Interesting that most of the Most Fun Planes have flown on the slope.
You have to have been around for awhile and live in SoCal to remember
the Rubber Ducky. It was a 60 span sloper, rudder elevator, that
thermaled like a champ and was just made for fun. It used the 2r112
profile and became the basis for my second WR X/C airplane. It would
fly in popcorn farts, do all of the R/E pattern maneuvers, perform great
increasing amplitude hammerheads, ah ya hadda be there. How
could it have been so long ago.

Enjoyed reading everyone's choice of the Most Fun plane.
My list of fun planes includes several but it has to be topped by the
56 Bluto, closely followed by the Filip Slope, Zagi 3C, and Airtronics
Aquila. Of course these are the planes I have lots of hours on, so I
guess the choice is natural. New favorites are gaining ground.

Re: [RCSE] Most fun plane

2004-11-26 Thread Richard Loud
I can't believe nobody has brought up the DAW EPP 2M 1-26 yet. By far the
most versatile slope plane I've had. Although not the original plane used
for Pine Tree Pylon Racing at Lake Wilson, it has certainly become the
favorite. It's not uncommon for six or more 1-26s to be tightly packed
vying for the turns below the tree tops.

Lose sight of yours on the far turn? Fly with your imagination... It'll
probably show up on the other side of the tree.

Midairs? Hah! They live for midairs... so do the pilots cuz flying doesn't
stop when a plane goes down, the retriever/pilot just represents another
challenge on the course.

Almost no wind? This is why they are so versatile. The 1-26 loves to fly
in that magic lift when you can't feel the breeze and you'd swear nothing
will stay up... but the 1-26 does. You may have to fly inches off the
ground, but you can do it for hours. Get a handful of planes in the air for
that and you have the recipe for forced formation flying where you hear
nothing but servos, airflow over the plane and the taps of one plane on
another. Oh... and laughter, lots and lots of laughter.

Last but not least, I've gotta say that the 1-26 is THE plane to take on a
twilight run out to catch the wind behind a tornadic storm system?

Hey, now that I think of it, I think I've just summarized both my Most Fun
Plane AND some of my Most Fun Experiences. And to think we did all of these
during and after the Midwest Slope Challenge in 2004. A summary and lots of
pictures are posted on Slopeflyer.com.
http://www.slopeflyer.com/artman/publish/mwsc_2004.shtml

I gotta say, I'm glad Skyking RC Products is keeping the 2M 1-26 alive. I'd
be lost without mine.

Louis, that's an easy question for me to answer. I'd have to say I've had
the most fun with my Weasel Pro. It was a very well designed kit with
very
complete and well written directions so that anyone can build this bird
and
have it flying in short order.

I've flown mine is very low wind conditions and also 30mph winds with no
ballast. I've had it specked out in thermals while on the slope. It
packs
small and can be in your back seat or trunk ready to fly or you can travel
with it by removing the tail. It's rugged and can tank the punishment
that
a no pilot will give it.

I don't know of a better kit for the money and I'm in the kit business
myself. My only criticism is that it's not one of my products. I like
this
kit so much that I built three of them. Two for me and one for my son.

I'd say it's a tossup between my Zagi THL (after the last retaping it
tipped the scales at just a hair over 8 oz) and my Mini Ellipse.

The Zagi flies in just about any lift and is slow enough to hand the TX to
a non-pilot to try.

The Mini Ellipse...well, it's a little plane that does everything well:
slope, thermal, aerobatics. The only problem is, with its small size, it's
too easy to lose sight of in a good thermal!

Oh, yeah...and I should add the Omega HLG to the mix: it's too heavy to be
a real HLG, but it is a very nice sloper for those days when everything
else is falling out of the sky. Plus, the open framework is very pretty
against the sky.

This has been a most interesting thread.
I've seen no mention of Pike Superiors or Icons or planes of that ilk.
People fly or flew some planes because they are fun, they fly others
because of the need to win or fly planes that winners fly. Can one presume
that it's not the flying of the plane that is fun, but the winning or
competing? I guess planes that are fun to fly aren't really all that
competitive.

I haven't offered a most fun plane because it's not the plane. Yeah,
some planes are more suited to my style or are easier to fly but that's not
the point. It's the flying that's fun for me, not necessarily flying a
particular plane, or even competing, just the flying. Often alone or with

must say we're even more enthusiastic about the Alula now.

We've flown our Alula at 60 Acres and shared the transmitter with a
bunch of SASS members, and all were impressed. It's routinely flown
within the confines of the forest which surrounds our home, and in
our granddaughter Alyssa's back yard. It's maneuverable enough to
attempt slope flying off house roofs, and turns tight enough to
mingle with bug-catching swallows in small low thermals. It's the
perfect park flyer.

We have several hundred flights on our single model at this point,
and it still looks and flies great. The more we fly it the more we
like it! And it $45, it's less expensive than the Weasel-pro.

[RCSE] Most fun plane.

2004-11-26 Thread d o darnell
Happy Holidays to RCSE patrons! Last season was a blast for me and Here's
hoping that next year is as good as this last one has been.

My most fun plane this season was my AVA. I'ts been more fun flying this
ship than it has been since I and a couple of other guys had NEW (one of
the 6 prototypes) Grand Esprits (1973?) and no one else did!

And, it was about time, too. Seems like soaring was getting less fun until
this model came along.
It would seem that some of the newer, less complicated machines are
bringing back some of the enjoyment I used to feel when things were less
complicated.

Anyway Happy Holidays to RCSE patrons and our sponsor Air Age!
Last season was a blast for me and Here's hoping that next year is as good
as this last one has been.

I would disagree with the last sentence. I didn't mention my ICON because
that would be what people would expect me to say.

By far, it is the most fun model to fly for me, and it's the one I fly the
most. An analogy comes to mind is that I can compare it to several cars I
drive, my SUV is nice and comfortable, 4x4, gets me through the snow and
crappy weather or wherever I want to go, carries all my models, I have had
many good times with it. But when I get the opportunity to drive my Z06, I
am rapidly reminded of its Dr. Jekyl / Mr. Hyde personality, it's wildly
great performance, and what dogs performance wise most people drive day to

does not mean that I can't have fun with both vehicles.

I haven't offered a most fun plane because it's not the plane. Yeah,

I didn't mention the model I was being towed by Johnny's PEGASUS
either... (it was a scale DG-800) I agree with you, when I think of most
fun plane I think of the place and time and people, it's typically an
event and the fun comes from what is happening at the time.

To me, most gliders are fun, but one stands out above the rest. Does
anyone remember the 2m Beater from Trick R/C? It was a full 2m EPP foamy
with an HQ airfoil, rugged as you would expect, but flew far better than
any EPP glider that I have ever flown. I have owned two of them built
with polly dihedral for thermal soaring. They will launch like a 2m
SuperV or a 2m Duck - jaw dropping spectacle to watch - and to add to the
surprise, they thermal very well also. I didn't have spoilers in them,
but no big deal. They taught you how to make an approach and could
bounce off an aggressive dork landing. Needless to say, they were great
as a trainer, but really fun for the experienced flyer as well. I loaned
mine out all the time for visitors to enjoy. A couple of winters ago,
some of my buddies joined me in scratch building some 100 inch versions

of the Beater. Other than the addition of spoilers we pretty much copied
the 2m version. They fly great, and because of the larger size, are
easier to see at a distance. They have a good speed range, with proper
adjustment of elevator trim. My 100 inch version flew away from me in
Lexington, KY, when I launched it with the switch off .:~( My wife timed
it on the clock for 7 and a half minutes while we all watched it flying
around over the tobacco fields and horse pastures of Kentucky. It
finally specked out, drifting eastbound, and far as I know, it could be
in the Smoky Mountains, or maybe still flying? That's my story and I'm
sticking to it. A really fun glider!

I would have to say my Zagi 400 is my favorite simply because its resilience
allows me to try things I would not try with a crunchie.

A close second would be my Mini-Challenger. Very stable and very good at
coring thermals - at least it was until some boob flew his AstroHog through
my left wing panel and then didn't even have the decency to offer to replace
the kit.

not just cause it's capable of winning contests, but mostly because it

[RCSE] Most fun plane. . . big Genie

2004-11-26 Thread Harley Michaelis
After 12 years and my 27th Genie, and thinking about nearly 40 years of
flying with at least 100 different airframes, nothing surpasses the various
kinds of exhilaration experienced flying this 145 span, scratch-built,
vacuum-bagged original design sailplane.

My first eye opener, of flying this larger than typical thermal competition
ship occurred at a NWSS Tournament in 1993. I flew my 2nd one at that event
and had the experience of releasing under a gaggle of other state of the art
ships. . .then mostly Dodgson Designs. . .and working up through and above
all of them to be the highest of the bunch. I'd never seen that before.

Along the way, over the years, there have been countless occasions of going
up when others were sinking in the same air and several occasions of working
from 35-50 feet to sky out for a max, confirming that a larger, heavier, but
clean and efficient ship can do very well in lift that might be considered
more suited to hand launch machines.

Another fun maneuver I don't see others doing is to push the nose over to
tuck inverted and fly around inverted at high speed.

What generates the real adrenalin rush, though, comes from being in great
lift and trimming to stop gaining altitude and build speed. I remember an
occasion last year where lift was everywhere. I faced a panorama of big,
well-defined, busy, white cumulus from horizon to horizon and could rip a
half mile right or left at speeds that got so high, I expected a big
explosion at any moment. I expected to see a shower of hundreds of little
pieces heading earthward for my reckless defiance of nature and the limits
of the airframe. I just scared myself, but it stayed in one piece. My knees
were knocking and hands trembling at the excitement of it all.

Another great satisfaction is the safe, controlled, true vertical descent
possible from a couple of thousand of altitude, with properly compensated
flaps, to come in for a soft landing by the feet.

Whew!. ..what a rush out of a $300 cost for such an amazing airframe. It's
made even more fun knowing you did it yourself!

What? You don't know about the GENIE or the LT/S? You're expecting to have
to drop $1,200-$1,500 on another euro-moldie? Really? See
http://genie.rchomepage.com/.

I admit my Boomerang was the plane I had most fun with. I can throw it in

Sometimes I ballast it when the wind is really blowing. My Boomerang lost

Plane is a rather broad term. Depends on what you want to do with it. I'd
say my FVK Aquila's are most fun, I have FIVE of them! But it's a powered
plane and I've also had a heck of a lot of fun with my Artemus sailplane
because upon going for my level1 LSF goal, I had a 35+ minute flight and
ended up forcing the plane down. Something really fun about flying that long
for the firs time with no power.

I've yet to try slope - but that is another thing all together. So it's
really going to depend on the application desired for the plane.

2004-11-25 Thread Ed Berris
Louis, that's an easy question for me to answer. I'd have to say I've had
the most fun with my Weasel Pro. It was a very well designed kit with very
complete and well written directions so that anyone can build this bird and
have it flying in short order.

I've flown mine is very low wind conditions and also 30mph winds with no
ballast. I've had it specked out in thermals while on the slope. It packs
small and can be in your back seat or trunk ready to fly or you can travel
with it by removing the tail. It's rugged and can tank the punishment that
a no pilot will give it.

I don't know of a better kit for the money and I'm in the kit business
myself. My only criticism is that it's not one of my products. I like this
kit so much that I built three of them. Two for me and one for my son.

My most fun plane, you're going to gasp, was a Zagi 400X. Speed 400 powered
and unafraid of circuits with the wing tips less than a foot off the grass.
That stupid foam plane developed me as a pilot and prepared me for the pylon
racers that I have grown to love.

My favourite plane to date, however, was my Mini-Nyx E. I miss that plane
more than any other, and have resolved to get another one before spring.
Well, that or a fully flown F5F (10 cell F5B) ship. I killed my Mini-Nyx by
forgetting to charge the rx battery after a couple of 25min+ flights. It's a
terrible way to be reminded that not all of my electric powered planes are
BEC equipped!!!

I don't think I'll ever let go of my powered planes, but I can assure
everyone that my glow power days are far behind me. If I ever get IC again,
it'll be a gasoline burning Wilga, and that folks, is the soaring content
for this post :)

That's easy. It is my Winglet Spica. I designed the Spica in the fall of
1978 and it first flew in January, 1979. It's first contest was the LSF
Tournament in Lockport, IL in 1979 and it's last contest was in 2-meter at
the 1998 Nats. In the early 80s, it had no competition in two-meter while
in the late 90s, it was no competition. Even so, my last win with the
Winglet Spica was in Unlimited at the 1996 Airfoilers Spring contest to
complete my contest win requirements for LSF Level V. After the 1998 Nats,
I retired it after 20 years of contest flying and it now hangs from my shop
ceiling. All it would need to fly again is a receiver and battery pack.

For me it has to be the Houston Hawk. I designed it to
teach building/covering techniques, and to be rugged
for teaching some of the finer points of
flying/landing. I guess the teaching part was the most
fun, even though the model turned out to be rather
competitive. I was so happy when I saw some guys that
said they couldn't build or hadn't built ever coing to
the field with completed models. I was able to pass on
a gift the Fort Worth Planesmen passed on to me, when
a couple of their members took me to contests and gave
me building advise. I didn't have a father, and no way
to get to a field or club meetings. Seeing other Hawks
on the web and at the field is really special. That's
something to really be thankful for

Enjoy

2004-11-25 Thread Winch

Have to agree with Pat on this one. My Fun One gets almost as much air time
as all my other planes combined. Light wind, heavy wind even thermals
drifting through on calm days.

Easy to answer this one, PEGASUS tow plane. Vertical tow to 1000 ft. in 27
sec. Rolls opposite with the Sailplane while going vertical. Tows to 4000
ft. Towing inverted.

Does not get any better than that

I would like to know what plane you had the most fun with.

I admit my Boomerang was the plane I had most fun with. I can throw it
in any slope condition I meet without worrying.
Sometimes I ballast it when the wind is really blowing. My Boomerang
lost its rigidity long time ago because it met earth, trees, etc. so
 many times...

 But it still flies fine.

I will rebuild it or build a new one for next summer. I cannot consider
 living without one.

RE: [RCSE] Most fun plane

2004-11-25 Thread targetdrone
I had the most fun with a Silent Squadron Komet. It was won by a club
member in the Phoenix raffle the last year they had it at Rodeo Park.
The guy who won it didn't fly foam (his loss) and gave it to me since he
had borrowed my ship for the contest and dinged it up a bit (and then
fixed it stronger than it was -Genesis wing pylon-).

I flew it in combat at the slope, bungeed it at the thermal field or
anywhere else. I even taped a bunch of weight on it and flew it at Pt.
Fermin. My brother just about took my head off with it the only time he
tried to fly in the last 23 years or so. It met its fate on a bungee
launch at the slope. When it hit the wind at the edge of the slope
right after launch, it went flutter, flutter, BOOM! The wings folded
and the fuse tore. I pulled the gear out and tossed it away after that.

I knew he was going to say that!
And I have to say, being on the other end of that PEGASUS being towed up is
one of my most fun experiences!

So, now that the discussion is ebbing let's have some stories of your most

There are *many* planes in our backgrounds. Many of us can't even remember
all we've had! But in my experience, only a few get into your heart. Let's

Although not finished yet, the Allegro Lite I am building has been the most
fun project. At first I was bewildered at how everything went together, but
I kept studying all the material and James Osborns web site and it all made
sense. Have the wingtips attached to the midpanels now, so it looks like the
rest should not be a problem.

Re: [RCSE] Most fun plane?

2002-06-07 Thread Joe G

DAW 1-26 HLG - My first aileron ship and my first foamie. The plane that
taught me more than all the others before or since. This was the first ship
that I would try almost anything with, you know the loops, inverted, rolls,
etc. cause it just kept on flying where as the previous ones were skeeters
and goldberg's and they just didn't appreciate my landing technique all the
time. It was nice to be able to fly the plane a whole lot more than the
time it took to build it, which was not the case with the crunchies. I
gotta thank Mr. Russ Young for introducing me to the 1-26, if he hadn't
shown up at the dam that day, three years ago now, I probably wouldn't be
flying anything these days.

Good topic, look forward to hearing others...
