I just wanted to see if there is an obvious thing I'm doing at night.
Prob with sleep study is it doesn't happen every night. I could fast
forward the video... Home study might be ok.

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. The doc doing mine said that I was one
of her worst patients for waking up/stop breathing/snore.

I could not take wearing the mask. so, i did not use it for 10 years.
Now, I have Afib, weakened wall, high blood pressure while I sleep and
in morning.

I have been wearing mask now for 1 1/2 years. not as tired through day.
I found certain mask that I can take off if needed but I can't put mask
on by myself.

I have caregiver put on at night. I live alone.

I heard that you can have study done inhome. I live in the sticks so,
I'd think you can get it at home too.

Just get study done. Only way to know.

Be careful…..if you have a spastic bladder, pain meds can back up in your
system due to not being processed well in your liver/kidney and you can
overdose and be very sleepy. My husband was hospitalized for this 3 times until

I used to wear them religiously, but then I had a little difficulty with
skin integrity on my heel. You have to watch them for any degradation in
the padding. I still wear them occasionally when I feel like my Achilles
tendon is allowing my foot to drop a little too much.

I wear something akin to the new Sketcher's (spelling) steel toe work
shoes. They really helped my feet and I find that wearing a simple bunny
boot is sufficient when I go to bed to protect my delicate heels.

 Did not finish yesterdays post..

Yesterday was very strange. I slept fine and was feeling normal. I was
awake for about 2 hours, played fetch with the dog outside, all was ok. All
of the sudden I fell asleep. I got woken up and lasted only a few minutes
then fell asleep again. I got woken up again, and fell asleep gain. I could
not stay awake. I mean I would blink and fell asleep the second I closed my
eyes. I felt something was not right.

This went on for a few hours. I was about to go to the hospital I was so
concerned. There is tired and then there was this. My family kept waking me
up they we so concerned. Not long ago I O.D. from a new medication
interaction. It felt like I did when coming out if that. But then they
could not wake me up at all for a long time, they had to call 911.

I took only my normal meds yesterday morning so I do not think that was the
cause. At one point I tied to drink a hot chocolate. I was half way
reclined, and felt like something was stabbing me in my shoulder. I woke up
and had tipped my drink over and was getting burned.

 Anyone ever been that tired?

Wow Greg. That is a new level of tired. If you don't improve, call the medicine
man ASAP. As proven by the hot chocolate, very dangerous. I about cooked myself
with a hair dryer like that once. I still have the scars. Be very careful, my

What level injury is your son?  How much can he move?  Biceps?  Strength?  Type
of bed?

I'm c5-6.  I have decent biceps but no triceps and cannot transfer myself.  I
have a queen size bed that is pushed next to my bedroom wall.  I sleep on the
side of the bed that is flush against the wall so there is no way to fall out
of bed.  I have mounted a grab bar on that wall, a few inches above the bed.  I
am able to put my arm under the grab bar and, using my biceps, bring myself up
to my elbows.  Once propped on my elbows I can turn myself or reposition pretty
well.  It takes some practice but it works well for me.

I've been thinking about making a video to post on youtube to show other quads
what works for me.  I'll do it.  Would love to hear/see how the rest of you do
things!

gone. ( there are some quads that can transfer) it depends on the person and
how
high the injury was.  Dan H.

Greetings Nancy,

I'm surprised that your son doesn't realize that his condition is quite
normal, once he gets into bed and lacking the strength to position himself.
Kind of like a fish out of water. The answer or resolves are not simple
but must be tried n errored. Quads are so different. Not only by the level
of injury, but also the effects and results differ greatly on those
injured at the same level. Some may have biceps and no triceps. Others have
triceps and no biceps. And then there are those with triceps on one arm and
biceps on the other. Transfers and positioning are taught by OT in Rehab
Hospitals and sometimes at home. Sometimes it happens and other times it was
never meant to be.
Is your son presently working with a Occupational Therapist, at home?

I went through a spell four or five years ago with those very same symptoms. It
felt like the ceiling and all four walls were closing in on me. I eventually
found myself with full fledged panic attacks. It was horrible. I actually did
sleep in my tilt chair for a few nights. This went on for nearly a year. The
doc and I finally found a combination of drugs that calmed me down. I

I really agree with you about a busy day, and the older I get the more I
realize I don’t need 8 or 9 hours of sleep. It took me awhile to realize that
I did not need that much sleep before I broke my neck so why would I need it
now? I used to take a book to bed to read, and if I woke up in the middle of
the night I would pick it up to read for awhile. Since I can’t do that now I
will use my ECU to turn on the TV and find the boring program that acts like a
sleeping aid. But summertime I usually sleep really well because I’m outside
from 9 to 7 if possible.

I am still keeping personal information like this off list. I was put on
Amitriptyline (Elavil) for pain and spasms in 1995 with the hope that that
alleviate my pain and spasms from syringomyelia. It didn't but I ended up
staying on it anyway.
In 1997 I cut back from 50 mg at bedtime to 25 mg and still slept fitfully
through the night but at some point, can't remember when, something must've
been
bothering me badly so I went back to 50 mg at bedtime and am still on that
dosage. I remember trying it one time to go back to 25 mg again but couldn't do
it.

I go through periods of not being able to sleep but not having that problem
right now--thank God! All we need is one more problem right? Don't answer! LOL.

[QUAD-L] Sleep aid...

I found something that helps me sleep without knocking me out or giving me
morning hangover. It is a generic Allergy suppressant. I don't remember if
it was from Walmart or Sam's club but it's the cheap stuff. Ingredients are:
acetaminophen 325mg, chlorphenlamine maleate 2mg and phenylephrine HCL 5mg.
I take 2 in the AM and 2 around 6PM. Sleep like a baby.

2008-04-13 Thread Stacy Harim
I'm like you. I require more sleep now. Its very difficult for me to fall
asleep but when I do, I'm out. For a long time I wasn't able to sleep at all
then started taking Ambien which gave me a few hours then I woke up for a
couple then back to sleep for a while. I've seen that infomercial and its
bogus if its the one i'm thinking about. A news program went after him to
question him and he completely avoided talking.

I was up late one night and happened to stop the show I was watching on my DVR
just in time to catch an infomercial that was discussing a cure for insomnia.
I know infomercials are always notorious for hyping things, but this particular
one was selling a book that had common remedies for problems. This particular
one mentioned just smelling some sort of coffee. I sure would like to know
what type of coffee that is, because it would nice to be able to sleep when I
should be.
I am lucky enough not to suffer from chronic pain like many of you. Yes I have
pain, but it's obviously not nearly as bad as the majority of people on this
list suffer from. My heart goes out to you and I am seriously hoping that my
pain doesn't get any worse. Right now it's really bad during the winter, but
after I get up and get used to being up, it diminishes significantly.
As for me, when I really need to sleep I take Benadryl. It usually gives me
about four hours straight and then I'm able to sneak a couple of hours here and
there. I feel much better when I get about seven hours sleep, but that rarely
happens any longer. Prior to injury I usually got about five hours, but I was
very active and didn't seem to require the normal eight hours of sleep.

[QUAD-L] SLEEP- Nature's Order

2008-04-13 Thread wheelchair
I don't really know if Natural Sleep can be found on Google as it is not
something you buy or grow.
Sleep happens during the time after we are conceived and continue to follow
us thru life. During natural sleep amazing things happen to the body that
only experts can explain. The lack of natural sleep can be harmful to the
body. Sleep study programs are good for determining if you are getting enough
of
the good natural sleep. Sleep studies can also determine if depravation is a
tangible issue.

I was hoping that Google has information on art of natural sleep and the
best way to achieve it without chemicals. If chemicals are required, then
which
chemical produces that best of natural sleep.
Enjoy the journey.
Best Wishes

nothing better. I sleep so much better in the summertime.

Those of you in the warm states have such an advantage over those of us in
the colder states. The sunshine helps your mood and you get the natural

We are having winter in Kansas. I just came home from my mother's and it
was snowing lightly and really cold and windy. The seven-day forecast says
it's close to warm up on 70 on Wednesday, which I hardly believe. We just
haven't had any sunshine.

When I live it doesn't get very hot or very cold but I find myself is having

very cold yet, except for when I was at Craig Hospital in Colorado. It was
really a pain in the neck... I'm assuming because of my hardware... I
could not stand it if it got to warm, I hate that. When I get to warm is
when I'm in the most pain though. Is anyone else like that?

Re: [QUAD-L] SLEEP

2008-04-11 Thread John S.
I have had problems sleeping since 1995. I had a very serious case of pneumonia
and it damaged my lungs so badly they din't think I'd ever be able to get off
oxygen. Well, I did, but I never sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time and often
it takes 2-3 hours to return to sleep. The past few years I tried using pot and
it would help immensly at first. I've given it up because it no longer has the
effect and all my drunken relatives frown on it. They would use that as an
excuse not to visit me. I can't say they light up my life, but I do get lonely.
It isn't addictive so, it wasn't a problem to stop.
I do take valium, vicodin and oxycodone (not all at once) so you would think
sleep would come easy. It doesn't and I do get depressed watching old movies as
the sleep timer runs down and then listening to the building settle.
I have taken all the over the counter preperations like tylenol pm, even
getting some stuff from tv that uses triptiphan.
My doctor doesn't want to prescribe anything and seems to feel that it may
simply be normal for me to sleep a few hours a day. Once I'm in my chair, I'm
not drowsy or sleepy. The orthopedic appliances in my chair that are twisting
and forcing me straight would wake up a dead person.
Do many of you get by on 3 to 5 hours sleep a day?

I wish all of you the best,
john

pneumonia and it damaged my lungs so badly they din't think I'd ever be able
to get off oxygen. Well, I did, but I never sleep more than 2-3 hours at a
time and often it takes 2-3 hours to return to sleep. The past few years I
tried using pot and it would help immensly at first. I've given it up
because it no longer has the effect and all my drunken relatives frown on
it. They would use that as an excuse not to visit me. I can't say they light

to stop.
I do take valium, vicodin and oxycodone (not all at once) so you would think
sleep would come easy. It doesn't and I do get depressed watching old movies
as the sleep timer runs down and then listening to the building settle.
I have taken all the over the counter preperations like tylenol pm, even
getting some stuff from tv that uses triptiphan.
My doctor doesn't want to prescribe anything and seems to feel that it may
simply be normal for me to sleep a few hours a day. Once I'm in my chair,
I'm not drowsy or sleepy. The orthopedic appliances in my chair that are

turn it off at some point during the night because my core temperature gets

Re: [QUAD-L] SLEEP

2008-04-11 Thread Lori Michaelson
I am in chronic pain all the time as well. Like Corie Jones (a list member)
we can't find anything that is of real help. I have run the gamut of
narcotics, tens units, heating pads, etc.. I was on OxyContin since late
1998 or early 1999 until January of last year when my insurance company
stopped paying for it. Which was just as well as I do not think it was
helping. It was terrible getting off of it but I finally did and then
noticed not much of a difference so I was right. Strangely enough though...
the narcotics seem to help with the spasms more than any other drug for
spasms.

Anyway, Vicodin is just a hydrocodone with Tylenol. Hydrocodone Bitartrate
and Acetaminophen = Vicodin. Oxycodone is it much different from
hydrocodone either. My husband just had some surgery and the doctor gave
him Vicodin him for pain. He took it right after surgery but it just made
him drowsy which allowed him to sleep through the pain. Since then he began
to take ibuprofen (Advil) every four hours instead. But the pain got worse
again today so you broke down and took a couple of Vicodin which is allowing
him to sleep at least.

In sum, I am glad that I am off the narcotics for the most part and I just
learn to live with the pain. Keeping busy is the only thing that helps
along with sleeping. By the time I have warmed up* really good* in bed
before sleep ... I put an ice gel pack on my back which freezes the pain
there and allows me to sleep. I am still on amitriptyline at bedtime for
sleep as well.

And the wonderful warmth of the Southwest Sun helps me immensely! It is
sunny and 72° here today.

Re: [QUAD-L] SLEEP

2008-04-11 Thread John S.
Dan, I avoided taking any narcotic drugs for years while I worked. By 2000 my
deforming was becoming really noticeable. I was regularly going to have spurs
ground off. I lean dramatically to the right. I was overdoing tylenol and advil
when the doctor gave me hydrocodone. I'd be shaking and drenched in sweat and
one vicodin ended all that in about ten minutes.
As time passed I started needing more. I take as much as 8 5/500's a day and
some days 4 10mg's of valium. The valium works well when I'm having anxiety
attacks that usually preceed AD. Since they modified my chair to straighten me
out, the doctor easily realized I needed oxycodone. I rarely take more than one
a day but I can take two and just wednesday I had to. My lower back felt like
it was on fire. These are feelings I haven't really had since becoming a quad.
I knew my body was in pain by the sweating and AD. The high blood pressure was
becoming serious a couple years ago when I started taking atenelol to control
it.
If I'm layed on my sides for just a few minutes it will cause me to have
seizures with dramatic blood pressures and irregular heartbeat. My hips no
longer have any cartiledge and my pelvis never healed real well after my
accident.
This makes the idea of removing spurs from my spine real iffy. I can't not lay
on my back and laying on my belly was ruled out while getting x-rays. I don't
remember what happened but I came to in the ER and intibated (sp?). I was upset
because I had a DNR on file. if I lay completely flat on my back I have trouble
breathing, so I'm running out of positions.
My doctor understands that I just want to be comfortable and able to get in my
chair as long as poossible.
If your syrinx is moving upward and your losing function they may decide to
treat it.
If your suffering with more pain then I'd suggest taking more hydrocodone. At
some point it will no longer work. You will need a stronger med. Use them as
you must but never OD on them. (that is just 3)
I really wish you the best. I know that I'd have done a lot of things
differently if I knew it was going to become this painful. I've had a DNR for 3
years now. I expect it to be respected the next time. I'm not suicidal. I just
feel I've been through enough and I too often the pain isn't treatable.
We are all different and feel differently about this matter.
I hope your pain isn't like what I feel.
I take them everyday and I'm sure I'm addicted to them all. There is no guilt
to me. I never get what people call a buzz. It is just what I need to do to
live.
I hope that is some help to you. I don't expect everyone to agree with my
choices.

I wish you the very best with your pain,
john

Thank you for the good wish.
You said that Roserem did nothing for you, it is a mild sleeping pill. I think
the vicoden is 750mg, it is not that strong. I can't believe so many people

You're not the only one that's a sucker for the free gift! I love to go to
Macy's-hate the product price, but love the free gifts.

I feel very lucky that I'm able to have my environmental control unit. I
really haven't gotten very much through any of the state programs, so I was
very surprised when they called me and said one was available. They had set
up in a ladies home, and then she went into a nursing home, so I benefited
from it. I have it on the bracket on a table next to my bed, and then I can
transfer it to a bracket on my wheelchair. It turns lights on and off,
controls my TV and VCR/DVD, turns any switches on or off that it's connected
to, and hopefully will open a door for me when I finally get an opener. Just
like all speech recognition things, it does have an attitude :-).

I love my little down throw-it is so soft and snuggles right up to me when I
am cold. But I have found I am not so cold anymore as I was for the first
three or four years. I got a couple of good burns from our fireplace in the
first few years, once an ember popped out and landed on my leg. Luckily, I
saw it, and was able to get someone to help me get rid of the ember. It left
a nice scar though, it's a match for the vaccination mark on my thigh-yes,
they used to vaccinate in the thighs back in the dinosaur years :-)

Our winters are usually quite cold, and I have found a silk turtleneck
underneath the sweater or sweatshirt keeps me fairly toasty. I also love
vests, they keep my back and neck warm, and if I get too warm we can unzip
them. My brother-in-law brings me beautiful ponchos from India, and although
they are not terribly warm, they look beautiful and I can wear warm clothes
under the poncho.

The things we go through to be comfortable. I used to apologize to visitors,
because my living room was so warm, but I decided it was my living room and
I would have it the way I want, so everyone has learned to wear lighter
weight shirt under their sweater or sweatshirt! Then we are all comfortable.

Have a good day Joan

Dear Linda,
Vicodin is hydrocodone. It is synthetic heroin and it really is addicting. I've
been taking 5mg's for a few years and I sure can't just stop. Doctor says if I
have to change I'll need methadone before taking anything else. It is effective
and stays working for most people for many years. I think you mean 7.5 mgs as
750 would be a little strong for your average heroin addict. :D
It's handy stuff for pain.

I can't really tell if the Ambien still works or not, because I take it at
night time with about nine other pills, which all cause drowsiness. Most
nights I fall asleep before my head hits the pillow would stay asleep until
about
noon the following day. When I first came home from the hospital, I could
not sleep all night. I guess it took a while to get used to being home after

Before I had my SCI and the myriad of other injuries that came with it, I
averaged 6 1/2 hours a night. I sleep about 7 hours after I take a few hits of
pot. If I'm out of herb I sleep in smaller increments and take tylenol PM. Pot
has been the best sleep aid i have found and it really isn't addictive. It is
illegal so you might want to ask your local district attorney how they feel
about medical marijuana. I have relatives that are cops and consider pot busts
to be a waste of time and money.

Re: [QUAD-L] Sleep aids??

2007-03-09 Thread Lori Michaelson
Dave tied my answer up pretty well with his answer. I never used to have
problems sleeping but I do now on occasion. Those occasions come and go.

Before I was considering having shunt surgery done my doctor suggested that
I try amitriptyline at bedtime to see if that would help my pain and spasms
before considering surgery. The one thing that medication did [and still
does to a certain extent] is make you sleep!

But since I have been on it over 10 years now... other factors sometimes
caused me not to get the sleep that I want. Although, the sleep that I WANT
LIKE = about 10 hours! LOL.

But over the last year and a half I have had some trouble sleeping so I
tried some over-the-counter Tylenol PM and it works okay if you do not use
it regularly. One has to be careful about using too much time Tylenol
anyway.

If you are not taking Benadryl on a regular basis... that should help as a
start.

But, again, like Dave said... my body seems to figure those things out
quickly and therefore they render themselves useless pretty quickly.

It is frustrating when you never know when you're not going to have a good
night's sleep so it is difficult to know when to take anything. But if I go
three nights with very little sleep then I will definitely take something
for the upcoming night because I am not going to go for four nights in a
row! LOL.

Not too long ago I asked my physician about a non-habit-forming sleep
medication and he suggested Ambien. He gave me about five samples. The
first one I took knocked me out the first night. The second it did only did
have the job. So I used the last of them sparingly since my body builds up
such a quick resistance.

Besides, I think any of those ARE/CAN BE VERY habit-forming so I never got a
regular prescription for it. And since I want to stay away from the Tylenol
... I now keep on hand one of those regular over-the-counter sleep aids for
desperate occasions.

Regularity is also part of the human body cycle. So is exercise and

I sleep in a hospital bed, only because I can't afford a big girl
bed. The one I had wasn't a good height for transfers and I felt more
comfortable having the rails to pull myself to get dressed. Now Im great at
rolling and want a bigger bed. I also pull the covers over my head while
I'm sleeping when it's cold. I used to not be able to breath when I did
that but love to sleep that way now.

Greg, Fellow insomniac,I liked you, stay up at night, I usually
don't go to sleep until after 6 a.m. just wondering why do you only take
amitriptyline three nights a week (you don't recommend amitriptyline for
sleeping?). Last year when I had a sore I was stuck in bed, so my brother
got me a laptop. They year he put a computer behind my bed and I have swing arm
monitor holder that the monitor sits on. My laptop barely works as it has
dropped to the deck twice. How do you get through the day after staying up
all night in your wheelchair? I bet you really sleep the next night after being
up. I know I would be unable to do that as I do need some sleep in the
morning and early afternoon. I'm so glad you have no problem with pressure
sores. I have such a strange schedule, but it is difficult to change sleep
patterns. I don't usually get sores unless my roho loses air. The
longest time to be in bed was the six months last year. We think that sore
was caused by actually laying on the cord of the laptop, it was getting hot and
burned out. How do you type? I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7.0
professional. Do you work on your music when you're Up all
night.Last night I couldn't go to sleep until after 11 a.m. but then I
did not get up until 430.I'm having to write this in Notepad, because

Hi, Dana

I'm writing this at 7:15am
after being up allnight, I did take a couple of power naps last night,
though and usually do on the nights i'm up. I take amitriptyline on the
nights I go to bed, I get to sleep around midnight and sleep straight thru until
9 or 10am and yes those are GREATsleep!I type with a
mouthstick, I've been I.M. a girl in Chicago with no
arms (types with her toes) for about 4 months so, I've been getting pretty
darn sore lately. I've had friends smuggle me some prescription pain
patches and boy do those work great! I can be narcoleptic during the day,
go out for 10 or 15 minutes (sometimes in the middle of a movie, lol!) and wake
up a little refreshed. I HATE being in bed, unless I'm sleeping, bed is
like prison to me otherwise. Yes, I work on music at night, surf the net,
watch TV, have HBO, and Comcast On Demand is cool. I have a reading stand,
I get paperbacks spiral bound at Office Depot to flip pages with my stick.
Life would be very primitive without computers for sure. Hey, I'm really
enjoying this board folks, blessings!

It's because his name is in the 'To' box along with the Quad-List, so if someone, like me, hits 'Reply To All' without looking at the 'To' box, the Reply will go toyou, him, and the List. If I hit 'Reply To Sender'it is sent to just you unless the Quad-List Addy is inserted into the 'To' box. I hope this makes sense.

I do the same thing you and
Greg do with temperature changes.
I never feel hot when
I am outside, even if it is 100 degrees. I can tell it would be hot for
others,,,but it doesn't register that way for me. I have to rely on others
to tell me my skin is turning red, or I need to go in. But if I am on the
inside and start having a "hot flash" I feel like I am out in the sun and burning
up. Sometimes the burning and itching gets so bad I have to take benadryl
and that makes it so much better.
I cannot stand the cold
anytime of the year. It is so painful that I don't even want to
move. I have a lap blanket anytime I ride in the car or go grocery
shopping. I go to Sams with sweater on and a lap blanket on my legs so I
can go around the meat and freezers and before I go outside I have to peel off
the layers.

Try using a pillow rather
than a blanket. I find that as long as I cover where I can feel it
regulates my temperature. AND, I can pull the pillow around with my good

I have the same problem with being cold and piling on the blankets.
And then getting so hot, I feel like I'm going to burn up and my temperature
actually goes up. My normal temperature is between 9698, my temperature
actually goes up. The only season I like is summer. It is
getting too cold for me already and it is only getting down to the 50s. My
arms hurt a lot because I can't stretch them out straight. When I wake up
I put weights on my wrists to stretch and that helps relieve the pain. No
one in the room is ever the same temperature as myself. I take blankets
and extra sweaters if I go anywhere. It is just a battle most of the year
with the temperature fluctuations in my body. I also have trouble sleeping
and have more 31 years. What does everybody take for sleeping. I've
used Ambien for over 10 years and it isn't very effective at all. Is there
anything else to take. I also take 2 .25generic Xanax throughout the

When I can't sleep I take lots
of late night TV. You don't need a prescription and the only side
effect is you become a zombie! Ya, I'm cured!

I'm almost the same as both of you guys except when I get warm I feel
anxious and if I overheat too bad I start to have trouble breathing with
congestion and when I get too cold my arms posture up to my chin up and I can't
put them back down. Also, I will start to shiver and my teeth will start
to chatter to where I have to hold my jaw open so I do not chip my teeth.
I have shivered for up to five hours because of being too cold and even put a
mouth guard in so I do not chip my teeth.

Same here! Relaxing the arms is close to impossible! I, too, have shivered for many hours
to warm up under 3 blankets. Therefore it took me hours to get to sleep. I'd cover my
head with 2-3 blankets and the sheet!

I still cover my head at bedtime or if I'm laying flat resting. It's a comfort zone under something.

If I'm too warm .. I can cool off almost instantly. If I'm cold ... it's hell. I spent 35 yrs in the northeast and
my muscles "learned" to be tense. So even though I'm in la-la land in the southwest ... I notice that I
consciously have to will my shoulders and neck to relax.

I hope to never have to live in a cold climate again.
