 Yes.

Install FlashPlayer via urpmi or RPMDRAKE as root.

You will have your dependances figured out for you. by compiling it you are
missing a crucial file.

I had this problem a little while ago, and it was solved when I used urpmi and
it found the extra rpm I needed.

I wish I knew the name of that file

javavm usage and the likes - along with the ability to
create/modify/comile java applets for website creation - but overall, if

Hi Andrei,
I don't know a lot about Texstar, but he is very highly respected in Linux circles,
and he produces a lot of really cool software packages. You can check out his stuff
for Mdk 9.0 here:
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.0/

You can learn more about Texstar at this site:
http://www.pclinuxonline.com/index.php

Others on this list can probably tell you much more than I can about Tex. I'm new to
the world of Linux. :-)

All the best to you!

PS. If you install Tex's rpms, you may get a warning about bad signatures or some
such. It is safe to ignore the warning for Tex's packages. This I have been told. I
have installed several of Tex's rpms with good results.

Greetings, I can recall someone on the list looking for an rpm package to
install Flash. Well, I see that Tex has released an rpm of the latest
6.0beta plugin for Mozilla 1.1.

It would be available for Galeon to use w/this rpm install too I believe.

I use the Flash 6.0beta and it's working great.w/Opera too!

It can be had here:

RPMs for flash are available from Mandrake Club, but membership is required.
You can find a binary installer at
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English
The instructions are quite straightforward.
For Mozilla just make sure you copy the plugin and java class file into
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.1/plugins
Galeon will work if Mozilla works.
For Konqueror open KDEControlCentre>WebBrowsing>Netscapeplugins and make sure
that /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1 is one of the paths specified, then 'Scan for new
plugins'

Step-by-Step (this is the way I do it, you may modify if you wish)

Download the gzipped file (flash_linux.tar.gz or whatever this version
happens to be named)
At this point I usually copy the tarball to /usr
As root, I Cd to the directory the file is in (in my case #cd /usr) and
unpack it with the command:

#tar -xzvf flash_linux.tar.gz
the command is:
 tar -xzvf the_flashplayer_tarfile_name

A directory /usr/flash_linux will be created. Inside that directory will be
two files --libflashplayer.so & ShockwaveFlash.class

Copy these two files to your /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory (and to your
/usr/lib/netscape/plugins directory if you use Netscape)

Now, when you open Mozilla, the Help>about Plug-ins list will have Shockwave
Flash. It should work for you (always has for me)

Thats the easier (and my preferred) way of doing it, but you can also

Alexa, the file is in a tar zip format. you can upackage it by going into a console and navigating to the folder that the installer is in. Do a change directory command like: cd Documents . Then at the prompt type  "tar -xvzf filename.tar.gz" and hit enter. The file will unzip and place its pacakages. Then you should install as per the instructions in the readme file or on the web page. Hi Alexa, great that your on-line w/Linux! Yes, Flash will work on Linux. You can get
an rpm to install and instructions on how to do it here:
http://mdkxp.by-a.com/htm/tutorials/flashrpm.php

There's lots of other great stuff at DOlson's site too.
Hope this helps some.

All the best to you. Mandrake rocks!

Any productive discussion is fine with me whatever the topic. Your problem is
somewhat different then mine. The whole browser freezes? Mine will load the
site just not the flash portion. I guess this is pretty mysterious bcause
nobody seems to know what the solution is. Does KDE have a list of any kind
for Konqueror?

The compact flash media is a different beast. It's just a storage device

It lets you see 90% more ads than the Internet surfer without the

Oh, there is some good flash out there that does animation and some

obnoxious flash ads and splash pages (a "really cool" animation you

Some sites just are not bothering to visit. That site is covered in microsoft
javascript. Even with Flash 6 (Codeweavers crossover ) it does not work.

Opera (Identified as IE5) - Fails to detect Flash 6 is loaded. If I press the
button to 'Enter Anyway' a blank window pops up.

Mozilla - Same, no detection of Flash6, blank window if I try to enter.

Konqueror - Does not detect Flash6, but the javascript to enter the site does
work and a window pops up saying 'URL not found'

Internet Explorer 5 (Under Crossover Office) - Demands to download javascript
updates. There ain't no way I am letting Microsoft put stuff on my computer
so I gave up.

   Yep, doesn't work.  I've resisted Flash6 since I can't get my head
around where it wants to install, and I have some contempt for tainting
my system with their binary junk anyhow. Fortunately I only place their
crap on my system to avoid gettin endless pop-up pages askin me if I
want to d/l Flash. Same with Sun's java. (j2re-1.4.0_01-1mdk)

 FWIW, Flash can cause nasty crashes with KDE 3.1rc2 and still in rc3. I
doubt it'll be solved with 3.1 final. As Civileme said, 'the more
closed source proprietary secret stuff you inject into your first class
Linux OS, the less you own it' (paraprhrase)

Re: [newbie] flash in Konqueror

2002-11-12 Thread Noah Hicks
Well I'm not having a problem with the flash version. The problem for me
seems to be that Konqueror is not using the plugin. I am pretty sure I did
what I was supposed to: untared the files, put them in ~/.mozilla/plugins,
put that dir in the Konq settings, scanned for new pugins, and still no joy.
What's up? Does it matter where I put the files? As long as I tell
Konqueror where to scan it should pick up the libflashplayer.so and
ShockwaveFlash.class file shouldn't it work? As far as I can tell Konqueror
can't read any part of a website that has a *.swf.
Thanks for pointers

Interesting. I tried the site, and the first one I tried said:

This site requires the Macromedia Flash 6 plug-in. This is a free
plug-in which allows you to view animated content on the web.
The download is quick and it is easy to install.

Any ideas? Could this be because I'm using 9.0 Beta 4?

   Here's how I do it. I don't use the .netscape dir. d/l and extract
the flash files, libflashplayer.so* andShockwaveFlash.class to
/home//.mozilla/plugins. You may need to create a plugins dir if
it doesn't exist. If you have flash in Mozilla, you've already done
something like this.  So.

In Control Center | Web browsing | Plugins, edit the top line to
read $HOME/.mozilla/plugins Click on "Enable plugins globally",
and then click on "Scan for new plugins". I leave "Scan for plugins at
KDE startup" unchecked. Done, go to Google and search 'flash test'.
You can then go to several sites to test your new flash with Konqueror.

If y'all have already installed the flash files in
../.netscape/plugins, omit my edit above, leave the line reading
$HOME/.netscape/plugins on top, then do the rest. I don't know why
Mandrake still configures to use the .netscape dir, since NutScrape
(thankfully) has been gone for a long time now.

Didn't we already cover this issue yesterday - or early this morning?

Open up KONQUEROR, choose SETTINGS, then CONFIGURE KONQUEROR, then
scroll down the left side to the BOTTOM where you find NETSCAPE PLUGINS,
click that icon, then in the right side, you get an option to SCAN FOR
NEW PLUGINS (and also check the little box that says to scan at start of

How do you insult a lawyer?
You might as well not even try. Consider: of all the highly
trained and educated professions, law is the only one in which the prime
lesson is that *winning* is more important than *truth*.
Once someone has sunk to that level, what worse can you say about them?

Ok, at last "I" get to help someone. Payback time. :^)

Download the flash plugins. I have a file called flash_linux.tar.gz that I
got hold of from the flash site I was taken to the last time I tried to
access a flash site. You need to get two files out of this archive.

libflashplayer.so
and
ShockwaveFlash.class

Then go into Konqueror, Settings>Netscape Plugins> and add the above path.
When you've done that click 'scan for new plugins' and wallah It had
better work or I'm gonna look silly. Let me know how you go.

Hopefully someone will answer that question. I have been using Phoenix

Open up Konqueror and click SETTINGS, then CONFIGURE KONQUEROR then
scroll down on the left hand side and you'll see the NETSCAPE PLUGINS
icon - click that and you should have that all enabled and the likes,
and you can do a SCAN for plugins and whatnot...also, double-check on
the PLUGINS tab to see if it's already in there...?? (You did install
the Flash plugin, right?)

If Flash in konq is working then just open KDE
ControlCentre>WebBrowsing>NetscapePlugins

Ensure the path to your Mozilla-1.1 plugin directory is listed , and press
the 'scan for new plugins' button.

if you have the 3 cd set the nsplugins rpm should be on your cds. if you
don't see it with software manager have a look manually. it should be
there. since i still have the 8.1 cds _somewhere_ here i can get it to you

In my own case, I don't really need or want flash - I'd just like

OK, what I did was based on Flash 5.0, KDE 2.2.2 and Mandrake 8.2 (fresh

BTW, I have given up on Konq for flash stuff. Even after getting it
going, whether I used 4.0 or 5.0 plugins, I found it freezing up
frequently on sites using flash. Galeon works just fine, so my kids can
neopet using that.

I looked in help and found the following,

   Netscape® Plugins

   Currently, Konqueror supports Netscape® 4.x plugins.

   If you select Preferences->Web Browsing->Netscape Plugins from the K menu
   you will get a dialog box with two tabbed pages; Scan and Plugins.

I can't do this because I don't have Netscape Plugins option.
WHY?

Carroll,
I removed all the defaults from Konqueror then clicked on add new and
that brought up my /home/tom, double clicked on flash_linux and
basically gave Konqueror no other options when I scanned for plugins.
BTW, this is Flash 5.0 also, I also copy it to my mozilla plugins. My

to deal with.

Re: [newbie] Flash plugin in Konq again

2002-05-25 Thread Carroll Grigsby

Tom:
How did you convince Konqueror that Flash was available? I didn't have any
problems installing Flash in Mandrake 8.1. Perhaps that's because 8.1
installed Netscape 4.x as part of the default installation, so that the
necessary file structure was present when Flash was installed. In 8.2,
however, Netscape is _not_ installed unless it is explicitly specified (which
I didn't do). Konqueror seems to want the necessary Flash references
installed in /netscape/plugins. And, if you don't go through the
kdebase-nsplugins installation and then run nspluginscan, there isn't any way
to tell Konqueror to look for Flash -- at least from the GUI side.

If I may chip in my two cents worth I've had a great deal of success
with flash by downloading the Macromedia Flash Player from
http://macromedia.com to my home directory and just unpacking the files

Re: [newbie] Flash plugin in Konq again

2002-05-25 Thread Carroll Grigsby

Brian:

When I ran nspluginscan, a bunch of unfriendly messages also flew by, but I
decided to ignore them, and so far I have not had any problems.

Let's make sure we're talking about the same things here -- I have a (fairly)
clean new install of 8.2 and KDE 2.2.2. I installed Flash from the PowerPack
Commercial CD. (Netscape 6 had already been installed.) This put
ShockwaveFlash.class and libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/netscape/plugins; it
also put README and readme.html in /usr/share/doc/FlashPlayer-5.0.

I then downloaded kdebase-plugins-2.2.2-93mdk.i586.rpm and installed it with
Software Manager, ran nspluginscan and rebooted. After that, it was just a
matter of running the Scan for new plugins function from Konquer --> Settings
--> Configure --> Netscape Plugins.

Possible problems:
1. Check that /usr/lib/netscape/plugins does contain the two Flash files
mentioned above. It's possible that Flash may have put them someplace else --
perhaps a /flash_linux directory.
2. Did you close and re-open KDE after running nspluginscan? (Hmm -- my notes
show that I did a reboot -- old habits are hard to break. Think it makes any
difference?)
3. Did then you run the Scan for new plugins in Konqueror?

Re: [newbie] Flash plugin in Konq again

2002-05-23 Thread Brian Parish

Sorry to have appeared dim here, but after another careful look I think
maybe it's not me - something is screwy. I have visited the path you
describe before (also available from the KDE config menu).

After clicking on the Scan for nsplugins button I see under the plugins
tab:

Mozilla's real audio plugin
Mozilla's pdf plugin
Netscape's real audio plugin
Netscape's pdf plugin

No flash or whatever. For the record, when I run nspluginscan, I get:

kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3:
undefined symbol: NP_GetValue
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING:
library=/usr/lib/netscape/plugins/raclass.zip:
file=/usr/lib/netscape/plugins/raclass.zip:
/usr/lib/netscape/plugins/raclass.zip: invalid ELF header
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3:
undefined symbol: NP_GetValue
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING:
library=/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so:
file=/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so: /usr/lib/lib1:
shared object not open
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3:
undefined symbol: NP_GetValue
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING:
library=/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/raclass.zip:
file=/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/raclass.zip:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/raclass.zip: invalid ELF header
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3:
undefined symbol: NP_GetValue

A look at the rpm shows that the plugin files end up in /usr/lib.
Presumably they are linked to other locations, but just for fun I added
/usr/lib to the paths in the nsplugins window and clicked the scan
button again. Took a long time, but eventually it finished and made no
difference at all. Still the same four listed in the plugins windows.
Still no flash.

Any more ideas anyone? Can anyone shed some light on whether the
warnings from nspluginscan are normal or fatal?

TIA
Brian

Open Konqueror. Select Settings and then Configure Konqueror. There should be
a Netscape Plugins icon in the left hand column. Open it; there will be a
sheet with two tabs. On the Scan tab, click Scan for Nsplugins. Then,
under the Plugin tab, there will be a list -- mine shows that the Shockwave

Carroll, many of the e-mail systems now have a catch all basket. It doesn't
matter if you write to [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]
or [EMAIL PROTECTED] They get filtered to someones inbox. Of course
d*[EMAIL PROTECTED] is likely to get biffed unopened.

So if i find a broken link or whatever and there is no contact page i just
fire the e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usually somebody gets it and
fixes it. 90% or more of the time they send back a thankyou.

After all if there is no such e-mail address the mail bounces and you get to
know it.

Your comment about writing to the webmaster is interesting. When I first

if you are suffering foggy brain, first check that you have flash. :) i
know that would be were i would mess up. the most obvious place, cot
copying the flash files to /usr/lib/netscape/plugins

then, did you run the nsplugins thing and tell it to scan for plugins?

Roger:
Here's what I ended up doing:
1. Installed the Flash rpm from the Commercial Apps disk.
2. Downloaded kdebase-nsplugins-2.2.2-93mdk.i586.rpm from www.rpmfind.net,
and installed it. (It seems that this file may be on one of the PowerPack
CD's, but somehow Software Manager isn't aware of it. It's not a very big
download (roughly 700K or so.)
3. Ran nspluginscan from the command line.
4. Rebooted KDE. Voila! The Netscape Plugins option showed up in the
Konqueror configuration menu.
5. Called Will (two-year-old grandson, and the prime mover behind this
project), and we watched Tebo slide down Clifford's back. Much joy. One
thing: When I ran nspluginscan, a lot of messages flew by, and some of them
didn't seem too friendly, but it worked. I suppose I should look in the logs.

Michael,
I had problems with Konqueror the other day (nothing to do with the
nsplugins tho). It might pay to check this file which affects starting
KDE:  ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc

Remove any references to Konqueror. For example, this is my ksmserverrc
after removing the konqueror stuff:

[General]
confirmLogout=true
saveSession=false
screenCount=1

[Session]
count=3
discardCommand1=
discardCommand2=
discardCommand3=rm,/home/skinky/.kde/share/config/konsole:11c0a800010001004
6775910072210021
program1=konsole
restartCommand1=konsole,-session,11c0a8000100010046775910072210021
restartStyleHint1=0
restartStyleHint2=0
restartStyleHint3=0
userId1=skinky
userId2=skinky
userId3=skinky

Prior to editing this file a few days ago, it looked something like:

[General]
confirmLogout=true
saveSession=false
screenCount=1

[Session]
count=3
discardCommand1=
discardCommand2=
discardCommand3=rm,/home/skinky/.kde/share/config/konsole:11c0a8000100010046775910072210021
program1=konqueror
program2=konsole
restartCommand1=konqueror,-session,117f010001002773127003029
restartCommand2=konsole,-session,11c0a8000100010046775910072210021
restartStyleHint1=0
restartStyleHint2=0
restartStyleHint3=0
userId1=skinky
userId2=skinky
userId3=skinky

It worked for me. If you don't have any references to konqueror in this
file, I'm no help at all and I just wasted your time ; ) Good luck.

How to get Flash running in Konqueror:

1. Install the Flash plug-in from macromedia.com as normal.

2. Install the kdebase-nsplugins package. It is included in Mandrake.

3. In the KDE Control Centre and go to "WebBrowsing" -> "Netscape Plugins".

4. Click "Scan for new plugins".

My guess is that this uses the latest flash player. The latest one
Macromedia has released for GNU/Linux doesn't have the functionality of
the latest they've released for other platforms. That's proprietary
software for you... I'm not sure when the next plugin for Linux is
coming out. Why don't we write and ask?

   No, I upgraded over 9.2 using rpm -Fvh. I'm in the habit of getting
the mozilla src.rpm from cooker and rebuilding it. Sometimes I use the
Red Hat src.rpm, as it's often available before Mandrake's. I use -Fvh
so that I don't install mozilla mail or irc, neither of which I want.

Re: [newbie] Flash in Netscape-6.01 -- How?

2001-02-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Mike and friends:

OK, here is the lowdown on Netscape 6.01:

I initially installed it in /usr/local/netscape. But after installation,
when I tried to run it by typing in xterm "netscape", it would
invariably bring up Netscape 4.76 (which is located in
/usr/bin/netscape). So, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it in my home
directory under NET6. Well, that has apparently caused other problems.

So, I have uninstalled it once again and reinstalled by default in
/usr/local/netscape. However, there is no Netscape 6 or any Netscape
executable in /usr/local/netscape or /usr/local/bin. But I did copy the
plugins from /usr/lib/netscape/plugins into /usr/local/netscape/plugins
(without overwriting the ones that were already there -- thanks for the
tip -- but I still don't know how to launch Netscape 6. Please remember
that I have both Netscape 4.76 and Netscape 6 installed on my LM72. How
do I now launch Netscape 6, please?

Thanks so very much.
