Good point. I agree that it's a bit harsh, but i think a stop less would have left it underexposed. However, a diffuser would have helped soften it. But when shooting Grace outside on the playground, I've found that for most shots, a diffuser kills too much of the fill light, so I don't use one. For this shot, I think it would have been a plus. Re: PESO -- Swimming Basen
To give Mike a little room for his statement, I had no way of knowing that, given the number of languages in the world. In this case, I have no way of knowing it's meaning in the example shown. Is this an indoor swimming pool? Rarely called a basin in this part of the world, but a pool. In my life, I have seen open outdoors areas like the ones originally shown in the photo referred to as basins. Even a boat docking area on San Francisco Bay. And the bowls formed by the area between mountains. #3 definition in the dictionary is a natural depression in the earths surface, typically filled with water #1 is for washing your hands and face attached to the wall. #2 is a wide open round container, usually holding liquid. Re: [All countries ] Street shooting and Image use, (legal/rights) influence
I caught a bit of an interview on NPR's Fresh AIr show today about privacy rights. Two random thoughts: 1. The interviewee commented that Europe was much more aggressive about protecting the rights of the person to their own image, where the US is more laissez-faire. (Ironic that it takes a French word to express a core American value.) 2. The guest the got going on about Google street view and it struck me that this was one extreme of street photography - no artistic merit but just taking shots of every street, everywhere. I said they were random. Mark C. This has been done in a few other parts of the country as well the most famous being the Central Otago Rail Trail which is about 150km long. We went over to Little River for the weekend and while Janet was busy with a small conference on Saturday afternoon, I got on my bike and did the rail trail as far as Motukarara. The trail does go further than this but it departs from the original railway line at that point, and that's as far as I'd planned to go. It will eventually reach the outer Christchurch suburb of Hornby, where the railway used to end. http://www.multi.net.nz/rail-trail/ These are all cellphone pics which I struggled to take. It's an easy track with no hills and it seems to be well looked after and there's lots of birdlife at this time of year. The only downside is that it's very exposed to the weather. I rode it on a hot day and the wind came up while I was out there so I had a tough head wind all the way back. OT -- To other Dropbox users. New share option breaks HTML galleries.
The dropbox boys have removed Get Public Link and replaced it with a new and improved Get Shareable Link command. This does two things, it gives a Tiny URL like address, but when you click on that link it displays the HTML code of your web page, and asks if you want to download it, rather than allowing the browser to display the page. I find this to be very annoying. I've left a message on their forum explaining the problem and asking for a workaround or fix. I have no idea if they'll even respond. However if more of us complain perhaps there's a better chance that they'll take notice and do something about it. -- Don't lose heart! OT: Back from Italy
For those who even noticed - I'm back! Had a fantastic time in Italy, only three days of rain out of 26 there. Met up with Dario, who went out of his way to rendezvous with me when I was utterly unable to find the arranged meeting-point, then very kindly took us meet with his family at their home, and treated us (four visitors altogether) to local food and wine, then gave gifts to all of us. Can't emphasise enough what a gentleman he is and what a pleasure it was to meet him and his family. Over 1400 images to go through now, may be able to post some in the next few days, but work calls, of course. Limited Pentax content - my *ist-D worked flawlessly throughout, apart from one night after getting soaked in Venice, Jan's S1 very capable and no issues at all. Saw mainly, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus in use. Only one other Pentax, a K1000. Also a Rolleiflex, Canon T1 and an Olympus OM - one of each. Re: PESO: Watching TV
Hi Dan: I love it! You caught your dog just at the right moment--well, actually, you caught both dogs just at the right moment. The only comment I would make is that the cropping looks a bit tight to my eye especially on the right--that is, the lines of the edge of the tv on the far right--that long triangle of brown and the top of the tv. But this is a minor nit compared to the overall subject, expression, and juxtaposition, which are great! Cheers, Christine On Nov 27, 2011, at 8:57 PM, Daniel J. From what I can gather it's only a problem when using a web browser, (which is unfortunately what I use from my laptop), or the latest version. Which you may not have downloaded. The version I have running on my desktop has problems with context menus on that machine, but I attribute that to it's Ancient operating system, (Win2K).
