Isn't balance something that should be pretty static on a Touch ? For a Boom it's a lot different because that's a device you move around but I'm imagining that the Touch will typically be setup in a stationary position. Is there some obvious use case I've missed where a user would often want to change the balance ? If it's placed at a stationary position I suspect that a third party applet controlling balance could be accessed through the Settings menus. iPeng support gets a little bit more complex, but I'm not really sure iPeng support is important unless balance is something that's changed often. E.g. just by touching the screen the OS turns the screen back on. But if the screen is off touching it might not going to work. The other option is to do it via settings on the server. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Connection to mysqueezebox.com not happening
Interesting as well. I did a shutdown of the NAS running the Squeezebox Server, plus switched of all devices of the Squeezebox Duet. Now, the Squeezebox Touch will not simply sit and wait forever with the 'funny' wheel on display, now it will proceed into a timeout where I can launch system diagnosis. Within diagnosis, there are no visible problems, all seems to be OK. And I talked to Logitech customer support, there is currently some ongoing maintenance on the mysqueezebox.com servers, but he could not tell me the current status of that. And I will receive a firmware for the Touch for a manual install... if all of this fails, I will take it back to the distributor and get myself a replacement and try that one. My main target when listening to music is making this as easy as possible, I want only a few clicks and no big amount of buttons. The usability of the touchscreen for the Squeezebox Touch seemed perfect to me, but this is getting ridiculous. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Connection to mysqueezebox.com not happening
I have no idea how suddenly the update was offered on the Touch. I put it on USB memory stick and on SD card and tried a couple of combinations, probably it was downloaded from Squeezebox Server - I cannot say. But after the update installed, it was not *quite* the usual routine. It still tried to connect to mysqueezebox.com, but after some time, there was a timeout and I received a screen where I could change the server... and my own was offered as well! I selected it, it is now nicely connected to it and displays current time and date on its display. After 18 hours of fiddling around with it I feel kind of relieved. But before I have another problem I will not leave it and enjoy the sunshine outside. I will give another message tomorrow on how this ends (hopefully), just if someone else has the same problems. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Blanking display.
Lets define exactly what it is that wants to be done before anybody goes off and implements things. For one saying just do exactly the same thing as the SB3 is not a good suggestion, the SB3 didn't have a touch screen, its hard to use the touch screen if you can't see the buttons. I know its obvious, but its things like that which can mess up such a project if the spec doesn't include them. Whats obvious to the people generating the spec may not be obvious to the implementer. Its important that a spec really cover everything so there is no ambiguity. I'll start this off by going over a few things as they are now as a starting point for how you all would like it to be different. Currently there are three general brightness mechanisms, plus sreensavers which can be used in some way to affect brightness. There are two overall brightness schemes: manual and auto. In manual you get a slider which sets the brightness for everything. It will not go all the way to completely black. If it did it would be difficult to ever get it out of black since you could not see the screen to change the brightness. I personally think this is a good idea, just imagine the forum posts from people who think their Touch is broken because they can't see anything. In auto mode an ambient sensor is used to adjust the screen based on the room light level. There is an adjustment for minimum brightness when the room is dark. There is an override on top of these: if the screen is up near the top of its brightness range it will dim slightly after a certain number of seconds of inactivity, this is to increase the longevity of the LED backlights. They have a phosphor coating to give a white light and that coating looses efficiency with use. Then there are screen savers. One of the options is screen off which does turn the backlight off. The touchscreen is still working. There is no direct brightness control on the IR remote, actually adding a new button would get kind of expensive and most people do not have the skills to do so. In order to have a brightness button you would have to usurp the function of one of the existing buttons. This CAN be done but be careful which one you choose. For the people that want a black screen, what is wrong with the screen off screensaver? If you have all the screensavers set to screen off the screen turns off a few seconds after you stop touching the screen. Using Ipeng or WebUI does not turn it back on. It only comes back on when you touch the screen or use the IR remote. I can't imagine anyone NOT wanting the screen to come back on when you touch the screen, so is the problem the IR remote? You want to push buttons on the IR remote and NOT have anything visible on the screen? If this is true do you want some button pushes on the screen to be visible and some not? For example pushing browse on the remote without turning the screen on seems a little useless. OK, so that is how it works now, what specifically do you want to change? [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Digital + Analog Output
Hey. Got my Touch the other day. After software update it took only 5 min before i was listening to free internet radio, and another 5 before i was listening to my DI.FM premimum account. Pretty sweet and easy. I was wondering about somthing though. I'm thinking of adding sound to my excercise room(adjacent to my living room where the touch resides by the stereo). Now, I dont want to buy another touch just for the odd hour 3 times a week i spend there(and allways will be listening to the same 1 or 2 house-like channels). So im thinking of buying a couple of active studiospeakers with optical input and volume control, BEHRINGER MS20, i can get used for -50% price and hook them up to the touch via 10-15 m(32-49 feet) spdif optical cable of good quality(Lindy brand) i have in spare from an earlier project. As i have been unable to find a manual on the touch, does anyone know if the Touch can handle simultaneously analog and optical sound connection / output or if that is a no-go? When this problem has come up before, it's related to transcoding (i.e. converting the file into a format that the player can handle natively) but the Touch (when used a server) doesn't do transcoding I think. This page from the wiki suggests that 24 bit ALAC files aren't supported natively when using the Touch as a server (or it may just be out of date! - all user generated content). http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server#Format_Restrictions Assuming you are all using the Touch as a server, are the ALAC files 16 or 24bit? iTunes created files does seem to be a common factor. I think they deliberately want to simplify it, there s a lot of good reasons for that. Lets focus on things that actually impacts how you interact with the music. A quagmire of bizzare UI options that's only there to please folks aesthetics sense, may be hard to test and maintain with a small team of dev's . Support may also be pleased when they can guide folks trough the menu, knowing where things actually are. Never the less I thinks it's here 3'rd party dev's come in to the picture . The licensing for the SqueezePlay that resides on the players had recently been opened up so 3'rd party dev's actually can do things. Duet was launched with a much more strict license so nobody modified or made applets for it that is also fixed). Hopefully there will be a rush of activity as now both server and client are open to play with.
