[PLUG] Thanks for listening tonight!

Hi,

I wanted to thank everyone who listened to me this evening. You laughed
when I hoped, you were attentive, you peppered me with great

You've given me the confidence to represent you and Portland (etc) at

At the risk of Michael asking me "when", let me say, I hope to speak to

[PLUG] GNOME lanaguage-selector: filing a PR or bug

2017-01-14 Thread MJang
Hi,

In my Ui Text research, I've been looking through the UI Text for the
language-selector. The popups are filled with walls of text, which I
think can be simplified.

(The walls of text remind me of the BSOD.)

I've tried looking for a GH repo through GNOME, specifically https://gi
t.gnome.org/browse/

I've tried looking through the GNOME bugzilla without success.

Someone from China has forked the language-selector-im-config repo in
GitHub, but without docs or any link back to GNOME.

Anyone here know more about contributing to GNOME, or the specifc
project associated with language-selector-gnome (or language-selector-
common)?

(Complaint: It should not be this difficult to figure out how to
contribute to an open source project. GitHub has made it easier for so
many other open source projects.)

Thanks,
Mike

I think multi-factor hardware authentication falls into the category
known as device fingerprinting.

One example, based on the company I work for, is documented here:
http://openam.forgerock.org/openam-documentation/openam-doc-source/doc/admin-guide/index.html#device-id-match-hints

Essentially, an auth system collects hardware-based info such as screen
resolution, and assigns points on a customizable scale. The format can
be set up in a fashion similar to Linux Pluggable Authentication
Modules.

Depending on timing, I might be able to help out with such a talk.

Hi,

You could always try connecting via the command line. I'm not sure of
the current state of Ubuntu Samba package names, but generally, commands

You should also be able to browse Samba shares with commands like

The intermittent nature of the problem makes me wonder if there are

Based on the messages that follow, does /var/lib/samba/usershares/public
exist -- if so, what are the permissions (and one thing I'm not up to
speed on is what AppArmor might do to protect such files, in a fashion
similar to SELinux.

In log.smbd there are a lot of lines complaining about files or
 directories not existing:

Ubuntu usually does an excellent job making sure that executables in
their packages point to existing files/directories of the right sort,
(e.g. socket)

Then there are a number of entries complaining about missing files for
individual machines. These are the files I saw in /var/log/samba, but it
looks like samba is expecting to find them in /usr/local/samba/var. I
looked in usr/local, but there is no samba directory. If I simply
created those directories might that fix something? Would it hurt
 anything to try that?

If logs are complaining about missing files, I wonder -- have you
installed /compiled Samba components from different sources, such as
samba.org?

In any case, I might also create expected files and directories with
touch and mkdir -- but the right way might be to uninstall --all--
Samba-related packages, make sure that all related files are moved, and
reinstall Samba client and server packages.

[PLUG] Possible Technical Writer Internship

2014-02-23 Thread MJang
Hi,

First, this is not official, and does not constitute a commitment of any
sort.

I'd like some help finding technical writer intern candidates. The right
candidate would be as tech savvy as a Java developer (Linux skills also
prized), as that person would create documentation to help other Java
developers understand custom RESTful interfaces.(Yes, it would be a paid
position, for the period of the internship.)

(Yes, I've read and will fill out the form listed at
http://www.pdx.edu/careers/internships-resources-posting-instructions )

With the relationship between PLUG and PSU (or perhaps just some members
who work / study at PSU), I'm hoping that someone here can help me
figure out the internship process at PSU.(for example, is there a CS
prof that I should contact?)

Of course, if there is a current college junior or senior on this list

I appreciate the interest that people here are showing in the “entry-level” Red

security with Role-based Access Control configuration files in /etc/

Two suggestions --

1) If you're getting Internet access through the router, run a

The gateway for the default route should match the IP address of the
router. It isn't necessarily 192.168.2.1

You should be able to access the router admin interface through the

2) Reset the router. There's usually some way, perhaps with a paper

Folks,

https://plus.google.com/04121194250082892/posts/aCiB7kTLXTh

So Fedora 18 seems to be the worst Red Hat distro I've ever seen.

The new installer is unusable, the updater is buggy. When you get it
running the default desktop has been eviscerated to the point of being
slightly less useful than a chocolate teapot, and instead of fixing the
bugs in it they've added more.

And to add a bit to the previous discussion of Linus:

I'm leaving the Linux world and Intel for a bit for family reasons. I'm

I gather from a couple of other sources that the style depicted in the

over 20 years.

It's certainly not a style associated with corporate America, or local

reading the Tannebaum-Torvalds debate (where Andy Tannebaum in '92 said

It suggests that people who want to help maintain the kernel need a

that rather than the command line might well be the solution.

One option w/o the GUI -- the virt-install command. Try something like

# virt-install --cdrom win7.iso --name=test.com --ram=768
--disk=/var/lib/libvirt/images/abc.img,size=10

For a 10GB virtual hard drive. The virt-install command is pretty
forgiving; if you get some things right, it prompts for needed info.

If you do choose to go with the Virtual Machine Manager GUI -- in RHEL
6, the RPM is named virt-manager. Hopefully Slack uses something
similar.

The Red Hat pre-qual tests bear very little resemblance to the actual

The questions on the pre-qual tests are multiple choice and fairly
simple for most Linux users with at least a little experience. (At the
moment, the pre-qual tests are 404'ed, so that might be changing.)

The questions on the actual Red Hat exams are lab-based, specifying what
you might configure on a live system. While the NDA prohibits
describing specific tasks, the published objectives suggest that it's
done with SELinux enabled in enforcing (or permissive) mode. Big
difference.

[PLUG] Linux equivalent to Camtasia

2011-11-04 Thread MJang
Folks,

(note -- this is a resend' after I realized that PLUG was down for a
bit. Forgive me if the message appears twice.)

Just wondering if there's a Linux equivalent to Camtasia, for recording
lecture-like demos. I'd like to be able to switch between OOo Impress
presentations and active views of the command line / other admin tools.
If it matters, I think my publisher would be looking for AVI files.

I've heard xvidtune can do such, but don't see any clues from the man
page (or my searches), except some references that suggest that it would
be too crude for production.

All I can find for Camstudio are Win .exe files.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

This would have interesting evangelistic consequences for
 both Linux and OpenEMR.

To do this properly, the patient data portions of the live
CD should be password encrypted. Also, it would be nice
to have a very fast CD writer, with some kind of automagic
labelling system so that the CD gets a readable label before
it is handled by people (we don't want to accidentally swap
the CDs going to two different patients).

Sounds excellent. From your verbiage, it sounds like you're up to speed
on HIPPA and related privacy regulations. I assume they don't regulate
in this kind of detail (but don't know). Assuming you have the
flexibility available, have you considered using USB keys -- they could
be set up with read/only (for the Live CD) and read/write partitions
(for patient data). I assume such rw partitions can be LUKS encrypted.

Drawbacks -- that means you wouldn't have access to the CD labelers that
laser the label right on top of the media, and USB keys are more
expensive.

This limit applies to all of your windows (not just terminal emulators)

Until somewhat recently, MAXCLIENTS=256 was compiled into Xorg, then it

Interesting stuff. In Solaris 11 early adapter, /usr/include/xorg/misc.h

An XTerm session uses a pts device (in /dev/pts). I don't know of a limit

Linux/Unix.

Today, Linus is known as a benevolent dictator w/r/t Linux

benevolent dictator(s) who can gently keep us nudged back onto topic.
But as such, that benevolent dictator needs the authority to enforce
community standards.

And in our free marketplace of ideas, there's always another group
available for that rare user who might get knocked off here or there.
And there's always another chance for such users to find some maturity.

In fact, this group is the most hands-off group that I've seen w/r/t

He also asks a --lot-- of questions of this board. I don't think he's
ever offered technical help to anyone on this board. He takes, and does
not give back.

I suggest that anyone who answers his technical questions is
inadvertently encouraging people who just take from a community, along
with his general nasty demeanor. In my years here, I remember him saying
thank you just once.

This thread, and his responses, is an overreaction about one person who
honored his wife in a very American way. Keith's reference to his wife
as a God who must be obeyed is a common American male view of
marriage. If you've ever seen her picture on Keith's laptop, it's clear
that he idolizes her. Keith has nothing to apologize for, and can be
proud of the way he honors his marriage, and his work to make his wife's
home office more efficient with Asterisk.

The reacting individual in question has apparently been haunting this

http://lists.pdxlinux.org/pipermail/plug/2004-April/031297.html . So
he's apparently not going to stop soon.

I understand people who have blacklisted him into their spam filters. I
have now done so reluctantly. It is in essence changing the channel
when he speaks. I am reluctant to do so -- as it risks ceding the tone
of this list to people like him.

Given his point of view, it's astonishing that he would use an operating
system created by an atheist. When Keith suggested that we nominate
Linus for the Nobel Peace Prize, this was his reaction:

http://lists.pdxlinux.org/pipermail/plug/2009-November/066037.html

The nobel peace prize should not go to an atheist period.

useful.

If anyone has any thoughts about Solaris long term v. Linux, I'd also be
interested in that. Seems to me that Linux has some work to do to get to
Solaris levels in some areas like trusted extensions, self-healing,
etc.

Five or ten years ago, I would have thought that Linux would have left
Solaris in the dust by now. And yet we're about to see a completely new
Solaris release (the speculation I've heard is Solaris 11 by
11/11/11).

If people feel this is more appropriate for plug-talk, I'll willingly
move this discussion there.

Thanks,
Mike

The Free Rail Zone extends to the Lloyd Center, and a couple stops
later you're at the Convention Center. The Lloyd Center is free parking
and there's no way for them to know that you're not shopping.

The couple of times I tried that (parking in the lot by the movieplex
just south of the main Lloyd Center building), someone actually drove
around and checked, asked me as I got out of my car.

If they've stopped checking, that's helpful info.

[PLUG] Firefox and Xorg

2011-07-03 Thread MJang
Folks,

Every now and then, Firefox seems impossible to handle -- I see a thick
vertical black bar (approx 2 in a 12 wide screen) in the left hand
side of the screen, and Firefox windows become almost impossible to
read.

When I switch into a terminal and run the top command, the number one
user is Xorg, using like 80+% of the CPU. (That's always seemed odd on
an i7 laptop, but I think that's a different issue.) It is followed
closely by Firefox at about 10% of CPU.

After a few minutes, the problem dissipates, the black bar disappears,
and I'm able to use Firefox again. My wild guess is that it might be
java related, as it happens only on certain websites, but don't know.

While this is just an annoyance on my (i7, T410, 8GB) RHEL 6 laptop
(haven't seen this in Ubuntu 10.04, but use that less frequently), I
would appreciate some insight, if available.

Is there a way to do that without going through the list one by one and

I have not yet done the enough research to find the total answer for the

process of booting from a live cd and reinstalling grub2. I suppose I
could just update the Fedora grub and Debian would then be listed...

Looks like usermod and groupmod might be the way to go...may have to fix
something outside of the /home at some point.

Yup, that's the start of my approach. I then proceeded to chown -R
1000.1000 on my home directory. If you have other regular user owned
files, I suppose some sort of find exec command combo would take care of
that.

As for GRUB, your description is why I found it simpler to stick with
GRUB 0.97 (what's on RHEL 6, and what I think is still the default for
Fedora).

Windows piece of (@!#t) software. Or perhaps there's some standard
setting with winetricks that can help.

Thanks,
Mike

One place that VirtualBox seems to beat KVM (as of when I was
researching 6 months ago) and that was USB pass-through.

Yup, KVM still seems to be a work in progress. For example, KVM uses USB
1.1 for a touchpad passthrough for me.

In addition, it's a bit weird to have to use virsh destroy servername
(instead of a simple shutdown).

Nevertheless, I feel more confident knowing that KVM (with libvirt
stuff) is native to various Linux distros, and doesn't have the
weirdness of that specialized Xen kernel.

 +1

+1 more

With KVM, it's so convenient to be able to start a VM from the command
line, e.g. the following boots the noted system --

virsh start server1.example.com

When networking is configured to start normally, you can connect to it
with SSH like any other remote system.

[PLUG] System Fixed: Re: Looks like the Website's been cracked

Since you are getting persistent Chinese issues it seems like it could be a
cookies problem, or something along those lines.

FWIW, I run Firefox in a pretty cookie-free mode, having to re-enter
usernames and passwords every time.

I think the reload of jre helped. Haven't seen the Chinese in the banner
ads since I uninstalled all jre, and reinstalled the Oracle(was Sun) RPM
fresh.

[PLUG] Backup Alternative Meeting Site

2011-04-16 Thread MJang
Folks,

The other day, I was talking to Gary Schleinkofer, the Networking
Academy Coordinator at PCC. He asked me to pass along his offer to use
PCC classroom facilities for future PLUG meetings (SE Center or Willow
Creek, if I understood him correctly)

I told him that we have established sites for our meetings, but have had
to change venues in the past. But if things change in the future, PCC is
a possible alternate location.

Thanks,
Mike
