[newbie] Dying Gateway and Internet Connection

2001-11-29 Per discussione Traci Collins

Because I am using a satellite broadband connection that isn't supported
in Linux I have to use another computer on my lan as a gateway to the
Internet. All the settings are correct and the setup works most of the
time. Unfortunately, my system seems to forget the gateway on a regular
basis. The fix is to restart networking and everything is fine again.
When it has forgotten the gateway I can ping anywhere on the Internet
via ip address but it doesn't find the name servers. I can ping the name
servers and I have connectivity, it is like the system just forgets to
use them. I can use the name servers from any of the other PCs on the
network - just not my Linux box, until I restart networking. Has anyone
heard of a similar problem? This is a new one for me with Mandrake 8.1.
I didn't have this problem with 7.2 and essentially the same network
setup. Any suggestions about what might be flakey?

I wouldn't say it is an easy way, as far as I know it is the only way to
use the RPMs, that is, you download each of the dependencies and install
them. When they result in dependencies you download and install those.
You keep doing that until you stop getting dependencies and then you
work your way back up the chain installing all the rpms that failed
previously. It takes some time but all the rpms are there at the
Evolution site so it is mostly just tedium. The latest candidate is much
more stable than the version that shipped with Mandrake 8.1.

I figured something went wrong by me using the rpm drivers at first, then
trying the tar files, then modifying that console.perm file.. so I'll stick
with ONE set of driver files this time.
Actually, I suspect the opposite since I have just successfully gotten
the Nvidia drivers up by using the 8.1 rpms from MandrakeUser, the
Instructions from MandrakeUser and the one missing instruction from
MandrakeUser, the need to go all the way down to a system power off and
cold boot after the drivers are installed.

That worked perfectly for me, YMMV, but I think where you got into
trouble was trying to fix the failures after the rpm install by changing
security permissions rather than power cycling the system. I could
easily have gone there because most of the early advice focused on
fixing the security problems and that might have been important with
versions of Mandrake prior to 8.1, but with 8.1 and using the
MandrakeUser rpms it isn't necessary to do anything to the security
settings. The fixes you attempted probably put you in a position where
the proper setup couldn't work even after a power cycle.

I would urge you to try the MandrakeUser 8.1 rpms again, run XFdrake to
set your resolution, shutdown, power off, and cold boot. That is all
that is necessary for 8.1 with a stock kernel. Anyone who has updated
their kernel will ofcourse need to use the sources to recompile. The
only area of possible confusion would be if people didn't know which of
the three 8.1 stock kernels they have. I have the download edition of
8.1 and the Nvidia kernel rpm that worked with that one is the one that
is refered to as the standard kernel. Obviously, those of you with
multiprocessors will recognize that you need the smp rpm, I wasn't sure
which versions of 8.1 would use the third kernel option but I correctly
suspected that they wouldn't include the download edition.

Hi! I am wondering what I need to do beyond installing the Nvidia
drivers for Open GL or Mesa to work. Or if that is an inappropriate goal
what is a simple 3D thing I can do to observe the effect of having 3D
drivers on my system.

I downloaded the RPMs for 8.1 from the MandrakeUser site and followed
the instructions that were there. I seem to have been successful because
Gnome is working just like normal. Now I would like to do something that
makes use of the 3D capabilities of the Nvidia drivers but when I go to
the Mesa and OpenGL demos in the toys section of the amusements menu
they don't appear to be working. OpenGL demos open a Window but it
appears to include my desktop and it never does anything else, the Mesa
demos don't seem to even launch. I click but nothing visible happens and
I can't find a process for them in gtop.

Is there something I need to do to activate 3D support other than
successfully installing the Nvidia kernel and glx? The instructions said
that I just needed to run XFdrake and choose my resolution after rpming
the drivers. I did that. The instructions said that I didn't need to
edit anything since I was using 8.1, but, I either don't understand what
should be happening or I'm don't know how to invoke what should be
happening.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

[newbie] Mail Folder Lost in Transition from Netscape to Mozilla

2001-11-10 Per discussione Traci Collins

Hi! When I upgraded from Mandrake 7.2 to 8.1 I kept my /home tree intact
and reformatted all the other partitions for a complete re-install. One
of my most important goals was to keep the mail folders that I had
established to hold on to important old mail. In several of my accounts
everything worked perfectly, even though Mozilla came up when I hit the
icon to launch Netscape Communicator there was no problem once i chose
tasks mail and news - my mail folders and all the old mail was there.
Unfortunately in one account this didn't happen. The .nsmail directory
is still there and seems to have all the folder files just like it
should, unfortunately Mozilla's mail and news section doesn't seem to be
able to access them. I checked out the import options but the wizard has
no provision for migrating Communicator Mail to Mozilla. Is there some
way to tell Mozilla in that account to look at .nsmail for the mail
folders and boxes? Is there some repair facility that will reindex the
mailboxes and make their contents visible to Mozilla? I'm not sure what
is needed but I think I have all my old mail, that it is just invisible
to Mozilla. I would appreciate getting pointed in the right direction.
Thanks.

Still on the general topic of StarOffice. I am using the 6.0 beta and I
seem to have messed up the database integration some how, or perhaps I'm
just not sure what I should look for if it is working properly. I went
through the StarOffice installation prior to doing the Adabas
installation. The StarOffice installer told me it couldn't find the
database and that if I wanted those features I should run that
installation. I ran the database installation the same way I ran the
StarOffice installation but I can't detect any evidence from inside
StarOffice that I have added the database. There isn't a menu option for
a new data file under the file menu. I have no idea what I should be
looking for but it seems like it ought to be a little more obvious than
this. I originally did a /net install of both programs and then ran a
user install from the directory I created during the /net install. Any
advice on how to get back on track would be appreciated. Thanks.

 Traci Collins
 http://www.rof.net/wp/tcollins/traci.html

 Traci,

I found a webpage on linuxnewbie.org that had just what you and I were looking for!
It was written by Avatar but I've did some modifications for our period of
instruction. They were written for Netscape 4.7x but I found them compatible with
Netscape 6 (ie v.6 or v.7)

 RealPlayer basically is running the show using these MIME types;

 1. Open up Netscape and click on "Edit" and then "Preferences."

 2. On the new screen that appears, click the little arrow next to "Navigator" and
then "Helper Applications."
On the right, you should see a list of all the mime types already in the system.
This is where we will be adding in the info to configure the G2 player.

 3. Click the "New type..." button to bring up a new mime tpye.

 4. Enter the follwing settings,
***REMOVE THE CHECK IN THE CHECK BOX***
then click the "OK" button to save them.

 Description of type: RealMedia File
 File extension: .rm
 MIMEType: application/vnd.rn-realmedia
 Application to use: /usr/bin/realplay %s

The description doesn't matter, but the rest does. Make sure to click the box nextto
"Application" to enable G2, and don't forget the "%s" part or it will just open G2
and not stream. If G2 installed somewhere other than /usr/bin/realplay, replace that
part with your path. Another thing to watch is that you put the "." in front of the
suffix.

 5. Add all of the following using the steps 3 4.

 Description of type: RealVideo File
 File extension: .rv
 MIMEType: video/vnd.rn-realvideo
 Application to use: /usr/bin/realplay %s

 Description of type: RealAudio File
 File extension: .ra, .ram
 MIMEType: audio/vnd.rn-realaudio
 Application to use: /usr/bin/realplay %s

Description of type: RealAudio File 2
 File extension: .ra, .ram
 MIMEType: audio/x-pn-realaudio
 Application: /usr/bin/realplay %s

 *Special Note*

I couldn't get Netscape 6 to recognize both RealAudio files but I have had no
problems... yet! :)

***REMOVE THE CHECKS IN THE CHECK BOXES***

Now, your G2 player should work great with Navigator 6. But say you hop over to
live365.com and you want to listen for awhile. Well, live365.com sends you a mp3 play
list, not a standard stream. This is nice if you're sitting behind a firewall and
your administrator has blocked streamed data. To get this up and running on you Linux
box, add this last part into Netscape, again using steps 3 4.

 Description of type: Live365
 File extension: .pls
 MIMEType: audio/x-scpls
 Application to use: /usr/bin/realplay %s

So, now maybe you want to hop over to MP3.com and have a lsiten over there.
No problem. look down the list for "MPEG Audio." Once you find it, click on it, then
click on edit. Change the follwing:

 Description of type:MPEG Audio
 File extension:
 MIMEType: audio/mpeg
 Application to use: /usr/bin/realplay %s

***REMOVE THE CHECK IN THE CHECK BOX***

 (Click OK)

We have to add another one now. Follow step 3 4 to add this one in.

Description of type: MPEG Audio 2
 File extension: .m3u
 MIMEType: audio/x-mpegurl
 Application to use: /usr/bin/realplay %s

***REMOVE THE CHECK IN THE CHECK BOX***

 (Click OK)

That should do it. Now the G2 player will handle all that media from the web with
little or no hickups. Enjoy!

 Cheers Everyone

removed it. Now when I attempt to add in the correction I keep getting
an error message that the media type already exists and it asks if I
would like to replace the existing type. I click on yes but the type is
never visible on the screen and Netscape crashes whenever I click on a
url that would be played with Realplayer. Has anyone had success getting
the media types correct in Netscape 6? Can you point me in the right
direction. The scripts that come with Realplayer8 are obviously for
Communicator so executing them again does not sort out the problem. Any

[newbie] More Alsa and the Ac97

Hi! I read the thread on Alsa and AC97 with interest. I also have one

existing sound modules and modprobe the appropriate Alsa modules
unfortunately I have some device problems. The Alsa Player will play
wav sounds now but none of the other sound programs such as Xmms will
work. None of the graphical mixers will work either.

I am not that far into a fresh install so I am willing to go either
way. I need to figure out how to get a fresh Mandrake 7.2

process and everything seems to have worked as planned, except, this
time I didn't get the default desktop icons for my users. Is there a
step that I missed? Rather than going through a complete re-install

Mandrake used to support an option that would do that but I can't

Make sure that the cd is in the drive and then go to the MSDOS command

should be able to create a bootdisk this way.

[newbie] Text Mode Install When Starting Install from DOS

2000-03-09 Per discussione Traci Collins

Hi! I am attempting to install Mandrake 7.0-2 on a laptop which can
have either a floppy disk or a CDROM but not both. I need to use the
installation method which lets me start from DOS.

My laptop uses the CT6 chipset which is listed in the supported
hardware list but I am unable to see the DrakX screen when I do the
graphical install.

My problem is that I would like to do a text install which is started
from DOS. When I use the autoboot.bat file to start the installation
from DOS I don't get the prompt which lets my type in Text and choose
the text mode installer. I would like to edit the bat file so that I
can invoke the text mode, either by getting the prompt or by giving
the right command to get into the text mode immediately.

Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do? Axalon? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

[newbie] Problems With Linux4Win on a Laptop

2000-03-05 Per discussione Traci Collins

Linux4Win sounded like the perfect technology to use to play with
Linux on my laptop. The laptop uses the Chips and Technologies 6
video chipset and has an active matrix screen set to 800X600
resolution. I checked the Mandrake home page and the 6 is listed
as supported under Mandrake 7. I began the Linux4Win installation
process, I performed the pre-installation processes described in the
demo spotlight on the Mandrake home page but when the graphical
installer was supposed to start up it was impossible to see what was
said on my screen. I could see a ghost of a penguin near the top of
the screen but the bulk of the screen was completely black and
unreadable.

Does anyone know if there are any switches for Linux4Win that will
force it to give me a text based installation manager up until the
point that it lets me choose my X configuration with the CT6
controller? Obviously the simple graphics which should run on
anything don't run on my laptop.

Is there another way to approach the problem?

Re: [newbie] Problems With Linux4Win on a Laptop

2000-03-05 Per discussione Traci Collins

The problem is that I loose the ability to see my screen before I
have the opportunity to pick the expert mode. Drakx goes graphical
before it lets you choose which of the modes you want. I need to be
able to tell the lnx4win installation not to go graphical until after
I have had that opportunity. It seems to be very prepackaged to work
exactly one way, which is good, but I am hoping that Mandrake left in
some switches to handle the exceptional cases. I can't find those
switches documented if they exist. I'm hoping that I just missed the
right document and that someone can point me toward it.

According to the manufacturer's web page, no. I haven't gotten the

trust them on this.

 I think it's safe to assume booting from a dvd isn't a
major problem SuSE is doing it. Basicly what was done was just to allow
 for a 4gig iso9660 filesystem.

Okay, I already have a normal DVD drive on this box and I have been
booting CDs from it but never a DVD since software isn't usually
distributed that way. It is good to hear that at least one of the
distributions is doing it.

cdrecord is your only option barring another OS. I remeber hearing about a
packet driver maybe being started, but don't know what became of
it. Standard usage of even cd-rw drives use cdrecord's -blank switch to re
prep the disk for a re-write.

I was afraid of that SIGH. Oh well, since you have heard that

I found the second link but I wasn't sure it would directly apply to
me since I didn't have daily data requirements of that size. I am
still fuzzy about a couple of things, if you don't mind continuing to
help I would like to ask a couple of followup questions.

Once I have sent an ISO image to my DVD-Ram disk can the resultant
disk be read by a standard CD-ROM drive as long as I keep the size
under 650 megs? If not, can it at least be booted in a DVD-ROM drive
to do things like operating system installs?

When I am just using a DVD-Ram disk for backup or extra storage space
do I even have to use something like cdrecord? Or since it is a scsi
drive and I have a working scsi driver can I put an ext2 fs on it and
just copy or move things to it via normal linux commands?

I think I will understand the role of the cdwriter program a bit
better if I have the answer to these three questions.

[newbie] Netscape Messenger Fails to Open in Just One of My User Accounts

1999-10-29 Per discussione Traci Collins

Hi! I just upgraded to Mandrake 6.1 by reformatting everything but
/home and doing a clean install. Then I removed Netscape 4.61 and
installed the glibc version of Netscape 4.7 since Mandrake had not
yet posted 4.7 rpms on the update page.

Everything seems to be working pretty well except in one of my user
accounts. In that account Netscape refuses to open Messenger. I have
chosen to have Messenger open automagically whenever Netscape is
invoked but in that one account it fails to open. If I choose the
Communicator menu and the Messenger option it also fails to open.
There is no error message and it always fails.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a fix for this?

[newbie] Strange Jumping Between Virtual Desktops

instead of opening the window I will suddenly jump from virtual

I am using Mandrake 6.1, Gnome and Enlightenment, and I have applied
the 6.1 updates using the KDE upgrade utility from my root account. I
installed Mandrake 6.1 by formatting everything except for my /home

This isn't a big deal but it does happen often enough to be
irritating. Does anyone have a suggestion about how I might be able
to fix this problem?

[newbie] Recreating the standard Mandrake Desktop Icons under 6.1, Gnome and Enlightenment

Hi! I recently upgraded to 6.1 by reformatting everything except for
my /home partition and doing a clean install. Once that was done I
went ahead and recreated my users. This always destroys the standard
Mandrake icons on each user account's desktop and in the past I have
used the recreate desktop option which was available for gnome by
right mouse clicking on the desktop. The right mouse button menu has
been dramatically changed in 6.1, mostly for the better, but the
recreate desktop option has been removed. I have found an option to
recreate the KDE desktop under the KDE menu but I can't find an
option to recreate the gnome desktop anywhere.

Does anyone know which script recreates the gnome desktop and where I
might find that script? Thanks.

My error message tells me that it can't set the share lock on the RPM

Obviously my first attempt left a lock in the wrong state or

[newbie] Applications from CD

that provides at least terse instructions for launching and using the
applications? I have searched around on the Mandrake site and
