89.9 out of Windsor, it was Brave New Waves and Nightlines that I was taping
at night (and listening to the next day) to hear some great bands (that didn't

were playing something off the *just released* "Whites off earth now" album by
this new group out of Toronto, Cowboy Junkies. (the music set also included
Patti Smith and Half Japanese)

Carl W: what ever happened to Brent Bambrey (wasn't that the original hosts

But I wasn't as cool as Gravel Train Mitch...he actually got on the show by
calling the answering machine and leaving a request. (Note to the uneducated:
on Nightlines, in order to put in a request, you must call this answering
machine and answer the question posed on the recorder first, and then place
your request) The following week, they would play back some of the better
responses to the question.

Fatboy Slim eating MMs and Cake riding on a Jet (minimal twang, if any)

1999-03-03 Thread Ameritwang

A few weeks back, I actually caught some of 120 Minutes on MTV, and found my
self actually intrigued/enthused by the 3 videos I did catch (one, of course,
was the new Sparklehorse). The other 2 artists, (I actually wrote their names
down to look into) were Fatboy Slim - "Praise You" and Eminem.

Now, I hadn't heard either name for at least 2 weeks, then, all of a sudden
I'm hearing both of themAnd just last week, I heard that Fatboy Slim is
actually a former Housemartin (Norman Cook?), which caught my attention as
well (since I've always liked the Housemartins...and thought the Beautiful
South was "ok", but never got into "Beats Int'l)

Honestly, I doubt I can be sold on the Eminem camp, however, I've noticed
jdiva "np'ing" the disc a few times. Fatboy Slim, now there's a different
story.

Regarding CAKE: I've always enjoyed their radio songs to a point where I'm
not sick of hearing them when they are played (maybe because they don't get
too much play (or overplayed) around these parts...at least not on the
stations I listen to). Although, not on my "short wantlist", I may have to
add their name onto my "need to look into" list...thanks Neal.

"Jet" covers reminds me of this Jellyfish disc I have where they do "Jet",
"Let 'Em In" and "No Matter What" (Badfinger) live. I believe the "Jet" cover
is intro'd with "This is the sexiest song ever written"...and then the singer
goes on to say, "I think you know what 'Jet' really means..."

Ok, I lied, there's no twang in this post.

btw: It was a great show last night. Part time Stranger drummer, David
Pohl's band, (I forget the band's name, but think it was something like, Soma
Metizo) was EXCELLENT! I suck at describing music, etc. (that's why I'm not a
writer, eh?)...but I'll do my best. The make up of the band is David on a
full drum kit (unlike what he plays with the Strangers), a guy on some
aborigone-tubed like instrument (let's call it a primitive trombone), a couple
of bongo/conga styled players (one of which played guitar that I noticed) and
a combination of male and female vocals (separately). The guy's vocals were
very "reggae" flavored, while the female's tended to hinge on a hip-hop, or
trip-hop type thing. There's definitely a groove thing going on. In fact,
the acousticness of the whole thing *kinda* reminded me of when LL Cool J did
that acoustic (MTV Unplugged?) show on MTV about 6 years ago...I could easily
see these kids on the road with someone like Beck...A band I will definitely
check out again, when I see that they're playing!!

As far as the Strangers go, they were fantastic! They played the their new
disc from start to finish (with one minor exception midway to pre-empt an
inevitable de-tuning). They even had a guest trumpeter on stage for one
track, who, unfortunately is named Garth, I do believe. If you see them
coming your way, make sure you check them out!!

And finishing the night off was the Naildrivers! Erin Co. sounded even

This Blueberries CD kicks ass. Its the arithmetic mean of The Jayhawks
and Blue Mountain. Which, I guess, would make it Wilco's first CD. Its
good. Thanks for the recommendations.

Hey, it wasn't #5 on my "Best of '98" for nuthin'...

Also, if you haven't gotten around to picking up the VA-Blastered
tribute CD by all means do so. Personally hadn't heard of several
of the artists on the CD but the thrill of discovering new artists like
The Grandsons,Last Train Home, Highway 13 is the reason why
"Americana" is so interesting.

Has this been discussed? Was I sleeping? Using my "delete" finger liberally
that week?

Can I hear some details on this? (artists/label/etc.)

and finally, is the "Highway 13" on that disc the *same* Highway 13 from
Pittsburgh?

Inquiring minds want to know...(ok, that's a lie...only *I* want to know)

On another note...how many of you p2'ers have owned (or own) a three sided
album? And what is it called?

I own a ONE sided album...
it's Screaming Trees "Something About Today" EP

If I recall correctly, the b-side has the words "Thank You" or something
etched in it.

Bob Soron added:

"Monty Python's Matching Tie and Handkerchief." Side 3 was a hidden track
on Side 2; the two spirals were interwoven so that, when you dropped the
tone arm, you never knew which "side" you'd get.

This reminds me of a old MAD Magazine 45 I have/had that had multiple endings
to the song, and depending on how/where your needle hit the groove depended on
which ending you got!

(of course, I played this on the same Hi-Fi I recall stacking multiple records
on for hours of listening enjoyment in my youth)

Didn't Wherehouse also buy either Grow Biz Int'l or just the rights to the
Disc-Go-Round franchise as well??

So if I signed a deal with a major label tomorrow, and assuming that I am
not quite as popular as Beatles/Metallica et al,
then I would still have the option of telling the label "don't sell my
stuff to the record clubs"?

I did not know that -- I assumed that the major labels and the record clubs
 had some kind of arrangement.

de-lurking a bit, (since I haven't posted in a week, does that qualify me as a
lurker now?)...

I recall when that 7 Mary 3 album came out (with that annoying single)...
I think it was through Mammoth/Atlantic.
Anyway, I recall seeing it listed in one of the disc club's magazines, and
later I read where 7M3 had it removed, stating that it was in their contract
that it not appear in any of those clubs. (there was another artist listed in
the article, but I forget who it was). Anyway, I don't think I've seen their
name/listing since. (and quite honestly, haven't really looked either! g)

I thought Iceman's insight on the Hootie disc was interesting, and makes me
wonder what kind of arrangement Radiohead has, considering their 1st 2 are
available, but "OK Computer" has never shown up in any of the catalogs.
