Re: Text Detective App
Ok, since there are several people who regularly report that they get very useable results from both apps mentioned, the statement that they do not work is clearly false. I have written how to use Prizmo several times on this list. There is a write-up on applevis.com. These apps require lots of practice to learn how to take a clear image for OCR conversion. Steady hands and good lighting are essential. So is lots of patience whilst learning. I use Prizmo every day. It has the best OCR engine. Text Detective is quite good as well. Bluant Q2 Pairing problem
It's my day to be challenged. I have never seen this problem before. I have had this earpiece paired with my phone once and it was successful. Now, when I try to use it, one of two things occurs. I turn on the headset knowing that Bluetooth is on in the settings on my phone. The headset says attempting to connect. After about 40 seconds, the headset tells me that no phone was found and to make sure Bluetooth is enabled on my phone. If I try to pair again, either the same thing will happen, or the headset will tell me that the pair list is full. That is the other thing that happens. Sometimes, when I try to pair, the headset will say immediately that, pair list is full. In these cases, it does not even try to connect. I have tried this on to other iPhones and I have tried it on my iPod, all with the same results. These devices all connect to other Bluetooth items with no problems. I have only had this earpiece since Christmas and, as I said, only used it once. Any ideas? Kristeen -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Possible Conflict Involving VoiceOver and Some GPS Apps
Hello, Pablo. I have tried Google Maps and MapQuest so far. If I lose the ap's internal voice guide, toggling VoiceOver from one state to the other will restore it. RE: Bluant Q2 Pairing problem
Hi Christine, You can try doing a reset. Turn on the headset, then press and hold volume up, down, and the function button all at once and let up. You should hear resetting ... You might also try taking the information for the Q2 out of your phone first. After you do this, you can try pairing again and it should work. Good luck. Re: speeding up iTunes
Hello Kristeen, Sorry this response is so late. Just catching up to list emails. If you are talking about iTunes on the computer then there is no built in way to speed up play back. However, it can be done. Some time ago Esther posted directions on how to use a script that uses quick time player. I followed her directions and now I have the ability to set up different speed increases and use them in iTunes play back. I'm not good with scripts and need to learn how to use them over again every year or so. Luckily once they are set up they just seem to keep working. You may want to search the arcives on the macvisionary list if you are a member there. perhaps someone stronger then me with script use can post the information for you. But, it is possible. On the iPhone you can find more controls and a speed up playback option is there. I think I pressed the Album art button to see more controls. Lastly the speeding up is not as good on other devices like the NLS book reader or the Victor Reader Stream so I don't use it as much as I would if the quality was better. If this would be of great help to you or others let me know off list or on and I'll try to find the post with directions. This may take me some time to get back to you! RE: is voicebook still being used / supported?
The one feature I do like a lot in Voicebook is how they display the comments in a picker fashion where one can quickly cycle through them. I've found this to be much more efficient than how the other various apps handle the comments section. a round-about way of saving pictures from mms messages on the mac
Hi, This only will work on a mac, but still pertains very much so to the iPhone, so I thought some of you might be interested. I figured out a very round-about way to save pictures from text messages to my computer without disabling voiceover on my phone. First, I had to go to the place in the message that says contains media. Then, I used my rotar to get to the edit menu, then I selected copy and double-tapped it. Then, I made a new message to myself, and pasted the photo from the other message into it and hit send. Then I went to the messages application on my mac running mountain lion and saved the attachment from the message on my computer that way. You may ask why I didn't just turn vo off on my phone and save the picture to my phone that way. The reason is because I have the assistive touch menu on so I can lock my screen, because my lock button sticks. In my case turning voiceover off would be more complicated because I have assistive touch toggle and voiceover toggle on my tripple click menu. I hope this is helpful to some one and I hope it's not too off-topic. Courtney Sent from My Macbook Pro -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Eric, I disagree with the other responders, although i can no longer see to validate this answer, when I could see, night mode in GPS products did the following: In day mode the background would usually be a bright colour, say white, with streets being black, green and other colours indicating type of road. In night mode the actual background colour would change to black, and the roads to would to make them stand out on a black background. One would assume that Feedla Pro does something similar. RE: very basic iPad question
Hi Kim, You may want to check the archive for iPad Mini as there have been a few discussions since the iPad Mini was released in late October. Anyhow, basically the iPad Mini can't really do a lot the iPhone can't do except that there are some iPad specific apps which you may or may not find useful. Unfortunately I can't think of any example right now, maybe somebody else will give one. Apart from that the larger screen is what most people find attractive and it seems from posts I have read on here that many people find a full-sized iPad almost too large as special orientation is more difficult, the iPad Mini seems to be just right to give more space but not so much to make it hard to find stuff. The iPad Mini also has stereo speakers and they would be a bit louder and probably of better quality than those on an iPhone simply due to their size. I think an iPad Mini is definitely on my list as well, but for the time being I'm sitting on the fence to see if there will be a new one in March. According to Rob from the Today in iOS podcast he doesn't think there will be any new major product announcements until June and even though the iPad Retina as the full-size iPad it is now called was updated twice last year in March and October, he predicts that it maybe the first iDevice to be updated once again. Having a retina display is certainly of no importance for a blind person unless you have sighted people in the family who would also use it, but I was sort of waiting to see if the next iPad Mini will have a retina display. Once again, Rob from Today in iOS doesn't think the iPad Mini will get a retina display until 2014, but while he is totally in the loop as far as one can be with Apple, I somehow would be surprised if it took this long considering that everything now including the new MacBook Pro has a retina screen. In any case, It's already February so I'll wait until the end of March and by then I probably will say I may as well wait until June and I know that if I wait until June and still nothing has been announced I will most definitely wait until September or October at that point. Using Pages With A Braille Display
Hi, I've been really curious about using Pages with a Braille display, so I began playing with it the other day while I was on the way home from work. Using my iPhone 4 with a BrailleNote Apex, I was able to use the Pages app to create a document, then e-mail the document to myself. The document was in Word format. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't put the document straight into Dropbox, but I'll worry about that later. Anyway, I have some basic questions. 1. Using the rotor, I was able to navigate through the document by character, word and line. Is there a way that I can navigate by paragraph or page? 2. In a conventional PC-based word processor or text editor I can go straight to the top or bottom of a file at will. Is there a way to do that in Pages? 3. Is there a way of temporarily restricting Vo so that I don't inadvertently stumble into the toolbar? 4. One more, and then I'm out of here for now. I'm a pretty good speller, but if I do make a mistake, VO will inform me that the word that I just typed was misspelled. Short of manually editing the misspelled word, how can I correct it? I tried double-tapping on the word and couldn't figure out how to bring up any suggested alternatives. How do you do that? On a related note, once the document has been drafted, is there a way to spell-check the entire thing as one would with the spell-checker in Word? Okay, that's enough for now. Press the home button twice, and you should reach the app switcher. Now flick right with three fingers to go to the previous page. You should find your screen orientation there, and you can press the button to change it. Hello, That is a very good question. I almost have to say sadly they haven't had an update to the app for a very long time. There was a lot of buzz around it at first and the developer had lots of things they wanted to implement in to it. We haven't had a peep for so long. That is a great question if they simply gave up or not? Sadly, I moved on. I currently recommend the native Facebook app along with an app called Status Report. I found using the both gets me by for my needs. Someday I can only hope that something or somebody come out with a fantastic all-in-one Facebook app. So until then. This is what we have to work with. Also, as you're moving character by character, you can use the delete key to delete the character to the left of the cursor and then insert the proper character. If you're used to the Windows cursor, this may take some getting used to on the iPhone. Re: Text Detective App
This discussion comes up from time to time, and there are many variables. There were similar discussions on the KNFB reader list. lighting is important because you are not using a scanner that has its own light source. Distance between the camera and the reading material is important, along with making sure that the camera is not tilted in relationship to the reading material. Re: very basic iPad question
I very much enjoyed doing email on the iPad versus the iPhone. Also, in many apps there are listings on the left, and specifics on the right. For example, your list of messages are on the left, and when you choose a person who sent you a message, the conversation is on the right. There is no need to go into another screen. Re: Using Pages With A Braille Display
1) With the rotor you can only navigate by character, word, and line. However, dots 1 3 5 chord with space bar scrolls right one page; dots 2 4 6 chord scrolls left one page; dots 1 4 5 6 chord scrolls up one page; and dots 3 4 5 6 chord scrolls down one page. In most circumstances, page equals screen. 2) Single finger double tap on the active edit field moves the cursor/focus to the beginning and the end of the active field. On my RefreshaBraille 18, pressing the joystick like a button activates the single finger double tap. Dots 1 3 chord places you in keyboard help. You can then press any buttons or combinations and VO will announce the function. Pressing dots 1 2 chord ends keyboard help. 3) Not that I know of. 4) When a word is misspelled and you receive the sound, do a single finger right flick to find the first suggestion. Continue flicking through the suggestions. In text messages, corrections sometimes appear before the text message (left flick rather than right flick). If you place the cursor at the end of a misspelled word using a cursor routing button, sometimes the misspelled words will be signified. Unfortunately, there are no notification marks like underline of each misspelled word. Sometimes I need to press space followed by dot 7 chord (backspace) to get the suggested words to pop up. App Called How to Cook Everything
I downloaded the app that is essentially recipes from this wonderful cookbook. I can find a recipe ok but then there's a problem. If the recipe calls for one half teaspoon of cinnamon and one half cup brown sugar, VoiceOver reads the one half teaspoon and the :one half cup parts, but skips the words, cinnamon and brown sugar. My husband said the words on the page are in different little boxes or cells much, I am guessing like a table or in columns. I tried letting VO read down the column of numbers hoping it would then read the column of words, but no dice. I tried activating Tables and Vertical Navigation on the rotor to see if they'd help but they don't even come up as choices when I rotate in the rotor. Perhaps they are app specific? Does anyone know this app? I won't ask anyone to look at it for me because it's a paid app. I can get the recipes by emailing them to myself but I'd like to understand what's going on here. Thanks. RE: Tap Tap See Privacy Statement
Hi, I decided to uninstall and then install the app again in order not to select location services on. It appears to me that the responses are somewhat slower than when the location services was turned on. However, I rather put up with the slower responsiveness, if it protects me. Has others seen a difference in the response rate when location services is turned off. I am just curious, as I can live with it. Thanks. Since the app uses crowd sourcing at least in part to provide responses, there likely will be some answers that take longer anyway. I doubt that they would prioritize people who leave location services on, but of course it's possible. I wouldn't worry too much about leaving location services on from a security standpoint. The data is likely anonymized and used for purposes like analytics. I just tend to turn location services off where there is no tangible benefit to the user, and in the case of Tap Tap See I don't believe there is. Ah, so location services is most likely used to tell the servers how to route your picture and response. This is probably also the case with similar apps. Server routing can make a difference of several seconds. Increase the distance and number of routing points increases time delays. Re: Tap Tap See Privacy Statement
Could you elaborate on this, David? Sounds interesting but I can't imagine a plethora of algorithms would exist just to help route a picture over the internet slightly more efficiently depending on where you are. It seems more likely to me that location services are used for analytics, but I'm open and interested for you to elaborate on your message. A picture would be a tiny chunk of data and I'm not aware of any apps, even dat,-intensive ones, that use your location to slightly tweak data reliability. I mean, I guess maybe Tap Tap See could route to specific servers, but do you really think they do that? Eileen and list, I noticed that every answer takes a slightly different amount of time to arrive, but I did not find any difference whether location services were on or not. I noticed that the app continued to monitor my location even after taking the picture, getting the answer and switching away from the app. I'm sure it would eventually stop using it, though. Perhaps we should see whether the developer can provide more information on this. Yes, routing to specific servers is entirely possible when location is known. For instance, I am in New Zealand. Using a server in Australia is much better than using a server in the US. If on the west coast of the US, there are lag differences between the west coast and the east coast. I don't know much about it, but a cousin who works in multinational corporate networking told me a while ago that data flow routing and analytics is one of the larger pieces of his job. A picture is anywhere from a few hundred KB to a few MB in size, so data routing can become important, if you want to minimise delays anyway. I completely agree that this is possible, I'm just wondering whether an app like this, aimed at a relatively small audience and dealing with fairly small chunks of data, likely receiving crowd sourced answers from many different places, would go to the trouble of setting up location-based routing rules and routing data accordingly. RE: changing from landscape to portrait mode
Hi Pablo, On the level of iOS you can only have the Rotation Lock unlocked or in Portrait Lock. This is done by bringing up the app switcher, do a 3-finger swipe from left to right and then find the Rotation Lock control at the bottom left of the screen. Double tap the button once and it will go to Portrait Lock, double tap it again and it will go back to unlocked. Some apps like Fleksy do have their own Setting where you maybe able to force them into portrait or landscape and other apps, I believe Netflix is one of them, go to Landscape even if you have the Rotation Lock set to Portrait. RE: is voicebook still being used / supported?
Hello Nicky, That is a good question. As far as I can tell from looking at my set of Facebook Status that I am able to open the link. I just double tap on the Status. On this page is another link which you can then double tap to open. I have to use both the native app and this because. For odd reasons I will get some status on Status Report that I don't see in my native app and the native app will show some things I don't see in the Status Report. Very puzzling! So if you find just the native Facebook works great for you. I'm glad! RE: Text Detective App
Hello, Some of the people on here have some great advice. Must concur that lighting, glare, the level of your shot, the height, and such are at great important. Some things to note are that if you get garble messages. It typically means you are too high when you take your picture. Remember if you are using the 3gs you will have less accuracy. The 4 becomes a bit better because of the higher megapixels in the camera. I find that a phone height is the limit on those. For those on the 4s and the 5 will have even a better camera and you can raise your phone higher. If you go to high the less accuracy you will have. So if you have great lighting. Re: Possible Conflict Involving VoiceOver and Some GPS Apps
As far as I am aware, you should not be experiencing such. If You were muting VO with a three finger double tap, it might make more sense. However, as you are completely removing VO from the system, the apps' voice guidance features should not be effected, unless voice guidance is using the Apple built-in speech, and turning VO off is taking precedence over the apps' call to built-in speech. Come to think of it, that may well be what is occurring. If you leave VO off before you launch the app and voice guidance then works, this is likely what is going on. You will need a sighted person to help test this theory. HI. I agree with you about the size of the mini. I too enjoy email more. I've found if I use the roter to go to containers, I can flick up to get to the reply, delete buttons etc and flick down a couple of times to get to the Message. BrailleTouch - Available on the App Store on Thu January 31
Greetings from BrailleTouch! I am very excited to announce that BrailleTouch will be available on the App Store on Thu Jan 31 worldwide. We offer a free trial version, which lets you type in braille on your touchscreen and hear the letters or words spoken as you type them. If you like BrailleTouch and find it useful, you can purchase a full upgrade from the app which will allow you to send text messages, tweets, and emails directly from the touchscreen braille keyboard. You can also copy the text you type in braille and paste it into any other app on your iPhone. The trial version of BrailleTouch is free to download from the App Store. The full upgrade is available for US$20 as an In-App Purchase. However, in appreciation of the overwhelming support we have received from the blind community, we are offering the full version for US$15 through Sunday February 3. We would like to express our gratitude to all of the generous volunteers who tested the app, to Accessible Devices, AppleVis, and Macneticos for their podcasts, and to everyone who has emailed us and posted on the VIphone and AppleVis forums and Twitter with helpful feedback. You can read more about BrailleTouch including a User Guide and FAQ at our website:http://brailletouchapp.com/ The initial version of BrailleTouch supports Grade 1 uncontracted braille, based on the North American English standards. It includes upper and lower case letters, numbers, and most punctuation. Grade 2 contracted braille is our top priority for a future upgrade. We also hope to be able to support languages other than English in the future. BrailleTouch requires iOS version 5 or later, and will run on iPhone 3Gs or later and iPod touch 3rd generation or later. We recommend using a case with your iPhone or iPod touch, as this will help you grip the phone while typing and will keep you from covering the speaker on the iPhone under the Home button with your hand. If you use headphones, we recommend a right-angle headphone plug or Bluetooth headphones. Feel free to forward this post to anyone you know who may be interested. We welcome any questions, comments, or feedback you may have. When the app comes out, we would love to hear your story about how you use BrailleTouch. You can contact us at:http://brailletouchapp.com/contact.html Many braille instructors have contacted us about using BrailleTouch as a teaching tool. We hope the free version of BrailleTouch is helpful for learning the six-key braille keyboard. If you are a braille instructor or student, please let us know your experience using BrailleTouch. We hope you like BrailleTouch and find it useful. Please download the free version on Thursday and try it before you buy it. And let us know what you think! Re: Possible Conflict Involving VoiceOver and Some GPS Apps
Hi all, I have some apps for Spanish that use audible recordings. If voiceover is on, it lowers the volume of the Spanish app and I have to keep voiceover off for it to work correctly. I don't know if this is what you're talking about but I thought I would put it in for what it's worth. I know that this is the way voiceover is supposed to work, so perhaps voiceover should be off before the app is launched. Lois, Thank you for the suggestions. There is no information in my phone about the Q2. This is why I needed to repair it. I don't know how, but it seemed to have been removed perhaps in my sleep? The 4 becomes a bit better because of the higher megapixels in the camera. I find that a phone height is the limit on those. For those on the 4s and the 5 will have even a better camera and you can raise your phone higher. If you go to high the less accuracy you will have. So if you have great lighting. Use a sheet or some sort under the document. Hold the phone not too high. You should have great results. If you are talking about the first part when you open the app up for the first time? This is the Tutorial part of where you have to swipe to go on with the four pages of it. The secret is is that flick until you get to the part where it says Page 1 of 4. Now realize that we are in the landscape mode with the Home button on the left. Once you have the focus on the Page 1 of 4. Down do the Three fingers swipe to the left. This will proceed on to Page 2. You will need to do this for all four pages of the Tutorial. Hope this helps you out and that we are talking about the same thing? ;) I found this to be one of my favorite OCR program to date. Apple Diagnostic logs
hello list, I will be going to apple to replace my Iphone 4s (currently this one is not the original but a replacement) as i am having serious issues with it freezing / locking up at the lock screen and apps are crashing, i use voiceover and most users that have read my posts here know what i am referring to... My questions are: 1. with reviewing the logs that my Iphone 4s keeps of crashes i saw the word voice over in the log could not read the rest visually as the print was small, does anyone on this board know how to interpret these diagnostic logs? 2. would sending these logs to apple accessibility be a good idea to see if they can figure out if this is software bug? if yes, how do i send the logs from my iphone and form an attachment so that they can be emailed to apple accessibility Thank you all. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Tap Tap See Privacy Statement
Hi David and Grant, If I am processing all that both have written, the privacy issue should really not be an issue. As I use the app more, I will see it having location services turned off continues to slow the responses that I will turn this feature back on. RE: Apple Diagnostic logs
Hi Marissa, I was wondering if you made a mistake and accidently sent this log to the list instead of to Apple. Anyhow, since you did sent it to the list I assume you can just send it to Apple Accessibility the same way, since it's now on the list you could just forward that email and write an introduction and there would be no need to send it as attachment. I don't want to say for sure, but I doubt somebody on the list can interpret this, such logs are strictly meant for internal use by company technicians. Re: Tap Tap See Privacy Statement
Absolutely. I would not worry much if at all about the privacy implications. Really, where there is no tangible benefit to having location services on, I turn them off mainly to save a bit of battery life and because essentially location services were designed to provide some sort of benefit to the end user. That said, I've read some interesting theories about how Tap Tap See uses your location. It's not that I am discounting them, but I would just be surprised if they are really used in that way and the developer didn't mention that as a huge advantage of their app. But yes, not a big deal.
