Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch won't boot -- endless 15 second cycle of logo/blank screen

2018-06-14 Thread iPhone

.
First thing I would do is verify the polarity of the plug on the new
power supply. By verify I mean both ways, by the diagram on the PS as
well as with a DMM. If it is reversed, not good. Some idiot on EBAY was
selling really cheap power supplies he picked up on the cheap, the
reason, the power cables were wired backwards before they were
encapsulated and nobody caught it until after the run. Fine if you know
this and cut the original plug off and install a new properly polarized
plug not so good if you don't. If you have anything else plugged into
the Touch, unplug them (headphones, USB Stick or Cable, RCA Jacks). Just
want to be testing with a completely bare Touch.

Other then that since it doesn't work with the SB3 PS now either, it is
one of two things, the Touch is dead and needs repaired (if it is not
fried) or the SB3 power supply has died. Can you verify the SB3 PS still
works with an SB3?

Have you made any changes to Settings lately?

Open the -Settings- Panel then goto -My Music- tab then scroll down to
*-New Music Limit-*. I don't know if this can even be set to Zero, but
if it is, there would be no new music shown in LMS. I also don't know if
this is date sensitive or not, the way I see My New Music is the last
100 Albums added, when a new one is added, the 100th oldest one is
pushed off the list and all other Albums more up one.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

Just wondering when you say "local Server" are you talking about the
LiteServer built into the Touch Firmware? If yes, you are always going
to be losing time because the Touch wasn't setup to keep great time as
it was designed to display the time from a Server running LMS that is
most likely connected to the Internet and synced to a Time Keeping Site
or one's ISP Time making the time on the Touch fairly accurate.

Of course this all depends on whether or not I am following what is
going on.

Who is fighting? I didn't see any fighting in my post and as you said,
just actual Facts! My post was educating the obvious uneducated. An END
needs to be brought to the never ending reviving of the Linear Power
Supply Myth (especially when the unit getting said $300 Linear PS has
internal switching supplies after the external PS)! Yes power supplies
are important, but only the uneducated idiot buys a $300 Power Supply
for a Touch that only retailed for $299!

Next is the silly premise that "it sounds better" with an out of spec
PS, IE the "beholder" has magical calibrated ears but in reality actual
has imagined everything to validate their actual lack of knowledge. Just
exactly how does one go about attempting to "educate" somebody that
can't apply knowledge and science because they depend on their perceived
imagination? And of course, ones ears can easily discern certain things
like the differences between listening to music from a 3 inch full range
taped to a cardboard box versus a pair of home-brew three way speakers
with poor cross-overs versus a pair of Vandersteen Model 7 speakers all
being feed by Ayre Acoustics electronics! But when comparing ANY power
supply against another with the Squeezebox Touch, no matter how great
one's ears are, the only one that is going to actually sound different
will be a defective power supply! There will be no increase or decrease
in sound stage, no higher clearer highs, no deeper extended bass, IE no
change whatsoever between in spec power supplies with the required
minimum audio filtering!

So how does one "educate" these individuals, I'm all ears (pun
intended)!

April First has long passed so please don't post such incorrect rubbish
based on your perception that your ears are somehow calibrated test
equipment!
Output volume is NOT affected one bit by excess current, it is neither
louder or lower output. And since the 2.5 Amp is close enough to spec
(especially for the analog op-amp section), you aren't hearing any
differences whatsoever! More over, the SBT has multiple internal
switching supplies inside the unit so changing the external power supply
as ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT on the Touch performance as long as said PS
delivers the minimum required voltage and current while being designed
to use with audio equipment (clean enough). The Touch is NOT an audio
amplifier driving speakers where available excess PS current is used to
aid dynamic headroom! The only way to even remotely improve the output
specs of the SBT is to disable the internal switching power supplies and
feed those circuits directly with the proper DC voltage from battery
sources. I have accomplished this and measured the improvement with
actual test equipment, it however is not even remotely worth the time
and expense to do this when one can just feed a high end DAC for a much
better result using the Touch only as a file transport! I would not have
done it if Caleb hadn't sent me a box full of "beyond bothering to
repair" Squeezebox units! Simple way to prove this is to buy a 6VDC
battery and feed your Touch with it! Zero ripple, zero noise, zero
feedback, zero hum, zero ground loop, nothing but perfectly clean power
with all the reserve current one can image if you use a 6VDC 10Ah
rechargeable battery! You will not hear any difference unless the actual
AC power supply you are currently using is DEFECTIVE!
Linear Power Supplies are a useless addition to a Touch as well as a
waste of money with the SBT. No real improvement is possible (other then
a slight improvement from using a battery as the external power source,
especially if ones mains are really dirty with the switcher passing that
onto the Touch).

Agreed. I just checked mine and it is set to 3000 and I also have no
issues. Back in the early days when I was running LMS on an NAS if I
made a playlist larger then 1000 (I had started a Playlist of my
favorite 3 songs from every artist on my server to play every Thursday
in a 3 for Thursday style), I started seeing issues. With todays high
speed multi-processors and GBs of RAM, it isn't the issue it once was.
But if one is trying to use the smallest least powerful micro server one
can get away with, then Playlist Track Size could become an issue. There
are several hundred variables here, so when one starts seeing
performance issues, one of the first places to look is Track List size
just to rule it out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Override 500

2017-09-18 Thread iPhone

Zombie wrote:
> There isn't any > button in Artists or Albums, just a list.

.

If you are referring to the "Shuffle" button, it is on the squeezebox
device display for Example on a Touch the Shuffle Button is just to the
left of the left most Volume Bar Speaker Icon. One can also "Shuffle" a
playlist from LMS by clicking the same Shuffle Icon in the Main Right
Pane of LMS (it is in the exact same location between the Loop Playlist
Icon and left most Volume Bar Speaker Icon).

One can change the Total Number of allowed Tracks in a Playlist in LMS
under Settings> Advance Tab > Performance (which is under the drop down
tab) > Maximum Playlist Length. The setting is variable but has two
fixed meaning, if one enters "0" then there is no restriction on
Playlist Length (this can really slow down a server if one is making
5000 track playlists) and the other fixed setting is 10 which is the
Minimum Length Playlist Limit IE numbers 1 - 9 are illegal inputs. Any
other numbers chosen will be the maximum allowed Tracks in a Playlist.
Example: by putting 250 in the box, no playlist can exceed 250, so when
the two hundred and fifty first song is added, song one is deleted by
pushing it off the list. The exception to this rule is when one is using
Tidal, then the list maximum is 500.

Lastly I know this will not work for the OP because he is using Tidal,
but when using one's actual Library to play ALL Favorites randomly I do
not use a playlist or Shuffle. I copied my 5000 favorite songs to a
separate specific Library. When I want to listen to ALL my favorites
randomly, I point LMS at my Favorites Library, then I pick Random Mix
from the Main Left Panel. Then the number of Favorites in a huge
Playlist can't slow down the Server due to some huge Playlist because
there is NO Playlist. Once the Touch gets 21 songs loaded it will
display the last 10 songs played, the current song playing as number 11
plus the next 10 randomly picked songs to be played when scrolling
through the list on the display. Once it plays song 11, and song 22
would be add, song one is pushed off and 11 will now be the current song
playing since the list will now stay at 21 songs. NOTE: For those that
have huge libraries and want to do this, I recommend building a NUC or
Raspberry Pi server so you have two Servers (your huge library Sever and
your small Favorites Server so you don't have to do rescans). Since I
have a Separate Vortexbox Sever just for Music and a second Vortexbox
Server for Movies plus my 5000 Favorites, I just use the IP Address of
my Movies Server when opening LMS in a web browser so I no longer have
to do any Library pointing or timely rescans of a huge Library anymore.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] TIDAL FLAC silent?

2017-05-30 Thread iPhone

starwalt wrote:
> I thought so? They advertise the app as supporting hi-fi and CD quality.

Welcome back. The SB Touch is great kit!

First a quick clarification, it isn't "supporting hi-fi and CD quality",
it is "offers high-fidelity, CD sound quality" IE one in the same in
other words hi-fi CD sound quality. To my knowledge it is Red Book CD
streamed as FLAC there is no hi-fi high resolution streaming on the
Touch (A MQA enabled DAC with HiFi/Master enabled in your Tidal account
is required for that).

Also on the URL you list, I can't find one word that says MySB.com
supports Tidal much less high quality Tidal FLAC files. It says that
there is a Tidal App. My neighbor was having similar issues and they
were all solved by running LMS 7.9 on his server and enabling the Tidal
Plugin in LMS.

So my question is if you have set the SB Touch for FLAC only, have you
noticed if the sound drops out when the song you have picked on Tidal is
actually only available as 256 or 320KBPS MP3? If you are locked into
FLAC, it would not play the MP3 IE silence. Could this be what you are
seeing? Even with a HIFI Tier $19.95 a month account, that doesn't mean
ALL the songs you pick to stream ARE Hi-Fi FLAC, the HIFI Account allows
you to stream ALL the music Tidal has no matter what the format. When
using Tidal with LMS 7.9, there is nothing to set, it is all handled
automatically.

I could be missing something here as I only have a few months experience
with Tidal solving all my neighbors issues. So if its not the MP3 issue,
please give the Forum as much detail as you can to what you are seeing
IE the song you picked, the artist, and what album it is on and is it
for the whole song or does it start after X play time?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Scanning Issues

2017-04-11 Thread iPhone

If it were me and I had no idea what was going on, I would not be
looking for other Plug-ins. In fact, I would remove ALL Plug-Ins plus
turn off any of the standard options IE go back to basics. Then see what
the behavior is in the most basic LMS setting. Then if all is well,
start turning on the options you have to have one at a time and see what
happens. If all is well at this point, then add only one plug-in at a
time until things go nuts again, when they do, that is the problem. Then
let everybody know which Plug-in set thing off so you can get feedback
if there are compatibility uses with it or with something else already
installed, then make the choice of which one not to use.

I also have a huge music collection so a Clear and Rescan ALL is not
something I want to do. I only want new music looked for. And speaking
of library size, is there a reason you are using 9 drives with some of
them 1TB when storage is so cheap? Not trying to be a jerk or busy body,
but I don't even have a Laptop or USB drive that is less then 2TB.
Upgrading to larger drives reducing the number would probably also
increase performance.

 How to connect HDD???

You can't connect a Hard Drive directly to a Touch. Only a USB device
as in Thumb Drive, USB Stick, or USB Drive. It has to have a USB
interface.

When it comes to USB Drives, if using a USB powered USB Drive, I
strongly recommend it be a Toshiba. The drive MUST not draw more then
600 milliamps at start up and best if under 500. It is best if it is
fully USB Standard Certified. Be sure the drive is formated in one of
the formats that the Touch can read IE NTFS, FAT32, ext3/4, etc. It is
best not to use more then 80% of the formated capacity of the USB
Drive.

On external powered USB Drives, it is best not to use a hub. Disable
all the sleep and energy saving functions for best TinySC performance.
If the USB Drive acts/mimics a CD drive when connected to a regular
computer, it will not work with Touch unless this feature can be
permanently removed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] connected my Touch to SBS via ethernet for the first time (wow!)

2011-02-05 Thread iPhone

Howard Turkster;608553 Wrote:

Ethernet? i.e, if I already don't like the wifi, would powerline
Ethernet set me up for similar disappointment? Or is it known to be
 fairly similar to hard-wired Ethernet?

Hello Howard, nice topic and discussion you have going here. Trust me,
there is absolutely no difference between which method you choice
(Ethernet, WiFi, Powerline Ethernet, Cable Ethernet) to do when it come
to the music/audio quality, none period! Every method used ends with the
same means, check sum verified data transfer IE it all has to be correct
or its resent. We are also talking of the transfer of data here (Ones
and Zeros) as it is turned into analog music in the player hence there
is no music signal to be affected by whatever data delivery method you
decide to use. For some reason a bunch of people start thinking analog
music once the data has left the computer when it is still only digital
data consisting of Ones and Zeros. And digital data that isn't analog
music yet is extremely hard to corrupt as a dirty Zero is still a
perfect Zero.

What can differ is the reliability/integrity of the Data being
delivered. Just as it is best not to go WiFi wireless from Server to
Router to Squeezebox because this involves two wireless hops. My
personal believe is that Ethernet is the most reliable followed by
Cable Ethernet then Powerline Ethernet, then WiFi. Also don't over read
into this as WiFi done right can be just as reliable as Ethernet its
just more work to get it right.

If it were me (and I haven't seen your home), I would go with a WiFi
router since the Server is directly above the Touch. Even the worst
WiFi router made should have no trouble going though a single floor.
But this is assuming you don't live in an apartment or housing area
where your neighbors house is only 21 inches away from yours (high
density of WiFi routers usage which can cause interference).

As to Server choice, if you go WiFi you can use the up stairs PC and
have the bonus of having a WiFi network in the house and the laptop (if
it has WiFi) can be a Controller using the WebUI. Or you could still
look at a dedicated SBS Server being upstairs using WiFI or in the
listening room. An Atom Motherboard makes a great dedicated SBS Server
with Vortexbox installed (the ISO is free) or take an old PC and
install Vortexbox on it.

So IMO, WiFi is the easiest as long as one can install an interference
free network (using NetStumbler helps identify other networks and pick
the best channel to use). Powerline Ethernet is fairly easy but is more
expensive the just running Ethernet cables.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Searching for advice of usb use

2011-01-27 Thread iPhone

If one isn't expecting to much and realizes that TinySC is not SBS
running on a PC, then TinySC can be a means to listen to local tunes. I
use TinySC in my SUV and at the cabin every weekend.

I have used both large drives (2TB) and small drives 320 to 500 GB with
99 percent being FLAC so we are talking about 16,000 to 125K in total
tracks without issue. Album Artwork can be an issue also. Make sure
that the artwork is all under 600x600 and no huge file sizes. TinySC
also seems to do better with -5 compression (besides one really doesn't
gain anything by using -8 in the first place).

BUT, there are some things to know and realize. TinySC is NOT SBS. It
has limited resources and is of course slower then SBS running on a PC.
If you know what you are doing and do it straight forward and wait for
each command to be completed, TinySC is completely usable. If one is
the type that changes their mind halfway through something and inputs
command after command, one will have issues with the built-in server.

The type, model, and brand of USB drive can be important also as some
drives just don't work. I have had great success with the USB Powered
Toshiba USB drives. Older external powered USB drives that don't have a
bunch of features tend to work well. Drives that act like an Optical
drive when plugged into a PC just don't work. Avoid drives that spin
down or sleep after each access.

One very important thing to do is not to fill the drive up completely
with music. After the drive is formated, only use about 85 percent of
the formated total for music for there needs to be free space on the
drive for TinySC to use. Granted TinySC doesn't need all that space but
the drive will perform better if its not filled to the brim with music.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Poll - Do you actually use the touch screen?

2011-01-27 Thread iPhone

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85129

Question: How Much do you use the touch screen?

- Never - IR, Android/I-device or Web Gui.
- I only use Touch Screen
- Occasionally.
- Half the time I use the touch screen.
- More touch screen than anything else?

I have several Touch Squeezeboxes. For me it really depends which Touch
I am talking about. One Touch is mounted in the wall as a Controller
and source for the kitchen ceiling speakers. This Touch gets touched
often. When the Touch is in the SUV, it is the only interface as well
as at the Beach or Cabin. I often use a Touch as a Controller. The
other Touch units just get used when I happen to be up and next to them
as I have iPeng on both the better half's iPhone and mine. And as I
said, I often use a Touch to control other Squeezeboxes in the house as
they do make a great localized Controller also.

The display is getting a bunch of face time on most of the units so the
display might as well have the dual purpose as a touch input device, not
just a display IMO.

So what is the reasoning for the poll? Were you thinking from your use
that the Touch just really only needs an LCD screen for a display
without touch?

As for IR remotes, I couldn't tell you the last time I used an actual
Squeezebox remote. I used the Harmony 1000 about two weeks ago to start
a player in that room. I have more then 10 Squeezebox remotes in a
drawer that haven't been touched in well over a year.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch As Pre-amp

2011-01-26 Thread iPhone

WARNING: It is important to be very careful and follow proper setup when
determining if it is possible to use only a Touch (or any other
Squeezebox) as a pre-amp to directly drive an amplifier. It is
important that before the amp is turned on that the Touch (or other
Squeezebox) is verified to be at its minimum digital volume setting and
that 100% output option is disabled.

The thing to do is try it. My son and now several of his friends are
using a Touch, Adcom GFA-555SE, and a pair of Vandersteen Model 2
Signature II speakers and are enjoying the minimalist setup immensely.

Soulkeeper is correct that the Touch might not have enough gain to
drive the amp loud enough or it could have to much. So again the only
way to find out is by trying it. If it has to much gain then the simple
thing to do is add inline attenuators (this is also required to be safe
for the speakers if the Touch IS able to over drive the amp). I prefer
fixed attenuators by finding out where the limit is as this will always
keep ones ears and speakers safe. If it doesn't get loud enough for you,
then its time for a pre-amp with a healthy gain stage to drive the amp.
Line level RCA outs are normally enough to drive an amp above the safe
level of most speakers, but all amps don't have the same amount of
gain. As an example, my Class A amp is fine with any Squeezebox or
Transporter driving it and the speakers are safe as it never gets
louder then I can stand listening even at full output from the
Transporter. Where as I HAVE to have attenuators if I drive my Cinepro
directly with a Squeezebox.

Again be careful when testing. Do things one thing at a time. And
double check the setup before applying power to the amps.

If you do a Sync'd stream, ALL Players get the stream of the least
capable player because there is actually only one stream. So if its a
true 96/24, it will be downsampled by S.o.X. if your server can handle
that and the Touch gets that as well. If you are not Syncing but just
playing the same 96/24 on both the Touch and SB3, then the Touch gets
96/24 and the SB3 gets downsampled S.o.X. version.

In my mind this isn't really an issue because if one is Syncing a bunch
of players, one really isn't sitting in one place and doing serious
listening anyway.

Another vote for the Toshiba Canvio 1TB or any other Toshiba USB powered
drive.

As for the WiKi, that chart was created during the Beta and was mainly
from the Beta testers connecting anything with a USB plug up to the
Touch and seeing what happened. Its not meant for telling people what
is best or even what works, again it was to see what the Touch would
recognize and what they did when connected. Its not even a chart made
from Production SBS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Another SB Touch vs. Sonos dilemma

2010-12-31 Thread iPhone

I have to agree with GaryM. I have multiple Squeezebox Networks setup
(own more then one home and have a Beta Test Network setup) and don't
have a single issue with any of them. Yes, the Sonos is just plug them
in, but boy what a price is paid for that and some flexibility is
lost.

It is my opinion all that is needed for a trouble free Squeezebox
experience is a good well working interference free WiFi Network, a
dedicated SBS Server, and properly placed Squeezeboxes and WiFi
Router/AP.

Will an NAS work, sure it will. But the larger ones Music Collection is
and the more things one tries to do, I feel one needs a true dedicated
SBS Server. This can be as simple as an Atom based micro PC to an old
desktop running Vortexbox. NASs were not designed to run programs or
act as servers. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage, but when it
comes to SBS, I say it means Not A Server.

I say build/buy a dedicated SBS Server and as many Touch, Booms, or SB
Radios that you need.

to have something automated whether its because they don't have the

collection is so large. It is easy to use and set rules. It doesn't
mess up any of my album art the way iTunes does. Additionally the
Update, Resize, Replace function can be very handy. Between all the

AlbumArtExchange does have very good images, but its manual and only
has about 130K covers. As an example out of the nine Flim the BB's

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Compatible 32Gb USB Memory Stick Req'd

Stick with the major name brands and/or ones certified to the actual USB
Standards Specification. Yes these are the more expensive ones but one
most always gets what one pays for and will probably have less
problems/issues in the long run with name brand USB Sticks.

I have had good luck with SanDisk Cruzer, Kingston Data Traveler, and
the MicroCenter store brand Sticks.

As a side note, be very careful about buying USB Sticks off of EBAY.
Many are off brands labeled as major brands and other are even
completely counterfeit. One of my better half's employees bought a
128GB Kingston stick off of EBAY. It said it was a 128GB stick when you
plugged it into a laptop but there was only 4GBs of actual memory. I
opened it up after EBAY voided the sale and said he didn't have to
return it. It had a cheap 4GB chip made in China inside it. The outside
was a very good copy of an actual Data Traveler.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A touch remote?

2010-12-02 Thread iPhone

One word iPeng. Get some kind of 'iThing' and download the iPeng app.
This gives you in your face anywhere your WiFi network reaches control
of any and all Squeezeboxes on ones network. And one ends up with an
Apple device that can be used elsewhere. iPad, iPhone, iTouch all make
great devices to run iPeng on. A used iTouch with iPeng is way cheaper
then buying a stand alone Squeezebox Controller plus one ends up with
an iThingy to use also.

Sure there are tablets, netbooks, laptops, et al but most are more
expensive and larger (read cumbersome) then a simple iThingy.

So for cordless portable control, I vote for using iPeng.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Will this usb hd work with the touch

2010-12-02 Thread iPhone

MNBY is correct. Any USB drive that acts or mimics a CD Drive when
plugged in is one to stay away from. Any USB drive that is over energy
conscience and can't have those features turned off is one to stay away
from. Drives that sleep between each drive access are ones to stay away
from. Large USB drives that are actually multiple disks in a single
case can cause problems.

Lastly if one really needs 2TB of storage space for ones Music, I say
its time for a dedicated SBS Server. It is much more powerful and full
featured. The largest drive I use with my Touch is a 1TB Toshiba
Canvio. I have multiple USB Powered Toshiba drives and haven't had a
single issue with any of them. I also have an older 1TB WD external
powered USB drive that plays well with the Touch but it is one of the
ones that doesn't have any sleep or power saving functions. I have yet
to get a 2TB Seagate USB drive to work with the Touch.

Thanks again to the Touch hardware and firmware development crews. But
just a suggestion, if you guys don't already have a production run

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Problem with USB HD

2010-11-10 Thread iPhone

While it is looking for file music it stops playing? You can't do
anything while it is scanning the drive. Do not try to play any music,
search, or anything while it scanning the HD. Just let it sit there and
do its thing.

Also the scan can't deal with large artwork files. Delete any files
over 600 X 600 and any hires files IE large file in KBs.

As for 24/96 FLAC files, it is best not to use anything above -5
compression when using TinySC.

 me to consider? Thanks...

Hello. What OS is on the PC? If it is Windows, all you have to do is go
to the Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer), open the Directory
tree, go to the artist then the song and hover the mouse over the song.
This will show the current data, right click on the song and select Edit
ID Tag. It will open a window to edit or add tagging info. Its built
right into dBpowerAmp. If you need to do a whole album like adding
The to the Album Artist and Artist, highlight the whole song list
then right click and make global changes.

Or you could download MP3TAG and use it to modify tags. It is very
powerful so be careful. I recommend practicing on songs copied over to
another drive and having a full complete backup before using MP3TAG.

just because the wall wart has HF noise doesn't mean its getting back

has the wall wart plugged into the wall or a power strip away from the

This is a non-issue in most cases.

Have any of you been through this re-discovery process, where you find

Just exactly how is this a problem with the Touch?! Shouldn't the post

The Touch is doing what it is supposed to do. It can't help if one
feeds it a poor/badly recorded or engineered recording. The Touch also
can't help it if it reveals lacking components in people's systems
either. It has been incorrectly blamed for that also.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum. Recommendations: save your money and
put it toward a great DAC or Transporter. Paying more then $25 for a
power supply makes no sense with the Touch.

Quick Question, WHY? Is your wall-wart PS bad? Is it causing a ground
loop?

Cost wise and audio benefits wise replacing the OEM Power Supply
doesn't make sense when the OEM is just fine. They did a very good job
on the internal regulators on the Touch and it has internal switching
supplies so replacing the OEM switcher accomplishes nothing as its
really only acting as the supply voltage just as the AC power cord does
on ones Amplifier.

That's not the issue. The Touch is not designed to do any USB output

ever effect the Stereophile Component rating? I am surprised it was
even rated at all so I am just happy it made the list.

As for the USB, what are they going to do, put a B in parenthesis

If I am not mistaken, Stereophile reviews components not Tweeks or

Where do you live, that might help get you some answers? Another
question is do you approach everything in life with such gloom and

The Touch says out of stock which does not mean discontinued! They are
out of stock because demand was higher then they projected. Again a
good sign. Logitech went to the expense and trouble to get the Receiver
FCC re-certified so that it could be sold with the new WiFi chip/card.
If they were letting the line die, I ask, why bother with the trouble
and expense?

This is one of those times that if one wanted one they should have
pulled the trigger before stock was depleted. Now one probably has to
wait for a production run and a boat before getting one.

commenting on your setup as I wasn't. I was just typing in general
because your post reminded me of my thoughts on digital cables.

I wouldn't have the Kimber D-60 if I didn't have my Dodson DA-217 MK2-D
Digital Processor (was used between Dodson and Esoteric CD Transport). I
tried it with my Transporter and Touch but don't use it with any of my
Touch units. I use the Blue Jeans Digital cables when the Touch is used
to drive a DAC via the COAX Digital out.

may try connecting through the power lines (I'm not going to string

stick with USB sticks, though I suppose that may become old fast as my
library of 96/24 FLACs increases. Next, I shall try SD cards (which
shouldn't be different from USB sticks).

 Guido F.

Would you mind explaining how you can remotely even think this? There
is absolutely no Audio difference between streaming using the Touch
whether it has a wireless or Ethernet connection!

Analog Audio is NOT involved or send over the connection. It is
completely digital data from a digital data source IE starts as
Digital, is sent Digital, is received Digital, and then is either sent
to an external DAC again in digital or sent to the the Touch's internal
DAC in digital form. There is absolutely no place or part where anything
can be affected with how it arrives from the Server to the Squeezebox.
Both WiFi and Ethernet use digital transfer methods that verify that
what is received is exactly what was sent.

So since the exact same One and Zeros reach the Touch no matter if WiFI
or Ethernet is used, the only answer is that ones brain has overridden
ones ears based on bad assumptions formed on misconceptions,
misunderstanding technology, or improper comparisons to analog.

Use the Coax Digital out on the Touch!

If one just has to use a DAC with the Touch, use a DAC with Coax S/PDIF

With both Toslink and COAX S/PDIF output available on all late model

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Connecting Squeezebox touch to audio system

2010-09-17 Thread iPhone

There are only two ways to run local files with the Touch. One is using
an attached USB drive and running TinySC but this limits what one can
do. The other is by having a PC/NAS/Server running that has SBS on it.

I personally don't care for the NAS solution as it to can have
limitations. I think it costs less just to build/buy and Atom based
dedicated Music Server. One has all the features this way and plenty of
horsepower and resources to run SBS.

 What can be the reason?

Can the pictures be too big?
 Any other reason?

I am not in front of your setup, but if you are using TinySC, IMO it is
best to only have music files on the USB drive. The CPU or Memory is
probably getting overwhelmed with the picture show because TinySC is
already using most of the resources so the show could be causing the
Touch to lockup.

As it is, when I have a party and a dancer wants a particular song from

receiver, and that means changing the source and tweaking the volume
 knob and is generally inconvenient.

What is the purpose of that? Who wants to play inferior files on a $300
player if one already owns an iPod to play them on/from? Just plug the
iPod into the same place you were going to plug the Touch into but use
a 3.5mm to RCA stereo Y adapter.

If you are referring to a box with speakers to plug the iPod into then
its not the Touch but a Squeezebox Boom or SB Radio.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare

2010-09-06 Thread iPhone

Hi Mark. A bunch of questions since your post was long with very little
actual information to help troubleshoot. On a side note, 160GB of music
is not a large library. The smallest USB drive I use with my Touch is my
320GB only containing my Favorites. I routinely use 1TB USB drives with
the Touch. BTW, any artwork over 600X600 is a bad thing for the Touch
in standalone mode or any that are under that but with hires meaning
large file sizes.

The first most important question is, was TinySC completely finished
scanning the USB drive before you started using the Touch? Did you go
to SettingsAdvancedSqueezebox Server to see what the scanning was
doing (that it was finished)?

Have you tried using a USB Stick or Thumb drive with only music on it?
The answer from trying this should split the troubleshooting in half.
Meaning is it the Touch or the USB drive you're trying to use.

What exact brand and model USB drives are you attempting to use?

How full are these drives IE are they more then 85% full (not 85% of
the listed size but the actual working space after formatting)?

Do these drives have the act like a CD drive function on them when
first pulled into a PC? If so that is a major problem.

Do you have other files on the drive besides Music?

What format are your music files (MP3, FLAC, AAC)?

How are the drives formated (EXT3, NTFS, FAT32)?

Are these drives certified USB Standard drives?

Answering these questions will help the Forum Members help you
troubleshoot the issue.

Lastly if its reliability you are looking for, one should run SBS on a
PC or Server. Don't get me wrong, I love and have been waiting for the
Touch option and use it daily. But if I am at home anyway, running SBS
on a dedicated Music Server is the way to go. More features, use of
plugins, more speed and processing power, and the ultimate in
reliability is ones reward for doing so.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch Screen Display - larger fonts?

Have you tried the third context menu on the Now Playing screen?

From Now Playing, tap the display twice (once gets Album Art Only,
twice gets Text only), then hit the Volume up or down using the IR
remote so the Touch goes into remote use mode and enlarges the Text
overriding the proximity sensor.

As long as you don't touch the Touch it will stay in this larger text
mode. And if you do, a single IR remote use will put it right back in
away mode.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare

2010-09-06 Thread iPhone

Hello again Mark.

Using the USB Stick as I said splits the problem in half. Something
that I feel needs done (its the engineer in me, hate working on a
problem that is actually not the problem because nobody took the time
to rule out half of what could be causing the problem). We need to
eliminate your Touch as the problem. We can try a 1000 USB drives, but
if you have a defective Touch we are wasting our time. If the USB Stick
works, we can focus all our efforts on a drive issue.

BTW, it is my opinion that the Seagate FreeAgent is a poor choice for a
Touch USB Drive. But that is my experience with them, others might have
had better luck. I had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get my 2TB
FreeAgent to even work marginally with the Touch. Yes it worked, but not
just the simple create a Directory labeled Music, add files, attach to
Touch as with the Toshiba or WD MyBooks I have. The Seagate's seem way
to Green of a USB Drive to be attempting to use with the Touch IMO
(spin down, going to sleep, disconnecting from host, etc).

Three hours on which drive? It takes hardly any time to scan my 320 and
500GB Toshiba USB Drives. This is beginning to sound like a drive and
file issue.

As Phil said, I don't like two wireless hops either as it increases
resends and possible re-buffering. Any means to Ethernet that PC to the
Router? Also do you have an old PC not being used or really not needed
anymore? You could put Vortexbox on it, use it headless, Ethernet it to
the Router, move your music over to the Vortexbox, and you would be
done. The USB drive would become your backup drive.

I just put a 1.5TB drive in my better half's best friend's old extra
PC, installed Vortexbox, and used the USB drive she was attempting to
use as her backup drive.

You can't seriously be comparing Touch to an FM Radio?! Touch is not a
toaster or FM Radio or even an FM Tuner in a Receiver.

Touch is part mini computer inside a touch display Network Media
Player. It has to interface with many things to do its proper job. It
is not a simple consumer product that one buys at a Big Box store,
brings home, plugs in, and makes coffee or toast.

There is obviously an issue with your Media (Stick or USB drive) or
your Touch needs returned because it is broken or defective. Are either
or both of your Media completely full or almost full of data? Touch
needs working space on the drive. Have you tried deleting all the .
files (all the files that start with only a period)? This will force a
complete rescan as if the drive or stick has never been on the Touch.

Have you thought about running SBS on a PC or Server? If Internet Radio
is your thing, why not get a Boom or SB Radio? But if you want it on
your main HiFi I again suggest running SBS on a PC or Server as this
brings the most features and reduces the load on the Touch.

Touch is a great NMP. Can it stand alone, it can, but the more that is
asked of it, the more likely there could be issues as it runs out of
its limited resources. Which is why I suggest running SBS. Do I use
Touch stand alone, I do everyday in my Expedition. But where I have
access to SBS, I hardly ever use it stand alone. YMMV.

I think it is VERY practical as this premise assumes a major change in
the magazine and review business, not just applying the idea to TAS or
Stereophile without major changes. One that fixes the major problem
with High End Audio Magazines and the no comparability or useable value
in a product review. How long have John, Wes, and Art been doing this?

You actually think if more equipment that real consumers could afford
were reviewed each year that advertising revenues wouldn't go up?

I can almost guarantee that if something doesn't change, both magazines
will be a thing of the past or at a minimum have fewer and fewer
subscribers. I don't subscribe to either anymore as they no longer have
any value other then bathroom reading. I get the Recommended Components
issues a couple months after its out every year for a Dollar at the
Flea Market. That issue still has some value as reviewed products are
actually rated against their peers.

 Kal

Sorry you feel it was directed at you Kal, it wasn't. I was speaking
about what TAS or Stereophile might need to do, not what you needed to
attempt (unless your thinking of starting a HiFi rag). That is why I
used JA, Wes, and Art as examples. Ad revenues are down as are
subscriptions or I wouldn't get my bi-monthly renewal bribe of less
then a dollar an issue.

TAS and Stereophile still have some clout and well followed reviewers.
The model could be supported by additional ad revenue that this format
at these two magazines would probably generate. The equipment for
reviews comes from the manufacture so there is no cost there. The
standardization of reviewers home systems could be a cost of employment
and probably have components available at cost by manufactures.

The odd thing about this current thread is that nobody has responded
opposing the view that the product reviews are not worth much since
they are in a format that doesn't lend itself well to comparison.

I find that revealing and that a change is needed.

Comparative reviews of high end audio component seem impractical to me.
That's fine for Consumers Report, or for Blu-ray players in a HT
 magazine.

I've subscribed to Stereophile for ages, and periodically to TAS. I
ENJOY reading the reviews, but most are for products far more expensive
than I'd ever buy. But there are also reviews of more modestly priced
gear, such as Kal's forthcoming review of the $299 Touch.

Over the course of time, there have been reviews of products that might
suit my needs. That's how I learned about the PSB speakers I now use.

I agree if we are talking about $250,000 a pair speakers. But what
about audio gear that the majority of listeners buy or can afford?

If I can think of it and plan it, could it really be that hard or
impractical. OK, the year ahead. We will take 5 amps in the $6000 range
and review and compare them to each other for the February 2011 issue.
We will take 5 dynamic speakers in the $1 range and review and
compare them to each other for the April 2011 issue. We will take 10
speakers in the under $3000 range and review and compare them to each
other for the October 2011 issue. We will take 6 pre-amps under $5000
and review and compare them to each other for the March 2011 issue.
June 2011 is speaker type month, we will take 5 speakers under $25K of
different technologies and compare as well as pro and con the
advantages of each technology type. It could even be arranged that each
month or quarter had a specific spotlight which might even increase ads
and newsstand sales. And so on

I also subscribed to Stereophile for years and recently did not renew
mainly because of the last two years. I also no longer subscribe to TAS
but find that I buy a copy of it more often then I buy Stereophile
anymore. Really out of all the Stereophile subscribers, how many can
afford a $150K turntable and more importantly how many subscribers
would buy one if they could afford it? I am betting the number is less
then the number of full time employees at Stereophile! To me that is a
waste of magazine space as well as taking away from equipment I would
love to see reviewed but rarely or never see.

I also want to see reviews which might be the problem for me as I don't
consider what is now being published reviews. Not quite Fluff or Opinion
Pieces because the measurements are still included, but where are the
comparisons or peer examples? I have a major problem with the constant
stream of reviews of the latest super expensive components with them
all ending up being the best thing the reviewer has reviewed lately.
While not a lie, because the reviewers are being swamped with the
endless stream of better, more expensive, and new products to review.

There were tons of equipment I looked for reviews in TAS and
Stereophile after CEDIA last year that either had never been reviewed
or hadn't been since the 1980 when both magazines still reviewed a
decent amount of equipment most people could find a way to buy.

Maybe its just recent years of articles that have no use for me. Having
approximately 4 articles worth reading a year is not reason enough for
me to keep a subscription.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Review in upcoming Stereophile issue

2010-08-30 Thread iPhone

Kal Rubinson;573310 Wrote:
Actually, I did it in July but there are substantial latencies in print
 publishing.

 Kal

That is their undoing in this age of Have to have it NOW. Other then
prints silky pictures and the advertising dollars, web reviews have it
all over print with one exception below.

I did like the Editorial about Stereophile reviews being Real and
Accurate in I believe the June 2010 issue. Very good point in being
able to trust that the reviewer actually read the manual, unboxed the
unit, used it, and tested and measured it's performance. Plus
Stereophile reviewers have a documented history of reviews to read
through, compare against, and if the unit/model has been reviewed in
the past, make a direct comparison.

What I would like to see happen: We need a middle ground between print
and web. We also need a means to have 2 to 3 knowledgeable reviewers
compare the same gear in a known range to get multiple views based on
peers IE not memory of a reference. The problem in my mind with both
TAS and Stereophile is the reviewers are hearing todays great gear
while waiting on tomorrows with no reference point forward or backwards
and devoid of direct peer comparison. Todays manufactures (except the
one offs or they only build 12 a year types) have enough units to send
out 3 amps to 3 reviewers working for the same magazine at the same
time to be reviewed head to head with 4 other amps in its class. Same
for speakers, source and pre-amp. I am of the option that a proper TAS
or Stereophile would rotate the reviewers in 2 to 3 year shifts on
specific price range gear to be compared to the Recommended Component
in that class. These three reviewers do amps under $6K for 3 years then
go to amps over $15K for three years to ... you get the idea. Reviewing
appropriate sources, pre-amps, and speakers during those stints. As in
no $150K speakers when one is reviewing amps under $6K. One guy each
year gets the added duty (or only duty) to preview/announce all the
hot, ultra expensive, or new gizmos so that the other reviews can have
meaning. We the reader are keep abreast of all the new stuff (awaiting
a real review next cycle) and have reviews of current gear that have
comparison value.

If I have muddied the water without being clear, my problem with both
TAS and Stereophile is it is almost impossible to use the review for
anything but leisure reading because there is almost absolutely no way
to use it for comparison to anything IE its a review of a specific
product based on the specific product with a small mention of an
impression based off what the reviewer considers His reference. The
reviewers references are not even the same so they aren't references
after all are they? In fact, they are what the reviewer considers His
reference and that is a dangerous thing IMO. They should be called the
reviewers home system and not made out to be anything other then that
because in most cases that is all they are.

companies have had multiple products reviewed year after year while
many others have never had a single review.

Because the readers expect to see the same brands reviewed year after
year. Porsche and Ferrari for cars, McIntosh, Conrad-Johnson, Wilson

Logitech is not going to be in the list, because the folks who

I'm amazed that the Transporter ever got reviewed.

Think about what the business of these audiophile magazines is.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Have SBS scan USB HD, write database for TinySBS?

I don't remember where, but I think I read that TinySBS is just SBS
running in a limited mode or something to that effect. So is it
possible to add the capability for SBS running on a PC to scan a USB HD
as TinySBS would, write the database info, and have TinySBS use that
info when that USB HD is then connected to the Touch? That could save
some time waiting for scans...particularly first-time scans and 'renew
 database' type scans.

Might that only be possible on Linux systems?

 Thanks!

That kind of defeats the purpose and muddies the water. How is the
Touch going to know what did what? What if you don't have SBS running
on a PC?

The idea is that one can plug a USB drive in or 8GB Stick and the Touch
will scan the media and build a DB. In my mind its more a function of
determining what is attached to the Touch and building a DB when the
USB port is active then just a function of scanning.

Looks like I stand corrected w/ regards to my original post - there are

A bit off topic, but I just have to respond. TinySC will NEVER be like
or what SBS is on a Server. Its not even meant to be. Its a feature to
allow one to use a local library without a Server with the knowledge
that features such as plugins are not available, speed and response are
reduced, and again that it is NOT SBS.

People are not complaining because its not supposed to be SBS (and the
few that are just still don't get it). TinySC does what it was meant to
do which is NOT a full substitute SBS running on a PC or Server. The way
I think about TinySC is that it lets me use a Squeezebox where I
couldn't before and that it can be a way for new users to get started.
The new user has no over expectations of TinySC because they haven't
used SBS before.

Back on topic, I think the TAS and SF reviews will focus on the Touch
as a way to get started with digital file listening but will steer
clear that it could ever be imagined as a replacement for a Linn or
McIntosh solution.

 Thanks again!

Question: Why spend $57 on a Power Supply when you already have one
(plus the additional cost of end plug, cable, AC lead, enclosure and
your time)? Sure it could be a fun hobby project but there is nothing
to be gained.

The reason I ask is there is no improvement over the OEM supply because
there are internal switchers inside the Touch AFTER the 5 VDC input. I
have run the Touch directly off a 6 VDC alarm battery and compared the
Audio output to the OEM PS using AudioDiffMaker, there was no
difference. Listening tests did not reveal any differences IE all of us
heard absolutely no difference much less some night and day difference.

Since its a DIY, you need a fuse for sure. But in my opinion you need a

2010-08-17 Thread iPhone

Are you doing daily updates or do you just grab one a week or something?
We shouldn't be near the number of writes they say you start having
trouble at, but who knows.

Did Caleb or anybody put out a White paper or block diagram on the
Touch? I don't seem to have any in my Touch file area. I would like to
see if there is a major common area other then memory that deals with
both the IR and Display.

I wonder if it would be worth wild to fall all the way back to Red Boot
and watch the memory block test? I'll check and see if I have a script
for that. I wonder if there would be any value in modifying my audio
testing script to test video?

This Touch plays fine from all outputs, can be controlled from WebUI
and Controller, the IR remote is basically useless, and the display is
intermittent? Does that about sum it up? No commands work on the IR?
Does the display change size when attempting to use the remote and can
you tell if the proximity sensor is working? On the display, is it more
not responding to touch or a garbled display? What I am asking is it
appears to be directly related to IO in general that doesn't use
Ethernet or WiFi? Idea, connect a USB Mouse to the USB port, does it
work properly? Keyboard?

I know this is a big rock I'm throwing, but I want to get a current
picture in my mine of what is happening now, not what 'was' happening
or adding more noise from reading all the posts.

And if there are supply shortages to explain the lack of supply to

We have an answer now. The Touch is now only going to be sold from the
' Logitech Website '

This is why there are no new retailers carrying the Touch. This is why
there is no stock at Amazon.

The Touch is NOT discontinued, just now only exclusively available from

on the website if your logic was even remotely true?

If it were being discontinued and replaced, would it not make more
sense to blow them out in every outlet available? And more importantly
they would not be at full list MSRP on the Logitech Website. I could
sell 100 of them in a month if they would wholesale the Touch.
Crutchfield and Amazon could sell thousands. And if they were upgrading
it, it would probably still be called Touch, it would just have a newer
processor and more RAM while only going into the supply system when the
current Touch units were all sold.

I heard that demand in the EU was two to three times what they had
projected.

I think it is more of a move to get things under control through
inhouse sales and put the division on a better path. At least that is
my hope.

Because the third-party people are doing a great job. Check the

one and have it run SBS being a dedicated Music Server for less the $25

dedicated under 30 watt Music Server will pay for itself over running a

But that's just my opinion and probably a little more then my two cents

Certainly as fast as the Duet receivers have been. I have everything
ethernet wired and only use the wireless for the Duet controllers.

Last weekend I tried running the Touch with it's own internal server in
conjunction with a separately powered USB drive. Under that
configuration I most certainly noticed the slow response you are
talking about. Far slower than I was used to running the server on my
 computer.

This is correct behavior. The small CPU and minimal amount of RAM in
the Touch can never compare to a Xeon Quad Core running SBS. The OP was
not talking about using TinySC, but using an NAS with SBS running local.
But again, I would compare that to just being barely better then
actually running TinySC on the Touch. YMMV.

Again my opinion, but its time for the OP to have a dedicated Music
Server that is NOT an NAS.

No Music unless you switch to MySB.com for an Internet Stream. If one
is running TinySC and the HD is off there is no access to local
files/music.

I don't like the current behavior of when a HD goes to sleep or is
powered down with TinySC still running. And since one can't do anything
anyway, my suggestion is if one is going to save the few watts of
letting the HD sleep or be turned off, one might as well Eject the USB
Drive and unplug the Touch also.

When using TinySC, I just let the HD and Touch stay running. We are
talking less then 9 Watts for a Touch and USB powered USB Drive.

Wasn't that my suggestion if one doesn't want to use the less then 9
Watts by leaving it running, one might as well Eject the USB Drive and
unplug the Touch also? I guess from where I sit the 9 Watts is
basically nothing in the grand scheme of things and it is my opinion
that powering down and powering up (and the scanning that goes along
with that) is harder on the drive then just leaving it running 24/7 in
a stable state. Just my opinion YMMV.

The part I was talking about being unhappy with is how TinySC deals
with USB Drives that like to sleep, spin down, or are external powered
and power is removed and/or reapplied. That's all I was saying. Sorry
if that wasn't clear. I have no problem with ejecting the USb HD and
powering off every time in general. Its just that I use my Touch so

The Touch playing FLAC over your system should sound great. I can

Is it the same song each time? Is it the same type of song each time as

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Scanner on Touch keeps crashing...

2010-07-31 Thread iPhone

That would be the first place I would look also, sounds like there is
album art larger then 600x600. In iTunes I don't know a quick way to go
about finding large Album Art. Hopefully somebody that does will chime
in. The better half wanted album art on all her iPhone music and when I
had iTunes go find it, it grabbed some 2600x1800 monster for the missing
album art. TinySC can't deal with anything like that (glad I maintain a
completely separate library for the iPhone).

Also is there some reason that you just have to use iTunes? If I was
going to run TinySC on the Touch without an external SBS server, I
would have nothing to do with iTunes. The reason, there is no need
since the Touch with TinySC could just be an isolated system.

As for a green solution, running TinySC on the Touch with a USB
certified USB powered USB Drive (I like and use the Toshiba Drives)
gets about as green as it can. Yes a SheevaPlug uses less watts but
when you add the Squeezebox and external powered USB drive back in its
more then the 9 total watts of the Touch and USB powered drive. Having
said that, running a FitPC2 or Vortexbox Appliance SBS Music Server
24/7/365 cost less then $25 a year. Now that is very green and allows
for SATA internal drives and just plugging the USB drive up when one
needs to do a backup.

2010-07-19 Thread iPhone

Think you are fine with SBS 7.6. The Touch is trying to log into
MySB.com so it can update to the newest Firmware.

Have a go at this. Try doing a back swipe to get off the spinny screen.
Then press and hold down the Back/Left Button until it drops back to the
Home Screen. Then goto SettingsAdvancedUpdate and select your Server
not MySB.com as the place you want the update from. Update and all
should be well.

I really hate this has to be connected to the Internet to setup the
Touch. They should have put a menu page in that asks if you have
Internet connectivity and if you answer NO, then a warning that if the
Touch is being setup for the first time it needs a connection to get a
proper Firmware Update, but allow those that are current to move
forward without Internet. A warning and instructions is far better then
being forced to HAVE to have an Internet connection.

Or have a warning page come up that says it is best to have an Internet
connection when setting up the Touch for the first time so it can get
the latest Firmware with an option to establish Connectivity or Proceed
Without it!

Agreed. The requirement to update firmware on first connect is a serious
usability fail from Logitech, in my view.

 R.

Can't really put it into words how strongly I feel about this subject.
It has killed two of the Commercial applications I had worked on for
months when I first found out about the Touch. Granted its only for
1000 to 3000 Touch units which volume wise means nothing to Logitech
but would have meant about 150K to 500K for us.

We did a field test with 5 full setups and its just not worth the
headaches from having to pre-setup or actually do onsite customer
installs with Touch units already connected once for Firmware update
instead of just being able to ship it to the clients (well over 90% of
these installs won't have Internet which is why this Touch local server
setup is perfect for them, but Logitech requires Internet before using
Touch). And then hope the client never has to do a factory reset, those
calls drove us crazy.

How hard would it have been to have the Touch look to see if there was
a local server first with a greater Firmware then was shipped and get
an update from that instead of demanding Internet access? One business
model has servers in the setup that would have been up to date (have
higher firmware to DL then Touch ships with) and would have eliminated
both the Internet requirement issue, having every client have to have
and setup a MySB.com account (hard to do without Internet), resolve the
issue if a client needs to do a factory reset and allow direct shipping
to the client.

Yes, I have found some ways around this but clients don't went to hear
about complicated workarounds that non-technical employees might have
to do. They just want it to work like we demoed it to them all the
time. In hindsight it looks like we would never have been able to get
our hands on 3000 Touch units anyway. Pity, it would have been a fun
project. The really sad thing is, we couldn't do this with Sonos or
another NMP if we wanted to and cost wasn't an issue, they just don't
have any model like the Touch!

 Cheers now.

Then why bother or waste time and money on the SheevaPlug. Go straight
to a dedicated full time PC based Music Server with an internal SATA
drive. Doesn't need to be a name brand PC, just a DIY case with an Atom
Motherboard. Use your current external drive as the backup drive (you
need backup no matter what you decide to do). Your situation might be
different, but if I were looking for the best results, that is what I
would do.
