Don't expect everything to work perfectly. If you are new to Linux (as I am for 5 years now), don't mess with betas or RC's (release candidates) but stick to stable, proven releases. Furthermore, Mandrake is always on the *cutting edge* of developement, so even the *stable* releases are buggy or incomplete. That's part of the fun, though. Conclusion : forget about 9.2 until it has been officially released, then wait another month or two while reading this list, take notes on important issues (not the political ones !) and then : download and install, with notes at hand. We can help if you tell us what you mean by 'buggy'. What does not work? What files are being created? What do you mean by slow? If you are running KDE on a 233MHz Pentium, then Yes it will be slow. KDE is similar to Windows XP. You could not run XP on that machine either. On a low end machine you will have a much better experience running a lightweight Window Manager such as :- Icewm - Similar to Win95 WindowManager- Not very Windows like at all. Enlightenment - Good if you like garish themes (not my favourite) Blackbox or Fluxbox - So minimal they confuse Windows users (but my favourite) You will also find there are lightweight applications that work just as well as the more 'bloated' applications but faster. Experiment. There are thousand of apps on your CDs. If you ask we can recommend apps to you. -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Why I ask is that patching and recompiling the kernel ain't for the feint of heart, mate - unless you're ready and willing to cause yourself a few headaches here and there. Patching the kernel doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to optimise your system or get better performance out of it - truly. If you're feeling that system speed is lagging and strange things are happening, you might want to start out with looking at the system overall and seeing where and what you can tweak and tune in order to get rid of those zero byte files (are they core dumps perchance?) as well as streamlining some things and tweaking your hard drive settings to get more bang for your buck... -- Thu Mar 27 09:10:00 EST 2003 09:10:00 up 5 days, 19:57, 3 users, load average: 1.04, 1.15, 1.20 -- |____ | kuhn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ |"| | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;"""/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' " " | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- linux user:267497 * MDK 9.1 * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting machine no:194239 * RH 7.3 * Sales - Service - Support - Tutor -- ** This messages was composed on a 100% Microsoft free computer ** The man who understands one woman is qualified to understand pretty well everything. -- Yeats Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Richard, I am a very happy Mandrake user and though 9.0 had its problems (especially eg supermount etc.), I never had the problems you describe. 9.1 has now been released, I suggest you upgrade/reinstall (download available on all the major mirrors) immediately. See if this fixes your problems and if not then we will require more information to be able to asist in more depth. Regards, Jason Greenwood Richard B. Thibaudeau wrote: Dear Sir / Madam. Have you tried a different keyboard? That would be the first step in ruling out a hardware problem with the keyboard. If the borrowed keyboard works, get a new keyboard and don't worry about it. If it does the same thing, it could still be a hardware problem with your motherboard. Hi all, I was given a new computer at work and they allowed me to put linux on it (they don't care what i use as long as the work gets done). They were even nice enough to get starsuite for me. :-) (The computer guy said that starsuite is selling like crazy - one of the most popular programs at the moment.) Anyhow, I put mandrake 8.2 on it and it works fine except for one or two things. The major problem is that the keyboard repeat rate is totally f**ked up. Typing quickly (normal speed for someone used to typing) causes a large number or double or triple letters, like `mman kbbdrate'. It does not seem to be affected by changing kbdrate or by changing the settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Changing those settings works for the regular repeat, but does nothing to prevent the annoying semi-random repeats. I found something on google about commenting out some code in some file in (from memory, I am not at work nor on the net as I write this) /usr/src/?/arch/i386/??. Anyhow, I commented out the relevant section in whatever file that was, but the keyboard still repeats. Does that file (whose name I cannot remember) affect anything, or would I have to recompile the kernel or something first? Any ideas? Could it be a hardware problem? I have found that it is less likely to happen if I pound the keys (imaging typing on an old, non-electric typewriter). Needless to say, that solution is almost as bad as the problem. tia -- Chris Spackman gpg: 9B6B 860E 7C06 787F 366F 5D3E 7152 DCB2 FC51 51B9 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Help Please peoples?? is this a reiser problem???
Hi ,, I mentioned this last night, but noone really knew so I am asking again in the hope that someone can give me a tip here... I have a mandrake 7.2 system, and when I rebooted it last night, all sorts of things went wrong... First, GDM stopped workin, and I had to use failsafe to kill that at boot (along with all the other non essential servers...) Now, if I boot to any kernel, I either get blank screen, or i get the default linux console screen, with the penguin, and it asks for my login, which if I type it just goes to the next line and doesn't prompt for a password... I have alot of html and perl work on this machine that I hadn't yet backed up, so its imperrative that I get this distro, functional,,, I am of the feelin that its been some sort of File system corruption (all partitions are reiser except /boot) but from looking at the failsafe logs, there isn't much wrong with anything.. how I go about using the rescue disk to mount the hard drive and/or possibly to fsck it??? what is the command for fsck for reiserfs?? does anyone have any ideas?? also, why do I get the blank screen at login... (or a prompt that doesnt' ask for you passwd???) rgds Frank Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Michael, did you install 8.0 before or after you bought the Voodoo? 8.0 finds the Voodoo 3000 (is it AGP or PCI, btw?), and will automagically install 3d acceleration. You did pick XFree 4.03 and hardware accel. when it asked, right? If you added the Voodoo after your 8.0 installation, you can still add acceleration. Click the Mandrake Control Center icon from your desktop, then pick "display", pick your settings, and use expert mode. That -should- set your card up. I can't remember the exact program for doing this... But what you could do (if you find a better answer) is to run your installation CD's again. This time choose UPGRADE. You don't have to install any programs but eventually, it walks you through the Video setup part. Re: [newbie] HELP... please
Hi, Sounds like PPP is the problem, I think you need root privileges to run ppp so it terminates. Way around this is to set the 'Setuid' bit so anyone who runs it , runs it with root privs. Check these files: /usr/bin/kppp /usr/sbin/pppd then as root do the following: do a ls -l to find the permissions, you should get: -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root on both files, notice the 's' if its not set to s then do a chmod u+s [filename] to both files make sure root is owner and group if not do: chown root root [filename] try this, if it doesnt cure it dont despair as there are a few more things which might need checking ;-) Regards Sard. try setting the modem timeout in Kppp setup. It needs to be above 60 seconds or the link might drop before you completely connect. There's a program on your system that will help you backup files from your system to the tape drive. It's called Taper. If your tape drive is the only scsi device on your system you would start the program like this. taper -T st0 Once you issue the command in a terminal window the program starts, finds your device and then you can configure everything else from there get your back running. -- Mark ### ## ...it's not a bug, it's a feature ## Registered Linux User # 182496 ## # On Fri, 22 Dec 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] spake passionately saying: > Hello,I have a scsi tape drive and was wondering how I can tar and gunzip files to >it.I am not sure of the commands or what the drive is considered.I dont see an entry >for st0,where should I look? I have the same modem in my motherboard, but this is unfortunately a winmodem. Some people in Taiwan made a linux driver module for this card, it is at: http://www.pcchips.com Unfortunately I couldnt get the drivers to work neither with the soundcard nor the modem, so I went out and bought an external modem and a cheap Yamaha soundcard. Hoping that the device configuration problem I hadwith my slackware would have been corrected, and the manufacturers helped out in supplying all necessary tools to support this wonderful operating system. Before I get carried away, my problem is this. 1. I can't seem to be able to configure my sound card to work with my motherboard(System Specifications at end), I am using a CM8738 Sound Card, which, ChenLi Tien, designed the driver that should work with the Linux Box, but I have compiled the kernel and reinstalled, yet, everything is the same, a probe with cat /dev/sndstart, produces the error "No such directory", which from the documentation states that the device is not in the kernel or is not installed. You might want to try "cat /dev/sndstat" and not sndstart. > 1. Re: [newbie] Help Please
Hi Ronald! Ignorance is ok, we all start somewhere :) If you are using a floppy to boot this please check which image you used. I think you need to change your boot disk image, sounds like you are attempting to do a network install. As for the numbers: NFS stands for Network File Server (Usually a Unix / Linux server) The numbers a normal disk based install would ask for are DNS (Domain Name Server) an IP Address for the box netmask (255.255.255.0) probably gateway (your router) ipconfig /all would give your these three but not an NFS number Ronald Brown wrote: > Hello Group, > > I'm a newbie, so forgive my ignorance. Sam, Can you get a copy of DOS on a floppy? If so then boot the floppy and at the A:/ prompt, type in 'fdisk' . When you get into this program you are presented with a number of options... 1,2,3,4, choose option 4 and look at what partitions you have on your hard drive (Win98 is considered a non-Dos partition). You can usually figure out which partition is Win 98 by the size or it should just be on the C: drive. see if it's active, if not go back to the first screen listing options. >From here you can set the active partitions and also delete any partitions you don't want. - Original Message - From: "Sam Junge" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, February 27, 1998 4:44 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error > I never backed up my hd, so i have like 350 mp3's and a bunch of other > irreplaceable stuf. . > - Original Message - > From: "Eunice Thompson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2000 5:15 AM > Subject: Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error > > > > Sam,I'm surprised you have't said, 'the hell with it!" and just reformat > > your hard drive. Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error
Sam,I'm surprised you have't said, 'the hell with it!" and just reformat your hard drive. Start out with a clean slate, install Win 98, make a boot floppy for Partition Magic (BTW, don't use BOOT MAGIC); make another primary partition for Linux and install Linux. You may want to boot to Linux using a boot floppy (you can make one of these during the installation, just before you configure LILO). Also you don't have to install LILO, when asked if you want to use LILO just say NO. Then you'll be able to boot Win98 by default and if you want Linux ,just boot with the floppy. GOOD LUCK - Original Message - From: Sam Junge To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 1998 10:06 AM Subject: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error As I've mentioned before, I've been having problems with PartitionMagic. I installed PartitionMagic, then mandrake linux 7, then decided to delete the linux partition. No longer does my computer load lilo, or list linux as a partition, but PartitionMagic still loads as a dos program when the computer starts up and tells me "That linux partition could not be deleted. The operating system partition being deleted was not found." The only option it gives me is to click ok, which shuts down the computer and repeats the process. I tried going to my other computer and doing a sys a:, and also putting fdisk from my other computer onto the disk. I then put this disk in the computer that wouldn't load windows, and it gave me an a prompt. I tried typing fdisk /mbr, but it didn't make a difference for the next time i booted the computer. What can I do? Please give me a detailed enough anwser because I've tried to solve this problem numerous ways.
Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error
I had a similar problem once, Windows 98 would not stop auto-loading a DOS program for partitioning my HD on startup! I copied my autoexec.bat and config.sys from the Windows partition to another comz where I removed the command to load the proggy! I then copied the new one over the old and I booted into Windows on the first attempt! Hope this simple solution helps! -Juien - Original Message - From: Sam Junge To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 1998 1:06 PM Subject: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error As I've mentioned before, I've been having problems with PartitionMagic. Try booting from your floppy and checking the autoexec.bat file on the c: drive, see if there are modifications which start partitionmagic's batch file of partition changes.
[newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error
As I've mentioned before, I've been having problems with PartitionMagic.
Re: [newbie] Help please Scsi & IDE duo
Here is a ghetto way of doing of it, but it will work. Just hookup the SCSI drive while installing the OS and then add the IDE after setting up the machine. I'm sure there is a better way of doing it but this should work.
