Adrian, MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Annoying things like erratic connection to internet using Mobile3 usb modem, documents in .tif format not being readable on screen but they print ok. When I'm working under pressure and need to be able to rely on my computer to function efficiently (as it did before SL) I resent having to find a cure and taking 40 minutes or so to connect to the internet. Whatever speed savings there are in starting up pale into insignificance compared to productivity losses because things don't work. Cheers, Michael. Easy PDF text selection. Here¹s an enhancement that exemplifies the pursuit of perfection. When using a PDF viewer such as Preview, have you ever tried to copy text from a PDF document that has more than one column? It¹s almost impossible. Instead of selecting only the text you want, your cursor selects all the text across the page, so you end up with a mix of words from every column. Mac OS X Snow Leopard applies sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms to fix the problem. It analyzes the layout of each page in the PDF to identify columns of text. So when you use the cursor to select text, you get only the words you want. That¹s a real time-saver. Sorry to hear the compatibility has gone downhill. Original versions of the TIFF format only accommodated a single image. New TIFF support multiple pages (as you well know), but .tif is pretty much a legacy extension. My guess is that the sender(s) are sending an old or incorrect MIME type in their e-mail, and Snow Leopard is relying on the .tif extension to indicate the file format. Changing the extension to .tiff probably causes Snow Leopard to re-evaluate the content on its merits, at which point the MIME type is replaced with the correct UTI. Of course, that doesn't explain why printing works, or how you can fix your problem. Sorry! If I change the suffix from .tif to .tiff , however, the documents open in Preview. Why could this be? Regards, Michael Hawkins. One downside to Snow Leopard is the way it now interprets filename extensions. Since its inception, Mac OS has made of use of hidden Creator Codes and Type Codes to identify the origin of files. In this way, a TIFF file created in Photoshop, for example, would always open automatically in Photoshop, whereas one created with, say, AppleWorks, would always open automatically in AppleWorks. The Creator and Type codes would handle it all, and the user was oblivious to it all. Mac OS was unique among OSes in its use of this metadata. Re: Your network settings have been changed .......
John, I frequently have the same problem running Tiger 10.4.11 when trying to connect using 3mobile. I have wondered whether it is because my G3 PowerBook 400 is 9 years old and still on its first set of batteries - I have to reset date and time every-time I start the computer. Sometimes the message goes away if I restart, and sometimes it does not appear if I connect to the internet by using system preferences (network connect) rather than the menu bar, but there was one time in which I had to restart by using another username and re-setting preferences under that name and then restarting in my preferred user name. Hi Susan, I don't know whether I downloaded the bundle the most efficient way or not (I subscribed and then down loaded each program individually by clicking on the title in the email I received after subscribing) or whether I ran TechTool correctly (the 700 odd mb took for ever to download on an ADSL2+ subscription) and for some reason it took me a couple of goes to burn a bootable disc so I could optimise the MacBook Pro's hard drive before creating an eDrive on it, but in the end I got there. I do not know if this is a coincidence or not, but since installing the 10.5.7 combo update my MacBook Pro will not wake from sleep and I have to press the power button to shut down the computer and, after waiting for a bit out of caution, power up again. Fortunately Word has retrieved documents that I had been working on but had not saved afresh before the computer went to sleep. The computer was running on mains power in Perth CBD. Steps I took before installing the combo update including repairing permissions before downloading, backing up using Super-Duper and using Time Machine, running repair permissions again before installing, quitting all applications before installing, restarting after installing and repairing permissions after restarting. Firewire to USB converter -OT
I'm coaching a group of 50 year old and up rowers. My digital video camera uses Firewire. That's good for when I connect to my Mac, but I want to be able to connect the video camera to a portable DVD player (Dick Smith) so while we're still out on the water I can show the crew what they're doing. Aging eyes and failing eyesight means that more than half the crew can't see the screen on the camera. The problem is that the portable DVD player has AV out (rca single plug to white, red, yellow rca minplugs) and usb port in. Is a cable available that I can plug into the video camera (small firewire connector) and the portable DVD player (standard sized usb port). Alternatively the camera has red white yellow AV out. Would it be possible to modify the AV out port on the DVD player so it takes AV in? Re: wireless broadband
Glenn, I've been using Three's wireless broadband for almost 2 months and am very pleased with it. I initially tried the express card but had trouble with that and so swapped to the USB dongle. The paperwork for the set-up left out a vital bit of information - the number to dial - but telephone support fixed that up very easily: Three has a team dedicated to Macs. The telephone number to enter into network preferences PPP is *99# and the mobile to select in the drop-down box is HUAWEI Mobile. My laptop is well over 7 years old and uses USB 1.1 but the dongle works well despite that. I've used the mobile network in Sydney (CBD), Perth (CBD) East Perth and South Perth. Re: ewire as ISP
Hi Bart, Have a look at Hutchinson 3Australia's mobile broadband, but you will need to check to see that you have 3G coverage where you are. I'm on the basic $29 a month plan, (1.5mb connection, 1 Gb upload/download a month). Simply plug the dongle into a usb port. My computer is over 7 years old - a G3 PowerBook 400 OS 10.4.10, 640 meg ram USB 1.1 and the mobile broad band runs really well. No need for a landline, and apparently Skype engin can be run over the internet connection. QuickTime problem resolved
Bob suggested that I follow Ronni's suggestion in a posting by her in the WAMUG Archive. It worked. Thank you Bob Ronni. The suggestion was: Also make sure you have the latest Flash Player Plugin v 9.0.47.0 1. Go the the Adobe Flash homepage http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/ download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlashpromoid=BIOW and reinstall the latest Flash Player for Mac. 2. Go to your System PreferencesQuickTimeAdvanced panel. 3. Make sure ENABLE FLASH is ON. 4. At the bottom you will see MIME SETTINGS Click on this button. 5. Scroll down to MISCELLANEOUS - MISCELLANEOUS FILE FORMATS. 6. Make sure the FLASH MEDIA option is OFF. 7. Click OK. 8. Restart your computer. In asking the following question I'm being merely curious, not critical. Before I posted my request for advice I searched the WAMUG Archive for questions about QuickTime. Ronni's posting didn't come up in my search. I think her posting was made about 12 days ago. Is there a time lag in indexing? If so, is there some way of looking at postings in chronological order and not by topic? Remove song from iTunes
I feel a bit foolish, but I don't know what select means in the following instruction. I want to remove some, but not all, songs from iTunes. Every song I have has a tick next to it. Does that mean I have selected every song so that if I click Remove, every song will be removed? (I don't want to do that!) Or do I have to highlight a song in order to select it, and if that's the case, will songs that have been ticked but not highlighted remain when I click Remove? In iTunes, select the item you want to remove, and then press the Delete key on your keyboard. In the dialog that appears, click Remove. If the item is stored in the iTunes Music folder (in the Music folder in your home folder), you see another message. Do one of the following: To leave the item on your hard disk, click Keep Files. To delete the item from your hard disk, click Move to Trash. The item is permanently deleted from your hard disk the next time you choose Finder Empty Trash. Express Card
I recently signed up with 3G for Broadband Mobile after being told that it is compatible with Apple laptops. My G3 PowerBook 400 (Firewire)( OS 10.4.10, 640mb ram) will power the Mobile Broadband Card and the Card flashes blue (apparently an indication that the card detects UMTS service), but the computer won't detect the card. Re: Lap-top screen size and shape
Mart, Thanks for the tip about shifting the tool bars in MS Word to the sides of the screen. I've decided to postpone any decisions about a replacement until late August, just in case new iMacs are released by then, and if they have been I'll think about putting the PowerBook out to pasture for use away from the office and slip a slinky new iMac onto the desk in the office. Are laptops like cars or other machines with seals - do they deteriorate if not used? Regards, Michael. On 20/6/07 2:37 PM, Martin Hill [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Michael, I find that wide-screen is so much better for working with documents than the old square 4:3 aspect ratio. I feel so cramped on the old style now. The reason is you can then far more easily have 2 documents side by side when comparing or copying and pasting etc. If you want as much vertical height as possible for a single document, one thing you can do in MS Word is to resize all of the toolbars to a vertical rather than horizontal orientation and drag them to the sides of your screen thus allowing your doc to use up the full vertical height of your screen. Because of the high resolution of the latest laptop screens, you get a higher number of pixels vertically than older laptops anyway. Even the little 13 MacBook has a vertical resolution of 800 which is higher than the 768 pixels of the old XGA (1024 x 768) screen on your G3 PowerBook. I have a 24 Dell LCD screen (currently on sale for $999) next to my MacBook Pro which has the option of rotating 90 degrees into portrait mode. You just choose the Rotate 90deg option in the monitors panel which works fine on my MacBook Pro. YMMV -Mart On 20/06/2007, at 6:39 AM, Michael Hawkins wrote: My G3 PowerBook 400 is over 7 years old. Accounting software
I'm in a one man business. My needs include time billing, BAS, PAYG, as well as share trading (dabble, but must still account to the ATO) and accounting for a self managed superannuation fund. MYOB doesn't do this. After reading Bob's suggested website at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/applications/topic4468.html I've sent an enquiry to MoneyWorks. Westnet speeds on 8MB plan
I recently changed from Westnet¹s 1.5MB plan to the 8MB/384 plan. Like others, I¹ve had slow line speeds and down load speeds (line speed varies between 1835 kbps and 2343 kbps, download varies between 229KB/s and 293 KB/s). I¹m less than 750 metres cable distance from the Wellington Street exchange. I¹m using a D-Link DSL-300 Generation II modem. Westnet support says that the modem doesn¹t provide information needed for Westnet to check line condition and attenuation. I¹ve experimented with manual settings using system preferences but automatic setting gives the fastest result. I¹ve seen a couple of postings that mention G.DMT protocol. Is that something I can setup on the modem that I have? The other thing I¹ve noticed since the upgrade took effect is that it now takes a lot longer to connect to Westnet. It¹s not uncommon to get a ³other side is not responding² message. Given that I hadn¹t had that problem before the change to the 8MB plan, even through the first few weeks of the school holidays and over the Christmas New Year break, could this be a sign that things need to be tweaked at the Westnet/iiNet end? Regards, Michael Hawkins.
DNS Timeout
My son has seen the light and bought a MacBook. His ISP is Amnet on a 8mbs service. Almost every time he attempts to retrieve a webpage he either gets a DNS timed out error message which comes up as soon as he hits the return key, or the connection stalls just after the progress colour bar has coloured in the http://www part of the url. If he hits the refresh button, the website is immediately displayed on his screen. He is using OS 10.4.7 (combo update), has repaired permissions, and has installed Safari Debugger. He has the problem on Safari and on Firefox. Any suggestions? Thanks, Michael Hawkins.

Now that I'm on OS 10.4.7 on a G3 PowerBook 400, I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a simple way of backing up to an external drive? Bounced emails
A number of people have recently told me that emails that they have tried to send to me have bounced. Needless to say I haven't received the emails. I'm using OS 10.4.7, Entourage 2004 for Mac v11.2.4, and Westnet's Spam Quarantine service. The bounced emails are listed in the digest of quarantined emails that Westnet sends me each day. All non-quarantined emails are downloaded and are not left on the server. I'm nowhere near my monthly account limit. Any suggestions about cause and cure? Thank you, Michael Hawkins.
Update: Bounced emails
Sorry folks, but I left a word out in my earlier email. The emails that have been bounced are NOT in the daily digest of quarantined emails that I get from Westnet. Michael Hawkins. Windows on Mac
According to a newsletter produced by Randy B. Singer (a lawyer in the USA) Note that Boot Camp isn't the perfect solution for users who want to run both Windows and OS X on their Macintosh. You can only boot (startup) into one operating system at a time; you can't run Windows in a separate window while you are running OS X, as you could with VirtualPC, and you can't cut and paste between the two environments. So, this is big news! But here is bigger news from a third-party developer. Parallels, announced soon after Boot Camp was announced, is a product that lets you run Windows XP in a window while you are running OS X, both running at full hardware speed at the same time! This product eclipses Boot Camp! Parallels allows your Intel-based Mac to run the entire Windows family (not just Windows XP). - 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP and 2003, even Linux, OS/2, and MS-DOS. The price is only $50. There is a downloadable 45-day trial version of Parallels available for free. Parallels http://www.parallels.com/en/news/id,8655 http://www.parallels.com/en/download/mac/ Note that both Parallels and Boot Camp are currently in the beta stage. So if you try one or both of them, be aware that they aren't necessarily of commercial quality yet. There are other products coming down the road that will allow you to run Windows software on your Macintosh. There is even the possibility that in the near future Macs will be able to run Windows applications without the need for Windows at all!

It gave me access to voice memos and items saved to my iPod as an external hard-drive that I thought I had deleted, but not to songs. They're both good, but iPod Util is a bit fiddly in that every track shows up and you have to uncheck the tracks that you don't want to copy across. Michael.
Macs, emulators, and Dragon Naturally Speaking
Has anyone had any success with getting Dragon Naturally speaking to run on an Apple? Or IBM's Via Voice? I'm envious of Windows users who have no difficulty at all in running voice recognition software, but am reluctant to switch platforms. Michael.
iPod woes since Tiger iTunes 4.8
Before Tiger, I used my iPod with Belkin Voice Recorder as a dictaphone and, after connecting the iPod to my PowerBook, could email my work as a sound attachment for my secretary to type. I can't get that to happen since installing Tiger and updating to iTunes 4.8 The select enable disc use option in the preferences is ticked, but greyed out. The voice memo doesn't appear if I click on the iPod icon on my desktop, but shows up as if it is a song in the source bar in iTunes. I suspect that Apple in its kindly, paternalistic way has done this to stop any transfer from iPods to computers and in its dictatorial mode has not warned anyone that this is what it has done. Does any-one have a work around? Michael.
Re iTunes 4.8
Since downloading iTunes 4.8 I can't use my iPod Belkin Voice Recorder to create a voice memo that I can save to my laptop and email as a sound attachment. This has only happened since updating to iTunes 4.8. I could do it with Tiger before iTunes 4.8, but can not do it now. Michael.
Tiger in a PowerBook*
Apple kept its promise to deliver by the 29th if Tiger was ordered before the 26th - it arrived in my office by express post late afternoon on Friday. I installed it by archive and install, after doing my usual Macjanitor and repair permissions and discwarrior 3.01 and back-up routine before installing. The installation was very straight forward. Yes, things were a bit slow when I first ran Tiger, but that was because Spotlight was indexing my hard drive. It's now running well. Interestingly, after Tiger was installed , discwarrior reported 12,567 aliases as wrongly recorded but everything has worked well, including using Entourage and printing to my Brother MFC-3820CN. As far as I'm concerned, Apple has kept the faith in that it runs on my G3 PowerBook 400, 640 ram. But Dashboard is wasted on me and I don't like the idea of having it running continuously. Can it be removed (as in deleted)? Michael Hawkins. * Some of you might be old enough to remember the oil company slogan Put a Tiger in your tank. I could never see or feel the difference, but I can with this Tiger.
Big Pond ADSL
It's 3 months since my 78 year old father-in-law signed up with Big Pond adsl. His connection is not up and running yet, but his dial-up subscription with another isp has been cancelled all that time. It's not like he lives in the sticks: he lives in Mt Pleasant. He's about to follow my advice which was to take note of the lack of service and ditch Big Pond. Michael.
Shoebox
Has anyone ordered prints from Shoebox? What was the quality like? I recently ordered some from FrogPrints. Delivery was prompt. The 6x4 and 10x12 versions were great, but the 5x7 versions of the same photos weren't so good (had mauve overtones). FrogPrint are redoing them on their own initiative. Regards, Michael Hawkins.
Photo printer recommendations
The Brother MFC that I have doesn't come up to scratch when I attempt to print colour photos (too slow and little control). Does anyone have any recommendations? So far I've looked at 6 7 cartridge Canon printers and an eight cartridge Epson. I'd like to be able to print documents at a quick rate, too. Michael Hawkins.
Re: MS Word Problems
Lloyd, Check to see if you have the autocorrect feature ticked. You'll find it under Tools in the menu bar. Yasu caused problems both times I used it, and so I abandoned it in favour of Macjanitor and Disk Utility..Good luck, Michael Hawkins. Subject: MS Word problems From: Lloyd White [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Suddenly I am having problems when I type in both MS Word (in MS Office X) and Entourage. As I type an alternative word comes up beneath the work I am typing. It seems to be giving me alternatives as I type. This has just started and to save my sanity I want to stop it. (SNIP) Thanks Lloyd

Re: warm (hot) laptops
I use an Australian made lapramp to sit my PowerBook on, whether it's on my lap or on my desk. It costs about $25 and is very well designed and convenient. It keeps the laptop off my lap and lets air circulate around the laptop, thus helping it run cooler. I use it on my desk, because it puts the keyboard on a slant and that makes it easier to use. Go to http://lapramp.com.au/home.htm to read more. Regards, Michael Hawkins.

For the last few days each time I go to a website (from bookmarks, or a link, or typed in manually) it does not connect and I get a message telling me the server cannot be found. But if I try a second time it connects. This is driving me crazy going to every web address twice to get in !! Any ideas would be appreciated ? PS: I have not changed any settings anywhere. Regards, Stephen Chape I have had the same problem since I downloaded updated Apple software last week, via Software Update. Just like Stephen, I have to go to web addresses twice before they will load. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was that I downloaded. A security update and QuickTime, I think. Or was it iTunes? I restarted and repaired permissions after installing the new software. I'm running OS 10.3.5 on a G3 PowerBook 400, Safari 1.2.3 (v125.9) Michael Hawkins.
DVD problem
Yesterday I burnt a DVD using Toast 6 and an external La Cie burner. I can play the DVD if I load it in the La Cie burner, but the computer does not recognise the DVD if I put it in the computer's internal DVD drive (ie, no icon appears on the desktop for the DVD). I'm using OS 10.3.5 and have not had the problem before. I was out of the room while the disc was being burnt, and the La Cie automatically ejected the disc. Any suggestions? Michael.
iPhoto 4
I have more than 800 photos on iPhoto 4 that I want to burn to a CD-Rom that can be read by a PC. The photos are in about 60 albums. I naively assumed that the photos would stay organised in those albums, when I burnt the CD. They haven't. I didn't give each photo a title ( I was relying on the albums, each of which was individually named). Each photo on the disc is identified by a jpg number, and that doesn't help at all for organisational purposes. Can anyone offer any help? I can't see any solution in OSX The Missing Manual or iPhoto 4 The Missing Manual. Exporting the albums to Canon Image Browser and burning the disc from there did not help, because all that was exported and burnt were aliases. Needless to say the photos don't appear when the aliases are clicked. I also tried making a disc image, and while that works well on my Mac it won't work on a PC, as the disc image opens in iPhoto. I'm running OS 10.3.5, Toast Titanium 6, and iPhoto 4. Thank you Michael Hawkins.
Update to DVD problem
I refer to my earlier post. The DVD that I burnt was a DVD+R disc. Could that be why it isn't recognised by my computer (OS 10.3.5)? Michael.
Re: iPhoto 4 CD Burn solved
I think that I have found the reason why I was not able to burn a CD from iPhoto, that preserved the album structure. I followed the advice given on pages 311 and 211 of iPhoto 4 The Missing Manual and used a plugin called BetterHTMLExport in an attempt to burn what are described on page 211 as pro Caliber Photo CDs. That method resulted in the loss of the use of the album structure. Rhonda found the answer for me. I'm embarrassed to say that the topic was covered in iPhoto's help section. Don't use the burn command on iPhoto. Instead select the photos and export them by File Export from the menu bar. Simple. Thanks Rhonda. Michael Hawkins.
Connecting PowerBook to Television or VCR
According to the manual that came with my G3 PowerBook 400, the laptop can be connected to a TV, VCR, or other video device. I want to play a DVD on my laptop and display it on the screen as well as on a TV. When I tried it yesterday, I kept getting an insufficient memory error message. DVD player was the only thing running. The computer has 640 mb ram and is running OS 10.3.5. In addition to trying in Panther I also tried to run DVD player in Classic, but it seems that the is not supported on a G3 PowerBook. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Or has Apple removed functionality. Thank you, Michael Hawkins.
