There is no such ability on the Touch. What you see is it.

or have the rss feed when the player is off?

See Settings Screen Screensavers. I'm not sure how 3rd party
screensavers (applets?) work... maybe as they're installed they're
added to the screensavers from which you can select.

i've seen people talking about turning off the analog vu meters and i

 Any difference?

Scanning performance with 7.6 is much faster (two to three times) if
you use SQLite as the database engine (now the default in 7.6).
Performance in other tasks feels pretty much the same. But as I use
7.6 with SQLite now as my main server I'm seeing more and more
unexplained server brain farts where doing some common taske will take
12 seconds one time and then 1 second the next. I don't think I saw
that very often with MySQL.

Cached artwork retrieval is faster in 7.6, which can make the web
interface feel a little snappier even though page generation times are
the same.

With the decreased development team within Logitech we can no longer
rely on them finding missing features through posts in various threads
in the forum. They will still find some of them but not as much as they
did before when they had a larger team. If there is something we really
want, make sure there is an enhancement request for it and then vote
for it at http://bugs.slimdevices.com

Without any written structured requirements, it's not strange that some
things were missed and with the tight time frame it's not strange that
some things had to be given lower priority and due to this haven't been
implemented yet.

Some features may intentionally not be included on the Touch because
Logitech didn't think they were critical to users, if there are any
features like this which we really miss it's important to make sure
there are enhancement requests for them and that we vote on them.
Without that, Logitech doesn't have a clue that they have removed
something that users want.

Removing features that users don't think is important is a good thing,
it means that there will be development resources that can be spent on
more important features which we really want.

By the way, I'm pretty sure it would be possible to implement both the
above features as third party applets or patches, so if anyone really
want this and is interested in doing some development...

and do you want it settable over the CLI interface so something like
 iPeng could adjust it.

Isn't balance something that should be pretty static on a Touch ?

For a Boom it's a lot different because that's a device you move around
but I'm imagining that the Touch will typically be setup in a stationary
position. Is there some obvious use case I've missed where a user would
often want to change the balance ?

If it's placed at a stationary position I suspect that a third party
applet controlling balance could be accessed through the Settings
menus.

iPeng support gets a little bit more complex, but I'm not really sure
iPeng support is important unless balance is something that's changed
often. If we want iPeng support there also needs to be a plugin besides
the applet/patch installed on the Touch.

There are several lyrics plugins, but I'm guessing you are talking about
the one called just Lyrics ?

If that's the case, the web page of the developer seems to indicate
that you also need to install the Lyrics applet through the
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer menu on the Touch:
http://open-net.vm.bytemark.co.uk/slimlyrics.html
I think you view the lyrics by going to Extras/Lyrics, you might need
to activate the Extras menu if it isn't visible through the
Settings/Home Menu settings menu on the Touch.

If you are talking about the Song Info and Song Lyrics plugins, you
can access it on the Touch by showing the track details and select the
Song Lyrics menu alternative.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Connection to mysqueezebox.com not happening

Without the factory reset, there is no way of modifying information at
all, a simple reset will just immediatly jump to the connection screen
for mysqeezebox.com without anything in between. Only the factory reset
(with the long press of that tiny button) will allow to change settings
- during those 6 hours last night, I attempted at least 10 to 15
factory resets just to change various settings. And after some hours of
sleep its still doing its 'Happy circle' routine without actually
connecting to mysqueezebox.com or giving me the opportunity to skip
that.

I am now downloading VMWare Player to install a Virtual Machine and
will install Squeezebox Server for Windows, then try to use the
Diagnosis functionality. Will my NAS with my 'real' Squeezebox Server
installation and the configuration of the Duet be in danger from that,
because then there will be two servers in my subnet?

Kind regards,

should be fitted with a muting circuit (usually couple of transistors -
could be a relay) that prevent any signal output from the DAC when input
 lock is lost.

There's no excuse for this - it's penny-pinching and bad design.

yes, I have tried both coax and optical, but problem is the same. You
could argue that my dac is not muting properly, but the problem is only
with the Touch (not with duet or DVD player) so why drop the sample rate
every time you zap from a 48kHz song to another 48kHz song?

I suspect that large libraries might be unusable with some menus
provided through Custom Scan/Custom Browse, at least with MySQL. I also
know Custom Scan can get really slow in large libraries if you use the
Mixed Tag scanning module.

Generally speaking, Custom Scan/Custom Browse is normally a bit slower
than the standard browse menus because their queries is a bit more
complex. I suspect this is also going to be the case with SQLite.

If anyone uses 7.6 and Custom Browse and have tried using both MySQL
and SQLite, I'd be happy to know how it performs with SQLite vs MySQL.
I'd also like to know if you have some problem with SQLite and my
plugins.

Your DAC is a semi-pro dac not a domestic one so I'm not surprised it
has no muting circuit. However, as you say the problem is only with the
Touch. This means that the Touch may not be correctly outputting digital

Yeah, that seems broken. These services work as saved Favorites on SBS

Until they fix this you can save such services to Favorites on MySB,

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Should volume control only affect the analog outputs?

2010-04-24 Thread Phil Leigh

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77824

Question: Should volume control only affect the analog outputs?

- Yes, I don't/wouldn't use the digital outputs anyway
- Yes, I want to use the digital outputs and want them locked at 100%
- Yes (some other reason)
- No, I want variable output for the digital outputs
- No (some other reason)

If it is possible to seperate the controls I'd like a discrete option to
fix each. If not I'd like the option to fix/not fix both together.
Simples :-)

[SlimDevices: Touch] What's your dream screen saver ?

2010-04-24 Thread erland

There has to be some non developer people or developers without any time
that have some cool ideas of screen savers you would like to see on the
Touch.

What's your best idea ?

What would you like to see on the screen of your Touch when it's not
playing music ?

What would you like to see on the screen of your Touch when it's
playing music ?
Any additions/adjustments to the current Now Playing screen ?
An idea of visualizers/VU meters different than the standard ones
already available ?

If you have a cool idea and don't know any development but can create
graphics, let us know, there might be some developers available around
here that's willing to do the development work.

We got to make some use of this beautiful color screen, don't we ?

Off Screensavers:
- a selected album cover or pic (kinda like selecting any pic on a PC
as it's desktop background)
- a cracked screen (like those fake bullet holes on cars)
- a customizable not here symbol (universal circle with line through
it)
This would require text input by the user (can this be done?)
Ex: user inputs Madonna, Screensaver is now a large red circle with
a red line through Madonna

 Hi Phil.

I think I figured it out - at least partially.

It's the ethernet jack. If I touch the ethernet jack metal frame with
my finger, hum is gone (or goes heavily down - I guess it needs to be
 measured).

It becomes even more obvious if you unplug the ethernet cable and touch
the frame then. I don't have any other cables, only power cord and
 earphones, connected to the Touch.

I guess there is no other way then returning the device. :( Or I just
listen to music with my finger plugged in into that ethernet jack. :)
Just kidding. No it's not very funny the whole thing.

Do you have any other ideas, what to do with this?

 Cheers

BTW: I just read at Amazon.de , that I am not the only one having
problems with the ethernet jack!! The squeezebox guys should have a
closer look at that IMO hot topic. If the ethernet jack turns out to be
a weak point they should quickly revise the product and the grounding
 scheme of that jack.
The jack should be galvanically isolated from the network. Since the
hum changes when connecting the cable there must be problem somewhere.
We don't want to have the poluted ethernet ground in the device.

That's definitely a problem with your Touch. Mine doesn't do that. I'd
return it - talk to Support and see if this is a known fault...

Yeah, I think you got a bum unit as Phil suggests.

I just tried all Touch outs into my AVR, cranked volume 100% on both
Touch AVR (nothing playing, obviously), no such hum while tapping

I do get a consistent hum with Touch's headphone out in this scenario,
but I believe that is normal for a headphone jack output to a fully
cranked amp volume.
Tapping Touch's ethernet has no effect on this hum for me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Analog Output Stage

2010-04-24 Thread OGS

I'm also very interested in this! Any electrolytic cap in the signal
path is bad for sound quality. The best would be no cap at all, but a
small DC across an input switch will produce pops and clicks when
changing inputs. I've bypassed the output caps on my SB2 and use a DIY
interconnect with polyprop caps in series with the signal. The
improvement is quite dramatic in some respects.

Screensaver Black is something else then Screen Off.

I'd like to see that it goes physically off. As said before
there is a program called vbetool under Linux which does this
on standard GPUs.

BTW this little project could be also called :

Green Touch;)

The point is how to switch it back on once it is off.

Either the new feature recognizes it via the Touch Screen.
E.g. just by touching the screen the OS turns the screen back on.
But if the screen is off touching it might not going to work.

The other option is to do it via settings on the server.

Or maybe by changing the startup scripts on the linux side. Which needs
to be investigated first anyhow.

I'll look into the Linux side soon.

Cheers

Cranking up power usually increases the noise floor. Hum shouldn't
exist at all on such a high-tech device. And noise is something
different then hum.

Let see perhaps it is not that easy. Perhaps some others chime in into
that discussion. Before monday I can not return the unit anyhow.

If it turns out to be a general design, production or quality issue,
I'd wait with a new order until Logitech comes out with an official
statement on the issue.

If I'd get some more people on the list, I'd write an official ticket.

Well now it looks like my headphone out cable is bad, causing my
original reported hum at 100% volume to be inaccurate.
Moving this cable around causes static and the hum to be present then
go away.

Try moving your headphone input around, actually spinning it in your

Hum or not, connecting or disconnecting or touching the Touch's

I really think you just have a bum unit (and that I have a bum

Just been able to try this on some 24/96 tracks which I couldn't do

between tracks the s-lock and sampling frequency indicator LEDs do go
out for a short amount of time (in fact at one point the 44.1kHz LED
even lit briefly when skipping between two 96kHz tracks which supports
Phil's point above) and I get a soft click. Not what I would call

this before, I guess I have never skipped between track on a hi rez

So unless you specifically want me to I won't bother making 48kHz files

2010-04-24 Thread Hickup

Interesting as well. I did a shutdown of the NAS running the Squeezebox
Server, plus switched of all devices of the Squeezebox Duet.

Now, the Squeezebox Touch will not simply sit and wait forever with the
'funny' wheel on display, now it will proceed into a timeout where I can
launch system diagnosis. Within diagnosis, there are no visible
problems, all seems to be OK.

And I talked to Logitech customer support, there is currently some
ongoing maintenance on the mysqueezebox.com servers, but he could not
tell me the current status of that. And I will receive a firmware for
the Touch for a manual install... if all of this fails, I will take it
back to the distributor and get myself a replacement and try that one.

My main target when listening to music is making this as easy as
possible, I want only a few clicks and no big amount of buttons. The
usability of the touchscreen for the Squeezebox Touch seemed perfect to
me, but this is getting ridiculous.

Kind regards,
Frank

2010-04-24 Thread Hickup

I have no idea how suddenly the update was offered on the Touch. I put
it on USB memory stick and on SD card and tried a couple of
combinations, probably it was downloaded from Squeezebox Server - I
cannot say.

But after the update installed, it was not *quite* the usual routine.
It still tried to connect to mysqueezebox.com, but after some time,
there was a timeout and I received a screen where I could change the
server... and my own was offered as well! I selected it, it is now
nicely connected to it and displays current time and date on its
display.

After 18 hours of fiddling around with it I feel kind of relieved. But
before I have another problem I will not leave it and enjoy the
sunshine outside. I will give another message tomorrow on how this ends
(hopefully), just if someone else has the same problems.

Kind regards,
Frank

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Blanking display.

2010-04-24 Thread JohnSwenson

Lets define exactly what it is that wants to be done before anybody goes
off and implements things.

For one saying just do exactly the same thing as the SB3 is not a
good suggestion, the SB3 didn't have a touch screen, its hard to use
the touch screen if you can't see the buttons. I know its obvious, but
its things like that which can mess up such a project if the spec
doesn't include them. Whats obvious to the people generating the spec
may not be obvious to the implementer. Its important that a spec really
cover everything so there is no ambiguity.

I'll start this off by going over a few things as they are now as a
starting point for how you all would like it to be different.

Currently there are three general brightness mechanisms, plus
sreensavers which can be used in some way to affect brightness.

There are two overall brightness schemes: manual and auto. In manual
you get a slider which sets the brightness for everything. It will not
go all the way to completely black. If it did it would be difficult to
ever get it out of black since you could not see the screen to change
the brightness. I personally think this is a good idea, just imagine
the forum posts from people who think their Touch is broken because
they can't see anything.

In auto mode an ambient sensor is used to adjust the screen based on
the room light level. There is an adjustment for minimum brightness
when the room is dark.

There is an override on top of these: if the screen is up near the top
of its brightness range it will dim slightly after a certain number of
seconds of inactivity, this is to increase the longevity of the LED
backlights. They have a phosphor coating to give a white light and that
coating looses efficiency with use.

Then there are screen savers. One of the options is screen off which
does turn the backlight off. The touchscreen is still working.

There is no direct brightness control on the IR remote, actually adding
a new button would get kind of expensive and most people do not have the
skills to do so. In order to have a brightness button you would have
to usurp the function of one of the existing buttons. This CAN be done
but be careful which one you choose.

For the people that want a black screen, what is wrong with the screen
off screensaver? If you have all the screensavers set to screen off the
screen turns off a few seconds after you stop touching the screen. Using
Ipeng or WebUI does not turn it back on. It only comes back on when you
touch the screen or use the IR remote. I can't imagine anyone NOT
wanting the screen to come back on when you touch the screen, so is the
problem the IR remote? You want to push buttons on the IR remote and NOT
have anything visible on the screen? If this is true do you want some
button pushes on the screen to be visible and some not? For example
pushing browse on the remote without turning the screen on seems a
little useless.

OK, so that is how it works now, what specifically do you want to
change?

John S.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Digital + Analog Output

2010-04-24 Thread Gouthrum

Hey.

Got my Touch the other day. After software update it took only 5 min
before i was listening to free internet radio, and another 5 before i
was listening to my DI.FM premimum account. Pretty sweet and easy.

I was wondering about somthing though. I'm thinking of adding sound
to my excercise room(adjacent to my living room where the touch resides
by the stereo). Now, I dont want to buy another touch just for the odd
hour 3 times a week i spend there(and allways will be listening to the
same 1 or 2 house-like channels).
(i am thinking of one more box for the bedroom, but thats another
story :).

So im thinking of buying a couple of active studiospeakers with optical
input and volume control, BEHRINGER MS20, i can get used for -50% price
and hook them up to the touch via 10-15 m(32-49 feet) spdif optical
cable of good quality(Lindy brand) i have in spare from an earlier
project.

As i have been unable to find a manual on the touch, does anyone know
if the Touch can handle simultaneously analog and optical sound
connection / output or if that is a no-go?

Thanks in advance for any info.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Problems connecting to network USB hard drive

2010-04-24 Thread oofda

When trying to connect from my Squeezebox Radio to an external HD
connected to my Touch it says...

Problem Connecting
We couldn't connect to Squeezebox Touch (USB). Make sure your computer
is turned on and connected to your local network, and that Squeezebox
Server is currently running. (yes, it is running)

My other problem is that I can't connect to the Touch from My Network
Places. The touch shows up in the workgroup but when I try to connect
is says...

\\Squeezeboxtouch is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not
found.

My computer account is in administrator mode. Sharing is enabled on
the Touch and I left the default u/p on the Touch. I've forwarded
ports 3483 and 9000 to the Touch's IP address 192.168.1.4 but I can't
ping that address in command prompt. I'm running XP home.

What am I doing wrong? Anyone else with this problem? Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Problems connecting to network USB hard drive

2010-04-24 Thread iPhone

Problem connecting to Touch from another player sounds like TinySC is
not running. Check Setting Advanced Squeezebox Server to see if
TinySC is running.

Again, I believe TinySC would have to be running for your network to
see the drive connected to the Touch (not sure about that as I haven't
tried it without TinySC running). It is a fairly complicated path to
get to the drive. There is a thread already about getting to an
attached drive via the network. I believe it is in the Touch section so
just look through there (anybody else having trouble with the Forum
Search Function?).

iwconfig wlan0 txpower off

What is Samba used for on the Touch?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Last few seconds of song being cut off...

2010-04-24 Thread deva fever

I am getting the same problem.

I am playing apple lossless files (created using itunes) direct from an
external USB drive into the touch.

It sounds great, but about half the songs I play lose the last 10 to 30
seconds.

If anyone finds a solution (other than re-ripping all my cds!) I'd be
pleased to hear about it.

does seem strange. i have been away from squeezbox for a while but i
could do a lot more things with my old SB3. almost seems like a step
backwards in this respect. not to badmouth the new touch - i love it so
far. if i am reading some of the bug report correctly, it seems like
they wanted to get it out to market and maybe some of this is coming
soon?

have Joanna Krupa Squeezebox screen savers? Seems fair and logical to
me, so maybe that IS the problem, that it does seem fair and logical to
me!

Anyway, luckily for me, my wonderful better half is a 'user' of

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Rescan on headless server??

2010-04-24 Thread Mnyb

But the ip3k players has this feature.

It was once rised as an enhancement request in bugzilla for the duet
(controller), but turned down to wontfix for no comprehensible reason.

But now when Touch is going to replace SB3 let's add this to the list
of SB3 features that was not migrated.

But on the other hand with SQlite scanning (or any newer scanner) you
cant do that without the music stopping at the end of the scan anyway.

But this will be moot when the auto discovery function is working
properly.
Then you can just add the files and wait.
I think it will come in 7.6

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Last few seconds of song being cut off...

2010-04-24 Thread Siduhe

When this problem has come up before, it's related to transcoding (i.e.
converting the file into a format that the player can handle natively)
but the Touch (when used a server) doesn't do transcoding I think.

This page from the wiki suggests that 24 bit ALAC files aren't
supported natively when using the Touch as a server (or it may just be
out of date! - all user generated content).

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server#Format_Restrictions

Assuming you are all using the Touch as a server, are the ALAC files 16
or 24bit? iTunes created files does seem to be a common factor. I will
create a few and have a test. Also, have you got crossfade on or off? I
know the OP has it switched off.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Rescan on headless server??

2010-04-24 Thread kgturner

i run the power server control plugin on my touch. this allows me to
turn on and off the server with the remote. the server is in a
completely different room. what your telling me is i have to connect a
monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the headless server, get up, go to
where the server is, and manually rescan the library or i have to turn
my primary computer and navigate over the network to rescan the library
because a feature that has been present for years has been removed. that
is a glaring and ignorant omission in my opinion.

I think they deliberately want to simplify it, there s a lot of good
reasons for that. Lets focus on things that actually impacts how you
interact with the music.

A quagmire of bizzare UI options that's only there to please folks
aesthetics sense, may be hard to test and maintain with a small team of
dev's .

Support may also be pleased when they can guide folks trough the menu,
knowing where things actually are.

Never the less I thinks it's here 3'rd party dev's come in to the
picture .
The licensing for the SqueezePlay that resides on the players had
recently been opened up so 3'rd party dev's actually can do things.
Duet was launched with a much more strict license so nobody modified or
made applets for it that is also fixed).

Hopefully there will be a rush of activity as now both server and
client are open to play with.

I'm going to try Erlands screensavers now..
