[newbie] graphical boot up under 8.2

2002-04-07 Per discussione quaylar

hiho all,

I am wondering why i haven´t already read such a question here (or did i
miss it ?).
Anyway - as the subject says - how can i get rid of this graphical bootup
screen - it SUCKS !

I want the normal text bootup back, black background and linux kernel
messages floating down my screen.

I already searched in deja which turned up with the solution to uninstall
the bootsplash rpm and removin the quit option from the append line
in lilo.conf.
It didnt solve my problem - in 8.1 one was able to switch off this
feature in mandrake control - but this isnt possible any more, the option
is gone (why )
So - can anybody provide a solution to this (i am pretty sure there are
lots of u who want to kick this graphical bootup too ;)

greets

rick,

i can suggest u following way :

1) goto http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/cmlan.html and follow the
steps there to get a working win-linux lan
2) goto http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/cipc.html and follow the
instructions there to get your mandrake box
masquerading all the traffic from the windows box.

because that is what u want to do - u want to mask all traffic that goes
from the win box to the internet (via the linux router)

additional sources of information would be :

the IP-Masquerading Howto
the IP-Tables Howto (this is a linux-firewall)
Netfilter-Howto

u will find all this howtos and much more at www.linuxdoc.org

btw. - mandrakeuser is a great source of information - and the guides are

hi,

in general - u dont need an antivir-scanner for linux because there arent

  u r right - but i didnt do a mega-upgrade.

One thing might be worth checking. If you open kde Control

Just thought I would jump in here, if you are using a 56K modem the downloads
on the Mandrake update sites can take quite some time.

ehm -no, i am using a 512 kbit adsl line - so that should be no prob.

  And the box will be
grey with nothing on it for a while, until it gets enough data transfered or
until the transfer starts.

hmmm - it doenst look like that - its simply frozen

I have been on some sites that I waited for up to
10 minutes before I got an indication of a download occurring. So, I guess
what I am saying is try it again and let it sit there for what you begin to
feel is an unreasonable amount of time because the servers seem to be slow.

well - i dont have to wait that long - because it tells me that it cant
download the packages after about 2-3 mins
the grey window i spoke before comes up when i initially start the
application -not the download.

[newbie] mandrake 8.1 and mandrake-update

2001-12-20 Per discussione quaylar

hiho all

i just booted mandrake 8.1 again - after about 2 months of using windows2k
i felt like
giving mandrake 8.1 again a try.
when i booted up 8.1 the first time after installing i was really pleased
by the new kde 2.2 and all
the apps it came with.

just a few minutes ago i thought about applying all the security and bugfix
updates - and i tried mandrake-update.

mandrake-update, it didnt work with 7.2 and 8.0 (at least for me) - i had
thought that meanwhile mandrake
would have managed to get it working - but no.
i created a new source for the downloads - chose a server and i got a list
of all the updates that were available.
so far so good - but :

1) why the hell is the window which lists all the updates so SMALL ?
on my screen the list of all the updates is about 2cm in height - with
scrolling arrows next to it.
its not possible to resize the list - to see more packages at one time,
so there are only about 5-8 visible at a time.
this is really annoying.
2) i choose the packages that i want upgraded - and it begins to search for
the packages - after a while it replies an error
 occured while fetching package x
 a) why cant it tell WHICH error ??
 b) i made sure to use the correct server - i tried logging manually in
the server - and i checked the proper directory - i
also checked whether the regarding file was definitely on the
server - and it was !
despite of this mandrake-update isnt able to fetch the file - this SUCKS !
3) sometimes i am not able to start mandrake-update at all - it loads
partially - leaving me with a grey main-window
and its not possible to close it any more - so i have to kill it every
time by opening a console - suing to root and then
killing it by pid (if i want to kill it with the pid monitoring
program under X i certainly get u are not permitted to kill this app
 - why cant it ask for the superuser-password allowing me to kill it
out of X ?? - instead it forces me every time to open
a console and killing it as superuser - this is time-consuming,
complicated and frustrating !)

now please dont tell me things like download the rpm file manually and
install it using command line rpm
because i know how to handle rpm command line - but why use it if there is
a X-utility that does it with a
few clicks ?
i know people are proud of being able to use console - and i am too - but
if there is the possibility to safe time and make
things easier and faster - why not use it ?

another thing i hate about the desktop-linux is that there is no browser
that can view websites properly.
regardless which fonts/font-size/browser i use - i always get bad-looking
fonts - not so smooth like ms-ie shows.

has anybody of u been able to get mandrake-update working - or to get a
browser that shows smooth good looking fonts ?

dont misunderstand me - i like linux - and i am using a linux server that
handles mail-dns-samba-antivir-ftp-telnet and so on.
but this is console - and it works well...
but what does not work - in my eyes - is the X-part of linuxso - are u
experiencing the same problems i do - or is it just my lack of ability to
get things working smooth under X ?
should i use gnome rather than KDE ? - are apps working better under gnome ??
i mean - regarding desktop-functions/programs windows is far superior to
linux. i currently run win2k and it runs perfectly stable - all programs
are running without any problems - under linux i am running into endless
loops, requiring me a high amount of time to - for example - simply install
a program (everybody of u knows : dependencies that require dependencies
that requireetc.)
i can understand that this is frustrating newbies that use linux first time
- as it does me - and i am using linux now for about 1.5 years. (although i
was using more console than X)

so - please dont flame - we´re on the same side ;)
i am just really sick of non-working apps under X that *should* make life
easyier - but dont do.

all suggestions/advices/opinions are welcome ;)

dealing with this problem in version 7.1 i think)
but i could try to disable anti-aliasing - didnt find this option yet -

The fix is simply to delete the file ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals

are u sure u configured your email client under linux properly ?

do u have any firewall rules present that could prevent fetching mail ?

u could try to open a console under linux an telnet manually in to see

telnet pop.email.net 110

this will connect u to your pop server at port 110

hmmu could try to locate the script that runs behind the wizard by
searching for it in the
/etc/rc.d/ path.

as internet connection sharing is done by ipchains or iptables (as long as
u do masquerading and not caching - and i assume u use masquerading) there
should be ipchains/-tables commands in the script that sets up the internet
connection sharing.

so try to grep for all ipchains/iptables commands located in scripts in the
/etc/rc.d/ path:

grep ipchains /etc/rc.d/*
or
grep iptables /etc/rc.d/* if u use iptables.

this will give u an output for all scripts in this path that have
ipchains or iptables in it.
maybe u are able to find the responsible script this way.

this is only a guess - i really dont know what the wizard does - since i do
almost everything in console...
give it a try

check your firewall rules - try setting all policies to ACCEPT - and try

if this works - u have a firewall problem.

Hi all

I have proftpd setup at home and here at work i'd like to access it. At
home I tried it out and it works fine over the home network... using
cuteftp here at work produces the following log... basically it hangs a
while on Connecting data socket... and then says Failed to establish

I've changed the actual IPs concerned to IP addresses here... just in
case - am paranoid! :)

Thanks for any help

[newbie] linux on a Dell I 4100

2001-11-14 Per discussione quaylar

hiho ppl !

i am thinking of buying a new Dell Inspiron 4100 notebook and was wondering
whether anybody could give hints/advice regarding its compatibility with linux.

i already searched the linux-notebook.com website - but unfortunately its
rather outdated (at least regarding the Dell notebooks)
this NB has a built in 3com 56k modem and 10/100 LAN chip.
According to some deja.com posts this is a hardware modem and should
therefore work under linux.
but i am simply not sure and would be glad if anybody could post his
experience.

additionally all recommendations for linux-compatible notebooks are welcome ;)

regards and TIA,

put it in /etc/procmailrc (without the leading .)

Hi all,

This is probably a FAQ, but I can't find the answer in the
e-mails I have so far Some background is needed.

In common with quite a few people, I would expect, I'm a
long-time Windows hack trying out Linux because of Borland's
Kylix, aka Delphi for Linux. I'm starting from as near zero
knowledge of Linux as makes no difference.

Living in a very rural area of Pennsylvania, I have a choice of
exactly one cable access provider, and they're a bit paranoid, to
put it mildly. They've managed to configure their access systems
in such a way as to (deliberately!) prevent use of a router as a
hardware firewall, unless you buy their much more expensive
commercial access.

Now, when my machine is booted in Windows, I see an average of
something like 30 unauthorised access attempts a day (the
24.x.y.z IP address of most cable modems is an open invitation).
So far as Windows is concerned, I use Zone Alarm as a software
firewall, and everyone is reasonably happy (even if I'm still a
bit annoyed about having a perfectly good router sitting on my
desk doing nothing).

I have two questions.

1) Is there an equivalent to Zone Alarm for the Linux world - a
software firewall that will work out of the box?

yes there is - its called ipchains for 2.2.x kernels and iptables for 2.4.x
kernels.
ipchains/iptables is a part of linux and it offers the possibility to build
up a real packet filter firewall
by configuring a set of rules for your computer.

if u really want to understand what ipchains does and how it does - and if
u want to build up your own firewall with your
own ruleset i would suggest u reading :

1) for ipchains the IPCHAINS-HOWTO
2) for iptables : man iptables, netfilter-hacking howto, iptables-howto,
packetfilter-howto

if u just want a quick and easy firewall u can try bastille firewall or
tiny firewall (i dunno whether its the same)
u can configure it with a gui within the mandrake control center
(drakconf), theres a menu-item firewall under security.
i dont know much about it because personally i prefer to build my own
rules, but basically what it will do is, ask u a set of questions and build
a ruleset related to your answers.

search the mailing list archives for subject bastille and it should come
up with numerous postings regarding bastille firewall(its a frontend to
ipchains/iptables i think)

2) If there isn't such a firewall, I'm being swamped by the
amount of documentation that I need to read - is there a Newbie's
guide to Linux security out there somewhere that will mean that I
can block out the hackers while I'm learning the rest of the OS?

an excellent source for documentation of all kind is www.linuxdoc.org -
they offer all the howtos and also guides (check these out - theres a linux
security guide too i think)

Thanks,

[newbie] mandrake 8.1 on promise ATA100 controller

hiho ppl !

is someone out there having the same problem i have ?:

installing mandrake 8.1 on the onboard promise ATA100 controller of
motherboard ASUS A7V KT133).

i have a 30 gig IBM hd on the primary promise controller jumpered as slave
(i already tried master) and i´m getting

L 01 01 01 01 etc.

at starting of LILO...

according to the lilo users guide this would occur when the bios doesnt
recognize the drive or when theres a geometry mismatch.
so i tried setting the disk=/bios=/sectors, cylinders, heads= options in my
lilo.conf, but all to no avail
is there any special linux driver for the promise controller ? any hints ?

i would highly appreciate any help,

I have the same controller and I have had that problem. You've got two hard
drives that have been marked down as the bootable drive and I'm not just
about where LILO is installed.

For example, I had a drive that had Windoze installed on it and when I
installed LM I installed it and LILO to a different hard drive. Diskdrake
assumes you know what you're doing and isn't going to go look for other hard
drives being marked as bootable and this is what leads to the conflict you
see.

To fix it, boot into rescue mode and run fdisk on the hard drive you don't
want to be booting from and turn off the bootable partition.

u sure that that will work

if i turn off the bootable flag from my first hd (win2k running) then i
wouldnt be able to boot it ???

since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root
partition of the corresponding drive instead of the
MBR.
i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja
that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work
with the promise controller - but up to now i wasnt able to find it

The bootable flag just lets the BIOS know which hard drive to give control
to. It does not effect a partition's ability to boot an OS.

yes - and i want the bios to give control to the first hd on the via
controller -
because it holds the nt loader - which has an entry for linux (bootsect.lin
on my c: drive)

since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root
partition of the corresponding drive instead of the
  MBR.

The Win2000 NT Loader is very tenacious-- it's not going to give up control
just because you have LILO installed on another partition.

yes - i dont want it to give up control ;)
it has an entry for linux anyways - so i should but it up fine.

i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja
that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work

The driver was necessary for 2.2 kernels but the module for running the
Promise ATA100 controller is included with 2.4 kernels (including LM8.x).

yes - i wondered about that - since linux was showing up something labeled
promise controller at bootup.

meanwhile i came across this on usenet :

it seems that lilo doesnt know which drive to boot from because the bios
doesnt recognize the drive -
and thats right - bios cant recognize the drive because its hooked to the
promise controller which has its own bios...

so how can i solve this prob ?

theres one more thing i just remember :

when first installing lilo - i got the messages :

Warning : BIOS drive 0x83 may be inaccessible !

what confuses me about this is : 0x83 would be secondary slave - so it
would be my LS120 floppy disk drive.
it seems to me that lilo is trying to access the LS120 drive - when i boot
up in linux and all the 01 are appearing on the screen
the little green led on the LS120 is flashing in similar frequency the 01
are appearing.
does this look familiar to anyone ?anyone who might shed some light on
this one ?

hiho andreas

well - u mean u were able to boot into windows nt ?
but u werent able to start any applications ?

hmm - under win98 i know this problem doesnt exist because it doesnt see
the linux ext2 partitions at all.
under win2k one is able to hide the unknown partitions, thus making them
invisible to windows - so they are not occupying drive letters.

under win NT arent u able to hide the unknown partitions ?
or - assign the unknown partition another drive letter than D ?
(i assume that the unknown partition is a primary and your former D part.
is a logical drive)
so win nt re-assigns the drive letters - making the first 2 primary
partitions C and D and then following your partition with your windows nt apps.

u could also try to re-install linux - installing it *not* to a primary,

[newbie] mailserver with antivir

2001-06-06 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

i would like to use an antivir program with my email server.
has anybody of u experience with avmailgate from www.antivir.com

what i´d like to know how it works, its manual is not very good.

if anyone uses it, maybe u can explain me whether this is right or not :

1) mails are coming in (in my case via fetchmail)
2) they are handled over to antivir which is sitting on port 25
3) antivir scans all mails and forwards them to the local smtp server (i.e
postfix, sendmail etc)
4) the local smtp stores them via procmail in the corresponding mail dir..

now, what my problem is :

1) i dont want to install a smtp server, does anybody know whether antivir
can forward the mails it scanned directly to procmail ?
2) i noticed that one has to create a /usr/spool/antivir folder for the
mails, why that ?..i thought procmail would store the mails in the
default mail spool dir ? (/var/spool/mail/user in my case)

or maybe u can recomment any other scanner ?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

greetings

[newbie] pop3 server problem

2001-05-31 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

i have following problem with the pop3 server that came with mandrake 7.2
(imap package, ipop3d executable):

it always complains about a invalid format of my mailbox file.
although its a standard unix mailbox format, created by procmail which
delivers my mails into the mailbox.
if i delete all my mails out of the file, the pop is able to open the
mailbox, but as soon as any mail is stored in the mailbox, the pop server
is unable to open the box and i get above error message.

can anyone give any hints on what this might be ?, the man page of ipopd
says it is pretty much plugn play, so i dont understand why its causing
so much trouble with the mailbox.

thx for any help,

[newbie] pop3 server problem

2001-05-16 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

i am running lm 7.2 and ipop3d on my inet gateway. when i try to connect to
it via telnet to port 110 from my windows client i get this:

+OK POP3 x.localdomain v7.64 server ready
+OK User name accepted, password please
-ERR Unable to open user's INBOX

above occurs after entering the users password.

i checked /var/spool/mail/user and its set with correct permissions (owned
by the user with rw set).
i am fetching my mails via fetchmail and i filter them via procmail which
delivers them to my mailbox.

has anybody any adice on what might be going wrong here ?
is there something i have to configure for ipop3d ? ( the man page lists
absolutely no config file, in fact the man page is very short).

thanks in advance,

[newbie] various email issues

2001-05-14 Per discussione Quaylar

hiho all !

i am planning to set up my own email server, i read several howtos and man
pages but there are still some things which are not
clear to me.

first let me describe what i want to do :

1) i want to fetch email from various pop3 servers
2) spam-filter them
3) scan their attachments for viruses
4) transfer them to my windows client behind my gateway (where all this
should take place)

ad 1)

as far as i know for this to be done one needs the programm fetchmail.
now i have some questions regarding this:

a) why in the world does fetchmail want to send the emails it got from the
pop servers via sendmail and local port 25 ?
i want them to stay on the gateway in the users directory, and i dont
want them to be sent elsewhere ...
b) i saw that one can create .fetchmailrc files to poll email in certain
periods of time.
but what if i want to fetch my email via my windows client NOW and not
next time cron starts fetchmail ?
is there a way to have fetchmail see that it should fetch mail NOW ?

ad 2) i know that i can use procmail for this and what i first want to do is :
filter all spam mails with certain words in their subject.
now what i did so far is, creating a procmailrc file that
contains following entry
:0
* word to trigger filter here
/dev/null

now there are lots of words which occur in spam mail and instead of writing
such an entry for each of them---is it possible to to an OR expression in
the * section ?
just to list all words there and say : if this word occurs OR if this word
occurs OR- /dev/null

ad 3) where do i have to call the email virus scan programm - in the
procmailrc file ?.a filter that matches ALL emails and then as an
action scan them for mails ?..which expression DOES match ALL incoming
mails ?

4) i use ipop3d on the gateway to get the mails in my users mailfolder on
my windows client.
now if i telnet to port 110 of my gateway i get following after
entering the correct user/pass:

-ERR Unable to open user's INBOX

what can cause this ?.
i know the emails are there because if i check my /var/spool/mail/user file
they are all there..

and last but not least, can anybody recomment good tutorials/guides/how-tos
or other sources that cover these topics ?

thx for your efforts,

[newbie] choosing packets under 7.2

2001-03-19 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all..

i am just about installing 7.2 and theres one REALLY annoying thing going on :
whenever i come to the point of choosing which packages to install, i
choose from the main packages and
i know when counting the MBs in brackets i ALWAYS get below 1 GB.
now whatever i choose - regardless if i go back and deselect packages -
mandrake ALWAYS tells me that
it could only install 65 % of the packages i chose.
why the hell does it say so ???..i know for sure that the packages are
below 1 GB (and i do have a 1029 MB drive).
this is driving me crazy, its hell to add all the different packages i lack
later...
i first tried a text only install and there it worked without any problems !

Furthermore the text-only install doesnt provide a partition utility
whereas the gui does---why ???
i was only offered to decide between the existing partitions or the hd i
wanted to install mandrake to.
now i have 1 IDE and 1 SCSI disk, i wanted the / system to be on IDE and
/usr to be on SCSI.
but mandrake only allowed me to put the whole system EITHER on IDE or
EITHER on SCSI
( and it created the partitions itself - it didnt ask me if i wanted to
create them myself ! - btw i was in expert mode !)
this is really disappointing, those things make installing mandrake a pain !

has anyone else experienced those things ?

well.if u are the only user on your internal network and no security
concerns are against it u could allow the whole internal network
(or just one machine) to access services on your server.

i did this on my router to allow my internal network access the linux box :

ipchains -A input -s 192.168.0.0/24 (my internal net) -d 0/0 -i eth0 ( the
lan card for my internal net) -j ACCEPT

What is the ipchain command I need to allow me in again?, I also cant
ftp, access the apache website in my linux server.

And my other question is what is the difference in IPCHAINS for INPUT,
OUTPUT and FORWARD, I am confused as to the meaning of these

well..as the name says, INPUT is the chain for all packets that are
coming into your machine (regardless which interface, either from your lan
or the internet)
OUTPUT is the chain for all packets leaving your machine (to the internet
or to your lan)
and FORWARD is the chain for all packets which are just passing the server,
for example if u have a masqed machine behind your linux server, all the
packets coming from the masqed machine (destined for lets say the internet)
will traverse the FORWARD chain.
that is why u would have to have a masq target in your FORWARD chain (if u
are doing masquerading ;) )

i recommend the ipchains howto at www.linuxdoc.org , it has a very good
description of the different chains and how they are handled.

i once installed pmfirewall, i think its just a nice config utility for
ipchains.
i cant advise u how to set pmfirewall to allow ftp/telnet but i can tell u
the direct way to do it:

these commands will allow *anybody* to ftp/telnet into your machine from
the internet :

ipchains -A input -s 0/0 -d 0/0 -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT
ipchains -A input -s 0/0 -d 0/0 -p tcp --dport 20 -j ACCEPT

these 2 are for ftp (port 20 is ftp-data)

ipchains -A input -s 0/0 -d 0/0 -p tcp --dport 23 -j ACCEPT

and this is telnet, u can simply add these 2 commands to your
/etc/rc.local, however i would recommend to read the ipchains howto and
build a *custum* firewall to your needs, its important to really understand
what u are doing when building a firewall.

unfortunately i dont know what XDMCP is so i cant tell u the ipchains rule
to allow it, maybe someone else can help here.

[newbie] masq and napster

2001-03-08 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

i have set up a linux adsl router and i have enabled masq and ipchains on it.

so far i can do everything from my windows box behind it (mail/irc/web/ and
so on) except napster.

i read the napster+masq howto and i read various deja topics about this issue.
this is what i did to get it working :

1) i opened my firewall to all connections coming from port or port
8875 (the napster servers)
2) i did a portfw for ports 6699 and 6700 to my local win box.
3) forwarding is enabled (of course, otherwise i wouldnt be able to use all
the other services)

napster still remains at "geting info" state and never begins downloading.
i use napster 2.0 beta6

has anybody ideas about this ?

and one furhter question :

i just got a 512/64 adsl line, and i am using it over the linux router.
now when i am accessing websites, speed is REALLY slow, i think my earlier
isdn line was faster than this.
(i am heavily disappointed)

i tuned the win settings with the tune program from speedcorp which made it
a little faster, but it still sucks !
on the other hand i can get (at really good times, from servers in my
country) max. 50 kB/s download rate.

can anybody give an advice on how to "tune" the linux router or the win box ?

[newbie] adsl and connection loss

2001-03-06 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

i am using a alcatel 1000 adsl modem on my mandrake 7.1 linux box.
i build up my connection over pptp.
no problems establishing connection, but after an unpredictable amount of
time my connection drops.
it doesnt always happen, sometimes my machine is 3 h online, sometimes its
only 1h.
when i look at system console there are no error messages, it just seems
that the connection was shut down properly (without me causing it)

it just says :

pppd : LCP terminated by peer
   connection terminated
   connect time blah blah
   sent ...bytes, received ..bytes
   exit

i understand that the connection was dropped by my isps server but i dont
know why; i know for sure that there are no "server side" connection
timeouts from my isp.

is there an option somewhere for the pppd that configures an idle timeout ?

and what is this LCP thingy ?

thx in advance,

Go back to basics...

With your lan card you should have gotten a utility disk.

On that disk are two important programs (assuming that you are using a
10base2/10baseT card).

The first program sets up the hardware on the lan card. It allocates
IRQ's/IO, etc and permits you to test the settings.

Built into the same program or separate from it is another utility which
permits you to set up once machine as a MASTER and the other as a SLAVE for
testing purposes.

Hopefully both lan cards are identical.

Connect everything up. Boot up from a dos disk and use the LAN CARD's
utility disk.

Check the settings for conflicts. There is a self test in there too. Run it
and make sure it passes. Make sure that both cards are set to 10base2, NOT
10BaseT.

yes they are both set to use 10base2.i already used the config utils.-...

Finally use the Diagnostic utility to send packets back and forth from the
two machines.

Does this work?

If not you have a hardware problem.

If it works you have a configuration/software problem.

-JMS

hmm.unfortunately the 2 cards are not identical, but i have the config
utility for both, so i will try what u suggested.
btw. my cabling is ok, i checked the cable and the connectors/resistors
today with another network and it worked pretty fine.

[newbie] repost : lan problems

2001-03-03 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

im reposting because i still have my win-linux lan problem.

let me describe:

i have 1 win2k box and 1 mandrake box.

win2k :

1) surecom ep325 configured to utilize BNC port
2) no resource conflicts
3) LAN connection is up with 192.168.0.1/24
4) firewall is down

mandrake box:

1) 3com 3c509 : initialized - no resource conflicts - modules are loaded -
using BNC port
2) eth0 is up with 192.168.0.1/24
3) routes are set properly by linux
4) ipchains is down

the 2 boxes are connected via thin ethernet coax, cable lenght approx. 10m,
terminated at each end.
wiring and terminators are known to be ok, because switching them for new
ones didnt solve my problem.

problem : ping timeouts from win - linux and vice versa...100% packet loss

plz, i would appreciate any advice, this is driving me crazy...

hi jose,

yes u are right, it was a mistype. i would have noticed such a dumb failure
because i checked all settings approx. 100 times.

of course
linux box is at 192.168.0.1/24 and
win box is at 192.168.0.2/24

u know, after your last reply i posted that my lan was working.
i dont know why it did, but just a few days ago i tidied up all the cables
under my desk and among others i unplugged the BNC cable at both ends.

i plugged then in again, installed a 2nd nic in my linux box to connect it
to my new adsl modem, and when i rebooted my local lan was (again) gone.
i think its the same problem as it was before (still i dont know), it cant
be the 2nd nic because its recognized correctly, routes are ok and i
already established a adsl conn over it.
so whatever it is.slowly i am beginning to think it should be in
"x-files".:)

The two cancel out and you end up with a dead spot on the cable, where if
you plug something in, you get no response.

The Ethernet terminators are there to reduce or eliminate this, which is why
they are at the physical "ends" of the cable.

They are not always successful.

You may be seeing the same.

i switched terminators to no avail.

You may have a bad "T" connector as well. I've seen more bad "T" connectors
than one would expect.

Check your lan cables. Make sure that the center pin is not being pushed
into the socket when you plug it into the Ethernet card or T connector.

ah...i checked the lan cables and indeed 1 of the 2 center pins was pushed
into the socket.
i pulled it out to make sure it hits the receptacle.

and i noticed that the center pins of the 2 T connectors i was using, were
not as long as the center pins in 2 other T-connectors.
so i switched them too.
but it still doesnt work.

  This
will also cause problems. The center pin must not move so it can penetrate
the receptacle.

Since your LAN setup worked for awhile look for a physical problem of some
sort.

mhm...i too think it has to be something physical, i tink i will buy a new
cable/connectors/resistors...
maybe it helps.

[newbie] a few questions to 7.2

2001-02-20 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all !

i just decided to do a fresh install of LM 7.2, really nice - it found all
my hardware already in the installation procedure.
so far its pretty cool..
but there are a few things i would like to know :

1) how do i get rid of the graphical boot procedure ?.i would like to
have my old "terminal style" bootup back.
2) i know the config tools : printtool/setuptool/sndconfig and the various
X configs, but is (or are) there any new config tools i should have to know
about ?
3) my isdn card was properly recognized, i loaded the hisax module manually
and it went pretty fine without any failure, after editing my config files
for the isdn connection , i tried to bring up the isdn interface manually
by "ifup ippp0" and got following error :

"/dev/isdnctrl : no such device"

the point is.there is a /dev/isdnctrl file...
so whats going on here ?...do i have a broken isdn pakage ?
i know that the isdn rpms that came with 7.1 were broken.but are these
too ?
has anybody experienced the same problem ?

thx for any help...

[newbie] resource conflict with 2 nics

2001-02-17 Per discussione Quaylar

hi all.

im going to get adsl, so i installed a second nic in my server.
a surecom ep-325 pci card.
i recompiled kernel - built the modules - loaded the modules
everything went fine, upon bootup both cards (a 3c509 as ath0 and the
surecom as eth1) are recognized correctly.

eth0 (the 3com) is showing up IRQ 10
eth1 (surecom) is showing up IRQ 11

whenever i try to bring up eth0 i get a resource conflict, so i checked
/proc/interrupts and saw that eth1 was indeed using IRQ 11 whereas IRQ10
was used by my SCSI controller.

my conclusion : eth0 was using IRQ 11 before, but the surecom card (pci) is
set to use IRQ 11 only, so eth0 had no free interrupt.

my cards are initialized by the bios, so i knew there were only 2 ways:

1) set the surecom card to use another IRQ than 11
2) set the 3com card to use another one than 10

ad 1) trying the config util that came with my surecom card i had to notice
that i wasnt offered to change the irq of the card
it was fixed to 11 (why that ?.isnt it possible to change the
IRQ of PCI cards manually ? )
ad 2) i also wasnt able to change the irq of the 3com card with the config
progr.

so i decided to set "pnp os=yes" and let linux do the resource allocation.
setting 3com to IRQ 12 (free) in /etc/isapnp.conf, after a reboot i got the
same failure again, again the 3com was trying to use IRQ 10
instead of what i told it to use (12)

having a look at isapnp.conf again i noticed that linux had commented out
the line, saying IRQ 12, by itself.
the 3com card is set to PnP, may this be the reason for this behaviour ?

i dont think that it can be that difficult to solve this resource conflict,
im sure im pretty close to it, but there must be somthing im missing, can
anybody help ?

greetz,

hi all.

i have following problem:

i want to make a backup of my existing root filesystem which resides on a
500 MB IDE disk, hda
for this to work i chose a second 500 MB IDE disk and copied the whole disk
via norton ghost, hdb

then i rebooted, mountet the duplicate (hdb) and installed lilo in the MBR
of hdb by issuing "lilo -b /dev/hdb" in the etc directory of hdb.
i got : "ignoring entry boot="
and : "warning : /dev/hdb is not the first disk"

i ignored these warnings because i knew hdb would get the first disk by
plugging out the old hda and jumpering hdb to master.

so i continued :
another reboot, plugged out the old hda, re-jumpered hdb to master (which
made it hda) and (tried) to boot linux...
the only thing i got was : LI
nothing else.then my machine locked up.

has anyone any advice on this ?..what am i doing wrong ?...i cant
imagine.this HAS to worki have a 1:1 copy of the root fs, lilo.conf
is ok and lilo is in the MBR.so.i cant imagine why this doesnt

hi

linux mandrake uses the rpm-mechanism, most programs are coming in so
called "rpm-packages" which u can download from various sources from the
internet i.e. freshmeat.com (or org ?), tucows.com, linuxberg.com.
the other way is to install them from the cdrom u got with your mandrake
distro. u will find the rpm packages under /Mandrake/RPMS of your binary cd.
u have 2 ways of installing those packages :
1) do it from the command line with the command "rpm
-i(install)v(verify)h(print hashes) *.rpm"
2) do it in X enverionment (i assume u use KDE) with the program "kpackage"
if u dont have a link in your start menu, open a terminal and simply
type "kpackage"

this will open a gui for package managment, where u can see all the
installed packages on the left side, and where u can install new packages
by selecting "file/open" and then choosing the /path/*.rpm file u want to
install.

and theres the command "setuptool" which will provide a gui to configure

I need to activate IP multicast on my linux (mandrake 6.2) install.

I am reliably told I need to do the following:
 ifconfig etho multicast
route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0

However, when I try these I end up with an error "interface eth0 not found".

I'm guessing that this might be because my kernel doesnt have multicast
activated.

hmm...as far as i know..(and i am a newbie 2)if it says "eth0 not
found"then u simply have no correctly installed network card..
or.and in this case it is obvious : u didnt bring up the
interface..: "ifconfig eth0 multicast " only configures..and does
not bring up.so issue a "ifconfig etho multicast up" and have a
look.(hmm..btwi think i remember something about ifconfig
saying that it would add a "up" by default if someone forgets it.,
so...maybe u really havent installed your card right)...

but anyways.try it with "ifconfig etho multicast up" and come back
again if it doesnt work...

So:

(1) Am I along the right lines?
(2) Can I do this without re-compiling the kernel (I'm a complete newbie and
dont fancy it much)

hm...dunno thisi recompiled the kernel although i dont need
multicast..if u want to get familiar with linux and get a good working
system u will not get around this..

(3) I had a quick look at following the instructions on how to compile the
kernel, and failed very near the start because I dont have a linux directory
under /etc/src/. Does that mean that you dont get a default source?, I also
dont fancy an 18mb download from ftp.kernel.org particularly when I havent a
clue which version I need (or which version I am currently running).

u get a kernel source...but on some installs (in my case server
install) the kernel sources are not installed by default.
u will find them on your mandrake cd under
"/Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-sources*.rpm"

and u can then install them by "rpm -ivh kernel-sources*.rpm"
i think it will prompt u for unresolved dependencies...but i dont know
which exactly.simply install what it demands

hope i was able to help a little bit...;)

I just need a simple way to activate multicast, please help!

I have had no end of trouble with MandrakeUpdate freezing up everything.
I sent a note to Mandrake support, and they replied I
should install 'MandrakeUpdate-7.2-19mdk.i586.rpm' which I tried to do.

It requires 'librpmio.so.0' which I found in 'rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm'. That,
however requires 'libc.so.6(glib-2.2' which is not yet available on any
Mandrake update servers. It IS available from Red Hat and I'm wondering if I
should install that, or will it just require an endless list of dependancies.

Meanwhile, I'm stuck and can't update anything. MandrakeUpdate locks me up
solid EVERY time I attemt to inatall anything and I have no option but to
pull the big switch.

Many thanks to anyone who may be able to shed some light on this. I have
installed 7.2 Deluxe Powerpack (McMillan)

unfortunately i cant shed some light on this...i can only sayi now
have linux mandrake since version 6.2...(dunno when they implemented
mandrakeupdate), and mandrakeupdate did *never* work.it didnt freeze
my machine.it was only working endlessly..endlessly searching for
updates..so i gave up using it and now i download my updates manually
from the "updates" directory of various mandrake mirrors.

just a suggestion.;)

[newbie] upgrading from 7.1 to 7.2

2001-01-29 Per discussione Quaylar

hiho ppl.

i followed the earlier thread about the question wether 7.2 is worth
upgrading and many of u said it is.
so my question to this is :

ive made bad experiences with upgrading from 6.2 to 7.1, i had a working
install of 6.2 where everything was working (took me months !) and after
the upgrade almost nothing was working any more.all the settings gone
and nothing than problems..

so is there something i have to especially take care of when upgrading to
7.2 (from 7.1) to avoid screwing up my entire system ?...
or.has somebody of u made experiences like this ?.

greets

[newbie] disk partiton problems......

2001-01-29 Per discussione Quaylar

hi

this is a ..hmm.more general than mandrake-related problem..but
maybe someone can help me on this though:

i have 2hdd in my P200 server:

hda :500 MB : hda1 swap 64 MB
  hda2 ext2 linux extended 440 MB
  hda5 ext2 root partition
hdb: 500 MB: hdb1 500 MB /usr part.

now i got several things working on my system and i want to make a backup
of my hole system to be able to simply put out the 2x500 hdds and
put another hdd with my backup system on in.

for this reason i have one 1 GB scsi disk which i want to transfer my
existing system to.
i want sda to carry : 100 MB swap
 200 MB root
700 MB /usr (because i do not have
enough space on the IDE disk.500 MB are too less)

so i got norton ghost, created a boot disk and booted into ghost, ready to
do a partition to partiton copy of my IDE drive to the scsi drive.

problems:

1) i want to decrease the size of the root partition on the scsi drive to
200 MB (from the original 440 MB on the IDE) to get more space for
/usr, but ghost will only let me copy the existing root partition to a
part. on the scsi drive that is at least as big as the original.
so my 1st problem is how to manage to decrease root partition from 440 MB
to 200 MB..because there are only 90 MB actually used from the 440.

2) i already tried to leave the root partition untouched, copying it with
the full 440 MB, just to get things working for now, everything seemed to
work ok, i rebooted with my normal linux system on the IDE drive, mounted
the scsi root and edited lilo.conf to contain :

boot=dev/sda (i have a linux standalone, so i want to use the MBR for LILO)
and i set the pathnames for the rootpart. accordingly to /dev/sda5

then i issued a : lilo -C lilo.conf -b /dev/sda from the command line in
the /mnt/sda/etc/ directory to install LILO in the MBR of the scsi disk. i
also modified fstab to contain the valid drive names.

then i rebooted, set my bios to boot from scsi ( i made sure that my scsi
disk is ID0, since i found postings on deja stating that u can only boot
from ID0 scsi)
and got following from LILO :

LI

nothing more..then my machine hangs..

i tried to go the other way, installing LILO in the root part. and setting
the bootable flag with fdiskno change.
LILO just seems to be unable to start from the scsi disk..

has anyone any hints on this ?..

okay, well heres the first problem. I dont even have a network card!
I wasnt aware that eth0 was relating to a network card.

Do I need a network card to activate multicast?

Basically, this is single installation of linux and I'm doing some Java
development
that requires multicast IP to be activated. I dont connect to a network
(and dont want to)
I just want to activate multicast.

any ideas?

following is a short cut from the multicast howto
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Multicast-HOWTO.html):

If you want just to send and receive, you must say yes to "IP:
multicasting" when configuring your kernel. If you also want your Linux box
to act as a multicast router (mrouter) you also need to enable multicast
routing in the kernel by selecting "IP: forwarding/gatewaying", "IP:
multicast routing" and "IP: tunneling", the latter because new versions of
mrouted relay on IP tunneling to send multicast datagrams encapsulated into
unicast ones. This is necessary when establishing tunnels between multicast
hosts separated by unicast-only networks and routers. (The mrouted is a
daemon that implements the multicast routing algorithm -the routing policy-
and instructs the kernel on how to route multicast datagrams).
Some kernel versions label multicast routing as "EXPERIMENTAL", so you
should enable "Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers" in
the "Code maturity level options" section.

for details check out the complete howto @ provided url.
maybe this gets u on the right way..;)

anyways..i dont understand what sense it makes to activate multicast
without a network card..
