My experience says that an institution like the foundation should not get involved in trying to give advice or otherwise comment on the product of a competitor. The reader will either know who we are and does not need to be informed about GMM, or the reader will think that the press release does not tell the whole story and give GMM a chance. On Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 2:35 AM, Lauri Hahne [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: First, I must admit that the subject of this message is a little bit outre but don't let that bother. * I'm trying to summarise a few things I've been thinking lately. I think none of these issues is major or something that should actually be worked on. I have no suggestions what-so-ever what could fix the issues but don't let that bother. I just want some feedback and to know whether anybody agrees with me. 1. Ways - There are one kind of ways in the database. Ways can have attributes (tags) but aren't required. - The tagging scheme suggest there are many kinds of ways (highway, cycleway, aeroway...) - Potlatch and JOSM's preset (and mappaint?) system allow you to pick a type for way. - We have questions such as how can I turn this way into a bridge or how can I create a bridge-way at #osm once in a while. This leads me to think that do Tagging Scheme, Wiki, Potlatch, and JOSM (in that order - ordered by severity) give wring kind of hints what's actually in the database. This is because it has become pretty obvious to me that there are people (likely not much?) who think the that we have different kind of ways. These people need to be told that we don't have different kind of ways but way which have attributes. I can see why these people think like this because especially wiki does list different kind of ways in the Map Features page. But we do have different kinds of ways. If users are asking how you change the type of the way, then that suggests to me a fairly useful abstraction from the data model that we should be taking advantage of. Roughly speaking our extended data model, the bit that actually starts to define what all the ways and nodes actually mean (ie: map features), does to a large extent imply that each way has a type. Our data model is much more than just the raw stuff we put in the db. 2. Nodes Apparently Potlatch tris to keep nodes and POIs separate even though these are the same thing again. This works really well in Potlatch but yet again it's against our data model and might lead to some confusion. I haven't seen any examples of this so this is very theoretical for now. I don't think this is against the data model at all. Obviously we both know that there's no difference in representation in the OSM database, except that one is a member of at least one way, and the other isn't, and we also know that large numbers of tools will ignore that one difference when processing them. But logically it makes perfect sense, and again our extended map features data model kind of largely implies that this is true. ie: this is another useful abstraction that will help out users if put to proper use (like in Potlatch). As I wrote earlier, I have no suggestions about fixing these issues. IMHO the current data model is great but I think it should be made obvious to newbies. One way to do this would be to introduce OSM as trace-nodes-way-tags instead of the traditional trace-nodes-way which is quite prevalent in slides etc. It would also be a nice idea to write an introduction to our data model and put it in the beginning of the Beginner's Guide in Wiki. I'm volunteering to write this if somebody promises to proof-read it. So I think the fix for this is to have the editors better represent what's actually going on, rather than to have the users trained in the nitty gritty underlying data model. Abstractions are good, and for the vast majority of our 40,000+ users more than enough. I'm guessing just about everybody subscribed to this mailing list wants more though (me included). I want to be able to play around with the raw tags/nodes/ways/relations etc to come up with new things, new ways of doing things. I'm guessing most people just want to make a map though. Ideally the editors will cater for both. One of these days I might actually get round to doing something about it. These stages may or may not occur in sequential order and each stage can be quoted complete in terms of percentages. For example we might say that London is 100% complete for Preliminary and stages 1 and 2, but only 60% stage 3 complete and 20% stage 4 complete. [OSM-talk] How can we measure the completeness of the map statistically
I would like a way that we can say accurately how complete any area is, without relying on other users to have said its complete. Ive come up with a few hypotheses and posted them on my blog (http://edwardmjohnson.wordpress.com) of ways which we can start to do this. * A complete map will have all of the roads in an area, but we cannot obtain stats on the amount of road in every area we may wish to test in OpenStreetMap. So an accurate way to predict the length of road in any area would be useful. My hypothesis is that the length of road in a given area is dependent upon population density. That is to say I expect that urban areas will have less road per person than rural areas. * For areas where OSM has aerial imagery I would like to compare the complexity (ie file size) of the Yahoo! jpeg and the corresponding OSM tiles. The hypothesis is that areas with very small aerial jpeg files (because they are simply one colour like the sea or vast expanses of desert) will have few if any entries on OSM, whereas areas with large file sizes (cities) will have a large density of nodes and ways in OSM and therefore large tile size. I do not have the technical knowledge to test this so any help would be great. * Another hypothesis is that more complete areas of OSM will have a higher level of edit activity. If no-one has ever edited an area then it may be unlikely that the map is complete there, obviously however there may just be nothing there, so this test could be used in conjunction with the Yahoo! Imagery test stated before. If we could produce some sort of heat map showing which areas are edited most frequently and monitor it over time this could certainly show us some interesting trends. * This is an attempt to solve the problem of missing roads. I would think it unlikely that there would a road which is completely cut off from others, or that there would be an entire settlement of roads not connected to rest of the country’s road network (as in the Madiera example shown below again). The hypothesis is that every road is connected to at least one other road of equal or higher classification. So if in OSM there are roads that are not, then maybe there are missing roads. This testing may require a lot of calculations and may not return that many missing roads. If some one can think of a way to do it simpy then I would very much like that input. Any other ideas of how we can measure completeness statistically? On Thursday 26 June 2008, Charlie Echo wrote: The proposal you mention is a radical change in the way we would tag. We would move from tag=value to tag:subtag:subtag=value. Sure, it's very different to current tagging, but we need to think about more complex access restrictions. The proposal isn't perfect either, one can't for example say that goods vehicles over 3.5 tons are not allowed except for loading and unloading (a restriction that appears a lot over here). The problem in that restriction being that it depends on more than one property: goods vehicles (buses are always allowed for example), maximum weight 3.5 tons, and an exception for loading and unloading its goods in the area where the restriction applies. Or what about restrictions applying one direction only, or restrictions applying to only one lane in a three lane road? The ordering problems you mention is another thing. I also can see lots of ambiguity issues coming up. I have done approximately this some time ago. See my post in an earlier thread on completeness measures: http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2008-May/026284.html In the meantime I created the images for the Netherlands weekly and put them in an animated GIF file: http://www.vanwal.nl/osm/density/nl_500_080425-080619.gif On the Dutch tile server we also added a layer showing recent changes, overlayed over aerial imagery, see http://tile.openstreetmap.nl/~rubke/fietskaart/?zoom=9lat=52.00lon=5.07layers=0B000FFTT (Only zoom level 7-10; the placenames can be turned off in the layer menu.) Re: [OSM-talk] [tagging] Feature Proposal - RFC - (PSV_directions)
On the one side, I agree that tagging should be more ellaborate. On the other side, I just imagine few exceptions, and few categories of vehicles. For instance, in France, when I write psv, I mean buses, cabs, bicycles, because they are all allowed on the same way, and everyone knows it. In fact, for the vast majority of ways, everyone is allowed. So we may tolerate tricky tagging for tricky events. So we might start thinking about this once before quickly patching current problems with tags like psv_directions :-) I suppose when we have defined a new tagging reference, a small script will be run on the database to modify automatically all ways, and to raise flags if there is a need of manual intervention, which should be rare. (such a script should be run to replace the value 1 or true by yes when relevant, and so on...) My point is to add information in the system in a structured way, even if too complex. As the need of taging this opposite bus lane is quite frequent where I live (Paris, France), I MUST find a solution quickly. My current best approach is to create two ways, one for cars one-way, and the other two-way for buses. It's stupid, and splitting one way in two is a nonsense that will be hard to modify back, so I really want to have it fixed! [OSM-talk] Access restrictions (was: Feature Proposal - RFC - (PSV_directions))
Hi all, With the psv_directions discussion, I've started http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Proposed_features/Access_restrictions to completely rethink the idea of access restrictions once. There's no proposed tagging scheme yet (so technically this is not a RFC yet). For now I want to see a page filled with ideas, suggestions, current problems, issues to keep in mind and more I may forget about. So, I'd like to see the page grow a bit with your contributions. Ever ran into a problem you weren't able to tag? Then list it on the page. The access restrictions are very important tags so I want to see a lot of input to finally get a tagging scheme that's good for all :-) Greetings Ben On Thursday 26 June 2008, Charlie Echo wrote: On the one side, I agree that tagging should be more ellaborate. He said that a JSON message would be valid JavaScript and thus it could be loaded script-like into a JavaScript app, circumventing the same-origin policy that applies to XmlHttpRequest. That's sort of true. (Specifically, your API has to support an arbitrary 'callback' parameter, to wrap the Javascript *object* in a function. At least, that's how every service and all code I've used have done it.) Note that this doesn't actually require that we stop returning XML: we could return XML wrapped in a JSON response, and then just parse the xML as a string (which OpenLayers has the ability to do); this would eliminate the need for much code, just meaning you'd add a rails bit to take ?callback= to mean 'wrap the XML in a string and a function_call()'. I said why bother, people can easily proxy requests if they want, but he said that there's a large group of possible users that wouldn't be able to set up a proxy and for whom a JSON interface would be an absolute requirement. I agree that this is true. I don't even know if there was any merit to his ramblings, technically - can you really dynamically load JOSN data from other hosts? You can dynamically load Javascript from other hosts, and in that, you can wrap up JSON. It is a commonly used technique, and since the mechanism is the same as the mechanism by which Javascript *code* is loaded, there's no differentiating between it and something like the Google Maps API, or OpenLayers. There are some security risks associated with this if you have private data, but that doesn't apply to OSM -- there is no GET request that requires authentication and provides non-public information, afaik. Proxying isn't that hard. However, if you really don't have *any* server side to work with -- think googlepages, other FTP-only hosting mechanisms, etc. -- then it is true that data embedded in a Javascript function call is a way to avoid cross-site restrictions. Of course, you can just grab the relation file into the same dir as the html and request it from the current directory. [Talk-de] Häßliche Route Relationen in [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Ganz anders auf See.
3 errors prohibited this trace from being saved There were problems with the following fields: Tags is invalid Tags is invalid Tags is invalid - habs soeben (zwei Klicks weiter) herausbekommen: Kommata sind unerwünscht, Tiefstriche ebenso.
