Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Smart Mix plugin

2013-01-03 Thread Michael Herger

1) Is there a way to know which songs in your collection (I have around
8+ local songs) can be used / are recognized by EchoNest or not?

The plugin actually does this task to get rid of removed tracks. But to
protect users from the rate limit the process is seriously throttled
(max. 6 requests/min per user) in a background task.

Ok, next release will log missing tracks to a smartmix-missing.log file
(linked from the plugin's settings page).

Turns out to be quite useful. And frustrating to see how many tracks are
not recognized. There definitely is a pattern: any kind of addition to a
track or artist name like feat. somone else, (part x) etc. is prone to
failure. Don't know whether I bother enough to modify my tags to work
around this though...

Excellent! I look forward to the bug-fix that will allow me to use your
plug-in with Rhapsody.

0.95 is on its way to your LMS. Please give it another try!

- should fix issue mixing Rhapsody/Napster content
- added button to reset default recipes to their factory values
- added support for play counts and ratings: if respective values are
available in LMS, they're submitted to TEN to further tweak the mixes.
Please note that these numbers are _not_ updated between scans.
- added a log of tracks which are not recognized by the Echo Nest (can be
found in the web UI, or in the LMS log folder)
- the blender should now be pre-configured with all the music services you
are using (see the bucket field)

Once after every rescan, yes. And when you play a dynamic mix. I know this
is not accurate. But then I assume it's only a small part of their mixing
algorithm.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Spotifys Complete Collection - possible?

2013-01-03 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

Spotify has this very cool addon called The Complete Collection, which
essentially is complete CD-booklets browsable (and of course playable)
through their client. Something like this would be infinitely cool and
useful to have in the Squeezebox-system. I couldnt find any info, but
I'm guessing Spotify has an agreement with the rightholders - and thus
it would not be straightforward to adapt, but is there any info out
there? Could something similar be achieved? How exactly does Spotify
obtain rights and access to the booklets?

The closest to date are the excelent albumreview/bio-plugins from
mherger.

Regards.

Sorry, my mistake, I missed the word between in your original sentence
and read after for some reason.

TrackStat will generate a changedstatistic CLI notification when a
play count is changed and a changedrating CLI notification when a
rating is changed if you like to refresh them between scans. These
notifications will of course only be issued when TrackStat is used, but
that's probably good enough because I only think ratings are changed
between scans if TrackStat is used.

Regarding rescans, is a full rescan required or is it enough to trigger
a new/changed rescan ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Spotifys Complete Collection - possible?

2013-01-03 Thread erland

Unfortunately the music industry hasn't understood that things like this
would get us to buy more music not less, so they tend to charge anyone
that want to show information like this a lot so it's almost impossible
to do without some kind of commercial agreement or violating the
licenses/copyrights and scraping their web sites for the information.
Things would be a lot easier if they focused at selling their music and
offered all possible information to third parties to reasonable fees to
get help to accomplish that. I'm not sure if 'The Complete Collection'
(http://www.sosoactive.com/the-complete-collection-spotify-app-review/)
app is provided by Spotify itself or if it's provided by some third
party. Spotify apps like this is only available through the computer
Spotify client, it's not even available on their iPad client, so it's
not accessible through the Spotify API which the Squeezebox Spotify
plugins uses.

The best information source for something like this would probably be
allmusic.com, but unfortunately their license agreements is totally off
the charts if you want to do something in a small company or even worse
if you like to do something for free. It's probably possible for
Logitech to do something but I think it's unlikely since they seem to be
focused more at simple radio listeners than music enthusiasts with their
new UE products.

The original plan with the 'SMD' (http://socialmusicdiscovery.org)
project was to accomplish something like this but unfortunately our
progress during the last year has been pretty slow due to lack of spare
time and lack of development resources. I think the closest you can get
on the Squeezebox today, except for those you mentioned, is probably the
commercial 'MUSO' (http://klarita.net/muso.html) Windows application.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2013-01-03 Thread MDE

I have just been spending a bit more time getting to learn how to use
Muso. For classical music fans, it really is the best (Windows) software
I've seen. For the first time in a long time, a piece of software made
me laugh (with joy) when I discovered the group tracks feature. Having
ripped a load of CD's and used the name of the work as part of the title
of each track, this now gives me a great display of the album. In
addition, for multi-CD sets, I have now worked out how to group the CD's
into one album, so now I can see works grouped within CDs within albums.
Now the display looks just like it is on the CD insert (you would have
thought this would be an obvious requirement, but most software only
contemplates tracks within (single CD) albums!). Hurrah! So happy, I
have whizzed off my 20 Euros straight away. Just one question relating
to this: how are the track groups stored? I assume that the original
music file and LMS db are unchanged and that Muso holds some meta-data
somewhere, in which case is there a risk of losing it on clearing and
re-loading the database (I have had to do this once as it seemed to fail
to pick up some changes in the normal LMS sync)? Also, once the software
is in a reasonably mature state, perhaps a little more user
documentation would help people get the best out of it quicker?
Many thanks.

Indeed, the CD insert appearance was what I was going for, with tracks
grouped by work (via Group Heading) with a nice title above, and the
track-listing also divided by disks if the meta-data includes this. If
you input Group Header in Muso it doesn't get stored anywhere else (in
track tags or pushed to LMS) so you do run the risk of losing this
metadata if you are prone to clearing your database regularly. For me my
muso database IS my master though so I never do this - the LMS database
is secondary (I'm much more likely to clear this). However, the Group
Heading CAN be fed from any custom tag on an LMS synch, so you can adopt
the approach of defining these in your track's embedded tags,
configuring them in the LMS custom tag plugin and pulling these across
to Muso (into Group Heading). If there was a standard embedded tag ID
for this I could also read it from a file-scan, but this isn't there
yet.

I do think we need to start a wiki on muso - anyone know how/where to
set up a free one? I'd start it, but would allow contributions from key
users also.

I have mapped my Opus custom tag to groupheading and that works fine,
except that, because each of my tracks is structured like this - Opus :
Movement, Muso recognises Opus as the group heading and correctly
removes it from the title, but it leaves the colon mark at the beginning
of the title (movement). If I set the groupheading within Muso rather
than mapping it , then the colon disappears and everything looks OK.
Another slight niggle is that the group heading doesn't seem to appear
in the edit tracks listing. My Opus field is listed, but some way off to
the right and there is no way I can see of re-ordering the columns.

 spotifyd typically uses around 40-50% of the memory of the 128 Kb on the
 Goflex net and that seems to be a lot?

Looking back in the thread, it seems that others have reported similar
behavior before. For instance, here:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?79706-Announce-Spotify-Premium-Plugin-(Beta)p=726857viewfull=1#post726857
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?79706-Announce-Spotify-Premium-Plugin-(Beta)p=719685highlight=#post719685

It seems very reproducible looking at

Rihanna - Top 10 Tracks

I just reproduced on my Pi that was installed from scratch using the
latest squeezeplug v 6, LMS version 7.7.2 and spotifyd version 2.2.10.

Having looked at it earlier: did you ever come to the bottom of this
issue? Or is it just the process of finding top 10 that takes some
time so it times out? Does it receive a lot of data since it uses a
considerable amount of memory and CPU?

I believe this is probably due to the way it is implemented at present
and the api calls used - essentially it gets all artist tracks and then
sorts them at the last minute. I don't have the ability to just ask for
just the top tracks from spotify with the api version I am using. This
means it probably quite a bit of work to do and hence high cpu impact.
I'll put it on the list to look at..

2013-01-03 Thread slartibartfast

I have to say this is an excellent replacement for MusicIP particularly
since MusicIP doesn't work on my squeezeplug. Only two things bother me
at the moment.
Firstly the profile export always seems to end prematurely missing about
2000 tracks out of 24000. This is accompanied by a message that the scan
has ended unexpectedly.
Secondly every new and changed scan seems to perform a full profile
export of every track and not just the new and changed tracks. This adds
more than an hour to every scan on my server.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Smart Mix plugin

2013-01-03 Thread Roland0

First of all, thanks for releasing this plugin. I've been developing a
plugin for integrating EchoNest myself, but with a rather different
approach (focusing on catalog radio playlists, and using taste profiles
as seeds), so it will be interesting to compare the results.

A couple of points:

- On both of the exports I ran (one with 0.94, the other 0.96), I got
this error at the end:

Code:

  [13-01-03 20:14:22.7114] Plugins::SmartMix::API::_call (216) Async API call:
GET
http://developer.echonest.com/api/v4/catalog/read?id=results=100start=53400api_key=*
  [13-01-03 20:14:22.9586] Plugins::SmartMix::API::__ANON__ (225) do {
  my $a = bless([
  sub { ??? },
  'fix',
  { params = {}, timeout = 15 },
  GET,

http://developer.echonest.com/api/v4/catalog/read?id=results=100start=53400api_key=*;,
  400 Bad Request,
  undef,
  undef,
  undef,
  undef,
  undef,
  undef,
  ], Slim::Networking::SimpleAsyncHTTP);
  $a-[1] = $a-[0];
  ($a, 400 Bad Request);
  }

Since my collection is 6 tracks, I'm not sure if this was finished
sucessfully - maybe the same issue reported by slartibartfast.

- When trying a mix on a song which is not known to EN, you simply get a
Failed to create playlist

Code:

  [13-01-02 22:15:20.8802] Plugins::SmartMix::Plugin::_createMixCb (415) {
  _smartmix_args = {
  bucket  = [id:XXX],
  limit   = true,
  song_id = XXX:song:0f344abbee66930e8236dcb140b1c6ed,
  type= song-radio,
  },
  response = {
  status = {
  code= 5,
  message = The Identifier specified does not exist,
  version = 4.2,
  },
  },
  }

Maybe you could add a more specific message for the user - the
underlying issue is probably hard to fix.

- Other ideas

- Ratings seem to currently make very little difference with the
selection (I get loads of one or two star tracks). Using the
dynamic/feedback API call seems to have a bigger influence: My plugin
submits the rating when the song is played, which results in a rule for
the current session

Code:

  'rule' = 'Prefer songs similar to: SOKJCNR12A8C13A111, SOENNGJ12A6D4FB8D7,
SODTHJI1315CD46B72, SOKHBHP12A6D4FB8F0, SOCZSJM1312A8A7824, SOHNVZE131343A36DF,
SOENNSH13600EB08CD, SODSUVU130516E1FC7, SOBJVDD12A8C13D983, SOECSEM130516E1A36,
SOQYKIU1311AFEC728, SOELTLN1313439E169, SOWBIYL12A6D4FB8D2'

(SOKJCNR12A8C13A111 etc. being song identifiers for highly-rated songs.
Haven't had time to look what the SmartMix session rules look like,
might be interesting)
This seems to gradually steer the playlist into the right direction
(additionally, you can configure my plugin to reject low rated songs).
Rating songs for the current session using dynamic/feedback is simple,
it does, however, result in additional API calls, which brings me to the
next point

- API call restrictions / call rate: This is rather annoying (although
it has gotten a lot better in the past months). One way to improve this
would be to let users optionally use their own API key (which is free to
get providing only minimal information to EchoNest), then the
restriction (i.e. 120 calls/min) is for each installation, not for all
of them. Additionally, it seems there is a limit of 1000 taste profiles/
non-commercial key, so the 1001st user of the plugin will be out of
luck...

- Steering the playlist using dynamic/feedback also lets you
ban/favorite songs/artists - quite a nice feature

- For my collection, the recognition rate is about 30%, even though it's
quite well tagged (it contains mainly non-mainstream music, though). One
thing I noticed when experimenting with my plugin was that the
recognition rate of songs really suffers from spelling differences for
artists (is it A Silver Mount Zion/A Silver Mt Zion/A Silver Mt.
Zion/Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra ? what about
PJ.Harvey/P.J.Harvey/P.J. Harvey?). In order to improve this, one could
add an option to rename artists before the information is sent to EN.

Hmmm, spoke too soon. Playing fine and no errors when scanning, but it
seems like most mixes I start from a song (or from one of the default
mixes, e.g., SMOOTH) seem to play a dozen or so songs and then the
playlists repeat themselves. REPEAT is not turned on anywhere. I'm
creating mixes from my own library only. I notice that 11,252 of the
songs show up as unrecognized tracks according to the smartmix plugin
information. But that still leaves 60k tracks, so the handful of tracks
selected by these mixes seems way too low to me. I'm sure I'm missing
something regarding making the smart mixes play as more dynamic
playlists perhaps?  Thoughts?

 No reasonable way to do this in an interactive way for this size
 collection: there's no way to tell the API to get me tracks without an
 EN
 id. You have to get the list of tracks in junks of 100 (the API doesn't

 allow for more results per call), and without killing the hit rate (120

 queries per minute shared with _all_ users of this plugin)...

 The plugin actually does this task to get rid of removed tracks. But to

 protect users from the rate limit the process is seriously throttled
 (max.
 6 requests/min per user) in a background task. In your case this would

 take several hours. I could use this lengthy process to report those
 tracks to the log file without too much overhead. Would this help your

 need?

  2) Which online services are used? Is it just the 'standard' ones
 like
  MOG, Pandora, etc. - or can it look into other places exposed by
 plugins
  like Soundcloud or Band's Campout (aka Bandcamp?)

 No, only services supported by TEN can be used (MOG, Napster/Rhapsody,

 Deezer, Spotify at this time). As TEN is doing the mixing they need to

 know about tracks. And they only know tracks of their partners. I hope

 they'll add support for more in the future.

Thanks for the response! The question on missing tracks was mostly
curiosity, but if it's straightforward to log them when found, that
seems useful. One of the reasons I like MusicIP is that it finds odd
weird tracks in the depths of my collection that probably aren't known
by much of anyone, and would be interesting to know which things TEN
might be missing.

Just some ideas regarding this.

Would it be an option to upload unrecognized tracks and let their
analyzer handle them ?
http://developer.echonest.com/docs/v4/track.html#upload

There is also a related third party service that might be of interest:
http://echoprint.me/

And if you like to try to send adjusted tag values and see if it works
better, an option might be to use https://acoustid.org/ to get better
tag data based on a calculated fingerprint and then send that tag data
instead of the tags in the file to TEN API.

All this would of course only have to be handled for unrecognized
tracks, which hopefully is a smaller sub section of the complete
library. If you do it for the complete library I suspect it would hurt
the scanning times too much so then you probably don't want to do it at
every rescan.

I understand that you might not want to add this complexity, I'm just
mentioning the options I'm aware of in case you feel it's something you
like to improve.

I think TEN needs an application that scans your library for unanalyzed
tracks. The application would then have to analyse (and/or upload) the

I wouldn't want to do this without the user's knowledge. And then we open
up a whole new can of worms imho. New UI would be required, bandwidth
throttling, binaries for all kind of platforms are required, progress
information which might be asyncronous etc. And all of this with the rate
