Sylpheed uses that as a delimiter by default, I think Mozilla too, don't
know Evolution.

Only things that scare me a bit is being left without copyright, EULA
and being forced to pay a yearly subscription.

I just finished with this one.

My final script is:

As you can see is working just fine.

There have been some issues with the Evo generated sigs - so the
resolution to that is to either dig deeper into how it works, or create
your own script OUTSIDE of Evo to do it. I tried mucking around with it

Hi Heather! Nice to see you back on the list. Hope you're doing well.

Using Kmail all you have to do is the following: KMail > Settings > Identity >
Signature > Obtain signature from: Output of command > Specify command: fortune

Works for me. If you aren't using KMail, I can't help, sorry. ;-)

if [ -p /tmp/xmms-info ] ; then
echo "The current tune is $( grep Title: /tmp/xmms-info | awk -F': '

echo "$( fortune /home/todd/sig/mdk )"
echo "Got a great Mandrake-Linux tip bookmarked? Send it to me and I'll

The xmms-info is just to see if xmms is running and if it is it prints the
song title.

You can create your own fortune list by putting the quotes in a file--one
per line, separated by a line with %. Then you run "strfile filename" and
it creates the .dat file for that list. So, when you call fortune, you can
specify the file you want to use. You can also decide to use a percentage
from each set you've got. For example, see all the collections in
/usr/share/games/fortunes. You could say use 80% from politics and 20%
from startrek.

Man fortune is your friend on this one.

You need to set up a mail transfer agent, I'm using Postfix. It's really
easy to set up, you only have to change one or two things in the config
file. Also, anything you want to change regarding Postfix can easily be
changed using Webmin.

I'm running a list using Mailman. The version (I think it was 2.0.8) that
I got with the MD 8.2 download edition was giving me fits, so I downloaded
a newer RPM (version 2.0.11) and it worked like a charm.

Sympa is also on your CDs, but looking at how to set it up gave me a
headache; Mailman was pretty simple and straightforward.

I'm not sure about the security issues in running a mail server, I have
not had any problems yet. The default configurations for the MTAs are
pretty sensible.

Let me know if you decide to go with Mailman and need any help.

[newbie] Email List server

2002-08-02 Thread Aaron Winters

What is involved in setting up a email list
server? I have a LM 8.2 machine that is a web/ftp server and I would like
to start an email discussion list. I do not have anything for mail running and I
don't think I even installed things like sendmail because I had no need for them
and did not want to worry about open ports I am not using so I will have to know
what software to install also. I don't really want to run an email server but I
need the list so help in getting it going and secure is what I am looking
for.
Thanks,

I'm coming in on this late, so this may have been suggested already. But,
what I do is alias roots mail to mine in /etc/alias. Then anything that
would normally go to root, goes to my account.

Hope that helps.

I ended up sending all of root's mail to another local user. Just a

You can set up an alias in /etc/aliases, such as:

root: yourusername

and run "newaliases".

Of course, this will send you all of root's mail.

Just add

MAILTO=

SMTP is the default setup in Mandrake for mail service. Although postfix and
fetchmail will talk to ISP POP3 accounts, I have never seen anyone talking on
the list about setting up a POP3 server. Do you specifically need POP3?

My problem is that once I fix something, I never remember how I did it :(

So, are you running Postfix or some other mailer? Have you verified that
the service is running either through Webmin or the Control Center?

If you are running a firewall, make sure you don't have your mailer
blocked.

Can you send mail to an outside addy using your local account?

Forgive if this message appears twice, but I

I have my IP address configured correctly on the

Re: [newbie] email from command prompt

2002-02-28 Thread Michael

I am trying to understand what you want. This isn't especially clear to me as
another newbie but i guess the question you want answered is can "mail" talk
direct to a SMTP server out of your box. I am probably way out in left feild as
i understand that on a standard setup this is the domain of postfix (or postfix
pretending it is "sendmail"). The question still remains though... can mail
address a SMTP server on the net directly. In my situation i get my mail as POP3
(with fetchmail) and send it as SMTP to my ISP (preconfigured using sendmail).

I agree Gerald's reply doesn't address my understanding of this question either.
More info please Gerald!

Meanwhile Jim, i am off to reread man mail, man mailaddr, man sendmail, all the
*.cf files in /etc/postfix/, and scan the HOWTO's. I am interested in any
replies you get as well.

My interest stems from looking at writing my mail offline (while my partner is
on the phone, which exceeds the time i am usuallly online). I want to post it to
the bowels of my box and have it post on from there from something in my
/etc/ppp/ip-up.local file.

Hotmail uses HTTP, not POP3. I can easily check it using Navigator/Mozilla
or whatever, but I like the convenience of using a program like Outlook
Express instead of a web browser just to check my email.

So I guess a better question is there an email client out there (I played
with Sylpheed a little and I REALLY like it, too bad it doesn't) that
supports the HTTP protocol for checking email?

Thanks,

James

Assuming Hotmail is just another POP3 mail server,
most of the common E-mail clients will fetch your
E-mail from your Hotmail account. For example, I use
a @yahoo.com E-mail account for my mailing lists and I
retrieve them using Sylpheed. I used to use KMail for
the same thing and it worked fine also. You jsut need
to configure the account settings properly in your
EMail client (the POP3 server name, username,
password,etc...).

Let me know if you have any specific questions
concerning setup.

Good luck,

Mel

Dunno about an application to put in that box, but you could run Mail Monitor
from the KMenu>Networking>Mail menu You can dock it into your start bar, and
select icons to display when there is either mail or no mail. If you add it
to your .kde/Autostart folder then it will open up every time you log on.

[newbie] Email notification question

2001-12-07 Thread Dave

Hello everyone.

I have a question regarding email.

I use Kmailand under

Kmail>Settings>Configure>Misc>

Is a box that says>Execute Command Line on New Email

Does anyone have (or know where I can find) a executable that opens some type
of screensaver or soemething that shows up graphically saying I have new
mail??

TIA

Frank:
Every so often, some randomly selected members are removed from the list
for some unknown reason. The only known cure is to resubscribe. (At
least its easier than reinstalling the OS).
