[newbie] NEWBIE: Install problems with LM8.1
New to this list again.. I am not sure if this has been covered yet, I scanned thru the archives, but didn't find anything for my searches. I have a (well one of 4 systems) Cyrix 233, 5GB, 128 DIMM, 8MB SIS video, supported sound/NIC. I have tried to run setup of L.M. 8.1, and keep getting the SAME error when looking for install packages.MISSING BASESYSTEM PACKAGE, this has occured with 3 different ISO burns, in both INSTALL, and UPGRADE modes, also on a freshly formated HD. I know the hardware works, since L.M. 7.01 is running on it now. Please point me to the existing email's or give me suggestions that will put LM 8.1 on my machine. Re: [[newbie] Another question]
Is this CD from the Maximum Linux magazine??? If so I sent then an email along time ago asking if they had problems with a batch of CD's? As yet I have NOT heard anything. BTW I have the exact same problem...error on a Trident video card...strange thing is...it's a supported AT24/3DFX video card Just my $0.02 worth Jaguar "John Mariotti, a.k.a Vercingitorix, a.k.a [ChaOz]-Enigma" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I must, yet again, beg for assistance, before I lose every hair on my head. I just spent the last five hours trying to get X Window installed. Now, during the installation, it says that it is working correctly and will run X upon reboot. All well and good, however, when it reboots it enters Run Level 5 as it should I believe, however it then quickly changes to Run Level 3 for no other reason than to annoy me, I'm quite sure. So I run Linuxconf and ensure it is set to Runlevel 5 same thing happens upon reboot. So then I assume that it must be configured wrong. And we all know what happens when one assumes. Anyways, I type XF86Setup, figuring, moronically I might add, that I might be able to fix this situation. And lo-and-behold I receive a happy little message stating thus - Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database entry Trident TGUI9660 (generic) (line 2513) Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database entry Trident TGUI9680 (generic) (line 2519) Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database entry Trident Cyber 9320 (generic) (line 2537) So then I assume (Yes, I didn't realize my first mistake in assuming), that I made an error upon installation. So I re-install from scratch. This time however when installation commenced and packages where installing, everytime a package with either mdk or xmms was involved, and didn't install the corresponding packages. This, of course, upset me greatly, however I diligently pushed ahead, thinking that since none of the packages that were missed had anything to do with the X Server. Obviously I was wrong. So once again I embarked upon a clean installation, greeted by a clean install, receiving the above Warning's yet again. It was about this time, that I recall, smashing my roommates head against the wallspeaking of which havn't seen him in a while. But at the same time you're also right about it being an operating system. Confused, yet ? Not counting the upgrades of the various versions of Win95, there were THREE releases. The first, Win95 A, was a little too close to DOS for comfort, because they (Microsoft) hadn't quite nailed the 32 bit system. Win95 B came a long way towards that goal, and fixed an enormous batch of "Bugs". Win95 C (The last release), was the closest that Windows95 would come. Sorry. If you're Win98 system crashes when you try to run PKZIP, then you haven't allowed sufficient memory resources to your DOS prompt ICON. Shouldn't the hub lights "dance with pretty colours" even with ONLY the NIC setup to broadcast? Not necessarily... sometimes windows actually DOESN'T broadcast on a regular basis, but it will not broadcast at all if you have not installed the NetBEUI network protocol. If all you are running on is TCP/IP, you have to initiate activity to see the pretty lights :) With the gateway set correctly on your windows boxes, try pinging the internal interface of the linux box. (in DOS Prompt: ping 192.168.0.1 [enter]). If you get a time out error, there's something else wrong. A reply means good things. Now is where ipchains comes in...without it configured correctly, your linux box will not pass any packets from the internal LAN to the outside world. Have you tried pmfirewall? If not (or even if you have) let's try it...you can get it from www.pointman.org and it's free, and easy. in linux, su to root, gunzip and un-tar as necessary, and cd into the pmfirewall-1.1.4. Read the INSTALL and README files to get a sense of what's going on and then we can get started here... at the bash prompt, in the pmfirewall-1.1.4 directory, type (dot-slash): ./install.sh you will be asked for a directory, press [enter] for the default...it's fine. enter eth0 for the external interface, say yes to ONLY the services which you plan to run (if you're not sure, turn it off!) If you use chat/IRC/ICQ say yes to ident. I would definitely say NO to telnet, and YES to ssh, and install OpenSSH or sshd for remote console access. You will be asked during this process if there are any IP ranges that need unrestricted access, or need restrictions, you can select the default unless you have specific needs. Allow pmfirewall to detect your IP. Say YES to masquerading. enter eht1 as your masqued interface. You are statically assigned, so say NO to DHCP. Allow pmfirewall to detect your IP. Accept the proposal to have pmfirewall start at boot (unless you don't like this). pmfirewall should make all the entries to scripts, and services, and install is complete. at bash prompt, type: /usr/local/pmfirewall/pmfirewall restart (Use the directory you chose in the first response if it is different from the default) Pmfirewall should shutdown, restart, and display your external/internal information. Assuming this all went smoth, try to ping the external interface of the linux box (24.112.x.x ) from the windows boxes. You should now get a reply here. (If not, something is still not configured correctly in linux. But...) Again, assuming all went well: get the DNS information from the linux box (cat /etc/resolve.conf) and ping (from the windows machines) the DNS IPs from resolve.conf. If you get a reply Great! You can now enter these DNS IPs into the network configuration applets of your windows boxes (since your statically assigning IPs to your internal LAN, you need to statically assign the DNS as well). When that's done try pinging (DOS prompt again) www.redhat.com (or anything). Ie: ping www.redhat.com [enter] (sorry if this is TOO basic for you...but I also don't want to get over your head if you haven't had much experience in networking...) If you get a reply, DNS name resolution is working. You should now have a

Unfortunately, it wasn't as backwards compatible as most of us would I hate to tell ya...there were also versions D and E of Win95 Jaguar have liked. It was an O/S all by itself, but I will admit that it was a "Clunky" one that was full of problems. The first version of Win95 (as previously mentioned, it is referred to as "A"), was intended to pave the way to get rid of DOS. I aggree that it didn't do a great job, but it wasn't running on DOS. Sorry. If you're Win98 system crashes when you try to run PKZIP, then you haven't allowed sufficient memory resources to your DOS prompt ICON. It runs just fine on every system I've ever had it on, including Windows98 SE. The question here is why use it at all?? Why not Winzip?? Anyway, I just thought you guys could use a break from pissing each other off. I assume that the reason that your all here, instead of hanging around the Microsoft forums, is because you're all gratified in seeing that there are excellent alternatives to Windows. Linux is the first one that is becoming "User Friendly". I would like to think that it will become the next "Technological Marvel" accepted and used by Billions, er um, Millions of satisfied people. But why all the stress guys? What's it gonna prove? Don't think that just because someone writes an article in a magazine, that the article is a profound parable from a prophet or some thing. These guys make mistakes too. And remember that these articles are also the writers' opinion, not necessarily facts ! The whole thing with Linux is that you should learn , and that involves personal experience, and studying, and playing with it. That's half the fun. You can screw it up as much as you want, write new apps, fix old apps, anything, and Linux will keep coming back for more! Anyway, that's my four cents! Some time ago AoL was heavily tied in with MicroSoft, and used IE as it's browser. Windoze was needed to connect, but most Linux users at the time didn't really care since AoL was looked on by most Net users with disdain. There were some convoluted work-arounds to get Linux to work with AoL (IIRC), but they didn't work well. Then AoL bought Nutscrape. NS was also developing their own server software. This was continued as NS/AoL server software. As far as Linux goes, this made connecting even more troublesome, but I believe I've heard it's possible. Again, doesn't work very well, slow at best. I might remember the solution involves 'wine' or some other Windoze emulation scheme (?) Looking at the graph, altho NS servers are up very slightly last month, their overall place on the Net is minor and generally shrinking. Looks like NS sold out at just about the right time ;) If it wasn't for Juno and AoL, NS servers would prob'ly be history. A little more opinion: A few years ago, AoL got mostly clueless newbies as new signups. (hence the disdain by 'veteran' Net users). Within 6 months, most realized that AoL sux, and moved to other ISP's. Within the last year or so, AoL seems to have that turned around. So if the email was composed of a single HTML _BOLD_ letter it would still be 1KB, or if the email was text ONLY of a single keystroke...it would still be 1KB. It is true there would be more text to read in an HTML message (in a TEXT only emailer)...but the size of 2 identically worded emails one with HTML, and one in text only...the file size would probably be exactly the same, but there would be more text if HTML was read in a TEXT only emailer. Re: [Re: [newbie] LILO Mandrake 7.1]
Not true. Since patitioning occurs alot before installing the boot loader, Linux has already NOT created the /Boot patition independant of the loader. It is at the end of the install you actually choose your loader, either LILO, or GRUB. Therefore I believe the Kernel its self is responsible for the 1024 limitation, or in MDK 7.1's case non-limitation. HTH Jaguar "Charles A Edwards" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As far I as know because using LILO requires a boot partition LILO still suffers from the 1024 limit. GRUB which is the default in 7.1 does not reguire a boot partition and allows for Linux to be installed anywhere and on any size hd. Re: [[newbie] linux cdrom install problem...]
Something that might work is to make a 20 MB FAT patition and install MS Dos and then the DOS drivers for the SB16 soundcard w/Panasonic CD drivers...and try the DOS boot (might need to d/l the newest "autoboot.bat" image from Mandrake) feature on the Linux CD. HTH Jaguar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, my name is Brian Preston. I recently got a free install CD of the Linux-Mandrake 7.0 version of Linux. I'm running this on a 486/66 and have a proprietary Sound Blaster/Panasonic CDROM. After careful research, I have found two sources on the internet claiming that Linux supports such a beast. This particular model is an IBM Multimedia Modem Plus with a Panasonic 2x CDROM drive model number 563, --I think, and am pretty sure. Bottom line, the DOS driver says it's for the 56* series. And the drive does work. I am trying to install Mandrake as I was saying, but can't get the TEXT ONLY, VGA 16 installer to see the CDROM. When I choose the SoundBlaster/ Panasonic, I am given the choice, autoprobe --which doesn't work, it "can't find that device anywhere on the system", or specify options. I am then prompted with a sbpcd= command prompt with the words, IO, IRQ, and Name, I think... The IO and IRQ I'm positive about... But it basically is asking, where is it? I know, through the process of using the DOS setup software for the card, that the CDROM is on IO base port 0x310, but don't know of the IRQ number. How do I tell Linux to search the 0x310 port? I need the exact syntax, because I'm terrible in Linux, as of yet, which is my reason for installing it. Also, as a second inquiry. I also have an old 386 notebook, that is networked through the parallel port using a D-Link 620 adapter, (Which is also supported under linux) anyway, it does not have a CDROM, and would use the desktop's to install, anyway, I would you the network.img, right? But still, when I boot the machine, the kernel is compiled for a 486 with a math coprocessor, how can I recompile the kernel to run on such a machine, the catch being, in DOS or Windows 3.1, or would I have to wait until I got the desktop running, then build a boot disk with the recompiled kernel, then boot and install that way? Any help with my long questions, would be absolutely appreciated, and keep up the excellent work, giving us an alternative... to WINBLOWS... Brian, (dmaul683) YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Re: [[newbie] X-server crash]
At the LILO prompt when first starting Linux type "linux 3" -- w/o quotes. That will take you to a text console, from there you can rerun your X setup with whatever config program your prefer. I have IP forwarding set in the Netcfg for eth0 (setup with DHCP) and the static IP(192.168.x.x)/Mask/BCast set for eth1. All of this is done correctly ( I think), but the "IN" port on the hub is not lighted up with the eth1 cable in the hub. The Win boxes while plugged into the hub have their respective lights lit and are trying to talk to a nonexistant broadcast IP thru the 192.168 network series. Has anyone run into this before, and if so, what was done to remedy the situation? Re: [Re: [newbie]Modem Setup]
No because on most COM ports if the system is initializing COM2 as a device, it won't look for anything else, and since an external modem has it's own communications board in it, it conflicts with the system set COM 2 and the modem communications board in it. It is typical to disable a COM port to stop conflicts with some (read MODEMs)devices in paticular. As for the Phoenix BIOS, I am pretty sure it is the DEL key to enter setup, just look for a section about "PERIFERALS" or something like that, and find COM2 and disable it. MAKE DAMN SURE you only change the COM2 settingif in doubt exit WITHOUT saving. It is probably a good idea to make a note of ALL the BIOS setting now if you ever have motherboard battery failure. And so you don't lose the paper...fold it and put it INSIDE the case where it won't cause any problems...:) but is available for reference. HTH Jaguar Murray [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: knowing what brand of bios you have would be helpful too. Award? AMI? Phoenix? Other? It's a Phoenix, couldn't see a date or version number. Re: [[newbie] Video Card Error]
Is that video card NOT a 3DFX I have a similar one called Alliance AT24 with Pro Motion using the AT25 3DFX drivers for Windows ( on my Windows box). Haven't tried this card with Linux as I have a Cirrus Logic 5465 in mine. Try setting up with Glide enabled. Specifically, I can't get it to accept the correct resolution. I am running a 233 MHz Intel clone with OpenGL and MMX support, with 48 megs of RAM. My video card is an Alliance ProMotion 6422 and my monitor is an IBM 6540 G42, both as recognized by my Windoze software. (Unfortunately, as I purchased this computer secondhand, I do not have the specific documentation.) Both the video card and the monitor appear in the lists provided by the Mandrake installer. My Windows configuration is 800x600, with high-color (16 bit). The trouble is, when I feed this information to the installer, the screen flickers a few times, and comes back with the error message "Hung in ApmSync(), try changing some parameters." This happens no matter what resolution I try to use. I tried some other video cards, just for the fun of it, and if they worked with my card at all, they came up with the same "Hung in ApmSync()" error. The only way I could get X to run was using the VGA16 server by selecting the "Unknown VGA compatible" video card. My card _should_ be using the SVGA server (which is what Mandrake selected for it), but when I try to use it I get the above error message. If there is anyone that can help me on this one, or at least explain what is happening, I would very much appreciate it. Greetings, Adrian = ___ "But how am I to know the good side from the bad?" Yes, but it is DOS based, called Norton Utilities 8, and the program to run there is called CALIBRATE, it does extensive pattern testing on the hard drive. So I went to use the Kill tool on it, but I couldn't because all the desktop icons had disappeared, leaving only black outlines of where they would normally be. I still wasn't overly concerned because this happens from time to time anyway. I tried to shutdown, but the shutdown message just came up and froze, along with everything else except the mouse. So I manually SNIP! WOW! I've never had any of these problems, it looks like a flaky hard drive, I know Linux is a LOT more particular about it's disk/file conditions. Back when I was using WinLinux 2000 (Linux used as a BIG Windoze file) I would have to run scan disk almost everytime I tried to use WinLinux! But once Linux was sure of it's files and their condition it ran well. The easiest way to tell is if there is DOS support for the internal modem, ie: will work in DOS to dial out. The system otherwise works just great, and also prints just fine through the same port I'm trying to get the camera to work through. Killing the lpd daemon hasn't helped, either. I looked in the archives for this list hoping to find this had already been tackled. No dice. I found the same paraport busy error had came up for people when they were trying to get their Zip drives to work through the parallel port. The solution to that problem came by creating a mount point for the Zip drive (which I don't think is necessarily right for a camera). I also learned that the paraport busy error only means the driver didn't load correctly, and not that the port is necessarily busy. A search on Deja news shows a few people asking this same question about getting the cam to work, but no one has ever responded as far as I could see. The Quick Cam mini-howto sorta brushed over the whole driver loading issues, and I found no other references anywhere else. I may come up dry here, too, but I guess it's worth a shot. Supposedly this camera works under Linux. It'd be great if I could get it to work myself. The Dogma chased the Stigma, and was hit by the Karma. Re: [Re: [newbie] modem/internet/connection/cdrom2]
I think the problem lies in the wording... the correct designation is Serial Communications Port(s), or Serial1, or commonly COM1. And a printer as a Parallel Port Also don't be confused with a Modem on Com3/4/5 etcthe motherboard supports many Com ports but the BIOS only specifies Serial Com1 and 2. Modems, and other devices that use communications have their OWN COM port on the hardware and will NOT show up in the System BIOS, but will show up in the OS as supported COM ports. So if you have to disable COM2 in the BIOS, choose SERIAL port 2, and disable if you can. Otherwise you will have to re-jumper the modem to COM 3 or higher. HTH Jaguar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Alan, When I go into my BIOS I didn't seem to locate any com ports. The intallation within Windows gives me an error message to the effect of: BootMagic Installation cannot complete because: 1. There is no FAT16 or FAT32 partition available under the 1024 cylinder or, 2. BootMagic is already installed on a hidden partition. Any ideas? The Second, more important problem: When running the DrakX installation utillity from CD-ROM I get to the drive mounting point, only to find that Linux is not recognizing my drive (I suspect this is because my hdd is running from the ATA/66 Controller) I have tried all the drivers listed and none of them will work. Also I found some instructions geared for Red Hat 6.1 where you enter "text" at the boot: prompt and make changes manually. Mandrake 7 gives me the message, unable to locate kernel image "text". Is anyone willing to give me detailed instructions on how to fix this? I have never even seen Linux running except for screenshots, so please explain in plain terms. Thanks very much! Re: [RE: [newbie] kppp]
I had a similar problem with my internal jumpered modem...try playing/adjusting the FLOW CONTROL for the modems... HTH Jaguar "Stan DeWitt" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Let me get in on this thread. I've been having the same problems as Rainer Lindenmaier (and many others). I have installed Linux Mandrake 7 on three PCs. I can't get KPPP to start on two of them (don't ask me why it works on one of my desktop PC's - an IBM Aptiva with 64MB of RAM and an AMD 300 MHz processor with an external modem). On a second desktop PC (Cyrix PR200 with 80 MB of RAM and both internal and external modems) the modems dial out, connect with the ISP's modem and then I get a message KPPP timed out. I get the same message on my Fujitsu C-4235 notebook (AMD K-2 450MHz 64 MB RAM, and an internal Linmodem that also dials out, connects and then kppp refuses to start. I've added the "noauth" line to the options file. I've even installed Kppprpm from a Red Hat 6.2 disk with no success. Does anyone else have any ideas? It is really frustrating having a Linux system which really depends on the Internet for the latest documentation and updates and not being able to connect to the Internet. - Stan DeWitt -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Civileme Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2000 6:15 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] kppp Rainer Lindenmaier wrote: after made my settings in kppp on new installed LM 7.0 I get connection to my IPS (indicatet on the taskpanel) but then comes nothing more. Re: [[newbie] Mandrake 7.02-i486]
I believe your problem lies in the system security, lower it a notch or two...and ROOT will be able to login. Use DrakConf to access the system security. Re: [Re: [Re: [newbie] LILO and modem issues]]
Well in my way of thinking...the BIOS assigns Drive letters weather there is a filesystem on it or not...changing the Windows C: installed drive to somewhere else in the chain, will still produce the file not found errors because the drive is now assigned Drive D or more, and the installed drive was previously C:, depending on the chain PM IDE=C --- of course drive letters will change with mulitple. PS IDE=D partitions per drive SM IDE=E SS IDE=F Now with modern BIOS's you can set to boot from A or C or D or CD-ROM or SCSI, etc...using that may help the process... But once Windows is installed to a drive...the Regisrty uses that as the path to where the files are located. HTH Jaguar Michael Holt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Actually, if you were to run to separate drives, and the first drive had no dos partitions on it, Windows wouldn't even recognize it. It would still call the second drive 'C' (because non-dos partitions don't get a drive letter). At least that makes sense in my head, well that's another story. I've played with different configurations and it's hard to remember sometimes what works and what doesn't. Lilo has given me the warning in the past that the /boot partition has to be before the 1024th cylinder, but I say 'ok' and it works anyway. Right now I'm using the BeOS boot manager (uninstalled the OS because at that time it didn't support my vid card, but left the boot manager cause it works good) and it doesn't care where your OS is installed. At one time, I had 4 different OS's booting off of my primary drive; 1. WinNT 4, 2. Win98, 3. Mandrake, 4. BeOS 4.5. This worked just fine with the BeOS boot manager booting all of them. Jaguar wrote: Not true...the installed to Drive of ALL the software is set to C Drive, ie: path to files installed C:\office\word\blabla.exe That is much more time consuming to change all the installed DIR's locations in Windows than setting up the LILO boot. HTH Jaguar Michael Holt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How about switching your drives? If you make Linux /dev/hda and Windows /dev/hdb (make Linux your primary master and put windows on your primary slave). You shouldn't have to change too much, just the jumpers on your Windows drive. I would like to say that I have two drives. On the first (20GB) I've got WinNT, Win98 and finally, Mandrake Linux. On the second (13GB), I have extra storage space for FAT32 and Linux. This works great for me, I've never lost any data. Mike The Russells wrote: Yup, I tried it. I ran "lilo" at the command prompt after I saved it and it told me /dev/hdb is not a regular file. Maybe this is a good excuse to get a whole new and different box?! Any excuse, any at all... An iMac, eh? Cool. Mine is grape and is quite neglected since this Linux thing came around. Re: [Re: [newbie] OT--BIOS]
OK...lets get this straight...to flash the BIOS, you go to your motherboards home page...look up the exact MODEL # you have, with the SAME BIOS mfg. ( in some years due to supply problems, different BIOS mfg's were put on the same model of mobo ) then get your BIOS from them...as far as I know alot of the older BIOS' were _NOT_ flashable. Flashable BIOS has only been in the last 4 - 7 years as a standard. But most/all of them in the last few years have been upgradable. Most of the BIOS' for different mfg's of mobo's are specific to thier chipsets, eg: ABIT PX5 with AWARD BIOS, has a different chipset/buses/etc than an ASUS P5A with an AWARD BIOS So my advice is to get MAKE/MODEL/BIOS MFG. of _YOUR_ mobo, and go get the correct flash file. Also read the directions and understand them.:) HTH Jaguar Rial Juan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Uhh, dude... Upgrading a BIOS is free; all you gotta do is download the flash-utillity and the new image from the manufacturer's site. Be warned though, you can not switch from one brand of BIOS to another, AFAIK; you'll have to stay with the same brand, but you'll get a higher version.
