[TV orNotTV] Re: SortaTV: Columbia House closes
I was a member of Columbia House (I think it was called Columbia Record and Tape Club when I joined, which would give you some idea of how close I am age-wise to the dinosaurs) and also of RCA's (later BMG) similar club, which had product from some labels Columbia didn't ... and vice versa ... What I found them useful for was the various artists compilations which never seemed to be in stock at the local retailers I frequented (surprisingly, not even at the once-mighty Wherehouse), so I remained on their member list for many years after fulfilling the required purchases. BMG went away in 2005 after being bought by Columbia House and merged into it, but I had cancelled with them in the late 1980s as their offerings became less and less desirable (they moved away from compilations and greatest hits albums and toward more current stuff, so there came a point where it was pointless, pun intended). I stuck with Columbia until somewhere around 1992 or 1993, when I had repurchased on CD everything I wanted to keep as an upgrade from vinyl. By that time, the little catalog that accompanied the order card had a DVD section in the back. These days, if I want something on CD or DVD I look at Half.com first. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Re: If 'a la carte' happened today...
I solved the entire dilemma. I cancelled my DirecTV on Monday. I should point out that I live just under 25 miles away from Mount Wilson, from which virtually all broadcast television service -- excluding some LPTVs -- transmits, and I get great reception even though I am using the ancient antenna which is mounted in the attic of my apartment building. (I mean ancient as in it was already there when I moved in back in 1994, has not been replaced since, and no one at the property management company knows when it was originally installed. It might have been there when Newton Minow made his vast wasteland speech, for all I know.) Anyway, excluding a whole bunch of foreign language, religious, and home shopping channels which I never watch, here's what I get with the antenna: - All the traditional broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CW) from OOs, plus the all-rerun networks MyNet and ION. - Two traditional English-language independents and one non-commercial indie (KCET, which has the English-language feed of NHK on one of its subchannels). - Two PBS stations, one of which also runs PBS World (the other is owned by the L.A. Unified School District and uses its subchannels for instructional programming and WorldView. - Classic television channels Antenna TV, Cozi, Decades, Laff. MeTV and Retro (plus the all-classic game show channel Buzzr). - Movie channels This, Movies!, GetTV, Escape, Grit, and The Works. I'm not sure where to classify Bounce anymore as they moved all the reruns to daytime and are all-movies at night now. 30 channels. No monthly bill. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Re: Sadly, There Will Not Be A Stan Freberg Presents: The United States of America Part 3
I remember a story he told late one night while a guest of Tom Snyder's Late Late Show about one of the television commercials he produced over the years. The cigarette brand Lark had a series of commercials in which they drove down the street in a truck with the sign show us your Lark package on the side and edited together the results from those who complied. The audio for same was the William Tell Overture. Freberg satirized the ciggie spot in the commercial he did for Jeno's Pizza Rolls, except it was set at a fancy dress reception and the concept was show us your pizza roll. The audio was the William Tell Overture. Near the end of the commercial, two Madison-Avenue types in grey pinstripe suits, brandishing cigarette packs looking suspiciously like Larks, tell the host of the party they want to talk to him about his choice of music. Pan right, and there are Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels, in costume as the Lone Ranger and Tonto, with Moore telling the ad men funny ... we wanted to talk to you about the same thing. (Tonto: Pizza roll, kemosabe?) The spot was a big hit, except that CBS wanted a waiver from Silverheels about playing a stereotypical Indian before they would air it. Freberg's response? But he's Tonto! Nevertheless, the network insisted so he trotted over to Jay's house to get the waiver. Silverheels' response? But I'm Tonto! The punch line: At the time, CBS owned the syndication rights to the Lone Ranger television series. The commercial was included on the VHS videocassette in the Stan Freberg box set Rhino released some 15 years or so back, which also had four CDs of his commercial releases (including The United States of America) and some of his radio advertising work. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! MeTV (and Antenna TV, and Retro, and Cozi) doesn't lose big brand advertisers because of the currentness of their programming. If that were the case, TV Land wouldn't get those ads either. The problem is that the classic diginets have far too much of their viewership over the age of 55, which the ad community long ago deemed unworthy of being marketed to. The other Britcom I recall getting widespread PTV airing is Keeping Up Appearances even though I never got into that one. And speaking of comedies I don't get, The Red Green Show is a Canadian production which is reasonably popular on PTV stations. Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: TARDIS materializes at Retro TV
Generally speaking, although the network is the direct descendant of the original classic television channel, Retro Television Network (which dates back to 2005), its original owner, Equity Media Holdings, had a bad financial tumble in 2008. That was when the current owner, Henry Luken, purchased the network from them. Unfortunately, in the process their relationship with the major syndication companies -- notably NBCUniversal and CBS Paramount -- soured and for the last few years the schedule has consisted of programs available through lesser syndication companies such as Classic Media and the Peter Rodgers Organization, plus the handful of old shows that have fallen into the public domain. Their late night schedule now includes such non-retro fare as *Cold Case Files* and *DaVinci's Inquest*. Meanwhile, the more popular retro shows moved to Antenna TV and MeTV (and more recently, Cozi), which as a result has gotten those networks a lot of carriage, often at the expense of Retro. The move to carry the classic *Doctor Who*, plus the previously announced *Mystery Science Theatre 3000*, is a good one as it starts to reposition Retro as a channel with content you can't find elsewhere. I think they should pursue *Dark Shadows* next, as SciFi never did make it all the way through the series before cancelling it ... and that was more than ten years ago anyway. I'm not 100% certain of this, but I think television stations were always allowed to use the suffix -TV even if it wasn't officially part of their assigned call. Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: KNBC's scaled down Universal newsroom named after Brokaw
Not quite, Jim. When analog television for full-power stations was discontinued, stations had three options: - Call letters plus the suffix -DT - Call letters plus the suffix -TV - Call letters only, unless also on a co-owned radio station somewhere, in which case a suffix is required Go back and look at the database again and you will find that, among other things, the Univision stations have the calls KMEX-DT and KFTR-DT. Several L.A. stations have the -TV suffix even though it is not required (KDOC-TV, KWHY-TV, KPXN-TV, to name three). The only two stations that *have* to have a suffix are KCBS-TV and KABC-TV, and (if you count them as a Los Angeles market station, as DirecTV does) KVCR-TV in San Bernardino. I had thought that three-letter calls on television stations which were grandfathered in after they separated from their radio stations still required a suffix, but I checked the only one of those I could think of, KOB in Albuquerque, and it does not have one. [TV orNotTV] Re: TVL Has Apple for Chicago Improv 'Teachers'
I think you will find, upon closer investigation, that most of the old movie fans' complaints revolve around three specific changes made over the past several years at AMC: - Commercialization (especially spacing of breaks at such short intervals that the breaks seem longer than the content between them); - Abandonment of the classic movies which made up the entirety of AMC's schedule for the first couple of decades (even though a lot of them were B-grade two-reelers); and - Removal of Bob Dorian, who was the long time on-air host (for those unfamiliar with Mr. Dorian, think Robert Osborne without the smugness). TV Land's only change is going from full-on retro when it started to greatest hit sitcoms of the 1990s and 2000s now. Given that there is nothing I would call classic on their prime-time schedule, it doesn't surprise me that their audience accepts original programs as if they were just another off-network rerun. The only retro classic shows on their schedule now are Gunsmoke, Gilligan's Island, Andy Griffith, Bonanza, Brady Bunch, and all of those are in the daytime. Come 6:00pm, it's Everybody Loves Raymond. I know when I was there the last time, I wondered why more buses weren’t routed there. The buses in DC have always been used well to transport riders to subway stations. From what you say, it seems that LA has finally caught on to the way it’s done. North Hollywood Station is the major hub, since it is the terminus of the Red Line and is closer to the center of the Valley measured north-south. Universal City can never be more than a minor hub because it is literally in the southeastern corner, with fewer options for lines to be routed in/out or terminating there. I’ve used the 222 many times after shows at Warner Brothers, since I usually stay in Hollywood. However, when it’s going to arrive is always a crapshoot. It stuck to the schedule better when it was routed between Burbank Airport and Inglewood. You're going to feel really old when I tell you that it hasn't been routed that way since 1995, when that segment was broken away from Line 212 (it was done to make a way-too-long line more manageable). The night schedule is subject to a couple of factors that can affect its on-time performance. During Hollywood Bowl season, it frequently gets hung upon the south end in the traffic when a performance lets out (but then, so did Line 212 pre-1995) and on the north end the late night service also operates the Sherman Way Line 163 service all the way west across the Valley. These days, Metro has a real-time bus arrival tracking system that can be accessed by text from any cell phone. It uses GPS to see where the bus actually is then calculates the time it should take for it to get from there to whatever stop you're at. I've used it and it's about 98-99% accurate. There’s also service at least ‘til midnight on Ventura, which takes care of the CBS Studio. It’s only Disney that’s a problem. Line 150 runs once an hour on Ventura all-night between Warner Center and Universal City Station. There is a timed connection on the east end to a special Line 656 shuttle that goes through the Cahuenga Pass to Hollywood, and it connects to both of the all-night lines in Hollywood (217 on Hollywood Blvd. and 4 on Santa Monica Blvd.). So during the few hours overnight that the subway doesn't run there is still connectivity between the two sides of the hill. I'm less nervous about walking late at night in the Burbank Media District than I am on either Ventura Blvd. or in Hollywood, actually. But your point is well taken, Melissa, in that it's still more apprehension-causing than doing it in broad daylight. Sadly, there isn't enough day-in, day-out ridership demand to run Line 155 later. That was tried five or six years ago and it ended up being three or four passengers on a bus that seats 45. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] Tonight transition begins, and so do the layoffs
As a Los Angeles resident who uses public transportation, I politely disagree, unless your definition of most difficult means a half-block walk from the nearest bus stop (Line 155, which connects with the Red Line subway at Universal City Station) at Alameda/Buena Vista. There are also peak-hour City of Burbank shuttles from North Hollywood Red Line Station and from the Metrolink station that have a stop at that same corner. The latter also stops farther south on Buena Vista adjacent to the west gate of Disney. Re: [TV orNotTV] Vin Scully to return for 65th season
He generally does not call *non-playoff* games played east of Denver. He has made recent exceptions for the 2007 season opening series in Milwaukee, a 2007 series against the Chicago Cubs, and a 2010 series against Boston. I read somewhere that if the Dodgers make it to the World Series, Vin would call the game on the radio network, so that presumes he would travel to the home venue of the opposing team. Since the travel restriction was something he wanted, not the Dodgers organization, he apparently has the right to decide when he wants to override it and travel. He had planned to make the trip to NYC for the June series against the Yankees, saying that he had wanted to see the new stadium, but changed his mind two weeks beforehand because it would have been a six-hour overnight flight afterwards and a series at San Diego starting the next day. We're looking forward to playing San Diego and trying to win the division, he said at the time. I think it's more important to do San Diego. [TV orNotTV] Re: NBC considers merging local sidechannels into single network
There's a reason for the Nelsons being fuzzy; Cozi fills some program slots with public domain programming (they also have copies of the ten existing kinescopes of the early Burns and Allen shows that had been done live, before George and Gracie went to pre-filming in season three); those are the slots that affiliates can pre-empt for their own programming. My recollection is that they also have the 1953 syndicated Sherlock Holmes, several Red Skelton Shows, and the Beverly Hillbillies episodes that fell into PD. The Ozzie Harriet and Beverly Hillbillies PD episodes also run on RTV and IIRC Burns Allen PD eps also run on the LPTV network America One. Re: [TV orNotTV] Prepare to Say Goodbye to the Last Resort
I have an even better indicator of a show's potential to make it to season two. For the last several years, any show on the big three (I haven't liked anything on Fox or CW enough to care) I liked enough to watch on a regular basis was cancelled no later than mid-second season. The one exception that comes to mind was Heroes, but I started tiring of it by the end of its second season and I was somewhat amazed it made it to season four. I've thought the BBC model, as discussed elsewhere in this thread, should be the way drama series such as Last Resort or Heroes are produced (ongoing ensemble cast series such as Grey's Anatomy and the NCIS group seem to work okay under the traditional U.S. model). Yes, yes, I get the desire for 100 episodes for syndication, but sitcoms are the 200-ton gorilla in that resale market and most drama series end up doing the bulk of their repeats on cable, where the BBC model wouldn't be as much of a hindrance. Re: [TV orNotTV] Is NBC Purposely Planning a DVR-Unfriendly Olympics?
Without knowing what type of DVR you have, I can only relate this to my own TiVo, which gets its listings data from the Tribune Company, meaning Zap2It.com reflects the same data. Checking their online site's Olympics coverage, it is exactly as you stated. The schedule shows a block of time with a list of what sports are likely to be covered within that block of time. As an example, the 4:00am to 2:00pm (PT) block on MSNBC for Sunday lists From London. Soccer, men's: Brazil vs. Belarus, Senegal vs. Uruguay, Great Britain vs. United Arab Emirates; volleyball, men's: Russia vs. Germany, Italy vs. Poland; water polo, men's: Hungary vs. Serbia; handball; table tennis; badminton. All the listings are in that format. I suspect NBC is just sending a list of events they expect to cover at some point within that block on that channel, and they aren't being more specific because (as we all know) sporting events do not tend to adhere to nice orderly time slots. And, like my neighbor Jim Ellwanger (he lives only about five miles from me) I don't recall the Olympics being listed differently in the past, either electronically or in that archaic print magazine TV Guide. (That last part is for Jim to chuckle at, as he has a nice collection of that magazine from when it was actually useful.) I have one of these: http://www.meritline.com/kingwin-sataide-to-usb-adapter-for-25-and-35-drive-model-usi-2535---p-50793.aspx It's useful for moving files off old hard drives, because it will allow pretty much any hard drive from the 1990s to the present to be temporarily connected to a machine via USB with its own drive letter. From there, you use Windows Explorer to copy files onto your machine's permanent hard drive. And the price is right ($19.95 including shipping). Either you purchased it at a rail vending machine (there is still a transitional period during which the day pass can issued on a rail ticket, but that is scheduled to end within the next several months, once all the vending machines are reconfigured) or you were on a bus where the operator ran out of blank TAP cards and had to issue the day pass using the interagency (Metro-to-muni) transfer. If you go to the Metro website, you'll see that day passes are officially on TAP: http://www.metro.net/around/fares/5-day-pass/ So if that post was designed to disprove what I said, I'll file it under exceptions that prove the rule. [TV orNotTV] Re: Taking in some late night TV....live
Yes, but ... The $5 day pass requires that you have one of Metro's TAP cards (a smart fare card), otherwise it is still $6 (the price it went up to a couple of years ago). Fortunately, there is an easy way to obtain a TAP card. Just board a Metro bus and pay $6 for a day pass and the operator will load the day pass on a blank TAP card (which you are buying for $1). Once you have the card, you can buy a day pass on subsequent days for $5 via the bus farebox or at a rail ticket vending machine and have it loaded to the card. Note, however, that the day pass is only valid on Metro-operated service. We have a lot of municipally-operated service (much of which precedes Metro in first date of operation) and they do not honor the Metro TAP card. For example, the city of Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus and Culver CityBus have been in existence for more than 75 years and still operate independently. The city of Los Angeles also operates freeway commuter express buses and DASH shuttles which require separate fare. Metro buses are either orange (local) or red (Rapid). The subway (Red Purple Lines) and the light rail lines (Blue, Green and Gold) are Metro-operated. The commuter rail service Metrolink, despite its name, is a separate agency and not a Metro-operated service. Another option would be not to drive but instead take the Metro Red Line subway, which has a station at Hollywood/Highland, literally across the street from where Kimmel tapes. There are park/ride lots at Universal City Station (one stop away) and North Hollywood Station (two stops away). The Red Line runs every ten minutes during rush hour, which would give you plenty of trip choices to make it to the theatre well before 5:00pm. Fare is $1.50 each way; you need to buy your ticket from the vending machine before crossing the turnstiles. From the two aforementioned stations, you need to take the train heading for Union Station to get to Hollywood. Red Line timetable: http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bus_overview/images/802.pdf (I know the schedule is dated December 2010 ... we don't change the subway schedule very often) If you also want to avoid traffic to/from Television City (and parking) for the SCG taping, Metro Line 780 is a fast connection between Hollywood/Highland Station and Fairfax/Melrose: http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bus_overview/images/780.pdf Fare is $1.50 per trip, exact change required. 780 is a Rapid line which means it only stops at major cross-streets instead of every couple of blocks ... Fairfax/Melrose is only four stops away via that line. (Bus destination sign is to Washington/Fairfax Transit Hub; stop is literally in front of the subway station entrance on Hollywood.) [TV orNotTV] Re: TiVO Question
I have a Series 2 single tuner TiVo. As Jim Ellwanger already said, that is an important distinction because only the single tuner Series 2 boxes have an RF input; that is critical because the TiVo depends on getting the output of a digital broadcast converter via RF channels 3 or 4 to function. The good news is that all of the converters on the list at the TiVo website (which Jim also provided) are controllable by a Series 2 TiVo via the IR blaster. And if you decide to get a digital cable box or a DirecTV/Dish satellite receiver later, the TiVo will integrate the two sources into a single program guide for viewing and recording (the cable or satellite box goes in via the audio/video inputs on the TiVo). I have DirecTV with a Insignia (Best Buy) digital converter on mine, because DirecTV does not carry the digital subchannels I watch (Antenna TV, MeTV, and this!) and it all works flawlessly. (Quincy moved to its own timeslot with hour-long episodes in January, and was replaced on Sunday with Lanigan's Rabbi; that was indeed due to it getting higher ratings than the other rotating series, although IIRC it wasn't that far ahead of Columbo, and the latter was never going to be a weekly series because Peter Falk refused to do more of them than he already was) The Ellery Queen series with Jim Hutton ran in the 1975-76 season and was the lead-in to Mystery Movie during its last nine months (Ellery 8:00-9:00, Mystery Movie 9:00-11:00). I was always under the impression that what did Millionaire in was that ABC overexposed it by running an hour-long version in primetime nearly every night, because they had a lot of poor-performing series and little in the pipeline to rush into development for air ... but I can't deny that it certainly spawned a lot of prime-time big bucks game shows. My favorite was Greed but that has as much to do with Chuck Woolery being the host than the game itself. On May 7, 2:09 pm, Kevin M. drunkbastar...@gmail.com wrote: I am pleased however that with Idol, The Voice, and X Factor all on the air, ratings for the whole genre should hopefully drop in the same way all of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire clones did each other in. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Re: CNN -- Not the Place for Politics
Since Group W has been mentioned, we should pay homage to the all-too- short lived Satellite News Channel from nearly 30 years ago (has it really been that long?!?), a joint venture of Group W and ABC which used its own variation on the you give us 22 minutes ... imaging liner that Group W made so famous in all-news radio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_News_Channel Mark, of course, got HLN's tagline right. [TV orNotTV] Re: Gilbert Gottfried canned as Aflac Duck after insensitive Japanese earthquake tweets
I guess those commercials are polarized ... either you love them or you hate them. Personally, one of the best commercials I've seen in recent years was the Aflac spot where Yogi Berra spouts his usual share of malaprops in a barber shop while Gilbert the Duck tries to (in vain) make sense of what Yogi is saying. As Aflac was one of the sponsors of the Dodgers telecasts on Prime Ticket the past couple of seasons, I would see that spot several times a week and it never got old. Short of it popping up on YouTube, I guess we'll never see that one again. On Mar 16, 9:03 am, Tom Wolper twol...@gmail.com wrote: I also think it is a brighter day for TV if those Aflac commercials go away entirely. I have my own quick reaction when they come on, which is to change channels or at least hit the mute button. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Re: Comcast vs DirecTV
EANS tests aren't scheduled, per se, by the cable companies or the broadcasters. The routine tests, which are designed to test the equipment that interrupts programming and inserts the message, tend to run in the late-night/early-morning hours because (for whatever strange reason) it is an equipment test, not a warn the viewer/ listener test. DirecTV does the exact same thing when the L.A. operational area test runs. It switches all receivers to the test message channel and then jumps them back to whatever channel the receiver was on before the test started. If anything, the cable and satellite companies have a harder time with EANS tests than broadcast stations, because unlike the latter, they have to have the technology to make everyone's receiver jump back afterwards. My point is: Comcast, Time Warner, DirecTV, Dish ... all will have that annoying habit. On Feb 25, 3:08 am, Dave Sikula dsik...@yahoo.com wrote: (Comcast also has an annoying habit of running EBS tests in what they think is the middle of the night, but is usually right when I'm watching something I recorded off of TCM.) -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Except that CBS would first have to *have* a cable news channel. A nitpick, if I may, Kevin.
