[RBW] Entmoot bike decision

2014-07-09 Thread BSWP
Life always presents options, what makes it interesting is how we choose.

For me, it's a decision over which bike to ride to the Entmooot, between
the very logical and nicely-appointed LongLow Custom, and the much more
spartan QuickBeam (orange!), which is where my gut is pointing. I think
with the front rack, and a borrowed rear rack & basket, the QB will do
nicely.

Then, the next decision is whether to ride from the Ferry Building, over
the bridge, or look up at the bridge from the ferry, and ride from
Larkspur. Hmm...

Shipping cost and time to deliver - I leave on a long ride next weekend,

I've decided to take my Carradice on the upcoming ride, in tandem with the

[RBW] Velcro straps for platform pedals

2014-04-30 Thread BSWP
I've a pair of the delightful Thin Gripsters on both my Riv's, and am very
happy with them. But for longer rides, like over 100km, I find myself

good experience with velcro straps on the thin platform pedals, can

This. Or, just bend a dogleg strut to get around the brake. The strut is

You could get all fancy and do the other side to match, if that's your

must have given some adjustment, too, with their barrels, no?

[RBW] Bosco interrupted?

2014-02-04 Thread BSWP
Just wondering and pondering on the wonderful ponderosa of possibilities,
and so I'll ask - has anyone put reverse-action brake levers on Bosco bars,
and also run the cables along the bars, under tape, to a pair of
interruptors at the stem? Seems like that setup could provide a dreamy
surface for hand positions with brakes at both ends, and nothing inbetween
to catch your hands as they move forth and back.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot!?

2014-01-27 Thread BSWP
What Grant calls "rough around the edges... in a way that adds to its
humility" (paraphrasing) is what my Italian family members call "malfatti."
Taken literally, it means roughly-hewn, but in practice it's a loving term
bestowed on something made by hand (wine, furniture, even tonight's dinner)
that has, maybe, some rough edges but is in an overall sense delicious and
attractive.

If the Cheviot has those qualities, then all the better. I think it's a
beautiful bike.

[RBW] Mixte frame design question

2014-01-08 Thread BSWP
There's a picture of a 60cm Betty Foy on Riv's blug, and it's the first I
remember seeing where the top/diaga-tube looks to meet its rear
counterparts in a clean straight line. On others, and I guess smaller sized
frames, the top tube meets the rear tubes with a slight kink. Again, I must
not have paid attention to other images, or to the frames in person. But
why the difference? Is it to keep the step-through height of the top tube
identical across frame sizes? It's no doubt identical in rigidity and
stoutness, but quite different in appearance, one size to another. I like
the look of a single line from top of head tube to rear axle.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike siting: Cheviut/Cheviot/Chevrolet?

I think the new Mixte will be a winner, for riders and for RBW. The longer
chainstays fit in with the unracer mindset, and the color is fantastic - no
one does Orange like Rivendell. RBW gets to retain the lugs they've already
invested in, which can't hurt. If I ever get money ahead, I'm buying one
for my wife, who no matter her protestations about not needing a new bike,
nonetheless gets more tired each year throwing her leg over the Brooks on
her Bridgestone XO-5.

[RBW] Brief Diablo ride report

2013-12-29 Thread BSWP
I rode up Mt. Diablo for the first time last week, a short loop with friend
Mark on his Bike Friday. From Walnut Creek BART we rode south through a
sleepy downtown, just awakening to its post-xmas shopping crush, past
conservatively trimmed driveways, and on an old railway now converted to
recreational pathway. Somewhere between Alamo and Danville we turned east,
toward the high peak, and began our slow ascent. It's still a revelation
for me to ride the bike on roads I usually take the motorcycle on... the
difference in sounds and sights is delightful. The weather was perfect for
riding, if even a touch too warm on the windless south face. A few stops to
cool off in the shade, and then a final walk to the summit parking lot,
proving that all bicycles have three speeds - sitting, standing, and
walking. The descent was thrilling - endless drops and twisting turns down
the mountain and out along North Gate road, the new vee-brakes giving
neither pulse nor squeal, only steady braking. Somehow, we managed to
emerge through the vast sprawl of suburban homes at the buzzing expressway
of Ygnacio Valley road, a route most decidedly UNfriendly to bicycles, and
then snuck in a quick visit to RBBH.

A first attempt at video/still/banjo montage proves it happened:

[RBW] Re: Off-road excursion, not intentional

2013-12-22 Thread BSWP
Yes, the most basic rule for bicycling and motorcycling is the same - look
to where you want to go. The flip side of that is that, when you look at
(fixate on) the pothole or ditch or oncoming vehicle, you WILL ride into
it. When I'm riding twisty roads, on either machine, one trick I use when
coming up to a hairpin, especially one I can't see through due to trees or
side of the mountain, is to say to myself "expect a truck" and then keep my
gaze looking past the apex of the turn. On the few occasions when a car or
truck appears there, I'm not so freaked out by it, and can continue my turn
smoothly.

[RBW] Re: Which RBW Velosophies have worked for you? Which haven't?

2013-12-02 Thread BSWP
I was trying to remember how I stumbled upon RBW... and it was the
moustache bars! For some crazy reason, I put 'em on an old REI XR steel
"cross" bike in the mid 90's and I was hooked. It must have been from that
order (phone? mail?) that I got a catalogue, and started buying Pine Tar
soap and cloth bar tape. Things would have stayed there, except I came into
a bit of scratch from an insurance settlement after being doored in west
Berkeley, and called up Grant to get a custom frame to replace the damaged
Centurion I had been riding. The LongLow came in 1998, the Catalogues and
Readers kept coming (I have 'em all), and I've been a loyal customer and
big fan ever since. The 66cm QuickBeam has been a delight, and gets as much
use as the LongLow.

What has worked for me, most of all, is the velosophy of "*Just Ride*."
It's nothing to do with particular kit or style, it's "just" getting out
and riding, unencumbered by worries over how I look, or what I'm riding, or
what cool thing I do or don't have. A big part of "just riding" for me is
non-indexed shifting... Grant once described friction shifting as, I think
it was, noisy, but "honest" noise, that directed you to trim and get the
lever in synch with the cogs. That's been great advice, and it's stuck with
me.

As to gear, it's all been said above. I like M'bars for short rides, and
Noodles for long and multi-day rides. Leather saddles. Conspicuity. Thin
platform pedals. Nitto race cages. And 32 or 33mm tires on road bikes.

[RBW] Re: Holy Moly. 30 minute Drone Delivery from Amazon. Need a bike part "real soon"?

2013-12-02 Thread BSWP
I'm with Tom's dog... I don't like it, either. I see this as further
assault on the intrinsic elements that comprise the fabric that holds us
all together. If I need a bike part, I check to see if RBW has it, or my
LBS, and order/buy accordingly. I usually don't mind waiting, and most
packages can get here withing a couple days. If I really need it right now,
or if I just want to browse what's new, I walk/ride over to Hank 'n Frank,
or Missing Link, and buy over the counter.

[RBW] Re: Light camping stove options

2013-11-26 Thread BSWP
I will never, ever, use a canister stove. They are loathsome detestable
abominations. My backpacking and car camping has been almost exclusively
with old and new Optimus kerosene stoves, but I placed an order for the
solostove after seeing the link here. It looks like it can fill a niche for
bike camping without liquid/gas fuel, and the small alcohol burner option
fits in nicely.

Re: [RBW] Re: SimpleQuickOneBeam Project - Blue Sky Features - What would you like to see?

2013-11-26 Thread BSWP
Jimmy Hutch nails it. I think a simple standard for phat tires is the BG
Rock-N-Road, at 43mm. I tried them on my QuickBeam, and they were just too
tight for comfort between the chainstays. Open those up just a smidge, and
it's there.

And an accent colour on the head tube, too, please.

Oh, and put the front cable boss for the rear brake in the very center of
the top tube, to make a cleaner line for those who run their rear brakes
from the left handlebar.

[RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-25 Thread BSWP
Sounds like the deal is on - anyone who has cried and moaned about wanting
a QB/SO can now put their name down for a SimpleBeam/QuickOne, and they'll
get a unique frame, better/different than the old ones. I'm really happy
with my 66cm QB - strong, light, rackable, cantilevered - and glad to hear
that RBW is open to bringing it back, in slightly updated guise. Short of
some NOS falling out of the attic, this is the way for new frames to find
new homes.

[RBW] Re: Why no more Quickbeam/ SimpleOne?

2013-11-23 Thread BSWP
I am loving my 66cm orange QuickBeam. I have a DOS ENO freewheel on one
side, and a fixed cog on the other. With JackBrowns and Nitto BullMoose
bars, it brings smiles to all who see it, and to me especially when I ride
it. But I also understand RBW's economics on this, it was an expensive
frame, much the same price as a road frame with rear attachment point for a
derailleur. Maybe there's a future frame coming that will have an
attachment for shifting as well as semi-horizontal rear forks to allow for
wheelbase adjustment.

Thanks, fellow riders. I was comparing to my single-speed QuickBeam... ;-)

And here is a nice note from Sheldon Brown:

and the wheel is correctly dished, the left side will be quite a bit
looser. You should still check the left
side for uniformity of tension."

[RBW] spoke tension question

2013-11-19 Thread BSWP
I just noticed that the spokes on the (six-speed) freewheel side of the
rear wheel are all tighter than the spokes on the left... yet the wheel
seems centered between the dropouts, and spins true. Does this seem right?
Shouldn't spokes on both sides settle into some sense of balance? My
tension-testing technique is crude - just pinching adjacent spokes where
they cross, which tells me slacker on left side than on right.

Re: [RBW] Data point for mini-V-brakes and Nitto mini front rack

2013-11-11 Thread BSWP
If I had gone with 6mm shorter arms, the brake cable would likely have hung
up on/over/under the rack bolt. Here's a picture of the cable coming over
my rack, you can see how close it is. These are the 90mm RX6 arms.

http://diesel.smugmug.com/Bici/Rivendell-LongLow/i-d6xJ7sF

But I agree, if clearance from rack or other obstruction is not a concern,
there are shorter (more minier) V-brakes than the RX6. And shorter arms
means better performance with "normal" pull levers.

[RBW] Data point for mini-V-brakes and Nitto mini front rack

2013-11-09 Thread BSWP
I'm trying V-brakes on my old LongLow custom, to see what the fuss is all
about and whether they can stop me better than the cantilevers I've been
using. I found a set of Tektro RX6 brakes on eBay, they have reach of 90mm.
Some folks might call these mini-V's, but they're certainly not as long as
the "standard" V-brakes. The constraints on my LongLow are the current
brake levers (Tiagras on Noodles), the interrupters, and the Nitto
mini-rack up front.

I was very pleased to note that the brake cable *just* clears the mounting
bolt on the Nitto rack. If I had used shorter V-brakes, the cable would
have hit the bolt. I was also very pleased that the existing levers pull
enough cable for efficient stopping without bottoming on the handlebars. I
can quick-release the brakes with a simple tug, not a problem, but I also
have some adjustability with the barrels on the interrupters.

They look good, very streamlined along the fork legs. And they brake quite
nicely, so far. Sunday I'll give 'me a test on Claremont descent.

[RBW] Re: Possible One Pot Meal for S24O

A perfect complement to a S24O is a food dehydrator. You can prepare soups,
pasta, even meat dishes... at home, perfectly seasoned, then dry them
overnight and seal in a ziplock baggie. At camp all you do is rehydrate and
heat, and you have fool-proof good-tasting food. I am doing this more and
more on backpacking trips, where I feed 10-15 people at meal time, and it's
become a real boon. Saves time and weight, and preserves good taste.

the idea that the groove will help collect water spray and guide the water
to the ends of the fender. Who knows... this might not work at all. I'll
report back in the spring.

[RBW] Re: 70 mile ride today

2013-09-14 Thread BSWP
I worked up to 70-mile days this spring, and found it pretty fun once my
ass got used to the extended saddle time. A key thing was feeling, for the
last 25 or so miles, that I could still go another five miles... and after
those five miles, well, I could again answer affirmatively. So it went ,
through to the end. As nice as RBW models are to ride for five minutes,
they're equally comfortable after five hours.

[RBW] Re: Celebrity Riv Sighting

2013-09-07 Thread BSWP
Okay, treading delicately off-topic... The road from Huntington to Kaiser
is initially smooth and wide, then becomes extremely narrow and
mosty-paved. By the top, you're dealing with sand and gravel. From there
onto Florence or Edison, it's rough in many spots - but could be ridden on
anything from 23mm racer tires to phat Jack Browns, up to whatever would
fit. Watch out for potholes, sand, gravel, rocks, and most of all... yahoos
in bloated frigates hogging the road, especially on the return, where
you're often left with NO shoulder and a steep cliffy dropoff.

I might could do it on my QuickBeam with the 19 tooth rear, but would
probably be happier on the LongLow with its six-speed rear cassette. Both
have Jack Browns.

[RBW] Re: Tips for Bikepacking with a backpack?

2013-09-06 Thread BSWP
Let's assume he has a lightweight internal frame pack, or an ultralight
frameless pack. Either way, he'll wantt the weight both low down, and also
close in to his body. The closer to his back, the less leverage the gear
will have when he swings side-to-side. It will be especially important that
the pack have compression straps on the sides, so all pack contents can be
made immobile.

My Kelty Serac (1978 external frame pack) would not be a good choice for
such a ride.

Have fun.

Well, it wasn't like sighting Manny, but I was off backpacking last week,
out of Florence Lake, and wearing my new blue-pocket MUSA shorts. Trudging
through the forest on the first day, we were passing a cheerful group of
kids and their family when a man in the group spoke out about my shorts -
and he was *also* wearing a pair of MUSA shorts. I didn't get his name, but
I noticed the very interesting knapsack on his back... and commented on its
fine lines. He noted that is was Grant's pack - maybe a prototype of
something new coming out? - yes, actually really Grant's pack, just
borrowed for the trip. The folks in my Sierra Club group were even
impressed.

[RBW] Re: Camping near Pt. Reyes

2013-07-21 Thread BSWP
So many options... Camping by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot? How far
away would still be considered "near"? And, what's your tolerance for
not-quite-legal campsites?

Sam P. Taylor is a CA State Park on the road out to Point Reyes from San
Rafael, very nice for car camping. There are primitive walk-in backcountry
sites in Point Reyes proper, you will need reservations at high times like
summer. And you can find dozens of small discreet spots along trails and
fire roads, like Bolinas Ridge, if you're careful about minimizing your
visibility. But rangers do patrol and issue citations, and a campfire will
give away your location.

Re: [RBW] Slightly OT: Motorcycle Riding and Bicycles

2013-07-20 Thread BSWP
I ride a 2000 BMW GS 1150, and before that rode a 1987 BMW R80. Are they
Riv-ish motos? Maybe, sort of, but don;t obsess on that. Bicycling and
motorcycling are entirely different, share much of the same qualities, and
utterly complement each other. Leaning into turns, looking through the
turn, knowing which brake to use, on and on... doing both makes you
appreciate doing each on its own, all the more. Like today, when I rode the
LongLow from Berkeley out to Walnut Creek to see an old friend, get some
bits at RBW, and ride back. Claremont and Fish Ranch, in both directions...

The shoes from *Quoc Pham* look pretty good. If only they came in my extra
large size, I would get a pair.

[RBW] Re: Solo Rides and Pedicab PhotoShoot.

2013-07-17 Thread BSWP
Gruel is good, and the pictures prove it.

Say, how are you carrying your camera? In front basket, or slung across
your chest in a case? I have a new camera,, heavier than the old one, and
need to figure out how I'll carry it. I'm leaning toward a padded case and
a wrist strap.
