It's a temporary medicine. Not sure what it's called but I kept it around at
one time. You might ask a doctor. It's only for "emergencies".

It could be gas, has been before. but not much going on now.
When I get AD I do spasm a lot.
Most of the time on me, its bowel or bladder.
Or touching my crotch area when I get a yeast infection.
As long as I can sit up, it goes away quickly.
I fear taking lower blood pressure meds to lower it, since most of the time
I'm dealing with low blood pressure.

When you get an AD Headache, does the pain stay in your head, or does
your chest cramp too? This morning, for no know reason, just getting

my chest cramped so hard it hurt too. Then my abdomen area starts to

[QUAD-L] AD while urinating update & life insurance question

2015-07-30 Thread Todd Daugherty
Hi all,

After a few bowel movements over a two day period my symptoms have gone
away. I am still going to the urologist but reschedlued it for a later
date.

As for the insurance, at my work I have about 450k of life insurance and am
trying to get another 500k 15-20yr term but my quote from Zander was denied
by everyone.

Any ideas on how to get another 500k so I can be at the recommended 10-12x
your income number?

Umm, perhaps it was just me but I didn't quite understand the directions which
prevent the external catheter from blowing off at night.

Could you please repeat the placement procedure for one of those nurses whose

I cath twice a day, getting up and going to bed. I pull the cath out slowly, in
tiny increments, to get the residual in the bottom of the bladder. Every once
in a while my bladder will feel very sore and spastic. It usually lasts 3-4
days and gives me sweats and headache. I'll bet it is where the cath has
irritated or caused a sore. I had never really thought of that before. I use
Azo pills for the pain. They help but make you pee orange. I'm praying that I
can maintain this routine for the number of days I have left. The sun shines
bright on my old Kentucky home today. Tis beautiful on my front porch! Health,
happiness, love, and Gods blessings to all my courageous quad peeps. You are

Yep, Wheel is right you can have an abrasion or raw spot inside...I was
cathed 3 times a day, but after about 3 years I started getting ( strichters )
which means blockage inside me, they removed it twice but it kept coming back
so my Urologist told me to get a Supra-pubic indwelling type catheter, best
deciscion me and wife made we have had this method 15 years now and we both
love not having to cath anymoreshe just drains my urine in the morning and
at night at bedtime. good luck ! Dan H.**

I was recently in the hospital and they were taking my blood pressure at
least twice a day. While I was in there I was taking regular stole
softeners twice a day and I noticed my blood pressure was almost normal all
the time. Sure it dropped when I got up, but it didn't go high like it does
at home.

I've only been home for three days and my blood pressure is 150/90 in bed.
I need to get back on the stool softeners.

[QUAD-L] AD issues still

2014-09-02 Thread quadmail
I’m still having the A.D. issue. High blood pressure and pounding headache when
I lay down or when washing my crotch area. While in the E.R (i.e. my last
message) they CAT Scanned my head to make sure I didn’t have a stroke. They
also CAT Scanned my groin area again. I just had that done the night before at
their sister hospital. First time they found nothing, this time they found a
fluid filled cyst in my scrodum. They said it’s common, and should not be
painful. But they also found a yeast infection later. Probably from all the
antibiotocs from my UTI. That seems to be the cause. I hope, it’s been over a
week now.
Bad few weeks, 3 ER visits.

Hello fellow quads,

I'm just going to throw this one out there and we'll ponder over any
replies.

I am a C-5/6 quad, mostly healthy, but throughout my 48 years of Post SCI
have occasions where my blood pressure will be skyhigh in two minutes later
 in the basement.

An example that I can use happen two months ago, just before we call the
ambulance, my blood pressure with 80/50, after the ambulance arrived in less
than five minutes my blood pressure went to 22?/13?. In about 10 minutes
into the transport it started fluctuating almost normal, 13?/8?.

Normally within about two weeks things would settle them, much more very
low blood pressure then high blood pressure, then we would return to normal.

This time, two months after the incident, my blood pressure remains high,
at times reaching more than 200/13?. In the evening I would go to sleep,
wake up in about two hours with a fever of 100 plus and my heart would be
elevated to 90 to 100. My normal temps run in 97° range, normal heartbeat
48, this morning my temperature was 95.6°.

Sound familiar? What meds are you using if you get something similar?

Later,

Glenn

yes I agree! I took the new blood pressure med last night after blood pressure
was 152/110 after just putting the sling under me to transfer to the bed……this
morning while getting up it was 154/115 but once I was in my chair it was
73/52…….my norm is 90/60 J

Yes. Ended up having an urostomy procedure done. I still have some pain, but I
don't have the bouts with AD like I used to.
My recovery was pretty long and difficult, but all in all for me it was the
only option other than continuing on with dysreflexia and other problems.

My primary physician mentioned that this might be an alternative for me. Trying
to find something I can use to control spasms. They think my medication for
bladder spasms might be causing spikes in my blood pressure. I'm not sure
anymore. I have ceased taking the medication most of the time and I'm still
spiking whenever I am in bed, but having normal blood pressure any other time.

For some, botex injections, inside the bladder, can help with bladder
spasms. Not for everyone, it is best to check with your Uro to determine if
you are a candidate for this procedure. Its also successfully used to
prevent bladder spillage with older/seniors with bladder issues.

Any time the catheter moves it triggers dysreflexia, so I keep it taped
down. Draining the collection bag also triggers a very short episode of

I had some problems with pain and AD whenever I've had my suprapubic. I found
that a lot of the problems were occurring because the catheter was rubbing

Do you take any kind of pain medicine. You might even try Tylenol. This week
I've been taking 1 Lortab and a Clonidine about an hour before I get up and
it has helped tremendously.

Removing that muscle, leaves the bladder wide open and the Texas Cath

2013-03-13 Thread wheelchair
Ok, Understood. That is what I thought but wanted to make sure.
Removing that muscle, leaves the bladder wide open and the Texas Cath Kit.
It sounds like your urethra collaped or scar'ed, requiring your present
indwelling Foley.
Do they use Zylocaine?

Thank you W. Yes, a nurse is suppose to do it here (Ohio). It's done on 'his
time'. That is how my care plan is written. Care Star, the program through Ohio
that deals with Medicaid Waivers and home health care is actually paying
Independent Care Providers to change foleys and bowel programs. He hasn't
submitted the paperwork. They consider an aide different because an an agency
would never permit that.

He's a wonderful caregiver but certainly no angel! (smiling)

Diannal, your husband is also an angel. I hear they come in various shapes,
sizes and sexes. I applaud him for accepting the responsibility to change your
cath. In most areas, only registered nurses are allowed to do that, not health
aides. Just let him know that cath'ing males is still easier.

Just wanted to share that if no urine is leaking out remove the catheter

Wow! Nothing like a big dose of AD to start my week off.

My catheter has been stopping up so I went to dr 8 weeks ago (I’m sure I have a
bladder stone). He ordered CT scan and I’ve had to reschedule it 3 times in 6
weeks because of weather, getting it done tomorrow (thank God). My home health
nurse told me not long ago that when my cath stops up have someone remove it
until she gets here and urine will flow out. Normally, (over the course of the
last almost 15 yrs) urine spasms out around cath so I have never done that.
UNTIL TODAY! Urine wasn’t leaking out, I was having spasms in my back, face and
neck were fire engine red, my head was POUNDING. I thought “here we go, I’m
gonna have a stroke” before she gets here! Then I remembered, get the catheter
out! My mom was able to get it out and sure enough, urine leaked out. Hated to
pee in my pants but when AD is that bad……….it really didn’t matter!

I have been very fortunate. My ex-husband (Dave), lives with me and has been my
only long-term care-giver. We tried a few agencies but the help wasn't
adequate. He changes my cath twice a month. He's been around the few times I
went in to A.D. (blocked foleys). Those headaches are so bad one can not move
fast enough to relieve the pain. I always get sleepy after AD. He's a
independent health care provider.
22 yrs post.

Your Mom is an Angel. That deed was not easy from all sides of the issue. I'm
sure you were barking out orders while she was doing her best. Men, come with
instructions and a landing strip. Women sitting have a fort with bunkers all
the way around. Again, not an easy task, but I'm glad everything worked out.
Best Wishes

Greg,

15 minutes is a long time when having severe AD.I had to wait about 30
minutes yesterday..it was truly an emergency! Had CT scan this morning, I'd
bet my life I have a bladder stone! I only made it a week and a half between
cath changes this time! Ready to get it resolved!!

I only got that bad a few times.

Once when I was intermittent cathing. I was only a few years post injury and
happened to be at the hospital visiting my former nurses. I was in the
cafeteria and started sweating. I thought I'd last until we got home, but
within minutes my head was going to explode. We rushed to the Rehab floor, but
they had no caths there. They have a "Cath Team" that rotates around cathing
people on a schedule. Or you have to page them. So I had to wait another 15
minutes for someone to show up. At that time I never leaked. I was clamped
tight. I went like 5 years and never leaked. Not until they were taking stones
out and got one stuck in my urethra. It actually broke through the urethra wall
before they got it out. After that I had to use condom caths. Until my SP. Now
I try to always have a cath kit in my van.

Once from gas while doing my B-program. It lasted so long and so bad, I had to
call 911 while still going... Embarrassing.. It was vary am-bare-assing at the
time.

I think twice from a hip injury. It took like a week to find the cause. Ended
up in the ER again.

So the nurse did the work in reinstalling your cath and filling the bulb.

I've done but male and female cath changes and prefer males, as it is so
much easier. With females ya need a flashlight and a road map of the female
anatomy map. (females should have TATS with instructions) smiling

Remember, when changing an indwelling cath... even in an emergency.. one
has to maintain a sterile or clean area to remove the old cath and allow urine
to pass and then install a new sterile cath. I'm sure you will agree with that.

Best Wishes

Just wanted to share that if no urine is leaking out remove the catheter
because it’s stopping up the body’s natural route for urine to come out! May
have saved me from stroking out today!!

[QUAD-L] AD

2013-03-11 Thread nichole rohling
Wow! Nothing like a big dose of AD to start my week off.

My catheter has been stopping up so I went to dr 8 weeks ago (I'm sure I
have a bladder stone). He ordered CT scan and I've had to reschedule it 3
times in 6 weeks because of weather, getting it done tomorrow (thank God).
My home health nurse told me not long ago that when my cath stops up have
someone remove it until she gets here and urine will flow out. Normally,
(over the course of the last almost 15 yrs) urine spasms out around cath so
I have never done that. UNTIL TODAY! Urine wasn't leaking out, I was having
spasms in my back, face and neck were fire engine red, my head was POUNDING.
I thought "here we go, I'm gonna have a stroke" before she gets here! Then I
remembered, get the catheter out! My mom was able to get it out and sure
enough, urine leaked out. Hated to pee in my pants but when AD is that
badit really didn't matter!

Just wanted to share that if no urine is leaking out remove the catheter
because it's stopping up the body's natural route for urine to come out! May

I have had two very serious episodes of AD that resulted in ambulance rides.
The sad and scary
part was that nobody at the hospital knew anything about it. My bp was 180/120
and all they did
was keep me for observation for about 5 hrs. until I calmed down. I truly
thought I was going to

I had a plugged Foley a week ago - in about 12 hours I was talking to God -
making arrangements for my departure/arrival. I called my visiting nurse
who does monthly changes for me and she heard the stress in my voice. She
was here in about the longest 45 minutes I have ever spent - well with
maybe 1 exception of when they inserted my traction in '67. She swapped out
my tube and I felt instant relief from the pounding head and gut crushing
pressure. AD is certainly nothing to mess with. My sympathies to any who
have to deal with AD on a regular basis.

Last month I posted- "I was just recently diagnosed with inherited
Cardiomyopathy." My diagnosis came when I went to the hospital for being really
short of breath and in atrial fib; I was just getting over an upper respiratory
virus, my bronchial tubes were plugged in the left lung and allowed it to
collapse. The echo I had while in the hospital showed my heart being enlarged.
My recent echo showed that my heart was in real good shape; my heart appeared
enlarged do to autonomic dysreflexia (AD) and the collapsed lung. I rebounded
quickly after a bronchoscopy for the collapsed lung; I had only one night in
the hospital.
My heart doctor is teaching a class at Mayo this month and is taking my echo's
to show what a quad's heart with AD and a lung collapse looks like.
It feels good to know what condition my condition is in woohoo!

I used saline down my trach it a mucus is thick, but I usually take a breathing
treatment also and that will loosen up the mucus with albuterol. Do you?. I
have been up oxygen at night at home, when my oxygen levels were low , but
that was usually after bronchitis.I really hate wearing oxygen tubing, it is so
uncomfortable.

Hello everybody,

I too suffer from the feeling of not getting enough oxygen, its worse when I
lay down and when I'm to hot. My stats cane be normal but I still feel
panic, zanx helps and a breathing treatment helps with the tight feeling in
my chest. I keep oxygen on hand but seldom use it, glad to have input on
this subject I thought I was the only one that suffered with this. Oh yea!
I use saline down my track to, it loosens up the secretions.

I had a bad morning. I got overheated during the night, not much sleep. Then
just as I got up, my nose got stuffed up from allergies. Though I wasn't in
AD (autonomic Distraflexia), I had that same kind of feelings. Like not
getting enough oxygen, your too hot, your too cold, you want to get up, but
the you want to lay down, almost a panic feeling. The more you think about
it, the worse it gets. My blood pressure, heart rate, temps, all ok, just
the feeling of not getting enough oxygen.

This ever happen to you?

I feel like I'd like to have an oxygen take close by, just for those bad
days. I know it's all in my head, but I wonder if it would help.

Hey Greg (and Dan),

Well, I just spent 15 minutes dictating and correcting an e-mail to
you and the whole computer shut down. Try number two!

I have had asthma since I was very little (hereditary). But it is
only triggered by a three or four things. These are animal dander,
humidity, the powder found in latex gloves, and sometimes nerves. >
Although very rarely the latter.

Living here in the desert with such low humidity has never triggered
an asthma attack. But I remember when we lived in Virginia seven
years ago my room would get stuffy and I would take a puff of
albuterol from my inhaler many mornings before my husband went to work
when I would be alone. That brought nerves into it a little.

I don't think I would go to the extreme of having an oxygen tank
unless you were diagnosed with some type of lung problem. Perhaps
when you do get overheated (stufy room too maybe) along with anxiety
you are experiencing a form of asthma. Like Dan, just a puff for two
of albuterol from my inhaler helps me breathe better no matter what
the case. I have not used it in a long, long, long time but it is
always in my backpack just in case.

Believe me that Oxygen is dispensed by RX only. You a script from a doctor
for even a small amount, so be aware before hand.

Too warm in bed brings this on in me. Also, Mirapex (for restless legs -
spasms) seems to have something to do with it as does Melatonin (for sleep).
Maybe I'll switch back to booze. I REALLY hate the panic attacks. I have to
get up and sit in front of a fan or go outside in the open. Glad I'm not
alone.

Re: [QUAD-L] AD / Oxygen

2007-11-05 Thread John S.
AD can be varied in the symptoms. Sounds like you had it in a more mild form.
When you become a quad you don't control your hypothalmus like you should, if
at all. This puts out hormones that let you survive in a wide range of
temperatures. It does other stuff too. When you become hypothermic and
hypersensative at the same time, you got AD going. Once I passed out in a
hydrotherapy tank. The lady in charge was really upset and I slept for 3 days.
I'm sure glad your not still cooking.

Best wishes
john
