Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park to be specific. That fire trail leads up to
the west ridge which was added to the park a while back, though I don't
think it's officially open to the public yet (hence the need for gate
jumping). If you go the right way and hop another gate you end up near the
north end of the park. From there you can head back in the general
direction of Sunol with park exits available on Longview, Golden Eagle Way,
Foothill north of Sunol, Foothill in Sunol, and (if you'r up for an
unapproved exit) at the end of Kilkare.
It's a very nice area.

I spotted them on my local Craigslist so of course I had to buy them. The

If you'd like to try these tires, I'll pass them along to you for no

Well done, DP. :) I suggest putting that response in the Best
Posts Ever list.

For your friend who is Tri-curious: have him buy a reliable, heavier than
necessary bike (Atlantis, Sam with drops and shifter/brakes or even a
Roadeo) so that he can train on it. It's weight training or train
heavy, race light, or whatever. In preparation for race days, he can rent
a super specific Tri bike from the LBS for a week or so (to give time
to get used to the handling). Then the Atlantis gets ridden often, is ready
for more adventures after Tri season is over, and will last him a
lifetime.

[RBW] Re: Thunder Burt Wisdom...

2015-05-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
We'll get to try them together, Hugh! Here's what sold me on supple as a
priority for tires:

-- I put on and rode my well worn Duremes 50mm on my Hunqapillar. I rode
the 5 mile trail and dirt road I ride to get anywhere. The ride was more
jarring than on the Quickbeam Clement MSO's (which are rather supple, even
for the 60 TPI casing). The ride was jarring enough that it bothered my
brain (stunning to get a glimpse of just how fine a razor edge I ride even
on good brain days!) so rather than the planned ride of 20+ miles to
check out how snowy the trails are, I turned around.

-- Interestingly, at faster descent speeds the ride was much smoother than
the slower speeds on the climb up the pass, I presume because higher speeds
equal greater forces that caused even the Duremes to comply with the road.
Grin.

I also opted for the snake skin, though I was tempted to try the lightest,
most supple version to see how that went.

[RBW] Re: Hunq's Slipping Seatpost

2015-05-01 Thread Leslie
Ron,

On the old Rovers to which I'm referring, the steel chassis we're painted, and
the steel body cappings were galvanized; the zinc coating was much closer to
aluminum and wouldn't suffer galvanic corrosion. But on locations where a
non-galvanized steel bracket was riveted to the aluminum body tub, there is
usually massive amounts of corrosion of the aluminum. I've replaced many
aluminum Rover body panels due to the amount of corrosion present.

I wasn't calling you out in reference to what's happening in bikes; only
countering the statement that aluminum/steel galvanic corrosion is a myth: it's
not a myth, it's fact. Aluminum is often used as an anode to protect steel.

Thinking about it further, another significant difference between a what
happens in a Rover and a bicycle is that there are currents present in a
vehicle, w/ the engine/battery, starter/alternator, lighting/wiring, ground
connections, etc...

On a bicycle (well, unlit bicycles), there shouldn't be any electrical currents
present, at least not in a considerable amount. I think that's why aluminum
against painted steel on a bike doesn't have a problem, the way Rovers can.

I've damaged plenty of sidewalls, but the only time it ever mattered was
when riding tubeless. The Snakeskin sidewalls are fine, but you'll be
sacrificing a bit of suppleness. Definitely gaining protection in the
bargain, so nothing wrong with that!

That's what I get for reading so many reviews from people I don't know (I

but perhaps I needlessly sacrificed supple sidewalls.

jarring than on the Quickbeam Clement MSO's (which are rather supple, even
for the 60 TPI casing).

[RBW] New ACW mugs inspired by the orange...

2015-05-01 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
X0-1 of course!

Working with a couple forum members doing a little QA, it was decided the
ACW needed some steel. Stainless steel that is.

Some song and dance later, and I'm super happy with the result, and the
orange printing came out just as I'd hoped. This group has always been
source of inspiration when it comes to bike related matters, so it's cool
to work in little ties when doing projects.

I don't have many riding companions into the same rambling type rides I
enjoy, so most often I'm wheeling alone. When I see ride reports,
coffeeoutside posts, and bag pictures that are adorned with ACW goodies,
it's a pretty cool way of partaking in the journey. One day, I hope to EARN
an entmoot patch, drink the beer at the end of a Redlands Strada Rossa, and
show up in ONE of Manny's S24O photos. Until then ladies and
gents...caffeinate!

it is not a myth, it's real chemistry at work.

Now, I will concede, it may not a big deal for bicycles; most of mine I
keep in good enough shape, that I've not had any problems w/ such, but, the
science is legit that galvanic corrosion between aluminum and steel does
 occur

[RBW] First the tubes failed then the pump!?

2015-05-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
Last night I discovered the rear tires on both the Ram Saluki were flat.
I took them off but couldn't find a hole in either, even under water. I
put the tires back together and pump them up to 80 60 lbs respectively.
This morning each had lost noticeable amounts of air. Repeated the test
(both Kendra tubes btw.) with the same results. Decided to simply replace
the tubes. Put the Saluki's 650b together with a new Schwalbe tube. When
I tried to blow it up with my well worn Air Hammer floor pump, the pump
jammed. Disassembled the pump, cleaned it up, but finally decided it
needed a new O ring. Ten miles round trip to the hardware store. Now
reassembled the pump seems to work in reverse! The handle feels very firm
when I lift it up, but when I let go the suction pulls the pump more than
half way down.

I think I'll go roto till the garden.

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2015-05-01 Thread KC
This info is very helpful as we will be purchasing a carrier immediately.
Turns out the fork paint damage on my beautiful new bike was likely caused
by the current carrier (Yakima hitch-mount swing away). Although we
couldn't figure out how it could be happening, the person loading the
carrier (rude to name him) has been extremely concerned about my bike and
tried a new position yesterday resulting in nice scrapes on the back side
of the frame. Best guess is even though they were loaded at the far ends
of the 4-bike carrier, my bike was attacked by the other bike's brake
lever. I will likely have to take Keven's advice to stop crying and put on
clear nail polish and then cover with reflective tape. At this point I
will be quite nicely reflecting on one side of the bike. Since I'm hoping
to not continue the process and the carrier loader is trying to avoid being
killed, looks like we will probably buy a new carrier immediately.

It kills me to see my mixtie hanging askew on the hanging racks (and why is
only my bike getting scratched up?), especially when we add the 2 kiddo's
bikes into the mix. I've considered the attachment to create the cross bar
on my bike, but it seems like an accident waiting to happen. Somehow it
seems a platform would be more organized. We have other hanging carriers
(quit using them because we replaced with a swing-away to have access to
the back of the vehicles). It helped me to see the above comments and
wanted to see if there are any updates that would be of use to us. After
reading the above, I think I am right about the platform being maybe a
little better for the mix of bikes and am a little leery of further
experimentation with my bike on the hanging carrier. I don't think we
could easily handle a roof mount and the roof top is reserved for
a kayak anyway..

We drive a Subaru Outback and Jeep Grand Cherokee, moving the carrier back
and forth. If we had a 4-bike carrier on, we probably wouldn't get out of
our own driveway without scraping so raising the hitch up would probably be
important. Most of the time it would be 2 bikes - standard road bike with
fenders and my Cheviot. But we also need the option to bring along 2 bikes
for young kids. I've been looking at the ones for 2 that accommodate an
add-on for an additional 2. It would be most useful for it to be
swing-away so we could easily access everything. It is important that we
can secure the bikes well as they could be unattended out of sight
sometimes (although we are careful about that). And loading/unloading
shouldn't be an ordeal so we can it frequently - we have a mix of short (30
min to 1 hr) drives to start riding and long trips.

I will look at all the recommendations above, but appreciate any updated
input. Thanks.

(I think my optimal solution is a diesel sprinter with 4 captains chairs
and a fold-down sofa in the rear to seat 3 and sleep 2 as queen size bed,
with plenty of storage space between sofa captains chairs for neatly
organized equipment, partnered with a 23' toy hauler for more
accommodations for a longer trip. I think we could make that work. Makes a
new carrier look pretty inexpensive, even if unplanned)

not exactly, because different things work for different people. I agree
with back pain dialing in reach and saddle height is very important. The
way we lean on the bars as we get older wasn't the way we rode when we were
young.
And saddle height could be a factor in circulation pinch on the pedals.
Our friend doesn't have the appearance of pain - it's the real thing, and
we're throwing out ideas to help him sort it out. Somebody else may have a
contradictory solution to their personal problem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2015-05-01 Thread Tim Gavin
Be aware that the platform-type carriers made for more than 2 bikes usually
require a 2 receiver hitch. 2 hitch receivers can be hard to find for
cars and car-based SUVs (like the Subaru).

You can add extenders/adapters to neck the 2 hitch down to a smaller 1.25
hitch, but they are much less stable than a direct connection to a proper
2 receiver. Adapters usually cause the entire hitch platform to wobble.
When I've had to use them, I added a big racheting tie-down through the
rack and to something under the bumper at both ends. This stabilizes the
platform but adds inconvenience.

I agree that platform-type, trailer hitch mounted bike racks are much
better at taking care of your bike than the hanging style. But they are
more difficult to fit to vehicles.

Based on my experience, 1 Up USA has the best platform racks. MUSA to
boot. You can extend them to up to 4 bikes. They're very, very well made,
with smart, convenient features. Not cheap, but good racks never are.

carrier (rude to name him) has been extremely concerned about my bike and
tried a new position yesterday resulting in nice scrapes on the back side
of the frame.

It kills me to see my mixtie hanging askew on the hanging racks (and why
is only my bike getting scratched up?), especially when we add the 2
kiddo's bikes into the mix. I've considered the attachment to create the
cross bar on my bike, but it seems like an accident waiting to happen.
Somehow it seems a platform would be more organized. We have other
hanging carriers (quit using them because we replaced with a swing-away to
have access to the back of the vehicles). It helped me to see the above
comments and wanted to see if there are any updates that would be of use to
us. After reading the above, I think I am right about the platform being
maybe a little better for the mix of bikes and am a little leery of further
experimentation with my bike on the hanging carrier.

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2015-05-01 Thread WETH
KC,
I appreciate the opportunity to update my experience. I went with the
Holywood platform
rack:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QJC4AY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8psc=1
At the time, REI was out of the one I wanted from them. The basic set-up
of this rack holds two bikes, and I got the extension which expands
carrying capacity to 4 bikes. I LOVE IT! (I don't usually gush over
products, but this is the best way I have used to transported my bikes on
the outside of a vehicle.) I have mounted bikes on the roof and hung them
off of racks attached to the back of my car, and for me, this platform rack
is a winner. A former reoccurring nightmare had me losing a load of bikes
on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in peak summer traffic; I sleep peacefully
now, at least in regard to transporting bikes.

The rack attaches to a hitch purchased from and installed by Uhaul for
under $120.00 and in under 1 hour. The rack attaches securely and there is
minimal sway and total peace of mind. I appreciated not having to hoist
the bikes too high to get them on the rack, and they are held securely in
place. Only one padded arm/hook touches the bike frame. If you keep the
rack attached to the hitch without bikes, it will fold up out of the way.
I do not scrape on my sloping driveway with 4 bikes on the back of a
Subaru Forester, though I do make my teenage sons wait to get in the car
until I am at the bottom of the driveway.

A few negatives, as it is not perfect: 1)The rack is often mounted on the
car in the summers and has developed a bit of surface rust. 2) the padded
arm, which is lowered onto the toptube of each bike to secure it, will
leave behind some black scuffing/residue on the paint (no nicks or chips in
the paint, however; a cloth between frame and arm would likely solve this).
 3) the rack is heavy and not something I would want to take on and off
several times a week. 4) It carries 4 bikes well with the attachment, but
the 3rd bike is a bit difficult to get on. 5) It is expensive.

I am going to get a hitch installed on my Mazda3 so that I can carry my
bike on this rack when I do not need to haul multiple bikes with the Subaru.

All the best,
Erl, who is happy not to be lifting bikes over his head onto the roof of
the car in Kensington, MD

Great and appreciated input. I'll look at that rack. It sounds like we
could start off with the capability to carry 2 and then add for 2 more in
a while so the cost isn't as bad up front..
My husband says we have 2 on both - I know we put the heavy duty hitch on
the Subaru. Used to tow a good sized boat behind the jeep I think we
planned for consistency even though Subaru has limited tow capacity. It's
the last think I want to spend the money on but I'm feeling like I may as
well just be dragging the bike along behind the car the way I'm going now.

Good to know about the ground clearance. We still might need something to
raise it up as we start off with a fairly steep driveway that we might not
 get out of.

Really appreciate the offer to check it out but we are in SoCal. Spent a
month up your way and I don't think the (same) rack did any damage the
entire time it was on the jeep.. I really think the first damage was after
we returned and used the rack on the Subaru. Not sure why it would make a
 difference, but.

Interesting to see a resurrected thread also to be able to update from
my experience swapping hanging rack to a platform rack.

The hanging rack was reasonably quick to load, but the combination of
scratching the frames, and irregular top-tubes made the process a pain and
the top-tube converters lowered the bikes that they dragged on the smallest
incline (meaning having to move the car, load the bikes... you get the
 picture)

I thought I'd be smart and last year waited for my REI member 20% off
coupon and use it to get a killer deal on the KUAT platform rack - which
would have worked except that it ended up being backordered, then delayed
for an additional month - and then another. In frustration I contacted KUAT
who tole me they had stock and didn't understand why REI couldn't deliver.
REI had a different story. After 4 months of waiting I lost patience and
bit the bullet on a more expensive, direct from the manufacturer rack from
 1UpUSA.

The rack is super easy to load, can be expanded with additional trays (I
went with a 1+1) and is extremely well built. It was a really expensive
purchase (and one which I wince even now when I think too hard about it),
but I am extremely happy with the rack. It is rock-solid and accommodates
all the bicycles in the household without protest. I really would recommend
you check it out at 1upusa.com

If you're in/near Riv HQ (Walnut Creek), i'd be happy to let you check it
 out -

taken the tires off of my Saluki and given them to my wife. So I needed to
repair tires on the Ram Trek and replace new tires on the Saluki and
ordered new tires. Those new Pari-Motos aren't too hard to mount but they
are hard to mount straight. Having gotten them on the bike, brakes
adjusted and blown up, I spun the front and realized it wasn't very
straight. I walk around and spun the back to check it out. That's when
the front tube blew. Snake bite.

I'm reduced to eating popcorn and having a glass of wine.

MKS does a similar Lyotard-Berthet knockoff, as the Urban Platform Ezy Superior.

http://www.mkspedal.com/English/catalog4.htm

Both the superelegant WI version and the MKS version are much bigger than the
original Lyotard pedals, which are all but unusable for anyone with feet bigger
than about Size 7, unless you have toeclips. MKS also does a wire-cage
half-clip similar to Bruce Gordon's (my recollection of the timeline is that
MKS had them before Bruce did). Outside Outfitters has the pedals for
$38http://www.outsideoutfitters.com/ps-27010-195-mks-urban-platform-pedals.aspx
 and the toeclips for
$21http://www.outsideoutfitters.com/ps-27009-195-mks-stainless-steel-toe-clips-straps.aspx,
so it's a fairly inexpensive experiment.

Personally, I gave up on Lyotard Berthets for anything except retro-fetish
reasons; they're too small for my 10.5 Amurrrican feet, and they're made out of
a wussy soft steel - the kicktabs bend if you look at them crosseyed. The

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2015-05-01 Thread KC

With one possible exception: I can't get the seatpost to stop slipping
down. Despite tightening the bolt to so hard that the allen hole is
starting to strip, it still inches down as I ride, and we had to stop six
times on the ride in this morning to raise the seat back up. Very
frustrating. I had thought that maybe the brake cable hanger was
interfering with the seat tube somehow, but I don't see how that can be
avoided, given the shape of the hanger and the fact that it has to remain
 attached to the seatpost bolt.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
 Best to all,

[RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle Repair - Broken Tension Shackle

Hi Sean,

I'm just a home mechanic, and I've done it. It really wasn't that hard. I
replaced the entire leather top with some saddle leather that I cut and
shaped and it's worked out really well.

I put it together with brass screws and nuts and honestly it's worked great
for 6 months like that, but I bought the copper rivets (which come in a box
of 100 or more) I always intended to finish with the rivets. I don't
think that's the hardest part, I've just been busy and it's so comfortable
that I don't want to stop using it.

In fact if you feel overwhelmed I might be willing to do it with you or for
you...if you are in the bay area.

did the bolt brake? if the leather is still attached well to the nose
piece you might be able to replace the bolt without removing all the rivets.

Do you have photos of the problem.?

something was wrong. It turns out that part of the tension shackle, the
part that connects the nose of the saddle to the saddle frame, had broken.
 Bummer.

The saddle has at least 12,000 miles, and the leather is in great shape,
so I want to have this problem fixed. A new tension shackle can be
obtained very inexpensively (only $3.50 for the chromed steel version).
However, as I have never carried out this repair, I am looking for some
guidance / encouragement / advice. A quick internet search turned up a few
good tidbits, but I'm hoping for some help here from the experts. Is this
a relatively easy repair that a mechanic with limited skills can complete
or would I be much better off shipping the saddle to a qualified repair
 expert?

If this is not a home mechanic job, I would appreciate advice on where to
have it fixed - ideally in the USA.

 Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Hunq's Slipping Seatpost

2015-05-01 Thread Keith Muller
Kevin,

I'm glad to hear that what I did to your Hunq seemed to fix the problem.
Let me know if you have any other issues. Did you find a replacement bolt
and nut for the seat cluster. Hopefully you've had a chance to get your
new bike dirty!

Best,

Keith

Just finished building my Hunqapillar over the weekend and rode it 20+

very favorite bike stamped all over it.
 Best to all,
 Kevin

Maybe interested in Tech Deluxe 7, maybe interested in Tallux 6 or 8.

Probably not interested in the reg ol' technomic, as i'm being a finish

Thanks!

Don't know how these compare with the 2.1, but I've got several rides on
the tubeless Nano 700x40 (on my disc cx bike). They roll very well on
pavement, gravel and dirt. Lack traction on snow (as you might expect).

[RBW] Re: So is it the pedals or is it the shoes that count?

2015-05-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
I would suggest you begin with a visit to a good podiatrist. Find one with
good experience and a practice that doesn't focus on lots of surgery.

I have pain which I think is similar to yours, burning in the ball. Some
years ago I had a cyst removed there which had caused me a great deal of
pain, but it has never fully recovered. I switched from a surgery focused
podiatrist to one content with less invasive modalities and that has
helped. In my case he looked at my foot and said, Your problem is that
you're not fat enough. I liked him right away, but unfortunately he was
only referring to my feet. He gave me a script for a pain ointment (which
unwisely I didn't fill) and encouraged me to get good, cushioned sport
inserts, and to replace them regularly. That has helped. I have a follow
up appointment with him this month.

The second thing I do is vary the pedals I use. On my Ram tandem I use
Speedplay Frogs (I know clipless) and on the Saluki I use the Paul's Urban
pedal. That gives me some variety of contact point.

For shoes, the worst combination ever has been a pair of minimalist
sneakers and the Pauls. Now I stay with shoes that have relatively rigid
soles - Keen Austins Keen Commuters, both of which can be used with or
without clips. I also like the Keen Austins regular version for walking
around because that has also been a source of foot pain. I suspect I am
paying the price for a career as a hospital chaplain who walked the halls
night day.

Good luck with this.

Michael

*Weigh in and tell me if you think that with the right kind of platform,
you can ride any street shoe you want, no matter how good or atrocious the
 sole is.*
*Or, if its the shoe that counts.*

Interested to know if there really is an answer to this before deciding to
sink money into either shoes or pedals first. Experimenting with bike
 componentry gets expensive fast.

In Just Ride, the author says its the pedal that counts only. Any footwear
works with a good platform pedal.

*No need to mention the pedal/shoe as others are weighing in on that on
 another thread here.*
*No need to mention strength of feet, as we have already covered that
issue, and that is a different matter for debate.*

I remember riding the last three centuries on my MKS Touring pedals. All
 with different shoes.
The first pair left me hurting (Old Nike Sneakers).
The second pair left me hurting (LLBean Mocks).
The third pair didn't hurt at all on that third century, but now they do
when I ride with them (New Nike sneakers).
I do get other minor foot complaints outside of century riding. So I think
a pedal/shoe change is in order.

Michael, it may be time to consult an expert, ie a good podiatrist. If you're

You know what I ride and you know it is dramatically different from a

want a practical bike that you can ride in triathlons, that will look
vastly different on your 10 race days a year and be 99% as fast as riding a
tri-bike, while also being fun to ride on race day and every other day,
that allows you to train by exploring dirt roads and paths you didn't know
existed until they beckoned to your front wheel as you approached, that you
would have missed on your tri-bike even if you had seen it because you were
focused on the road ten feet in front of you because your handlebars were
ten inches below your seat and your neck didn't bend any further forward
and even if you had inexplicably glimpsed this gravel wonder out of the
corner of your eye would would have had to deny your inner exuberant,
adventuresome kid because your tires are the width of your thumb and

why you are asking me, I'm your guy! Otherwise, what ARE you thinking?
