Can anyone help with MSN

2009-07-29 Thread MikeD
Hello Guys,

Has anyone gotten TB to work with msn.com? I can get it to read,
but I have not been able to figure out a config that works to get
it to send messages. Any help or suggestions would be
appreciated.

Trouble with SHortcuts

2007-02-07 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello TBUDL,

I was looking to assign a shortcut for 'Options', 'Message Format',
'Plain Text' (something like Ctrl-shft-T, for example). But when I
go into 'View', 'Toolbar', 'Customize' on a message window, I can
only go as far is Message Format. The selections that appear in the
Message Format menu are not present in the shortcut display.

Does anyone know if there is there a way to get to that option and
assign a quick key or am I just OOL?

I have not used Regula, but ...

'rar' is an 'archive' format much like 'zip' files. You have to
'unarchive' them as you would with a zip tile. That will give you the
plugin as well as the other 'support' files that Regula needs. There
will likely be a 'readme' or similar file that explains where those
files need to do.

No argument from me there. I agree. My example was in response to the

Click on 'Accounts' and select 'Filters' and click 'File' then 'New
Filter.

On the General tab give it a name, in the 'condition' box, select
'Subject Contains' and then add 'wrote:'. In the "action" section,
select what you want to do ... "move to folder \\JUNK" for example.

That should do it ... but only until they change the message content
which will happen pretty soon. That is a very inefficient way to try
and keep up with spammers. The other suggestions are helpful and more
useful in the long term. I use Agava FWIW and like it. But BayesIt
worked OK for me for a number of years too ... after I trained it with
a **LOT** of email and I needed to 're-train' it once or twice a year

When you miss that important email because it was sent from someone
that was blacklisted incorrectly, I will remind you of those 600 other
messages and ask you which was more important, the one or the 600

I really hate it when my ISP decides to reject some email that *they*
think is spam but is actually real and sometimes important. I currently
have everything they offer disabled and rely on the plugin. That way
I get all the messages.

As a side note, those same blacklists cause me no end of headache when
I get one of the dozen or so weekly support requests from folks whose
newsletters have stopped because some site has blacklisted everything
that is sent using Lyris ... or some fool forgot that they signed up
for the newsletter (they have to submit an email to us that is
reviewed and then approved, no auto-registration) and reports us and
some portion of the other 999 readers are inconvenienced

Can you tell I don't like the black list model?

Normally 'Private Message' or 'Private Mail' depending on who you ask.
In the context here, it means that the message was answered "off

probably would not be of interest to anyone else in the list.

I have used BayesIt in the past. It worked (mostly) OK. I had no
problems with it, but it was not the most effective filter around (at
least the last time I used it ). On the plus side, I =never= had a
false positive with it, but it only caught about 75 to 80% of the
spam.

I am using Agava now and it is much easier to get it to the point
where it was filtering relatively well. It does a better overall job
of catching spam, about 90+%, but I =do= get the occasional false
positive. That is 'worrisome' since it makes it more likely that I
will miss something ... nor can I just ignore the spam folder.

I have not tried Bayes Filter.

There are days I think about going back to BayesIt again to see if it
has gotten any better. But I am mostly lazy and have not gotten
around to it

I have not had that problem, but then I have not kept that many emails
around. You might try trimming down your email. I never keep more
than about 4 thousand messages in any folders. Archive some of the
old mail and see if that doesn't help.

I used to use it. I moved to Agvara ant think it (mostly) works
better.

I found that it took a **LOT** of mail to train it. I kept at least
1,000 spam and 1,000 ham messages around just to train it. I got it
to better than 80% without using a white or black list and I *NEVER*
got a false positive with it. Agvara gets about 95% of my spam but I
do have to go through the spam because I get the occasional false
positive with it.

So the end result is that it works, but is a more 'finiky'. But it is
also free

I used BayesIt and it worked well enough considering the price I

Ahh, I get it now. My explanation of the behavior of the '~' file is,
I think, still correct. As to why you are not seeing any spam
filtering, if you your black and white lists are doing was much as you
say, I think that means that not much mail is getting to the actual
BayesIt filter to be counted. Having said that, would have expected
some info there. I can send you a copy of my stat.bin if you think
that might help. Or uninstall / reinstall the plug in might help. My
stat.bin is a binary file, so there may be a required structure for it
to be recognized as a valid stat file.

Well I have never dug into it quite that deeply, but it sounds like
those files are only used for calculating stats, not for the actual
filtering, so their not being around should not cause a filter issue.

As to the '~' file, that is a common practice for naming temp files
that are temp backups for open files. For example word does that as
well. The '~' files are deleted when they are no longer needed ...
usually

I can't look at the moment 'cuz I am currently testing out AGAVA. But
I seem to recall seeing stats when I did use it. There were 4 that I
remember looking at ... correctly filtered spam and ham, mis-filtered
for both as well. My goal was to keep ham classified as spam as close
to zero as possible. I think BayesIt was better than any of the other
filters I have tried in terms of not putting ham in the spam folder.

But I wasn't particularly 'religious' about checking the stats. I was
more interested in the results

I have not used Achim, but when I had this problem with a different
bayes filter, I uninstlled it, deleted the "word list" data,
re-installed it and then retrained it and it would be fine (until the
next time )

Once you get it working again, set a key stroke for the "Mark as Spam"
(and probably the "mark as not spam" as well). I used Ctrl-Shft-J
(for junk ). Then you just highlight the spam messages and use the
key code you set up. Other wise you can right click on the selected
messages, select specials and then click on 'mark as spam' option.
This will send the data to the bayes filter for training and move them
to the designated spam destination.

SO far I have not seen if you mentioned this. Is his email a free

For Hotmail, you are stuck with the 'web-to-pop' interface.

For an actual 'msn' account, you can use TB natively. Just follow the

That gets it installed. You still have to train it with as much spam

It wasn't a problem here for any of the versions I tried in that

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you other than to try either:

1.) running through one or more of the intervening updates and
see if there is something that needed to be 'tweeked' between

2.) try one of the later builds to see if it was just a quirk

Did you give it any "non-spam" messages when you trained it? I made
that mistake when I first tried BayesIt. If you only give it spam,
then it had no idea what a "Good" message looks like, so everything
will look like spam to it. It needs at least as much "ham" as "spam"
for training.

Beyond that, go to OPtion, Preferences, Anti-spam and select Baysit

Try adjusting the Move message "threshold" to a higher number. You
might also play with the "Avg/Max/Min" scoring, although I am not sure
exactly how that is used (I use Avg, FWIW)

Hmm ... I have nothing else to suggest at this point. But you might

Well I am not sure either It just seemed that since it seems to

I have this problem (at least it sounds like the problem I have) about
once a week or so. It is not you Anti-virus, I use eTrust ... and
have Zone Alarm Pro FWIW.

If I delete the BayesIt plug-in (from options/preferences/add-ins only
... I don't delete the files or the trained data), close TB, start TB
again, add BayesIt back in ... that usually fixes it for me, I can
then download again and things work normally.

Occasionally, that won't work and I have to do one extra step. After
I have deleted BayesIt, I have to connect and get mail once. After
that I can re-add BayesIt and it will work fine for a while again.

I am not sure if the problem is triggered by a certain email message
format or not. But my *guess* is that it has something to do with a
miss-formed message header of some sort.

Spammers have gotten "hip" to how Bayesian filtering works and have
devised ways to get around it by filling the message with random words
and the like, so that no two messages are the same ... just as they
were able to get around "name" filtering by creating fictitious
addresses that were always different.

It is a constant struggle. We find a new "tool", then "they" find a
way around it

Bayesian filtering still works, just not as effectively against the
rabbid spammer who only seems to care about getting a nonsense message
into your inbox ... as opposed to the commercial spammer who does want
you to buy something (what are they thinking? )

Hello Dave,

DT> How do you install this Bayesit filter?

First unarchive the TBP file someplace in either the TB executable
tree or the data tree. I put mine in Prg_files/TheBat/Bayesit

Go to Options / PLugins.

Click add and then point at the bayesit.tbp file, click OK and you are
basically done. It will then be set up with some defaults. You will
then need to train it before it will be any good at recognizing spam.
There are two ways to do that.

First, just continue to receive mail as you do now and for each spam
you find, use the menu Specials - Mark as Spam (I have assigned that
to Alt-J (for junk) on my system). It will have assumed everything is
"ham" (i.e. non-spam) until you mark it as such, so you don't have to
do anything about those.

Or, if you have saved some spam and some "ham" messages saved on your
system, you can save some time by training it on those messages using
the specials 'mark as junk' and 'mark as not junk' to "get a leg up"
as it were. Just be sure to get at least as much ham as spam in your
training so that it has a good idea what it good stuff or you will end
up with a lot of false positives.

Not necessarily. If the installation that "leaves a copy on the
server" (aux) is there merely to test new versions ... or is there to
check on mail during the day, but is not your "main system", it would
not be a problem to delete from the "main" system. The only problem
that I see in this case is that you lose access to your replies made
from the "aux" machine ... unless you CC or BCC yourself on all
replies made from that machine.

Perhaps, but in terms of "bugs per buck" there are programs like ...

Microsoft windows, Office, outlook express, internet explorer and
others that I had to spend **LOTS** more money to acquire that have as
many or more bugs than TB did for me.

But of course, based on the message traffic here and in the beta site,
there were people that had a lot more problems than I did. So the
number and severity of the problems that you had could certainly
affect your perception of the issue

Well FWIW, I have to say that ver 2.12 was pretty damned stable for me

problems with some of the less commonly used features (IMAP & PGP, for

In the 3 or 4 years that I have been using TB, I have never had to

You can stay on 2.12. If you don't need the things that they never got
working reliably, it works remarkably well and is stable as all get
out. I considered that, but in the end (just this week, in fact)
I decided that the cost was so minimal for the improvements that I
decided to go ahead and upgrage.

Hmmm and I should also mention that the newest version is 0.7.3 and
since you are going to have to go through all that anyway, you might

Are you doing all 10 words in one "filter string set"? Have you tried
using the "alternative" tab to create a separate "filer string set" for
each of your 10 words? I have had better luck with that method over
trying to build one comprehensive test string

GS> How do you do this?

Select all the spam messages the way you would select any messages and
once you have them all selected, click on Specials and select "Mark as
Spam" from that drop down menu. That is all there is to it.

However, a word of caution: with only spam (and no "ham") in the
training base, you are likely to get a lot of false positives because
there will be lots of "spam" indicators from the spam messages you
trained it with, but no (or almost no) offsetting "ham" indicators.
You would be better served to wait until you have processed some "ham"
mail so that the system will have some indication of what a good
message will look like.

One idea that someone else suggested was to use your "sent mail" for
"ham" training. That might work unless you are like me and get a lot
of "news letters", "news items" and the like that are nothing like
what I send out

Hope that helps.

Hello Dave,

DT> Hi there, how do I configure the filter in version 3?

You have to unarchive it and it's support files. I keep mine in a
folder called (big surprise) 'bayesit' that is in the 'TheBat' program
tree.

Next you start TB and go to Option, Prefernces and select Plugins at
the bottom of the list.

Click Add and then point it at the 'bayesit' folder and select the
'bayesit.tbp'

That will get things started. Next you have to start showing it what
is good email (i.e. 'ham') and what is spam (that is train it). You
can do that in several different ways. You can just start using TB as
before. Without anything to go on it *should* treat everything as
ham. You then tell it what is spam. Eventually it will start to
figure things out.

If you have saves a lot of spam and ham samples, you can train it on
those saved letters. That will speed up the training process.

That should get you started. Ask if you have any other questions.
Someone will chime in

That is definitely the place to go to see what it is doing in a fairly

Another thing to do is look in Bayesit's log file. There you can see
what it did with every message in the last message get. Mine is in

That has been an ongoing problem with recent versions. And while not
everyone has had problems like this, many others have. I have had
mixed results (as to the 'crashing' thing) myself and I went back to
an earlier version. If you have version 0.5.11, that one seems to be
pretty stable and works "well enough".

If you want to keep "up to date" you will want to join the beta group.

Right, I have both a ham and a spam folder with messages for training.
I empty all my junk folders into the Spam folder and all my Trash
folders go to Ham. I keep both 'trimmed' to between 1500 and 2000
messages. That ends up being about 4 to 6 weeks for me.

That means that I always have a relatively current set of messages to
train from ... as opposed to a static copus that is months out of
date. The spammers seem to come up with new ways to 'beat the system'
every week or two.

Yes it is a shame that some people have a problem. I have too at
various times. But that is something that we put up with to support
something that is *very affordable* (i.e. free) and that works on many
more systems than it doesn't ... we try it, identify errors and help
the author get them fixed. And every version does get better and bugs
that can be identified are fixed.

AJ> If anyone would care to actually investigate why it does this and fix

You do realize that the Alexi is developing this on his own just for
our benefit, right? He gets no payment for this.

But he cannot do it in a vacuum. It is not easy for an **individual**
without the resources of someone like Microsoft to be able to test on
all possible hardware-software configurations out there. He relies on
us to give him useful feedback about how things fail.

I am sure he would welcome your help identifying bugs. Have you
written to him to see if, between the two of you, you can figure out
what is not working so he can fix it? I know that, at least in the
past, he has worked with others that have had problems and took the
time to contact him about working through the problem. I was one of
them

Hmmm ... You don't seem to like the other free alternatives much

Well I don't *know* that you have to do it *every* time. But when I
first went from 0.4 something to 0.5 something, I had all sorts of
problems until I did the uninstall/wipe things. That may not be
required to go from 0.6.0 to 0.6.1, but since it only takes an extra
... maybe 5 minutes to do the cleanup, install and retrain, it seems a
small price for a good install. I loose a lot more time if I don't and

Mostly it is a YMMV sort of thing at the moment. You install it and
it works well or it does not.

I have it (BayesIt 0.6.1) working on my system. I had some early
problems because I installed it over an older version. The key there
seems to be to completely remove all traces of the old one before
installing and trying to train the new one. If you have never
installed it, you may not have any problems. But as others have said,
they did. It is it is a problem for you, it is easy enough to remove
it and wait to see if the next release helps you.

They may need execute permissions as well. If you open the directory
for the Bat and select 'properties', go the 'security' tab and select
'everyone'. Now look for 'read and execute' and check the allow box
there. Also check the allow box for 'write' as you may need that as
well.

If you still have problems, you can select 'Full Control'. If you
still have problems, then it is something else that is getting in the
way.

I suspect that most win 2k users are set up with admin privledges, so
they probably do not have that problem.

Besides "adjusting" access for the plugin, you may need to 'fiddle'
some other tb file rights as well. While I use win 2k regularly, I am

There must be a login on the system that has admin privledges. You
can't delete them all. You will need to log in with one of those
accounts and either grant your regular account permission to add the
plugin or add it from that account.

It is also possible that it is just a permissions problem on the plug
in file itself that needs to be changed.

Hope that helps.

Well first off, I don't think bayesIt can "refilter the inbox" after
the fact the way a filter can. AFAIK, it only works on incoming mail.

As to why nothing seems to be getting filtered on the new mail DL, now
you need to look at the settings on the Options/Preferences/Anti-Spam
page. I have my "move message if score is greater than" set in the
single digits. But that depends to some extent on the actual message
base that you have ... how different your Ham is from Spam. There are
a couple of other 'flags' you can play with, but I am less clear on
how they affect things.

Can you fire up a version of windows long enough to get the install to
work? Then you can just 'migrate' the results to your linux box.

I keep a small Windows partition on most of my linux boxes for just
that purpose. It is still possible to do that via a second box, but
not as easy.

The announcement I received said the discount was good until Dec 1st.
That should be plenty of time to see if they get enough of the bugs
out and features in to justify the cost.

At the moment, 2.12 works well enough that I can wait without problem

I don't know if old versions are kept 'live', but if they are ... the
name *should* be http://www.ritlabs.com/download/bayesit/bayesit059.rar

I just got 0.5.11 a couple of weeks ago and it was bayesit0511.rar.
See the pattern there?

SS> Is there any clues"?

A couple of things ...

1.) did you train it with lots of *not* spam? It is at least as
important to show it what is not spam as it is to show it spam.

2.) You mentioned restoring TB from a back up and later that you are
using ver 3. Did you have an anti spam that you were using in that old
"back up" version? You need to be meticulous in removing all traces of
the old plug-in. Un-install it, clear out all the data files and
directories that it created (there was data in the program tree as
well as in the data tree on my 'Bayesit' anti-spam plug-in), re-add in
the plug-in and now go retrain it.

Not sure what problem you are having with filters ... are you sure
that they are set correctly? I have ... at various times ... made
mistakes on what I was filtering, where I was filtering, what action I
was taking, etc.

If they are 'hold overs' from the earlier version, you might try
deleting all the filters and then putting them back in one at a time
to see if maybe something was corrupted in the conversion/upgrade.

Well considering what has happened ... a single beta release of 3 just

are going to see any "glowing reports" from any reviewers. :-/

If they were a *savvy* business they would have done something
different. Up until this point they had a seriously devoted group of
users. They would have been better off on so many different levels if
they had done something along the lines of what Mandrake did when it
was having cash flow problems. they harnessed their loyal user base
by offering them special things ... mandrake club being the most
successful of those. The users were willing to pay varying amounts of
money annually to belong and get varying access to the perks that it
offered. Something like that would have worked here, I think.

Instead they disrespected the beta testers (they got now more advance
warning than any one else), went back on promises to implement
features, continued to ignore well documented bugs that have existed
since version 1.x, to name just a few of the gripes I have heard.

ND> Perhaps we'll all be slagging off *another* client, in another forum,

I had been a very happy TB user since ver 1.5 something. I was quite
happy to pay for 2 when it came out. I would recommend it to people
that mentioned they were unhappy with their current mail program or
were actively looking for something new.

Well ... as it stands now, at least ... I will continue to be a user
of the current version (2.12) for the foreseeable future. When it no
longer meets my needs I will begin to look around again. For all
intents and purpose, unless something changes, I would not recommend
it to anyone.

I found files in two places. One place is in the "executable" tree ...
that is "c:/program files/TheBat" in a generic install (but it could
be somewhere else). The other place is the "data" tree. For me that is
"c:\my documents\TheBat". Down (or is it up? ) from there, in each
of those 'trees' there was a 'bayesit' directory with files and
subdirectories. After un-loading (or deleting) Beyesit from the
plugins menu, I had to delete *ALL* of those files and directories in
both locations before I could get bayesit to work after training.

Hope that helps.

Did you upgrade from an earlier version of Beyesit? I had some real
problems until I uninstalled Bayesit, ruthlessly deleted every
reference to it and it's data on my hard drive (I found files in
the 'Programs' tree where the bat executables are located *AND* more
data files in the Data store area).

Once I re-added the plug in and trained it (yes you will want *LOTS*
of Non-Spam to train it!) it has been working well.

Not just retrain it. You will want to remove all traces of the old
Beyesit (directories, files, etc.) before you install the new plug-in
and try to train it. At least that is what I had to do before I could
get it to start recognizing spam.

Bayesit 0.5.11

2004-08-25 Thread MikeD (3)
Hello,

Just installed Bayesit 0.5.11 and had a couple of problems that I
thought I would share. I have managed to work around them, but
hopefully it is something that can get fixed in the future.

After I deleted all traces of the old version, I installed the new
one, then started TB and added the plugin. everything *seemed* to be
fine.

Next I wanted to start training it with my saved spam, so I
highlighted the 2232 spam messages I had saved for training. I watched
the little 'status window' count through all those messages and *try*
to close the status window. That was as far as things got. The TB and
my system hung to the point where C-A-Del was needed to restart the
system. End Task did not even work.

OK ... so re-boot, remove bayes it and all traces of data, re-install
and do the same thing using the 2545 *NON* spam messages and this
worked just fine. Go figure.

Everything seemed to be fine, so I went back to Spam training. But
this time I processed it in blocks of between 300 and 450 messages and
everything seemed to work fine.

I think this has something to do with trying to move the processed
messages from my "holding" folder to the Junk folder. When I did the
spam training in those smaller blocks, the processed messages were
moved from my "spam archive" folder to the "junk" folder. But when I
had tried to process the whole batch at once, nothing was moved.

In any event, I now seem to have a working Bayesit

Yes, Paul uses a slightly modified algorithm from the original Bayes.
So does that mean it is calculating using both algorithms to create
two values?

Hmmm ... does it just ignore those 'lines' in the header? If so, I
don't think that will be a problem for me. My Kludges contains:

x-spam-checker-version
x-spam-level
x-spam-report
x-spam-status
x-uidl

And I don't think any of those are causing a problem.

Well I am guessing that because I had been running the old version of
