Versioning in Word97 is the same menu structure: File|Versions. The change tracking is carried over between the documents, but the 'versions' are not. In OOo Help: versions;file saving as, restriction there is an ! warning which states: quote Versions Saves and organizes multiple versions of the current document in the same file. However, if I use File|SaveAs and save the document as a WordPerfect (.wps) document, the File|Versions is greyed out just as it is in OOo. So, apparently MS Word (at least Word97) also does not support versioning with non-native document formats. I can test in Word2K and Word2007 later. My apologies , but I do not recognize my issue in the many, many web pages laid out here on your web site! Even finding your home site was very difficult. Briefly, I have Writer on my computer, given to me by daughters at Christmas 2007. Since then, I have dutifully invited updates/downloads from time to time as the pop-ups asking to do so appeared. On my desk top are two icons for upgrade-downloads that I presumed to be completed. Today I tried to open my Writer program but neither of these links took me to the customary letter window. Opening the Properties link, I could not find any information on the product, only repeated entries of Created: Today, February 07. 2009. 4 hours ago the same line exactly for Modified: and Accessed: Almost identical information appeared on the same General tab for the other icon on my desktop. The variation was today. February07.2009, 13 hours ago. Nowhere is there any lead in what is wrong, why the original icon transmuted into the newer one, and why there are two apparent downloaded programs sitting on my desk top rather than in the Program file folder. And worse, nowhere on your multiple web-page is there a lead as to where to go for 2007 program information. I am desperate for a sincere How To Fix link. Where do I find product info on my computer about the version I am running, how to undo, if something is not right - anything that will help me get rid of this horrendous problem that happened right under my nose today? If anyone reads this that has specific answers - a step-by-step process to follow, I will be forever grateful, believe me! Jo josie...@gmail.com

F Shoppers schreef: hi there, I m looking for open office for a small business, I found ebay have lots of them for sale but they are too cheap sounds to be not reasonable, so I wonder how can I define if it is a legal version for business or not You can download a perfectly legal version of OpenOffice.org for free from www.openoffice.org. Not only does it have no cost, it is also free software in the sense that the source code is available for any use you could imagine. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Openoffice.org for some independent background and history of OOo. Also check out their article on free software. You can use the software on as many computers you want or private, commercial or whatever use you have for it. If you really, really like it and you feel that you would like to pay something for it, it would be better to send a donation to http://contributing.openoffice.org/donate.html instead of paying people on eBay for it. They are not doing anything they are not allowed to, but the money you give to them will not help OpenOffice.org forward. You can also contribute by testing OpenOffice.org for your purposes and talking about it to people around you. This would be an even better way to help OOo than contributing money. The more people that start using OOo, the better it is. If you happen to have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to ask on this mailing list. There are many happy OOo users who like to help out. I kinda thought this would be how it works but wasn't sure Open Office included the most popular word processing software used by publishers. Does it also include Quark? Or is this a dumb question? Linda Camp Hi Linda, If you are your own publisher you can use OpenOffice.org to write your books from A to Z. If you submit your books to a printer, you can export them as .pdf-files. OpenOffice.org allows you to create a master document and have all the chapters in separate files, still allowing you to use the same style throughout the entire work. OOo has the possibility to record changes. So you can pass your chapters to proofreaders and see what they changed to your work. At that point you can decide to accept or reject their proposed changes. There is also spell checking available and grammar checking is just around the corner. On top of all that OOo is rock solid and it works on several platforms among which Linux (rock solid operating system which is virtually immune to viruses and spyware), Windows and MAC OS. If you work with a publisher and this publisher forces you to use Microsoft's formats, you can still create/edit your documents with OOo, but then you use Save As to export them as .doc 97/2000/XP. I hope this helps, Jo A big plus is that when using OOo, you don't force your proofreaders to purchase an overpriced office suite (or to break the law if they would install an illegal version) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Having used Linux for just over a year, I'm delighted at how easy it is and at not having to worry about nasties. I've been running Linux as my main OS for over 6 years and OS/2 for 10 more before that. Viruses are extremely unlikely on both platforms, simply due to the design of the operating system, something that's lacking in Windows. With OS/2, as with Linux, about the only way for a virus to take hold is via the boot sector. There are other mechanisms on both, that make life difficult for a virus. This all sounds good, and I have considered trying out Linux, but I use sever commercial programs such as Quicken Telechart that will not run on Linux. Many Windows apps will run on Linux, using Wine or Crossover Office. Wine is included in many Linux distributions and Crossover Office is a commercial product, based on Wine. Quicken will run on Crossover Office, but I have no idea about Telechart. Also, Codeweavers, the company that produces Crossover Office, contributes back to Wine, so Quicken may run with it too. www.codeweavers.com That is good to know. I have been thinking about getting a second drive and using it as a Linux drive in a dual boot configuration. This would give me the opportunity to try out Linux while still keeping my Windows drive. If you have enough memory you could also try to use Linux in VMWare. The advantage is that you can run both Windows and Linux at the same time. After you get used to it, you can reverse the situation and have Windows in the Virtual Machine for the things that can't get migrated to Linux. That way you're very safe and still have backward compatibility. Don't try it with less than 1 GB, 2 GB is preferred. Add another GB if working on Vista. Re: [users] Re: Use of open office.
If you tell someone to get it over there, then if the source code is also over there all is well. But providing access from a designated place is not the same thing as providing a copy in-hand. So, if I make a CD chock full of different language versions of OOo and Language tools, I should make sure that there is room to spare to put the source code on that CD as well? Seems like a waste of space as long as the source code is freely available on line. Of course, all this changes when I create a derivative version of OOo, then I agree I should include the source for this derivative. But as far as I understood, it was enough to provide a link to a site where it can be obtained. I am not a lawyer though, so what do I know. In fact I didn't even read the license in depth. I guess that if one wants to be on the safe side: include the source code everywhere, on people's hard disks and on CD's for distribution. Hard disk space is cheap and there isn't much demand for CD's with several language versions of OOo. Jo - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Once the quality of this list is improved, also more serious companies will be motivated to post their info on the list. The list will become a valuable place to be listed if you are a serious service provider in the OO.o space. HTH, Peter Hi Peter, I totally agree with you. I recently checked out my 'competition' and I forwarded my findings all to the mailing list responsible for updating this information. I don't think it had any effect. Hi Eduardo, In Brazil the use of Linux is a lot more accepted than in the many other parts of the world. Can't you find somebody in your neighbourhood who can help you with the installation? OpenOffice.org is included in most Linux distributions. My personal favorite is Mandriva Linux. It's a merger of Mandrake and Conectiva. You can download it from www.openoffice.org at no cost other than what your provider charges you for bandwith. You can also take up the offer of Dotan Cohen, who will send you one at no cost. At a certain point in time Publisher allowed me to create 'booklets'. The pages were printed on A4-paper, then plied into a A5 (half of A4) book. By using your product, what is my actual contract with you and do I have a choice of how to 'pay' you or 'pay' you at all? By downloading your product, will I have privacy for the work I do while using it? Hi Mary Jo, OpenOffice.org is free software. The only string attached to it is that you cannot distribute in a less liberal way than you received it. This means you can give it away or even sell it, but you can't prohibit your customer from giving it away or selling it. You have complete privacy while using the software. The software will work whether a connection to the internet is present or not. No data is sent anywhere by the program while you are using it. After the first installation there is a possibility to register your copy. It's your choice whether you want to do so or whether you want to skip that step. The software will work just the same, either way. You don't have to pay anyone at all, if you have a broadband internet connection and you can download OOo by yourself. (You do have to pay your internet provider of course...). There are distributors, who will provide CD-ROMs for people who don't have broadband. You will always be entitled to use OOo for any use whatsoever. Nobody will be able to search through your computer, you don't HAVE TO be subscribed to a mailing list, although it might help to solve problems if you happen to have some. OOo doesn't come with pop up advertising nor spam. If you happen to want to pay, you can either donate, translate the program or documentation, create templates, review documentation (OOoAuthors) but none of these things is required. Everybody is happy if you are simply using the software. And if you like it, you can spread the word, but even that is not a requirement. Once you send your documents through email unencrypted, your documents are on the loose of course. Email is not a medium that gives any guarantees about privacy. To put an 'envelope' around your mails you need to encrypt them. Check out PGP (Pretty good privacy). If you are concerned about spyware, use Hitman Pro2 to have your PC cleaned up. This program downloads and installs a bunch of Spyware killers, updates them and has them scan your computer. At the end it presents you with a report of what it found. Run it once a week and your computer stays clean. If you want less spam, use Mozilla Thunderbird, another free software product that replaces Outlook Express. It allows you to mark spam mails and have them sorted in a separate folder. The next time a mail comes in with similar word usage, this will be sorted in the junk mail folder automatically. It takes a good week of intensive training and from then on some occasional training on the spam mails that slipped through. Thunderbird can be combined with PGP if you want more privacy. Just like OOo it's also available for Linux if you would want to migrate away from the source of spyware and viruses (Windows) one day. So you won't have to learn how to use new software if you are ready to make the big leap... I'm just saying this to show that it's really a good idea to start using OpenOffice.org and other free software. Especially if you care about your privacy. Those last two tips don't have anything to do with OpenOffice.org, but I think it's interesting to know. Jo 'Cause when you export (a book's chapters and the like particularly) to word you lose stuff and when you import from word you lose more stuff and the entire exercise is generally a pain where you sit down. What I usually wind up having to do is save the FrameMaker file as text then do the thing in OpenOffice -- at least that way I don't have to deal with all the Wonderful Things microjunk persists in doing to help me then having to undo them later. The idea is to avoid word completely if at all possible. Since FrameMaker is now a Windows only app, you might try http://www.omsys.com/dcl/omni.htm for Mif2Go. Not cheap but it works. Hmm. Well, given that I'm coming from FrameMaker on Solaris to OpenOffice on Solaris and Linux... looks like text-to-text might be the only practical solution. How many FM files do you need to convert? MIF is a very structured format, OOo XML is too. It should be possible to create a conversion tool with XSLT. I even have a colleague who has been toying with that, I think. OpenOffice.org warns you when macros are present in a document and gives you the opportunity to disable them when this is the case. It is possible to have certain paths (the paths where your own documents reside) excluded from this check. To assign a keyboard shortcut to a macro use: Tools/Customize, Keyboard. The interface is a bit odd, but it works fine. You can assign the shortcut for only Calc or for the entire group of OOo applications. You have to go to the bottom of the lower left pane and find OpenOffice.org Macros, press on the plus sign in front of it to select your macro. I'm not sure but it might be legal under the terms of the LGPL as long as they don't change any of the names or anything in the source code, and if they give you the source code on request. It's still a dishonest thing to do, they're trying to get a free ride from the open source community, and to dupe uninformed people into paying them for nothing, which won't be invested in developing the project. They ask $19.99 for the package! If they would have charged $199.99 or $499.99 then people would have a reason to feel duped. It's perfectly legal to distribute OOo and ask something in return for it. In fact it's perfectly legal to charge $1000 for it as long as you don't limit your customer to either do the same or to help his neighbour and give it away for free again. It's legal to modify the code as long as you provide the source code for the changes. Of course it would have been nice of Cosmi to indicate where they got their mustard, but I don't know if they have to. I think they are allowed to change the name. What's in a name? It's mostly marketing. Oh and I just saw that they include two bonus programs :-) and they shrinkwrapped it all. $19.99 is a bargain... Cheers Paul (Paul Francis) Quality Co-ordinator [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02 9339 8097 No it doesn't come with an equivalent of Outlook, I think mostly because the OOo developers believe, with good reason, that an email program isn't an office applicaiton, and they should be separate, and there are already plenty of good Free Software email programs. I'd recommend Mozilla Thunderbird. Yes OOo can open and save to the Microsoft Office file formats. I'm pretty sure it's not compatible with Microsoft Visio files, though I might be wrong. Guy It's not compatible with Visio, but OOo Draw can do a lot of what Visio can. Visio is only a recent (maybe 5 years) aquisition of Microsoft. Before it was an independent product. I am going to talk to the IT department to see if we can switch to OOo, but before I do wanted to ask if there is there any cost to use the program in a government facility. Thank you, Michael Douglas No cost whatsoever, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Make CDs available for people who visit the library. You can charge something for the blank CDs and for handling (up to around $10) if you like. (You can charge $500 too, if you find any takers... but you might get some complaints if you do that, from people who find out aferwards that they could also have downloaded it for free.). What you cannot do is forbid the people who buy from you to give copies of their copy away or to sell it to their neighbors. If you do distribute, you have to include the source code. Convenient iso images are available that include everything you need. I think that putting a jar next to the stack of CD-ROMs telling people that as long providing those CD-ROMs is not costing you or the library anything is a good way to go. This way people who really have no money and can't even afford $5 or $10 (how do they afford their computer, I don't know) can get one for free and others can put something in the jar for the expense of CD blanks. Of course you can even lend CDs. Also check out the manuals that are being created at http://oooauthors.org/en . They are also available for free if you download them or for a very low price if you want them as books. And of course, you can always donate money, either to OOo or to another free software project, but spreading the software actually is a contribution as well. The more people that start using it, the more support it will get and the sooner this world will be a better place. Thanks Hi Mister Irish, OpenOffice.org is compatible with the Microsoft file formats, but that doesn't mean the Microsoft products are compatible with the (superior) file formats of OOo. If you want to save a file and then open it again with Microsoft products you have to do a Save As and then select the version of MS that you want to save as. It's not that it would be hard for Microsoft to become compatible with the OpenDocument file formats. It's a fully open standard and there are many programs that use it as their native file format. Microsoft deliberately chooses not to be compatible with the OpenDocument file formats. It's their loss.
