[PLUG] GNOME lanaguage-selector: filing a PR or bug
Hi, In my Ui Text research, I've been looking through the UI Text for the language-selector. The popups are filled with walls of text, which I think can be simplified. (The walls of text remind me of the BSOD.) I've tried looking for a GH repo through GNOME, specifically https://gi t.gnome.org/browse/ I've tried looking through the GNOME bugzilla without success. Someone from China has forked the language-selector-im-config repo in GitHub, but without docs or any link back to GNOME. Anyone here know more about contributing to GNOME, or the specifc project associated with language-selector-gnome (or language-selector- common)? It sorta reminds me of the history of how Linus got started, based on his discussions with Andy Tannebaum. But as strongly as they disagreed w/r/t the right kind of kernel, their disagreements were on topic for Linux/Unix. Today, Linus is known as a benevolent dictator w/r/t Linux development. Thus, I would not object to a list where there is a benevolent dictator(s) who can gently keep us nudged back onto topic. But as such, that benevolent dictator needs the authority to enforce community standards. And in our free marketplace of ideas, there's always another group available for that rare user who might get knocked off here or there. And there's always another chance for such users to find some maturity. In fact, this group is the most hands-off group that I've seen w/r/t moderation. I know the Ubuntu lists have some more well defined and enforced community standards. Folks, Every now and then, Firefox seems impossible to handle -- I see a thick vertical black bar (approx 2 in a 12 wide screen) in the left hand side of the screen, and Firefox windows become almost impossible to read. When I switch into a terminal and run the top command, the number one user is Xorg, using like 80+% of the CPU. (That's always seemed odd on an i7 laptop, but I think that's a different issue.) It is followed closely by Firefox at about 10% of CPU. After a few minutes, the problem dissipates, the black bar disappears, and I'm able to use Firefox again. Thanks, Bruce ___ PLUG mailing list PLUG@lists.pdxlinux.org http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug You don't need to reinstall, nor touch the mbr. The beauty of grub is that the MBR looks at that file. Change the file and your boot should work. The trick is determining where the partitions are and setting the locations in grub.cfg appropriately. ___ PLUG mailing list PLUG@lists.pdxlinux.org http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug The other trick is determining which grub.cfg the MBR is reading! ___ PLUG mailing list PLUG@lists.pdxlinux.org http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug Well, I know a little more than I did...Grub was installed to the MBR of the memory stick that held the Debian install iso. Once up and running I had more issues than Grub. More on that with a new topic, maybe. This may be as far as I get to play with this problem. A simple reinstall may be the easiest fix for me. I just wanted to see and tinker with Debian. I assume you figured out how to use grub-install to get the GRUB pointer into the MBR of the appropriate physical drive? /home directory issues may keep me from mixing Fedora and Debian. I have RHEL 6 and Ubuntu Lucid on the same laptop, sharing the same /home directory. The key for me was to set up all UIDs/GIDs in the RHEL database starting with 1000. I boot into either, and can still use my /home configured tools (e.g. browser, PIM, e-mail, etc) in the same way on both systems. FWIW, SonicWall claims they can decrypt/re-encrypt payloads on the fly, whatever that means. I presume if an encrypted payload can be read in a browser, it can be read by some content filter, presumably with headers at OSI level 7 or something more complex related to the actual payload. If something happens to SL, I would rather not have RHEL as the only practical alternative. I use Centos 5 at work. We have a mix of it RHEL5 and Oracle Unbrakable Linux 5. Most of the noise on the Centos ML is due to the lateness of release Centos 6. I gather CentOS-6 is close. [PLUG] so-called next generation firewalls
Folks, I keep reading about Next generation firewalls that filter different Web services that go through standard Web ports, e.g. SonicWall, PaloAlto, etc. These are firewalls that enable fine-grained blocking of things like specific Facebook games, without blocking the rest of Facebook, through port 80/443. I can't find info on equivalent open source solutions, and was hoping that someone here could point me to such resources, if they exist. Ideally, it'd be something that could be configured on a regular Linux gateway, and not some high price dedicated piece of hardware. Folks, I've been trying to get some Windows-only test software working on RHEL 6 for a client, but it borks out with an OLE Error 80040514 Can't get them onto Linux test software due to contracts. What I see online suggests that if I know what DLLs that program uses, I can get winetricks to load them (or at least clones) with WINE to address the error. What I don't know is how to figure out what DLLs are used by this Windows piece of (@!#t) software. Or perhaps there's some standard setting with winetricks that can help.
