Ciao, già ho chiesto una volta come si configurava il Wine, ma ho perso l'email che un ragazzomi ha mandato. Chi lo sa configurare mi potrebbe mandare il suo wine.conf ?? Grazie
[newbie-it] Modem usb e 7.2
Qualcuno sa dirmi se ci sono speranze di afar funzionare un modem usb Elsa con la 7.2 ?. Io ho la 7.1 e non c'è verso di farlo andare anche se tastiera e mouse, entrambi usb sono riconosciuti senza problemi. Vorreiusare Linux per andare in rete senza dover cambiare modem. Grazie per eventuali risposte

Dear friends: I've just reinstalled LM7.2, this time selecting the graphical X boot directly into KDE. Everything seems to be fine, but I can't find the "sndconfig" command and program to configure my sound. Until I do so, I can't listen to RealPlayer. I tried it in the console and in KDE's xterm. As a user, just type : 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' and it should give you the details of your CPU. Overclocking a laptop isn't really recommended, although the Celeron's have historicly been very good overclockers. As you've probably noticed by now, your laptop is generating quite a bit of heat. Overclocking your CPU will only make it worse. To save costs and space and to not drain the battery too much, mobile Intel CPU's are only passivly cooled. In my opinion, those CPU's are already being pushed to the limit. One can seriously damage one's CPU by letting it overheat too much. So it's better to leave your setup as it is. If you would really want to overclock, see if you can adjust your Front Side Bus speed from within your laptop's BIOS. Just my .03 Euro (damn exchange rate ;)

I'm not sure why it took that long for your install. It only took me about 38 minutes for a full install using the Alt-E method on the Wal-Mart package with give a person the correct Expert mode menu. What took about 3 hours was all the downloading of KDE2 and other update required for said package. Thank you. Gary A. [newbie] Some 7.2 issues with sound, printing and netscape
Hello. I just installed 7.2 on my IBM Aptiva (Pentium 233). I'm having a few problems. First of all, my netscape button bar is in black and white, but all other colours are working out fine. Secondly, I have a crystal sound card (the ones that come with an Aptiva) and I can't get it to work. The hardware manager thing gives me an error saying that the sound card is busy. Finally, I have a Cannon Bubblejet 100 (yup ... the really old one) plugged into LPT1 (which is lp0 I guess, in Linux). After setting it up, it asks me if I want to do a test page. [newbie] Internet Connection Issue...
Dear All, I am new with Linux. I just install LM 7.0 and it's look good, but one problem I have is internet connection. My dial-up is working good and could connect to my ISP (connected 48 kbps) but when I run the browser (netscape) no one inetrnet site can I open (it seem that no-connection I've been made). I set the netscape to connect directly to internet (EditPreferenceAdvanceProxy). Could anybody tell me what is going on whith my internet. Any help would be great appreciated. Thanks. It's on the second cd, and you can install it from there. ALSA (http://www.alsa-project.org/) has now become the most important provider for sound under Linux. I suggest you download the driver package and install it.

Sounds like you may have a DNS issue. Go to a terminal prompt and try to ping Yahoo's IP address by pinging: 216.32.74.50 If that is successful, next try pinging it by hostname: www.yahoo.com If the IP address works, and the hostname fails, it is probably a DNS issue, and that is a little out of my scope of help. [newbie] DNS issue?
Here is my scenario. I have 2 computers. 1 Windows 98 computer, and 1 Mandrake 7.2 computer. They are directly connected via 100mbs Ethernet. The Mandrake computer has a modem hanging off it, and it is configured to dial into my ISP. I set Internet Connection Sharing up on the Mandrake computer and set the 98 computer up to get its IP address automatically with DHCP. I booted both, and the 98 did receive an IP address from the Mandrake computer, and I could ping, ftp, telnet back and forth and all that good stuff. When I try to use the web, or ping anything by name, it doesn't work. It seems as though the name resolution isn't working on the 98 PC. The DNS is disabled, so I am assuming it is using the Mandrake computer to get its name resolution from. Problem is, I don't know how to check the Mandrake server to see where it is getting its name resolution from. I checked the /etc/nsswitch.conf file, and the order are files dns nis nisplus. I am able to access everything fine from the Mandrake computer, so I believe name resolution on it is fine. I just don't think it is passing name resolution back and forth between Mandrake and 98. If Mandrake is getting its DNS settings (if it isn't getting them from somewhere else) from the ISP when I dial in, where is it configured to tell it to use the DNS from the ISP, and how do I configure it to pass the DNS resolution back to the 98 PC? not sure brian, but in win you have to set the box to be on a lan and tell it to use dns, i set my win98 box to have the same two dns server entries for my isp as i gave the mandrake box, iirc the place to do this is control panelnetworktcp/ip-network adapterproperties, on the dns tab choose enable and fill in the fields, in the gateway tab i have put the address of my mandrake box as that is the gateway to the net (this might not be necessary but it works for me!) bascule On Saturday 25 November 2000 5:10 pm, you wrote: When I try to use the web, or ping anything by name, it doesn't work. If you are using ipchains, just set the DNS in the Windows machine to your ISP's DNS numbers. It sounds like thats all you need. Gene

Bascule, I use Earthlink as my ISP, and Earthlink provides automatic DNS for the dialup connection. I have never configured DNS on either the Mandrake or the 98 PC's. Is there a way I can find out what DNS servers the Mandrake PC is using, so that I can plug those servers into the 98 PC? Got it. Those DNS addresses are dead. I did however look in the /etc/resolv.conf file and see which DNS servers where being used temporarily by PPP, and then set those as the DNS servers on the 98 box. Thanks for the help everyone. [newbie] 7.2 install
I upgrade from 7.1 ( which was working well and fast) to 7.2 using 2 iso images I downloaded. The install seemed to go well. When I rebooted, my machine acted like it was running in slow motion. Opening a terminal window took almost 2 minutes. Opening my browser took forever. The machine did seem to be working but way to slow to be usefull Any ideas? Athlon 600 on ASUS motherboard. 64M RAM GT103

Ok, I finally made it... thanx everyone for the help... I used linux fdisk on the Lnx-Mdk 7.2 install disk, in rescue mode, it's amazing how much more powerful it is than DOS fdisk, wow... Here's what i did: linux fdisk said that the partition with windows on it was an extended linux partition. i wanted to just rename it to a windows partition, but it said that i would have to delete it first. So i deleted it and made a new windows parition on the space that had been labeled with linux extended partition. I then saved, and rebooted, but the computer just stopped, no prompt, nothing. So i rebooted with my windows bootdisk and used DOS fdisk to look at the partitions, it said that there was one non-DOS partition and one DOS partition. I then used my norton basic rescue boot disc, which restored, i think it was my, bootsector. Then i booted normally and everything is just dandy. From what you've been saying you probably need to change it back from whatever it is now (probably a type '83' or a type '85') to a type 'b'. [newbie] Apache activation
Greetings, I've recently upgraded my Mandrake system from 7.0 to 7.2. I had a couple of complications during the install which I won't go into, but ended up with a fresh format install of a Mandrake 7.2 Workstation. I installed all packages available under the 'Custom' option. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get Apache's http daemon (httpd) working. In fact, I'm not even sure that Apache was installed. Should it be installed as a Workstation install, or would I have to had chosen the Server option? Once it is installed, how to you start it? I appears that it is now done through Webmin, but even that didn't seem clear. I have turned on the apache module in Linuxconf's List of modules and rebooted but I am still not seeing my usual /etc/httpd/ directory. Not sure what to try next short of a full Server installation. The only tool I know you can use is the linux cd. There are others but they cost money. Put in the cd, turn on, and answer the questions until the partition program comes up. Use that. Thats a lot of mounts. I see your problem. your floppy is in /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=ext2,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0 The fs=ext2 part is the problem. It is set to read linux floppys. I think it has to be changed to either dos, vfat or auto. One of these will work. Why did you attach these files? Your com port setup under windows needs changeing. They will work with your settings but you will not get directcc to work and hyperterminal will default to 9600. I installed all packages available under the 'Custom' option. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get Apache's http daemon (httpd) working. In fact, I'm not even sure that Apache was installed. Should it be installed as a Workstation install, or would I have to had chosen the Server option? Once it is installed, how to you start it? I appears that it is now done through Webmin, but even that didn't seem clear. I have turned on the apache module in Linuxconf's List of modules and rebooted but I am still not seeing my usual /etc/httpd/ directory. Not sure what to try next short of a full Server installation. [newbie] Controlling Process Order/Timing
I'm trying to force commands following each other in a script to execute one at a time once the preceding command has finished. I applied the command nice with the options to a list of commands and didn't get the results I was seeking. I'm aware that pidof, grep, sed, and a few others can do the job, but not without a loop. I'm looking for a command that has all the processing built-in without "reinventing-the-wheel." [newbie] KDE2 in 7.2 download
Hi all, I am still unable to find the desktop that shows up on the linux-Mandrake tutorial for KDE. I have only a tool bar at the bottom of the page and no icons at all. The K button is a penguin with Linux written in. Is all this normal with the downloaded 7.2 version? I realy like the look of the desk top in the tutorial. Not sure if I have a complete download or if my CDrom is giving up, cause I had several packages (16 in an attempt at expert/workstation install) that failed to install. Can't tell if that is the CD or the CDrom. Any suggestions are welcome. TIA Dennis M.

Do /etc/rc.d/rc.init/httpd status and it'll tell you if it's running. If not do /etc/rc.d/rc.init/httpd start to start it. If you haven't configured Apache yet it might not start so you may have to set some basic server options like your IP address and document root. This isn't to hard so go ahead and give it a try. It should be /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf or something similar as a file name. If you have anything you get stuck on go ahead and email me directly if you like. You might try making sure httpd is actually set to start in your init levels. Look in /etc/rc.d/rc.x (x is your run level) and see if a S##httpd type file exists. On the subject of external modems, beware USB modems. Dennis, I had a modem seem to stop working once in Mandrake. It was a single boot machine so I didnt get to try windows. I finally traced it down to a single ` having turned into a '. or vice versa, in my chat-script. No idea how it happened but it fixed it right up. I remember digging through log files till I got a clue but its been a while and I dont remember much more than that. If you figure it out, post what you did. Sounds like a real bear! Gene

Assuming it's Kppp, either check the de-bug option, so that you'll see the connection speed (handshake) as it exits -or- clk on the docked (asumming you chose to have it docked) icon and it will tell you the 'handshake' speed -or- do as above, but clk on 'details', you'll get a running avg. of the actual connection speed and a graph. I found an internal modem that works with Linux. It is a "ActionTec 56K Internal PCI Call Waiting Modem". On the box it says it supports Linux and was under $70 at WalMart. I had my doubts but I bought it to try it and I'm using it right now. I have had no problems with it at all. I have not tried the call waiting portion, nor do I expect to because I don't plan to have call waiting. One of my servers sometimes hangs or goes into a reboot loop when trying to reinit the video card on reboot. Am still fighting this somewhat but upgrading the video cards bios helped quite a bit. Also have seen in Mandrake 7.1 a few times where services refused to die properly so the system wouldn't shutdown.. just froze before doing any reboot of the hardware and kind of spun it's wheels. Updating to the newest vers of each relevant package seems to have fixed it. if you are both connected to the internet and not via a local lan then netbios won't help you here (unless you go for some strange vpn stuff), you could set up some ftp space you both have access to (some isps provide web space etc that you can only access by dialing directly in so check this) if the files are small you could both use an im client that supports file transfers (you will have to research this to see if a linux client for an im service will transfer files between it and the windows client) i'm assuming of course that either you or your brother don't have permanent ip addresses, in which case you can't set up one or both of your boxes to be accessible to the other via web sever or ftp server (at least not easily). there are also web services such as www.freedrive.com which will do the trick - this is probably your best bet bascule On Sunday 26 November 2000 4:30 am, you wrote: My borther-in-law has a windows computer and he is always wanting help and for me to send files over the internet. NetBIOS over the internet is never a good idea. A computer which is set up to receive and share files in this manner is an open invitation to every hacker and cracker to do whatever they want. [newbie] 'kill' on the desktop
if you click on the kill icon and then on the desktop you lose all the icons and right click functionality on the desktop, i just know i'm going to do this more than once, when a prog.. oh lets be honest, when netscape freezes i never know if i have selcted kill properly or not so i do it a few times, what is the command to run to get the full desktop back, i read elsewhere (here or expert) that the desktop is provided by a prog bascule
