True Types Font Server for RH 8.0
For the heck of it, I installed some true type fonts on my RH 8.0 box, under /usr/local/fonts/ttf. I have the following installed: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ttf]# ls -a . .. arial.ttf AURABESH.TTF BATTLEST.TTF fonts.dir fonts.scale NEUROPOL.TTF [EMAIL PROTECTED] ttf]# For some reason the arial.ttf does not appear when I have a choice of fonts to select while all others on the list above do. RE: Zonet KVM Switch
Never used that switch before but I have an Aten 16 port KVM rackmount/LCD monitor Works great going from novell,winnt4, w2k, redhat 7.3 8.0 . My old KVM was a belkin 4 port no problem with that either. Is the KVM powered? Does it supply signal to the systems when they are not being viewed? The KVM is powered thru the ps/2 connection. One box is ATX powersupply and when I plug in the ps/2 connector, the light on the KVM comes on. The other box is an AT box and doesn't have current always on. I'm not sure if the KVM supplies signal when they are not turned on. My guess not, cause the OpenBSD box freaks out when I switch over to RH 8.0 box. It starts to thrown random characters to the screen and that annoying beep from the computer speaker. thanks -Chris = GTFG GAIM ID: cmmiller1973 __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I just (want) to become very familiar with the keyboard commands. Hi Chris, I think there is some basic confusion here - You want to know how to read and respond to your email? You want to know what commands you use from the keyboard to do these things? Correct so far? Correct, for example at the prompt, I type 'mail' and it either takes me to my user's mailbox or it says, no mail...this is Sendmail running, correct? Ok here is some vocabulary: (off the top of my head so be skeptical) MUA- Mail user agent - the program you use to read your email and send out emails, examples are mutt elm, pine Eudora, outlook etc.. This is the program you use all the time and the program you think of as my email program MDA - mail delivery agent - procmail, formail (I think.) The program that puts the email in your mail spool file or your email mail box. You will probably never even know that this program is running and will probably never interact with it. MTA - mail transport agent - the program that delivers emails between systems across a LAN and across the internet (also within a system, but thats a minor aspect) Sendmail, is an MTA (so are Qmail and Postfix, I think), Chris you should never see sendmail from your keyboard prompt unless you are trying to diagnose some problems with your mail delivery. Unless I'm mistaken I think you want to know how to use an MUA, i.e. you want to use an email program to read and write email? Right, sort of, I want to become a bit better at using the Sendmail that I have running by default on my machine. And I would like to setup Postfix later. I only added the ntfs modules a few weeks ago, so I am still scratching me head over this and would like to learn from this experience. Had you rebooted since adding the ntfs line to /etc/modules.conf? Yes, I just rebooted again and everything loaded fine. I still do not understand what happened here which caused it to screw up. - -- - -Michael = Winning an argument on the internet is like getting 1st place at the Special Olympics * GAIM ID: cmmiller1973 * __ Do you Yahoo!? Running RH 8.0 box, and I installed Fluxbox last night. That installed ok, but upon reboot, I get an error message with /etc/modules.conf. Started X and could not get my internet connection. Checked loopback and /sbin/ifconfig, all is well. Then I started to think about the error messages and did lsmod and there are only two modules listed, instead of the usual amount. Yes the computer is connected to a network, which is mine, and I do have a linksys router/firewall, but I can do tracert from my windows box ok, but not from Linux. Vice-versa - if you're accessing shares on the linux box from the Win2k machine, it wouldn't matter what the file system is - it's a network share hence accessible. Failure = 8.0 RH Upgrade/Install
insert rant here I've downloaded RH 8.0 ISOs images from Linux ISO, burned them, and then tested them. All was well. My LUG, OLUG had its installfest yesterday and after I finished helping a few folks with their systems, I decided to upgrade mine. First, I used the iso that I burned in the gui mode. It keeps timing out on the when installing the GCC libs. Ok, so I try text mode. Same story. Then I tried usign Apt-Get Dist-Install command and that seemed to work, but there were too many dependencies issues. So I wiped out what I had after backing up all of the important stuff and tried fresh. Same problem, timing out when installing the GCC libs. So, I whipped out the ISOs for Mandrake 9.0 that was the main install for our installfest and that sucker installed in less than 10 minutes. So why did Red Hat fail so bad and Mandrake win with the greatest of easy when it came to the install? If others are having as much problems as me, and I'm really not much of a newbie right now, Redhat is going to lose way more ground. Also, a guy brought in a Knoppix and that kicks ass. A great way to get more people interested in Linux without having to install. BTW, even as I write this, I am downloading the ISOs for Debian. I figured what the hell, I am ready to move on. /end rant here = People without goals get used by those who have goals - Unknown * GAIM ID: cmmiller1973 * __ Do you Yahoo!? Well, you want the alias to go in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and the script /etc/rc.d/init.d. Life would have been simpler had you installed the RPM. Which RH are you running? Most since 6.2 (I think, maybe earlier) install this by default. JAV When I ran 7.1 the rpm for openssh ran fine, when I upgraded to 7.3 it got completely hosed, and made my life a living hell, so I gave up and installed the tar package. -Chris = People without goals get used by those who have goals - Unknown * GAIM ID: cmmiller1973 * __ Do you Yahoo!? If you deploy 7.3 or 8.0, you will need to upgrade before the end of the year because Red Hat has announced the end-of-life of both 7.3 and 8.0 for Dec 31. That means no more security or any other RHN upgrades after that date. Really, is this true? Re: Cannot Mount Thumbdrive and Zip250 at the sametime
mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip This should work. Check that the partition on the zip drive is really sda4 by running the command fdisk -l /dev/sda . The zip250 drive mounts aok, it is the thumbdrive that doesn't. For the thumdrive, I use the following: mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/thumbdrive This won't work. For one thing, the sd?? devices indicates scsi drives. For another /dev/sda is not a partition but a disk. You will not be able to mount it. Thanks for the help, it worked. I'm not sure what is the proper way to set a domain name for the computers on my network. I have two machines, named phoenix and thurston. Still Cannot Get SSH To Work
I've search ipchains -L and I do get someout put, is there anyway I can pipe that, or cut and paste the output into this e-mail so someone can troubleshoot it for me. ipchains -L filename Should direct the output to a file for you. Right, I understand how to redirect the output into a file, but I could I copy/paste that output into an e-mail espeically for the ipchains -L outupt? I still can't get ssh to work. Cannot Get SSH to work
I did ipchains -L and iptables -L and got command not found. Still not sure what is causing SSH connection to fail from two machines on my network? -Chris Miller On Monday 11 February 2002 09:06, you said something about: I don't believe that I have ipchains or iptables running on both of my machines. Could I use ps -ef | grep ipchains to find it? I tried that I couldn't get any output, plus I did dmesg | more and went thru the startup script looking for something. Well, it isn't at the process level so you can't see it that way. Ipchains/iptables are kernel modules. Do ipchains -L to list the rules currently in place. (or iptables -L) Now I do have a Linksys Firewall/Router that I use to connect my machine to a cable modem, do you think that is preventing me from getting ssh to work? Unlikely. It should not block traffic on your LAN. Only block connections from the outside. __ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! Did you configure a firewall at install time? The default blocks just about everything. If the machine is reletively safe (not connected to the net or already behind a firewall) try doing... ipchains -F (sans quotes) and see if the connection problems go away. If so, it is your firewall blocking your access. You can run lokkit to open port 22 up. To reactivate the firewall, do service ipchains start. -- Brian Ashe CTO Dee-Web Software Services, LLC. I tried what you advised and even copied your source code word for word for hello.cpp and got this error output: g++ hello.cpp -o hello hello.cpp:11: parse erroe before ';' -Chris CM, On Sunday 10 February 2002 11:09, you said something about: Running RH 7.1 w/2.4.2 kernel and installed G++ from the CDROM and installed ok and can get the MAN pages but when I go to compile a simple Hello World program and a simple Celsius Program, I always get this output error, parse error before ';' This is telling you that the code has an error. Likely just before a ; ;) I consulted some of the G++ webpages and the MAN pages but I have no idea how to troubleshoot this, can anyone offer any advice? To troubleshoot, you need to check your source code. The gcc supplied by RH requires ANSI C++ compliance (at least more so then some other versions of gcc), so you may find source that doesn't compile out-of-the-box if it was not written to comply with the ANSI standard. Also, if you are cut-and-pasting from tutorials on web pages, be aware that there can sometimes be characters that will cause all kinds of problems when doing so. It is not a guaruntee, but it can happen. This compiles fine on my system using a simple g++ hello.cpp -o hello (sans quotes). #include iostream.h int main () { cout Hello World; return 0; } -- Brian Ashe CTO Dee-Web Software Services, LLC. Upgrading Mozilla RPM from 0.7 to 0.9.5
On Fri, 23 Nov 2001 13:37:53 -0800 (PST) CM Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED] implied: Whooppsss...my mistake...so sorry Now when I use rpm -Uvh mozilla* I get... error: failed dependencies libmsgbaseutil.so is needed by Mozilla-mail-0.7-0-15 I'm sure this is a dependency issue, correct? Is there any websites that I can read up on this on how to troubleshoot this? I've tried to install Gabber chat client and I get the same types of errors. thanks OK. That means you currently have mozilla-mail-0.7-whatever installed. Do you have an RPM for 0.9.5 in the directory of what you wish to upgrade? If not, you need to download it also and try again, or 'rpm -e mozilla-mail' and then try again. Which you choose will depend on whether you want to keep mozilla-mail installed. That's what the error is saying. It means you have an older mozilla-mail installed, you don't have a new one in the updates, the old one won't be uninstalled without a new one to install, and the old one needs a lib that no longer exists in the new package. Now, all of that presumes things work right. Mostly they do. Sometimes they don't. If you have everything and it's giving you the error, you can still issue 'rpm -e mozilla-mail' and then rpm -Uvh everything and make it all work. I never used the older mozilla stuff so I can't be sure. But sometimes things change around enough to confuse the RPM system. This could be one of those. Another one you'll probably see eventually is when you try to upgrade from an RPM with a version number to one with a higher number, and get told that the lower-numbered version is newer. I always just uninstall the old one (with --nodeps if needed) and then install the new one when this happens. So do I have the rpm in the wrong directory? I currently have it in my home directory where I created a directory for it, or does it need to go under var, bin or usr? So if I can't get this to install, how do I uninstall the current rpm for Mozilla 0.7 and install 0.9.5? thanks, -Chris __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Basic Network Questions for Linux
I am very familiar with networking with Windows, but now I have somewhat a network setup under linux, and want to make sure I am doing things right. Here is the description: Cable modum connected to Linksys Router that has a Class C ip address that has my cable modum DNS and IP configured. Then I connect to two machines one dual boot running Windows 2000/RH 7.1 and the other one just running 7.1. I know about netcfg command, but was wondering what machine I assign an ip address to? @home assigned 192.168.X.XX to me but do I take that and assign it to each machine, for example: one machine gets 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2? The funny thing is that for my dual boot machine, I had to go and modify etc/syscconfig/network-scrips/ifcfg-eth0 and put in the machines' name, but for my second machine I didn't do anything and it is able to use the web? Can anyone explain this? thanks again, -Chris __ Do You Yahoo!? Find the one for you at Yahoo! @home assigned 192.168.X.XX to me Oh, really? Is ATT using NAT now? That's not a routable address, so if that's really your external IP address, they've changed the way they do things since I last dealt with them. - -d That IP address is assigned by Linksys, not @home or Cox.
